Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Andrew Grey here today to share his thoughts on  writing and his latest novel, Nobel Intentions.  Welcome, Andrew.
~
I really love a good story.  When I first started writing, my goal was to be a storyteller.  Growing up my dad didn’t read us stories, he told us ones he made up and I think I got some of my skills from him.  I feel its important not to write a book, but to tell the story and I have the best job because I get to tell stories about people falling in love.  What job could be better than that?  Sometimes I write stories about farmers and other times about movie stars and old loves.  I love it all.  I recently finished a story called Setting the Hook about a charter boat captain on the Gulf of Mexico.  I got to go to many different places with my stories and with Noble Intentions I was able to travel to England and visit one of its great country estates.  In books we got to go places we might never get a chance to visit otherwise.  As an author I like to think we get to make an extended stay.  Happy holidays and I hope you enjoy your visit to the country estate where I got to stay for a while.

Blurb/Synopsis:

Robert Ashton is in for the surprise of a lifetime. His mother, a bit of a rebel, raised him away from the rest of the family, and it’s not until he’s contacted by his lawyer about an inheritance that he learns who he truly is: the new Earl of Hantford. His legacy includes ownership of the historic Ashton Park Estate—which needs repairs Robert cannot afford. He’ll simply do what the nobility has done for centuries when in need of money. He’ll marry it.

Tech wizard Daniel Fabian is wealthy and successful. In fact, he has almost everything—except a title to make him worthy in the eyes of the old-money snobs he went to prep school with. His high school reunion is looming, and he’s determined to attend it as a member of the aristocracy.

That’s where Robert comes in.

Daniel has the money, Robert has the name, and both of them know they can help each other out. But their marriage of convenience has the potential to become a real love match—unless a threat to Daniel’s business ruins everything.

Excerpt

“It’s your fifteenth class reunion and you’re a real success. Of course you’re going to go.”

Daniel shook his head. “I have no interest.”

She came in and sat in one of the chairs. Daniel had built all of his business teams on the philosophy of openness and communication. So while he had an office because he dealt with private matters, his door was almost always open and his walls were glass. He had nothing to hide from the people on his team, and he expected the same from them. That also meant people tended to offer advice and speak their mind—sometimes whether Daniel wanted it or not.

“I didn’t know you went to Lipton. That must have been exciting.” She looked at him strangely. “I always thought your background was more… humble than that.”

Daniel closed the lid on his laptop. “It is.” He didn’t want to get into that right now. There were some things he felt were private, and Joanne was skating very close to them at the moment. “I was on a scholarship.”

She watched him closely for a minute. “I see.”

Sometimes she scared the hell out of him with the way she could grasp the deeper meaning from just a few words. He should have said nothing at all.

“What does that look mean?”

“Nothing. Just that no matter what happened then, you’re extremely successful and you can hold your own with those people.”

Daniel leaned forward. “Those people…,” he began, and swore at himself for taking the bait, “they only cared about where their parents came from. They were all old money, as though that made them better than everyone else. It wasn’t about what you did or how well you did, but how far back you could trace the money in your family. There was a Vanderbilt relative in my class, for God’s sake. And the parents were just as shallow as their children. Yes, I got a good education that gave me a good start into college and beyond, but it was hell, and the last thing I want to do is—”

Joanne scoffed. “There is only one thing that gets you pissy like this, and that’s when you say you don’t want to do something but you really do. You’d love nothing more than to go to that reunion, sitting at the top of the heap in every way possible. You want to go to this shindig real bad and show them just the kind of success you’ve become.”

“Yeah.” He rolled his eyes. “These guys are not going to be impressed or care that I have a big Internet company. They have more money than you can imagine.”

“Like I was going to say. You’re a success, but you have to go with someone.”

“God, I haven’t had the time to date anyone in, what? Three years?”

“Three years, two months, and twelve days, but who’s counting? The thing is, you need to find someone so you can go to this reunion and hold your head high. Hell, you can take the place by storm.” Joanne came around his desk, opened the lid of his computer, and brought up a web page. “This is exactly what you need.”

“A matchmaker?” Daniel figured he’d finally sent Joanne around the bend. Maybe she needed a vacation.

“Why not? This is a discreet, expensive agency with high-class clientele. Lots of guys like you spend all their time working and building their dream, and they forget about a personal life and have no time to date. So the old-fashioned matchmaker has a modern application. I’ll call them and make an appointment for you. They’ll talk to you and get the ball rolling.” She worked through the website. “They don’t discriminate and work with men and women, gay or straight. They even have aristocrats.” She turned the computer so Daniel could see the screen. “Here’s Count Gregor of Villovia and his new wife, Diana. Think about it. A title would certainly burn their asses at the reunion.”

Daniel groaned. “I suppose you aren’t going to leave me alone until I agree to do this.” He could just see the puppy-dog looks he’d get until he complied—like the one she was giving him now. “Sometimes I really hate you.”

A Jeri Release Day Review: Noble Intentions by Andrew Grey

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5
noble-intentionsOne thing you can count on with an Andrew Grey book is a good romance. He didn’t disappoint.
Robert is a barrister in England working for the person who didn’t always have a voice. The old man getting evicted, the small shop owner being sued, etc. Raised by his mother, they are very close and see each other often. But then his world is turned upside down when he finds out an uncle he didn’t know about died and being the next male heir, he inherits not only the estate but the title of Earl of Hanford. And the enormous debt left behind.
On a trip to America for business, he signs up with a match maker and is quickly set up on a date with Daniel. A super rich business man who came from nothing and made himself into everything. But no matter how much money he has, he still feels like that kid who went to prep school on scholarship because his mother didn’t have the money. The rich kids at school didn’t let him forget it either.
Robert and Daniel expect very little of their last minute date, but find themselves drawn together. Their chemistry is undeniable. So once they really start talking, they find that they can help each other out. Daniel has the money to help Andrew and Andrew has the title that would make Daniel really feel as if he has made it in life, A business agreement if you will. Until real feelings get involved.
So as they work together to bring the estate back to life, they find themselves falling in love.
I found this to be a sweet, romantic story. I enjoyed hearing about the history involved and how Daniel so quickly thought of different things to bring money in to the estate so that Robert didn’t have to let it go and sell it. I expected Daniel to be the prickly one of the relationship, but really it was Robert. Daniel did everything he could for Robert, out of love and well being but Robert was just seeing it as Daniel trying to simply get a title.
Allowing themselves to love and be loved. Figuring out that they were far better together than separate. A lovely, sweet, romantic story.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Andrew Grey here today to talk about writing, inspiration and his latest novel, The Playmaker.  Welcome, Andrew.

Sometimes its hard to know exactly where a story comes from.  For me ideas spark from so many places.  But this story came to me as I was watching a football game at a friends house and one of the color announcers was talking about how one a particular player had a reputation for disorganization off the field.  After that I didn’t pay attention to the game any longer because I was already thinking about Monty and Hunter.  Sometimes ideas come to me that quickly and other times they develop slowly.  When they spring forth as rapidly as The Playmaker did all I can do is write them down as quickly as I can so I can capture all the rich idea goodness.  Ideas for stories have a shelf life.  If you don’t do something with them they fade away.  For me ideas come and go, but the one that started The Playmaker, I held on tight to.  I really hope you enjoy the fruit of that idea.

Blurb

Professional football player Hunter Davis is learning that saying he’s gay is very different from actively being in a relationship with another man—especially in the eyes of his teammates and fans. So when Hunter needs a personal assistant to keep him organized, he asks for a woman to prevent tongues from wagging.

Montgomery Willis badly needs to find work before he loses everything. There’s just one position at the agency where he applies, but the problem is, he’s not a woman. And he knows nothing about football. Still, Hunter gives him a chance, but only because Monty’s desperate.

Monty soon proves his worth by saving Hunter’s bacon on an important promotional shoot, and Hunter realizes he might have someone special working for him—in more ways than one. Monty’s feelings come to the surface during an outing in the park when Hunter decides to teach Monty a bit about the game, and pictures surface of them in some questionable positions. Hunter is reminded that knowing he’s gay and seeing evidence in the papers is very different for the other players, and he might have to choose between two loves: football and Monty.

Excerpt

You need to go now, Monty said from the doorway. And when you get the chance, we should go over some of this paperwork in the office. A lot of it appears to be garbage and junk mail that I shredded, but there is other stuff I wanted to check with you about before I destroy it.

Okay. Put the things to go through aside.

Is there anything else you need before you go? The doorbell rang, and Monty hurried to the front door. Oh thank goodness, Monty practically squealed, and Hunter wondered what was going on. He followed and saw Monty cradling two boxes in his arms. Youre a lifesaver. Monty closed the door and practically ran into him.

Whats all this? And why are you receiving deliveries here? he demanded, his hands on his hips.

Monty looked like hed been slapped. Its some things Helen sent over for me. He stepped back and seemed to shrink. She said Id need a laptop and a phone. He set the boxes down, opened one box and pulled out a brand new iPhone and then an iBook computer from the other, still in their packaging.

Oh. Hunter stalked away, feeling like an ass, but he wasnt going to let Monty see that. He grabbed his jacket and felt Monty looking him over. What? He glanced down at himself.

Can we see if you have a shirt at least that doesnt look like something worn by Richie Cunningham? Hunter wasnt sure what was so terrible about a plaid button-up and khakis.

I have to go. He slipped on his jacket.

You have five minutes. I was pushing you to be early.

Hunter huffedhed been doing that a lot latelyclimbed the stairs, and took off his jacket as he stalked down the hallway. He went to his room with Monty right behind him and opened the closet.

Monty peered inside and turned back to him, looking aghast. My God. He moved hangers aside and continued until he reached the very end of the closet. Thank God. There is something decent in here. Monty pulled out a shirt that Hunter couldnt remember having, and handed it to him. Put this on. I bet it will look nice on you. There isnt anything I can do with the pants, but at least.

Hunter unbuttoned his shirt, and Monty went silent. Hunter took the new one off the hanger and shrugged it on. When he turned back to Monty, he glanced away quickly. How does it feel?

Soft. Hunter buttoned it up and then started to tuck it in.

No. Leave it out. It will look better, and the silk is way more appealing than those pants. Monty smoothed out the shirt and rolled up the cuffs, then stepped back and smiled. Now you look like a million bucks. Monty tossed him the jacket. Go get em.

Youre coming with me, Hunter said, and Monty squeaked and hurried out of the room and down the stairs. When Hunter caught up with him, he was pulling the phone out of its case and shoving it into his bag.

A Jeri Release Day Review: The Playmaker by Andrew Grey

Rating: 4 Stars out of 5

the-playmaker-by-andrew-greyWhen you are out and proud, but forced to live a celibate life, are you really out?

Hunter is a professional football player on the rise. While most of the world and the other players accept that he is gay, they don’t want to hear about it. Being gay is ok, being in a relationship apparently is not. During the off season his manager convinces him to hire a personal assistant to not only get his life together, but to get him where he needs to be. On time. Which is a problem for Hunter

Montgomery is desperate. Living on his sister’s couch, he needs a job so he can get out of her hair. Opportunity falls in his lap when he convinces the employment agency to give him a chance as a personal assistant.

Hunter is shocked to see Monty- a guy- at his door. Monty isn’t shocked at all, because he knows nothing about football and doesn’t realize he should be fan boying over Hunter.

Of course, sparks lead to more which lead to more. But not everyone is happy to see Hunter with another man.

I’ve only recently discovered Andrew Grey and I have yet to be disappointed. I am happy to say that most of his books make me cry and this one didn’t. While there was some tension and a falling out, it wasn’t the heart breaker it normally is. That isn’t a bad thing.

I really enjoyed seeing two men who were already out. No one was struggling with the sexuality. And honestly, it seemed like this would happen in the real world. People being totally fine with a sports star being gay, but freaking out when he is acting on it.

Monty was adorable. He probably wouldn’t like that term. But he swept in and turned Hunter’s life around. Without giving a flip that he was some big shot. They developed a sweet genuine relationship and were perfect together.

There were some great side characters; Monty’s sister and her girlfriend as well as Hunter’s teammates. Their interactions made the story more real and not just couple centric.

Another must read from Andrew Grey.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is perfect.  It captures both characters while being bright and eye-catching.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Turning the Page by Andrew Grey

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Turning the PageMalcolm Webber is still grieving the loss of his partner of twenty years to cancer. He’s buried his mind and feelings in his legal work and isn’t looking for another relationship. He isn’t expecting to feel such a strong attraction when he meets Hans Erickson—especially since the man is quite a bit younger than him.

Hans is an adventure writer with an exciting lifestyle to match. When he needs a tax attorney to straighten out an error with the IRS, he ends up on the other side of the handsome Malcolm’s desk. The heat between them is undeniable, but business has to come first. When it’s concluded, Hans leaps on the chance to make his move.

Malcolm isn’t sure he’s ready for the next chapter in his life. Hans is so young and active that Malcolm worries he won’t be able to hold his interest for long. Just when he’s convinced himself to take the risk and turn the page, problems at the law office threaten to end their love story before it can really begin.

This story from Andrew Grey was outstanding, IMHO, and not just because I found Malcolm to be kind-hearted, yet sharp-witted, and dedicated to both his profession and the memory of his lost love. I felt a warm empathy for his character right from the beginning. Andrew Grey created a sweetheart wrapped in a smart lawyer’s skin, a man who loved deeply and grieves just as much. I also loved the fact that he’s in his fifties, and he’s still a healthy adult male with a good libido!

Hans is also a very engaging character. Smart and adventurous, he falls head-over-heels for Malcolm and persistently works to chip away at the wall Malcolm has erected around himself—one block at a time. As a supporting character, Malcolm’s brother was well-fleshed out. He’s the one who gets Malcolm to make the call to Hans after they meet while out to dinner, and he’s supportive and positive toward them throughout the book.

Malcolm and Paul have both romantic and adventurous dates, and they have very scary experiences—both separately and together—which add excitement and intrigue to the story. I think even the sex scenes are more hot? Descriptive? Evocative? Not sure which word best describes them but they were certainly present and certainly not just a quick kiss in the dark. Another cheer for Mr. Grey for showing that men over age forty have sex—and enjoy it!

So, I definitely recommend this one to all lovers of MM romance, especially those who love a hurt-comfort story, men over forty, or healing from grief. This one has it all, and it’s very well done.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is beautiful and perfect for the story.

A Stella Review: Chasing the Dream by Andrew Grey

Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Chasing the DreamBorn with a silver spoon in his mouth, Brian Paulson has lived a life of luxury and ease. If he’s been left lonely because of his family’s pursuit of wealth and their own happiness, he figures it’s a small price to pay for what he sees as most important: money.

Cade McAllister has never had it easy. He works two jobs to support himself, his mother, and his special-needs brother. They don’t have much, but to Cade, love and taking care of the people who are important to him mean more than material possessions. When Cade is mugged in the park, he can’t afford to lose what little he has, and he’s grateful for Brian’s intervention.

Cade is given a chance to return the favor when Brian’s grandfather passes away and Brian’s assets are frozen. Cade offers Brian a place to stay and helps him find work, and the two men grow closer as they learn the good and the bad of the very different worlds they come from. Just as Brian is starting to see there’s more to life than what money can buy, a clause in his grandfather’s will could send their relationship up in smoke.

I realized it was some time since I’ve read an Andrew Grey book, surprisingly, because he was one of the first mm author I devoured when my obsession with the mm romance began. That’s why I was enthusiastic to read Chasing the Dream, I liked his stories in the past and I was happy to discover I still enjoy what Andrew writes.

Chasing the Dream is the story of two people who couldn’t be more different: Brian, a very rich young man who had never worked in his life, spends the days partying and drinking. With an almost non existent family, no one really worries about him. Cade has not enough time in his days for the various jobs he does to support himself and help his mother to care and plan a future for his brother with special needs. An act of generosity brings the two men together and their lives will change forever.

Two big hearts collide and what I got was a lovely story. I soon connected with Cade from the start, he’s an amazing guy, supportive and welcoming toward  Brian, basically a stranger, but someone who desperately needs help and Cade is there to teach him what real friends and family do for the ones we care about. It took me awhile to learn to love Brian too, but when the spoiled rich man disappears and a beautiful,unselfish person takes his place, it was impossible to me not to start to cheer on him and the perfect HEA. Chasing the Dream was easy to read, quick, well written and with well developed characters, main and second ones. I liked the plot, light but with a depth that caught my heart and let me shed some tears at the end.

The cover art by L.C. Chase is great, especially cause it perfectly fits how I pictured the Mcs in my mind.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Rekindled Flame by Andrew Grey

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Rekindled FlameWhen he arrives at the scene of a raging fire with his unit, Morgan doesn’t waste any time going in to rescue a disabled man from his burning apartment. The moment the family who owns the house tells him about their trapped tenant, Morgan notifies his captain and goes. Getting permission isn’t as important to him as saving the man’s life, and it’s a good thing he didn’t hesitate because he manages to pull Richard out of the apartment with no time to spare. Morgan cares about the people he pulls from burning buildings and always checks on them the next day, so when he heads to the hospital to check on Richard, he’s shocked to find that Richard is Richie, his childhood best friend.

He and Richie were next-door neighbors, and in fact, their friend Amy performed a marriage ceremony for them in the barn on her property. Playing wedding with the little girl to keep her busy while her mom got ponies ready for all of them to ride was fun—up to a point. Boys don’t usually like to play wedding, but Morgan had kept the nail-turned-into-wedding-ring he received that day because it was soon after that his father just suddenly packed them up and moved out of town without giving Morgan a chance to say good-bye to Richie, and it’s something that Morgan never forgot.

Now, he offers Richie the spare room in his house while the man gets his life back in order. He doesn’t know it at first, but Richie has nothing left, including hope. Richie was severely injured in a classified mission in Iraq, and he’s never recovered physically or emotionally. His PTSD causes nightmares, and when the arsonist strikes again, this time trying to burn down Morgan’s house, it’s evident that Richie is the intended victim. However, Morgan is more concerned with the fact that Richie is in danger than with the attempt on his house, and he realizes his heart might not survive if he loses Richie again.

But even though Morgan seems to be one-hundred percent committed to getting romantically involved with Richie, their romance is a slow-burn, especially from Richie’s perspective. Between his injury and his inability to be specific about classified information, he can’t participate in helping to find the arsonist. And to top it off, though he cares for Morgan, he’s afraid Morgan is getting in over his head with someone so disabled.

This was a great love story as well as a suspenseful action drama. The guys do get their HEA, but it’s a difficult journey to get there. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well as the MCs and, of course, the German Shepherd and the Golden Retriever puppy featured in the story were the perfect icing on the cake for me. I recommend this one to lovers of Andrew Grey, especially if you happen to enjoy sweet and sexy MCs and those who manage to overcome seemingly insurmountable disabilities.

~~~~~
Cover Art by LC Chase shows a young man bare from the waist up in a close-up on the cover. In the background is a raging inferno, a firefighter fighting the flames, and an empty wheelchair—all important to this story.
An Alisa Review: Planting His Dream by Andrew Grey
Rating:  4 stars out of 5
Planting His DreamFoster dreams of getting away, but after his father’s death, he has to take over the family dairy farm. It soon becomes clear his father hasn’t been doing the best job of running it, so not only does Foster need to take over the day-to-day operations, he also needs to find new ways of bringing in revenue.
 Javi has no time to dream. He and his family are migrant workers, and daily survival is a struggle, so they travel to anywhere they can get work. When they arrive in their old van, Foster arranges for Javi to help him on the farm.
 To Javi’s surprise, Foster listens to his ideas and actually puts them into action. Over days that turn into weeks, they grow to like and then care for each other, but they come from two very different worlds, and they both have responsibilities to their families that neither can walk away from. Is it possible for them to discover a dream they can share? Perhaps they can plant their own and nurture it together to see it grow, if their different backgrounds don’t separate them forever.
 I have enjoyed all the stories I have read by Andrew Grey and when I saw he had another story with a farm setting I definitely wanted to read it.  It really makes me want to go back and read more in the author’s other series that I haven’t gotten to yet.
 Foster is working hard to get his father to see him as an equal on their family farm and after his father passes away he is left to take the reins.  Javi worked the farm with his family the previous year and Foster was drawn to him then, but when they come back when Foster is by himself he gets more of an opportunity to get to know Javi one on one when he offers to help when they arrive early for the picking season.
 I quickly understood Foster and the fears he had in regards to keeping the farm afloat and making changes to make it his own.  The story is told from Foster’s point of view, but the author really helps you understand the struggle that Javi is going through wanting to have something for himself but feeling responsible for his family.  They both discover their love for the other during their short time together while it feels that most of the book is spent with them apart before and after relationship.
 I really enjoyed this story and it was very sweet and even the sex scenes were more on the sweet side than being “hot”.  I just wish that more time would have been spent on how their relationship grew after Javi came back, it was just a jump ahead in time where everything is going well, but other than Javi showing up on Foster’s doorstep you don’t really get much else.
Cover art by LC Chase really gives you a visual for the setting of the book and the items that are shown are reflected accurately in the book.
A Paul B Review: Love Comes To Light (Senses #6) by Andrew Grey
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
love comes to lightArik Bosler receives a call from Ken Brighton offering him a two week fellowship to study art with him in Northern Michigan. Normally Arik would be ecstatic about this opportunity. However, he was injured six months ago, severely burning his hand, making it impossible to paint. Arik agrees but decides that he would go say hello to the renowned artist and thank him for the opportunity then take off. What good is studying with one of the modern greats if you cannot actually apply the lessons learned?
On his way, Arik stops at a gas station close to his destination. A huge intimidating man comes to fill up his gas tank. Being five foot nothing, Arik has always been scared of men who had some considerable height. However, this man also intrigues Arik despite his fear.
Reg Thompson is this man. He is a biker who belongs to the local motorcycle club. While he looks intimidating, he really is a giant teddy bear. He doesn’t mean to scare the cute man and tries to draw him out. He even puts his mechanic into place after the mechanic teases Arik about his height, or lack thereof.
After the two meet at a dinner arranged by Ken, the two men begin to talk and find out they have a lot in common. Both are artists who have had to deal with basically absentee parents. Arik grew up with drug addicted parents. Reg’s mother became distant after the death of Reg’s sister and the onset of mental illness. While Reg has dealt with the trouble of his parents, Arik has allowed the problems of his parents to fester.
As the two grow closer, Arik meets the rest of the members of Reg’s motorcycle club. While only there for ten minutes, Arik is convinced that Reg is no better than his parents and begins to distance himself from Reg. To make matters worse, Arik’s mother shows up wanting to talk with him. Arik must deal with his past if he wants a future that is happy instead of bitter.
This is the sixth book in Andrew Grey’s Senses series. These books can be read individually but having read the past books brings context to parts of the storyline. I absolutely love this series. Usually one of the major characters, if not several of the supporting characters has a handicap of one kind or another. However, this handicap does not define the character. It is a part of the character like being gay or blond. The most powerful character throughout the series, Patrick the opera singer who lost his voice, speaks the most powerfully. He, along with Ken his partner, help show Arik that he might not be able to paint like he used to, he still could develop other methods of expressing his creativity.
The other characters that helps Arik is Bobby Jo, a young girl in the county children’s home who is facing another surgery to fix her malformed hand and Jerry, a young boy from a previous story who is stricken with a muscular disease that has curled his hands. I look forward, as always, to the next book in this series.
The cover art is perfect for the book. L.C. Chase has our young blond Arik standing a few feet away from Reg, who is wearing jeans and a leather jacket without a shirt. Reg looks like he is coming out of the bay to the garage of his service/gas station. They are what I thought they might look like.
Love Comes to Light – Pleasanton
This story represents the last time we will visit Pleasanton, Michigan, a town I made up in my imagination.  However, the area is a place I remember fondly.  When I was about eight or so, my family took a trip around Lake Superior and we spent some time in that area of Michigan.  My memories of that time are sketchy, but I do remember getting on a boat with my dad and seeing the colored layers of rocks that make up Pictured Rocks in Lake Superior.  Later when Dominic and I took a trip the Upper Peninsula years ago, we once again travelled through that area.
It was beautiful with pine forests and sparkling water.  Dominic and I had a wonderful time driving along the lakeshore and we ended up stopping by the lake at a roadside picnic area for lunch.  It was that lunch and our drive that I recalled when I decided to create Pleasanton.   There are small towns in that area of the state and some of them have characteristics that went into Pleasanton, in the end my town is an amalgamation of what I saw and what sprang from my imagination.
A Senses Series Story
Artist Arik Bosler is terrified he might have lost his creative gift in the accident that left his hand badly burned. When he’s offered the chance to work with renowned artist Ken Brighton, Arik fears his injury will be too much to overcome.
He travels to Pleasanton to meet Ken, where he runs into the intimidating Reg Thompson. Reg, a biker who customizes motorcycles, is a big man with a heart of gold who was rejected by most of his family. Arik is initially afraid of Reg because of his size. However it’s Reg’s heart that warms Arik’s interest and gets him to look past the exterior to let down his guard.
But Arik soon realizes that certain members of Reg’s motorcycle club are into things he can’t have any part of. Reg can’t understand why Arik disappears until he learns Arik’s injury was the result of his father’s drug activity. Though neither Reg nor Arik wants anything to do with drugs, the new leadership of Reg’s club might have other ideas.
Excerpt
At the edge of Pleasanton, his nerves began to get the better of him. He pulled into a gas station and up to the pumps, then turned off the engine. He needed gas and a chance to think. He should have stayed home and not put himself through all this.
A tap on the doorframe pulled him out of his thoughts. Arik turned and squeaked at the huge man half leaning into his window. “You want some gas or what?” the man asked gruffly. Arik was belted in or he’d have scooted into the passenger seat to get away.
“Yeah,” he answered shakily. Arik watched as the huge, bald-headed man, dressed in jeans and a plaid shirt with a leather jacket hanging open over the top, stared back at him with eyes that said he wanted to tear Arik apart. At least that was what Arik saw in them. He shivered and tried not to look scared. “Th… thank you?” God, he hoped this guy worked at the station.
The guy didn’t move—he just watched Arik for a few seconds as Arik chilled and willed his legs not to shake while hoping the guy wasn’t about to reach in and grab him.
The huge man pulled back, and Arik breathed a sigh of relief.
“You need to open your gas cover,” the man said, and Arik pulled the gas-cap lever, fingers shaking. He reached over and raised the passenger window. He also raised his partway and felt a little safer. Arik adjusted his rearview mirror, watching the man and wishing like hell he could get out of here. He reminded himself that the two of them had never met before, and the guy pumping his gas had no reason to hate him. That still didn’t stop Arik’s insides from churning. When he heard the sound of the gas nozzle being removed, he pulled out his wallet, checked the pump for the amount, and got out some bills.
“That will be $27.53,” the man said gruffly.
Arik handed him thirty dollars. “Thank you,” he said hastily, and then he raised the window and started the engine. The man might have said something, but Arik pulled away and turned back onto the main road, following the directions his GPS system gave him.
It took a good ten minutes for his breathing to return to normal. He hated that the gas station guy had intimidated him, but he hadn’t been able to help his reaction.
