An Alisa Release Day Review: Why I Love Geeks by T.A. Chase

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

why-i-love-geeks-by-ta-chaseNew York City Homicide Detective Chuck Davidson is a guy’s guy. He likes sports, beer, and classic cars—fancy gadgets, not so much. When yet another high-tech phone goes on the fritz, he knows he needs help, and he meets a man who loves technology as much as he hates it—cute but awkward biochemist Herbert Pommerset.

Herb’s never been with a man—not even on a date. He hides behind his research, daydreaming about what it might be like to find someone special. A malfunctioning phone causes his path to cross with a sexy older detective, and Herb wishes he’d spent less time studying science and more learning how to flirt, because he can think of some experiments he’d like to conduct with Chuck. None of his considerable intelligence is helping him express his desires to the other man.

Just when it seems they might overcome their differences, Herb’s research puts him in danger. He’s made a discovery that could cost him his life, and Chuck must use his very different talents to rescue the geek he’s coming to love.

This was a wonderfully sweet story.  Herb and Chuck are both adorable in their own ways.  Herb has never has a date and has a severe case of verbal diarrhea, that can be a bit intrusive and absolutely hilarious.  Chuck is a bit jaded by his life as a homicide detective, but has never had someone who wanted to stay around once they found out how much his job can take him away.

They are both attracted to each other when they initially meet; however they don’t exchange names in their short interaction, but it takes some interference and planning from Chuck’s sister, Jesse, who happens to work with Chuck.  A nice coincidence, don’t you think.  When she gets them face to face again it is impossible to deny their chemistry.  When Chuck’s job brings him to the lab that Herb and Jesse work at he is willing to pull out all the stops to protect them.

Herb is so adorably sweet and continues to just hope that Chuck may want him for more than one night.  He needs a bit of grounding and reassurance, but is willing to jump head first into his first (and hopefully only) relationship.  Chuck has a bit of trouble understanding his immediate feelings for Herb, but doesn’t let that stand in the way of making it work.  They are both so different, but still a bit broken and lonely on the inside that they connect perfectly, maybe a little too perfect at times, but that is okay with me.

Cover art by Anne Cain is wonderful and gives us a great visuals of the characters..

An Alisa Review: The Cowboy in Unit E (The Mockingbird Place #2) by Kris Cook

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

the-cowboy-in-unit-eThe good news is the most gorgeous cowboy I’ve ever seen is moving in next door to me. The bad news? He’s not alone. Hanging on his arm is a very pregnant woman. Are they a couple? It sure looks like they are. So not only is he not gay, but he also has a girlfriend, or a wife, or whatever. Just my luck.

****

21-year old Trace Cotton is an artist who never shows his paintings to anyone. When cowboy Luke Wagner moves into Mockingbird Place with a very pregnant Ava, Trace believes he must fight his attraction to Luke since he’s taken.

When Ava collapses outside Trace’s apartment, he comes to her rescue. Things aren’t what they seem on the surface, but when Trace finds out the truth will it be too late for a chance at something real with Luke?

I enjoyed this story.  Trace has spent years trying to heal from some abuse he suffered as a child, only his paintings have helped his pain.  Luke has put his life on hold and suffered in silence since his brother’s death, once he realizes he can still live his life he may have damaged his bridges too much

Both of these characters were wonderful, they are both broken but can see that things will get better.  I could see both of their emotions and how they were able to deal with their pasts and help healing each other.  Their love is strong enough to heal the other and to form a family with the others at Mockingbird Place.  Seeing the unwavering love all the characters have for each other was wonderful.

The cover art is nice and follows the pattern for the series.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Bear Among the Books by TJ Masters

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Bear Among the Books by TJ MastersForty-eight-year-old Ben Thompson is a librarian, a passionate book lover, and a man who embodies the definition of a bear. He’s also lonely after the loss of his long-term partner. Young ex-gymnast Jason Barnes piques his interest, but Ben quickly realizes there’s more to Jason than his good looks. While Jason visits the library almost every day, he never checks out a book.

With gentle persistence, Ben befriends Jason and learns the nineteen-year-old’s tragic secrets. After years of abuse at his father’s hands, Jason was kicked out of his family home for being gay. And despite his apparent love of books, Jason never learned to read. Ben offers to teach him, and the two men bond over their lessons. Ben can’t deny his attraction to Jason, but he wonders if Jason is too young and too handsome to return his interest. With the help of the close-knit library team and Jason’s growing self-confidence, they move beyond the books and into the bedroom, where their own story is just beginning.

This was a very enjoyable story.  Ben has been alone since his partner passed away putting all he has into the library he manages, making his own family out of the other employees.  He is drawn to Jason when he first sees him and befriends the young man hoping to draw him out of his shell.

Ben is almost thirty years older than Jason and despite his feelings tries to keep their relationship as friends only until his friends and Jason’s grandmother convince him that all that matters is how they feel about each other.  Jason has been through so much he deserves to have happiness in his life.  Both characters have to open up to the possibility of more than what they currently have in their lives.

This story is told from Ben’s point of view, so we can easily see his emotions and thoughts.  It takes a bit to understand some of Jason’s feelings, but he is very open with how he feels.  I was so happy for Jason being able to gain friends through the library employees and the love he deserves from Ben.  Even though Jason is much younger than Ben he is more mature than his age in many ways, but you can still see his youth come through during the story.  I was very happy with how this story ended and am glad they got their happy ending.

Cover art by Alexandria Corza is perfect and I wouldn’t change a thing.
