A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Shelter from the Storm by Kate Sherwood

Standard

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

This was an unexpectedly interesting story that was fun to read—the perfect enemies to lovers story with a touch of humor and a historical twist.

Grif is a mercenary traveling through the mountains in winter. Even he knows it’s a stupid idea but he needed to leave the last town he stopped in and he really doesn’t care if he makes it through winter or not.

Kiernan is a sweet, innocent young man who thinks the mission his lover, the son of the ruler of his country, sent him on is of utmost importance and he won’t give up until he makes it through the snow-covered mountain pass. When a body unexpectedly tumbles from the cliff above him, he drags the unconscious but still-alive man back to the makeshift shelter he erected for the night.

Little does he know it’s the best move he ever made because, though the gruff mercenary treats him like dirt and steals his supplies, he ultimately also teaches Kiernan how to survive in the winter. He also disabuses him of the notion that he’s going to make it through the pass before spring. And then the worst insult – he opens the highly important message Kiernan is carrying so Kiernan can see what his life is worth to his former lover.

I enjoyed the banter between the characters so much! It was lively, sometimes humorous, always honest, and often painful for Kiernan to hear. Ultimately, Kiernan accepts Grif’s offer to tag along with him and take shelter in a cave until spring. That, of course, lends a lot of time for Grif to teach him how to survive and for Kiernan to teach Grif the meaning of friendship and love.

The story was like an unexpected gem, and I highly recommend it to those who love a good enemies-to-lovers romance and those who like stories set in medieval times.

The cover by Kanaxa features a man dressed in a medieval warrior outfit holding a sword and a shield and in the background a smaller man is looking back over his shoulder. The background is dark gray and close-up readers can see that it’s actually mountains. The whole collage is the perfect representation of Kieran and Giles and their snowbound adventure in the mountains.

About Shelter from the Storm

A healer and a warrior fight to survive the winter . . . and each other.

Grif is tired of life as a mercenary—tired of life, period. So he heads off into the mountains, not much caring whether he lives or dies. But when his indifference leaves him unconscious in a snowbank, a stranger finds him and insists on dragging him back from death.

Kiernan doesn’t really have time to nurse a stranger back to health; he’s on an important mission. He doesn’t know why the message he’s carrying is significant, but he’s determined to deliver it, even if it means risking his life in the winter mountains. Still, he can’t just walk away from a fellow traveler in need.

Grif didn’t want to be saved, and he sure as hell doesn’t want to be stuck with an annoying, naïve do-gooder. But since when do the mountains give men what they want?  The snow is too deep to travel. Food is scarce. Grif and Kiernan learn to depend on each other, and eventually to care about each other. Neither of them wanted it to happen. But sometimes the mountains don’t give men what they want; sometimes, the mountains give men what they need.

About Kate Sherwood

Kate Sherwood started writing about the same time she got back on a horse after almost twenty years away from riding. She’d like to think she was too young for it to be a midlife crisis, but apparently she was ready for some changes!

Kate grew up near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and went to school in Montreal, then Vancouver. But for the last decade or so she’s been a country girl. Sure, she misses some of the conveniences of the city, but living close to nature makes up for those lacks. She’s living in Ontario’s “cottage country”–other people save up their time and come to spend their vacations in her neighborhood, but she gets to live there all year round!

Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s kept herself busy with novels, novellas, and short stories in almost all the sub-genres of m/m romance. Contemporary, suspense, scifi or fantasy–the settings are just the backdrop for her characters to answer the important questions. How much can they share, and what do they need to keep? Can they bring themselves to trust someone, after being disappointed so many times? Are they brave enough to take a chance on love?

Kate’s books balance drama with humor, angst with optimism. They feature strong, damaged men who fight themselves harder than they fight anyone else. And, wherever possible, there are animals: horses, dogs, cats ferrets, squirrels… sometimes it’s easier to bond with a non-human, and most of Kate’s men need all the help they can get.

After five years of writing, Kate is still learning, still stretching herself, and still enjoying what she does. She’s looking forward to sharing a lot more stories in the future.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Kate Sherwood here talking about All That Glitters, one of our favorite recent contemporary romances. Welcome, Kate.

The Romance Taboo by Kate Sherwood

I think I’ve gotten a bit spoiled writing m/m romance. I’ve gotten used to the greater freedom, the way readers are more open to different characterization. I’ve written drug-addicted prostitutes, asexual street kids and neurotic drama queens as romantic heroes in m/m – think I could get away with that in m/f? Probably not!

But I think I got a little cocky. (Cocky! Wow, what a useful word) I forgot that while m/m is more open than m/f, there are still some rules, and a few years ago I broke one of them in Chasing the Dragon. One of my characters cheated on the other.

It made sense to me, in terms of the character (drug-addicted prostitutes aren’t known for their good judgment or their sexual reserve) and the plot (the characters got together way too fast and I needed to show that their infatuation hadn’t solved all their problems). It was a good writing decision, in non-genre terms.

But I heard from quite a few romance readers who were really disappointed. Disgusted, even.

And I believe in the contract between authors and readers—I believe that authors have a responsibility to their readers and should work hard to meet expectations. But, but…

I also like pushing boundaries.

So after the last outing, the idea of cheating stayed with me. Is it ever acceptable for a romance novel to include cheating between the romantic leads?

Maybe if it was really long ago? And they broke up over it, for sure. And the one who was cheated on is still mad about it, but they were just kids at the time and the other character is so, so sorry… can it work for readers?

I sure hope so, because that’s the idea behind my new novel from Dreamspinner, All That Glitters. I’ve written a character who killed the other hero’s brother and I managed to get those two together without significant reader complaints (Mark of Cain). Surely I can help them work through some ancient history, no matter how painful it was?

I gave it a try. I hope it works for you guys!

About All That Glitters

No matter what he tells himself, wealthy NYC architect Liam has never been able to forget his first love, Ben. But as he approaches midlife and realizes something is missing, can he forgive himself for the worst mistake he ever made—the one that left a hole no amount of career success can fill? Or will fear keep him from the full life he really wants?

Liam and Ben were childhood sweethearts, then college boyfriends. But when Liam cheated on Ben, Ben forced himself to cut ties and move on. He’s still living in the small town where they grew up, teaching, but it’s not the life he imagined for himself as a younger man. Still, when Liam returns, he can’t risk his heart again. He certainly can’t allow himself to love Liam again after fighting so hard to get over him.

Neither man wants to let go of the past and face their apprehension at starting over. They don’t want to fall in love a second time—but sometimes love happens whether it’s wanted or not.

All That Glitters by Kate Sherwood is one of those books that I just submersed myself in from the very beginning and happily stayed that way, never wanting to emerge from the story , town of North Falls and warm company of characters Kate Sherwood created.

Instantly I knew everyone deserves an Uncle Calvin, best friends like Seth and his wife Dinah, and well, damn, everyone who populates North Falls including the deputy with her trooper car of authority.  I wanted to move into this town and wallow in its uniqueness and hometown warm glow.  By the end, I wanted to be one of them, quirks, history, and all.

It’s funny because in  one of my Sunday blogs, I had researched authors and articles who wrote down talking about how to write great romance stories.  One said don’t concentrate on secondary characters.  This story just proves how wrong that person was.  North Falls and all its townspeople, Uncle Calvin, Seth, Dinah….they make this story.  They show us the heart and foundation and history  where both  Ben and Liam came from.  Ben and LIam nee them not only to support them but to  supply the men with the weft and warp of this couple’s life tapestry.  Everyone plays major roles in these mens lives and the author weaves them in and out, with a richness of layers both fun, poignant, determined and deep.

The romance of two men who have always loved each other and now have a second chance at their HEA if only they can work through fear and other obstacles is realistic and moving.

The cheating is way in the past for those of you for whom its an issue.

Things I learned?  I so need to plan a baby shower (not a strong point of mine) because I need to play beer baby!!!! Thank you, Uncle Calvin!  I have never laughed so hard as during these scenes.  Maybe I’ll just can the baby shower and find a need to play beer baby on its own.  Along with some of the other twisted games he came up with.  Buy the book just for this.

Nope, when it domes down to it, this book is a treasure.  I laughed, sniffled a little, and outright loved this story.  The characters (man, oh, man, I need Uncle Calvin in my life), feel so real that it almost hurts to realize that I can’t go out and find them and North Falls on a road trip next week.

I highly recommend All That Glitters by Kate Sherwood.  For me, its everything, every word, every sentence, every paragraph,  every page.  Pick it up and get started today.

Cover Artist: Adrian Nicholas.  I sort of like that cover but in a couple of ways it doesn’t represent the book or give the reader an idea of what they are getting into.  It could just as easily be something supernatural instead of contemporary.  Nice representation of Ben however.  Definitely no LIam and that would have helped to show both men on the cover as well as the town.

An Ali Review: Embers (Common Law #2) by Kate Sherwood

Standard
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Small town—big problems. Jericho Crewe is back in Mosely, Montana, trying to deal with police corruption, interfering feds, his newly discovered family members, and, of course, Wade Granger.

He doesn’t really need a biker war on top of it all, but as the bodies start to pile up, it becomes pretty clear that’s what he’s got. Not only that, but Wade’s involved somehow, and as soon as Wade is a part of something, things that seemed clear become cloudy.

With the feds breathing down his neck, Jericho has to find his way through Wade’s maze of half truths and manipulations. It would all be so much easier if Jericho could think straight in the other man’s presence. So much easier if their passionate past could be forgotten, and if he could be sure he’s strong enough to resist the temptation of a passionate present.
So good. Jericho! Wade?? Gah……these books can’t come out fast enough for me. This one picks up right after book one ends. Jericho is staying in his home town to help Kayla try to weed out the bad cops from her force and help her rebuild things again.

Jericho is now on the force with her and it’s not long before another major crime happens. This one involving bikers, his step-mother, some federal agencies and perhaps Wade. Probably Wade. Most definitely Wade?? See, I’m not really sure and I love that about this series. It is a romantic suspense and it keeps your guessing throughout. I “think” I know where this is going with Wade but I’m not completely sure. I’ve second guessed myself on more than one scene.

What I do know about Wade is that he and Jericho have mad chemistry between them. It jumps off the pages every time they’re in a room together. Whether they’re verbally sparring or pushing each other up against walls and putting their hands down one another’s pants, it’s scorching. There are some really great scenes between the two of them in this book.

All of the side characters from book one make an appearance (including Jericho’s demon spawn siblings who make me laugh) and we meet a few more of this town’s quirky residents.

It’s fast paced, fun, sexy and entertaining and the ending leaves you dying for more. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next two books in this series. This shouldn’t be read as a standalone. Make sure you read book one, Long Shadows, first.
Cover art by Natasha Snow:  I love the cover on this (as well as all the others in the series).  They’re simple covers but they are well done and the colors and format are very appealing and eye catching.  Some of my favorites this year.

Trouble comes to Mosely, Montana, from the outside world. When the residents of Mosely are left on their own, they can make things work. Sure, there’s always been a militia operating up in the hills, but they were small-scale—just survivalists doing their thing—until organizers came in from out of state. Now Jericho Crewe and the rest of the sheriff’s department are facing down a heavily armed band of fanatics, and the feds are busy elsewhere.

The odds are hopeless, but Jericho swore an oath to serve and protect the citizens of Mosely. He won’t walk away from that, even if Wade Granger’s begging him to run away somewhere and finally be together the way they always should have been.

But this time, it’s Jericho who refuses to leave Mosely, even if staying kills him.

This fourth and last installment in this series was a fast-paced adventure. The beginning of this finds Wade and Jericho committed to being together no matter how different they may be. Their little town ends up being the site of a major battle between law enforcement and the bad guys. Needless to say both of them are involved in a major way.

I don’t want to say much about the plot due to spoilers but I will say that I loved how things ended up for these two. They get their much deserved hea and I as a reader loved every minute of it.

This should not be read as a standalone. The books in this series are all pretty short but they should be read in order. This is one of the only m/m romantic suspense series I’ve read and since it’s one of my favorite genres I was really excited to find this. It’s low on steam but the UST and chemistry between these two is fantastic. I loved all four of the books and I highly recommend this series.
Cover by Natasha Snow:  I loved the cover of this book, as well as all of the books in this series.  They were uniform but different.  I thought they were all eye catching.

About the Common Law series

Jericho Crewe escaped from Mosely, Montana, when he was seventeen and built a new life for himself, first as a Marine, then as an LA police officer. Fifteen years later, he’s back, and everything is just as confusing as it was before he left.

Especially Wade Granger. Wade’s still a rebel, still a criminal, and still dangerously fascinating. As Jericho digs deeper into the town’s underbelly, he has to decide whether Wade’s the worst the town has to offer, or the only part of Mosely worth saving.

About Darkness, part 3 in the Common Law series

A murdered prostitute. An obvious suspect. Clear evidence. For once, Jericho Crewe has a straightforward crime to investigate, and Wade Granger isn’t involved.

It all seems so simple, but Jericho’s instincts won’t let him rest. As he investigates, he finds troubling suggestions that the murder is a part of something larger and more sinister. But working within the boundaries of the law may keep him from finding the truth. If Jericho doesn’t break the rules, an innocent man may rot in jail while a killer remains free to strike again.

Inevitably, it all comes back to Wade. Because who else knows as much about breaking rules? And who else knows Jericho the way Wade does—not wisely, but far, far too well?

Inevitably, it all comes back to Wade. Because who else knows as much about breaking rules? And who else knows Jericho the way Wade does—not wisely, but far, far too well?
This book picks up a month or so down the road. Jericho is doing is his best to avoid Wade and he’s continuing to work as an under-sheriff for the town. He’s gets a call on a murdered prostitute and while the case and the bad guy seem cut and dried, Jericho thinks something’s not right. He ends up looking into it in more detail and opens up a more complex case than he initially realized.

Of course along the way he runs into Wade again. These two can’t seem to stay apart. They’re like moths to a flame with each other. The UST between them is off the charts as usual but as this story goes along Jericho decides he’s done fighting it. He doesn’t care what Wade does for a living. He wants him and he knows they’re going to end up together. This leads me to my one complaint with this book. When they finally get together it fades to black. Now I don’t usually complain about that. I’m not they type of romance reader who has to have sex scenes in all her books and in fact many of my favorite series are ones filled with fade to black. I just really hated it in this series because the UST has been off the charts and such a major part of the story. I feel like we were waiting for this really great thing and then it was snatched away before we could enjoy it. *boo, hiss*

I have gone back and forth in this series trying to decide if Wade really is a criminal or if he’s working deep undercover for a law enforcement agency. I’m happy to say I still don’t know. The author has done a great job keeping the air of mystery around Wade and even at the end of the this book I still am not sure how this series is going to end for these two.
