Review: The Jock Script (The Script Club #3) by Lane Hayes

Rating: 5🌈

Lane Hayes is at her best when it comes to characters deeply anguished by choices they’ve made or failed to make in their lives. People who are now failing under the pressure, stress, and pain the situation they now find themselves in.

Hayes has that ability to deliver that pain, that shame and doubt directly into the readers hearts, connecting us to the characters and their life choices.

Here in book 3, the angst has never been so apparent, the pain of repression and it’s repercussions so widespread.

We start off with Asher Fitzgibbons, genius, works at NASA, immediate-goal to work at the JPL. He’s decided to, one time only, to hook up with a app for a one night stand.

Asher, diminutive blonde genius, has made a number of impactful appearances in the prior stories but here the tiny perfectionist is given his due.

Oh, what a complicated man he turns out to be, with a heartbreak of a past as a foundation.

The man on the other side of the app? That would be Blake Johnson, coach of girls LaCrosse at a posh private school , and very closeted bisexual.

At first you believe that all the anguish, the repression, and the pain is coming from Blake as he deals with years of self denial and the situations at school. This is heartbreaking stuff here.

But slowly it becomes apparent that Asher too is suffering from some deep emotional issues, and past trauma.

How both men work through all the issues and barriers to arrive at a satisfying relationship is a richly rewarding journey and wonderful read.

I adore these uniquely nerdy geniuses and the men they come to love. Apparently the series isn’t over yet. Another holiday novel and book four is coming.

Great characters, well written storylines, including some deep elements all leading up to heartwarming romances.

Yep! Highly recommended!

The Jock Script #3

The Holiday List #4- coming Nov 2021

Synopsis;

The nerd, the coach, and the hookup…

Asher-

Swipe left, swipe left, swipe left. Sure, the idea of a quick, no-strings intimate rendezvous via hookup app sounds oddly thrilling, but it’s simply not me. Or maybe it is me, because it happened…and I liked it. Until I realized he looked familiar for a reason. A bad reason. Now I’ve made a faux pas with the sexiest man on planet Earth, and my internal karma system requires me to fix it. Help!

Blake-

I may seem like I have it together, but the truth is, I’m a hot mess. I’m so deep in the closet that I can’t remember my real name some days. That’s okay. The benefit of one-night stands is anonymity. Until Asher. Not a total surprise. I’ve always had a thing for geeks, but I’ve never met anyone like him. He’s a pint-sized dynamo on a quest for perfection who can help me come out…if I follow his script.

Hmm. I’m in.

The Jock Script is an MM bisexual, geek/jock romance starring a bowtie wearing nerd, a sexy lacrosse coach, and a shenanigan inducing script!

The Jock Script

Review: Rules of Play (The Script Club #2) by Lane Hayes

Rating: 5 🌈

I really wondered about this story because of the character of George.

That’s tall, cape wearing, genius who’s been a bit of an enigma although he’s gotten a lot of page time within the series to date.

Nice trick. Very vampire like.

So who’s he’s paired up with becomes as much as a surprise as he is . And that makes this story more satisfying all the way.

Rules of Play helps fill in George’s important adolescence stage as well as advance the timeline for the focus group of friends. We get his past and see the entire group more settled into jobs or relationships.

Maturity is advancing,,,, somewhat…

But the person about to come back into George’s life is someone very familiar and close to George’s family.

Aiden is one of Simon’s best friends, and Simon is one of George’s older brothers. Aiden also spent much of his younger years at the Murphy house because of his parents dysfunction and love of alcohol.

A broken down car and a night rescue is all it takes to bring Aiden ,as a mechanic, back into George’s life. George’s boss’s unfortunate love life will keep him there as they plot a way for Newton to romance the girl of his dreams.

Close proximity and really heated libidos bring about all sorts of changes in their relationship, including ones Aiden never anticipated. One where he just might be bisexual.

Complicated characters, realistic situations, emotionally charged conversations about sexuality, and, friendship. All those elements wrapped up in a great romance.

Lane Hayes delivers a marvelous tale full of humor, lusty scenes, warmth and love.

This series continues to evolve and get better with each story.

Love this and everyone novel. Recommending them all.

The Jock Script #3

Synopsis:

The genius, the ex-jock, and a new playbook…

George-

My brother’s friend is hot—if you’re into flannel-wearing lumbersexual former jocks who eat donuts for dinner and still scribble to-do lists on their palms. I’m not. I’m a serious scientist in my final year of grad school. Okay, I admit I have few quirks of my own. I also have a broken truck and a boss who thinks I can help him find love. I’m in over my head. Help!

Aiden-

A few quirks? Really? George is the weirdest dude I know. He wears capes in public, brings a book everywhere he goes, and loves all things spooky. He’s also the smartest person on the planet—who somehow thinks I can help him write a How-To-Get-A-Date playbook for his boss. Yeah, that sounds suspicious. I know baseball; I don’t know anything about love. But I can’t say no. The thing is…I’ve always had a soft spot for George. But falling for my best friend’s brother is against the rules, isn’t it?

Rules of Play is an MM bisexual awakening story where opposites attract and shenanigans ensue!

Review: Following the Rules: (The Script Club Book 1) by Lane Hayes

Rating: 4.5 🌈

Lane Hayes has another great series in The Script Club, winning me over immediately with the first novel which introduces us to the central characters and universe.

Following the Rules also sets out the formal by which all the rest of the romances and stories will follow.

There is a main group of genius’ friends in their last semester of grad school. They have similar intellects and are pursuing careers in Aerospace engineering generally, but more complicated. I’ll let each character describe it. Take my word for it… space, NASA, ….

All are huge nerds in different ways, which makes each a vastly unique personality.

First up is Christopher ā€œTopherā€ Thornton, aerospace engineer studying Astrodynamics… and I’ll leave the rest to him. He’s in need of money as a grant and summer job fell through. His friend, George (and roommate) suggests that his brother Simon needs help to make it through his college courses while he waits to see if he’ll return to the NFL.

That brings up all sorts of issues for Topher as ā€œjocksā€ both attract him and end up being his Kryptonite.

Simon Murphy, ex NFL player, George’s brother, was cut by his NFL team after a series of injuries, including a number of concussions. Now that he’s finished rehab, he’s enrolled in college to finish his degree while waiting to see if his agent can get him back in a NFL team.

But he’s having trouble with his courses, especially the math snd science so it’s George or more specifically Topher to the rescue.

Except straight Simon starts to realize he’s extremely attracted to Topher in every way.

This is a terrific series that deals a lot with a person examining their perceptions about their own sexuality and then realizing that perhaps they’ve either been repressing or denying their true selves until now.

That meeting, here it’s Topher, the person that makes them able to want to ā€œcome outā€ for themselves and live their truth is everything.

Hayes’ characters are always so well done. They feel so unique but never stray into the cartoonish. Like Topher and Simon, they are opposite personalities but layered enough to feel vulnerable and open to both hope and disappointment.

Theirs is a funny, sweet, and a bit dramatic (of course) romance. It’s lovely and a great way to launch this series.

I’ll tell you right now I adore them all!

And highly recommend them, starting here.

Synopsis:

The geek, the jock, and a new set of rules…

Topher-

My friend’s brother needs an academic assistant and I need a job. Problem…jocks are my weakness. Seriously. I lose my ability to speak coherently around muscle-bound hotties. Oh yeah, I lose my inhibitions too—not a good look for a guy with a genius IQ. So what am I going to do about Simon?

Simon-

Finishing college isn’t high on my list of priorities, but my future in professional football is looking bleak. I need a plan B or C, and I could use some help navigating life as an undergrad. Topher is perfect. He’s also a little strange…but in a good way. And I like the way I feel when I’m around him—as though anything is possible. Maybe if we follow our hearts, we’ll find what we’re looking for. But that means changing the rules…

Review: Out for the Holidays, Out for Gold by Lane Hayes

Rating: 4 🌈

Lane Hayes continues her Out of series for couple Gabe and Derek post college with two lovely, sweet short stories.

We meet again Hayes’ great characters, in tightly plotted storylines filled with romance and hope for their dreams, individually and as a couple.

We follow them through each man’s future plans, one for a restaurant and one for an Olympic spot, then to a wonderful romantic conclusion.

Both compliment each other and leave the reader happy and satisfied for the couple and with the stories.

What a lovely way to spend a couple of hours.

Lighthearted, humorous, romantic and sweet. I loved it and recommend both. And Hayes Out of series. Check them all out.

Synopsis:Out for the Holidays

A Dream Come True…

Derek-

This is it! I’m finally opening my own bistro. I’ve spent the last two years getting ready for this moment. I can’t decide if the holidays are the perfect time to begin a new venture, but I’m excited. It would be nice if my family were on board too.

Gabe-

I play water polo. I don’t know anything about the restaurant business, but I want to make sure Derek’s grand opening goes according to plan. I’ll rally our friends, send out invites, and yeah…I’ll even deal with his mother. He’s my number one person and I’ll do whatever it takes to be sure we’re out for the holidays.

Out for the Holidays is a low-angst MM romance featuring Derek and Gabe from Out in the Deep…and a host of friends from the Out in College books!

Out for Gold

Chance of a Lifetime…

Gabe-

Winning a spot on the Olympic water polo team is my lifelong goal and guess what?…I made it! Of course, nothing goes smoothly. This is a bad time for a shoulder injury and an even worse time for my dad to show up out of the blue. I might be doomed.

Derek-

Family isn’t easy. Trust me, I know. But in my experience, ignoring obvious issues only makes them more challenging in the long run. I can’t solve Gabe’s problems with his dad, but I’ll help if I can. Win or lose, my man is going out for gold.

Out of Gold is a low-angst MM romance featuring Derek and Gabe from Out in the Deep in a full-circle quest for the ultimate prize…love.

*OUT FOR THE HOLIDAYS was originally featured in the holiday collection, Gifts for the Season. Since the anthology is no longer available, I wanted to publish it on my own and add new content. OUT FOR GOLD is a brand-new novella that really brings the whole story full-circle. Both shorts feature Derek and Gabe from Out in the Deep.

Better Than Candy from Better Than Beginnings, A Better Than Good Short Story Collection

Aaron gave me the silent treatment for a while, and I have to admit I didn’t mind the quiet. For an hour anyway. Then I did mind.

ā€œCome on. You can’t not talk to me all day.ā€

ā€œOh, so now you want to talk?ā€ he huffed.

ā€œYeah. Let’s talk. Come closer so I can touch you too. I’ll be good.ā€ I perched on one of the stools at the island in our kitchen and swiveled to face the hockey game on the flat-screen across the room.

ā€œI don’t trust you,ā€ he grumbled, crossing his arms and glaring at me.

ā€œCome on. I’ll behave. Give me a kiss. Please?ā€ I gave him my best ā€œYou can trust meā€ look.

Aaron sighed dramatically before shuffling over to stand between my thighs. Directly in the way of the hockey game.

ā€œAre you going to make it up to me? Or are you going to watch the Steelers?ā€

ā€œOkay, funny guy, let’s start with a little re-education. The Steelers are a football team.ā€ I pulled him into my arms and squeezed him tightly, burrowing my chin into his shoulder and blowing raspberries on his neck. ā€œSadly, their season is over, but thankfully it’s basketball and hockey season now. You’re currently blocking a hockey game, but not my Penguins, so I’ll let you off the hook.ā€

ā€œExcuse me?ā€ he huffed irritably.

ā€œYou heard me. If you’d like to take some time to make up for my hour in hell, I will more than gladly join you…on the sofa, in the bedroom, or even in that green guest bathroom with the cool new towels we just bought. What’s it gonna be?ā€ I held him even tighter and tickled his sides.

He laughed, his eyes twinkling with restored humor as he stepped out of my reach and peeled off his T-shirt.

ā€œFirst of all, the color is eucalyptus, not green. Hockey and basketball are only marginally better than football andā€¦ā€ He furrowed his brow when I smacked his ass for sheer blasphemy. ā€œAnd, you are making up with me. Not the other way around. You behaved like a five-year-old. I had no idea you were such a brat.ā€

ā€œYou promised not to torture me, but you did anyway. Even that lady at the store agreed you should have gone alone,ā€ I singsonged.

He stepped between my thighs and rested his arms over my shoulders.

ā€œShe called you my husband. That was kind of funny.ā€

ā€œYeah.ā€ I kissed his nose and pulled him closer to squeeze his ass.

ā€œIt didn’t freak you out?ā€

ā€œNope. And you wanna know why?ā€

ā€œHmm?ā€

ā€œ ’Cause I’m gonna marry you someday.ā€

ā€œHow do you know that?ā€

ā€œI just do. You’re my person. And even though I can think of about ten other things I’d rather do with you, going shopping wasn’t the worst ’cause I still got to be with you.ā€

Aaron bit his bottom lip and nodded. ā€œOh, that was good, Matty. I almost can’t remember why I’m mad at you.ā€

ā€œYou’re not mad. You love me. You just don’t know it yet.ā€ I scooped him over my shoulder in a fireman’s hold before he could protest. ā€œNo more talking. You have some making up to do.ā€

I carried him into our bedroom and tossed him onto the bed before kicking off my shoes and pulling my sweater over my head. Aaron undressed quickly, then folded the duvet back and got on all fours in the middle of the bed. I gulped when he shook his ass in invitation. Fuck, he was sexy. I stepped out of my jeans and boxer briefs in a hurry and immediately reached for my cock. I was so hard it hurt. I approached the bed and kneeled behind him, running my fingers along his spine and over the curve of his hips.

Aaron turned to give me a seductive look. ā€œWhat are you waiting for?ā€

ā€œSometimes I can’t believe I’m here with you.ā€

He frowned before straightening and scooting toward me, wrapping his arms around my neck. ā€œBut here we are. And I think this is the way it’s supposed to be,ā€ he whispered.

I brushed my lips over his and closed my eyes for a moment. ā€œMine.ā€

Synopsis

Charlie Rourke is an ultra fabulous human whirlwind on a mission to launch the next biggest band in the world. However, he might have taken on more than he could handle when he signed on to manage Zero. Promoting a rock band and finding gigs shouldn’t be hard. They’re a talented group with a ton of star power. If Charlie can find the right record label, he’s sure he can help them get to the next level. The only problem is the skater boy slash bassist with a quirky sense of humor. He’s annoying and silly, and he’s exactly Charlie’s type. Except he’s straight.

Ky Baldwin isn’t afraid to switch things up. He loves a challenge as much as anyone, but Charlie doesn’t make things easy. Zero’s manager is a force of nature with a razor sharp tongue, a quick wit, and a no-nonsense attitude. Ky can’t stop thinking about him. Winning over Charlie becomes Ky’s pet project. But when the ice between them thaws, neither is prepared for the intensity of going from enemies to lovers. They’ll have to decide if they’re willing to start from scratch and take a chance on the unexpected.

Excerpt

ā€œI know that was random, but it’s not a bad idea if you think about it. Want something to drink?ā€ Charlie asked as he moved toward the kitchen.

I grabbed his wrist before he got anywhere. ā€œHang on. What are you doing?ā€

He cocked his head curiously but didn’t pull away. ā€œI’m being practical. If you read any further about Virgos you probably found out we’re known for being sensible. And polite. So, I’m politely asking if you’d like a beverage while sensibly suggesting that I help out with your skating lessons.ā€

ā€œOkay. First up…I don’t want a fuckin’ snack and second, it’s not a skating lesson. We’re skateboarding,ā€ I said, glowering at him.

ā€œI’ve heard it said both ways. Skating, skateboarding. I looked it up in Urban Dictionary too, so I’m pretty sure I’m right.ā€

ā€œNo. There’s something in your tone that makes it all wrong. Like you’re purposely trying to sabotage this.ā€

Charlie opened his mouth in a perfect O. ā€œGasp! I wouldn’t do that!ā€

ā€œCut the crap. You’re doing it now. You don’t want to learn, and you don’t want Oliver to either. It’s a control thing. But you can’t control what you don’t fuckin’ get. So take a seat and let me teach him without you freaking out or—why are you looking at me like that?ā€

ā€œLike what?ā€

ā€œI don’t know. You’re doing something weird with your eyes, though. You look spaced out.ā€

ā€œMmm. I’m trying not to swoon. You look so fierce and you’re holding my hand, Ky. You should feel my heart. It’s beating out of my chest. Seriously.ā€ He fluttered his lashes a few times and bit his bottom lip.

I chuckled softly and stepped closer. ā€œAre you flirting with me, Char?ā€

ā€œNo, it’s the other way around. You’re flirting with me. Big macho displays really get my motor running. Medium-sized ones do too. I love it whenā€¦ā€

Okay, so I lost myself. I tuned out the sound of his voice and concentrated on him. The mischievous glint in his eyes, the proud set of his shoulders, and the way his mouth curled at the corner. He was doing it again. Owning the moment. Taking it over. Charlie looked for weakness in any form, then slyly made adjustments before moving in for the kill. No doubt he thought I’d back down fast and run away. I wasn’t going anywhere.

I fixated on his bottom lip and inched closer. He kept talking…something about dick size or muscles…I wasn’t sure, but I liked the cadence of his voice. The teasing lilt and easy humor. I let go of his wrist, brushing his fingers before setting my hand on his hip. He went perfectly still.

Before he could ask me what the fuck I was doing, I kissed him.

It was more of a press of lips than a grand gesture. And though it might not rank as the kind of kiss that would change the world, I immediately knew it would change mine.

Everything in me went on high alert. I’d never been so in tune with a moment. The flutter of his eyelashes, the brush of his nose, and the soft sweetness of his lips against mine. Fuck, it was amazing. Like mind-blowing amazing. He tasted like cherries and smelled like sunshine mixed with something exotic.

I couldn’t be sure over the roar of my heart attempting to beat its way out of my chest, but I thought he hummed in approval, so I angled my head slightly to deepen the connection and pulled him closer. If he was anyone else, I probably would have stuck my tongue between his lips and let my hands roam all over his body. I wanted to, but I didn’t want to scare either of us. So I stayed where I was until the need for oxygen became an issue.

Then I jumped back two feet and stared at him with my eyes bugged out. ā€œHoly fuck.ā€

Charlie set his fingers on his bottom lip and blinked like he was coming out of a daze. ā€œYou kissed me,ā€ he said softly.

A Lila Review: Starting from Zero by (Starting From #1) by Lane Hayes

Rating:Ā 4 stars out of 5

Justin Cuevas is going through a rough patch. A broken relationship, a scandal, and the demise of his band have shaken the aspiring rock star’s confidence. Working two jobs and sleeping on his friend’s sofa isn’t ideal, but Justin isn’t ready to give up yet. With a little luck, he’s hoping to re-launch his music career in LA with his new band, Zero. The key is to stay focused, and not get distracted by his past…or the sexy songwriter he can’t get out of his head.

Gray Robertson has written dozens of hits and worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. But he’s never met anyone like Justin. The younger man is fiery, passionate, and smart. A powerful voice for a new generation. Other than an unforgettable one-night stand and a passion for music, the two men have nothing in common. Or do they? Justin knows the out-of-the-blue challenge to write a quintessential love song is a huge opportunity. And it’s the ultimate test for someone who’s doesn’t believe in happily ever after. When sparks fly, Justin and Gray realize they have a shot something special if they start from zero together. Maybe even love.

Starting From ZeroĀ is a May-December story with a musical twist. It has a handful of characters that played an important role but the majority of the story is between Gray &Ā  Justin and how they merged their worlds.

I’m not a music person so the more technical explanations were boring for me, as well as the songwriting. The performances were crucial to understanding the characters but still not interesting enough.

There’s a lot of romance, hot scenes, and little drama. The story is well-written and having both POVs gave the reader the opportunity to get closer and cheer for them. I did enjoy how comfortable Gray and Justin were about their sexuality and how it was not a real issue for them.

The cover byĀ Reese DanteĀ is a bit generic but fitting for the story. It catches the eye when it’s among other covers due to his with and gray background and simple font.

This was one of the best books I’ve read in awhile. I always enjoy this author’s work but this one really stood out to me. The writing here was gorgeous. In addition to being a very good book, it was also very romantic. One of those that makes you do a happy sigh when you’re done reading it.
The story revolves around two men who on the surface seem very different. They meet at a club after Justin performs and they are immediately attracted to each other. They agree to go somewhere to talk but they neither thinks it will go anywhere and neither is looking for a relationship anyways. Their chemistry jumps off the pages and they find they are so attracted to each other they can’t stop at just talking. After a scorching scene public bathroom sex, they go their separate ways. Fate has different ideas and brings them back together a short time later when they end up working together.
I liked both of the MC’s very much and I especially liked them together. I’m not generally a big fan of age gaps but I thought it was really well done here. I found their relationship believable despite the differences in their life experiences. I rarely comment on sex scenes in my reviews because I can take or leave them depending on the overall plot. Here though they really stood out. These two were smoking hot together. I think this author did a great job of not only showing their chemistry but also used the scenes to show their overall relationship development.
If you’ve read this author’s Out In College series you will recognize Justin. He is the older brother of Rory from book three. Both Rory and Christian makes some appearances in this. If you have not read that book though it will not matter. This book is totally a standalone.
There was nothing about this book that I disliked. I thought it was really well done and I highly recommend this. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Cover:Ā  I like the cover. It’s is eye catching and visually appealing. I also feel the model on the cover fits the main character.

Synopsis

Excerpt

Justin turned to me with a fiery expression and gestured toward the glittering lights below. ā€œEveryone here wants more than what they have. And I guess I’m the same. I don’t need recognition and I sure as fuck don’t want love, but I wouldn’t say no to a few bucks,ā€ he commented with a laugh. ā€œWhat about you?ā€

I did a double take. I was two steps behind, struggling to keep up, and if possible, memorize every word he’d said. I hadn’t been around anyone so raw or so honest in a long time. He made rules and broke them with at whim, letting me in and then shutting me out. He had a way of revealing himself that made me feel as though he was holding a mirror to me, daring me to acknowledge my broken pieces too. He was either slightly insane or incredibly gifted. I suspected it was the latter. The cadence of his speech lured me in…and made me want more. I’d tell him anything he wanted to know, just to be near him and this intense spark of…newness, creativity, and wonder.

ā€œWhat about me?ā€ I asked in a low raspy voice.

ā€œWhat do you want to accomplish before you leave the planet?ā€

ā€œI want to write the perfect song,ā€ I replied unthinking.

ā€œThere’s no such thing.ā€

ā€œMaybe, maybe not. But it would be nice to leave something that felt special.ā€

Justin held my gaze then inclined his head in agreement. ā€œYeah. I want that too.ā€

We stared at each other. Whispers of conversation floated from the far corners of the rooftop deck. We weren’t alone, but we might as well be. I couldn’t remember ever feeling so intimately connected to someone I’d never really touched. It was puzzling and enchanting at the same time.

He shivered when the breeze kicked up. I took it as a sign from above and pulled him against me. I had to feel him. I studied the sexy indentation in his bottom lip before giving into impulse and resting my hands on his hip. Justin gave me a funny look but he didn’t push me away.

ā€œYou shouldn’t be anonymous. You have too much to share. Too much to say,ā€ I said.

ā€œWhat are you doing?ā€

ā€œI…I’m not sure. Is this okay?ā€

ā€œYeah. It’s good.ā€ Justin nodded and snaked his arms around my waist.

We were still for a while. He was so close I could feel his breath on my lips. The lingering quiet was deceptive. A casual observer might have mistaken us for old lovers engaged in a tender moment. Or maybe they’d guess we were tentative strangers anxious to make the right moves. Not too fast, not too slow. Neither was correct. There was no quiet here. An electric current sizzled and hissed between us. Intense sexual awareness and something more. Something fiery and passionate. He was wild and rough with jagged edges and a sharp mind. Instinctively, I knew I should proceed with caution because walking away wasn’t an option.

ā€œI want to kiss you,ā€ I whispered, inching closer so our noses brushed.

Justin gave me a crooked smile and tugged at my belt loop. ā€œThen do it.ā€

I tilted my chin slightly and pressed my lips to his. He was deceptively tender at first. He closed his eyes and hummed into the connection. When I licked at the corner of his mouth, he let me in without hesitation. I couldn’t get enough. He tasted like gin and nicotine with a hint of peppermint. All the things I apparently couldn’t do without.

I pulled him closer, cupping the back of his neck to kiss him harder and deeper. Our tongues twisted in a growing frenzy until everything and everyone around us dissolved into white noise. Justin lulled me into complacency and let me think I was in control. I pushed him back slightly and wrapped my fingers around his neck to keep him in place when he leaned forward to nip my bottom lip. He grinned like a madman and then lowered his eyelashes in a show of faux subservience. I didn’t trust him to stay still or obey for a second. Justin was wild and headstrong. He wasn’t going to do anything that wasn’t either his idea or a bad idea.

I should have known then that I’d met my match.
