Review: False Comeback  (Goliaths of Wrestling book 4) by Lily Mayne

Rating:4.5🌈

False Comeback continues to expand and explore Lily Mayne’s unique paranormal romance series set in an otherworldly underground wrestling world, Goliaths of Wrestling.

The intense energy and high emotions that have been resonating between the lord high elf wrestler, Crossbody, and the egregious ghoul with a chip on his shoulder, Vince Burke, come crashing into a head in this crazy, great story, False Comeback.

The set up for this romance starts in the previous book with a huge argument between the two characters that requires a court Wrestling mediation and in-house counseling sessions from the fabulous Corey.

The absolutely combustible, compelling relationship that Mayne is building between Crossbody and Vince captures our entire attention as  the layers of history and depth of their personalities are revealed. As their animosity lessens and their intensity of attraction/intimacy becomes even stronger, the characters become increasingly complex and relatable.

Their interactions with the other wrestlers, their fears, and unvoiced feelings, it’s all there, beautifully laid out by Mayne.

And I have to say that last quarter of the story is a fantastic narrative ride! Part thrilling adventure, all sustained suspense and wild moments! Along with some great comedy and sublime characters and storytelling.  I read several parts of this twice. Gotta love Ethel.

For additional world expansion, we also get a group of new wrestlers added to the Goliaths of Wrestling found family.  What a fascinating new group they are! I can’t wait to meet them in depth.

This has grown to be a favorite new series for me this year.  Highly recommended.

Read the warnings. Sexy, kinky, in this case a D/s relationship, otherworldly, hilariously spew worthy, and a definite recommendation.

High Lord Crossbody

I’ve given up a lot to pursue a career in professional wrestling, and I’m not going to have it all derailed by an uncouth ghoul with a huge chip on his shoulder, who decided he disliked me for no reason on his very first day at Goliaths.

Vince Burke has been the thorn in my side for five long years, but things have taken a turn for the worse. The management is threatening to get involved. I refuse to let Burke take the life I’ve worked so hard to build from me, so I try to be on my best behaviour at work, but something about him just gets to me. He consumes my thoughts. I can’t stand him.

And when something happens between us that leaves me feeling completely unmoored, I find myself thinking about him constantly. He’s taken all the control, and I need to get it back. Because I liked it too much, and I can’t let myself feel that way about him.

Vince “Rolling Rimmer” Burke

I love everything about my job as a professional wrestler at Goliaths of Wrestling, an underground supernatural wrestling organisation. I love the showmanship. The costumes. The crowds. The ring and the arena. My co-workers.

Well, except one.

High Lord Crossbody, the royal fae who’s an actual prince, is a pompous snob and a pain in my backside. Everything about him rankles me—his clipped drawl, his disdainful sneer, his stupid long legs and eerily perfect face and sultry hooded eyes…

I hate everything about him. I do. So when our mutual dislike boils over in a very public argument, then explodes into something even hotter and completely inappropriate, I’m left confused and even more annoyed.

Because now I want him. And I hate that I want him.

Review:  The Orc Who Hated Christmas (An MM Monster Christmas Book 1) by Gigi Rivers

Rating: 4.75🌈

Gigi Rivers has written a really beautiful fantasy romance that weaves into the relationship between an adopted Pixie Cas and a cast off, painfully maligned Orc, Graal, so many emotional themes.

Abandonment, emotionally and physically, adolescent and adult trauma due to racism or rather speciesism, found families and acceptance in every aspect of their lives.  This is a highly complex, often emotional story with wonderful moments and some very sexy scenes.

Cas was adopted into the family of hearth and kitchen witches that this series is focused upon, and his retelling of that moment is both heartfelt and magical.  That scene has so many layers to it. It’s funny, poignant, heartwarming, and beautiful.  And exactly why I love this book.

Rivers’ characters have been vividly defined, by their well crafted personalities and by their backgrounds that support their own actions and responses to the events around them. To say more is to go into the details that might remove those magical moments that connect with us and make us feel so deeply drawn into their lives and developing love story.

I just love this couple, this series and Gigi Rivers is on my auto list.  Highly recommended.

Don’t forget to check out the Author’s Notes for the exact reading order for the stories listed below (not that I knew about this to begin with). I should have done that and have been working on it now.

A grumpy orc who hates Christmas. A Christmas-obsessed pixie. Can these opposites find love together?

Graal is an orc who hates Christmas. Every year, he spends the day alone in his crappy rented room, haunted by memories of a family who never loved him. He just wishes Christmas and everyone who celebrates it would leave him alone.

Cas is a pixie who loves Christmas. He dresses up in sparkly outfits, calls himself the Christmas pixie, and spreads holiday cheer and pixie dust in the bakery where he works. But this year, his partner cheated on him and then left him. Still, Cas won’t let a broken heart ruin his favourite time of the year.

When Graal steps into Cas’s bakery, Cas is determined that the grumpy orc will enjoy the holiday. Graal is reluctant, but it’s hard to resist the pixie’s charms. As Cas shows Graal the magic of the season, something lingers in the air between them. And it isn’t just pixie dust.

But can a pretty Christmas pixie really love a grumpy orc? And can Cas open his heart again so soon after being betrayed? Or will Graal celebrate another Christmas alone?

The Orc Who Hated Christmas is a cosy fantasy romance with plenty of spice. It features grumpy/sunshine, hates Christmas/loves Christmas, hurt/comfort, fling to more, size difference, an orc who doesn’t believe his worth, a pixie keen to show him it, and a guaranteed HEA. Whilst this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.

Review: Gratification in Gluttony: Passing Through Cafe #2 by Nik Knight

Rating: 3.5🌈

“Welcome to The Passing Through Cafe, where the coffee is hot, the pastries mouth-watering, and the staff are more than a little unholy. They will make you feel welcome—more or less—as they provide exceptional service—most of the time. Conveniently located outside Purgatory Station, stop in as you wait for your next train and enjoy a latte with a shot of something special, a savory bite of kriltcake, and the sauciest tea this side of the Pentagram.

*Watch out for ninja stars*

Passing Through Purgatory #1 , a story that was not only a stellar introduction to the complicated series universe but to the highly diverse characters from both worlds this series is based upon is a favorite of mine. Including the otherworldly diner they work in, The Passing Through Purgatory Cafe.

I love that book and couple. Oliver and Liel, both so different and yet so deeply compelling as a couple , along with everyone else were a fantastic story.

It’s where we met human Oliver’s best friend, Jude, and co worker, Toni, an extroverted demon Elas. Knight beautifully portrayed the Hell dimension, its many species and territories, including the political and societal issues that are seen in the human world. Not astonishing since some of the territories have names such as Gluttony, Lust,  or Greed.

That narrative gave the reader overlays of pathos to go with humor, thoughtfulness and compassion to go with the sexiness of the developing relationship.  And the excellent characterizations!

However, in Gratification in Gluttony, something has been lost, starting with the characters. The anticipated romance between Jude and Toni isn’t as strong as the one between Oliver and Liel. And that has to do with not only the characters as they’re portrayed but the relationship between them. There’s so much sex, not unusual but it’s given so much attention that everything else like cohesion of characters and details of grounding in backgrounds is lacking.

Primarily, my issue is the character of Toni the Elas. He has so much potential but feels like it’s not really well defined.  He’s a being that has left his family business, cutting ties with them, mostly to become his own being. But the few scenes written with interactions between himself and them (with the exception of a BIL), don’t seem to support that framework.  What is off putting is Toni’s explosive anger issues, and his continued poor treatment of Rusty the Pyclon, a pink walking Care Bear with a snarky attitude that hides a very damaged past. Toni is told repeatedly by different friends, including bff Gem, that Rusty is very young whose sometimes annoying facade is due to a terrible past. Does he have compassion or stop being borderline abusive? No, not even when Rusty himself offers to the group a bit of his awful adolescence.

His temper and lack of compassion to others ,as written,  didn’t extend to expectations for himself. I wasn’t sure why Knight thought that showing him consistently in this way was a good idea. But it kept me from connecting with him.

As did Jude’s treatment of him during their growing relationship. Jude is an incredibly well crafted character but not one I liked a lot. I understood their background and actions but together this wasn’t a relationship that I enjoyed wholly.  Maybe towards the end. But that’s when it could be perceived as a start of a relationship.

Unlike the other characters, these two are the primary focus. No isn’t much narrative wandering about here to enhance our observations about this dimension or our understanding of these characters. There’s scenes from the first novel we see from different angles, and the next couple is being set up for their story.

This really didn’t expand on any new world building or add much to the series overall in terms of exploration of the territories, economics, or even the environment that surrounds them.  More of this please just as in the original story.

Interesting but not a couple I can connect with.  Looking forward to book 3.

Great cover.

When Jude entered The Passing Through Cafe, Toni thought he’d be nothing more than a fun night, a challenge to win, a fixation to satisfy; Toni didn’t expect Jude to be exactly what he never knew he was looking for.

As the rightful heir to the Maryno family dynasty, Toni grew up with clear expectations of who he was supposed to be, and more importantly, who he wasn’t. Growing up a constant disappointment isn’t a childhood experience he recommends, but he’s come a long way from the little boy who could never quite measure up to his family’s toxic standards. At twenty-nine, he’s finally proud of the man he’s built himself into, and while the routine of his life is simple and, sure, sometimes lonely, he’s content.

Or so he thought.

Enter Jude, a human from across the veil who ignites something in Toni that he’s never allowed himself to explore, and Toni can’t wait to burn. While the spark of attraction is instantaneous, he knows it’s going to take more than a romp in the hay to win Jude over, and Toni quickly sets to work, proving to Jude that home can be found in the most unexpected places, that chosen family is always something worth fighting for, and that their love is far from small.

Join Toni and the rest of the eccentric staff of The Passing Through Cafe in Nik Knight’s rom-com urban fantasy series, full of found family, hilarious hijincks, spectacular self-discovery, and love that defies definition.

Review:  Father F’in’ Christmas: A Minded Story by R.L. Merrill

Rating: 4🌈

Father F’in’ Christmas: A Minded Story by R.L. Merrill is a short story about loss, grief, and redemption. From the perspective of a deceased firefighter looking back at his life, especially on his grieving wife who’s been struggling since his death.

Merrill’s story is one I wish was longer as it ends just as I want to see more of the characters as they move forward.  There’s pain, recognition of one’s own faults and failures, and also the ways in which we have been successful. It’s a human journey full of otherworldly beings and human struggles.  And cats. Lots of cats.

I’m definitely heading to read the rest of the Minded stories, more of Louis and Maggie.

A holiday story for those not very fond of the holidays. Put this and the author on your TBR list.

Isn’t that a wonderful cover?

Review:  Fool Me Twice (Cursebreakers, Inc. Book 2) by A. M. Rose

Rating:  4.25🌈

If I thought the dark curses of Like a House on Fire were terrifying, Rose takes this story and goes into another magical lane of darkness and curses.

Fool Me Twice by A. M. Rose, the second book in the Cursebreakers, Inc. series, has two main characters we met in book one. Cain, the brutal, anger filled owner of an illegal underground fighting club (where Ash fought in book 1), and Hart, the uber polished, always controlled unofficial head of his family of Cursebreakers.

Of the two main storylines, the relationship aspect between Cain and Hart doesn’t really work (imo) as well as the magical curse plot line.

Aside from a instant heavy D/s element, there’s other parts of this relationship, that as written, makes it harder, imo, to create a connection between them as a couple and a reader.  One is the missing history or background between them.  It’s implied here but it’s not clear what happened. There’s a short story that a reader can access after finishing the book that fills this in, but it’s lack of details in the narrative leaves a deep gap between the present day emotional complexity and intensity of the actions of the characters to make their interactions believable. For Hart to break down, abandoning his character, there needed to be a foundation laid out for this to be something that could be understood. Especially when Cain is the key.

I don’t think that happened. The characters apart are intriguing. Together, not so sure.

What was incredible about the story is the curse , the mystery and once again, the escalating suspense and horror that surrounds the curse and those affected by it. It’s so well written, the tension and horror so intense as well as the puzzling nature and scrambling for a solution.

That last part of the narrative is a true white knuckle ride.  It’s emotional, compelling ,and very dangerous. And the reader is all in.

Aside from the romantic thread, there’s other things that really matter here. The authors bring us more background information about how the Cursebreakers were formed as a unit, we see more of the agency and its members, and get a feel for stories to come.

The various members of the remarkable Cursebreakers are still being fleshed out. The first being Ash with Morgan. Now Hart, still polished house family manager alongside his partner Cain. Next up is the affable Fix, the large Cursebreaker who’s helped hold them together during a formative period/history that’s slowly being revealed.

Wren, an intriguing Cursebreaker who works with cursed creatures, has important clues released here about his past and a new character that was introduced. Can’t wait for their story to be released.

I’m excited for this series and recommending this story. Read them in the order they are written for character development and event content.

“Be a calm wave in the ocean of chaos.”

Hart, perhaps, took that quote a bit too much to heart. In the midst of drama and the constant restlessness of his family, he chose to present himself as unwavering. Poised. Controlled. Even when inside, he’s anything but. There are layers to him underneath the perfection. Layers he’s desperately craving for someone to peel away.

It’s just his luck that the only person who knows how to do that lives his life in shades of gray. Morally gray.

Cane punches first. Period. What question would he even need to ask?

Only, it seems like his tried-and-true method isn’t working so well for him anymore. With an empire to run in the underbelly of Slatehollow, the last thing he needs is a curse placed on his head and drawing attention to the details of his…business ventures.

But when it starts to do more than just that, he knows there is only one person he can call. Hart. And with Hart, inevitably, comes a realization. Cane wants so much more than cursebreaking from him.

Will Hart let him have it? Or will the curse destroy them both first?

Review: Like a House on Fire (Cursebreakers, Inc. Book 1) by A.M. Rose

Rating: 4.5🌈

Cursebreakers, Inc is a series that has released books 1 and 2 in the terrific new paranormal fantasy romances from the authors known as A.M. Rose.  Sexy, fascinating, dystopian in the world setting, magical and often horrifying, Rose grabbed me from the beginning of this novel.

The Cursebreakers, a group of men (in this case) who are born with a mark that lets the magical governing agency know what they are and what they might be capable of magically as they develop.  The history and backgrounds of each Cursebreaker is  relayed by the characters in their stories, in most cases not very pleasant ones. And, as we find out in Book 2, how exactly this group was formed.

Like a House on Fire sets down the basic foundations of the world and agency. It’s a tantalizing framework that immediately begs for more exploration and detailed knowledge because of the defining features Rose lets us see through the lens of their creations.

The first of the Cursebreakers is Ash, who has an affinity with fire and fighting. He’s impulsive and highly skilled in a certain type of curses as is everyone in their group. Each having a specific skill set or sets of magical abilities to breaking curses.

It’s a two person POV, and the magical drama, which is horrifyingly subtle at first, is built skillfully as the scenes bounce between the two protagonists.

Morgan and his bff, Brea, arrive at a dilapidated house he’s just inherited by an aunt he barely knew.  It’s not an ordinary house, fyi. Various things happen and he’s trapped inside.

In a panic, Brea calls the Cursebreakers and Ash is sent to handle what’s assumed to be a simple case. It’s not.

From the central point of a strange situation, an unknown magical force which happens to be a house, Rose writes a novel that tells multiple stories.  Ash and Morgan develop into fascinating layered characters, people with depths able to develop different aspects of their personalities as they explore and deal with each new frightening situation.

Then there’s all the magical elements, the spells and craftwork, the tools and techniques created to enhance the characters and world building. It’s remarkable and feels believable in such a dark fantasy environment.

As the terror and suspense keeps multiplying, more series knowledge and intense magical energy becomes available that pulls in other members of the Cursebreakers so we meet them and lays a foundation for new plots going forward.

There’s a trigger warning for people with issues with tight spaces and claustrophobia. Take note because I found parts, ok many parts, of this story terrifying.

I just was so invested in this story and the characters. A definite page turner and a must read for all lovers of paranormal or fantasy dark romance.

Review:  Two Thousand Shadows ( Kings of Chaos Book #4) by Jocelynn Drake

Rating: 5🌈

We’re at the penultimate book in Jocelynn Drake’s fantastic epic paranormal series of ancient Chinese vampires, terrifying Fae dynastic plots, realm invasions, dragons, fated mates , witches and paranormal beings of all sorts of magical mythology.

What a mesmerizing wild explosive fantasy romantic ride this series is. And with Two Thousand Shadows we get both answers to a series long puzzle and an agonizing cliffhanger to angst over until the finale is released.

Two Thousand Shadows has a lot of storylines and elements to it, particularly with Drake having to concentrate on pulling together the entire series dramatic plots and characters for huge battles and storyline climaxes that will resolve the majority of the series main crucial issues.

Does Drake pull it off? Absolutely!

With the addition of new characters, cat shifters with magical abilities that are slowly revealed throughout the narrative, and a new couple who are (already formed in the reader’s imagination) a more substantial force in both personalities and character growth.

Junjie, who’s a seer and warrior, has his own painful past revisited here through memories and conversations with his clan. The cat shifter is revealed to be Leo, the stray cat Junjie has been feeding a surprise that came at the end of the previous story.

Leo’s character and shifter background is rolled out as Leo decides what he wants to do with the clan and his affinity for Junjie. It’s interesting how Drake again is able to write Leo feelings and thoughts as a paranormal character with a different nature than a human being.  Leo’s story feels very different from anything else that has come from before, that includes the dragon, who also acts as it should.

What or who is delightfully written is an orphan cat shifter who acts as a bridge between Leo and the clan, especially Junjie, pulling Leo into the found family in a relatable manner.

When it comes to the all important details and climatic moments, Drake has the power of the many magical beings and surprisingly great twists to make them so satisfying.  Did I want more? Sure. But this is so complicated, so many elements and elaborate layers of storylines leading up the result that I probably wouldn’t be happy unless there was a couple more books.

These are fabulous characters and it’s hard to believe that with all their potential for growth and more importantly additional content, this is leading up to the end. Hopefully with a break, Drake will think about new stories.

There’s another story coming because as I said this ends on a cliffhanger. A unexpected twist.

Until that book drops, grab up this fantastic series. Read them in the order they were written and enjoy the journey into an incredible universe and amazing characters.

Love the covers, the concept. Fantastic.

That cat is a liar!

The “stray cat” Junjie has been feeding and cuddling for months is actually an extremely rare cat shifter.

Of course, Leo would have preferred to continue their arrangement of Junjie feeding him choice bits of fish and rubbing his belly, but he needs Junjie’s help and that means revealing his secret.

An orphaned kitten needs a home after the fae killed his parents, and Leo is the most irresponsible, feckless, lazy creature in existence.

In short, he’s a terrible choice for raising a two-year-old cat shifter.

No. The WORST choice.

Yet, even after the little boy is settled with Junjie and the rest of the Zhang clan, Leo can’t walk away.

There’s just something about that sweet, bashful vampire with the too-soft heart and sexy eyes. And that kid is stealing chunks of his heart, too.

The war with the fae is about to tear the world apart and an old dark shadow has fallen over the Zhang clan, threatening to destroy them all.

Leo must stay to protect his new family. Even if it means giving up all his secrets to the vampire who is steadily stealing away his heart.

Two Thousand Shadows is the fourth novel in the Kings of Chaos series. This book contains a gentle, shy vampire who will stop at nothing to protect those he loves, a shifter with a secret, a nosy family who wants all the spilled tea, other non-human surprises, snark, angst, magic, found family, brotherly bickering, chaos, cuddles, secrets, and an endless love.

Review: The Trouble With Trying to Bag a Blood Witch (Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees Book 5) by Jennifer Cody

Rating: 5🌈

Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees is one of my favorite unhinged series. Jennifer Cody’s fabulously eccentric characters and wildly imaginative

storylines that swing from the humorous to the horrifying to the absurd and adventurous and back are always captivating.

The Trouble With Trying to Bag a Blood Witch, the fifth book in the series, is another resounding hit.  With one twist after another popping up in the story, the reader is still firmly centered on the growing relationship between otherworldly finder Darcy Hellspinner and very chill human Elijah Penn as they face numerous challenges and overcome attacks from villains unknown.

It’s a wildly chaotic journey that’s well constructed, layered with strange creatures and beings, and goes to unexpected places that even our main characters didn’t anticipate.

I believe that there is one more book in the series. There’s a wedding that still needs to happen for Arlington Fox and Romily, our original couple. That should be utter joy and a great universal celebration of the most unhinged storylines and these fabulous zany characters.  I can’t wait.

I highly recommend this series and story. Read these in order, it does help. Great covers.

Elijah:

Imagine coming home from an extended stay in a foreign country to find a letter from a house sitter you didn’t hire warning you to get a protection order against your ex and informing you that you’re a terrible plant dad.

I mean, I am a terrible plant dad, and I probably should get a protection order against Stalker Steve, but that letter isn’t the weirdest thing to happen to me today. I think the teleporting alien baby who’s decided to make me their perch probably takes the prize for Weirdest Thing in Elijah Penn’s Life.

Fortunately, the baby’s parents hired a bounty hunter to bring me and my new buddy back. Unfortunately, Darcy Hellspinner might be the sexiest man I’ve ever met in real life, and if it isn’t clear from the fact I call my ex Stalker Steve, I have terrible taste in men. I have the sneaking suspicion that Darcy’s going to be my next big mistake, but that’s ok—I’m probably going to be his too.

The Trouble With Trying to Bag a Blood Witch is a 87k paranormal romance with a little bit of sci-fi mixed in, two MCs who think this is just an extended hook up, and a baby alien with impeccable timing. The Foxily family is growing again. It’s Darcy’s turn to bring in a mate, but he’s lodging an official complaint because this isn’t what he signed up for.

Review:  Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe  By Michele Notaro

Rating: 4.5🌈

Seb & Ailin: Case of the Murderous Mistletoe  By Michele Notaro is a wonderfully entertaining, well written holiday story in the author’s Ellwood/Brinnswick universe.

Full of characters and couples from Notaro’s multi-series world, it is helpful if the reader is familiar with the universe and its inhabitants so that the story isn’t overwhelming with its numerous elements and characters that just have small roles or mentions but are very important in the series/world.  With a well-packed magical storyline of 194 pages , there’s only so much background for the author to provide while also fully laying out the mysteries behind the murderous toys and Holiday trimmings that’s at the center of the story.

Notaro does a great job of folding in the amusing aspects of the story, along with the absurdity and the horror of the toys going terrifyingly bad.  As the narrative ramps up each element of the storyline, pulling the reader effortlessly into the drama and the mystery, it centers on this one couple and their relationship so perfectly that it makes this reader want to revisit their story all over again.

What in the world has my soulmate gotten us into this time?

All I want to do is get ready to have our family over for Winter Solstice, but like all things involving Ailin Ellwood, we get pulled into another wild BCA case. The Brinnswick Central Agency tends to pull us in for the really… let’s say difficult—and weird, let’s not forget weird—magical cases, so I have no doubt this one will be a doozy.

Even knowing that, I never really expected to be attacked by kids’ toys and Christmas decorations. But when my viramore—soulmate—is involved, well, things get all kinds of whacky.

Join Seb and Ailin as they try to figure out who’s behind the murderous mistletoe while they get ready for the Ellwood family holiday celebrations.

Review:  Cast A Spell (Mages and Mates Book 4) by Andy Gallo

Rating: 4.75🌈

Andy Gallo writes about family love, family dynamics and relationships so beautifully, no matter what the theme or situations his characters are facing.  Whether it’s a fantasy story, paranormal romance or something completely different, it’s in the realistic relationships between the characters he’s creating and the firm, strong foundations on which their lives have been set that we believe in, magical or not.

And that’s never more apparent than in his Mages and Mates series and this novel in particular.

Throughout this series, book by book, we’ve gotten to know the politically powerful , magical Hollen family as the brothers discover their mates and the fact that they’re part of a larger plan to save their world.

Each novel, by design, has slowly been revealing more of a sinister plot to destroy the Great Ward along with the other thread of the ancient guardians, four  magical fated mate couple in a designated place, who are being replaced by the newly mated Hollen brothers. But there’s also more to this still evolving series arc and we get more of those elements here.

In Cast A Spell, Gallo delivers several great new twists and it really makes this series even better in terms of character development and the depths of the storylines.  It also derives from the family, on two sides at its core.

The Hollen family, the mages , with Otto now being the brother in line to make his own match and potentially be another chosen new guardian along with whoever is his mate.  But there’s a secret or maybe a danger he’s hiding.

The other side is a family or herd of unicorns, one known more for its isolation out in Montana. Its oldest son and heir, Thalion Eisenwald, knows he might be the one the Hollens are looking to as a possible match for Otto, or one of his other brothers.

I don’t want to get into the specifics of this wonderfully fascinating and complex story but it’s got brotherly dynamics that feel very familiar and real even when based in a fantasy setting, as well as realistic emotional moments and inner turmoil that comes from the same places that we can relate to. Fear for those we love.

Gallo has given us a strong narrative, full of excitement, great action, and believable character development that happens between brothers and lovers and multiple characters. All that while bringing together the major elements and characters that’s required to move everything forward to a higher, even darker and more complex storyline for the series.

I believe there’s only one book left. And it comes out next year.  That’s Spellbound.  I can’t wait for that story. But this amazing universe deserves far more attention than this series. And these characters and magical creatures need more attention and stories.  I hope that happens.

I highly recommend this series and the book but none are standalones. All must be read in the order they are written in order to understand the characters and the arc development.

Otto Hollen has always protected his younger brothers. Three of them have been chosen to be guardians for the next Great Ward, and Otto’s determined to avoid the final position. Yes, being chosen is a great honor, but Otto’s convinced it will force Owen, his youngest brother, to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Otto would rather die himself than let that happen – even if he has to fight the Earth itself.

Thalion Eisenwald should be celebrating. His father, the unicorn alpha, named Thalion to be his heir. It’s what he’s wanted his entire life. So why does the arrival of two Hollen brothers make him uneasy? He’s heard rumors of new guardians being chosen, but those are stories. Besides, Thalion plans to be the next alpha of the herd, not a guardian for the world.

When the Earth chooses Otto as Thalion’s mate, Otto shockingly rejects the bond. Thalion is furious, hurt, and grudgingly impressed. But their brothers’ capture changes everything. To save them, Otto will need to accept the bond with Thalion. Faced with an impossible choice, they desperately search for search for a third option. One that doesn’t result in those they love ending up dead.

Cast a Spell is a 75K word fated mates romance with high-stakes magical battles and a guaranteed happily-ever-after. This fourth and penultimate book in the Mages and Mates series. It can be read as a stand alone, but it’s best to read the series in order. Cast a Spell includes talking swords, ancient curses, and a no nonsense unicorn grandmother who dishes out life lessons with a large scoop of tough love.
