An Ali Review: A Matter of Duty (Hong Kong Nights #1) by J.C. Long

Noah Potter has come to Hong Kong to find his missing sister, Lianne, who disappeared after leaving him a voice mail pleading for his help. Unfortunately the Hong Kong police are unwilling to help him, so Noah has to find her himself.

Noah’s search for his sister brings him across Wei Tseng, leader of the Dragons, a group of dedicated men and women willing to do whatever it takes to keep their district safe from the violence and triads that plague the rest of the city’s underworld. Wei is a man of violence but also one of incredible compassion, and his history is one that resonates with Noah, igniting a passion neither man expects.

Together they search for Lianne, a search that will lead right into a conflict with the Dragons’ greatest rivals in the city.
I really enjoyed this fast paced and entertaining story.  I was hooked right from the prologue and the pace of the story didn’t slow down until the end.  I couldn’t read fast enough to see what was going to happen next.  I liked Noah right off the bat and I really felt for him as he struggles to find his sister in a country he’s never been too before.  And, Wei…..what a perfect anti-hero he was.
The mystery part of the story was really good but I especially loved the romance aspect of it.  The chemistry between the two men is immediate and it jumps off the pages at the reader.  I felt like the author did an excellent job of balancing the mystery and the action scenes with the romance and the relationship development. 
There are a host of side characters and they all added to the plot.  There is a subtle set up of the next book and the couple that will star in it.  The world building was also well done and it set the atmosphere of Hong Kong in a way that let me picture I was there.
This was a new author for me and I’m always really excited when I find a new author and/or a new series to read.  I’m going to have to go back and read his back catalogue.
I had no complaints about this book and really can’t fan girl it enough.  It was really well done and it is a definite recommend from me.
Cover:  I like the cover a lot.  It is eye catching and fits the plot perfectly.

An Ali Review: Soothsayer by Cari Z.

I’ve read most everything this author has written and I’m a big fan of hers.  That being said, I think this is my favorite book that she’s written.  I was immediately drawn into this story and once I started it, I could not put it down.  It’s a fairly short book but a lot happens.  The blurb perfectly explains the plot.  Cillian is living with his mother’s best friend and trying to keep a low profile.  He’s been kidnapped in the past by people who want him to do bad things for them with his power.  While he’s currently doing alright, Cillian lives with a horrible regret from his past that he can’t seem to let go.  When the chance to right the wrongs he’s done comes up, Cillian jumps at the chance to make amends despite the danger to himself.  This leads Cillian, Soren and an Icelandic land spirit that acts like a teenager, to head out across the United States on a crazy road trip.  A road trip that includes bar fights, mobsters, roller coasters, paint ball fights, hand held missiles, cowboys, more ancient spirits, waffles and blowing stuff up.  

The plot is fast paced and super entertaining.  This is the kind of story that would make a great movie.  In addition to the fun plot, there are also a lot of emotions.  The author was able to weave a complex emotional story between Cillian and Soren and it was a relationship I totally bought in to.  I was rooting for these two the entire way.  I loved Cillian as the main character but I think the author did a great job on all of the side characters too.  There a lot of them but they are all fleshed out well and they are all unique and add purpose to the overall plot.  The spirit was just as important as Soren and actually had more on page time.  He stole every scene he was in with his petulant demands.  He made me laugh out loud more than once.

 I think this book has something for everyone and will appeal to a lot of readers.  It’s unique, romantic, funny and filled with great characters.  This is one I would definitely recommend.

I loved this story just as much as I have with all of the others in this series.  Chuck and Jordan have been dancing around each other for the last couple books, so it was great to see them finally get their own story.  It’s great to see Chuck’s trust building in Jordan when he has to deal with his combative family dynamic.

 

We got a quick look at Josh and David working to fix their relationship problems from the previous book, but leaves a little mystery for the future with the possibility of an additional owner for the club that gives the opportunity for more characters to come into play in future books.  The rest of the book was on Chuck and Jordan’s budding relationship.  Once they got going they moved pretty fast, but they had a lot of build up that had been in the background in the previous books, so they weren’t just jumping in.

 

They mystery of Corey’s previous dom continues throughout this book and brings in some new twists that may play a bigger role in later books.  I look forward to reading more in this series while they solve the mystery, but also to see more of all the wonderful characters in this series.

 

The cover art is great and follows the pattern for the series.

An Ali Review: Cops and Robby by Carol Lynne

Cole found Robby in an alley in pain on his way home one night.  Morgan is wary of the stranger and doesn’t want anyone to come between him and Cole.  As they give Robby time to heal they learn some new things about each other.

 

Cole and Morgan already have a taboo relationship, but it is based on their deep love for each other.  They don’t hide their relationship from Robby and welcome him to their lives.

 

My heart broke for Robby with how bad his life has been so far and how he believes that Cole and Morgan are just too good to be true.  Cole loves having someone to take care of, while Morgan has someone else to protect.  This was a shorter story that held a lot of emotions, it was wonderful to see the three of them get their HEA.

 

The cover art is nice, but needs to be zoomed in a bit to see the details.
