A MelanieM Review: The New Wolf (Building The Pack #1) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 2.75 stars out of 5

the-new-wolfA dangerous lone wolf is intent on destroying the beginnings of a pack and when Connor is attacked and near death, there is only one thing that can save him. A wolf shifter’s bite.

N.B. Originally published through Extasy Publishing, this edition features the same story with new cover art.

After a hate crime leaves one of them near dead, Veterinarian, Josh Nolan and Cop, Connor Vincent are starting a new life in Black Creek, a remote town on the edge of the Green Mountains Park, Vermont.

Josh is taking over his grandfather’s practice and Connor settles into working in the sheriff’s office covering the area.

When Connor pieces together a whole list of unsolved crimes going back fifty years he puts his life, and that of his partners, in danger.

A dangerous lone wolf is intent on destroying the beginnings of a pack and when Connor is attacked and near death there is only one thing that can save him. A wolf shifter’s bite.

I love RJ Scott, she and her stories are an immediate Must Buy/Must Read for me.  They are normally so well pulled together, cohesive, the characters as well thought out as her plots.  They make sense, emotionally, rationally even when you are  playing around with the supernatural.  Yet that doesn’t occur here in The New Wolf it pains me to say.

I love the plot.  After an attack on couple veterinarian Josh Nolan and police officer Connor Vincent (it was Vincent left hospitalized), both are starting a new life in the country, something that’s taking a major adjustment for Connor, the former city cop.

That’s where the problem  with the narrative is.  You get a hint that the balance of power in the relationship, maybe a D/s  is Josh is the Dom and Connor is a submissive but that doesn’t really go anywhere for long.  There’s too much that the author wants to accomplish in a small amount of length. So plot points start getting dropped in favor of all the many threads Scott wants to see introduced for the books down the road.

Connor is a cop who’s been involved in a near death attack.  He’s having PTSD issues (not really addressed here). Yet they move to the country where, yes, he’s attacked (its in the blurb) and almost killed.  So you would think two attacks would leave him shattered.  That would be at least close to realistic yet its brushed over in a way that astonished me considering its R.J. Scott.  The lack of depth when dealing with his attacks and the ramifications it would have on such a man and his relationships floor me.  Then comes the realization.  Where’s the anger?  There is no believable realistic emotions here.  Its like, ok, I’m a werewolf.  Its so surprising in its utter lack of foundation in this character’s makeup or storyline.  It almost made me look at the cover again to double check the author.

How the local police department handled it.  Much worse.  You can pretty much guess the scenario.  There are huge holes in the plot, a cliffhanger as to a killer on the loose, and a relationship that should be in pieces seems ok.  It just didn’t make a whole lot of sense when looked at as a whole.  Trouble is, I loved the beginning.  It has such promise.  Before it degenerated into a sort of supernatural mess.

So, don’t know what to tell you.  I loved half a book. Or less.  I’ll leave whether or not you want to read it, up to you.

Cover art by Meredith Russell is terrific.  Strong and dramatic. Love it.

A dangerous lone wolf is intent on destroying the beginnings of a pack and when Connor is attacked and near death, there is only one thing that can save him. A wolf shifter’s bite.

After a hate crime leaves one of them near dead, Veterinarian Josh Nolan and Cop Connor Vincent are starting a new life in Black Creek, a remote town on the edge of the Green Mountains range, Vermont. Josh is taking over his grandfather’s practice, and Connor starts a new position with the local sheriff’s office. When Connor becomes curious about unsolved crimes going back fifty years he cant know the kind of secrets he begins to unearth. Or the danger that he puts himself and Josh in.

Excerpt

The smell of coffee woke him and he reached across the bed to check for Josh. When he felt empty sheets, he assumed Josh was the one making coffee. His feet hitting the floor sent a sensation of pain up his legs and he cursed under his breath. He had issued a check with Josh that his body couldn’t cash. Either that or he was getting old. Padding into the kitchen, he blearily rubbed his eyes. It seemed they’d slept through the day and it was after nine in the evening. Josh was wearing sweats that hung from his hipbones and in the soft light from the hall, the dark kitchen was casting weird shadows around his lover. Connor had never seen anything so beautiful as Josh leaning against the counter, waiting for the coffee machine to do its thing.

He yawned widely behind a hand and crossed to Josh, cuddling him from behind. Josh tensed in his arms momentarily in surprise. Evidently, he hadn’t expected Connor out of bed yet. Then he relaxed back into Connor’s hold and finally turned in his arms and pulled Connor closer for a hug.

“How you doing?” he asked gently.

“Aching a bit,” Connor answered truthfully. After five years together, Josh could see through Connor like his mom used to be able to do. According to Josh, he could tell when Connor was lying, joking, or any other ing Connor attempted to pull on him.

“You should probably take some more pain meds.” Josh punctuated that with a kiss and, for a second, they stood close and kissed gentle close-mouthed kisses and simply held each other.

“It’s weird,” Connor started. “My thigh is fine, my chest, fine, but I feel like every muscle in me aches, and my joints, my knees, even my damn elbows. Like I’ve pushed too many weights, or run three marathons back to back.”

Josh tugged back a little and, even without being able to see into Josh’s eyes, Connor knew his other half was probably going to mention the unnecessary sex in the hallway. He wasn’t wrong.

“We shouldn’t have done that this morning,” Josh admonished. “You’re not well enough.”

“I was fine. You weren’t complaining.”

Josh huffed a laugh, then turned back to the coffee. Carrying two mugs into the front room, they sat next to each other on the old wide sofa that had come as part of the house.

“I’ll be complaining tomorrow,” Josh deadpanned. “I’m not saying it wasn’t hot, but jeez, look at this.” He wriggled a little and pushed down his sweats to expose his left hipbone and five perfect crescent dents that were red and sore.

“Shit, babe,” Connor snapped immediately. He placed the coffee down, then touched the marks on Josh’s beautiful unblemished skin. “Did I do that?” He leaned down and pressed a kiss to the marks, then sat back up, not knowing what to say. Should he say sorry? Is that what Josh wanted. Why was it so difficult to read Josh’s expression? Normally he could read Josh as easily as he, himself could be read.

“You just don’t know your own strength,” Josh said without accusation. Then he straddled Connor’s lap and buried his face in Connor’s neck. “I fucking loved it,” Josh mumbled.

Connor held him tight and relished the feel of Josh’s skin against his own. “I love you,” he said gently.

“I love you, too,” Josh murmured. “Don’t ever get attacked in the forest again. Okay?”

Connor moved so that more of Josh’s weight rested on him. The feeling of him was exquisite. Then he cuddled hard and made a mental promise never to go into the trees again.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Jesse’s Christmas by RJ Scott

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

jesses-christmas-by-rj-scottJesse Connor lost everything at Christmas two years ago: his home, his career, and his future husband. But it wasn’t to death—it was to deceit. The man he had planned to propose to on Christmas Eve, the financial guru who managed all their savings and was a Wall Street whiz, was arrested for embezzling millions of dollars. Before he left, though, he stole all of Jesse’s money as well as all his award winning photographs. It’s taken Jesse two years to even try to agree to attempt a comeback, and if it wasn’t for the persistence of his agent, he’d never have taken a photo gig in the wilds of Vermont in December.

There he meets Gabriel McLury, a young man who loves his life, including his mom, his town, his arts & crafts, his job as a teacher, and the kids who make his life complete every single day. At first, Jesse is physically attracted to Gabriel, but still reluctant to try to find enough Christmas spirit to fulfill his photo contract with the small town of Eden Vale. But Gabriel shows him a new perspective, and over the course of the month of Jesse’s photo journal of the town’s Christmas preparations, Jesse’s frozen heart starts to thaw, and an inkling of the Christmas spirit, he once thought lost for good, returns tenfold.

This is a heartwarming story—romantic, sweet, and comforting with endearing characters and the perfect Christmas story setting. Being witness to Jesse’s evolving Christmas spirit will put a smile on the face of everyone, including Ebenezer himself. A standalone, this book can be read any time of the year, but anyone with a holiday wish list should be sure to add it at the top.

Cover art by Meredith Russell depicts two young men against a brown-tinted background. To be honest, they may look like the characters, but the story itself is all about color, especially the cerulean blue of Gabriel’s eyes, so it’s not a cover that truly reflects the goodness within the pages.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Snow in Montana (Montana #4) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

snow-in-montanaThe fourth installment in the Montana series, it’s now Sheriff Ryan Carter’s turn to find love, and not just the one-night-stand kind of love he’s used to. When he meets Jordan Darby, a child star now known as the King of Christmas for all the holiday made-for-TV movies he’s starred in, something stirs in Ryan’s heart, even before he realizes Jordan is gay.

Closeted for years, Jordan fears coming out, not just because it will lose him jobs as a romantic lead, but also because it may upend the fledgling production company he and his twin have started. This first year they are filming their Christmas romance in Montana and have sold it to a family network so the fear is real. His coming out right now could cause that network to negate their contract, and he and his brother could lose all the money they’ve invested from both their own savings and from their deceased actor father’s estate.

But RJ Scott delivers a very feasible story to create a world in which Jordan, only a Hollywood B-list actor, can leak the story slowly and move on with his life. Without flaunting it, he manages to find a way to make a romance with Ryan work, even after he returns to LA to finalize the film.

What makes this story different is that the mystery, which surfaced in the first book involving Adam and Justin, remains strong and is interwoven throughout this book. So much so, in fact, that at times I felt that it detracted from the developing romance between Ryan and Jordan. Instead of this story being 80% Jordan and Ryan, 20% other series’ characters, it felt like at least 50-50, and if anything, it may have even been tipped the opposite way. I guess that’s my way of saying that I would have liked more of Ryan and Jordan, more conflict, more slow burn, more loving, and more romance, so I was ultimately disappointed in this book. I’m ready to move on from the mystery, and I’m at the point where Adam is more annoying than anything, and Justin comes across as a drama queen. I hope the end of the series is near and that future books don’t focus so much on either of the former books’ characters or else just focus on them and be done with it.

So overall? Jordan and Ryan—great couple, beautiful setting, sweet romance; and the ongoing mystery—complex, annoying, ready to draw to a close. If that’s something you’d like, this would be a great series to pick up. I would not recommend this book as a standalone.

Don’t miss Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Word’s Review here by Barb the Zany Old Lady! Highly Recommended!

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Kyle (Legacy Ranch #1) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

kyle-by-rj-scottTwo men destroyed by the past learn to live—and love—again.

Kyle Braden has nowhere else to go. With no money and no prospects, he turns to the only man who promises him help. Jack Campbell-Hayes wants to show Kyle that he can be more than he ever thought.

Kyle begins to see how far he’s come from being the scarred man who shut everyone out, when the first person through the doors of Legacy Ranch is Jason; a young man with nightmares that follow him when he’s awake.

Lost in the system and with three years on the streets marking every inch of his body, Jason Smith is scared. His life is an evil mess of hate and despair, and even the offer of a fresh start and a clean bed isn’t enough for him feel safe. Until Kyle comes into his life and shows him that it’s okay not to be in control.

For these broken men, Legacy Ranch offers more than a place to live and work.

It offers hope.

A new story set in the world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch, Texas.

Kyle is so broken from the time he spent in a sexually and physically abusive situation with rancher Hank Castille that he finds it hard to accept that all Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes want is to see him get a fresh start. They don’t want to have sex with him or abuse him in any way, and yet Kyle’s behavior is somewhat like the dog that bites its master when it’s cornered. And it takes Kyle quite a lengthy time in this story to finally realize that he might be able to help himself and accept that these men, along with their brother-in-law, Steve Murray, only want to see him succeed.

But the story isn’t all about Kyle. It’s also about Jason, a young man caught in a downward spiral when his depression gets out of control at the same time as he’s lost all other control in his life. Fortunately, Steve, who runs a teen shelter, sees something positive in Jason and recommends him to Jack as the first resident for their new venture: Legacy Farm.

Legacy Farm is where they’ve assigned Kyle as manager of the small ranch that will provide a home for eligible troubled young men and women. They learn to be responsible for their own horse—one rescued from an abusive situation. It’s actually ideal for Kyle, who has found that touching or talking to his horse is equally as satisfying as riding out on the range with it, so he is one of the most capable persons for passing on that passion to others. When Jason joins him to work on the construction of the new building, Kyle makes it his mission to introduce him to the joys of working with horses as well.

At first, Jason isn’t so sure about that. After all, he has a huge fear of the beasts with the large teeth, but I totally enjoyed all the interactions between Jason, Kyle, and Jason’s assigned horse, Mistry. There was humor and hope in equal measures, and when Jason finally tapped into the pleasure of working with the great beasts, he understood the joy of horse therapy and the peace and solitude he could achieve through riding—with or without Kyle at his side.

This is a beautiful love story, as these two very emotionally damaged young men recover from both the physical and psychological abuse they’ve suffered. Their recovery is not always at the same pace, but it happens. And the fact that the author allowed them to start to heal before they jumped into bed with each other added to my reading pleasure. I love a slow burn buildup in a romance novel!

And, I absolutely loved the way RJ Scott wove the whole Campbell-Hayes clan into this starter story, engaging me with the full cast of characters and where they are in their lives today. Going to a cookout and taking me for a walk down memory lane so I could see people I haven’t seen in years was an unexpected surprise. The love between Jack and Riley, so clearly in evidence by the way they look at each other, speak to each other, and touch tenderly even while doing everyday tasks is still alive and strong. This book and its cast of characters was a fantastic bridge from the Texas series to this new one!

I can’t wait to read more, and I highly recommend it to all who’ve loved the Texas series as well as to those who simply love a hurt-comfort romance. Make no mistake—this is not a sex-filled romp on the range—it’s a beautiful, emotionally compelling love story.  Kudos, Ms. Scott!

Cover art by Meredith Russell is as wonderful as the story.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: A Cowboy’s Home (Montana #3) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 3 stars out of  5

a-cowboys-home-by-rj-scottOne burned and broken man finds his way home. Can he find peace in the arms of a man easy to love?

Justin made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, battling domestic terrorism, never the man he really was, using hate to avenge the death of his best friend. The friend he’d killed.

What he doesn’t count on is getting shot, and if he’s going to die he wants it to be on Crooked Tree soil. Home.

Sam is as much a part of Crooked Tree as any of the families, and the offer to buy into the ranch is a dream come true. But falling for a hidden, secretive, injured man isn’t the way to keep his head in the game.
I’m thrilled that I was given the opportunity to read book three in this series for review. I loved book two so much I went back and read book one so I was more than ready for book three. I had high hopes that this would be even better than book two, which was full of action, danger, and intrigue. And though this book had action, most of it was in the telling of past events, and the potential intrigue and danger of Justin’s return home after a twelve-year absence was easily resolved and not suspenseful at all.

On the down side, there was quite a bit of time devoted to Justin’s inability to make up his mind about what he would do next, where he wanted to live, what he could safely share with others, and how unfit he was to share his life with another man, particularly Ben. And though they grew close while Justin was injured, once he left and later returned, he avoided Ben for reasons that were shaky at best, boring at worst.

I did have to suspend disbelief to get past how the mystery was cleared up, and I was so done with Ethan and Adam and their behaviors long before the big reveal. And that’s upsetting because I really like both men in book two. They were so strong and together, but in this one, Adam walked around like a zombie with Ethan as his protective mama. Justin’s father, Marcus, was totally cluelessness and had his head so far in the clouds (or in his own you know what!) that I could barely tolerate him. I just found that there was way too much time spent worrying and doubting and spinning in circles without accomplishing anything at all for much too much of the story.

So, sadly, this wasn’t on a par with the others, and certainly not as good as book two. I liked it, mostly because I was already invested in this group of people, but I really can’t see giving this one more than three stars.

Cover art by Meredith Russell depicts both good-looking MCs against an outdoors Montana background. The soft colors and artwork tie it to the others in the series.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: The Rancher’s Son (Montana #2) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

The Rancher's Son by RJ ScottA man without memories, and the cop who never gave up hope.

When he wakes up in hospital, the victim of a brutal beating, John Doe, has no memories of who he is or who hurt him. The cops can find nothing to identify him and he can’t remember anything to help… except the name Ethan and one recurring place from his dreams. Three words, and they’re not much, but it’s a start. Crooked Tree Ranch.

Cop, Ethan Allens has never stopped searching for his brother and his brother’s best friend who vanished. When a report lands on Ethan’s desk that may give new leads he jumps at the chance to follow them up. The man he finds isn’t his brother, but it’s someone who could maybe help him discover what happened ten years ago.

What neither man can know is that facing the very real demons of the past could very well destroy any kind of future they may think they have together.

This was an emotional drama with a beautiful romance that surpassed the erosions of time apart.  When Ethan got a lead on his missing brother, the Montana cop rushed to Chicago to identify the John Doe who had suffered such a bad beating that his memory failed. The only two words that seemed to mean anything were Ethan and Crooked Tree.  Ethan’s family owned Crooked Tree Ranch, so he had put in the family names and the ranch name as a flag for any missing persons throughout the US.  After waiting twelve years to hear anything, his hopes are dashed when he realizes the young man isn’t his younger brother, Justin.  But after a closer inspection of the bruised and swollen face, he realizes the man is Adam, Justin’s best friend, and Ethan’s one true love.

Last seen when they were nearly sixteen and Ethan was nearing eighteen, the young men disappeared without a trace.  It quickly becomes evident that being in Ethan’s presence is helping Adam heal in more ways than one.  Their feelings for each other have never been forgotten and are flaring strong again, despite the difficulty Ethan faces in trying to keep from pushing Adam and Adam’s difficulty in trying to keep from hurting Ethan when he remembers snatches of what might have happened to Justin.

Let’s just say that it’s a very well-developed story line, complete with danger and intrigue, and heavy on the romance, but not on the sex.  It’s the perfect combo, and I loved it so much I went right out and picked up book one and am hoping that after I devour that one, I can get book three.  I’m hooked on this series, and most definitely enjoyed the ending to this story though it isn’t a complete resolution to the mystery.  It did intrigue me enough to salivate over the need to get into book three quickly. Thankfully, the time frame between releases was short and it’s already out.

I highly recommend this one to all who love MM romance, cowboys, cops, mysterious amnesia victims, and of course, an RJ Scott story.

The cover by Meredith Russell depicts both MCs set against a scenic Montana background. Just right for this story.
