A VVivacious Release Day Review: Coin of the Realm by Michael Murphy

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

Coin of the RealmTimothy is struggling to make ends meet as he tries to put himself through college. When one after the other jobs don’t pan out, Timothy ends up becoming an escort.

Then one day he gets called on to service a high profile guy. But just how powerful is this guy? Timothy is just about to find out how much…

Timothy finds himself in a fairy tale only to realise that every good fairy tale has behind it an equally evil villain.

Coin of the Realm is a pretty straightforward story. It is also quite predictable only because two-thirds of the book is revealed in the blurb itself. The first hundred plus pages of this book basically rehashes everything that you already know if you have read the blurb.

This book is extremely well written and well planned. Time is devoted to every aspect of the story but since a lot of the story progression is revealed in the blurb, it takes some time before the story becomes less predictable and more interesting.

What I liked about this book were its characters Jared, Timothy and Agent Robinson. The characters are fleshed out and since the story spends quite a bit of pages developing the main relationship, it doesn’t feel rushed or implausible. Personally the characters are the best part of this book.

Because of the circumstances most of Jared and Timothy’s relationship is mediated by way of Agent Robinson and Agent Robinson kind of out-shines the MCs at points in this story. I loved Robinson and I loved how hard he works to get Jared and Timothy’s relationship back on track and how he ran interference for these two.

I would have liked a bit more focus on the element of power which was introduced in this story. We are talking about the most powerful man in the free world and he never, even once, wonders if his lover loves him just because of his power. I mean you can view it from a million angles but you can’t just ignore the appeal of power, the fact that power makes people infinitely more desirable than they may be.

During their first encounter there is this palpable air of power that permeates the atmosphere but it is subsequently unrealistically toned down.  I mean I would have liked more awe, much more awe and it would have been nice to see people, kind of, making, a bit of, a fool of themselves around someone with that much power. I mean a little sycophantic behaviour was a definite requirement.

But for the most part of this book the power element is sorely lacking till the person in question ends up feeling just like everyone else, which I agree he is, but it would have been nice to see the reactions of new people meeting him contrasted with the reactions of those who were closer to him. Basically everyone ends up him treating him like just another person and not the most powerful man in the free world.

This absence of power would have been completely okay except for the fact that this book kind of hinges on Jared’s power. Also the fact that Jared is such an admirable human being maybe makes it harder for him to exercise such great power without appearing at least a bit evil. So in other words the author sacrifices power in lieu of Jared’s character development. But truthfully if this element had been explored more this book could have been one of a kind.

I feel like this book has a lot of elements and if justice had been done to at least a few crucial elements this book would have been amazing instead of the sweet one time read it turns out to be.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Real World (Love is Blind #2) by B.A. Tortuga

Rating: 4.75 stars rounding up to 5 out of 5

Real WorldDan White is trying to acclimate to civilian life after a long career in the military with multiple combat deployments.

Now he’s home in the Austin area, living with his brother Dixon, Dixon’s husband, Audie, and their two nine-year-olds. During the New Year celebration, Dan meets Abraham Weldon, and the connection is instant.

There’s a kiss. There’s a dance. There’s a proposition.

Then Dan finds out Weldon is bisexual.

And a dad.

With five kids. Five kids, one of whom is a blind fifteen-year-old.

Weldon has been in love twice in his life—with his high school best friend, Blake, and with his wife, Krista, who he met in a Dairy Queen as she was crying over a positive pregnancy test. Love number three hits Weldon like a hammer when he meets Dan.

But since Dan isn’t interested in a guy with kids, they might only get one night together.

When I read Ever the Same (Love is Blind #1), I fell in love with the families and characters that B.A. Tortuga created for that story.  I certainly couldn’t wait for this series to continue. Real World (Love is Blind #2) brings us back to those families and couples with Dan White, ex soldier adjusting to civilian life and brother to Dixon, blind musician who we met in the first story.  Dan’s not adjusting very well, but he’s living with Dix and his husband Audie and their kids so civilian life is up front and in his face every day.    So are the connections to Dix and Audie’s friends and the community which brings a meeting to Weldon and a “oh so hot we might combust” connection.  Until reality sets in when information is exchanged and Dan finds out that Weldon is a dad of five and bisexual, way more than a man who feels he’s not ready for commitment can handle, leaving a very disappointed Weldon in his wake.

How I love a story where a couple must over come obstacles, inner obstacles they create for themselves, in order to be together.  This story is chock full of those. Here in Real World those barriers feel so completely authentic and believable when it comes to the characters who are trying to work through their feelings and doubts about their relationship and walls they built up around themselves.  And no one here has walls higher than Dan White.  Walls against dating bisexual men, walls against men with families, and one by one…we watch those barriers fall…prey to the charm and love of Weldon and his brood of kids.  What a group of kids they are too.  Snarky, drama filled, lovable, not so lovable, crying, every adjective you want to throw in here.  In short, a very realistic family of children that will grab at your heart, especially the eldest who will have his own heartrending story thread to go through.

I haven’t forgotten Weldon.  That character…well, he’s a man that will tug at you all the way through the story.  He’s a loving father, a vulnerable man, who’s trying to balance his families needs with his own. You just end up aching for him when Dan turns away time and again.  Trust me…there are places you will want to shake that man!  Isn’t that great writing?  Yes, I say it is.

B.A. Tortuga has a way, whether its by her ear for the vernacular or locale or just knowing people and family dynamics, of being able to create characters that are so real, so believable that they pull you into their story and lives that you ache for them, get mad at them, yes, want to shake them and finally rejoice in their happiness at the end when they pull together and realize they can make it as a couple and as a family.  That happens here in Real World, a book I loved even better than the first story in the series.  That’s saying a lot.

Do I recommend this story?  Absolutely.  Grab it up and the first in the series too.  I can’t imagine what’s coming next but I know I can’t wait to see what develops.  There are more White boys although they are supposedly straight.  Hmmm.  We’ll see.

Cover art by Bree Archer. I love this cover.  Its just perfect for the story and its heartwarming too.

A MelanieM Review: Blind Date by Kay Doherty

Rating: 3.75 rounded up to 4 stars out of 5

Blind DateDekker Callan is content with his life though he knows something is missing. Wanting the kind of love his friends share with their partners, Dekker is talked into taking part in a modeling and dating show as part of a fundraiser. He immediately falls in love with the anonymous, sexy voice on the other side of the wall, but fate has a surprise in store–his mystery man isn’t single.

Slade Gannon wasn’t supposed to take part in the dating show. That spot was for his roommate, Phil, who becomes ill and asks Slade to take his place. Slade has just recently gone through a breakup with his cheating boyfriend, George. Shocked and pleased when he wins the interest of handsome Dekker Callan, before he can go on the obligatory blind date, his ex asks for a second chance. Believing Dekker can’t possibly be as good on the inside as he looks on the outside, Slade agrees.

Dekker and Slade hit it off immediately, drawn to each other despite Slade being involved with someone else. They finally get their opportunity to be together when Slade finds out his boyfriend is still cheating, but just as they seem to discover the happiness they’ve been waiting for, George throws them one last hurdle—and this one may prove to be insurmountable.

Blind Date by Kay Doherty was an enjoyable fun contemporary romance, that starts off with a blind date that goes incredibly right and then incredibly wrong.  What fun!

Dekker Callan’s best friend talks him into a charity modeling show and sort of Dating Game fundraiser.  I thought this was a nice element and its handled with a light and sexy touch by the author.  You don’t get to see the men just as Dekker doesn’t.  Just here their questions and listen to Dekker’s mention descriptions of their voices and how they make him feel.  Delicious.

Then comes his choice and date, Slade.  Its going well until both the reader and Dekker find out that Slade went back to his cheating ex, something that makes us all extremely unhappy.  Then the waffling begins.  Will Slade go back permanently or won’t he?  Will Dekker will out or won’t he?  Dekker is such a terrific character that its a bit of a no brainer here.  He’s charming, outgoing, owns his own Adult Toy Business.  Yes, he’s a catch.  Plus he’s gorgeous.  Slade however is someone I wished had a little more…gumption or backbone or something.  I’m not sure what exactly. But the dithering here lasted a little too  long in several passages for me to be completely on Slade’s side.  This is without spoilers.

However, love is not without bumps and larger hurdles, and this author gave this couple their fill.  They survived them, and their romance and ending came together just as it should.  I got to see Dekker happy and his Slade and that’s all that counted in the end.

Did I enjoy this story? Absolutely.  I went to check to see if there were other stories about the secondary characters here because they were so entertaining and worth their own tales.  Did I find any? No, but I hope that means that this first time author is intending to bring more stories out, starting with this circle of friends I thoroughly adored.  I can’t wait to see what Kay Doherty writes next.

Cover art is vibrant and eye-catching although a little too generic for me for the storyline.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Running Hot by Yolande Kleinn

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Running HotKurt Trench loves running a successful auto repair shop with his twin sister Lena. Lately loyal customer Shane Dolan has been coming around more often, and Kurt assumes it’s because of his sister. While Kurt wouldn’t dream of coming between them, he can’t help being drawn to Shane himself…. Or thinking about him in ways he definitely shouldn’t.

One night everything changes. Kurt doesn’t reciprocate Shane’s kiss—he’s got no intention of stealing his sister’s man—but when he tells Lena what happened, she can’t believe how thick her brother is. She’s not the reason Shane’s been coming around the garage, and Kurt and Shane have more in common than a love of classic muscle cars. Now it’s on Kurt to make the next move, assuming he hasn’t blown his chance for good.

This was a nice short story.  Kurt is completely clueless in Shane’s attraction to him and tries as hard as he can to keep him at an arm’s length to keep from getting hurt.  Kurt desires a partner, but isn’t willing to possibly hurt his sister for that to happen.

Through Kurt’s eyes it is easy to see how he could have been confused in Shane’s intentions when nothing is ever said.  Lena and Shane just assume that Kurt will know what is going on but Kurt is a bit bullheaded and refuses to see what he doesn’t think is there.  Kurt’s stubbornness hurts himself more than anyone else, but he owns up to his mistakes once he realizes the truth which helped him a bit in my eyes.

Cover art by LC Chase is nice and works well for this story.

An Ali Release Day Review: Poison Tongue (Afflicted Souls #1) by Nash Summers

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Poison TongueLevi Bell can see a person’s soul just by looking into their eyes. In Monroe Poirier’s eyes, he sees the devil himself.

When Monroe moves back to the small Southern town of Malcome, Levi is repelled by the darkness of the stranger’s soul. But Levi is cursed to love things dark and wicked, and he’s seduced each time he looks into Monroe’s eyes—and drawn to the swamp behind the old Poirier house.

As strange occurrences begin to happen when shadows and visions visit him in the night, Levi sees a flicker of something good in Monroe’s soul. But the need to submerge himself in the swamp’s murky waters grows stronger as Levi’s desire for Monroe becomes unbearable.

In his struggles to help Monroe save his soul, Levi will have to decide if it’s worth losing his own.

There’s not much I love more than a good gothic romance and this book made me very happy. The author did a great job of setting the atmosphere in this story. There are all the things a good Southern gothic should have.  A creepy, decaying house, an even more creepy swamp, terrible nightmares. a curse, a supernatural presence and a love interest that may be evil himself.
Despite Levi’s struggles with the ever increasing dreams of his own demise he still can’t stay away from Monroe.  Monroe is hated by the entire town and he is bullied and picked on.  Levi doesn’t know much about what happened when Monroe lived there before but he knows that Monroe’s soul is covered in black and that no matter what common sense tells him, he can’t stay away.  He doesn’t know if he’ll be Monroe’s salvation or if Monroe will lead him to his doom.  Most of the time he finds he doesn’t care.
The storytelling and pacing were excellent and I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book.  It wasn’t scary per se but it kept me completely focused.  I loved how well the world building was done.  I felt like I was right there with Levi.  Both Levi and Monroe were unique characters and I liked them both.  I felt Levi’s sense of fear around Monroe at the beginning but soon became intrigued with him myself.  The are three prominent side characters and they held interesting roles. There was a mystery surrounding one of them that I never figured out until it was explained.  The romance aspect is a slow burn with a lovely ending.
This was one of the more unique stories I’ve read this year and I imagine it will end up in my top 10.  I can’t say enough good things about it.  This is a definite recommend from me.

Excerpt

Stupid phone. Jordan told me to call him two weeks ago. Two weeks and I haven’t mustered the courage to call. How can I tell him I want him back in my life, but I have to rebuild my life first? How can I ask him to put his life on hold until then, when I don’t know if it will take days, months, or years?

I put down the phone and go to get my bike. Even if I change everything else in my life, I still need to get some exercise.

Thirty minutes later, I reach my destination. It’s a closed-down factory not far from the docks. The fence has a hole in it, right where my contact told me. I go through it and hide my bike behind a bush. The door is unlocked, as I’d expected. I enter and hear voices. And funny noises. I walk down the hall to the right, as instructed, and emerge in a wide warehouse space. Machines are rusting everywhere. Small ones are scattered around seemingly haphazardly, some no bigger than a small table and others the size of a car. The biggest ones, the size of small houses, are neatly aligned, occupying a whole side of the place. Some of the casings are missing, probably eaten by rust, revealing wheels and chains crisscrossing inside the beasts. A web of gangways had been built around and above them, probably to help maintain them. These are now rusting away, with some parts missing.

Standing on top of the nearest machine, a boy, who looks barely sixteen, sits gazing down at me.

He whistles and the place becomes quiet. From behind the machines, a dozen people appear. There are four girls, and two of the guys look to be older than me, though not by much. Most of them are wearing cargo pants and hoodies; a few have on shorts and T-shirts. The only thing missing is guns. With them, they would look like a gang.

A girl walks over to me. She’s short, with brown hair tied in a ponytail. She’s wearing a dirty white skintight top and a cap. “Matt?”

I nod. “Gaby, I suppose?”

We shake hands. She turns to the group. “This is Matt, the guy I told you about.”

A boy comes forward and scrutinizes me.

He turns to Gaby. “Are you sure he won’t cause us any problems?”

I can’t help smiling at the rebuke.

Gaby keeps a straight face. “He’s the one who busted those dirty cops three years ago. Trust me, he won’t be a problem.”

This wipes the smile off my face. I’d rather leave that feat in the past. However, it gets me a few awed stares from the others around us.

“Too bad he didn’t get rid of the clean ones, too,” the kid grumbles, walking back a few steps.

“Did you take me in because of that?” I ask Gaby.

She shakes her head. “No. Don’t worry about it. But the cops don’t appreciate what we do. They can sometimes cause us trouble. I told you about it. If you don’t like it, you can go away.”

I stifle a snort. “Trust me, I’ve done worse!”

Book Trailer

Excerpt

THE ALARM WAS ringing. Joel slammed it off before it could do any damage. Normally a captain’s work was never done and he would have a list of things he needed to check before he made it to the mess for breakfast. But the mining season was coming to a close. Quality minerals filled his cargo hold, and he wasn’t even going to need to haggle for a good price this time. The ship was running, the crew were optimistic, and the man asleep beside him had done things last night Joel wouldn’t have thought were possible.

Sean had been a regular feature in Joel’s quarters since the young doctor had gotten shot. Joel ran his fingers over Sean’s bare, milk-white torso, allowing the tips to skate around the fresh scarring on his stomach. The memories surrounding the injury were troubling, but from those dark days came something Joel had never expected. Him and Sean. It was still new; barely two weeks if he didn’t count the long period of sexual tension before they got together.

Never in all his years sailing Ariel did he think he would end up sharing his bed with one of his crew, and certainly not a male crew member. But the past weeks had been some of the most enjoyable he’d ever had. Sean was different from the other folks on the ship and back home. His gentle, compassionate nature was a contrast to Joel’s brash, hard-line approach, but both men cared passionately about the same things: the ship and the crew.

“Hey,” Sean said, glancing down at Joel’s wandering fingers.

“Morning.” Joel ran his thumb over Sean’s lips. The guy was so handsome it made Joel’s knees go weak. “Did I wake you?”

Sean shook his head, a sleepy smile on his face. “No. Or at least not in any way I object to.”

“You sleep deep in my room.”

“Your bed is a lot comfier than mine,” Sean said. He rolled over and draped an arm across Joel’s chest.

“And there I was thinking I had worn you out.”

“Oh, yeah, that too. What are you doing awake so early? You should be as tired as me.”

Joel smirked. “Stamina,” he said, planting a wet kiss on Sean’s face. “And I like to watch you sleep.”

“That’s not creepy.” Sean laughed and snuggled closer, awakening all kinds of sensations in Joel’s body.

Start reading the series with book one!

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Stranger in Black by Devon Rhodes

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

Stranger in Black DSP CoverChristian wants to end his attraction to his cheating lover once and for all, so he enlists the help of his best friend, David, to carry off a charade at David’s firm’s masquerade ball. David’s coworker is Mira, the girl Carl is cheating with, and Chris is willing to dress like a Southern belle just so he can get a glimpse of the woman who stole his boyfriend’s heart.

He knows what Carl will be wearing. After all, he blew him while he was trying on his black costume, so he knows he won’t be hard to spot. When he does, he can’t resist one more unforgettable experience with Carl, so he drags him to an empty banquet room and kneels to give him a memorable blowjob. But the joke’s on him as he immediately realizes the gorgeous uncut cock before him doesn’t match Carl’s cut meat. Deciding to enjoy himself anyway, he lets the guy finish, and just as they are heading back to the lobby, he’s confronted by Mira.

He doesn’t know that Mira has overheard Carl talking to “Chris” on the phone and thinks he’s cheating on her. So when she makes a beeline for him and takes Chris to the Ladies Room, thinking he’s the woman Carl is cheating with, he’s shocked. But he’s even more shocked when he finds out Mira is Carl’s fiancé. Being a kind-hearted soul, he simply tells her that he’s already told Carl it’s over, but if Carl comes around again, he’ll reinforce it. He doesn’t tell her he’s a man.

I really enjoyed the comedy of errors that resulted from this switch and liked the way the author later allowed for a romance to develop with Jarrod, who was actually the one dressed as the stranger in black that night. There’s even a new romance ready for Mira once she eventually discovers the truth about Carl for herself. And there are further misunderstandings in store for both Christian and Jarrod, but there are also heartwarming romantic moments and the promise of a happy future.

This story was short, but packed with fun, romance, deception, redemption, and most importantly, it left me feeling happy. Considering the length of the story, I felt as if it was much longer because I found each of the five characters featured in the story to be believable and well-developed. I especially loved Christian, and I thought Jarrod was simply sex on legs! Speaking of… The sex scenes were just enough to whet the appetite for more. I’m going to miss this couple and that’s pretty unusual for a short book. Obviously, I recommend this to my fellow MM romance lovers, and I’m going to be seeking more from Devon Rhodes in the future.

The cover on this new edition by Anna Sikorska features a handsome, smiling man in black about to put on his mask—perfect for the story.

An Alisa Release Day Review: One Step Forward by Tia Fielding

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

One Step ForwardSam Becker, a horse whisperer, agrees to take one last job before retiring to his Texas ranch. It’s clear as soon as he meets the Taylor family in Kentucky that he’s in for a challenge. What he doesn’t expect is the way his own wounds reopen. He’s never really dealt with the suicide of his mentally ill wife, and he won’t be able to ignore that hurt forever.

Joshua Taylor and his horse, Calla, were a force to be reckoned with on the eventing circuit until an accident ended their careers. Most of the pain is on the inside, however, and Sam knows those injuries are the slowest to mend. Sam’s unique methods help Calla and, surprisingly, Josh, but he’s still lost without riding. Their feelings for each other come hard and fast, and Josh starts his first steps of recovery, but Sam needs to return to Texas eventually. Even if Josh is able to move past the accident, they’ll still have a long and difficult journey to make before they can be together.

This was a nice story.  Sam knows he is in for a challenge when he meets Calla and Josh.  They are both lost without the other, so in order to help one he must work with both.

Sam and Josh are both pulled to each other when they meet, but hold themselves apart until an injured dog causes them to live together.  As they grow closer to each other they discover they both have more healing to do before they can move forward together.  Their time apart will tell if they are meant to be.

This story is told from both Sam and Josh’s point of view, which helps to know what they characters are feeling.  This story is well written, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters.  Most of this story Sam and Josh were apart from each other and had the belief that if it is meant to be it will happen.  That is a mindset I have a hard time to connect to, but it seems to work with these characters.  I still enjoyed the story and ending, it’s just not what I usually go for.

Cover art by AngstyG is nice and works well for this story.

Levi Bell can see a person’s soul just by looking into their eyes.

Author Bio:

Nash Summers rarely has any idea what she’s doing. But when she likes to pretend, she pretends by writing stories at the pace of drying paint. As if that wasn’t exhilarating enough, Nash also enjoys absolute silence, general politeness, and waiting her turn in line.

Needless to say, she’s a bona fide hell raiser.
