Excerpt

A sadness crept into Liam’s features as he shifted his face away from Danverse. He was feeling sane again, but an incredible shame came along with the method.

“I’m fine,” he said. Liam was a strong man, but being in the presence of the man who had seen him at his weakest, at his most unguarded, unsettled him. It wasn’t the first session with his best friend, but this time had been more severe than any in the past. The force of his climax was devastating and mind-numbing; he had never come so hard before. The need for the pain and submission to release the rending guilt made Liam feel soiled. Not because he liked it so much, but because he couldn’t be in love with the man who could bring that out in him.

Danverse had, on more than one occasion, been witness to the demons Liam harbored; his ability to help was one thing that drew Liam to him. Their sessions beat down the guilt and terrors, but it wasn’t right. It wasn’t romance that brought them together. They used each other to find something they couldn’t find anywhere else, and they both knew it. Liam needed more than that even if he sometimes felt he didn’t deserve it. They would always be connected in some fashion, but life mates? No. In the end that wasn’t possible.

The captain’s firm hand wrapped around Liam’s biceps, pivoting him and forcing his attention.

“Did I take you too far?” Danverse’s focused blue eyes bore into Liam.

“No.”

“Liam. Talk to me. I know I pushed you hard last night, but it’s how I read it.” The words were quiet, meant only for Liam.

“I know, Marc. You didn’t do anything wrong. But it’s still too fresh.” Liam turned his head away and raised his outstretched hand. “Give me a little space. I’ll be all right. I just need to clear my head a bit. Don’t worry. I’ll be back in plenty of time for cargo changeover.”

With a gentle pull, Liam released himself from Danverse’s hand. It didn’t take much; the captain didn’t resist. Liam put some distance between them as he flagged a transport. He chanced a glance over his shoulder as Danverse stood unmoving, his demeanor deflating. Liam turned away when he couldn’t look anymore at the pleading stare in his best friend’s eyes.

Once he discovered M/M fiction, a whole new world opened with new possibilities. Why couldnít you have fantastic and dynamic tales with an M/M cast? He started reading the online tales of authors like, Night Tempest, Rob Colton, and Alicia Nordwell, which only fueled within him the need to create. Eventually he found GayAuthors.org, and with a little coercive nudge from Night Tempest, started sharing his tales with an unexpected level of positive response. That experience and support gave him the courage to cross his fingers and aim for the world of M/M publishing.

Superheroes seem to be having a moment right now. A big one.

They’re everywhere. They’re in blockbuster movies (hello my Avengers, it’s been far too long), they’re getting their own shows on TV, they’re on t-shirts and backpacks and bags of Doritos. Yes, I can now eat Captain America-endorsed Doritos, and that actually does incline me to grab a bag. I mean…it’s Chris Evans. Yes, please. Then there are the comics, don’t even get me started on the comics and how much money I’ve spent and how many different timelines there are, I will go insane if I think about it too hard.

I love superheroes, from the staunch to the sly, but I’ve also got a major soft spot for those who are endowed with great power and choose not to accept that great responsibility along with it. Or if they do, they do it for what we’d think of as the “wrong reasons.” Money, notoriety, the sheer thrill that comes from using your power for yourself and no one else. Selfish reasons. Personal reasons. These are the sorts of motives that turn a potential hero into a villain, but that doesn’t necessarily make a person bad.

These are the people who take a shitty situation and make the best of it, or decide not to let someone else make their decisions and run their lives. You don’t have to be The Joker to make villainy interesting. Be a nihilist, be a hedonist, be the Jackie Estacado of the criminal underground. This was the sort of character I wanted to focus on in the first book of the Panopolis series, but naturally I couldn’t start right there. Instead I took a normal guy named Edward Dinges and stuck him in Panopolis, the city of Heroes and Villains. I gave him a decent job, an average history and an overall humdrum life, and then…I made him fall in love.

With a villain.

Panopolis is a rough place to be an average Joe. I came here looking for adventure and excitement, but nobody cares about one more normal guy in a city filled with super-powered heroes. The closest I’ve come to glory is working in a bank that villains often rob.

But then I maybe accidentally-on-purpose helped a villain escape the hero who was trying to save the day. Imagine my shock when, a week later, that villain asked me out for coffee. One date turned into more, and now I’m head over heels in love with Raul.

Falling in love with the guy dubbed the Mad Bombardier isn’t without its downsides, though. I’ve had to deal with near-death encounters with other villains, awkwardly flirtatious heroes who won’t take no for an answer, and a lover I’m not sure I can trust. It’s getting to the point where I know I’ll have to make a choice: side with the heroes, or stand fast by my villain.

Either way, I think my days as a normal guy are over.

Cari Z was a bookworm as a child and remains one to this day. In an effort to combat her antisocial reading behavior, she did all sorts of crazy things, from competitive gymnastics to alligator wresting (who even knew that was legal!) to finally joining the Peace Corps, which promptly sent her and her husband to the wilds of West Africa, stuck them in a hut, and said, “See ya!” She also started writing in earnest then, because when you have no television, no car and nothing to read other than a French translation of Twilight, you find ways of entertaining yourself. She’s been back in Colorado for a while now, but stuck with the writing.

Soon Alex may have to choose between his mission and his love for a man deeply involved in the hateful organization that Alex has worked so hard to take down.

Where Willows Won’t Grow is a freebie written for the 2014 M/M Romance Group’s DRitC event. Don’t make the mistake of letting this excellent read slip through the cracks because of a misguided thought that freebies are of lesser quality than books we pay for. Because I’m here to tell you, this story is an amazing read from start to finish and far more enjoyable than a large percentage of books I’ve spent good money on.

Set on a sensuously dark space station full of intrigue, sex and aliens, this story hooked me in from page one. The main characters are complex, well-drawn, damaged guys—one a human and one an alien. It’s hard to express how much I adore Illythe. I found him to be a uniquely memorable character that stayed with me long after I finished reading the story. And on the other side of the coin we have the ultra creepy Scion who made my skin crawl. Want a bad guy you love to hate? Yeah, well, I absolutely detested this dude about two minutes after he came on page. Ok, maybe less.

Reading Willows was by turns dark, exhausting, frustrating, horrifying, amazing, fascinating, and touching. It took me through the wringer with these characters, but kept me rapt the whole darn time. I simply couldn’t put it down.
I read it twice, a few months apart, because one reading wasn’t enough–the characters called me back. So if you haven’t read it, what are you waiting for? Didn’t I mention that it’s free?

Teeka fought not to fidget as Cordell paid the young man and unrolled the message sheet. He didn’t like the way Cordell frowned and curbed the impulse to snatch the moss paper away and read it himself.

Cordell met his gaze. “The Corsair MD Stardawn clipped a runner on rocks on the way to Kotek Stronghold from Cyrus. When she arrived at Kotek Stronghold, she couldn’t leave. Most passengers got to Cyrus on the other corsairs that had room, but with cramped quarters. Passengers that chose to stay at the stronghold received assistance with lodgings and a voucher for travel after Daymonth.”

“Does it say anything about the passengers on the Sandqueen?” Teeka clutched the edge of the table.

“There is no Senior Hunter Quill Mayer listed on the Sandqueen’s manifest.” Cordell glanced again at the paper. “The Dock Assistant says that livestock wouldn’t have been accommodated due to space constraints.”

Teeka took a deep breath and took the paper from Cordell. He pretended to read it, but tears blurred his vision.

“Maybe he hired a corsair from Kotek City to Reghdad like you did,” Cordell pointed out.

The price of a corsair would be out of anyone’s reach unless they were like Teeka’s father, a minister with the wealth to pay for it and the political pull to be able to hire it without any other passengers. Corsairs that made the run from Kotek City would be stuffed full of passengers and luggage for families journeying to caverns along the route; no one would take one all the way to Reghdad. It wouldn’t make sense.

Quill didn’t make it. He couldn’t leave the truffles alone at the stronghold.

Teeka was alone for the Daymonth.

This was my first read by A.J. Ridges. I found myself liking it a lot in the beginning and then it slowly became okay. Reading this, I was confused by the blurb a little because of the whole male dominant planet thing. I didn’t see at all during the book, but what we had was okay. Krial was a likable character. I loved his monologues in the beginning to everything that was happening. Right off the bat we are introduced to Krial during “The Release” and it’s as invasive as it seems. I was laughing again at Krial he had funny moments, automatically we are introduced to the source of all of Krial’s fantasies Dax his Trainer, mentor and all around alpha male. I found that entire scene erotic and funny especially considering what was happening. For a novella I found it entertaining. I didn’t like how Krial was seen as an Alpha male from the beginning and then almost at the turn of the next page he was a submissive as a trained sub. It wasn’t that I disliked it, I just wish he could have stayed as dominant as he was in the beginning. I liked this book, looking forward to a full length novel from this author.

Cover Art by ? I liked the cover a lot. It was simple and picture perfect to what I thought Krial looked like.

A BJ Review: Song of the Navigator by Astrid Amara

Despite his ability and the glamour and wealth it brings him, his life is routine save for a few bright spots: his birds and his passion for Cruz Arcadio. On the day of his birthday celebration, Tover’s world changes irrevocably when he’s betrayed and kidnapped by none other than the man he loves.

This book isn’t for the faint of heart. There’s extreme violence, torture and betrayal. It’s harsh and hard to read in parts, BUT it’s also romantic, poignant and absolutely amazing.

Seldom outside of an epic fantasy series have I encountered such excellent world-building. From the DK station to the green and vibrant Carida, the settings are so vibrantly alive and peopled with characters so real that I felt like I could step right into the book and shake their hands (or punch them out as the case may be). Beautifully written. I loved Tover’s from the start, spoiled and aware of how special he was, of his tremendous worth, yet not really full of himself. Coming from a pampered lifestyle where he’s almost worshipped, I didn’t expect such strength from him. Tover’s never weak or whiny despite all that happens to him. The betrayal itself almost seems to wound him worse than the physical torment he’s subjected to.

I found myself hating Cruz right along with Tover, hating him with a fiery passion. What could redeem a man who could betray the one who’d trusted him enough to risk all to save his life? What indeed. Tover begins to understand that the safe world he thought he was living in may all be built on lies. Only then do we begin to get a picture of the real Cruz. By the end of this story, I adored both of these characters and would gladly embrace a second book with these characters.

I cannot recommend this book more highly to those who appreciate darker reads. It’s my first read by this author and definitely will not be my last.

In the afterward, the author indicates the possibility of stories set in this world eventually coming from two other authors as well, Ginn Hale and Nicole Kimberling. I’ll be crossing my fingers.

Cover Artist  Kanaxa. The cover wonderfully encompassing the elements of the story. The two very different figures standing isolated but touching amidst the backdrops of space and other worlds. Joined against huge odds. Best of all maybe is the embracing warmth of the colors, highlighting the passion and emotional arousal this story evokes.

A Mika Review: The Harvest: Taken (The Harvest #1) by M.A. Church

In the year 2050 mankind’s never-ending quest for proof life exists in the universe is answered—in the form of massive space ships that appear without warning above the capitals of all major nations. The name of their planet is Tah’Nar—and is dying. The United States sets up a lottery system, and each young man between the ages of twenty-three and twenty-eight is assigned a number. Once a year, for the next five years, numbers will be drawn and a new set of one thousand males will be collected. The media coined the expression ‘The Harvest’ for when the Tah’Narian’s collect these young men.

 Captain Keyno Landium Shou is a Tah’Narian starship captain who has been granted the right to take a mate, any mate, he wants during the last harvest on Earth. Dale was seventeen when the aliens first appeared. His parents assumed he’d be safe since the final collection would be done before he turned twenty-three. He didn’t fall within the guidelines established, so they took for granted he had nothing to fear.
 They were wrong.

This book had ridiculousness all over it, and I loved every second of it. C’mon,  it had me at mpreg.  Something I’ve been enjoying more and more. M.A. Church is a new author to me, and while I constantly rolled my eyes at the silly notions to things that happened in the book I really enjoyed it. Honestly, I felt like this was a mf book the entire time. It was silly, but I liked it for a first time mpreg story. Dale wasn’t supposed to be in the lottery for Humans take for The Harvest. He basically was kidnapped illegally. He went from being pissed off to protective in 96 hours to Keyno the alien that had him Taken.

It was a big production between these two, but again I love it. I loved it for it’s sugary sweetness that was in the book. Dale didn’t have to wait long for some since of familiarity, on the ship was his best friend Chad that got Harvested the previous year, you would think Dale would have been happy but of course he thought Chad was crazy for thinking Space was his home. Well after their “talk” about what was expected Dale had a change of heart. From here on out it was sugary sweetness. Keyno was a sweetheart who has wanted Dale since meeting Chad last year. I actually liked the aliens here.

Of course Dale wouldn’t be Dale without the problems he presented in the beginning, because of his health he had to be Double Dosed so his body could adhere to the changes of the pregnancy. I found myself laughing and smiling throughout the book. I definitely read it because of the smut, and sugary sweetness involved in the story. Also the King’s Husband pulled at my heart strings. What do you know Dale made quite the impression on these aliens. I would recommend to lovers of fantasy, mpreg, sugary sweet smut readers.

Cover Artist Lou Harper had a perfect picture of Dale after his slight alteration. I liked it, he even got use to it. It was fitting for the story.

Growing up, Blazell and Buck, princes of Tamuro, a member of the Galaxy Peace Allegiance, hear of an ancient prophecy that a member of the Versuthion family will bring about the reemergence of the humanoid race. Buck is kidnapped and tortured for information about the location of this family. Blazell, the older brother, blames himself for not protecting Buck. After his father dies and Blazell becomes king, he makes a vow to find the missing Versuthion family.

Talon Versuthion’s  parents were murdered. Later adopted by an Edifican couple, he grows up with his Edifican sister who is also adopted. Just getting by in life, Talon takes a job as an intergalactic cargo transporter with his sister. One day, they take off for Strawxig, a planet of snake shifters. As they begin their approach to the planet, their shuttle is blown off course by a space storm. They are sent thousands of light years off course and crash land into Tamuro.

The Alpha King Blazell arrives just as the male regains consciousness and declares that the man is his mate. Talon, upon hearing thus slips back into the dark. Blazell then goes about the process of making Talon his consort and vows to find the other members of his family. Talon meanwhile must adjust to life as the spouse of the King of Tumaro. With the help of his sister and Blazell’s assistant, Talon must navigate the court and those who seek to overthrow both him as consort and Blazell as king.

This is the first book in Vicktor Alexander’s Passion’s Hero series. One of the most important things a writer must do when writing science fiction is to build his world. The author does an excellent job of this. To start his book, he provides readers with what he calls a “cheat sheet.” In it, he describes the various planets and the people, plants and animals that abound on them. He also defines some terms which come up later in the book. I found this to be very helpful while reading.

The author also elaborates on the wolf shifter culture as he sees it. As with most shifter books, you find your alphas, betas, omegas and elders. He also includes other ranks of wolves and sets out the various functions of those ranks. On top of this, he adds royalty to the wolf hierarchy. Thus, we have Alpha Kings, Alpha Princes (the next in line to the throne) and Beta Princes which is essentially the Spare Heir.

While there is the usual instant attraction that is involved in shifter mate romances, the author shows that this is a real relationship where the couple gets upset at each other, doubts in the mind of the non shifter about the relationship and the need to please your mate. Also, Talon bristles every time he is addressed by his royal title as he sees it as antiquated.

I would highly recommend this engaging first book in Passion’s Hero series and I look forward to its follow-ups.
