Review: Nobody Told Me Thrift Shops Sell Stolen Dragon Heirlooms by Lindsey Devin

Honestly, stop with the cover traps. Yes, put a Belgian Malinois or GSD on it and yes, I’m going to pick it up. It’s a given. And the authors known as Lindsey Devin fills the story with them. 

Really? Sigh. 

Nobody Told Me Thrift Shops Sell Stolen Dragon Heirlooms by Lindsey Devin is an absolutely adorable urban fantasy romance that sealed the deal for me with the dog that was main character all the way through the tale, a retired veteran service dog, a gentleman of enormous charm and character, Max.

Quinn Bradley, the overworked law intern, was another delightful aspect of the story. Layered, independent, intelligent and resourceful, along with Max, she worked realistically (as one does with dragons and otherworldly beings) in her professional role as well as feeling like a partner here in her relationships with Max and her friends. I so thoroughly enjoyed her conversations with everyone and her dynamic. 

Rafe Virelli is a nice change from some of the other types of dragons that appear in these books as is his family. The background and ongoing storyline with his mother is handled so beautifully, and realistically. There’s no miracle here but the acceptance of her continued condition and their love for her. And his father’s love for his wife. 

The way that the story ends is perfect imo. I was thrilled when it ended here, and not in the expected direction of most romances. That wouldn’t make sense given the circumstances and time constraints. 

With Nobody Told Me Thrift Shops Sell Stolen Dragon Heirlooms by Lindsey Devin there are so many great narrative choices made by the authors that, combined, give this book a fantastic energy and a great story. 

Highly recommended! Honestly, that cover! Going to show it to my dog right now! She has opinions.

Review: Nobody Told Me Dragons use Libraries by Lindsey Devin

I really enjoyed Nobody Told Me Dragons use Libraries by Lindsey Devin, the name a team of writers co author under. 

This makes for an inconsistency in the writing by books I find listed under this name, however this story is worth reading.

It’s well paced, the characters are engaging and the dialogue is very cleverly executed. This is what i hope to get when I reach out for more of their content. 

Librarian Artemis and Dragon Arthur are both very endearing and relatable characters. Each one has their own individual struggles with their respective parents, Artemis with her toxic relationship with her parents and Arthur with his memories of his father and his role as the head of the clan. How the authors are able to genuinely understand and express their love and respect for each other and their knowledge of literature is one of my favorite things about the book.

The relationship between Arthur and Artemis is believable and builds upon true feelings and a great dynamic between intelligent people who respect each other.

This is a low heat romance that waits until the end for any kind of romantic love. 

There’s wonderfully endearing side characters that I could have enjoyed watching more of. 

This was just lacking a bit of world building but overall it is a great paranormal romance and adventure story. Intelligent, engaging and very well written. 

Highly recommended.

Review: What A Dragon Should Know (Dragon Kin Book 3) by G.A. Aiken

I don’t know how this book managed to be highly smutty, downright hilarious, and also tear my heart out, all in one. 

This book sets the bar high for any book that follows it. Ah, Gwenvael the Handsome! That rascal dragon who loves being a lover while evading his responsibilities as a Dragon Prince. He’s been an absolutely engaging and entertaining secondary character in recent stories, a true scene stealer!  That flirtatious class clown who no one takes seriously but you just know has depth of character if you could just get him focused. 

Here he gets his chance to shine, or maybe show his truth. And in a way that is startling, hilarious, and often heartbreaking. I mean, I cried buckets at one point. 

The complexity of plotting here is breathtaking. The main storyline of Gwenvael and Dagmar Reinholdt, aka The Beast, is highly engaging . A plot in itself that is emotionally charged and thoughtful story of deeply flawed family dynamics, damaged familial relationships, and differing perceptions of love.

Then, in more beautifully crafted and woven stories, we get the heart heavy storylines of the other characters and family members being pulled together into the central plot. 

This will showcase the gods that we’ve met. Dive deeper into their agendas, and see exactly how they view each other’s actions, especially as it’s has ramifications for the characters themselves. 

I really didn’t expect this element or aspects of the story and series. I thought, afterwards, it was necessary to show exactly how remote and “godlike “ these beings are. And that benevolence is not a godly concept but a human one. 

Tears, people, great, ugly, sobbing tears.  

Yes, it may end with what appears to be a good feeling finish but upon another reading, (honestly it takes several ) for all the aspects of the details and plotting to form the complex puzzle that this author is creating.  And that leaves a slight sense of foreboding for all in the upcoming books. 

At the third book, I’m excited for this series and the rest of the journey. 

But what a bar to set going forward. Fabulous!

Review:  Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, #1) by G. A. Aiken

Written by Dragon Actually contains two complete stories. Dragon Actually and then one that’s a bit of a prequel, Chains & Flames. But the order here is actually better imo. 

The first story is the violent journey of Annwyl the Bloody to remove her heinous brother from the throne and save her people. During a heated battle, Fearghus the Destroyer, a dragon of immense power and fearsome legend, comes into her path in an unexpected twist. 

Annwyl is battle hardened , often violent, and physically powerful. Shes also with rage and prone to battle madness. We get little of her background except that it was extremely abusive,  physically damaging. Her father, the dead King being even worse than the brother who succeeded him, the brother being an obsessive horror. 

The dragons, yes, a huge group of excessive personalities, a ruling family of them, are well defined. Each with a specific character and definitely non-human traits. Hair color as an element of dragon color, while not new, is nicely done here and matches a type of personality as well it seems. 

There’s some hilarious scenes as Annwyl and Fearghus get acquainted with each other. Arrogance and rage are well matched within their relationship dynamics. 

Fearghus’ sister is another favorite character along with Annwyl’s general.  I could wish that her brother and that history was better explored here. We don’t get a full picture of him, his upbringing, or what drives him here. Nor those around him. So the battle is one-sided. And that leaves the narrative a bit unbalanced.

The relationships between dragons, dragon and human are all very different. So you don’t really feel like the dragons are “human coded” which is great.  

The dragon queen and consort are intriguing. Which makes it great that the second story included here is their origin romance and the Queen’s journey into her role.  It’s appropriately titled Chains & Flames. 

Both are very sexual creatures, kinky, and the story is full of their sexual encounters as she fights her mother for the Crown and control over her life. Think collars and chains and Claiming. 

Which brings me to the covers.

Oh that cover. It does read total dragon fantasy but for what age group? Both  are very spicy, kinky violent stories. Heads rolls, lots of sex scenes, some with chains and collars but in a different definitely non-villainous aspect.  Does that cover read that? Hmm don’t think so. It’s so cute. 

The author, G. A. Aiken , turns out to be a pen name for author Shelly Laurenston, an author I recently discovered (and love) and am now working on her backlog of books. So is that two writers in one? Looks like! 

Anyway, here’s another older series about dragons, dragon shifters, women warriors, and roads to romance. I enjoyed it! A lot. But if you want a sweet fantasy novel, this isn’t it. Bloody swords, battles, and raging women? Yes. Read this.

Review: Ruins (Wings ‘N’ Wands Book 1) by A.J. Sherwood and Jocelynn Drake

Ruins marks the outstanding beginning of Wings ‘N’ Wands series by A.J. Sherwood and Jocelynn Drake. It’s a spin-off or sequel series to their Scales ‘N’ Spells saga about dragons and their mages.

The Ice Dragon clan was introduced in the first series so we already have (if you’re a fan or reader of those novels) a solid understanding of the characters and foundation of the Ice Dragons history going into Ruin.

But for those who don’t, the authors weave the tragic past , the devastating wars and loss into the storylines here. It’s so satisfying to see King Rodrigo and Ha Na, as well as others again.

However, it’s Dr Samuel Hunter, archeologist, searching for the long lost Tupã dragon clan and the neighboring Sousa Mage clan, who’s so easy to connect with. From a mage family where his twin brother is favored because of his magical abilities and Samuel isn’t taken as seriously because of a broken core, Samuel is someone we can identify with and feel for.

Troubling family dynamics aside, his personality is lively and engaging. Which makes Dimitri’s drive to have a relationship believable .

The authors include an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of the missing dragon and mage clans, the research for a solution to Samuel’s broken core, and an entire clan of Ice Dragons with mage mate drama.

It’s an engrossing story, full of adventure, dragon flight, romance, and poignant moments. I loved every bit of it. And I’m looking to see what shape the next story takes.

A MelanieM Review: Omega from the Ocean (Heron Manor Book 1) by Amy Bellows

An MM Retelling of The Little Mermaid. With dragons.

Merman Jack is a terrible virgin sacrifice. Mostly because he isn’t virginal. At all.

Hopefully the Sea King won’t notice.

For Jack, the human world has too many wonderful temptations, and too many alphas to resist. He only has two months left before he has to give himself to the Sea King, and he doesn’t want to spend them in the cold, dark catacombs where the Mermen of Rixton live. It may be forbidden for Jack to go to shore, but when did that ever stop him?

Peter is a terrible dragon shifter. He can’t figure out what he’s supposed to collect for his hoard. Without his hoard, he can’t do any of the important dragon-shifter things, like take his dragon form or find his fated mate. After years of losing his lovers to their fated mates, Peter’s feeling his age, and he’s tired of being alone.

When Peter sees a beautiful merman on the beach, he thinks he’s finally found his fated mate. Jack falls hard for Peter too, but he knows they can’t be together forever. If Jack doesn’t show up on the day of his sacrifice, the Sea King will kill his father and take his brother instead.

Will the love between a terrible virgin sacrifice and a terrible dragon shifter be enough to change their fate?

I came to this book and author through a roundabout way.  A FB group I subscribe to was asking what everyone was reading at the moment and for one person the excited answer was Omega from the Ocean (Heron Manor Book 1) by Amy Bellows.  A few others chimed in about how they all loved her writing and a couple had read and adored this story as well.  

I was already making a note on my phone because I had never heard of the book or author.  A few questions later and it sounded like it was on my list of novels to read this month.  That tag line especially had me hooked.  A twist on the Little Mermaid?  In my head I knew that could go from the traditional dark Grimm original to the Disney happi[y HEA to anything M/M sexy and well mermany. Yes, I know, not a word. Sue me.

Amy Bellows gives us a story that ecompasses a bit of all three in Omega from the Ocean (Heron Manor Book 1).  It starts off with a overlay of lighthearted  sexy fun as Jack aka Seafoam the merman can’t stay away from the human world, specifically the horney frat houses full of willing bodies and a nearby house where he can catch a glimpse of the Prince of his dreams.  Jack comes off initially as gorgeous, adorable, sexy…..and as far from virginal as can be. 

The Prince?  That would be a Dragon shifter who can’t shift because he can’t figure out what he is supposed to be hoarding.  Cute right? He has two moms, one of whom hoards herons, that’s where the name of the series comes in.  So far so light.

Then we get more information about Jack, his plight as a sacrifice, the state of the mer people, and the whole tale takes a turn towards the Grimm while bringing in the LGBT romance, both MM and FF for the Prince’s moms.

Bellows does a great job of laying down a universe that the author will continue to build onto in future stories as the newly revealed history and mer culture is expanded at the end.  This extends to both the dragons and the mer, land and sea, which makes the world building quite extensive as well as the mythology. I am so enthusiastic about both.

After starting with the foundation, Bellows sets forth her characters, again establishing each in their natural setting.  Jack/Seafoam emerging from the watery mer environs which is feeling cagelike to Peter, in his house on land, wistfully wanting to find that elusive “thing” he is meant to hoard.  Each main character’s personality is defined early.  The main basics there, loyaolty, generosity, ability to love, intelligence, laid out…while the layers and history will be revealed later as the story continues.

The chemistry and sheer sexiness between the two is marked by sadness and an overlay of foreknowledge that they clicked together immediately but now was all they had. I loved the relationship between them, sparkling, innocent in so many ways for them both.  Joyful in Jack’s exploration of the human   world, especially food.

But the author balances the light with the dark, at least for most of the story.  The ending?  Amazing, full of questions for some, happy endings for others, and the groundwork set for the next installment.  Was some of it dark?  Yes, given the nature of part of this story.  But it all flows so beautifully and it leaves you wanting more.

Elements I would love more knowledge of?  Those dragon eggs and dragon rearing.  Hopefully that will be included.  That is the mpreg here.  Eggs not babies perse. Considering the path the author took here with both species…. dragons and seahorses as species models, it makes perfect sense.  I will be seeking out more by this author and not just this series.

So, if you were like me, and unfamiliar with both this story and author, I absolutely recommend both.  Pick up Omega from the Ocean (Heron Manor Book 1) by Amy Bellows and be preapred for a fantasy story that will give you laughs, sniffles, a few white knuckle moments and the pleasure of knowing there  is more to come.

This was a nice start to a new series but as they often do there was a bit of the book spent on world building.  There were some little questions I still had at the end but there is the hope that they will be answered in the other books.  I loved these dragons, they are adorable and I think it is fascinating how they can shift into different forms and how different each dragon seems to be.

I really liked Toby, he is so sweet and really just wants to help people.  I hate seeing that he was being stifled in his job and then when Azaram was ignoring him.  Now, unfortunately Azaran didn’t do much to improve my opinion of him throughout the story.  I could see that he is dedicated to his family and what they do as dragon riders but I hated his assumption that a mate would be more work for him and how he continued to hurt Toby with his actions and I had a lot of trouble accepting his sudden flip of feelings towards Toby that finally got them together.  It seems there connection is solid but it was just one of those times where one action just doesn’t out weight the others.

Born of Air departs from the other three stories because Mark has already found and lost his mate.  In the three previous books, all three brothers needed to find their mates and had help courtesy of a tattoo and  an elf.  That  didn’t happen here. The connection that Mark and Quincy make is a familiar one and  one that Mark immediately rejects as impossible.

That impossibility will bring all the other brothers and their mates into this story to help the bonding and the relationship survive, a element I just love.

Another hallmark of this series?  The incendiary sex scenes between Quincy and Mark.  Hot, hot, hot.  Here and in every story.  These brothers have a love of kink and bdsm.  Each story should  come with its own fan or two.

I wish there had been more back history to  Mark’s previous relationship and it’s ending but perhaps that’s coming in the books yet to be released.  I hope so as I get the feeling Sean Michael is building up to some big event here when all the brothers have found their soulmates.

I don’t really feel these are standalone stories but one that builds upon the others so if you are new to the series start with Branded by Flames and work your way through all the books.  They are quick reads, very entertaining and very, very, hot!

I definitely  recommend them all.

With a rogue criminal targeting dragons and a flagging business, he needs to get his head on straight. And on top of that, Taran gets him pregnant.

 

What’s a guy to do?

 

This was an interesting story.  I’m not sure how they know who other paranormals are as they can’t seem to really sense them.  I understand this is the beginning of a new series, I think it leaves a lot of questions like; what is Annika and how did they quickly become such good friends, paranormals are hiding from humans but how is Taran hiding his pregnancy.

 

Taran and Nosko did a lot of flip flopping of their emotions near the beginning.  Nosko wasn’t looking for a mate but then in the next scene was always hoping for that loving connection.  Taran seemed all in and then pushed Nosko away and quickly jumps in again and they are suddenly having a baby.  I enjoyed the story and will probably read some more of the series but something was just missing from the building of the characters and story.

I am not quite sure how to describe this story.  James and Henry dated in high school and James deeply hurt Henry when he left without a word.  James is surprised when he meets Henry again at Searchlight Academy, but they don’t start out again on a good foot.

 

We get to see both characters’ points of view which helps understand both of their struggles and feelings.  This story mainly focuses on how dangerous dragons and other magical creatures are, which seemed a bit strange to me as I didn’t get that feeling about them in the first book in the series.  I had a hard time connecting with James and Henry as they both kept trying to keep secrets or wall themselves off from the other and acting totally opposite of their thoughts, it just didn’t jive for me.  Some of their problems stem from their earlier relationship, but also from how they have been hurt by others however little and unacknowledged it was.  I did like how James finally learns to stand up for himself in order to keep Henry safe.
