A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: The Rancher’s Son (Montana #2) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

The Rancher's Son by RJ ScottA man without memories, and the cop who never gave up hope.

When he wakes up in hospital, the victim of a brutal beating, John Doe, has no memories of who he is or who hurt him. The cops can find nothing to identify him and he can’t remember anything to help… except the name Ethan and one recurring place from his dreams. Three words, and they’re not much, but it’s a start. Crooked Tree Ranch.

Cop, Ethan Allens has never stopped searching for his brother and his brother’s best friend who vanished. When a report lands on Ethan’s desk that may give new leads he jumps at the chance to follow them up. The man he finds isn’t his brother, but it’s someone who could maybe help him discover what happened ten years ago.

What neither man can know is that facing the very real demons of the past could very well destroy any kind of future they may think they have together.

This was an emotional drama with a beautiful romance that surpassed the erosions of time apart.  When Ethan got a lead on his missing brother, the Montana cop rushed to Chicago to identify the John Doe who had suffered such a bad beating that his memory failed. The only two words that seemed to mean anything were Ethan and Crooked Tree.  Ethan’s family owned Crooked Tree Ranch, so he had put in the family names and the ranch name as a flag for any missing persons throughout the US.  After waiting twelve years to hear anything, his hopes are dashed when he realizes the young man isn’t his younger brother, Justin.  But after a closer inspection of the bruised and swollen face, he realizes the man is Adam, Justin’s best friend, and Ethan’s one true love.

Last seen when they were nearly sixteen and Ethan was nearing eighteen, the young men disappeared without a trace.  It quickly becomes evident that being in Ethan’s presence is helping Adam heal in more ways than one.  Their feelings for each other have never been forgotten and are flaring strong again, despite the difficulty Ethan faces in trying to keep from pushing Adam and Adam’s difficulty in trying to keep from hurting Ethan when he remembers snatches of what might have happened to Justin.

Let’s just say that it’s a very well-developed story line, complete with danger and intrigue, and heavy on the romance, but not on the sex.  It’s the perfect combo, and I loved it so much I went right out and picked up book one and am hoping that after I devour that one, I can get book three.  I’m hooked on this series, and most definitely enjoyed the ending to this story though it isn’t a complete resolution to the mystery.  It did intrigue me enough to salivate over the need to get into book three quickly. Thankfully, the time frame between releases was short and it’s already out.

I highly recommend this one to all who love MM romance, cowboys, cops, mysterious amnesia victims, and of course, an RJ Scott story.

The cover by Meredith Russell depicts both MCs set against a scenic Montana background. Just right for this story.

An Alisa Review: Grand Opening (Kiss of Leather #4) by Morticia Knight

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

Grand OpeningThe men of Kiss of Leather celebrate a beginning, but will the price be another ending?

The grand opening of Kiss of Leather draws near and the pressure is on to make sure everything is completed for the big night. Master Josh is a perfectionist, so no detail is too small in order to enhance the quality of the prestigious club they’ve all worked so tirelessly on. Unfortunately, the endless demands on Josh’s time have caused him to forget the more important things in life.

David’s love for Master Josh is strong, but lately, that love has been constantly tested. How can a sub in a full-time D/s relationship serve a Master who’s never there? As things continue to deteriorate between him and Josh, David wonders if maybe his Master has tired of having to care for a sub 24/7.

By the time the grand opening arrives, Josh and David seem to have worked out their differences and David is hopeful for their future. The emotional collaring ceremony between Gavin and Kyle is a beautiful testament to the power of love. But when an unexpected party crasher intrudes on the evening’s festivities, the men are reminded that there are still too many unanswered questions related to Corey’s kidnapping.

More than ever, the men of Kiss of Leather need to stand united. Will Josh and David be able to do the same?

I really enjoyed this book; it gave us a look at the couples from the previous books but also a chance to look into Josh and David’s relationship.  Josh and David have been together for years and got to watch their friends fall in love around them.  However, their relationship seems to be going backward as the club gets closer to opening.  All this while still trying to find out everything in regards to Corey’s abuse and kidnapping makes it hard for the characters to work on their personal lives.

We got to see this story from many points of view, the previous couples and also Josh and David’s which helps to give the reader a chance to see how an existing relationship can look from all sides.  I could feel how David thought his life was falling apart and how devastated Josh was when he finally had a reality check for the state of his relationship.  I look forward to more books in this series while they work to find more information on Corey’s abuse.

The cover art is very nice and follows the pattern for the series.

A Paul B Review: Bear In Mind (The Bears of Falcon’s Ridge #2) by Susan E. Scott

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Bear In MindGabe Falcon has been seeing Blake whenever his art work took him into Atlanta.  He first met Blake five months ago.  Shortly before their first date, Gabe found out that a woman he had been seeing in Savannah was pregnant with his child.  As Gabe has been a love them and leave them type of guy, this changed the equation for Gabe.  Karen, the woman from Savannah, would not agree to marry him, nor did she want to keep the baby.  Gabe hoped he could convince Karen to give him the baby to raise.  But this possibly puts an end to any future for his relationship with Blake as he states that he did not want to have kids someday.

Blake works at an art gallery in Atlanta.  Through his job, he meets Gabe, a sexy Native American artist.  While he agrees to become friends with benefits with Gabe for whenever he was in town on business, lately Blake has wanted to take the relationship to the next level.  He fears that if informs Gabe of his decision that he will lose Gabe.  When he doesn’t hear from Gabe in a while, Blake figures that the relationship, such as it is, is dying a natural death.  After being laid off at his art gallery, Blake decides to pay his friend Connor and Conner’s new boyfriend Falcon a visit.

When Blake arrives at Connor’s place for his visit, he can’t help but notice the resemblance Falcon bares to his Gabe.  When he learns that Falcon is actually his last name, it confirms that the two are brothers and in fact twins.  Blake then learns that Gabe is in Savannah for the birth of his own twins.  Blake is sure he does not want to be a home wrecker and wonders where he fits into Gabe’s new life.  He will certainly be busy with the new additions along with possibly their mother, leaving him alone.  Is there any hope for a life with Gabe and his kids?

This is the second book in the Bears of Falcon’s Ridge series.  I missed out on the first one but that did not detract much from the story.  (The first book was the story of Connor and Falcon.)  In this book, Gabe and Falcon being bear shifters is treated almost like they had brown eyes or were Native American, just another part of their being.  The only shifting that took place happened off page.

Both men seem to want their relationship to develop further but are both afraid but telling the other of their desire that they will lose them.  Only after the subtle help of Connor after Gabe brings the babies home do the men come to realize that they both want the same thing.  I plan on catching up with the first book and look forward to others in the series.

The cover by Eden Connor fits the character of Gabe well.  A shirtless Native American male with long dark hair is standing in front of a forest scene.  It is just how I would picture Gabe as he was described.

A Barb Release Day Review: Empty Net (Scoring Chances #4) by Avon Gale

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Empty Net by Avon GaleSpartanburg Spitfires’ goalie and captain Isaac Drake ended last season with an unexpected trip to the playoffs. He’s found a home and family with his coach and mentor, Misha Samarin, and he’s looking forward to making a serious run for the Kelly Cup. But things take an interesting turn when Isaac’s archnemesis, Laurent St. Savoy, is traded to the Spitfires. After Laurent’s despicable behavior in the playoffs last year, Isaac wants nothing to do with him – no matter how gorgeous he is. But that changes when Isaac discovers the reason for Laurent’s attitude.

Laurent St. Savoy grew up the only son of a legendary NHL goalie in a household rife with abuse, constantly treated like a disappointment on and off the ice. When a desperate attempt to escape his father’s tyranny sends him to the Spitfires, the last thing Laurent wants is to make friends. But there’s something about Isaac Drake that he can’t resist, and Laurent has an opportunity to explore his sexuality for the first time, but he’s cracking under end-of-the season pressures. When facing the playoffs and a rivalry turned personal vendetta, Isaac’s not sure he’s enough to hold Laurent—or their relationship—together.

Please be advised: This book does contain some non-graphic references to past childhood physical/emotional abuse as well as issues relating to ED (bulimia and restricted eating, disordered thoughts about eating).

From the beginning, Laurent St. Savoy, the character I thought for sure I would hate, burrowed into my heart and found his home.  Oh, that poor young man! My heart just bled for him.  The author did an excellent job sketching his character immediately and then filling it in with details of his history of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his father, famous hockey player and now coach of the Asheville team, Denis St. Savoy.

Laurent developed strong defense mechanisms in his early years and learned never to show his true feelings. We didn’t know last year, when he spit on Isaac in the playoffs, he was really dying about it on the inside. When he’s traded to the Spitfires as Isaac Drake’s backup goalie, the rivalry should be intense, but instead, after an early flare-up, Isaac discovers one of Laurent’s secrets.  Laurent has scars—on his back and in his mind—scars that are not so easy to explain.  But Isaac feels an innate need to comfort Laurent, and together they begin to explore what Laurent needs.

Along the way, his eating disorder is discovered, his emotional abuse at the hands of his father, and his hatred for hockey—all unexpected and all difficult to overcome, but not impossible to work through.  With Isaac by his side, Laurent begins to make baby steps toward recovery.

This story has so much going for it, including a lot of air time for Misha and Matt, Isaac’s coaches and the men he boards with. We see new sides to Misha and to their relationship as well as being present for Laurent’s discovery of sex and that what was missing all along was an emotional bond with another person.  The author explores disordered eating and provides information on therapeutic treatment, both in the story, and in the Afterword.

The road to emotional health is long for Laurent, and it’s a huge struggle to make the strides he makes over the course of this story. The author gives us a very easy-to-hate character in Denis St. Savoy, but she also gives us an opportunity for revenge as Laurent takes his final step to break his relationship with the man who treated him so despicably during his life.

To be honest, the whole series is amazing. Each book has brought unique characters in unique situations and a warm and satisfying ending. This one is no different in that way, but it is just so much more.  It’s more intense, more emotional, and more memorable, IMHO.  It’s certainly one I can easily recommend without any hesitation at all.

The cover by Aaron Anderson is also one of the most attractive I’ve seen all year.  Blue-tinted, it depicts an empty hockey net surrounded by ice and with lightning strikes in the background.  When I squint my eyes, I can see ghostlike outlines of players in the lines formed by the lightning—whether intentional or just my imagination, I’m not sure, but the overall effect is very impressive.

Excerpt 4: Lord of a Thousand Steps by Tara Lain

Excerpt Title: Buddies

Braden picked up his glass and turned it in his hands. He’d been the recipient of a rebound blowjob. He slowly released his breath. Better than no blowjob at all, I guess. “I’m so sorry this happened to you.”

“Yeah. Well, maybe it’ll help me grow up and stop looking for romance on every street corner, you know? Just about the time I moved in with my brother, he fell for Ken, and I think that warped my perspective. They’re so happy. But I guess I haven’t kissed enough frogs yet.”

Braden sucked wine up his nose and gargled. “Mmft, I shall cherish my new amphibian category.” Although it kind of stung.

“Oh, hell no. That’s not what I meant.” He shook his head wildly. “Actually, you’re the antiamphibian.”

Braden laughed. “Okay, explain.”

“I mean, you’re the shoot-for-the-moon guy. The prince’s prince. But you’re so far out of my league, you won’t tempt me to hope.” He grinned. “I can be your secret blowjob guy, your fuck buddy, while you’re getting yourself out of your marriage. You won’t have to worry about some random spy photographer catching you in the throes with me. Hell, if they see us together, you have a perfect reason to be with me. Combination design mentee and babysitter.”

Braden’s head spun. This made weird sense—and gave him a bellyache. “What do you get out of it?”

“Are you kidding? Sex with the hottest dude on two feet—and a break from fairy-tale romance.”

His mouth opened—and closed. Try again. “Uh, are you sure about this?”

Ian’s grin faded. “Okay, I’m more beat-up than I’m letting on. But I really like you. If we go into this with eyes open and solemnly promise that when one of us finds a realistic boyfriend we can still work together, then I’m in. But seriously, I don’t want to jeopardize my job. I love working for Lord and Kendrick. If you think I’m kidding myself, say so.”

Kidding? Fuck, they’d both lost their minds.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Wide Open Spaces (States of Love) by Renee Stevens

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5

Wide Open Spaces by Renee StevensDevon fled Wyoming as soon as he turned eighteen, leaving behind his high school love, Levi. After six years in the big city, Devon returns to his hometown. Not much has changed, except that Levi is no longer in the closet. He’s also single and living his dream—managing the local wild horse population. Both of them are very interested in picking up where they left off, but Devon is no more ready to reveal his orientation than he was as a teenager.

No one is going to shove Levi back in the closet—not even Devon. For a relationship to work, they’ll have to put the past behind them and find the courage to face the future as who they really are—a couple in love. But Devon doesn’t know if he’s strong enough. Maybe Levi would be better off without him—and his hang-ups.

This was a sweet story, but almost too sweet.  Devon returns to his small hometown in Wyoming because life in the big city no longer appeals to him. He left home after high school six years before, and he left behind his first love, Levi.  Once he’s back, he quickly learns Levi completed college and now works rescuing wild mustangs, and he came out a few years before when he brought home his boyfriend on a college break.

Devon would love to see Levi, but he’s afraid his high school jock friends and his new employer, a mining operation, would make his life hell if they determined he was gay too. He is, and he was out for the past six years in Washington, but doesn’t want to be out here.  When he meets up with Levi, it’s evident that their chemistry is still there, so he plans to take it slowly as he gets to know the man he always loved.

They do take things slowly, but Devon is such a jerk about staying in the closet that eventually Levi clues in to the fact that they never go out in public, and he gives Devon an ultimatum (thank God!).  Devon is still a wuss, even when he finally determines that there’s nothing he’d do to hurt Levi and wins him back.  To be honest, I couldn’t believe how juvenile his behavior was, especially given the fact that he’s been out for six years.  And Levi was way too nice to the jerk. Really? He should have put his foot down from the beginning.  Also, there was no real angst surrounding the fact that Devon ran off six years before. They smoothly transitioned back together, even though there had been no contact during that time.

Overall, although I somewhat liked the story, mostly my “like” was centered around Levi and around the early parts of the story before I realized what a jerk Devon was.  Also, it felt a little too juvenile, and the resolution didn’t come until the end. And then it just ended—there should have been a bit more of a resolution toward their future as a couple.  So, I have to give it 2.5 stars because I thought it was a minimum of “okay” with a little bit of “like” as a booster.

The cover by Maria Fanning is okay, featuring a close-up of a muscular man’s chest with another (less than sexy and unappealing man) in the background and both superimposed over a scene of grazing horses.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Priddy’s Tale by Harper Fox

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Priddy's Tale by Harper FoxWhat doesn’t kill you sometimes makes you wish it had…

Priddy’s a lost soul in a part of Cornwall the tourists don’t get to see. He’s young, sweet-natured and gorgeous, but that’s not enough to achieve escape velocity from his deadbeat village and rotten family life.

He’s a drifter and a dreamer, and self-preservation isn’t his strong suit. An accidental overdose of a nightclub high leaves him fractured, hallucinating, too many vital circuits fried to function in a tough world. When a friend offers him winter work in a lighthouse – nothing to do but press the occasional button and keep the windows clean – he gratefully accepts.

His plans to live quietly and stay out of trouble don’t last very long. A ferocious Atlantic storm washes a stranger to Priddy’s lonely shore. For a shipwrecked sailor, the new arrival seems very composed. He’s also handsome as hell, debonair, and completely unconcerned by Priddy’s dreadful past.

Priddy has almost given up on the prospect of any kind of friendship, and a new boyfriend – let alone a six-foot beauty with eerily good swimming skills – out of the question entirely. But Merou seems to see undreamed-of promise in Priddy, and when they hit the water together, Priddy has to adapt to Merou’s potentials too, and fast. His lover from the sea might be a mere mortal from the waist up, but south of that line…

Far-flung west Cornwall has a hundred mermaid tales. Priddy’s loved the stories all his life. Now he has to face up to a wildly impossible truth. Merou’s life depends upon his courage and strength, and if Priddy can only find his way in the extraordinary world opening up all around him, all the ocean and a human lifetime needn’t be enough to contain the love between merman and mortal.

Harper Fox is by far the best weaver of tales I’ve had the pleasure of reading. I have one other favorite who is an excellent storyteller, but Harper’s tales are just that: the sort of tales I would imagine would survive history in the telling from one generation to the next. There’s a certain atmosphere present throughout the story, making me almost feel as if I’m an observer in a pub on the Cornish Coast as I listen to a wise old sailor tell us about Priddy and his merman, Merou.

Priddy suffered brain damage from overusing certain drugs when he was already drunk and not mindful of his decisions. His best friend, Kit, holds himself to blame, so when he leaves for college, he arranges a job for Priddy, manning his grandfather’s lighthouse. The job suits Priddy well as he takes his meds and slowly goes about his tasks. He’s even starting to feel a bit stronger and more content, when one night he spots a boat in trouble, and by the time he gets to shore, he only sees one head bobbing in the water.

He rushes in to help the drowning man, nearly drowning himself, and is shocked when the man seems to be stronger than he is and ends up rescuing him. Unfortunately, he’s touched the man—a man who he later finds out is a merman—and because he touched him, the man takes on human form (complete with External John Thomas!) and is able to stay “topside” for a while.  When the man named Merou suddenly begins to change back and is in danger of dying from being on land, Priddy manages to find the strength to get him back in the water, thereby saving his life.

Through a series of on-land and in-sea adventures, the two become close and Priddy is granted a wish for saving Merou’s life, a wish that restores his mental abilities. But the side effect is his development of gills and an eventual change takes place that neither of them had asked for.  In the meantime, Kit has fallen in love with one of his professors, one who has a keen interest in mermaids, and the two show up at the lighthouse, bringing with them more havoc than help when the professor reveals his true nature.

I’m trying hard not to give anything away, while at the same time, I’m trying to give a brief overview of the grand scope of this story. All his life he’s heard legends of mermaids in that area of the coast so imagine Priddy’s surprise when he realizes they aren’t just a figment of old men’s imaginations.  This story comes complete with mystery and suspense, romance and danger, and a future for both Priddy and Kit that neither man could have envisioned.

I loved the world-building in this story, the three-dimensional characters, and the plausible explanations for things previously thought to be the product of a fertile imagination.  And I loved the love—the love between two men that will survive to infinity and the love of one friend for another—a love that will survive time as a new tale is woven that will be told for future generations to come.

Honestly? There was nothing about this story I didn’t like, except perhaps for the professor, and he was the perfect villain so no problems there.  I recommend this to all lovers of fantasy, and for those who have had a fascination with mermaids, mermen, and other mythical sea creatures.  Of course, if you love a good tale to be heard around a fire during a cold winter night, this story is just the one to meet your expectations.

The cover depicts Merou in his human form, wrapped in one of Priddy’s towels, and is very nicely done.

An Alisa Review: Hunger (Chicken Ranch #1) by Amanda Young

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Hunger- chicken Ranch kindleDisowned and cast out of his home, eighteen year old Declan Mayo turns to the only thing he can think of to help him get back on his feet. Working at Chicken Ranch, a rural brothel that caters to gay men, seems like the perfect solution. He isn’t about to let a lack of sexual experience stop him from taking what he sees as his only way off the streets.

Falling in love with one of his clients wasn’t in the game plan, but Declan can’t seem to help himself. Killian Hamilton is sweet and kind, with a stutter Declan can’t help but find adorable. Surely, if anyone could overlook Declan’s choice of employment, it would be a kindhearted man like Killian.

What Declan doesn’t count on is Killian’s connection to one of the brothel’s regular clients, or the way his love life is about to blow up in his face.

Amanda Young did a nice job with this story.  Declan is forced to find a way to support himself when he is kicked out of his home for being gay and when he sees no other choice he goes to Chicken Ranch for a job.  Killian goes to Chicken Ranch hoping to get off without the awkwardness of trying to pick someone up, but finds something much better.

I loved both of these characters.  Both were innocent in their own way, Declan by age and experience and Killian by his shyness and lack of social experience.  It was easy to connect with these characters and see their relationship slowly start to build after they see each other months after Killian visited the ranch.

The cover art is nice and caught my eye.

Series: Chicken Ranch Gentleman’s Club #1

A MelanieM Review: Magnified (Magnified #1) by Mell Eight

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Magnified by Mell EightOn her deathbed, Yani’s Great Grandmother reveals she has one last story from her past to tell: that of his Great Uncle Yakov, who helped her survive the Nazis. It’s a story of vampires and werewolves he can scarcely believe—and in the wake of his Great Grandmother’s death, Yani realizes the story is far from over.

The world of vampires and werewolves isn’t a safe place for a human, even one with Yani’s unusual family history. With danger at his door, the smart thing would be to run, but much like his Great Grandmother Yani has never been very good at running away—especially with his loved ones and the whole world at stake.

Magnified is the first in a new series by Mell Eight and a most unusual series its starting out to be.  A supernatural tale, it has all the typical elements one expects to find such as vampires, werewolves, succubi and more but one of its main characters and an important secondary character are Eastern European Jews, one of whom barely escaped the trains and gas chambers of WWII.  How they did it and their Jewish traditions they carry with them always as part of who they are is a central element to this story and I expect of this series.

I found this whole aspect of the story a wonderful layer not often found in my stories (see Astrid Amara’s Carol of the Bellskis (Bellskis, #1) among others). Not only does Mell Eight use Yani’s contemporary family’s religious celebrations as part of her important need for us to understand how strong this family is and their ties to each other and their faith but later on starts to pull in other threads that deepens the religious element when a mage with links to Kabbalah appears.

We start off the story as Yani’s great grandmother is telling the story of her childhood. Its the 1940’s and the swift move by the Nazis is occurring as they round up Jews and move them to the internments camps and the ovens.  We are propelled into these awful times and a heartrending if sometimes confusing narrative, one that quickly becomes clearer by the page.

The timeline moves along quickly as Yani ages from a young boy to a young man of college age.  The jumps in time are handled easily and are necessary to get to the action required by the meat of the story.

That’s the introduction of the world of vampires, werewolves etc to our young student.  Its an explosive one and one that was my only main issue here.  I would have expected a much larger reaction from Yani.  His reaction felt almost anti-climatic after all he went through. And it continued to bother me throughout the rest of the story.

There is a lot that the author is packing in here.  There are two main couples that are intended to flow into the next story and carry on the series.  It was almost too much for this book to handle.  We really didn’t get a background on the secondary couple, perhaps that’s coming in the next book.  But they had such an important part to play here that they came off less substantial without that background.

There is a very scary villain here, a true monster. One I can’t wait to see taken down.  I wonder how many books its going to take?  I will be there for every one.

Mell Eight packed a lot into this first story.  Religion, family, romance, mystery, horror…its a writer’s cornucopia and it almost exploded the seams of the story on element overload.  So much here to absorb that it got confusing at times. But in the end, Mell Eight pulled it off…sort of as there is a HFN ending.   I recommend this unusual story, its quite a ride even though I’m not quite sure where we’re going yet.

Cover by Aisha Akeju‘s cover contains relevant objects to the story.  I’m just not a fan of these simplified covers, just they don’t draw me in.
