Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have BA Tortuga back again talking about all things Texan, writing, and new stories, in this case Soft Place To Fall. Welcome, BA.

My Daddy Hates It Here 😉

Hey y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of all things western.

I have to tell y’all a story. As y’all may know, I’m a Texan and when I announced to my daddy I was moving to New Mexico, he was pissed.

You see, Daddy really likes all of his little girls near, thank you.

Regardless, here I moved, and when Daddy saw it, he hated it.

Now, I live in between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, so I live surrounded by high desert and mountains. It’s stunning here. The light, the sun, the colors…I can rhapsodize.

All my daddy sees is dirt.

*grins* That’s how it goes with my newest book – Stetson in a New Mexican, Curtis is a Texan. Stetson is married to the land, Curtis is married to rodeo.

Damn y’all.

When Stetson has to call Curtis for a favor years after they break up? Whoa.

Much love, y’all,

BA

Soft Place to Fall Official Blurb:

Stetson Major and Curtis Traynor are about as opposite as two cowboys can get. Stetson is a rancher, tied to the land he loves in Taos, New Mexico, while Curtis is a rodeo cowboy whose wanderlust never could be tamed.

But now Stetson’s momma is dying of Alzheimer’s, and she can’t remember that Curtis hasn’t been Stetson’s boyfriend for a long time. Curtis’s absence makes her cry, so Stetson swallows his pride and calls his ex-lover.

To Curtis, Stetson is the one who got away, the love of his life. And Momma is his friend, so he’s happy to help out. Yet returning to the ranch stirs up all sorts of feelings that, while buried, never really went away. Still, the rodeo nationals are coming up, and Curtis can’t stay… even if he’s starting to want to, especially to support Stetson when he needs it most.

Stetson and Curtis want to find a place where they both fit, to be there to catch each other when they fall. But family, money problems, and the call of the rodeo circuit might end their second-chance romance before it even gets started.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with Jodi Payne and BA Tortuga

BA:

With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain?  To get away?  To move past?  To wide our knowledge?  Why do you write?

I write because it’s what I do. The political climate right now is more than I can bear, and the best way I can make things better is to give my boys and girls their happy endings and to live my happy ending now.

What’s next for you as a writer?

Well…

*bounces*

Y’all, the next in the Leaning N series is coming in March from Dreamspinner’s Dreamspun line, AND Soft Place to Fall is releasing in April! Both are about former lovers coming together — Whiskey to Wine is a fun romp in the snow with a snowboarder and a sculptor at the Leaning N Ranch, and Soft Place is…Oh, y’all. These boys are two balls of hurt in Stetsons needing a home.

JODI:

If you write contemporary romance, is there such a thing as making a main character too “real”? Do you think you can bring too many faults into a character that eventually it becomes too flawed to become a love interest?

I walk this line with a lot of my MCs. They’re not always a hundred percent loveable when a story starts. Sometimes they’re selfish or arrogant, sometimes they’re greedy or entitled, occasionally they take advantage of the man that eventually becomes the love of their lives. But growth is what it’s about. Redemption. Learning lessons. Changing for the better to win and keep the man they love. I think “real” is important, and not every man is a sweep you off your feet perfect hero. Even heroes can (and should IMHO) have flaws. Real love makes you want to be a better person.

What’s next for you as a writer?

I have a m/m/m menage coming out this May with Dreamspinner Press called Stable Hill. It’s my first m/m/m and I’m really excited about it. It’s about Oscar, a widower and father of three who loses his elderly dad and inherits a farm called Stable Hill. He hires Jeffrey as his realtor to sell the house, and Russ, the barn manager, doesn’t know how he feels about the old family farm being sold. All three men have a stake in the farm, and soon have one in each other as well.

Syncopation
A Collaborations Novel

Colt Boudreaux was raised in the Louisiana bayou and is gifted with a talent steeped in the rich and soulful New Orleans blues tradition. He makes a living as a session musician, playing guitar for anyone who needs him. When his manager sends him to New York, the Cajun is as beguiled as he is baffled by the energy of the city—and just as charmed by Kyle Alexander.

Kyle is a successful classically trained ballet dancer, choreographer, and native New Yorker whose unbridled talent defies convention, and whose rebel spirit favors ink, shuns the orchestra, and is every bit as unique as Kyle himself.

They find a connection right away that inspires rhythm and movement, mood and music, both in and out of the bedroom. It’s not long before they’re as obsessed with each other as they are with their art, and they decide to work together on an improvisational piece for Kyle’s upcoming solo exhibition.

But Kyle is focused, and Colt is free-spirited. Colt’s work ebbs and flows with inspiration, and Kyle’s is rehearsed. Kyle is social and sophisticated, and Colt… isn’t. When their talents weave together, it’s magical, but will their differences destroy it all?

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have BA Tortuga here talking about her  Christmas prep and her new story, Stetsons and Stakeouts. Welcome, BA.

Hey y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of all things Christmas!

Okay, so I’m supposed to be all promotion-girl, but y’all.

Christmas!

I know, bad author.

Sue me.

*grins*

So, I’m the woman with the menagerie on the front porch (light up basset, yorkie, narwhal, bull rider, yeti, shark, owl, rhino…), Christmas music blaring, dogs running in and out. It’s hell being my neighbor.

EXCEPT!

I cook.

So far I’ve delivered pecan pie, dinner rolls, glazed pecans, and chocolate cherry snowballs.

I’ve received baklava (homemade phyllo, y’all!), meat pies, hummus, and Swiss chocolate.

Tomorrow I’m making chili and cornbread to take next door on one side and ginger cookies for the couple on the other side.

I wish y’all a happy holiday season and many goodies.

Much love, y’all,

BA

Stetsons and Stakeouts Official Blurb:

Gianni Cesare is a DEA agent and rancher—who also happens to be a millionaire heir to an Italian count. Running a multiagency sting out of his East Texas ranch means he needs a new foreman… preferably someone a little wet behind the ears who won’t ask too many questions.

Gianni’s Aunt Jerilyn hires Bonner Fannin, a roughstock rider with zero ranch experience and a sister who’s pregnant with a violent biker’s twins. If that’s not bad enough, Bonner is pretending he and his sister are married to protect her and to help get him the job.

Gianni didn’t think Bonner was the marrying type during their torrid beach affair years ago, but he’s not sure if he has time to explore that thought now, as overrun as his ranch is with drug cartels, macho government agents, and local cops. Looks like Bonner and Gianni are both in over their heads, and they may have to band together during this adventure to swim rather than sink.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with Jodi Payne and B.A. Tortuga

  • What traits do you find the most interesting in someone? Do you write them into your characters?

Jodi:

I think some of those interesting traits are exactly what we’re exploring in Heart of a Redneck. How family and upbringing shape you into who you are and inform your values. Which traditions you hold onto and which you reject, and the things you’re willing to compromise or even give up for someone else. The ways things like geography and privilege influence your opinions and your perspective.

Gordon’s family wasn’t tight, his father wasn’t present or terribly motivated, and that’s made Gordon feel like he has something to prove. He’s an overachiever, he’s confident, he thinks fast and has high expectations, and that’s built a successful and profitable restaurant. But he left home easily, he’s never had family support and he doesn’t really know to do anything but work 24/7.

BA:

I love clever people, funny people, and I’m totally addicted to honesty. Trust me, my wife is witty and wonderful.

I think the honest is what resonates with Colby. He is who he is, full stop. He loves working, babies, dogs, the mountains, and Gordon. Simple. Strong. Straightforward.

*grins*

Blurb – Heart of a Redneck

Colby McBride is a blue-collar cowboy trying to make ends meet laying tile in Colorado. A loner by choice, Colby works hard with his hands and finds his peace camping in the mountains outside Boulder. Gordon James is a white-collar restaurateur who owns not one, but two successful establishments in downtown Boulder. He’s a sophisticated urbanite who is devoted to his work and is accustomed to getting what he wants.

The men are friends, but sparks fly when Colby falls in love and decides to show Gordon how much fun a good old boy can be. They’re just beginning to explore their relationship when Gordon’s sister’s suicide leaves him with custody of his five-year-old niece.

Colby comes from a huge family and is eager to help with the girl and to prove his worth to Gordon. But neither of them is ready for the tremendous changes to their already busy lives, or for how this new relationship with Olivia challenges them, complicating the way they interact with each other.

They say opposites attract, but can these two very different men work together to join their disparate lives and form a strong, if highly unlikely, family?

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have B.A. Tortuga here on tour for her most recent release Long Black Cadillac.  Welcome, B.A.

Hey y’all. I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of all things bitey.

I’m so stoked because I’ve added almost 15,000 words to my vampire novel, Long Black Cadillac and it’s releasing from Dreamspinner Press. It’s had some polish, some more background, and now Clay, Vince, Gryph, and Remy are back! Most of the additions were adding more Remy and Gryphon to the story, so I’d like to share Gryph’s introduction. Gryph is an ancient vampire who is trying to figure out what his prophetic dreams are trying to teach him.

Gryphon St. Jean watched the security detail for the big man pile out of the stretch limo as if the Colonel fellow was the president, or the king or whatever petty tyrant was ruling the world right now. The son of a bitch so rarely went out in public, and Gryph took every chance he could get to study the man’s habits, since he was declaring an all-out war on Gryph’s kind.

While there were some of his own who he couldn’t care less about, and he preferred his solitude above all else, decimating his brethren seemed rather rude, to be honest. Not to mention that Gryph lived in what the old bastard considered his “territory.” As if fiefdoms still existed, and all who lived within owed the fellow some kind of homage.

That bullshit had been shot down centuries ago, as far as Gryph was concerned. He didn’t believe in autocracy.

And this had been his “territory” since before the idea of plumbing had crossed any of these assholes’ minds.

He watched the Colonel wander into the restaurant, glad-handing like a politician, which, oddly enough, he wasn’t. He was more the reclusive billionaire with enough firepower to start a war and win.

Oddly dressed, though. Almost like a man from the long war—the blood had run free in those days, and Gryph had feasted on gray and blue coats alike.

He had no political loyalties. Never had, as far as he could recall. This man, though, he lived for petty hierarchies. Three of the guards took up outside the restaurant, the rest going inside. He wondered what the hell the Colonel was doing. Showing off, but why? What was the payoff, so to speak.

The temptation to walk in and sit down and ask was huge. Vast.

Dear puffed-up asshole. Why are you disturbing things? No love. Me.

He grinned. Really, people thought he was so… old-fashioned. Gryphon, however, loved to keep up with slang and technology to a point.

He tapped the edge of one fang with his tongue. A rather fine point.

No sense waiting for the Colonel to come back out. Time to hunt, while all the goons were occupied instead of making rounds of the surrounding area. He was somewhat peckish himself….

There had to be someone available. He wasn’t proud. He was willing to pay for his meals.

Perhaps not the beautiful boys he used to find. He was… well, not more rural than he used to be, but the rural areas had a shorter supply. Rather sad.

He could remember long, wine-soaked sips from beautiful lads. He craved those.

Maybe it was time for him to take on a servant again. It had been years. Decades…. None of the locals appealed, but if he went farther afield…. Maybe. For now he would settle for a rent boy.

There was a house he frequented, the madam smiling at him, encouraging him up the stairs, where a young blond man awaited, legs spread, the windows boarded up in case he overstayed his welcome.

Gryphon slid inside the room, closing the door behind him. The place dripped with cloth, with spangles and sparkles, and his supper was bare and gilt, oiled and wanton. No, this wasn’t just his, but he would take it and be glad he wasn’t one of the poor souls the Colonel had eradicated. This pretty lad had a strong heartbeat, a clean smell, and the same hot, delicious blood of any human.

That would just have to be enough for now.

Much love, y’all.

BA

Long Black Cadillac

Official Blurb

When cop-turned-vampire-hunter Vance is sent to eliminate a bloodsucker from the Louisiana swamps, he figures it’s just another day at the office.

But he has no idea what he’s getting into.

Clay is no ordinary vampire, and the spark he lights in battle-scarred Vance is anything but average. Clay should be the enemy, but Vance is powerless to fight something that feels so right… and so damn good. In Clay’s expert hands, Vance might realize he’s misjudged vampires and that donating a little blood can be sexy as hell.

Clay might even ride to the rescue and save his new love when Vance’s mission goes south and Vance becomes the hunted instead of the hunter. Along with his human familiar, a crazy Cajun named Remy, and the enigmatic older vampire Gryphon, Clay must get to Vance before it’s too late. Then they can find the man who betrayed Vance and take their revenge.

But faced with lies and motives darker than they ever imagined, they’ll have to wade through blood and fight their way to a happily ever after….

Top Ten Things I Learned in Mexico

Hey y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of all things cowboy.

I grew up in Texas and I’ve gone down across the border…a lot. From Reynosa to Guerro to Puerto Penasco to Cancun, I love going down… (evil grin). Here’s the things I’ve learned.

10. Don’t drink the water.

9. You don’t have enough change to buy enough Chiclets to save those babies selling them.

8. Quicksand is a real thing.

7. So is waking up on a golf course with an empty fifth of tequila and a half packet of cigarettes after a night of making out with the hottest little gal….

6. Don’t drink the water.

5. The whole sponge cake thing? Real.

4. There is no better guacamole in all the world.

3. You can buy twelve miniature toy violins for ten dollars.

2. The answer to, “Do you have anything to declare?” is not, “My sister is a bitch.”

1. DON’T DRINK THE WATER. Especially at the airport.

Much love, y’all.

BA

Seashores of Old Mexico

After a bar fight gone horribly wrong, Clint is on the run, tired, hungry, and desperate to get out of Texas and across the border as fast as he can. But more than anything, he needs a place to relax and feel safe—at least for a little while. Searching for work, he stumbles into a cantina on the beach and runs into its owner. Jack might be a little older and a little worldlier, but the two men have enough in common to form a fast friendship that soon spills over into the bedroom.

But Clint isn’t the only who’s done things he isn’t proud of, things he’d rather keep hidden. Both of them have to be ready to drop everything and run if the past gets too close, and that’s no foundation for a relationship—especially since the truth always comes out eventually.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to  have BA Tortuga here talking writing and her latest release, Catch and Release, one of our highly recommended novels. Welcome, BA!

Hey y’all!

BA Tortuga here, the resident redneck and Andrew Grey’s favorite lesbian, and I’m blogging about my new release, Catch and Release, which is the third book in the Release series.

Lord, my editor would be all over me about repetition there! Sometimes it really is deliberate.

Just like picking the next book in a series.

When I was trying to come up with the third book in the Release series, I decided I wanted to use Adam Winchester’s security firm. Win is in book one with his ex-con lover Sage, and I was like, I need to explore Win’s friends some.

Yeah. So I plotted it out on cards. I do that. Each scene gets a card. There’s an author with agoraphobia. A security guard. A big adventure. I tried to write it.

It didn’t fit, y’all. Not at all. See, the Release series is all about re-entering society. In book one, The Terms of Release, Sage gets out of jail and re-joins the world. In book 2, The Articles of Release, Eric comes back from the military injured, and has a tough time getting into the swing of civilian life.

So I was all, sure, the writer will get back out there. Except he didn’t want to, and the security guard didn’t want to work for Win, and it was just a mess. I despaired. I ranted and my wife. I railed against fate.

Then I took some time off to go to the Coastal Magic convention in Daytona Beach. I was standing outside the coffee shop with Andrew Grey, bemoaning the lack of words on Catch and Release. He looked at me and rolled his eyes. “That’s because you’re writing the wrong book,” he said. “You need to write something more like Sage and Win. I loved them.”

I blinked. I nodded. I asked a bunch of questions.

By the time the wife came over with coffee I had the book all planned out in my head. Dakota was there, talking in his quiet, unassuming way.

Andrew was totally right. With a series, you have to pick the right book.

I sure hope y’all love Catch and Release as much as I do.

Much love, y’all,

BA

Catch and Release

The Release Series: Book Three

Dakota Landry just got out of prison after twelve years. If anyone can understand how that feels, it’s his new friend, Sage, who is determined to help him get used to life on the outside—and believes Dakota didn’t commit the crime he was in for.

Jayden Wilson is a former prosecutor who agrees to look into the case at the request of Sage’s lover, Adam. He sets out to prove Dakota is just another “innocent” ex-con, but once they meet, Jayden is more and more convinced Dakota just didn’t do what everyone thinks he did.

Trouble follows Dakota, and nothing is easy as he struggles to figure out how to live, now that he has choices. And Jayden isn’t sure how Dakota, or any lover for that matter, fits into his life. Their path from friendship to romance is a slow one, but Dakota begins to believe he deserves a chance at life, and Jayden falls a little more for Dakota every day. Now they just need to tell each other how they feel.

BA’s personal saviors include her wife, Julia Talbot, her best friend, Sean Michael, and coffee. Lots of coffee. Really good coffee.

Having written everything from fist-fighting rednecks to hard-core cowboys to werewolves, BA does her damnedest to tell the stories of her heart, which was raised in Northeast Texas, but has heard the call of the  high desert and lives in the Sandias. With books ranging from hard-hitting GLBT romance, to fiery menages, to the most traditional of love stories, BA refuses to be pigeon-holed by anyone but the voices in her head.
