A Jeri Review: Debt by KC Wells

Standard

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

da084-debtfs2b252812529Interesting and slightly different premise to this novel by KC Wells. One man has had his heart broken when his long time boyfriend left. One man is trying to pay off the debt of his brother- by working in what is basically a brothel.

Nikko chose, in a way, to work in the brothel to pay off the debt to his brother’s employer- a known drug dealer. He thought he would be working in the kitchen or serving drinks. But really he is behind glass with other prostitutes waiting to get chosen by a john.

Mitch is talked into going to a club with a friend from work. To get himself out there and try to get over his heart break. After a drink in the innocuous bar downstairs, his friend leads him to the secret upstairs. A sex club that offers prostitutes for a price. Mitch has no interest in sex for pay, until he sees Nikko reading in the corner trying to be invisible.

Mitch falls for Nikko and Nikko for him. But…..

Like I said, this was an interesting premise which I really liked. And while Mitch was a character I’ve seen again and again, I really liked Nikko. His loyalty to his brother and his acceptance of the fate he chose was respectable.  Mitch and Nikko together was very hot at times and very sweet and romantic at others. Even with all of the drama that surrounds the situation, I would still call it fairly low angst.

What I didn’t like was that Mitch kind of felt like the knight in shining armor. Swooping in the save the day. Nikko seems to have hero worship towards him and I worried that their love for each other wasn’t quite real because it grew out of such extraordinary circumstances.

A good read, generally likable characters and a tidy (too tidy?) ending that actually leaves it open for another book, either with them as the main characters or someone else taking the spotlight.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is gorgeous.

Blurb

The men from Kiss of Leather gather together to rescue a terrified young sub. But it’s Master Derek who wants to keep him for good.

Master Gavin and his boy, Kyle are celebrating their newly established bond when Master Josh calls requesting their help. Josh’s sub, David, needs the men to help his best friend from childhood while they’re away at a BDSM convention in San Francisco.

Corey ran away from his Master after a horrible scene, but he blames himself for everything that happened. No Master would ever want him if they were to find out what he did. Corey’s not sure if he’ll ever feel safe enough to give himself to a Master again anyway, even if all he’s ever wanted was to belong to somebody.

Master Derek agrees to watch over Corey until Josh and David return from the convention. All he needs is another pretty twink messing with his head and his heart, so the older, growly bear of a man determines to keep his distance. But when Corey wakes up screaming after a devastating nightmare, Derek is more drawn than ever to the young sub – the need to keep Corey safe from whatever or whoever has hurt him becoming his main priority.

Kyle and Corey develop a friendship when Corey assists Kyle in the dungeon furniture workshop. Kyle has his own fears – the ones that make him feel he’s broken because of the things he desires to do with Gavin. Through helping Kyle, and receiving his own help through Derek, Corey decides he’s ready to let go of the demons from his past and move forward into a new life.

Now if Corey can only get Derek to believe that he’s ready – and to finally do something about it.

Excerpt

Derek was not one to live with mystery – especially with someone under his roof. He respected Corey’s boundaries and his need to keep certain things to himself, but he didn’t think it was completely unreasonable to at least attempt to be friendly with each other. Corey finally answered him.

“I’m usually up pretty early. I can’t sleep much past seven, even when I was going to school and it was the weekend.” Corey’s eyes tracked everything in the kitchen that wasn’t anywhere near Derek. “Plus, I get really tired at night. I used to be the one who fell asleep on New Year’s Eve.”

“Used to be?”

Corey finally looked in his direction. “Tony was more of a night owl. He insisted I stay awake the last few New Year’s.”

“Tony your Dom?”

Corey actually appeared to shrink into himself even more. “Ex-Dom.”

“Hmm.” Derek shut off the burners then pressed the lever down on the toaster. “Hungry?”

“Yeah.” Corey nodded with an enthusiasm that made Derek wonder about the kid’s recent circumstances and whether he’d had enough to eat. He finally lifted his gaze to Derek. “Can I set the table for you? Or…something?”

“I’m not that formal here. You can grab the orange juice and butter from the fridge though. I already have plates and glasses.” Derek wondered if he could draw Corey out of himself a bit more. Mundane topics seemed to be relatively safe. The mention of the Dom had caused him to shut down instantly. “Hope you like chorizo and eggs.”

Corey brought over the items Derek had requested. He set them down then moved quickly away.

“Anything you have is great. I meant…” Corey swallowed, his expression pained. “I meant to say thank you to you last night. I should’ve said it to Gavin…” Corey’s eyes flashed up at him with panic. “Um, Master Gavin and Kyle, but they left before I could tell them. This is really cool of you to do. So, thank you.”

Derek offered him a smile. It wasn’t an expression he employed often, but he sensed that Corey needed some reassuring. “Sure. You’re welcome.” He finished pouring the juice then handed the tumblers back to Corey. “Here you go. Have a seat and I’ll get the rest.”

Corey nodded and did what he was told. Derek found himself intrigued by the young man. It was the absolute last damn thing he needed at the moment, but he couldn’t help it. Corey was too young, too pretty – but he didn’t seem to be too spoiled. Derek ached to know more. All he had to do was figure out how to approach Corey without scaring the shit out of him.

A Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review: Dom of Ages (Collars and Cuffs #7) by K.C. Wells and Parker Williams

Standard

Rating: 5 stars out of 5                 ★★★★★

DomofAgesFSJarod has been a submissive for nearly thirty years. He spent twenty-four years with his last Dom, Master Phillip, who perished in a plane crash four years ago. He’s trying to get back in the scene because he needs someone to serve, but he’s constantly belittled by other subs and Doms, all of whom think a man who is nearly fifty is way out-of-place in the world of BDSM clubs. Just as he’s ready to give up and never return, he’s approached by a young Dom who seems genuinely interested in him.

Eli is only thirty, but he knows what he wants, and he wants a sub who will serve his needs. When he spots Jarod, he recognizes the genuine article—a submissive who is thoroughly a submissive and who shows that in every line of his body, and he knows he won’t be happy unless he can take Jarod home.

Eli does indeed take Jarod home, and Jarod begins his service to Eli that very night. He’s so good at it, in fact, that Eli screws up and puts his own needs ahead of those of his sub, and he fails to comprehend the depth of both Jarod’s loss and his desire to be of service.

When the two eventually do communicate, they find that they work well together, and when Eli finally moves on to scenes and then to sex with Jarod, it’s more than either man could have hoped for. But a harsh reaction from some other submissives at Eli’s club leads them to a new location, Collars and Cuffs, and there their relationship takes a turn for the better. In fact, Jarod’s whole life takes a turn for the better as he makes friends with the other subs in the club—subs we’ve met in past books in this series—Peter, Alex, Scott, Damian, Garrett, Pietro—all are strong secondary characters in this book, and it was an enormous pleasure to have time to “visit” with them and their Doms in this book. In fact, it was one of the highlights of the story for me.

Eli and Jarod explore new scenes; Eli is taught by Thomas how to use sounds on Jarod; and Eli, in turn, offers demos on sounds to other Doms. Jarod and the other subs become close friends, and all work to help Peter prepare a very special surprise for Thomas’s fifty-ninth birthday gift. I have to take a moment here to mention that this was my happy-tears-in-eyes moment in this story. When Thomas pulled Peter into his arms, <spoiler>click here</spoiler> I was sobbing happy, sappy tears!

Of course, there’s going to be a dramatic potential break-up scene as there generally is in all books, but the one in this story was really heartbreaking, and to watch the turmoil both MCs went through was very painful. These authors grabbed my heartstrings with this story and proceeded to dance around me like a maypole, tangling up my emotions and creating a very memorable experience. I loved this story! I think it’s moved up to #two on my list of favorites in this series. (#one is Trusting Thomas—I can’t help myself. I love Thomas and Peter!)

I very highly recommend this book to all lovers of MM romance, BDSM, age gap romance, MCs over forty, and I could go on and on. It’s wonderful. Don’t miss out!

A Jeri Review: Let the Wrong Light In by Avon Gale

Standard

Rating:  2.5 stars out of 5

Let The Wrong Light In coverAvery works hard as a junior architect but nothing is good enough for his project manager Malin. After spending weeks on a brilliant design, only to have it red lined again, Avery confronts his boss. What he doesn’t expect is to be attracted to his boss. Sure he is bisexual, but his boss is as cold as Avery is warm.

I’m going to start with what I didn’t like about the book and why I gave it 2 ½ stars. Although it is told in the third person, it was VERY one sided. Almost the entire book was from Avery’s point of view which showed how he does anything and everything to make Malin happy but gets nothing in return. We as readers get nothing in return either.

It isn’t until almost the end of the book that we get Malin’s back story to explain why he is the way he is and while that does explain most of his “personality” (or lack thereof), I wish we had gotten it a lot sooner. By the time it does come up, it took a bit of work to conjour up any sympathy for him.

And sorry, but this is another example of an author playing at BDSM. It is brought up and dropped several times, was far from genuine and never came to a solid conclusion.

The biggest redeemer is Avery himself. He is so funny and likable. Even his one sided conversations made me smile when reading and he kept me turning the pages.

Overall it was ok but left me wanting more.

Cover art by Aaron Anderson. I could absolutely picture Avery as the man on the cover of the book- hipster glasses and all.

Now About The Dom Around The Corner

The Dom Around the Corner cover

Simon is jaded. His bookstore is failing, his personal life is nonexistent, and he’s tired of the local scene. He’s desperate for a change, and hopes to find it at Escape, the hot new BDSM club in town.

What he finds there is Gavin. One look at the sexy submissive is all he needs to know that his trip to Escape was the right decision. And their night of no-holds-barred kinky sex feels like only the beginning . . . until his promising new sub vanishes with the dawn.

Then Gavin walks through the door of Simon’s bookstore—for business, not pleasure. To both of their surprise, he’s the consultant Simon hired to help save the store. As they work together, Simon realizes that he might have another shot at happiness, if only he can convince Gavin that he’s worth sticking around for.

Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review – Room 1024 by Racheline Maltese & Erin McRae

Standard

Rating: 1 star out of 5

Room 1024 covrWhen Cameron takes his submissive boyfriend Noah to a gay men’s leather convention in San Francisco, Cam expects to spend the week exploring their relationship and experimenting with non-monogamy. What he doesn’t expect is to run into his own former dom, Lou, in an embarrassingly public reunion.

While Noah is enthusiastic about the opportunity to play with the former international leather title-holder, Cam is more wary. He and Lou have unfinished business. A four-way encounter with Lou and his sub Stephen could be great fun—or it could show Noah that Cameron can never quite be the dom he wants and needs.

As Cameron and Noah work through the uncertainties in their relationship, Noah is offered everything he ever wanted, in a completely different way than he ever expected, leading all four men to discover that sometimes the only way forward is to revisit the past.

I failed to read the official blurb before reading the book because I didn’t want to be influenced, I just wanted to experience the story. For reasons, I’ll state later, it’s important to include the blurb above.

I included it now, because I did not get all the points listed above from reading the story and, in fact, it wasn’t until I went back and read the blurb that the story made some sense to me. Conclusion? The author did not convey the message she had planned to deliver. My review follows:

Noah convinces his boyfriend, and supposed Dom, Cameron, to take him to a leather convention in San Francisco. While picking up their registration forms and heading back to their room, Cam hears his name called by the speaker at a pre-conference workshop. He’s immediately embraced by big and burly Lou, the Dom doing the workshop. He’s then introduced to the attendees by his full name and profession—Dr. Cameron Beck, professor of queer studies at Boston University. (Is there such a major?) Lou then declares that Cameron used to be his boy and gives him a big smack on the cheek.

When he finally gets back to his room, he tells Noah about seeing Lou and informs him that they are invited to dinner with him. Noah’s enthusiastic response includes the statement that Lou is someone that they can try their “non-monogamy thing” with. When Cam questions him about doing it with Lou, Noah tells him that someone has to take the initiative.

So at this point in the story, I already found myself questioning the protocols at a conference where a former “leather title holder” would grab his former boy and introduce him by his full professional title without permission. And the “non-monogamy thing” Noah mentions is never explained the way it is in the blurb. It’s just stated and we’re never given background about the decision, nor is it really addressed later in the story.

As the story unfolds, it appears that Cam and Lou separated prematurely, and now Cam is longing to get back together with Lou, and Lou, though happy with his new sub, Stephen, doesn’t close out the possibilities for the future with Cam. I would have thought that if Cam is now a Dom, Lou may have been his trainer, but Cam just acts submissive and training is not addressed, so I wonder how Cam ended up being a Dom if his behavior is submissive.

To be honest, I was confused throughout the story in several different settings since Cam is supposedly Noah’s Dom but continually looks to Lou and even outright submits to Lou, going so far as to have alone time in which they have sex, and he submits again. Noah isn’t collared throughout most of the story and does seem to continually ask for more than Cam is willing to provide, even though he has thoughts about how proud he is of Cam and how he hopes that Cam will demonstrate his dominance in a scene. Noah and Cam do end up in Lou’s room (1024), however it’s more of a Noah and Stephen sex scene, with Cam and Lou coaching them than it is all four men together.

By the end of the book, which takes place over the course of the week-long conference, I still felt that the story was disjointed and choppy. I also found use of the present tense in the writing style annoying and confusing. The fact that twenty-four hours later, after reading several of the chapters twice, I’m still confused and having difficulty writing out the review leads me to the conclusion that I need to give the story no more than one star.

A Sammy Review: Unfortunate Son (Sons #1) by Shae Connor

Standard

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Unfortunate Son coverAfter being dishonorably discharged from the military and disowned by his family, Evan Day turns to the world of porn. For Trevor Hardball, Evan’s porn persona, everything comes easily. He can focus himself, knows the way around a good scene… things as Evan aren’t so easy. He’s still dealing with the scars war left internally, not to mention to pain of losing his family, lover, and job all at once.

One night, Riley literally falls into his lap. He’s not Evan’s typical type, but somehow he just intrigues Evan, and after a night of steamy sex, Evan can’t seem to get him off his mind. But life is full of surprises, including his mom reaching back out to him, and Riley’s cold exterior after a hot night…

Their paths may have been different, but they’d ended up much in the same place: isolated, so alone in so many ways, and yet here, together, sharing desire and intimacy.

When I read the blurb for this, I was pretty excited. With porn stars, military, and a loss that’s sure to be gut wrenching, what’s not to love? It should’ve hit all the right buttons, but I’m afraid it was pretty much a complete miss for me.

There was quite a bit of “honey” and other little phrases that just became overused very quickly. It even had me rolling my eyes when a third character started to use them too. It was just… too much. That takes me to another point, which is that I don’t think the characters had enough of their own personality. They all seemed to come from the same template with some slight changes, but I didn’t feel like they were different. For me, it was at times like reading different versions of the same person.

On top of that, the book tries to tackle a lot of issues. Evan had nightmares, sometimes has some conflict between himself as Trevor and Evan, lost his lover and his brother, was disowned by his family (who are now trying to win him back), then you have his best friends in a large part of the story, and then we take Riley who also has family issues and who knows what else – we don’t really get to know, as we hear very little about Riley as a person. I understand that people in general have a lot of stuff happen in their life (to put it mildly), but this was just too much for the author to try to tackle.

I was also very uncomfortable toward the end when there was a BDSM scene that went very wrong, and we knew it would from the very start… but Evan still went into it. We never do find out what happens with that – or Riley’s family.

Having so many issues in one book made it easy to forget to resolve things, or to resolve them too quickly. Besides just the two things I mentioned above, the issue with Evan’s family is fixed super nice and neatly, but then the issue of his nightmares and all the other issues in his life are not paid much attention to.

All of these things got to me, but I think that even if those were all resolved, I would still have a problem in that I did not connect with the characters, and I certainly did not connect with their relationship. I honestly felt more connection in Evan’s porn scene with Adam than I did between Riley and Evan, which made me quite dissatisfied.

That being said, I think the author has potential. The writing wasn’t terrible, and she certainly doesn’t lack for ideas. It’s just a matter of knowing when and how to use them, and making sure that everything is actually treated with the time and respect it needs. If that can’t happen, it probably shouldn’t be in the story at all.

The cover art by Paul Richmond unfortunately did nothing to add flare to the book. I’ve seen Paul do a lot of really great work and praised it, but this isn’t necessarily one of those. Sure, it’s fine, but it’s pretty bland. There’s nothing particularly special about it, and as someone pointed out, it appears that the flag, if considering the height of the model and the way the flag is positioned, is likely touching the ground, something seen as taboo in normal society – so having a model who is meant to depict an ex-marine hold a flag that could be touching the ground is a bit unsettling. To put it simply, I’ve seen Paul do far better.

A Sammy Review: Leather+Lace (Opposites Attract #2) by A.B. Gayle

Standard

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

“In the stillness of remembering what you had and what you lost.”

Leather & Lace coverWhen Steve first meets Don, it’s under not-so-great circumstances. Don’s an arrogant Master, Steve is performing as Stevie and giving blow jobs to raise funds, and together they’re everything each other is trying to avoid.

But there’s a common, tragic thread tying them together, and despite Steve’s fear to fall into the trap he fought so hard to be free of, he’s drawn to Don, and Don to him.

These two apparent opposites can’t help but be attracted to each other.

People can cut in front of you in life too. Prevent you from being who you are meant to be.

So here’s the thing…

I don’t mind BDSM books, but it’s not something I seek out. If it’s too heavy, I tuck tail and avoid it at all costs. But, having read the previous book in the series, I was intrigued and gave this book a shot, and I’m glad that I did.

This book is about a whole lot more than just BDSM. It is about love and loss, pain and struggle, and the delicate balance between freedom and captivity. A.B. Gayle does a beautiful job of showing the art behind M/s relationships and how easy it is to abuse that, and in turn, how the outcome can be truly costly.

The issues that this book deals with are oftentimes not light or fun, but I was sucked right in and simply devoured the book. I’d actually enjoy hearing more about Rob, as he really interested me (or even Kieran. Ooh, now there’s a pair). Additionally, I would’ve liked to see more of Steve’s sister, as I felt she was a really pivotal person in his life, and yet her actual presence was a mere few pages.

Overall, this was a really great read that kept me interested from the very first page to the last.

Anne Cain did a great job on this cover. It captures Steve as a whole, and not just one part of him, and I certainly appreciate that.

A Mika Review: Truth in Lace (Desires Entwined #3.5) by Tempeste O’Riley

Standard

Rating: 3 stars out of 5:

Truth in Lace coverWhen Alexander James Noble looks in the mirror, he sees a freak looking back at him. Despite his high grades and plans for culinary arts school after graduation, his parents would hate him if they really knew him.

Forced on a shopping trip with his twin sister, Lyric, and her friends, Alex eyes the girls jealously, longing to be able to dress like them—to be them. The constant struggle of being “gender fluid,” wrestling with an identity that seems to change daily, begins to wear on Alex. But all those questions and fears seem more manageable when his sister gives him his first skirt and lace panties.

When I say this was a shortie, this was a shortie. I didn’t know how to rate this because it’s literally under 25 pages. Its 24 pages to be exact. I liked it, because it was when Alex first understood  what being gender fluid meant. I didn’t understand the author only producing this short novella as I felt like it could have been more with this subject. What did Alex do, following this coming of age sort of moment? More of his story would have been great. I liked him and Lyric. I liked Lyric supporting him, it was a rarity at their age to understand and accept Alex with no qualms, or restrictions. It was a nice short story and with a nice prologue.

Reese Dante created this cover, and like the previous covers it had symbolism written all over it I liked this cover the best, I really went in with happiness because I thought it would be thoroughly talked about.
