Review: Review: Shifting of the Wild (Shifter Lords Book 7) by S.E. Babin

Rating: 4.75⭐️

“In-hiding hedgewitch florist by day. Powerful demigoddess by blood. Shapeshifting immortal by accident.”- book 1 hook

Well, it’s taken seven books to get here but Shifting of the Wild is the story I’ve been waiting for and so, so satisfying.

In all my reviews I’ve made it clear that the character of Caelan has been one I consider a being I’m absolutely not a fan of, especially in the toxic relationship he’s had with Evie. He’s been the epitome of a controlling, dangerous, narcissistic personality who’s only interested in power and dominance.

And the sad, damaging nature of this relationship has been one of the worst aspects of the series. Domestic violence and abuse are front and center here. Cheating and humiliation as well in the previous story.

So this book is where Evie begins with her healing, her understanding of her past relationships , of Caelan, their abusive dynamic , and slowly starting to change and move happily forward.

Shes in Rowan’s territory after the last battles and ordeals suffered in the previous story. The damage incurred is devastating. Physically and emotionally.  She’s needed space and time to heal and recover.

And yes, Rowan has been a great favorite of mine. What a great and well balanced character, including his own secrets and powers.

This narrative has multiple layers, including a new huge threat to the world from unknown sources. And Cernunnos and Moira are setting up a new plot and role for Moira with her new powers.

I just love this story, and really want the trajectory of Evie’s new relationship to continue. Fantastic work and series.

Highly recommended!

So well written and beautifully executed.

When Mother Earth comes calling, you’d better answer the door…

Evie has asked for sanctuary with Rowan, and he’s accepted, allowing her into his territory to lick her wounds and heal. Things are good for a while, until strange occurrences start happening when Rowan and Evie are together.

With similar magic, Evie feels like she’s found a kindred soul in the Shifter Lord, but other forces are about to shatter her rest and respite time and plunge them both into a type of danger they’ve never experienced before.

Someone is poisoning Rowan’s land and attempting to wrest his territory away from him. This time, the Lord isn’t powerful enough to win. But the enemy never counted on the fae heir and Floromancer’s visit, and one thing Evie is very good at is fighting for her friends.

Complications arise when Caelan figures out where she is and attempts to bring her home. But Evie never abandons a friend, and certainly not for a man who wouldn’t fight for her when she needed him to. Between fighting Caelan and fighting for Rowan, Evie is mentally and physically exhausted, something the enemy jumps on.

When the chips are down and the future looks grim, Evie will have to muster all her strength and power to fight back for Rowan, for herself, and to save Mother Earth from total annihilation.

Even if she loses herself in the process.

Review:  Bubble Gum and Blackmail (Cadie Sharp #1) by S. E. Babin

Rating: 4.5⭐️

Turns out I’m a magpie reader. Find an author that I like and I dive right into their catalog of books and series.

That’s both a blessing and a curse for certain prolific writers like S.E. Babin, in the middle of writing a terrific urban fantasy thriller. She’s got a couple of series that haven’t seen new releases in a while, fabulous ones. Something I should probably check when picking up a book from her.

But Bubble Gum and Blackmail (Cadie Sharp #1 by S. E. Babin was just too shiny! I absolutely love the premise of a military black op, forced into retirement, who turns candy maker in a small town in Tennessee.

She’s the antithesis of fitting in, with her pink hair, pink delivery van, and attitude that’s just a bit more than a mere candy shop owner. Especially when a favorite elderly customer’s son is murdered and she’s asked for help.

The characters are tightly crafted, the town’s spot on for its location, all the residents and the community interactions feel real for that small town dynamic.

Even that Sheriff with his suspicions, isn’t a one dimensional character. There’s layers to him, some funny.

It’s a short novel, which had me crying. Because it ended on a surprise note. Which had me checking out the release date. 2021. And no mention of future stories as yet.

So are you a magpie reader like me? Cause this is so so shiny! I’m not sorry I collected it. Even if there’s nothing more.

But if not maybe find something else to read that will bring closure to the characters and check on this every now and again.

Love that cover.

Review: Norse Code (Vikings of Virginia #1) by S.E.Babin

Rating: 4.5⭐️

Babin is taking Norse mythology and weaving it into a series about a goddess’s journey through a long term marriage of domesticated abuse, neglect, and emotional abandonment to one of recovery, healing and acceptance.

It’s a terrific take on Odin, Freya and exactly how the women were perceived and treated in Asgard by Odin and those loyal to him.

It begins with Freya, after thousands of years of neglect and abuse, finally done with Odin’s philandering, humiliation of her and her status as the Queen. She’s leaving.

This is extremely current topic and it’s Babin’s treatment of such an emotionally sensitive subject that’s so successful. With Freya as the main character leading the way to creating change for herself and her people, the story is one of powerful stories and compelling elements.

There’s no immediate salve for the pain, anger or damage that Freya has experienced for centuries. It’s emotional trauma she needs to overcome and work through herself.

And the life she’s trying to build comes with additional challenges, huge demands on her new life and that includes mystery and murder.

With a settlement in Virginia, Loki by her side and host of intriguing characters surrounding her, Freya’s emotional new journey begins with a tremendous amount of suspense and drama.

I didn’t put it down until after it was finished.

A note to consider, I’ve seen other posts about this series where people have said that it’s been years since the last update. Four to be exact. Babin is a prolific author and she’s currently writing a series I’m reading right now.

Hopefully she’ll return to this universe soon and publish a finale for Freya and crew.

Freya is over Odin’s shenanigans. After finding yet another blond in her bedchambers, she makes a choice that shakes the foundation of her entire pantheon.

Literally.

‘Cuz she blows up the palace.

When she holds a meeting in the town square and offers safe haven to Asgardians who wish to defect, Freya creates a retirement community in the countryside of Virginia and becomes the owner of a brand new pub. Away from the annoying antics of her husband, Freya is content for the first time she can remember. Of course, this is when disaster strikes.

Happy serving drinks to the townsfolk, Freya is completely unprepared for the first true crime to hit her people in centuries. Something magical and unwelcome has sought haven in her new town and is preying on her people. Loki thinks it’s Ragnarok. Odin thinks it’s karma.

Freya just thinks it’s a crock.

But she’s the only one who’s up to the challenge of finding the threat and eliminating it before her new settlement is over before it’s truly begun.

Review: Shift of Rule (Shifter Lords Book 6) by S.E. Babin

Rating: 4.75⭐️

Babin really decided to triple down on the narrative twists and shocks in the series here and it’s wonderful.  The author takes her character of Evie into deeper development in about every aspect of her life, pulling her close friends along with her.

Her complicated relationship dynamics with her father and mother, both gods in their own rights, are a huge part of the story. Not surprisingly.  But with the fae and the devious nature of his relationship with his daughter, her own growth is perhaps the biggest challenge and factor here.

Among Babin’s many plot lines and characters effectively adding obstacles to Evie’s path, the main character is Caelan, Lord of the Shifters and perhaps my least favorite character. He’s everything I dislike in a MC, and explanations withstanding, he remains one among many better characters.

This book hasn’t changed my opinion on this character.

The surprising twists and new developments, including bringing in more mythology, just heightened the tension and depth of excitement that Babin is already building for Evie’s character and her growing found family.

I’m so excited for the next book and chapter in Evie’s life. The hints given here are thrilling. Especially if Babin continues on with some old better avenues for romance for Evie.

Highly recommended!

So well written and beautifully executed.

Furious and heartbroken, Evie throws herself into training with her father to finally claim the fae crown and forget the shifter who shattered her heart.

Shifter Lords

Review: Shifting Resolve (Shifter Lords Book 5) by S.E. Babin

Rating: 4.5⭐️

Shifting Resolve basically undoes all the forward movement of the preceding novel for the characters in terms of their relationships.

And this was to be expected given the twisted plots and various natures of the characters involved with the main character of Evie Quinn.

With her growing powers exposed, during the climatic events with the Life Tree, multiple threats and challenges are leveled against her. And her un-acknowledged partner, lord of shifters, Caelan as well.

There’s so many complex storylines woven into the narrative to keep track of. Various Lords with their own agendas, Evie’s father and mother whose hidden secrets and paths for Evie are also unknown.

Those secrets the reader has been told and know they are explosive in their own ways, are elements that have storylines that haven’t been factored in yet. It’s labyrinthine structure that makes this series so gripping and compelling.

That’s the case here where stress and anxiety are the common theme, secrets are key, and everyone is trying to control Evie and claim a part of her . When she doesn’t want to be claimed or controlled.

And everyone around her has an hidden or not so secret agenda.

It’s high action, high suspense, high mystery and it ends in a cliffhanger of sorts. But one that the reader honestly will expecting. Because we saw it coming.

I love the characters and this very layered, complex story. And I’m rooting for Evie and her small group of friends.

Highly recommended and I can’t wait for the next one in this series.

So well written and beautifully executed.

Review:  Shifting Winds (Shifter Lords #4) by S.E. Babin

Rating: 4.75⭐️

This was an excellent read. The fourth book in what I believe is a seven book series, Babin packs so many important series elements and shocking moments into this book, jamming a multitude of various character’s storylines, relationship dynamics, and unexpected events together to make this story a memorable, explosive dramatic and extremely compelling book.

Evie and Caelin’s relationship is one that still stands out as one of powerfully compelling fragility.  Each of them has their own unique powers as well as responsibilities and deeply rooted secrets that make any type of permanent connection between them almost untenable. Never more is this made clear than here as events escalate.

But Evie’s friends are ongoing challenges and their own personal relationship issues. Ones that her choices are making an impact.

It’s one thing after another. One dramatic moment that arises when you least expect it.  And the author folds every single piece of information and plot effortlessly into the whole, using mythology and fantasy and the richness of the location to bring the characters and wildness of this story to life.

That ending was so satisfying and intense. Which makes me want more immediately!

There’s a bit of a mystery left unanswered that will be carried over to the next book.  I can wait for it to be released.

Highly recommended. Grab them up and read in the order they were written.

This is a series that I find absolutely amazing. A winner!

Everything’s a mess. The gods won’t stay out of her business. And Evie? All she wants is a little peace or drowning by bottomless margaritas.

Evie should be basking in the afterglow after her romp with the Shifter Lord. Instead, she’s dodging his increasingly aggressive courtship rituals like a runaway bride carrying dynamite. Not because she doesn’t care about him, but because she’s keeping big secrets.

Cernunnos has decided to retire. On the surface, totally fine. Except … Daddy Dearest wants to hand Evie the keys to the fae kingdom, and he’s been dropping in with divine homework and cryptic warnings about the future.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Caelan is hinting at forever, the Council is sniffing around, searching for answers about Donovan’s untimely demise, and Cliona keeps dropping by, hinting she wants a mother-daughter relationship, while conveniently forgetting she tried to kill Evie a few months ago.

The cherry on top? After a split-second decision to swallow the World Tree seed to keep it out of Chimera hands, Evie is now a bridge to other worlds—a power she has no idea how to use, but one that everyone covets, leaving her to ask the most important question of all…

Who can she trust?

And who wants to take her out for good?

Review: Power Shift (Shifter Lords Book 3) by S.E. Babin

Rating: 4.5⭐️

The Shifter Lords series by S.E. Babin just keeps getting better with each new book she releases. In the perfectly named Power Shift, multiple characters come to new heights of development and impact in the overall series arc.

Some have huge moments of personal magical growth and character progression. Others have revelatory scenes that shake up the backgrounds and future of main characters here. And others simply get their long awaited comeuppance.

It’s all done through a narrative that is written with humor, dramatic scenes and wonderful threads of mystery and mythology.

I started it and didn’t stop until I finished it, so invested in the characters and events as they rapidly unfolded. Suspense, magical creatures, endearing poisonous fauna and a found family of supernatural beings that I just adore.

This is a series that I highly recommend and found absolutely amazing. A winner!

Snark. Sass. Sabotage.

Evie Quinn is tired.
Of magical politics. Of cursed bouquets.
Of hot Shifter Lords who kiss her like a promise and then send her potential love interest to another state.

All she wants is to run her flower shop in peace, maybe master the whole “accidentally-a-Chimera” thing, and avoid becoming a pawn in the games of gods and Lords.

But when has Evie ever gotten what she wanted?

When Finn arrives with a warning about a new threat, and her mother starts sniffing around for a lost possession she thinks Evie has stolen from her, the Floromancer feels the walls closing in on her.

Add in some unfortunate magical misfires, Caelan’s insistence on a quickie wedding she never agreed to, and the presence of a god too close to figuring out exactly what she is, and Evie has her hands full with no solutions in sight.

When secrets unravel and ancient enemies rise, Evie will have to choose: play nice to survive … or become the storm they never saw coming.

Review:  Shift of Morals (Shifter Lords Book 2) by S.E. Babin

Rating: 4.5⭐️

Shift of Morals was another good story, fast paced and action packed. There are new terrific characters, added fascinating story threads, and further exploration of this character’s back history and traumatic experiences that led to this situation and her evolving physical status, whatever it may be.

I liked Shift of Morals better than Shift of Heart. Evie is growing more multi dimensional and relatable as she faces ever greater challenges and personal dangers. Especially when her worst enemy comes to town.

Highlights are scenes that include Seymour, the sentient venomous flycatcher plant with major personality, and more fantastic magical powerful elements, especially those of plants where they exhibit the ability to move and think for themselves. Toxic plants are everything!

I’m still not sold on shifter lord, Caelan. He’s still a bit problematic, especially when the author has such other strong good male characters available. Caelan is still being reactive, obsessed, secretive, non communicative, violent. And a bit dimwitted at the end.

Sigh. Why, why do authors love to write these main characters so much?SMH.

Still, so terrific writing and elements here. Heading forward!

Check it out! Especially if urban fantasy or paranormal romance is your thing.

What do you get when you mix one hot shifter, one angry god, and an absolutely zero chance of keeping things low-key?

A whole bunch of trouble, that’s what.

Life was so much simpler when Evie’s problems consisted of picking the perfect peony. Now she’s got the gods on her tail and shifters trying to sniff out her secrets.

Then there’s the smoking hot Shifter Lord who has never once thrown a party, hiring her for all kinds of pack events and doing his best to convince her to trust him. But he has an agenda of his own, and Evie is far too smart to let her guard down.

On top of that, there’s a new god in town, one who’s way too good at identifying bloodlines and scenting out lies. She’ll have to dig deep and muster up some of her rusty acting skills to escape his notice, while trying to keep her identity hidden from the rest of the world so intent on finding her.

And if that wasn’t enough, someone is trying to kill her, and they’re getting close to succeeding.

Surviving will require placing her trust in the unlikeliest of allies and deciding just how long she can keep pretending she’s only a demure little florist who has an unfortunate black thumb for drama.

Evie is still a florist. Still a fraud. And still trying to pretend she’s not falling in love.

Review:  Shift of Heart (Shifter Lords Book 1) by S.E. Babin

Rating: 4.25⭐️

S.E. Babin is an author I’ve read before with mixed feelings. Some series I’ve really connected with and others not so much.

Shift of Heart, the first in Babin’s Shifter Lords paranormal romance series, is one I’m excited about and currently enjoying.

The description of this book drew me in but, now headed to the next book in the series, I feel that it’s a bit misleading. And needs clarification to begin with on an element that should come with trigger warnings.

Here’s the lead in.

“In-hiding hedgewitch florist by day. Powerful demigoddess by blood. Shapeshifting immortal by accident.”

That last bit? No accident but a horrifying assault, vividly captured, and for some, as it’s a reoccurring part of the story and a traumatic experience for the character, a element I think should have a trigger warning.  Assault and potentially death. FYI.

Onto the other aspects of Shift of Heart.  The world building is one that’s being assembled as part of the process of storytelling. So we don’t know how humans and nonhumans cohabitate separately as well as they do. Especially as humans aren’t supposed to know about the paranormal beings. And readers just get an understanding of otherworldly politics and governance as events happen.

It’s a characters that make the story. Especially the found family that exists around the main character of Evie Quinn, a Flouromage who runs a flower shop with her best friends, a vampire, a banshee, and a dryad. With a main goal of being successful while trying to stay hidden from the horrors she’s fled from. As well as her Mother.

The best friends, are beautifully crafted. Each one has a unique personality as well as fascinating otherworldly qualities due to their species and history. And they’re all very close to Evie. They know her secrets, her past.

For me they are fantastic and support the story even when I feel that the author has Evie being self destructive and close to a TSTL character.

Most of that is due to her involvement and interactions with the Alpha of all Shifters in her area.  Toxic relationship is how most people would describe it.

Although it’s a staple of some romance tropes. Outlooks are changing.

The Alpha is all “everything/everyone is mine” rawr! If I don’t like it or get it. Let’s destroy it.  So of course, things around Evie are destroyed.

He fixes it. She tries to or pays for it. Pattern says that it continues.

To be fair. Caelan, the Alpha, recognizes that there is a problem with his approach. And her friends and a mentor are the ones who will tell Evie that she’s jeopardizing herself and them in this situation.

But it’s that relationship and story so it’s going to continue on this path. If you find it as frustrating as I did be warned.

What is worth continuing forward is the multiple mysteries, the mythology and the interwoven relationships between the gods, current events and the characters. That’s intriguing and suspenseful.

And it’s got me fully engaged in the series and process, and this group of characters.

Check it out! Especially if urban fantasy or paranormal romance is your thing.

Book 1 of 7: Shifter Lords

Blurb

In-hiding hedgewitch florist by day. Powerful demigoddess by blood. Shapeshifting immortal by accident.

After a terrible divorce left her blindsided, all Evie Quinn wants is a relaxing girls’ trip to Scotland, not a fight for her life with a Chimera shifter—an ancient, secretive enemy with the power to shapeshift into anything with a pulse.

Surviving the attack is a plus, but her goddess mother drops a bomb on her: Living will change everything.

And…it does.

Now she’s hiding out in a small town running a popular flower shop, doing her best to resist the urge to gnaw on raw meat every chance she gets, and badly pretending she’s the same ol’ lovable hedgewitch she always was.

Except, spoiler alert: She’s not.

When a foraging trip reveals a dying shifter in the woods, Evie breaks all the rules to heal him and vanishes before he wakes up. Cue immediate panic when that dangerously attractive shifter walks into her shop a few weeks later, and she finds out he’s the Alpha of every single shifter in the state.

Eep.

Fortunately, he’s only looking for a florist, not Evie. Not yet. But divine magic brews in the skies, and the wild gods are on the prowl, searching for the source of a long forgotten ancient magic they sense stirring once again.

As Evie’s secrets claw their way to the surface, she realizes she may have to team up with the one man who can save her life.

If he doesn’t destroy it first.

For fans of dangerous supernatural tension, enemies-to-lovers romance, and reluctant heroines, Shift of Heart is the beginning of a dangerously addictive and magical new series.
