Review:  Direbound: A Dark Romantasy (The Wolves of Ruin Book 1) by Sable Sorensen

Direbound is the debut fantasy novel by Sable Sorensen, a pen name of two co-authors and friends creating their first fantasy/paranormal series. 

Direbound is, for the most part, a very successful romance fantasy thriller. Direbounds narrative is full of giant dire wolves, a horrific physically demanding mountain trial the main characters have to undergo. And for those that survive? They become part of a terrifying murderous academy of bonded pairs ,in a story that includes an enemies to lovers potential love story, missing children, and terror everywhere. 

There are many elements I found absolutely fascinating, things that held my attention and kept me riveted to this world and ongoing drama. 

I found I was totally involved in the main character of Meryn Cooper, alley cat street fighter of the Eastern Quarter who turns to the army when a family tragedy strikes.  Her unexpected journey into a new path than the one she envisioned for herself. She’s tough, well rounded, and credible in every aspect of her journey.  Well, except one. 

Her character, that of the twins, Isabel and Venna, one of the sisters is hearing impaired being a factor and the use of sign language in their stories, and the Rawbonded brutality of this story is a very well written aspect of Direbound. 

Another important aspect of the story is the bonding between the wolves and their human bondmates. It’s unlike other stories, it’s far more complex, pack like and brutal than other similar tales. The raw energy, high emotional intelligence of the wolves and constant tension and conflict between them is a great way to keep the reader engaged and guessing here. 

Survival isn’t guaranteed, and some of the characters are more relatable than others. 

There’s plenty of mystery and chaos and drama mixed in with the murderous conflicts and bonding events. 

The relationships between characters make and break the story for me. Yes to all the wolf/human dynamics. And those relationships between the humans fighting for survival and final bond rights. Those are believable. 

But outside of those? It’s that boyfriend aspect that drags everything down. 

Things that absolutely irritates me as a reader? A nickname of endearment like Kitten. One it’s has a displaced terminology aspect associated with it for the type of the locations and world foundation the author is creating here. However, more importantly, its usage indicates a different issue for the character, one I believe is telegraphed too soon.  See boyfriend that bothers me above. That entire element just isn’t as well written. 

But the story is a gripping tale and it keeps me invested in its journey. Especially when the ending is so dramatically shocking. 

That’s a great way to end. 

Now quickly let’s talk about why I think this book deserves a better reading. The PR should let it stand on its own merits. 

What this isn’t is what the PR releases desperately wants it to be “Fourth Wing meets The Hunger Games in dark action-packed fantasy series!” No, and I wish every heavy handed PR group would stop this kind of release approach. It does a disservice to the authors, readers and actually the book by not letting them see it on its own without a preconceived notion.

Direbound: A Dark Romantasy (The Wolves of Ruin Book 1) by Sable Sorensen is a terrific debut novel. It has some fantastic elements that make it stand out on its own right as a paranormal/fantasy thriller. This includes that great wolf bond aspect of the book. 

And a woman character that is strong and well developed in Meryn Cooper. 

I’m definitely recommending this book and looking forward to reading more in the series.

Review: What Blooms From Death by S.M. Gaither

Rating: 4.5

What Blooms From Death by S.M. Gaither is an excellent read. The description doesn’t really do justice to the incredible story and imagery that Gaither brings to the plot of a traumatized necromancer Princess ready to walk into hell to find a weapon that will get revenge on those who wronged her. 

The magical elements and symbols that make the world here are thoughtfully crafted ,with layers of natural elements, characters history, threads of emotional details built into each part of this fantastic piece of the story.  It’s in the beads of Nova’s bracelets and her dog, Phantom. It’s even in the leaves of the trees. 

Nova, her history, magic and journey through the underworld is just incredible. Especially as she’s accompanied by her dog, Phantom, a remarkable character on his own.  

Aleks, the Light King, and company are well drawn. Aleks is a compelling character with trauma of his own, and his story matches with that of Nova’s. 

Gaither storytelling includes some dynamic relationship twists and great action sequences. And an ending that borders on a cliffhanger.  It will certainly make you want that next book due out in December. 

Another terrific read in the fantasy fiction genre. A winner for lovers of the romance fantasy novel.

Review:  Witchwolf by Sam Burns and W. M. Fawkes

Normally I’m not one for the “virgin trope” storyline but Burns and Fawkes are two of my favorite authors and in their hands, it turns into Witchwolf, a delightful urban fantasy romance about a young man who in looking for a hot night out before a new job finds far more than he ever imagined.

Dakota Morris is the young man, recently graduated from college, and ready for his dream job and adventure. But before then? He wants that hot date and experience he’s denied himself by concentrating on his college and studies.

Burns and Fawkes have created a wonderful exuberant character in Dakota and then given him the absolutely best possible place to explore his new life and possibilities for his future. 

Of course he doesn’t expect his future to come with werewolves, mages and a ton of magic. 

The corporate world and culture the authors are laying down will be expanding with the next book , a chapter of which is included at the end of Witchwolf. 

But we get the outline of how the company works and its origins. Pack owned and operated but not exclusively employed by just werewolves.  This is a rich universe Burns and Fawkes are building and I’m hopeful that we get more than just two books here. 

Dakota’s story has mysteries and some drama associated with it.  I wish we could have had more details about his background but understand why that wasn’t given. There’s so much more here that cries out for greater detail and exploration, into the mage history and paranormal being rivalries. 

I’m hoping that future stories dive into this element.

The romance between Dakota and Alpha Ajax is hot, fun, and the dynamic between them makes us absolutely love this couple. Want to throttle Ajax occasionally because of his lack of communication skills but still Dakota makes up for it. 

Love the ending and energy going forward. But having the entire first chapter of Book 2 (great chapter too) and not the book? Argh.  

I will be watching out for that book next. 

A definite winner for lovers of urban fantasy and these authors.

Review:  The Vampire and the Case of the Wayward Werewolf by Heather G. Harris, Jilleen Dolbeare

I just love this series and group of characters. Everything about this is just amazing. New to me authors, Heather G. Harris and Jilleen Dolbeare have created a wonderful character in transplanted Londoner and newly created (not by consent) vampire, Elizabeth Octavia ‘But everyone calls me Bunny.’ Barrington. 

She’s escaped to the paranormal town of Portlock, Alaska as the assistant to the Sheriff there, to start a new life and, well, hide from her old one. And she’s brought along her rescue German Shepherd, Fluffy, whose outsize character is immediately endearing.

We’re introduced to a multitude of different personalities and paranormal types of beings as Bunny , Gunnar Johansen, the supernatural chief of police, the Nomo Sheriff’s Department, and Sidnee Gunnar’s mermaid daytime assistant.  

The story has great cases, investigative storylines, which gives us further insight into the town’s people, its history and the beginning of Bunny’s real commitment to Portlock and her new home.

I’ll admit I love this series and universe so much I read through books 1 through three in one day. Was getting ready to read The Vampire and the Case of the Cursed Canine, which is book 4 when I realized it was almost 3am. And my dog was saying enough, turn the lights off.

The character and relationship development is outstanding. The dynamic between the characters is so good and real that it’s hard to remember that these are paranormal people.

Seven books! Be still my heart! Way to make this reader incredibly happy. 

This is an absolute winner of a book and series. If you’re a lover of the paranormal world, mystery novels, and even a bit of a fated mates slow burn romance, here’s just the series for you. 

Highly recommended.

Review: Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry

In a recent group of highly anticipated and majorly media-hyped romance releases, Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry is one that lives up to its promise and excitement.

I’m unfamiliar with the author and wary or is it weary now of the various books being “super pushed , highly gushed about “ on many media platforms, especially prior to release.

These books are often compared to other books and series that are well established , very well written and already have enormous fan support, rightly or wrongly.  Maybe the soon to be published books fit in the genre, maybe they don’t. But pre-slotting them into a category does the book or author any favors. 

Rant over.  Onto this amazing book. 

Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry does a fantastic job of capturing a unique world of fantasy and horror, of Kingdoms and magical beasts, of princesses marrying to maintain a balance that’s not exactly what it seems. 

And princes to die for. 

The only thing I’m upset about is I don’t have the sequel in my hands already. 

Devney Perry’s world building is extraordinary, from the perilous waters their ships sail over and the creatures that lurk underneath to the realistic, harsh and beautiful nature of the Kingdom most of the novel takes place in. 

Perry’s descriptions and locations are visually stunning, imaginative and beautifully written. They capture our imagination and its people our hearts moment by moment, as Odessa learns more about her new life and the people around her. 

The characters, especially the main character of Odessa, is engaging and wonderfully layered, leaving her fully aware of her struggles and able to develop her strengths as she grows more aware of the challenges and realities of her situation. 

Less said due to spoilers about the male characters the better as they figure greatly in the narrative plot elements and twists. I’m sure many readers will see the surprises coming but it’s still a very real moment for the story and characters. And worked through with a terrific backstory. 

Is this “spicy” romance? That’s a term I feel is being used now for a wide range of sexual content in a romance novel, including some I find offensive like SA. This story is a long novel that features a true slow burn romance with a kiss and finally some sexual romance towards the end. That’s it. 

Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry has left plenty of room for the magical elements and mythology to expand with the next novel. I can’t wait to see what the author has planned for the characters and their journey.

Review:  Wild Knight (Midnight Empire: The Tower Book 1) by Annabel Chase

Wild Knight (Midnight Empire: The Tower Book 1) by Annabel Chase is a slow burn paranormal thriller romance. It has terrific world building, and some great elements to its series universe that make it even more exciting.

This world has been plunged into a forever darkness created by Earth’s super volcanoes all erupting at the same time, throwing enormous quantities of ash into the atmosphere that has created an endless night for the Earth. 

Vampires took advantage, taking control over the remaining regions, peoples, and spaces. And protecting their territories from the monsters still emerging from the craters in certain countries not under their control. 

The main protagonist is a magical warrior with a secret. That’s London Hayes, a Knight of Boudica, an all female group of soldiers who do everything from enforcing the laws to acquisition of items, taking jobs their male counterparts won’t. 

Forced by an unfortunate situation to accept a job for the ruling Vampire family, House Lewis, to find a mysterious stone, London now faces another challenge in vampire Prince Callan.

Chase sets a fast pace with the events of the story, the dark atmosphere of the world and several hidden secrets, all vying for the reader’s attention in the narrative. 

There’s also a menagerie of exotic creatures, including a three-headed Cerberus and a raven named Barnabas to help keep us invested in the story and London’s mystery. 

This is a complete series so I’m happily moving to the next book to see what happens going forward. 

I’m excited to make this author an auto read, and recommend the series to anyone who enjoys the trope.

Review:  Slouch Witch (The Lazy Girl’s Guide To Magic Book 1) by Helen Harper

My must read/auto buy list is growing. Put Helen Harper on there right now.  Every series I read from her just makes me appreciate her writing more .

Here’s another. And it’s due to the awesome main female character. 

That is 27 year old Ivy Wilde, someone outside the normal FMC outline in every conceivable way, from her outlook on exercise ( just no, she loves her plumpish short figure), avoidance of healthy habits and binging her favorite series.  She’s got magic but uses it on her terms. 

I love it when someone writes a woman character who’s not a crowd pleaser, an extrovert or someone who’s just wildly gorgeous.  Nope here we get a witch determined to be that kind of girl whose goal is to be an underachiever. Stay on that couch, eat those Cheetos, chat with your cat, be a part time Taxi driver and do the minimum each day to get by. Woohoo. It’s actually all in the title. 

Slouch Witch (The Lazy Girl’s Guide To Magic Book 1) by Helen Harper. I so love her. 

Ivy’s life changes when she’s mistaken for her out of town roommate, and ends up magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. Winter works for Arcane Branch, an investigative service for the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. None of which holds any real value for Ivy who wishes Winter and them gone.

What follows is a marvelous story about two hugely opposite personalities forced to work together on an epic case until the bond wears off.  It’s a funny, magical, thoughtfully crafted mystery about people, power dynamics, and expectations. 

The humor is everything. There’s scenes where I reread them just before bedtime so I could giggle myself off to sleep. Cats! 

If you’ve consorted with cats, been owned by one, then be prepared to howl at the cats here, especially Ivy’s familiar Brutus. 

But the investigations, especially as they start to let Ivy reveal so much about herself and her own recent experiences, are what power this fantastic novel. 

It finishes with a solid ending to this investigation but an open question as to whether the partnership between Ivy and Winter will resume or be over. 

Luckily there more released books to devour and I’m immediately heading forward.   Highly recommending this fabulous female character and author.

Review: Waifs And Strays (The Cat Lady Chronicles Book 1) by Helen Harper

Another new author and new book and series to explore in Waifs And Strays (The Cat Lady Chronicles Book 1) by Helen Harper.  

It’s a paranormal mystery thriller that has a 43 year old woman of mysterious origins and her 5 cats taking in a teenage werewolf boarder who’s soon kidnapped. That’s the basic premise. 

They live in a city/town, Coldstream, that’s home to most of the paranormal population and throughout the story, Harper takes us by way of the characters and events through the streets and places of this highly unusual city brimming with otherworldly beings living their typical daily lives. It’s a lively, well worn and believable city and works perfectly as the location and atmosphere of the series. 

Kit McCafferty’s a character whose life unfolds as the story progresses. She’s remarkable in so many ways. For the book and in series I enjoy reading. One is that Harper has written a retired woman, hugely successful in her former career but forced to take retirement due to her age.  

Most women in the novels I read are much younger so it’s an absolute joy to read a main character of her age and experience. And Harper’s dialogue for Kit’s character, inner monologue and the conversations that she has with others seem perfectly in sync with her personality. 

She’s absolutely phenomenal.

And holding secrets, all of which need to be disclosed during the course of the story. 

The cats , each of whom has its own unique identity, are just as important and well crafted.  So too are the people, paranormal characters that are equally powerful in their impact on the lives and multiple storylines Harper is threading through the pages here. 

Nick, the teenage werewolf is vulnerable and easily accessible to the reader.  Thane too is a good character but could use more depth.

This is a fast moving story, full of charm, surprises, and terrific elements.  There’s plenty of gruff emotional moments and satisfying action sequences, but really little romantic scenes. However there’s the potential for some in the future. 

And the ending is both an hilarious twist and perfect way to finish the story off.  Some people will be shaking their heads in total agreement. Yes indeed. 

I absolutely recommend this book. I’m heading to the next. If you’re interested in reading urban fantasy or paranormal mysteries, this is a great fit for you. 

The covers are ok. Not sure who the artist is but someone needs to tell them it’s ok to put a 40ish woman on the cover, wearing the clothes she wears in the story. While not all the readers are women , it’s likely most are . And would appreciate a better representation.

Goes for the series.

Review:  Dead to the World (Crossroads Queen Book 1) by Annabel Chase

Another new book, another new to me author , series and universe to explore. What fun!

Several great elements here that I love. Lorelei Clay is an enigma. She’s powerful but exactly where she draws the power from or what she is, well, here, there’s only the tiniest bit of clues. 

I love a good mystery. 

The town itself is another. Its history is part of the narrative and twines itself perfectly with the mystery and Lorelei’s investigation into the missing girl and her own discoveries of the community around her.

Chase has created in Lorelei Clay an intriguing older woman, one of tightly controlled emotions and magic. I instantly connected with her, the ghosts of the crumbling castle she’s renovating, and the weirdness of the small town community that keeps inserting itself into her isolation.

I can see myself gobbling up these books like the best book binge evah. 

Love the covers. It seems that the publisher has a similar style for its authors. 

Now onto the next. 

A definite winner.  Check it out. Oh and no romance, so no spice. But ghosts and a mystery. Great characters.

Review:  Nice Dragons Finish Last (Heartstrikers Book 1) by Rachel Aaron

After finishing Rachel Aaron’s DFZ series, I had to return to see how it all started. Before the DFZ was sentient, when dragons were outlawed, and the Lady of the Lake , the Algonquin herself was a highly manipulative, deadly spirit and Detroit was rising up again from all her destruction and under her authority. 

This is another wild, strange and fabulous ride.   Told in five instead of three books. 

It’s centered in Detroit, the non-sentient DFZ, and its focus is the powerful and numerous Heartstriker dragon family, in particular its youngest and smallest dragon, Julius.  Julius, a constant source of disappointment and anger to his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has been sealed into his human form and sent off to the DFZ to prove himself a true dragon or else. 

Julius the Good Dragon, which isn’t a compliment to dragons, is such an engaging character. The only one of his many siblings who is an anomaly in his personality, doesn’t want to hurt anyone, just loves gaming and people. 

Marci, a mage from Las Vegas, ends up in the DFZ after fleeing from some sort of terrible situation that leaves her without a home. 

These two are incredibly great characters and together they are the beginnings of a fabulous series arc and the basis for I’m betting the magical creatures and world building of the DFZ. 

Another hugely important character is Bob, the Heartstriker seer and Julius’s oldest brother.  We meet more siblings , each letter according to the clutch they hatched (?) in.  Bob being one but not the only oldest remaining child of Bethesda.  She’s not a good mother or parent FYI. 

I love Aaron as an author, the magical system is beautifully conceived, and it’s expanding to fit  this ever growing imaginative new universe.  Not even the established spirits themselves know what’s happening, or what the world is capable of doing.  Truly a gonzo magical fantasy.

But it’s also a very powerful story of empathy, emotional empowerment, and quiet bravery. Whether it’s on a human or dragon’s level. 

Julius deciding to be himself or Marci’s grief, or other characters stepping forward to help others. 

So many aspects of Nice Dragons Finish Last (Heartstrikers Book 1) by Rachel Aaron to love and appreciate, storylines and characters, relationships and themes. 

This author is a must read and these connected series as well. Highly recommended.
