Synopsis

Unexpected, Book Four

Ash’s life hasn’t been the best so far. Mated to a man he hates, he resigns himself to his fate of being abused. When his mate kidnaps the highly pregnant Alex, they become friends, and to Ash’s surprise, Alex’s rescuer saves him as well. Now he can start a new life, but it’s going to be a lonely one, due to his visible and invisible scars.

D didn’t seek out a man, but one look at Ash and he’s head over heels in love. But Ash needs to work through his issues before he can see D’s love for him. Slowly, Ash learns to trust D, but with their growing feelings, other strange phenomena appear. What’s up with lights turning on without Ash touching the switch and doors opening on their own? Is something dangerous happening and threatening their blossoming love? Or is it something else altogether?

Excerpt III Unexpected Powers

“But you just met me. You risked everything to get me out.”

“Like I told you, I couldn’t let you suffer.” D smiled, even though it was weak.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I’m glad you’re better.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“Okay, then I’ll leave you now. Here’s my cell phone number. If you need anything, let me know.” D handed Ash a card.

“Thank you.”

“It was nice talking to you. I hope to see you again.”

“Yeah, me too.”

D stood and left the room. Ash didn’t look good at all. He seemed to have broken now that he was in safety.

Before he left, D looked for Josh, who was in the kitchen, reading something on his computer. He looked up when D cleared his throat.

“Did he talk to you?”

“Yeah, he did. He’s not dealing well with all this, right?”

“I don’t know. He’s shutting me out. I don’t know why, but he refuses to talk about anything related to his mating, and he spends his days in his room sleeping, brooding, whatever. I don’t know. He barely eats; he barely talks. I’m not sure if I should leave him alone or drag him out, force him to see other people.”

“I don’t know either. I think he needs to go out once in a while before he goes crazy. Maybe I could come over once in a while and take him for a walk? Or simply have a coffee with you two, if that’s okay?”

“Oh, yes. I’d like that, and I think it would be good for Ash. Maybe he’d feel better with you by his side when he has to leave the apartment since you’ve already proven that you can protect him.”

“Maybe. I’ll call you and let you know, then we can set something up. I gave my number to Ash as well, but I somehow doubt he has any intention of connecting.”

Josh chuckled. “I think you’re right. We’ll just force him out of his hole once in a while, okay?”

But when the Prince and his trackers find an important clue, the race to save his beloved is on. Now all he can do is cross his fingers that the scheme they’ve devised will work.

A Stella Review: Two Ruined Christmas Eves by Chris McHart

Standard

RATING 3,25 out of 5 stars

two-ruined-christmas-evesIt’s Christmas Eve, and folk music star Jonas is on his way to the most important gig of his career, the Volksmusik Stadl. Well, he would be if heavy snowfall hadn’t stopped him on the highway.
Fritz has to accompany his grandparents to the biggest folk music event in southern Germany, the worst punishment for a metal fan, especially on Christmas Eve.
When these two men meet at the concert after-party, sparks fly. Will this Christmas Eve be something special after all?

Two Ruined Christmas Eves was the first story I read by Chris McHart and I have to say I was pleasurable surprised. I love Christmas books, shorts as this one (just 31 pages) or longer ones.  The blurb tells you pretty much everything apart that this short was really cute, it was simple and light especially in the way Jonas and Fritz liked each other at first sight and acted on their attraction with no drama and an easiness hard to find around. And this made the book no less real than others. Of course I would have liked a little more development in the MCs relationship but  being so short it was an okay read. And what I love the most was the epilogue, the author did great with it, showing me the couple one Christmas later. Overall a pretty satisfing reading.

The cover art by Chris McHart is very nice and it fits the short perfectly.

My playlist for writing Two Ruined Christmas Eves

You thought I would give you now the most famous German folk music songs, right? Sorry to disappoint. I actually love to listen to rock and metal, so my playlist was the following:

Metallica—Everything From Nothing Else Matters to Enter Sandman

Greenday

Nirvana

Coldplay

Linkin Park

And, most of the time: Queen. The most awesome band on earth. I could listen to Freddy all day. Okay, I do listen to him all day… well, in any case, most of the time I’m writing to Queen. For Two Ruined Christmas Eves was my favorite- can you guess it? Yes. The Show Must Go On. What else?

EXCERPT

Lights flashed at the stage, and a man in a dark suit stepped under the spot they created.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, we’ll go on air in 60 seconds. Before I wish you all a great evening here at the Volksmusik Stadl, I have an announcement. Jonas Goldbaum couldn’t make it. He is presumably stuck in traffic, but we haven’t been able to reach him. Please excuse that he won’t be singing today.”

The man nodded to the camera. “And we’ll go live in three… two… one… Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to this very special Christmas edition of the most famous folk music event in German TV. I’m so happy to welcome you all, and of course, you at home on the TV, to this show. I hope you all have a wonderful evening with our stars. I wish you all a Merry Christmas!”

The curtain opened, and the first tones sounded. A female singer raised her voice over the guitar.

“I’m standing outside, watching you go, My heart bleeds, my soul is lost, without you…” Why didn’t anyone have mercy on him? Fritz clenched his teeth and tried— unsuccessfully— to tune her out. Ignoring the high notes was impossible. This was going to be a long evening. It was even more awful than he’d anticipated. It was horrible. All these smiling faces, the happy or heartbreak songs, the cameras flashing over the crowd, and he in the middle of it wishing desperately he wasn’t there.

Fritz took another sip, imagining it was a beer or something stronger.

Two and a fucking half hours later, the moderator finally told them they were done. Finally! Okay, he wished them all a great evening, and how much fun he had, and yada yada yada, but Fritz tuned him out as well, after he’d heard it was over. Now he just had to make it through the after-show party. This was the worst Christmas Eve ever.

About the Author

I’m a writer of M/M romance and M/M erotic romance from Germany.

I’ve always had stories in my head, but a while ago I allowed them to get out and on paper. Looks like it has been a good decision, although the more stories I write, the more I have in my head. Maybe I’ll have all of them out someday, and there’ll be nothing more to write, but for the next years, I don’t see that coming.

When I’m not writing, I spend time with my family (I have the best husband EVER) and try to keep all my animals happy. I also enjoy gardening and cooking, although I’m still looking for someone to clean up afterwards. And, of course, I love reading, whenever I have a quiet moment.

Writing and reading is my break from everyday stress and I hope you join me!

Luis’ mother turned to him and took his hand with her cold one. Her beautiful blue eyes sought his, and she visibly took a deep breath. “I have to tell you something. Please hear me out before you say anything.”

Luis swallowed hard. What would come now? His hands were clammy, but he could only wipe one on his jeans as his mother still held the other. Luis stared at her face and tried to figure out what was wrong. Something bad happened. Something really bad. Blood pulsed in his ears while he waited for his mother or father to speak again.

“The Vampire King from Munich visited us yesterday. He had a proposal for us. His son, Gerome, needs a mate. He’s seen the picture of you at the coven meeting from a few months ago and thinks you’d be a good match. The prince is going to take over the crown soon, and he needs a mate by his side. You, to be specific.” His mother paused and tightened her hold on his hand. “I agreed. A mating to the prince will bring a lot of power to our coven. And the king paid us a good deal of money for the match.”

“You what?” Luis yelled, trying to pull his hand back, but his mother held him tightly. He jumped up from his seat and tried to yank away from his mother’s grasp. What the fuck were they thinking? They had to be kidding. He was not going to mate some guy he never met. They were totally crazy. Nuts.

His mother didn’t relent, firmly keeping his hand in her grip.

“Let me go! I won’t mate someone you picked! What do you think you’re doing?” His voice cracked, but his mother didn’t even flinch.

“Calm down. You knew this was coming. Everyone gets mated. It’s the way things are done,” his mother said calmly, even though her fingers still dug into Luis’ hand. It hurt, but he couldn’t focus on that now. He needed to get away before they married him off. His mind raced, turning over possibilities. He couldn’t simply mate someone. What if he ran away and hid? Would one of his friends help him to lay low? If the king wanted him as a mate for his son, would hiding help at all? Or would they find him?

Sebastian stepped out of the sticky bus. It was hot for that time of the year, and Germany was melting under a heat wave. Munich was no exception. The temperature was somewhere around 35°C and the air conditioning in the bus was either non-existent or not working. The fact that everyone and their mother seemed to have agreed to take this bus didn’t help to make it more bearable.

Sebastian took a deep breath, but it did nothing to cool him down. All he got was a lung full of heat, his sweat, and fumes. Fuck this shit. He could be at a bar right now, sipping a cold beer. But he wasn’t, thanks to that fucking judge.

He had to be here, the last place he wanted to be. Okay, a few meters more, then he reached the place. The sign was unmistakable: Rehabilitation Center. Fucking shit. That judge had had way too much fun sentencing him. Wasn’t there a law against such things? The urge to kick something, anything in his way, rose, but Sebastian grit his teeth. He was no sixteen-year-old anymore. Instead of kicking something, Sebastian peered into the windows. An empty desk sat near the entrance door. Nobody was there.

Sebastian took another deep breath, which did nothing to quell his anger, and slowly pushed open the door. He wouldn’t get his Community Service hours done by standing in front of the building. And if the judge had his way, Sebastian was going to be here quite a few hours. Two-hundred, to be precise. Fucking two-hundred hours of work in a rehab center. He should kill that judge.

Excerpt

Alex zapped, annoyed, through the channels. He lounged on the couch, bored out of his mind. Sam, his best friend and roommate, had taken up the recliner, reading something. Maybe Alex should do that as well? Watching TV wasn’t going to keep him entertained, since nothing caught his interest, no movie, no documentary, nothing. He zapped on, but stopped at a news report showing a pregnant man. He sat up a bit straighter. What was up with that?
The man’s stomach was swollen, showing he was at least five or six months along. His hands were cuffed in front of his baby bump and tears were streaming down his face. The camera showed a courtroom full of people, slowly sweeping over the interested men and women watching the process.
Alex turned up the volume. What had the man done? And why was he pregnant? He’d heard it was possible, but he’d never encountered someone who’d actually experienced that.
The reporter’s voice came up. “Robert B. was tried for violation of the racial laws. Today’s sentencing was long awaited. No one had heard of pregnant men for years, and there had been uncertainty about the actual jurisdiction in such cases. B., who is, according to doctors, six months along, was sentenced to five years in jail. His child will be put in an orphanage until he is released. The fathering sire has no legal claim over the child. He will be able to visit his child, but he can’t get guardianship over him or her. The child and the carrier will be outcasts of society after that.
“B. broke down after hearing the judge’s decision. Even though it’s forbidden, he clearly hoped the old laws would be overturned. Instead, the judge confirmed that male breeding between the races is still forbidden and punishable. With that, back to the studio.”
The picture changed, now showing a woman in a suit, smiling at the camera. “Thanks to our reporter in Berlin for a summary of today’s events in court. Now to the weather…”
Alex turned down the volume, muting the forecast. He turned to Sam, who had apparently put down his book to watch the news as well. “Did you hear that? How can they judge someone because he got pregnant?”
“I have no idea? Maybe because it’s wrong? Are these children dangerous? I’ve never met one, or heard of one, for that matter, but I guess there’s a reason it’s forbidden. The whole pregnant man thing is so strange, no wonder it’s against the laws. Who knows what’ll come out of such breedings.”
Alex frowned. A new life was precious, not wrong. He couldn’t imagine a child being dangerous, even if it was mixed. Children born from interracial relationships were allowed, as long as one of the parents was female and the other male. Why this didn’t apply to children born from a same-sex relationship was beyond Alex. Even if it was unusual for a man to be pregnant, he shouldn’t be put in jail for something like that.
This was the first case in a long time, according to the reporter, but he’d not given a reason why the laws were upheld. “It’s still wrong to judge someone for getting pregnant.”
“I don’t know. Like I said, there must be a reason why it’s forbidden.” Sam picked up his book again, ending the conversation. Alex took a moment to study his friend’s features as he buried himself in yet another sci-fi book. He was quite handsome with his blond, unruly hair and his strong jaw. The gaze of the piercing blue eyes that never seemed to miss anything flew over the page, pulling Sam into yet another outlandish adventure.
Maybe Sam was right. There had to be a reason it was against the law. Alex was kind of sorry for the man who now faced five years in prison, but then, the man knew what he risked with getting pregnant in the first place.
Alex settled back and focused on the TV again. Sam was not in the mood to discuss the matter anymore, his mind clearly on the story he was reading. As if they’d need sci-fi to experience something unusual. Ever since paranormals had come out of hiding back in the 1980s, going to certain clubs could be more adventurous than anything an author could come up with.
Maybe he should go out today? Blowing off some steam wouldn’t hurt. He’d not gotten laid in quite a while, and a night in one of the mixed clubs sounded too good to resist. It was better than staring at a rerun of a movie.
Alex switched off the TV and stood. “I’m going out, do you want to come with me?”
“What do you have in mind?” Sam looked up from his book. “Dancing? I thought of going to the Downtown.”
“Na, go without me. I’m not in the mood for that crowd.”
“You sure? It’s been months since you’ve been out.” Alex wasn’t surprised, Sam wasn’t one to go out much, and he despised big crowds. The Downtown is a huge mixed club, catering to all kinds of paranormals and humans. Not that paranormals were forbidden anywhere, but they, as well as humans, preferred to stick with their own kind. One of the exceptions was a club like the one Alex was going to visit. A night of dancing, and maybe getting laid, sounded better with every second.

STRW Spotlight Book Excerpt
