A MelanieM Review: Scratch the Matchmaker by Austin Daniels

Rating: 2 stars out of 5

After his boyfriend moves out of state without telling him, Jay wants only to indulge in a weekend of drunken self-pity. Before he can get started, though, he is rescued by a stray dog.

While obtaining the necessary food and supplies he needs to take care of the dog, named Scratch, he meets Richard, a veterinary student. Better still, Richard offers to meet up to talk to him about caring for a dog.

Lessons in taking care of a dog lead to lessons Jay never expected, but Jay isn’t the only one with a sour past, and all the two men hope to learn from and with each other may be cut all too short.

Well, I only wish the story I found had been half as cute as the premise and the cover.  I think just about everything here needs to be addressed from the format to the multiple points of views that take you immediately away from the main characters story into various side vinaigrettes of dog matchmaking and sex.  There is a weird element of “yes, let’s immediately be boyfriends and D/s even though I just met you” that’s disconcerting as well as downright less than sexy.

Honestly it makes you want to take Jay to therapy and remind him about not talking to strangers.

I wish I could say Scratch the Matchmaker by Austin Daniels is all about perspectives. That its just me. But I really feel that it would be hard pressed to find readers to overlook the faults I found. This needs more than another looksee from a editor or two.  And that’s from someone who adores a dog story within a romance!  It’s just disorganized, the writing is poor and the characters are one-dimensional.  I’d give this one a pass.

Cover design by Michelle Seaver.  Just adorable, from the dog to the design.  Great job.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Submission (Deviations #1) by Chris Owen and Jodi Payne and Narrator: Maxx Power

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Noah is a man in need of submission but hasn’t had any luck finding just the right Dom.  He’s had one contract with a Dom who never found anything to praise him about and was heavily into pain, and one contract with a nice guy who committed the cardinal sin of leaving the room while Noah was in bondage.  Though they are still friendly, Noah cannot submit to him.  He’s done scenes with Bradford, owner of the local BDSM club and Bradford recommended him to Tobias, a very experienced Dom who doesn’t currently have a sub.  Noah comes highly recommended to Tobias and vice versa.  This story is about their early months of navigating the waters between Noah’s needs and Tobias’s desires.

While interesting, and with a conflict thrown in by Phan, Tobias’s former sub who seems to be present all the time at the club and is also still friends with Tobias, the audiobook seemed to drag for me during the scenes in which Tobias and Noah did role play.  I think that’s directly due to the fact that it was an audiobook rather than an e-book and the voices narrator Maxx Power gave the two men did not lend themselves to the particular historical scenarios the men chose to role play.  Also, there were a lot of sex scenes and I’m sorry to say that after awhile they became ho-hum so I was somewhat bored by about three quarters through and looking forward to the end.

I would have preferred a deeper, more masculine voice for Tobias—one which matched his body size, real life profession, and role in the BDSM community.  By the same token, Noah is a cop and his soft, almost feminine voice did not fit the description the authors built for him early in the story.  A few obvious mispronunciations also pulled me out of the story—most notably read—pronounced as reed when it should have been pronounced as red.  So I can’t give points for the narration.

Overall, I would like more about the MCs so I may read the other books in the series, but I’m not sold on them yet, and I’m not sure I’d listen to more audio of this series. If you like BDSM with lots of steamy sex scenes, this is a good one to pick, but I can’t recommend the audio version.

~~~
The black-and-white cover art depicts cuffs and a flogger in black tones on a white background.  Looking at future books, it appears this theme is continued with the cover showing a black-and-white picture of a symbol of the BDSM topic.  For example, the next in the series is Bondage and that cover shows a rope.   It’s an effective way to tie the series together.
Chapter One
Daniel’s on his back, legs splayed wide, Ryan kneeling between them with a wicked smile playing across his lips. Ryan’s sleeves are rolled up to his elbows—they’re going to be horribly wrinkled when they’re done with this—but Daniel can’t gather the breath to complain.
Ryan’s had him on edge for what feels like forever, skimming his fingertips over Daniel’s hole in a dirty tease. Every once in a while, Ryan will drag his knuckles down the length of Daniel’s cock like he’s afraid Daniel’s erection will flag without constant attention.
Just having Ryan in the room with him is enough to keep Daniel hard at this point. Daniel wishes he knew what Ryan wants. Does he want Daniel to break down and beg? Is he testing to see how long Daniel can go without being tempted to touch himself? Does he want Daniel to try so he can slap Daniel’s hands away?
Maybe Ryan’s winding Daniel up so he can deny him. They don’t do it often; Ryan doesn’t get how Daniel can like it so much, and Daniel doesn’t want to spoil himself, but sometimes Ryan will spend hours teasing Daniel so he can tell him no and see if Daniel listens.
Daniel always listens.
His cock throbs at the thought, and he bites down on his bottom lip to keep from asking. It’s not his place to ask. He can’t help the want in his eyes, can’t help the way they plead with Ryan as they meet his gaze. He’d consider it a weakness, except Ryan likes drawing reactions from Daniel’s body. He knows Daniel doesn’t like being vocal, so he gauges his interest in other ways—how he moves into a touch, how his body trembles when he has to work at holding still. How his eyes beg when he wants something particularly badly.
Ryan smiles, fond, and wraps his fist around Daniel’s cock until just the head is poking out. Daniel’s breath comes in short pants and stutters out completely when Ryan bends his head to press a kiss to the tip.
It takes every ounce of Daniel’s self-control to keep from coming. His hands are fisted in his sheets, as if holding on to the fabric means he’ll hold on to the fraying edges of his control.
“I want to suck you,” Ryan says, breath ghosting over Daniel’s cock, “but that would be cruel given what my plans are for you.” Ryan slides off the bed before he holds a hand out to Daniel.
It takes a moment for Daniel to unclench his hands, to ease up on the death grip he has on the sheets, but when he does, he puts his hand in Ryan’s and lets the other man help him stand up. He doesn’t know what they’re doing next, and excitement buzzes beside worry as he watches Ryan for his next cue. Lately, he’s been giving more and more control over to Ryan; not just in scenes but in the planning of scenes.
Having a…partner, someone he scenes with regularly and talks to outside of sex, means that they know each other well enough to start reading each other’s moods and wants. Daniel has a pretty comprehensive list of things that Ryan likes and knows his hard nos, but now he can tell whether a work week is going to make Ryan want to put Daniel on his knees when he gets home and just have Daniel warm his cock until he’s unwound enough to fuck him or whether fucking Daniel hard and a little bit messy is exactly what he needs.
And Ryan’s picked up this uncanny ability to practically read Daniel’s mind.
“Time to get dressed,” Ryan says, and Daniel’s eyes are drawn to where his clothes are sitting in a sloppy pile on the floor. This is what happens when Ryan gets him undressed. “Complaint duly noted.” Ryan puts Daniel’s clothes on the bed so Daniel won’t have to bend down for them and then he backs off, letting Daniel know that he’s on his own for this.
Daniel’s slow as he steps through the leg holes of his briefs, even slower as he drags the fabric up his legs. His eyes flutter shut as the soft material touches his overly sensitive skin. His body works against him now; desperate for relief, every nerve ending is on high alert, waiting for just enough stimulus to tip him over the edge.
He’s careful as he pulls the rest of his clothes on, and it’s a struggle to go slow enough he doesn’t overwhelm himself but not so slow that getting dressed becomes a tease of its own. Pulling up the zipper on his jeans is the worst; pressure and a little bit of pain, as it presses his erection into place, but as soon as he pops the button through the waistband, he feels settled. He feels contained, like he can do this.
Whatever this is.
He lifts his gaze to Ryan, unable to help his smile when he sees the pride in Ryan’s eyes. He did that. He put that look on Ryan’s face.
“Absolutely incredible,” Ryan murmurs, stepping forward so he can cup Daniel’s face in his hands. “I wonder how far this composure goes.” Ryan taps his fingers against Daniel’s skin. “I wonder what you would look like walking down the street like this.”
Dread washes through Daniel, sharp and cold, and it effectively kills the erection Ryan’s worked so hard to keep up. Some of his panic must show on his face, because Ryan goes from teasing to concerned in seconds.
“Not good?” Ryan asks, easing Daniel down so he’s sitting on the bed.
“Not good,” Daniel agrees. Because what if they’re walking down the street and run into Tracy? Or what if they pop by the grocery store and their boss is there? He can’t. Not when his control is this fragile. Ryan likes the fragility of it, and he might punish Daniel if it breaks, but he won’t mock him. Won’t think worse of him for it.
If anyone else…
No.
“Okay,” Ryan says. “Okay, that’s a no go.”
“Sorry,” Daniel says.
“Nothing to be sorry for,” Ryan assures him. He crouches between Daniel’s legs so Daniel doesn’t have to crane his neck to look up at him.
Daniel knows he doesn’t have anything to be sorry for. He doesn’t even know why he apologized in the first place. They both have hard limits, both have soft limits, and sometimes they stumble on them accidentally. It doesn’t mean either of them has done something wrong. Daniel still feels off-balance, the scene cut off before it finished.
“What do you want?” Ryan asks. “I can run a bath, we can get back into bed, whatever you want.”
“What was the original plan?” Daniel asks. Maybe finishing the scene will be enough to reorient himself. Unless Ryan’s plan was to go out for a walk, to parade Daniel through the streets to—
“Hey,” Ryan says, voice sharp enough to pull Daniel out of his thoughts but not enough to startle him. “I wouldn’t spring that on you. I was going to bring you into the living room, have you blow me with the TV on, tell you to imagine the voices you heard were people in the room, watching you, admiring you. But it sounds like it’s something you don’t want.”
He doesn’t. He’s too raw right now. He doesn’t know what he does want, though.
“All right,” Ryan says. “We’ll get your clothes off, cuddle for a bit. Maybe I’ll get my mouth on you after all.”
Daniel doesn’t want to be coddled. He got pulled out of their scene, out of his headspace, but he doesn’t want to be treated like he’s going to fall apart any moment. He feels even more ridiculous getting this worked up over getting a blow job, but—
“You’re frowning again,” Ryan says, dragging his thumb across the crease between Daniel’s eyebrows as if he can rub it out.
“I’m not fragile,” Daniel says. He likes it when Ryan wears his control down until it’s thin enough he doesn’t know whether or not it’ll snap. But it’s a different kind of fragile than this. Daniel doesn’t like Ryan’s being hesitant with him.
“You want to earn it?” Ryan asks. “You think I’m giving something to you too easy?”
Daniel nods.
“In that case, I’m going to blow you, and you’re not going to be able to come until you’re so desperate you’re crying,” Ryan says. “That better?”
Daniel nods again, mouth dry.
“Words,” Ryan says. “Is that what you want?”
“Yes,” Daniel says. “Please.”
Ryan’s lips turn up into a smile, too sharp to be friendly. “I love it when you ask for things you know are going to hurt.” He gives Daniel’s shoulders a push, and Daniel tips backward onto the bed.
An Alisa Audiobook Review: Wrapped in Chains by Cindy Sutherland and Narrator: John Anthony Davis
Rating:  3 stars out of 5
Devon West is a professional Dom who runs his own club, doesn’t believe in romance, and has never been in a long-term relationship. All this changes when he rescues Chase Mackenzie.
Chase is a runaway who has been kept as a slave since he was sixteen. Now twenty-three, he’s still innocent and sweet despite being severely abused and left behind by his Dom.
When Devon finds out that the man who held Chase hostage is the same man who hurt him terribly when he started learning about the sub/Dom lifestyle, he knows he has to keep Chase safe.
Spoiled rich boy and sociopath James Kingston is obsessed with Devon. He’s convinced Devon would be his perfect sub and Devon only thinks he’s a Dom because he needs proper discipline. Losing Chase to Devon is like rubbing salt in the wound, and he’s determined to get them both under his thumb. This time, Chase may need to rescue Devon.
This story was nice but I can’t say it was really good.  You know from the beginning that Devon rescues Chase and falls in love with him all while Chase falls in love with Devon.  But there is the added tension of Kingston, who is quite crazy from the sounds of it.
We see this story through both Chase and Devon’s eyes which gives us a good idea of what they are thinking and feeling.  Chase is a natural sub and easily submits to Devon’s Dom but this is the first time he has ever been cherished or treated well as a sub.  Devon has a hard time believing that Chase could actually really want him, they kept talking about him being older but when I would run through the timeline in my head he couldn’t be more than 5 years older than Chase.  Devon had a strong family of his friends around him and they quickly adopted Chase into the fold.  There was just something missing to this story to make it really good, but I can’t quite tell you what it was.
John Anthony Davis did a nice job narrating this story.  I was able to keep track of the story and characters with the different voices he used.  However, he often used a softer voice tone which didn’t match with what I often though Devon would sound like as a Dom.
Cover art by Paul Richmond is nice and works well for this story
A MelanieM Review: Branded by Flames (Dragon Soul, #1) by Sean Michael
Rating: 4 stars out of 5
Meet the Beteferoce brothers. Five dragon shifters, each with a strong elemental power. And each with a fierce desire to find his soul mate…
For years, dragon-shifter-slash-firefighter Jake has been searching for his mate, but he’s beginning to tire of the search. Maybe soul mates are only for the lucky few.
Then he meets Shae.
A former navy welder, Shae is handsome, talented, into power play and rough sex, and covered in dragon tattoos. All of this suits the shape-shifting dragon just fine—until he finds out that Shae literally has Jake’s family crest already tattooed on him. A coincidence? Or something more…
Jake must convince Shae to trust him as a man and as a Dom before the heat between them burns out of control. Becoming a dragon’s mate is not without danger, and Shae will need Jake’s guidance—and love—if he’s going to make it through alive.
I found the Dragon Soul series by Sean Michael by reading the second book in the series first, Seduced by the Tide and loved it.  So of course that meant I had to go running back to find the first and get caught up on what I missed out, the world building and the references alluded to in the second story that I didn’t quite understand.  I am delighted to say that Branded by Flames is just as hot (no pun intended), just as sexy as I was hoping while giving me some of the foundation I was looking for this series.  I can see that Michael intends to draw out the information about each brother and the dragons in general over the series, which I’m more than ok with.  I’m full of anticipation now to see how each brother’s story plays out.
Here Jake (of course I have the benefit of the second story) seems to understand the significance of all the dragons that decorate Shae’s skin and occupy his mind and art.  We will too after a while.  Shae has a past with a Dom that’s left him alone, outside of the leather community.  Part of this story is all about trust issues, breaking trust and rebuilding it.  How do you do that when one of you is a dragon?  Interesting situation.  There is a lot of kinky sex play here as Jake and Shae start to explore boundaries and issues of trust.  If you’re not into BDSM or D/s, this is not the series or book for you.  If you are, read on!
I find the two of them incredibly sexy together, combustible even (ok someone had to say it).  Jake the dragon needed more work for me as a character than Shae the man, Shae having more depth, more poignancy given his past history and pain.  However, we get to see them again in Seduced by the Tide and there they come together even better as a couple.
Branded by Flames is the first of at least five stories as there are five Beteferoce dragon brothers looking for their soulmates.  I have to admit Mark’s story is the one I want the most. But that’s not to be. Park ranger Luke Beteferoce is the next brother to get his story.  See you in September!  Until then, if you love dragons, hot sex and kink, here’s a series for you!
Cover art is hot and perfect for the story.
A Jeri Review: Saving Sebastian (Custos Securities, #3) by Luna David
Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5
This is book three in the series but can be read as a stand alone. Tons of character cross over, but really the story lines are completely separate.
While I did enjoy this book more than the first two, it is plagued with many of the same issues. Way, WAY too wordy- too much irrelevant information and too much repetition. So once again there was quite a bit of skimming. We are also led to believe that Sebastian’s health problems are a port wine stain on his face and neck and although we find out it is much more than that, it wasn’t like a big aha moment at all.
That being said, I really did like the story.  This book really deals with BDSM in a way the first two didn’t. Again though, the contract between them and how often they saw each other for scenes was a bit similar to a well know mainstream BDSM novel. At least in this one they both really stuck to the contract to keep it impersonal.
I did love watching Sebastian’s growth from complete loner to accepting that he does have friends and people who genuinely cared for him. It was really sweet when he allowed himself to be loved, helped and cared for by other people.
Gideon’s switch flipped too quickly for me. From “omg I am a horrible person who did horrible things and don’t deserve love” to “omg I love him so much” really fast. A bit too fast.
Overall it is a good story. I think you will enjoy it if you enjoy BDSM stories. What they ultimately give each other as far as love and confidence was beautiful.
Cover art works great for the storyline and characters.
An Alisa Audiobook Review: The Perfect Sub (Iron Eagle Gym #2) by Sean Michael and Jeff Gelder (Narrator)
Rating:  2 stars out of 5
While new couple Tide and Lance spend time deepening their relationship and further introducing Lance to the joys and vagaries of being a sub, established couple Tyrone and Bran discover that they still have a thing or two to learn as well.
A new job finds Bran run off his feet, and a visit to the eye doctor leads to the discovery of a brain tumor. Bran is terrified. He strives to be the perfect sub for his beautiful master and sees the tumor as a personal failing as he tries to handle every last phone call, e-mail, and text that comes in, no matter how early or late. When Tyrone finally finds out about the tumor Bran’s been keeping a secret, he realizes he’s been taking his sub for granted, and he works to rediscover his boy and their relationship. Of course, that’s easier said than done given that Bran’s job is taking up all his time and he would rather pretend the tumor just doesn’t exist than actually deal with it.
It’s going to take all of Tyrone’s prowess as a master to help guide Bran through these troubled waters.
I am usually a fan of Sean Michael’s books but this one did not work for me and it was a combination of elements in the story and narration that made it even worse.  Bran and Lance both had so much trouble throughout the first part of the book thinking that they weren’t “worthy” of their masters and that is one dynamic that doesn’t work for me along with the focus on perfection and people looks.  In the end the focus on being perfect was pushed aside for being partners and perfect for each other which was nicer.  Other than that I had a hard time following the timeline in the story but I’m sure if that was from not having the story in front of me to see or not.
Unfortunately I can’t really say that Jeff Gelder did a nice job narrating the story.  He used different voices for each character but they would change throughout the story and then the character described as having a “deep sexy voice” had a very feminine lilt and soft voice most of the time.  He tried really hard to make it sound sensual but I just got the feeling that I was listening to a bad porno.  I think it’s safe to say that this story did not work for me, maybe at some point I can go back and try to read it and see if I don’t have quite the same opinion of it but it won’t be anytime soon.
Cover art by L.C. Chase is nice and goes with the series.
Layla Dorine on Lucky and the Rollin’ Jokers MC, and her story ‘Burning Luck’ (guest post, and excerpt)
Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Layla Dorin on her Burning Luck tour. Welcome, Layla!
♦︎
Good morning and thank you for having me on your blog today to talk about Lucky and the Rollin’ Jokers MC. I didn’t start out looking to write an MC story, Burning Luck sort of evolved two years ago during National Novel Writing Month, from this vague scene written in a notebook at bedtime, to the novel that’s that been released. Over the year and a half of writing it, it went through several changes, additions, two rounds of Beta Readers and two trips to BDSM writers con to learn as much as I could about writing safe, sane and consensual BDSM scenes that would read as not only erotic but believable. During that time, the characters grew and evolved a great deal too, as did their world, to the point where there are now plans for at least one more story, featuring another pairing mentioned in Burning Luck.
I grew up around motorcycles, after hours clubs, men in leather and many pieces of the biker culture, it’s in my blood, but the men I knew we’re violent, they weren’t into criminal activities, guns, drugs, or any of the 1 percenter activities that get glorified so much in television and movies. They held steady jobs, most of them blue collar workers at the factories around town, a few owned their own businesses, several had families, pets you could see them out walking, and yards they’d be outside every Saturday trying to mow.
Burning Luck is a nod to that lifestyle. The love of bikes and clubs formed to enjoy that love and while there is talk of a few members being involved in smuggling activities in the beginning, it is to set the tone for them wiping the last shady activity from their club. So, if you enjoy bikers, BDSM, angst, and three men finding their way towards a relationship, then Burning Luck just might be the story for you.
Burning Luck Blurb
Lucky Strike McAllister isn’t very lucky. In fact, he isn’t much of anything most days, to hear his MC tell it. Since the death of his father from cancer and the suicide of his pops, he’s done nothing but find ways to get into trouble. He’s talented with an airbrush gun and an amazing artist when he sets his mind to it, but more often than not, the things Lucky sets his mind to are pretty self-destructive.
When Thorn and his partner Cain, members of the neighboring chapter of the Rollin’ Jokers, are forced to fish Lucky out of the ocean on a chilly fall night, both men decide he needs a keeper and who better than them to keep Lucky from destroying himself. Too bad Lucky can’t see that they’re trying to help. Bitter and lashing out, he does everything he can to sabotage the home and relationship they’re offering.
With secrets mounting and trouble knocking on their doorstep, Lucky struggles to find a way to put aside his anger long enough to get to know the two men who have taken such an intense interest in him. As tensions mount, will he look to take the easy path and he run from them, his club and everything he’s ever known, burning bridges and the last of his luck in the process or will he stay and learn that there are better ways to burn?
Excerpt
The photograph was old and a little bit faded, folded down the center from being kept in his wallet for years. Lucky stroked his finger across the surface, brushing away a little bit of sand. He was thirteen in the image, long before his Old Man had gotten sick and his Pops had decided he couldn’t deal with the grief of having lost him and decided to jump off a fuckin’ cliff. Everything had seemed almost perfect back then. Now, everything was just a disaster.
A Christmas tree loomed behind them, wrapping paper all around their feet, the camera had caught the lights twinkling, and the joy on Lucky’s face as he waved the keys to his new dirt bike toward the camera. The best part about the bike hadn’t been the freedom, it had been the time his Old Man and his Pops had spent teaching him to ride right. It had been the family races, the life lessons around campfires in the middle of nowhere, the stories, the laughter, the ability to just be away from town for a little while.
The crunch of boots on gravel caused him to hastily tuck the photo back in his wallet and shove it in his pocket again.
“You ridin’ out to the point?”
Lucky turned his eyes away from the rolling waves to see his best friend studying him intently.
“Naw, I can’t deal with that shit tonight,” Lucky drawled as he dug in his front pocket for a stick of gum. Trying to quit smoking sucked, at least the gum took his mind off it for a little while.
“You okay?”
Lucky’s eyes narrowed into a glare. Of course he wasn’t okay, how the fuck could anyone expect him to be okay after the shit year he’d had? He seriously doubted that he would ever be okay again, but he knew his oldest friend was just trying to show concern for him, whether Lucky really wanted it or not. When Cody didn’t back down, Lucky just sighed and muttered curses about his persistence, wishing he’d just fuck off for a bit and leave him alone. He didn’t deserve Cody’s concern, or anyone else’s, not after all the bullshit he’d gotten into over the last few months. Maybe if he’d been home more instead of being stupid, his Pops wouldn’t have…
He swallowed hard, feeling his gut clench and his eyes start to sting, again. Deep breaths, he told himself, refusing to fall apart in front of Cody again. Tears were useless anyway, all of the damage had already been done. A cold wind blew off the water, making him shiver, and Lucky closed his eyes, breathed in the salt air and bit back a curse as he felt Cody settle on the rock beside him.
“You’re not okay,” Cody said softly.
Lucky’s fists clenched, he bit the inside of his cheek to keep from screaming, No fucking shit at the top of his lungs. Instead he muttered, “I’m alive, that’s about as okay as it’s gonna get right now.”
“You’ve got to start easing up on yourself. Ray’s death wasn’t your fault.”
“I should have been there, Cody!” Lucky exploded, nearly falling off the rock as he turned towards him, frustration and anger practically radiating off of him. “Damnit, if I’d been there I could have talked him out of it, I know I could have. He was my Pops, he would have listened to me.”
“No, Lucky, he wouldn’t have, not in the end. Maybe that night, but you couldn’t have watched him twenty-four seven. If he was bound and determined to off himself, then damn it he was gonna find a way to do it, even if it was while you were off at the store grabbing a gallon of milk.”
“Fuck you,” Lucky snarled.
Cody exhaled a slow, shaky breath and brushed his shoulder length brown hair back from his eyes before reaching out to curl his fingers around Lucky’s arm.
“Why do you think he waited until he knew you were out of town? He didn’t want you to be the one to find him. You read his note the same as I did, he didn’t want to feel as if he was letting you down.”
“Isn’t that exactly what the fuck he did!”
“Yeah, it is, but he didn’t want to think about that. He didn’t want to consider that you might still need him. He didn’t want your love in that moment, Lucky, he wanted to be selfish. He wanted all of his pain to end. He wasn’t thinking about the pain he was gonna cause anyone else.”
Lucky snarled an oath and Cody scooted closer, trying to maneuver him into a hug, but Lucky resisted.
“Fuck man, I miss him too, I spent as much time at your place when we were growing up as I did at my own. He was like an uncle to me. I would have been right there on the edge of that cliff with you, trying to talk him down, but he didn’t give either of us that chance. He didn’t give my old man that chance and he was one of Ray’s oldest friends. He’s gone, Lucky. There’s nothing either of us can do about it now. Tonight let’s just ride out to the point, have a bonfire, eat some good food and remember what he meant to all of us.”
Silence. Lucky tried to let Cody’s words sink in. He knew he was right, that it was past time for being mad about what his Pops had done, but Lucky couldn’t stop being angry. He couldn’t stop feeling like he could have done more. Couldn’t stop feeling like he’d failed the only person left in the world who really fuckin’ loved him.
“I’m not going,” Lucky said as he yanked his arm from Cody’s grasp. “I’m gonna stay here until I get tired, then I’ll go home, maybe grab a frozen pizza on the way.”
“You can’t survive on orange juice and pizza.”
“I’m pretty sure it covers all the food groups,” Lucky muttered as he returned his gaze to the ocean. The waves seemed to be calming, which was a shame. He liked them high and angry, the crash of them against the rocks had been like an echo of his own mood.
Swearing, Cody grabbed Lucky’s arm and gave him a shake. “God dammit, Lucky, don’t make us bury you too.”
“You guys can cremate me if you want, scatter my ashes in the ocean and forget you ever knew me,” Lucky muttered.
Eyes narrowing, Cody released Lucky’s arm and punched him in the mouth. Lucky recoiled, more shocked than hurt as he watched Cody climb to his feet. A thin trickle of blood flowed from Lucky’s split lip, but he didn’t even bother reaching up to wipe it away.
An Alisa Review: Facing Fears (Kiss of Leather #7) by Morticia Knight
Rating:  4.5 stars out of 5
As the men at Kiss of Leather celebrate the resolution of the case of Corey’s kidnappers, Master Hunter worries that he’ll never see Tobey again.
Chuck isn’t about to let one of the key figures behind Corey’s kidnapping get away from him again. Everything he and Stone have discovered through their months-long investigation is about to come together. However, when Chuck follows the suspect to a shipyard, it’s not only his own life that’s in danger.
Master Hunter is officially part-owner of Kiss of Leather, so he’s thrilled to raise a toast in celebration now that the mystery of Corey’s kidnapping has been solved. However, he can’t help but feel left out. Everyone is paired up except for him. He’s never believed in monogamy before, but after Tobey unexpectedly left Kiss of Leather and no one knows where he’s gone, did Hunter make a horrible mistake by not sharing his true feelings?
Tobey has been miserable ever since leaving West Hollywood and going back to Idaho. After breaking his own promise to himself by falling in love with his trainer, Tobey impulsively left Kiss of Leather because of something awful Master Hunter said. But things at home are worse than ever and he’s come to realize that those who are related to him by blood aren’t necessarily his true family. The only place he’s ever felt he truly belonged was at Kiss of Leather.
Tobey has to face Hunter if he goes back to Kiss of Leather and Hunter has to figure out what he really wants from life and love. It takes a charity slave auction to show them what they’ve both been too stubborn to see.
This was another great story in this series, it starts right off where the Cutting Cord stopped so there is no gap in between.  I loved getting to see more of Liam and Neal’s relationship before we delved into the dynamics of Hunter and Tobey.  I love how we get to continue to see all the other characters from the previous stories and see how they continue to grow and help each other.
Hunter had emotionally hurt Tobey sometime during the last book, but it wasn’t something we saw.  When Tobey returns they both need to re-evaluate what happened before and maybe take a closer look at themselves.  I loved how determined Hunter was once he finally admitted his true feelings, he just has to have the courage to really open up to Tobey.
Tobey really need someone to love and care for him, seeing him feel rejected by Hunter and then again by his family is heartbreaking; I just wanted to hug him and tell him everything would be fine.  Hunter tries to plan everything down to a T in order to show Tobey how he feels but when it doesn’t all go to plan he really adapts quickly and they are able to work everything out between them.  I did feel that once they actually talked and got together things resolved quite quickly but it didn’t take away from the story for me.
The cover art by Posh Gosh is gives great visuals of the characters and follows the pattern for the series.
