A Stella Advent Calendar Review Day 16: Crashing the Party (2016 Advent Calendar – Bah Humbug) by Ginger Streusel

RATING 4 out of 5 stars

crashing-the-partyRetail workers and evil never get a day off, and traveling printer salesman Kale Green is no exception. He might look like a Jolly Green Giant, but he can be a real Grinch. Working on the holidays can dampen anyone’s spirits, and on top of that, a sleepy Georgia town has it out for Kale and his car. From fender-benders to flat tires, Kale and his trusty company car Bessie suffer through it all.

While everyone else enjoys holiday parties, Kale drives down south to demo printers. Business is good, but on Christmas Eve, the weather turns bad. A few patches of ice put an end to Kale’s Christmas plans—a night alone with his video games. While Kale waits for the police, his only consolation is the company of fellow driver Wes Armstrong. As festive as a Christmas tree and as jolly as Kris Kringle, Wes proves unexpectedly charming. Kale never thought he’d crash right into a crush.

Crashing the Party was a surprise, I didn’t know the author and was a little skeptical when I understood the story was told using flashbacks. I admit I’m not a fan of this kind of writing choice, nonetheless in this case it was a winner.

I deeply liked the writing style, the book is so well written it made the reading easy to follow and quick. It made me actually like those flashbacks, because the author let me know how they met, how they flirted and how Bessie, the car, was hurt more than once. Crashing the Party left me in a good mood, I love stories about established couples so reading about Kale and Wes knowing they got their HEA and are celebrating another year together, was really beautiful.

I feel free to recommend this holiday short by Ginger Streusel.

The cover art by Paul Richmond is awesome like everything he works on.

A MelanieM Release Day Review:Holly & Hockey Boots by V.L. Locey

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

holly-hockey-bootsMinor league goalie Adam Seiger is a nice guy. He’s kind, cute, and a little quirky (but show me a goalie who isn’t) and he loves to interact with fans. During a meet and greet after a game Adam meets Cason Reyes, a hard-working young man with stunning amber eyes and a smile as sweet as a candy cane. Desperate to see Cason again, Adam does something more than a little naughty.

To add insult to the egg nog, it appears that one little white lie may end Adam’s chance of having a merry Christmas with a new boyfriend. Will he end up with nothing but a lump of coal in his stocking, instead of the man who owns his heart?

Adorable, totally adorable.  That describes both the story and the main character of Adam Seiger.  Gay, black, Canadian, minor league hockey player, adopted by his Aunt and Uncle when young, this man could have been a Mountie, he’s so sweet, nice, and yes, adorable…even in his faults.  That would be the lag time in between what comes out his mouth and the time it takes his brain to think it might be a bad idea to say that.    His brain goes awandering while the mouth just motors on.  Not always a great thing as Adam finds out when he spies the man of his dreams during a game.

I’ve enjoyed V.L. Locey’s stories before.  The author always manages to put in enough interesting quirks to their characters and storylines that it makes me take notice.  Extra spice, a V.L. Locey punch as it were.  Its the same here.  The other character?  Cason Reyes, is biracial with a fascinating background and a nephew to raise.  Both men have background that actually made me growl in frustation that I didn’t get enough time with each man’s family or get to delve deep enough into their stories.  They are that interesting and the people in their families we get to know are believable enough that we want more time with them too.

Other special touches?  The interaction with the team members.  Ray, Adam’s roomate with his own special kink?  Hilarious!  Plus I liked their acceptance of a gay teammate without any special acknowledgement or fanfare while mentioning that might not be realistic in the major leagues.  Nice reality check.  And then there was the holly branches.  I’ll leave the significance of that to the story.

I’d love to see Locey continue this into a series or at least give us a followup  story.  These two certainly deserve it.  We need to see what happens next.  I want more!  After reading this, you will too.

Cover art doesn’t really pull me to the book,  Doesn’t say holidays, and doesn’t really speak to the story.

A VVivacious Advent Calendar Review Day 12: #ChristmasHatesYouToo by E.F. Mulder

Rating – 2 Stars out of 5

christmashatesyoutoo-by-e-f-mulderNoel Beebe is unlucky in love as can be demonstrated by the fact that he never even got to see the last guy he fell in love with. Now Noel is back on social networking sites to get another chance at love and Ethan might just be the answer.

Ethan and Noel bond over the fact that they both hate their birthdays.  So as a colossal fuck you to Christmas for ruining Noel’s birthday they spend an entire day denouncing the holiday spirit in the air. When the videos of Noel making a very good impression of Scrooge get viral on the internet, Noel is in for a world of hate. But looks like Noel’s infamy might finally get him some luck in his love life.

This story comes across as a very disjointed read. Personally I just couldn’t understand or get behind the sequence of events in this story because to me it felt like the author decided on what would happen first and then went back and thought about how this would/could further the story. So the story reads like a series of events awkwardly finishing in an ending which feels unnatural.

What I couldn’t get behind in this story was Noel’s social networking as a means to meet new people. I mean I guess it might be the new future but Noel didn’t take any precautions to safeguard his interests, I mean he gave his address to two men without verifiably knowing anything about the other two. Also I feel that the blurb of this story is misleading, I thought I was going to read a story about a guy taking revenge on Christmas for overshadowing his birthday but instead we get a guy who actually loves Christmas and is instead dragged along by another guy who wants him to denounce Christmas just for fun.

A lot of the side characters felt like an afterthought. Initially when we meet Noel he comes across as a insanely optimistic loner reeking of desperation, the kind of guy who spends all his time on social networking sites, talks to his dog like he doesn’t have anybody else to talk to and most incriminating of all spends days in an online relationship where he reveals too much information and even ends up falling in love only to have the guy vanish on him. But by the end of the story Noel has eight siblings, a best friend and even some awesome work friends who he is very close too and not only that he seems to be involved a lot in social causes and in the lives of his god-daughters. Now I don’t know about you but for me Noel’s latter characteristics seemed to oddly contradict his former ones.

Overall this story is awkward and its main character is too gullible and comes across as a push over.

Cover Art by L. C. Chase. I liked the cover a lot; it was a nice representation of the story.

An Alisa Advent Calendar Review Day 9: Pixies and Paperwork by Cassia Rose

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

pixies-and-paperworkMicheal Donovan’s family has kept the peace between mortal and magical realms for generations, but Micheal skipped out on glory for other plans. He finished school, got a nine-to-five, and tried to fit in. When his cousin meets an unfortunate end on All Hallows’ Eve, Micheal abruptly inherits the position of Riftkeeper, along with all the prestige and responsibility he didn’t want. Estranged from his family, Micheal never learned the details of the job. All the grumpy, ancestral spirit now possessing his goldfish can tell him is that a mistake could be catastrophic. Micheal isn’t feeling the holiday cheer, and coworkers’ attempts to encourage him only add to a headache of magical proportions. To make matters worse, Ryan Nickles, Micheal’s colleague and cubicle neighbor, has assembled enough Christmas decorations to attract more pixies than Micheal can hide.

When Micheal’s attempts to find the Winter Court on the week of the solstice leave him with nothing but a bad cold, he fears he’ll be the first Riftkeeper to break the ancient contracts. He’s too stressed to handle Ryan’s attempts to get him into the holiday spirit, but Ryan might know more about the magic of the season than Micheal realizes.

To Micheal his life has just been shot to hell when he inherits the position of Riftkeeper, it’s made worse when he can’t get any answers as to what he is supposed to be doing.  It takes him getting sick for his barriers to be down enough that he doesn’t immediately push Ryan away and realizes he may have the answers to all of his questions.

Micheal and Ryan have worked together for a few years, but Ryan has never been able to break through Micheal’s shell.  When Micheal needs help finding the location of the Winter Court along with a gift Ryan steps in to help when he realizes that he can.  I loved the Micheal is able to let his guard down enough, almost too late, for him to see that Ryan can help him.  This story has a simple HFN ending, but I’m not sure I understand the universe in which the story takes place; I felt a bit confused throughout it.

Cover is ok for the story.

About Angel Voices

One frigid winter night a week before Christmas, college student Will stumbles into a church during choir practice, bruised by his own father’s hands. He’s out of the closet now—there’s no going back since his fundamentalist father learned the truth—but he’s also out of a home, a family, and a future. Will has nowhere to turn. No one to care.

Except . . . Will’s roommate, Quinn, cares. Maybe too much. He’s been attracted to Will since they moved in together, but never dreamed his crush was gay. With Will’s life in pieces, Quinn doesn’t want to push. He also knows he has more experience than Will, who’s never even been kissed.

Then Will’s father makes a reappearance, and Will has to learn to trust his heart more than the voices of his past. But it’s the season of miracles, faith, and hope, and Quinn is determined to teach Will how to love and be loved.

About Rowan Speedwell

An unrepentant biblioholic, Rowan Speedwell spends half her time pretending to be a law librarian, half her time pretending to be a database manager, half her time pretending to be a fifteenth-century Aragonese noblewoman, half her time . . . wait a minute . . .  Hmm.  Well, one thing she doesn’t pretend to be is good at math.  She is good at pretending, though.

In her copious spare time (hah) she does needlework, calligraphy and illumination, and makes jewelry.  She has a master’s degree in history from the University of Chicago, is a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and lives in a Chicago suburb with the obligatory Writer’s Cat and way too many books.

A Stella Review: Reindeer Games by Kenzie Cade

RATING 4 out of 5 stars

Reindeer GamesDashing von Stride has one thing on his mind: winning the window display contest for the Miracle on Main Christmas Contest. His plans are set and ready—and then he walks into his toy store, Reindeer Games, to find a sleigh that shouldn’t be there. The mystery sleigh sparks a new plan, however, and now all Dash needs is the perfect Santa to model his display after.

This year, the pranks with his reindeer have gotten out of hand. Instead of preparing for the Big Day, Niklaus Kringle is hunting for his missing sleigh. Locating it should have been easy, but games easily won are seldom worth playing…

I discovered Kenzie Cade with the Portland Pack Chronicles series and when I saw this new holiday short, I was soon curious about it, especially cause… have you seen the cover? Impossible to resist.

Reindeer Games is the story of the toymaker and toy store owner Dash, who lives in a fabolous town, Wassail, where Christmas is highly celebrated and the annual competion of the best window display is coming. Dash is tired of his usual second place. This year he gets a surprise, a sleigh materialized out of nowhere in the middle of his store.

Niklaus is the Prince of the Kingdom of North pole, he comes to Wassail looking for his lost sleigh and  finds his mate. But is Dash ready for a future that it’s waiting for him to learn who he really is?

Reindeer Games (perfect title not just cause it’s the toy store name but for the role a naughty reindeer will have) is a great holiday short. It’s well written and engaging from the start. The dialogues are good and even if it is short, the author gave us some important background on the MCs and amazing second characters, like Tinsel and Pumpkin, the guard team, or Wendy, Dash’s best friend.  It is a sweet and cute reading, I’d have loved to have a couple of chapters more of course, but I felt pretty satisfied at the end, because Reindeer Games is traditional and original at the same time. It filled my heart with its good vibes.

If you’re looking for a magical story on your holidays, quick and dreamy, give this one a chance. Highly recommended!

The cover art by London Burden is what caught my attention first, it is super cute and well done.

A MelanieM Advent Story Review: Mission Mistletoe By Jessica Payseur

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5

Mission Mistletoe coverCaptain Archer Pfeil’s current assignment has been nothing but one long string of disasters. As if being dumped right before Christmas wasn’t enough, the mounting misfortunes indicate he’ll be out of a job by the end of his mission.

But it’s difficult to salvage the assignment with Ambassador Ilin a’dlen Jhex around, pushing all Archer’s buttons. He struggles to keep his distance from the out-of-bounds ambassador, but Jhex has other plans in mind….

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2015 Advent Calendar package “Sleigh Ride”

I always like to see what the unusual holiday short story has to offer so Jessica Payseur’s Mission Mistletoe seemed to fit the bill.  But unfortunately I think the author was trying a little too hard and crammed her story full of too many elements that took away from the holiday cheer and overloaded it with cumbersome world building that didn’t always make sense or feel necessary in a Christmas short.

Poor Captain Archer Pfeil.  His mission seems doomed with everything going wrong, from fuel to food source.  On board is an important ambassador who is evaluating the humans now pushing into their territory in the galaxy.  Payseur tells us that Ambassador Ilin a’dlen Jhex looks similar to a bat (ears, fur) but dresses like someone out of 1001 Arabian Tales. He has an unusual type of society with multiple sex partners plus he likes to sculpt. So many holes in this character..we get too much or not enough depending on the information. There is no real logic to the buildup of the species of the ambassador which is part of the problem if you want the reader to feel a connection to him.

If you look closer at the world building, more questions appear.  Why would a crew who loves its captain lie to him for a alien they don’t know anything about? Think about the trust that breaks. Under that shaky surface just lies more questions.  The characters and circumstances just don’t produce any heat, or substantial logistical groundwork needed for the reader to engage their feelings about the characters or relationship.  Thank goodness, Payseur doesn’t go for any instant love here, that would have been disastrous.

As it is, if you aren’t a scifi fan, if you don’t look too deeply or ask any questions of the world building, then this is a sort of pleasant little space romance.

Cover art by Bree Archer is nice but a little jarring, doesn’t come together as a composition, exactly like the story itself.

A Barb, the Zany Old Lady Advent Story Review: Home Is Where the Christmas Trees Are by CJane Elliot

Rating: 5 stars out of 5          ★★★★★

Sleigh Ride Advent StoryDex Crawford has moved into his sister Jan’s condo to become the guardian for her daughter, Rowan, after Jan’s death. A physical therapist who does home visits, he’s able to do his documentation from home at the end of the day so he can accommodate his neice’s schedule.  Twelve-year-old Rowan is typical of girls that age, and though unhappy, seems to love Dex, and they get along well.

When Rowan’s clarinet is stolen just before a concert, Dex accompanies her to the band room to ask the music teacher if she can borrow one.  There he meets Ed Alcott, son of one of his clients, and a man he feels he already knows based on what Mrs Alcott has said about him.  Though he can’t tell Ed he’s met his mother, he can extend a warm hand in friendship, and the two men feel the sparks fly as they greet each other.

Love at first sight? Why not?  Ed brings Christmas into Dex’s cold and lonely heart as Rowan is away spending the holidays with her grandmother.  Dex is shocked by how quickly he and Ed seem to get to know each other and how close they become within only forty-eight hours.

This story left me with a big smile on my face as the two characters who so richly deserve each other find their happiness together.  The main and secondary characters were very well developed in such a short story, and the story itself is very believable.  I highly recommend this one to add some cheer to your Christmas holidays.

A Mika Review: Him for The Holidays by Jaxx Steele

Rating: 2 stars out of 5

Him for the Holidays coverDon meets Trevor when he goes home for the holidays. Could a long distance romance be his holiday wish come true?

Donald Bradley is home for the holidays. While running an errand for his mother, he meets Trevor Oxford, who is everything Don could ask for in a man. However, Don does not intend to have any type of relationship with him. Trevor lives and works in the small town and Don lives two hundred miles away in the city. Trevor is confident and aggressive in his pursuit of Don, who is confused by Trevor’s attentiveness. Don wants to run away from Trevor and run to him at the same time.
Could a long distance romance be just what Don needs to start the New Year? Will Don accept what Trevor has to offer, giving him what he really wants this holiday season?

This was a first for me by the author. It was cute while not all the way smart. By smart I mean taking unnecessary precautions during sexual intercourse. I’m a big safe sex person during my reads unless they’re discussed between the two characters. Obviously here wasn’t. I don’t know if I liked Donald or not, I feel like I didn’t get enough of back history for him to make any kind of judgment about his personality. I knew next to nothing of Trevor as well. Apart of me feels like I started reading this in the middle, there wasn’t a beginning for any buildup to happen between the two guys. It went from one meeting, to instant gratification. Some people might appreciate that, but I just wasn’t feeling it.

I wanted to know more of Trevor, he was this guy who came back to town to help run his uncle’s store, and he was also an R.N. Like I said previously I didn’t connect with either character. I wouldn’t recommend this based as it felt incomplete. It ended… that’s it. No grand gestures, no empty promises. I don’t even know if Donald knows Trevor last name.

Cover Art by Posh Gosh. Since we never discussed the guys ages, I’m guessing these two could be seen as Donald & Trevor. They both seem kind of older than the two in the book, though and it really doesn’t invite me in.

A Mika Review:  Unwrapping Hank by Eli Easton

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Unwrapping Hank coverSloane loves a good mystery. He grew up as the son of two psychiatrists, so he finds most people tediously easy to figure out. He finds his way to Pennsylvania State University, longing for a rural experience, and ends up being lured into joining a frat by Micah Springfield, the hippest guy on campus.

Nothing in Sloane’s classes is as intriguing as Hank Springfield, Micah’s brother and fellow frat house member. Hank looks like a tough guy—big muscles, tattoos, and a beard—but his eyes are soft and sweet. He acts dumb, but he’s a philosophy major. He’s presumably straight, but then why does Sloane feel such crazy chemistry whenever Hank is around? And why does Hank hate Sloane so much?

When Sloane ends up stuck on campus over Christmas, Micah invites him to spend the holidays at their family farm in Amish country. It’s a chance to experience a true Americana Christmas–and further investigate the mystery that is Hank Springfield.

Can Sloane unlock the secrets of this family and unwrap the heart hidden inside the beefcake?

I really enjoyed this novella length book. I liked Sloane from the beginning, he was hilarious. Sloane is a freshman new pledge living in the Delta Sigma Phi at Pennsylvania State University; he is extremely cynical for such a young age. We can attribute these to his not so attentive parents, who are world class psychologist and jet setters. Sloane immediately attacked to the big buff guy with tattoos washing dishes in the frat house. Hank is that guy, I liked him, sure he seemed a little OCD-ish with the working out, but to each it’s own. I honestly didn’t see him as the frat type based on the other guys but that’s what I liked about the story.

Instantly Sloane is taken with Hank, because how could he not? This guy is a walking contradiction. I liked the little ways that Sloane tried to figure Hank out. It was down right funny at times. Micah is definitely a character that steals certain scenes. He’s Hank’s older brother and president of the frat, he also a sweet, down to earth guy. I liked Micah because he was super supportive to both guys.

Sloane’s parents end up ditching him for Christmas, thus leaving Sloane all alone in the States. Who comes to the rescue, Micah of course? I don’t want to give away the rest but there are definitely sweet moments, electricity moments, and tears to me.  An Amish sighting and all types of pie. There are instances where Sloane doesn’t know what to do, but between Micah being extremely helpful and Hank playing coy, I felt we all were winning. I hope Eli decides to give us Micah’s story because I need to know his decisions.

I definitely recommend Unwrapping Hank by Eli Easton.  It has terrific characters and enjoyable plot.

Cover Art by Reese Dante. Actually I think the guy on the cover looked way older then “20 years” old. He looks like a 30 yr old gym rat; I did like the gift and the dog aspect.
