An Alisa Review: Rough Edges by Cardeno C

Standard

Rating:  4.5 stars out of 5

Kyle has an unwelcome crush on his nemesis Brent. Brent has a welcome crush on his friend Kyle. As it turns out, the line between a friend and an enemy doesn’t have to be a line at all.

Born on the wrong side of the tracks to the wrong family, Kyle Potter has spent his life clawing his way toward a better future. When he gets the perfect job at the perfect firm in perfect Los Angeles, Kyle is sure there are only blue skies ahead. And then he meets perfect Brent Haralson.

Born with a silver spoon to a well-established family, Brent Haralson has never been interested in leveraging his connections. Friends, success, and dates come easily to Brent and rejection isn’t something he has to deal with in life. And then he meets perfect Kyle Potter.

Kyle despises his unwelcome crush on his lazy, arrogant nemesis. Brent welcomes his feelings for his stubborn, brilliant friend. As it turns out, the line between a friend and an enemy doesn’t have to be a line at all.

This was a great story that shows that quick assumptions aren’t always the most correct.   Kyle has had to work hard for what he has and has no respect for those who don’t contribute to society.  Kyle and Brent have been friendly enemies for years, but when Brent gets the opportunity to help Kyle when he needs it he jumps at the opportunity.

Kyle is one stubborn man, no matter what his other friends say he has never changed his views on Brent.  When he is down on his luck Brent takes him into his home and Kyle slowly sees that Brent may not be quite what he seems, but isn’t quite willing to back down from his original views completely.

I loved seeing both of these characters interact.  Even though Kyle is constantly trading barbs with Brent there doesn’t seem to be too much fight behind them.  Kyle is amazed when he does finally open his eyes to really see Brent.  I loved Brent’s attitude towards Kyle, knowing that he uses is attitude as a defense mechanism he slowly begins to break down his walls until they crumble.  Both of these characters are sweet deep down and really just want someone to love them.

Cover art is great and is a sweet picture of the characters together.

A Lila Review: Jumping In (ALPHAS #6) by Cardeno C.

Standard

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

jumping-in-by-cardeno-cWhen love’s on the line, the brave jump in with both feet…

Small town cop Clint Rivera can’t catch a break. His ex of two weeks is suddenly getting married, his dogs tore up his furniture, he’s getting evicted, and he’s out of beer. When he decides to solve his alcohol shortage by going to his ex’s engagement party, Clint winds up too drunk to drive himself home.

Enter gorgeous deputy mayor Hawk Black, the man who constantly shows up unexpectedly and sends Clint’s body and mind into a tailspin with nothing but his whiskey voice and blue eyes. After months of patience, Hawk can finally seduce the man he’s been craving.

Clint’s day might not have started out well, but Hawk’s going to make sure it ends with a bang, preferably in bed. He’ll show Clint some rewards are worth the risk. With love on the line, Clint will need to decide if he can open his heart, tear down his shields, and jump in with both feet.

Jumping In walks the line between romance and erotica. It’s insta-everything, but it works to a certain extent. Clint and Hawk have great chemistry and an easy friendship. I like their banter before and after their relationship.

There are some parts I wish were transition a bit better. They started at a good pace, but as soon as Hawk got his hands on Clint, they went from zero to sixty in less than thirty seconds. For a moment, I was waiting for Hawk to be a shifter, bringing the mating pull into play, but he wasn’t. It worked in the end, but it was a risk the author took.

Overall, if you’re looking for a quick story with good characters and some spice, this is it. If you want some UST, keep looking.

I like the new cover. It’s sweet and goes with the light mood of the story. I like the colors and the cute picture.

An Alisa Audiobook Review: A Shot at Forgiveness by Cardeno C. and Robert M. Clark (Narrator)

Standard

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

a-shot-at-forgiveness-audioSometimes to find love, you must first learn forgiveness.

A dozen years, 2,000 miles, and a law degree after high school, Rafi Steiner continues to harbor resentment toward Isaac Jones, his childhood bully turned NBA star. When Isaac appears at Rafi’s favorite restaurant acting like a long-lost friend, Rafi bluntly dismisses him.

But Isaac is tenacious and he has his heart set on the grown-up version of the boy he always wanted and never forgot. The way Isaac sees it, he and Rafi are perfect for each other, if only he could sink the most important shot of his life: his one shot at forgiveness.

Isaac has lived with his anger towards Rafi since they were teens.  When Rafi shows up Isaac is sure he is just there to make his life hell again.

This story is told from Isaac’s point of view, so we see the sweet actions that Rafi does, but how they are misinterpreted by Isaac due to his tainted view.  When Isaac learns that he is the reason that Rafi plans to move to the city and transfer he is floored, but he begins to look at their past interactions to see them a bit differently.

Robert M Clark did a good job narrating this story.  I could connect with the characters through the voices and emotions he portrayed.  Even though this is a book I have read it gave me a new connection to the story listening to him.

Cover art is nice and catches your eye.

A Stella Review: Not a Game (Friends #1) by Cardeno C.

Standard

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Not a Game by Cardeno CAn accidental meeting and a misunderstanding lead to a life-altering connection.

A new job, a new city, and hopefully a new life. When chubby gamer Oliver Barnaby receives a job offer from the best boutique game developer in the country, he leaves his family and his less than spectacular existence in Oklahoma without a second’s hesitation. Determined to change more than his career and his geography, Oliver implements a plan to finally land a boyfriend. Step one is improving his skills in the bedroom.

A life that looks perfect on paper, but feels empty in reality. Attractive, successful, charismatic Jaime Snow has a life other people envy. His already booming business is growing. He isn’t lacking in friends. And he has no trouble finding a date. But there’s an emptiness in Jaime’s heart and a hole in his life that only the right man can fill.

An accidental meeting, a misunderstanding, and falling in love. When Oliver and Jaime end up at the same bar at the same time, they each see something they want in the other. Going to bed together that first night is easy. Building the lifetime relationship they both desperately crave will require trust, time, and a little misunderstanding.

The beginning of a new series by Cardeno. How could I have resisted? I’m a huge fan, some of her stories are among my favorites and she was one of the first mm author I read. She never disappointed me, because honestly? Cardeno C can comfort me in my shitty days like no other author can do. That’s the reason why I often come back to read one of her books.

Not A Game was a pleasure to read, sweet, very hot. The story is exactly what I love to read. It has everything I love. I have to re read it now. I’m so enthusiastic about it, can you feel my joy?

I met Oliver, geeky, chubby gamer developer and Jaime, beautiful and rich, so sure of himself like Oliver is not and I fell in love with them at first reading, just how at first sight Jaime knew he needed Oliver in his pointless life.

They were perfect for each other, opposites attract has never worked so well in another story. Cardeno nailed all my soft spots, age gap included. Yep the misunderstanding is clear to the reader from the start but who cares? I cared about how they worked so well together, how Oliver found himself in an unexpected relationship, how they fell in lust and love so easily, and when Jaime reveled the truth, they were both so into each other, there were no space for useless drama scenes. For once the HEA was unavoidable and what the MCs and the reader deserve.

Easy and light and hot and sweet and tender and real and… ok I’ll stop but I could give you all the positive adjectives I can think of to describe Not A Game. Another big winner from Cardeno C. Don’t miss it.

The cover art by A.J. Corza fits the story, I like it.

A Stella Review: Strange Bedfellows by Cardeno C

Standard

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Strange Bedfellows coverCan the billionaire son of a Democratic president build a family with the congressman son of a Republican senator? Forget politics, love makes strange bedfellows.

As the sole offspring of the Democratic United States president and his political operative wife, Trevor Moga was raised in an environment driven by the election cycle. During childhood, he fantasized about living in a made-for-television family, and as an adult, he rejected all things politics and built a highly successful career as far from his parents as possible.

Newly elected congressman Ford Hollingsworth is Republican royalty. The grandson of a revered governor and son of a respected senator, he was bred to value faith, family, and the goal of seeing a Hollingsworth in the White House.

When Trevor and Ford meet, sparks fly and a strong friendship is formed. But can the billionaire son of a Democratic president build a family with the congressman son of a Republican senator? Forget politics, love makes strange bedfellows.

Cardeno C will always have a  special spot in my heart. She was one of the first m/m authors I read and some of her books are in my “all time favorite” shelf. So you can imagine my enthusiasm every time she writes a new story. I enjoyed Strange Bedfellows even if I was a little hesitant. I always stay away from books about politics, most of all because I don’t live in the USA.  I ‘m not so sure if what I’m going to read it will match the reality of the current politics or not. Of course I made an exception for Cardeno, I couldn’t resist. And I didn’t regret my choice.  In a way the book was almost shallow (in a good sense), because it didn’t address political aspects, even if it is full of characters that breathed politics since their birth. To me it was better, definitely easier to follow a story otherwise too heavy and not very romantic. Giving the subject I wasn’t expecting something so light and easy, which I so appreciated. I read it in one stand and loved it.

The story between Ford, the 37 years old republican congressman, son of a democratic senator and Trevor, the 42 years old son of the democratic president of the USA was sweet, funny and sexy. A couple of things I particularly liked: first of all I loved how Trevor wasn’t once mad at Ford for being in the closet. He never pressed him to come out, he was always understanding and accepting of Ford’s fears and doubts. Then  there was Ford. He was my favorite character, so loyal to the family and to a career even when it interfered with his love life and forced him to be in the closet. He had duties and commitments that he couldn’t forget, especially with his father’s delicate health. But there was just one tiny problem, the situation between Ford and Trevor was not just a fling, a friends with benefit thing, they were in love with each other. How to solve it?

The title fit the story very well, cause the Strange Bedfellows is made of each time Ford and Trevor met at hotels to stay together, not to just have sex, but to talk, to know each other better and to Ford to discover how to be out in his family’s world. There are some funny moments too and an amazing HEA, in a true Cardeno’s style. I gave it just four stars cause although it was sweet, it lacked of hot parts and the ending seemed to me a little rushed, I would have preferred a couple of chapters more, not cause I’m greedy, but because it would have deserved more time to develop.

Shortly, if you’re a Cardeno fan you have to read Strange Bedfellows, I’m sure you will love it. If she is a new to you author, this story could be a lovely way to become addicted to her characters.

Cover art by Jay Aheer. What can I say about the cover? Not perfect or eye catching but well done. It is okay, nothing more.

WLK synopsis

Strange Bedfellows - cover
Can the billionaire son of a Democratic president build a family with the congressman son of a Republican senator? Forget politics, love makes strange bedfellows.

When Trevor and Ford meet, sparks fly and a strong friendship is formed. But can the billionaire son of a Democratic president build a family with the congressman son of a Republican senator? Forget politics, love makes strange bedfellows.

Excerpt

Where’s your bedroom?” asked Ford Hollingsworth as he tipped his head back to make room for the man licking a path down his neck.

The handsome stranger shoved Ford’s coat to the floor, slammed him against the wall, and wedged his thigh between Ford’s legs, rubbing up against his balls.

Oh. Oh.” Ford bucked. “Your bedroom?”

Despite being mostly clothed, Ford was seconds away from coming in his pants. The inner voice he’d spent most of his life ignoring piped up to remind him that he’d never been this aroused with any woman and never would be. But acknowledging that voice meant walking away from his family and his aspirations, so Ford tried ignoring it, something that had gotten increasingly difficult with every passing year and was now impossible.

Trevor?” Ford had no idea if that was the dark-haired guy’s real name or if he’d created an alias to use with a bar pickup, which was what Ford himself had done. Either way, he was proud he remembered the name, considering he was more turned on than he’d ever been in his life.

Without responding, the man reached for Ford’s shirt buttons and popped them open while he caressed Ford’s chest.
