A Jeri Review: Pay It Forward (Giving Back #1) by Nic Starr

Standard

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

This was a sweet romance with very little angst or drama. It wasn’t exceptionally fluffy either and there was really only 1 sex scene. Just, what I like to call, a palate cleanser.
Bailey has a bit of a crush on the barista at a local coffee shop. Turns out the barista is the owner and might have a crush himself. And so they go on a date. SHOCKING! It seems that jumping into bed usually comes first and then a couple falls into a relationship. But this time they actually went in the right order.
The most drama is Tom not wanting to accept help from his friends and then later Bailey not wanting to accept help from Tom. I guess every book, no matter how sweet it is, needs some sort of discord that needs to be worked out.
There isn’t a lot for me to say about these 2 ordinary guys finding love with each other. If you need something sweet that will make you smile, this is it.
Cover art is sweet and appropriate for the story.

Forced to leave home as soon as he finished high school, Bailey McCreedy’s focus has been on earning enough money to survive. All he needs is a roof over his head and to keep his small mobile lending library running. Books are Bailey’s escape, and he loves to share the joy of reading with those who don’t have access to them.

Tom Brooks’s upbringing is very different to Bailey’s, with a loving family, a good education, and a high-flying job—that is, until things came crashing down. Tom opens a coffee shop, struggling to build his business and reluctant to accept help, operating under the misguided belief that he must pay penance for his sins. Watching Bailey work with the street kids opens Tom’s eyes to the reality that accepting help is not a sign of weakness, and that he is so much more than his past mistakes.

But as Bailey falls for Tom, with his charming manner, obvious care for others, and group of successful friends, Bailey’s own sense of self-worth threatens to tear them apart. In the face of intensifying challenges, he’s reluctant to confide in Tom, afraid he’s not good enough.

A bright future will require Bailey to heed his own advice—people aren’t defined by their failures or inability to live up to the expectations of others. It’s time for Tom to pay it forward, and Bailey needs to accept the help and love that Tom offers.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with Nic Starr

Hi. Thanks for inviting me to your blog to answer some questions. It’s always fun to see what people are interested in knowing about my writing. It’s Friday morning here in Australia, and I’m enjoying a cup of coffee while typing my answers. Here’s my view – a misty wintery morning in the countryside.

How much of yourself goes into a character?

Everything I know is based on my education and life experience. I have opinions, and a strong set of personal values. It would be impossible for this not to make an appearance in my characters. I see some of me in my characters emotions, how they react to certain situations, and their likes and dislikes.  I think that’s why so many of my characters like to cook, enjoy a drink and don’t often have a gym membership. LOL.

Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write?  Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

Up until now I’ve written contemporary romance. It’s a genre I feel comfortable with and can write without too much research. I don’t think I’d enjoy the level of research required to write in a genre such as historical for example. For me, research comes down to things like fact finding on places and cultures (such as when I write stories set in the US), or researching occupations (such as undercover police work in my latest release). I’ve also researched interesting topics such as laws targetting outlaw bikie gangs and how to kill someone with an insulin overdose. I hope no one is tracking my google history!

I’m only now getting into world building. I’ve started a paranormal series featuring shifters. So far it’s been interesting to create the world my characters exist in, to define the pack structure and culture. My series is about a certain affliction that impacts the shifter world, so it’s been fun to consider all aspects of how this affliction would present itself and be dealt with in my world.

One area of research I do enjoy is finding out more about the craft of writing. I read books, take courses and listen to podcasts. We never stop learning.

Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

Did I ever! The first romances I remember reading were the Mills & Boon paperbacks my Nana had stuffed in boxes at her house. I’d stay with her every school holiday and spend countless hours reading. My mum worried I’d get bored going to the country but that was never the case. I’m not even sure why Nana had all those books because she wasn’t a reader at all. I think she bought them home from the hospital auxillary, probably because I was coming to stay.

My Mum was and is a huge reader, so I think I developed my love of books from her. I used to read everything she read and from a very early age. I think I was eleven when I read Flowers in the Attic (my young self totally drawn in to the world of Virginia Andrews). Some of the early books I remember reading were the books of Catherine Gaskin, Mary Stewart, Jackie Collins, Jilly Cooper, and the list goes on…

How do you choose your covers?  (curious on my part)

I choose my covers based on the overall design and how it makes me feel. Does it capture the mood of the story? Are the cover models representative of my characters? Does it appeal to me at an emotional level? Will it look good in paperback? Will it stand out as a thumbnail?

Some of my covers have been premades that I’ve seen and fallen in love with. For example, I saw the cover of Rustic Melody and knew I had to have it – there was something about the guy on the front and the colours that just called to me. So the cover came before I even had an idea for the story. I’ve got a folder on my desktop with another half-dozen covers waiting their turn. LOL

Other covers are designed by cover artists based on my specifications. I provide information on the tone of the story, the characters and key elements of the plot. From there a cover artist usually supplies a number of sample covers for me to choose from. Once I’ve narrowed down the general look and feel, other modifications are made such as colour tones, positioning of the elements on the cover, and tweaking the font for the title and author name.

In the case of my most recent cover for Lies & Deception, the super talented cover designer Anna Sikorska, used the inspiration pics I’d been working with for my main characters, Mitch and Finn, so I couldn’t be happier. She performed her magic to adjust the tattoos on both men and I had my perfect cover men. I also loved the colour palette.

If you could imagine the best possible place for you to write, where would that be and why?

My house in the country makes the perfect writing retreat. It’s peaceful and will less interruptions than I get at home in Sydney where I have two teenage girls coming and going. The photo I shared above show just how quiet it is around here. Bliss.

Thanks for the questions. I hope you enjoy Mitch and Finn’s story.

Happy reading,

Nic

I’m not sure why I tried this because I have a bad record with motorcycle club books.  But, hope springs eternal and both the cover and the blurb caught my eye.  I’m so glad I tried this because it was really, really good.
The blurb does a good job explaining the overall plot.  I was immediately caught up in the story and I also immediately liked both of the main characters.  I wasn’t sure I would find Finn’s problems legitimate but I did and I really felt sorry for the bind he was in.
When Mitch and Finn finally get together their chemistry is off the charts.  I loved the two of them together and was rooting for them the entire time.
The overall plot in regards to Mitch infiltrating the MC club was fast paced and entertaining.  There is a bunch of action and it feels realistic without being too gritty.
The side characters really added to the story.  I was hoping the bad guy would get his (you’ll have to read to see if he does) and I was hoping for something good to happen for Peter (maybe he’ll get a book of his own someday?).
This was my first time reading this author but I will definitely be checking out her other works.  This was one of the more entertaining stories I’ve read so far this year and I highly recommend this.
Cover:  This cover was done by Tiferet Design and I like it a lot.  It’s an eye catching cover and the models on the front fit the MC’s descriptions really well.

How do you find love when someone doesn’t want you to be happy?

Patrick Edwards is dealing with a double whammy. Unwanted attention from his housemate’s boyfriend is making him feel uncomfortable in his own home, and he’s facing uncertainty with his employment as an administrative assistant at the local elementary school. He finally breathes a sigh of relief when a friend puts him in contact with Simon, who has a vacant room.

Simon Dawson is a paramedic who doesn’t hesitate to help Patrick. After all, no one should live in a house where they don’t feel safe. Simon develops feelings for Patrick, but doesn’t act on them—Patrick’s moved from a bad situation and doesn’t need his new housemate hitting on him. However, a weekend away changes everything when Simon realizes Patrick returns his feelings.

But someone doesn’t want Patrick and Simon to be happy. A series of strange letters arrive at the house, and things will get a lot worse before the two men get their happily ever after.

Patrick’s Savior is a novel of approximately 69k words. It is part of a series but can be read stand-alone.

Excerpt

Patrick shivered, suddenly aware of the drop in temperature as the last of the day’s warmth faded. Or maybe it was just that he regretted the direction the conversation had taken. Instead of the pleasant romantic evening he’d planned, he’d made Simon talk about what were obviously painful memories. He wanted to ask more, to find out what Simon had done that caused the rift with his mother, but at the same time, he wanted to end the evening on a happy note. He reached out and grasped the hand Simon held out. Simon tugged, and Patrick flowed with the movement, scooting across the blanket and nestling up against Simon, who wrapped an arm around him and held him close. Simon’s scent filled his senses and his warmth permeated the thin layer of clothes between them.

Patrick tilted his head back to look at him, but Simon was watching the sky. Patrick stared back at those same stars. What did Simon see in the glittering patterns? Did he see the same things Patrick did? What was he thinking as he held Patrick and gazed at the sky? And did he feel the same things Patrick felt—the fluttering in his stomach and hammering of his heart that hinted at the emotions bubbling inside?

“Thanks for arranging tonight,” Simon whispered, his breath warm against Patrick’s cheek. “I’m glad you told me about your family. The picnic was a wonderful idea and it’s nice spending time together, just the two of us.” Simon kissed his temple.

Patrick smiled into the darkness. “I’m thankful you didn’t find the idea of a picnic too sappy.”

“Who said anything about it not being sappy?” Patrick tensed, but only for a moment as Simon chuckled and tightened the hug. “I, for one, happen to be a big fan of sappy. But Patrick?”

“Yeah?”

“How about we take this party inside?”

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Runaway (World of Love) by Nic Starr

Standard

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Dr Nathan Powell is ready to settle down near his family, and hopefully find the man of his dreams. He returns to the small coastal town where he grew up, but while life is simpler than it was in the city, there are also complications—like patients’ reactions to an openly gay doctor. And like running into Nate’s first love, Damien, an out-and-proud local business owner who is unwilling to be any man’s dirty secret. The reunion reignites old desire even while it stirs up Nate’s guilt over the way things ended with Damien.

When Nate’s nephew runs away, Damien accompanies Nate on his mission to find the young man. The drive to Sydney, and the search of the city, gives Nate time to reconnect with Damien—and to wonder if he made the right decision years ago—when he determined a future for them was impossible. Is a fresh start realistic for two men in their forties? But before he can ponder the second chance they’ve been given, Nate must locate his nephew.

Runaway is a short wonderful story of personal exploration and acceptance by Nic Starr.  Dr. Nathan Powell had his high school first love and steps out of the closet crushed by a bigot.  Years later he returns home, ready to settle into a practice and reunite with his sister and her family.  But that comes with all the old feelings he still hasn’t dealt with all these years and the man he never forgot.

I thought the author brought this stunted man to life. Perhaps not stunted but halted in some way.  He pushed parts of his past below the surface the better to cope and the author lets the reader see the whole picture of what that option has done to his life and his family’s.  Several believable elements start to break up Nathan’s emotional blockades.  One is his reuniting with Damien and Damien’s fresh outlook on their past together.  The second is Nathan’s nephew.

Runaway could easily have been enlarged.  The characters are wonderful, from the main couple to the secondary ones like Nathan’s sister and children.  Sydney and its memorable stopping points also acts  as another main character here as well.  It colors the story with its  own unique vibe and energy.  It certainly made me want to pack up and head out to visit as well.

Love to read romances with a special location in mind?  Here’s one with a down under heart I absolutely recommend!

Cover art by L.C. Chase is perfect.  I love this cover.  It works for the characters and storyline.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Nic Starr here today talking about her latest release Runaway and giving us a tour of some of her favorite places in Sydney. Welcome, Nic.

✒︎

A big thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me today as I celebrate the release of Runaway.

Runaway is part of the Dreamspinner Press World of Love collection. The World of Love stories are “contemporary romances spotlighting the unique features, qualities and attributes of a specific country as well as the universality of love wherever it’s found.”

I’m using this release as a chance to show more of my beautiful city. Runaway, the story of Nate and Damien, takes place in the Australian state of New South Wales, starting in a small country town on the north coast where both men live, followed by time spent in Sydney.

Sydney Harbour

Sydney Harbour is the key focal point of Sydney and a lot of events take place on or around it. You’ve most likely seen or heard of the magnificent New Year’s Eve fireworks display that occurs each year, but there are a lot of other events that showcase the beautiful location.

Here are two of my favourite things to do around the harbour.

♡Open Air Cinema

For about 6 weeks during the summer months, the harbour foreshore becomes a movie theatre! A different movie is shown each night, preceded by dinner and drinks. It’s a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours as it overlooks the Botanic Gardens, the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This is my favourite event of the year: sharing a meal and a bottle of wine while watching the sun set, then seeing the huge movie screen rise. It looks like it’s coming straight out the water. And while the movie is playing, you can see the lights of the city.

Here’s a photo taken while the screen was rising before the movie started. You’ll have to agree it’s pretty spectacular!

♡Wine Island

My new discovery is Wine Island. Sydney Harbour is dotted with some small islands and they are available for events. Wine Island is an event where you spend the day tasting wine from a huge number of winemakers so it combines two of my favourite things – wine and a day spent in the sun. The day started with a glass of bubbles on a ferry as we were taken to the island. The theme from the TV show the Love Boat was playing in the background so it was destined to be a great day.

I hope you liked seeing a little piece of my city and enjoy experiencing a little more when reading Runaway.

A Caryn Review: Sebastian & Owen (Storming Love: Tsunami #3) by Nic Starr

Standard

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

sebastian-owen-cover-200x300-pxThis is a sweet novella about an established couple, Owen and Sebastian, living and working together in Tasmania for the past 6 years.  After an injury leaves Owen, who is 6 years older, with chronic pain, disability, and depression, he starts to doubt his worthiness to be partnered with Sebastian.  It is a typical trope:  “I’m not good enough for you, so why would you want to be/stay with me?”  I usually see it written in the beginning of stories, when it hinders a couple from getting together in the first place.  This couple, however, has a very strong foundation, which makes it all that much harder for Sebastian to accept that Owen could possibly doubt his love and faithfulness.  And although it is a fairly tired theme, I liked how the author worked it into an established relationship, which actually made it more fresh and certainly more realistic.

With those misunderstandings in place, arguments ensue, and ultimately Sebastian ends up at their island house while Owen stays in their city apartment.  Owen has an epiphany about their relationship and wakes up determined to fix everything, and that is when he hears about the impending tsunami – about 75% of the way through the book!  Now he just has to get to Sebastian, and he races against the countdown for the wave to impact the island.

The story was predictable, but that did not lessen its sweetness.  It is always nice to see a couple facing the ups and downs that come with being together, and finding a way through them.  And of course they come through the tsunami closer than ever, as fear and danger make them see that loving each other is the most important thing, and everything else they can work through.  I also liked the description of the tsunami itself – not a monster wave crashing to shore, but a deceptively peaceful looking swell of the water that hides its destructive power.  If the author hasn’t seen one in person, she certainly did her research well!

The cover art by Kris Jacen is for all the novellas in the series, a picture of that monster wave that looks like something to make surfers salivate rather than devastate a shore, but it is pretty.  And very appropriate for the book.

A Mika Review: Rustic Melody (Rustic #1) by Nic Starr

Standard

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Rustic MelodyAdam Chambers has never seen eye-to-eye with his father and is reluctant to take over the family’s property-development company. To clear his head and work out what he wants to do with the rest of his life, Adam leaves his responsibilities in the city and heads out to see the country.

He isn’t much closer to deciding what to do with his life when he arrives at one of Australia’s largest events, the Tamworth Country Music Festival, and meets Joey Callaway.

Since Joey’s father’s tragic death left Joey the family’s debt-ridden pub, Joey has struggled, desperate to turn the business around and give his mum the life she deserves. A break away from the pressures of running the pub is just what he needs, and a hook-up with Adam is the perfect way to forget about his troubles.

The one-night stand might just be an opening act. If Adam and Joey can follow the music in their hearts, perhaps they can heal each other and create a melody that will last a lifetime.

This was my first novel by Nic Starr, and it was okay for me. The writing was okay, and the story was just okay for me. It was kind of flat, and one noted. I did like the characters a lot, but I felt like the story was very predictable. Joey was such a sweet and innocent character. He had a lot of stuff on his shoulders. I did like how he stepped up for his family, and family was a big thing to him. To be 21 years old he was extremely unselfish. Not once did he feel like “whoa is me”. He wasn’t bitter, or resentful for having his life surrounded by his family needs.

I liked Adam as well, but Adam was stuck in fear caused by his father. I get wanting to have your family be proud of him and whereas Joey was unselfish, I felt like Adam doesn’t really know what he wants. I feel like his idea that he comes up with was Joey’s. He brought it up, honestly it feel like Adam is stuck in his life. It’s not a bad thing he’s 23 years old, he has a while to try to figure out his life. I do think they were sweet together, but I didn’t really feel any passion. Again, I just read through, no ups and downs for me. Emotionally it was flat. I would have to see more emotions and passion, or declarations from the characters. I think it was okay for a first in a series.

Cover Art by Book Cover by Design: This was a nice cover. The couple met by Adam playing so I appreciate the music as is.

Blurb: Follow the music in your heart

Adam Chambers has never seen eye-to-eye with his father and is reluctant to take over the family’s property-development company.

EXCERPT

THRASHING MOTORBIKES through dry and dusty paddocks was dirty work. They returned to the hotel, exhausted but happy, hot and filthy.

Dust lined Joey’s nostrils and his mouth was parched despite the beer they’d enjoyed before heading home. Joey wanted nothing more than water—a big drink of the cold stuff and the refreshing spray of the shower. After a brief stop to quench their thirst from the kitchen tap, Joey followed Adam into his room, peeling his clothes off as he went. Adam did the same, tugging the black T-shirt over his head and tossing it to the floor. Adam’s jeans and boxer briefs soon followed.

“I should take you riding more often.” Joey slapped Adam’s naked arse when he bent to pull off his socks. “It’s a good excuse to get you naked in the middle of the afternoon.”

“Hey!” Adam protested and swung around to face him. “Oh!” Adam’s eyes widened as he took in Joey’s nakedness, and Joey felt his dick thicken under Adam’s gaze. Adam cleared his throat. “You don’t need an excuse. Anytime you want me naked, you just need to ask.”

“Promise?” Joey laughed.

“You bet.” Adam’s eyes darkened and he stepped closer to Joey, reached out, and placed his palm over Joey’s heart.

Joey was sure Adam would be able to feel the thump, thump.

Adam’s voice lowered. He leaned forward and spoke softly against Joey’s ear. “I swear you can have me naked any time you want.”
