A Paul B Review: Germ (Demon Elite #6) by April Kelley

germ-by-april-kelleyJeremy Russell is the Demon Elite team’s computer genius.  While most of the men are out in the field, he stays behind and acts as the point person for the team.  Surveillance, information, and hacking are the tools of his trade.  He also tries to keep the guys from getting too serious with his flirting over their communication system.  When Reggie Mize was rescued a short while ago, he developed a major crush on him.  But being the socially awkward computer geek that his is, Germ decides he might not have a chance with him.

Reggie Mize has been beaten down his whole life.  First it was his father that subjected him to emotional abuse.  With his father gone, his sister Victoria picked up where their father left off.  Luckily for him, the Demon Elite team rescued him before Victoria could sell him into slavery.  Now he is living in the team’s estate worried that either his sister or his father’s men will come after him.

During a game of paintball among the team, their boyfriends and Reggie, Germ vows to protect Reggie throughout the game.   At the end, while Germ had been “killed,” Reggie had not been.  For once Reggie trust that someone is not out to hurt him.  They make a date to go out shopping with others in the team.  While at the mall, the hit man currently working for his sister finds him because of a tracking device that was implanted inside of his arm.  Germ cannot believe that Reggie had not alerted them of this fact and think the shopping trip is a trap to eliminate his team.  Reggie does not want the others harmed and is willing to turn himself over if Germ isn’t hurt.  While all members of the team escape, they must still deal with the hit man and Victoria Mize once and for all.  Germ will have to see that Reggie is not like other men and work his way back to trusting the abused man and how to deal with him.

This sixth book in the Demon Elite series keeps the action and passion going.  As each man of the team begins to find their respective partner, the net is slowly coming around their enemy and former boss Victoria Mize.  The awkwardness of Germ and Reggie comes from different places and understandable.  Germ is more comfortable in front of a computer while Reggie has been psychologically abused most of his life.  This is a romance you cannot help but root for.  The story of how Germ got his nickname was cute and not at all what I thought it would be. 

The cover art by Latricia Waters is absolutely perfect for the novel.  Germ is pictured as the sexy geek that I would have pictured him.

This was a re-read for me but the first time I had listened to it on audio. This book remains one of my favorites of the series. The guy’s have worked hard to get to the positive place in their relationship that they’re in. During the course of this story they go to both of their parents’s homes and it is interesting to see the different dynamics between the two families. Most of the story is spent at Zane’s home where they try to solve a case involving Zane’s family ranch. I enjoyed the case in this one and I found it fast paced and entertaining. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments in this story, some really sweet and romantic ones and some of the steamiest ones in the series. I love every minute of this book every time I read it.

Audio:

I had listened to the first four books in this series on audio in the past. There were two prior narrators and this narrator is totally new. I wasn’t sure about his voice for Ty when I first started. The problem with reading a book first, in my opinion, is that you have the characters firmly set in your mind. While his Ty was fine, it wasn’t how I envisioned Ty. His Zane though was fantastic. Deep, growly voice with just a bit of a Southern drawl. After a few chapters I got used to his Ty and decided I liked it. There are a lot of characters in this book, with a lot of different accents and I felt like this narrator did a great job on all of them. I also found him able to do both male and female voices well which is a talent some narrators do not have. I loved listening to this on audio. I think listening to this really emphasized the emotional scenes and made them more heart wrenching (There was a scene between Ty & Zane’s dad that made my eyes water. It was much more emotional listening to it than reading it.) And the sexy scenes? Holy moly they’re burning hot on audio. I would definitely recommend this to readers/listeners.

Cover art by L.C. Chase. I don’t know what to say about the cover really. It’s very simple but it’s a classic and I would never want to see it change.

This was a re-read for me but the first time I have listened to it on audio.  This is another of my favorite books in this series.  This is probably the most emotional of all the books.  Ty and Zane head to New Orleans with the Sidewinder guys for a weekend of fun and end up in a complicated case involving both of their pasts.  In some ways I think this part of the plot is over the top but really the most important part of the story is Ty and Zane’s relationship.  Both of the them have issues which we’ve known from the start of the series.  In this book though, the tentative hold they’ve had comes crashing down on them.  And when it comes crashing down it comes down hard.  Not only does it come crashing down hard on them, it comes crashing down hard on the reader.  There are some emotionally charged scenes in this book and I remember how devastated I was at parts of this the first time I read it.  Even on re-read it was very hard to go through with them.  It’s our first detailed look at the Sidewinder guys and that part is a great set up for the branch off series with Nick and Kelly.  
 
Audio:
 
I really love this narrator and I felt like he did an excellent job.  As stated above this is an emotional read anyways but hearing this on audio was very difficult.  The narrator captures all the emotions, both good and bad, that the guys are going through in this.  There were a lot of scenes that just broke my heart.  It was brutal hearing the things they were saying to each other. There’s one scene where one of them starts to cry and the narrator just nailed the scene perfectly.   In addition there are a lot of side characters in this story and I felt the narrator did a great job on all of their voices.  Extra enjoyable were Digger’s Cajun and Liam’s British accents.  If you are a fan of audio books I highly recommend listening to this book.
 
Cover art by L.C. Chase. This is one of my favorite covers in this series.  It captures an important part of the story.  These covers are simple but are classics and I would hate to see them  change.

Rhett shook his head. With a deep breath, he logged onto the employee portal and typed Pop’s flight number into the tracking system. Rhett blinked at the screen.

“What the fuck?” Kaden whispered, peering over his shoulder.

Without answering his husband – because he couldn’t – Rhett dialed Jasper. One ring. Two rings. Please answer.

“Hey, Rhett,” he answered after the third ring. “Isn’t it early there?”

“About six a.m. Annabelle called, though, and I told her I’d try to get some information to help her relax,”
Rhett said.

Silence. “About your grandfather.” Statement, not a question.

“She call you, too?
”
“No, I’m not the person she goes to for comfort,” he answered with an unfamiliar edge to his voice that Rhett didn’t have time to explore. “But I’m waiting for him, too.”

Right… “Would you run a track on Trixie for me, please?”

“Can’t you?”

“Yeah, but I’d appreciate you confirming what I found. I think there might be a glitch on my end.” I hope.

Jasper typed on the other end. “Um, can you confirm the plane number?”

Rhett swallowed hard and his heart raced. “Why?”

“Please?”

He blew out a breath and recited the plane’s registered number.

More typing. “And he left on Friday morning at four-thirty?”

“Yes, why? What are you seeing?”

An unmeasurable moment of silence preceded Jasper’s sharp inhale. “Nothing.”

“What the hell do you mean, ‘nothing’?”

“After Lou cleared him for takeoff we have nothing. No tracking. No communication.”

Nothing. The word cleared every other thought from Rhett’s head and sucked the moisture from his mouth. If he could count on one thing with his grandfather, it was his adherence to safety. To get nothing meant his navigation system was disabled, which meant…

“I’m sorry, man.” Jasper’s voice yanked him from his thoughts. “Want me to call the FAA or Annabelle?”

“Definitely not Annabelle. Yes, I’m going to be an asshole and wait until we have some answers before talking to her.”

“No arguments there,” Jasper said. “FAA?”

Rhett leaned on Kaden, who had appeared at his side somewhere around the time he lost all the air from his lungs. “Let me ask the FBI. If they don’t know anything, we’ll start a full investigation. Can you send me a screen shot of the flight?”

“Um,” Jasper started, “sure, but why would the FBI track flights? I know he used to run missions for them, but he can’t anymore.”

“He and Stuart are friends, and I have to exhaust all possibilities before involving the FAA.”

More silence. “You know best.”

No, I don’t, but we’ll pretend.

“Keep me updated.”

“Will do. Thanks, Jasper.”

A MelanieM Review: Conscious Decisions of the Heart (More Heat Than the Sun #2)

 Ben Rider and Nikolas Mikkelsen learn that danger comes in all shapes and sizes and often in places you least expect it.

Conscious Decisions of the Heart civIn order to appease an ex friend and covert op whose been hunting Nikolas and Ben, Nikolas heads back to Russia and his past on an errand of mercy, leaving an uncertain Ben  behind with Radulf.  Left at loose ends and missing  Nikolas terribly, Ben lights out on his own, this time to Denmark to learn Nikolas’s language and visit some of the places where Nikolas grew up. Soon Ben settles in, making friends in the small town and become prolific (or so he thinks) in Danish.  Alone and certain that Nikolas is in danger in Russia, Ben doesn’t see the enemy that is much closer to home to the peril of them all.

And when the danger explodes, it leaves them all, including Nikolas, permanently scarred and forever changed.

What an amazing series!  With Conscious Decisions of the Heart, John Wiltshire manages to give his readers a frightening mystery, a suspenseful drama, a heartbreaking romance and an exploration of the island of Aeroe, in Denmark (an excellent reason to google what is said to be one of the most beautiful spots in Denmark), all these things rolled into one gripping tale of love, passion, and suspense.

That cover alone is a clue this is not a story for the faint of heart.  Picking up after Love is a Stranger, both Ben and Nikolas find themselves in uncertain times, their previous lives in shambles and, for the first time, trying to be honest with each other about their feelings and new relationship.  But with these two complicated men who have secrets the way other men have tee times, the past is never completely out of the picture.  It will cause Nikolas to travel to Russia on their behalf so he and Ben may feel safe as well as to find some measure of closure in a relationship from his past.

Wiltshire does such an excellent job with these characters.  Already beautifully fleshed out and believable, he continues to build layers upon layers into each of their personalities and histories, peeling away some traits to reveal others lying just underneath, a pattern that continues with each man’s history and background.  Just when you think you might have some idea of how a character will behave or where he comes from, Wiltshire demolishes that bit of certainty with an astonishing new fact or shocking denouement!

And no, I absolutely won’t go into any of that here.  Sacrilege, indeed.

Conscious Decisions of the Heart feels like a magician’s act, full of sleight of hand tricks that lull you into thinking you know where the dangers are to be found and that you have a handle on the plot, all while the feature illusion has been forming and explodes with a ferocity you didn’t foresee (and neither do the characters).    And there is more than one.  It takes your breathe away.  And every aspect of this story is so well written and plotted, it just works! I loved all the action and adventure and, yes, shear terror, that the author brings to this story.  And some will break your heart.  Really, John Wiltshire, how could you do that to….sigh.

But what is equally astonishing is that while all the major elements are in flux, Ben and Nikolas become steadier, more committed to each other and their relationship. You watch the progress, the small and large steps, and your commitment to these men and their story just gets deeper. How I love this series.

I would have given this book a 5 star rating (it deserves it) but it definitely can’t be read on its own.  Part of the power (and Wiltshire’s puzzle in the making) comes from reading all parts in the order they were written.  Each book continues to build on the  previous story and without some of the back knowledge, balancing and understanding all these pieces and personalities becomes problematic.    So, if new to the series, run, lope, gallop, whatever, back to Love is a Stranger, then move onto to this story.  I am one step ahead and more books (and reviews) will be coming!  Join me along the way!

This is seriously addictive stuff here, and one of my highly recommended reads!
