Review: Mack’s Horribly Hellacious Ghost Town (Mack’s Marvelous Manifestations #5 by AJ Sherwood

Rating: 4🌈

Mack’s Horribly Hellacious Ghost Town  is the finale story in the Mack’s Marvelous Manifestations paranormal series by A. J. Sherwood and it’s a really good read.

I’m sorry to see this series and set of characters go, especially since Sherwood actually introduces some new and engaging characters here in the finale novel. Maybe, as the author writes in the notes, they might speak to her sometime in the future.

Brandon and Mack , new apprentice Gwyn who’s part of the story, and all the Paranormal Activity Division, FBI friends they’ve worked, all engage in two big spooky battles in Black Rock, Arizona, a mining ghost town.

“a coal mining town in Arizona—or a former coal mining town, I should say—that’s haunted as hell.”*

I’ll come back to this.

Lachlan and Seiji, chaos magician and fabulous new character as well as new romantic/paranormal partner for Lochlan, were a wonderful surprise couple. They got a small amount of narrative time and  a chapter’s perspective here. Honestly they were both a lovely team and a frustrating element of the story because they were great together and then it ends. So why do it at all?

Mack and Brandon are ready to get married and settle down, a running thread here. This is the case just before they get married and are into their next adventure.

The town in Arizona, Black Rock, which is an actual copper mining town, here is a ghost town full of ghosts and things that go bump into the night. Tons of them. And the Mayor has asked for help.

There’s also a haunted coal mine outside of town with something down deep in the deserted mine shafts to deal with as well.  That’s the second issue.  The town’s ghosts and the thing in the mine.

Added to that is a young girl, a medium, Gywn, who needs saving from her family and the dark ghosts attacking her.

So there’s a lot of storytelling and elements that the narrative needs to handle. Which it does by bringing back multiple characters from books to help Mack and Brandon deal with the situation. And Gywn’s, who turns out to be a great delight here. She needs to be factored into Lachlan and Seiji stories.

The actual battles seemed to be more Seiji’s than anyone else’s, fierce as they were, with Lachlan and Dor’s fighting too.

Mack and Brandon took care of the rest of the ghosts, surprisingly easy as this is their story.

The locations of the mines and areas of interest, Clifton, an actual great historical copper mining town in Arizona , about 3.5 hours east of Phoenix. Check it out! The real historical coal mining sites were northeastern parts of the state in Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation lands, like the Kayenta Mine.

There’s more than one Black Mesa too.  That’s directly east of Phoenix.

So in the story and town it’s a bit different than what you might expect to see historically correct sites.

But it’s a finale book, they’re headed off to get married, which they quickly do in the epilogue. Short and sweet.

I was disappointed not to see the characters who were in the story not to be mentioned in the wedding section but it’s so hurried that hardly anyone is.

This book starts out great but is rushed towards the end. Still a wonderful series.

Apprentices, and two ghost towns, and almost-demons oh…no.

Mack doesn’t mind the apprentice part of this job; in fact, finding Gwyn is delightful, though he hates she grew up in such a haunted town with parents who don’t believe she’s a Medium.

Mack really hates the old mining ghost town is locked down with weird energy and none of the ghosts can see them, which makes passing them difficult.

Mack especially hates that in Black Rock there’s an almost-demon ghost inciting other ghosts to cause a mob, how is that allowed to be a thing?!

Who you gonna call for help when you’re the experts? Mack wants to know for a friend. (Him. He’s the friend.)

Review: Fated Mates and How to Seduce Them ( Fated Mates 4 )by AJ Sherwood

Rating: 4.5🌈

I’ve really enjoyed this series and this might be my favorite one of them all. Watching Ian and vampire Andre navigate through their lives and journey to mates and HEA was funny, sweet and often moving.

I honestly could have used more scenes of them together shopping for the kids of the home, or Andre using his favorite animated tv shows to teach French.  Or just the family dynamics when Ian got added, it was heartwarming and wonderful.

Unlike some of the other books, this is angst free, even while it does mention some of the worst events with the VSB that happened prior.

Sherwood’s characters and abilities to craft a story and romance the reader can relate to are excellent and represented by the couple here.

Another winner and one I’m recommending.

After Ian Moore steps in to save resident playboy and vampire André Castor from a spiked drink, he expects life to go back to normal. Why, he doesn’t know, but that assumption seems reasonable, right?

Only André doesn’t want it to go back to normal. He’s found a cute, trustworthy human, which is an anomaly in his world. Can’t he just keep Ian?

Ian knows how this game ends, patiently waiting for the playboy to move on…so why is André proving him wrong?

Review:  Starfire (Legends of Lobe den Herren Book 3) by AJ Sherwood

Rating: 4.5 🌈

I adore this series and group of characters so seeing it continue with Luca O’ Broín and architect Noe Keller is amazing.

The story flows beautifully as the men go through the process of friendship to lovers, working together on the structure of the castle and with their crews. It’s a natural progression and the reader feels folded seamlessly into their journey and the love that they share.

Sherwood doesn’t forget the dramatic moments, which comes from both sides of each man’s family.  But Starfire satisfactorily deals with each struggle and ends with a sense of accomplishment and success. Of a love and happiness for their future.

If this is the last book, I’m extremely happy for how they are going out.

A definite winner and highly recommended.

Review:  Adopt a Vampire (a Ross Young & Unholy Trifecta Crossover ) by AJ Sherwood

Rating: 4.5🌈

What an excellent read! I’m always happy when Sherwood returns to some of my favorite universes and characters. So when I see a crossover story, I’m thrilled.

Adopt a Vampire (a Ross Young & Unholy Trifecta Crossover ) by AJ Sherwood is an entertaining and highly recommended read, especially if you’re a fan of both series like me.

Vampire Jessie Hunt is clueless about vampire life, just trying to get by not hunting or hurting anyone. It’s not going well for him. Until he runs into the local pack of werewolves who decides he’s in need of some serious care and support.

And it’s Alpha Barrett Walker sees in Jesse something more.

This is a delightful, sweet and funny crossover romance. Full of great new characters and old faces stopping in as support and laughter.

I absolutely love this , and if you’re a fan of these series and the author, you will too.

A definite winner.

Review:  My Inherited House Might be Haunted by AJ Sherwood

Rating:  3.5🌈

My Inherited House Might be Haunted by AJ Sherwood is a cute, no angst paranormal romance.  It originally came about as a serialized story on the author’s Patreon site but has been updated and expanded.

The characters are adorable, there’s a inherited haunted house, along with ghosts (a family of ghosts which we never meet unfortunately), brownies, witches everywhere!

There’s so many interesting elements here pack together for a short story. Especially the familiars , a cat and puppy, that these characters never get fully developed into their elements. They are familiars in name only because they’re recognized by others as such. But do they talk or do things that we think of as being something familiars do? No. They do things that our cats and dogs do just as adorably mostly.

The romantic relationship is fast and the book length just doesn’t leave them much time for development of magical skills, new knowledge of how magic works, or other relationship areas.  But the characters, Rhett and Calix and Calix’s family are so interesting that this story makes me wish for a sequel or expanded version.

Read My Inherited House Might be Haunted by AJ Sherwood for a delightful instant love paranormal tale!

Review:  Fated Mates and When to Keep Them by AJ Sherwood

Rating: 4🌈

Fated Mates and When to Keep Them by AJ Sherwood is both the third book in the series and the first one that should be read.  It’s a topsy-turvey world in this series in which Sherwood wrote the series in backwards order.

It’s a blame the characters who shuffled for the loudest voices writing moment.

I read them backwards, of course, and absolutely enjoyed Fated Mates and When to Keep Them, where I got the vampire origin story, at least from Fernando’s family’s perspective centuries ago.  We also get the adorable romance between Fernando and Noel, a couple we’ve seen only as an established mate powerful duo in the other books.

I really enjoyed reading their journey. If a mafia boss and an orphan can have a violence filled relationship, that’s equally filled with smooching, cookies , music, and flying bodies, this was it! A highly entertaining romantic adventure!

I’d love to see a continuation of this, with some of the other, equally interesting and exciting characters get their own romances.

A definite rec!

Noel is desperate for cash. So PA for the mafia boss it is, or he risks losing his childhood home. Too bad the job also comes with a grumpy vampire boss.

Family has been Fernando’s priority for centuries, so why does his adorable PA suddenly stir long-forgotten feelings?

Killing anyone that endangers Noel counts as a romantic gesture, right? Asking for a vampire.

Review: A Fae Coin Transported Me Into Another World and Now I’m the Gay Holy Maiden: Fortune Favors the Fae Book 1 by A. J. Sherwood

Rating: 5🌈

Well, this was an absolute blast! A beautifully crafted, well written, and wildly entertaining fantasy story that I really didn’t want to see end.

A. J. Sherwood, a author I’m an enormous fan of, just has a fabulous time with the theme of this multi author collection and gives us a tale of a man ripped out of his own life and into a new world! It’s one complete with talking magical fae coin, peopled with many species in need of some dire, or in this case divine intervention, a handsome intelligent warrior/Duke, and a quest the displaced businessman is surprisingly well suited to solve.

There’s so many great layers to this world and Sherwood’s story. The characters alone are ones I could write pages about, not just the main characters but all the well defined but important ones. Like the child Izzy, Grandma the Herb Master, Mina and her grandfather, Grandpa Hawes, a farmer, Boss Melva, and so many others. Each voice distinct and memorable. Their personalities and presence made this book and world real and vibrant with emotion.

However it’s Jake Alexander, soon to be divorced from a disastrous marriage, who’s hit by a truck and transported by a mischievous fae coin to another realm where a quest and new life awaits him. Jake is someone who, no matter what his family or his beleaguered life has delivered, has always been able to make the best of what he has been dealt. That attitude, and with his own personality and integrity makes Jake a character we cheer on, especially as we learn more about his past life and upbringing.

The person who is supporting Jake, in his new role as the gay Holy Maiden (that’s a hilarious aspect I’ll leave to the story), is Theon, a warrior who, in his own right, is the only person who has treated Jake the way that he has been hoping for. Theon who’s responsible, intelligent and warmhearted. Worried about the welfare of his people yet still has the same caring attitude towards Jake. It’s a marvelous relationship to watch evolve. Humorous, warm hearted and , slow to kick in. Loved it

There’s several terrific surprises. Every person, every being is treated with respect and kindness. Here you’ll find yourself and the world you are meant to live in.

So yes, I wasn’t finished with this crew or world when the end hit. I could have kept going. I so hope that there’s a sequel somewhere someday. Fingers crossed

Highly recommend!

Blurb

What happens when you fall and hit the webtoons trope tree? You get killed by Truck-kun, get transported to a fantasy world by a sentient Fae coin, and become the first gay holy maiden.

Jake Alexander is Not Happy to be sure. Fortunately in Jake’s case, part of the trope tree includes the gorgeous Duke of the North, Theon. And starting a business from scratch, which he’s always wanted to do. And revitalizing his new country which is on the verge of collapse.

He could do without the killer miasma and corrupted kings and the singing magic and a sentient coin that doesn’t shut up, however.

Jake’s not sure if he should thank or melt the Fae coin into *ahem* something more useful.

And that madcap murderous fabulous family of sorcerers and a King will adopt another into the fold.

Will we see Tan, Devan, the kids, and the rest of the ever enlarging family? Sherwood doesn’t know. But I hope so. They have caught our attention and our hearts. That life and vivacity surely won’t be denied. Stay tuned!

This means our family of sorcerers , young budding sorcerers included, have a blast, we find out what a Piemu is, and Steve is that much closer to being a whole skeleton.

I sort of missed him here. And the skelebabies in action. They are so adorable and great fun.
