A MelanieM Advent Story Review: Somewhere to Be by Amy Yip

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Sleigh Ride Advent StoryJamie Goh’s life took a downturn when he lost his job, and a bad relationship left him disillusioned and afraid to trust again. But his friends and family want to see him happy, even if he’s turned off by the idea of dating. Following a Christmas disaster that proves the UK really can’t handle snow, Jamie discovers not everyone is out to hurt him—and loyalty means something to some people—when a sweet guy goes above and beyond for him.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2015 Advent Calendar package “Sleigh Ride”.

Amy Yip uses every bit of her 37 pages to layer in Jamie’s multi racial family, his wonderful mixture of cultures, Dad from Chinese Malay, Mum from Devon and his speech a natural polyglot of both. It flows so beautifully as we grasp the depth of Jamie’s broken heart, his fear of moving forward and the joy that  meeting Nick brings him.

Somewhere to Be by Amy Yip is one of those stories that is bigger than its pages.  You get the feeling of place, Brighton in winter, grey seas, empty beaches, punishing winds and yet, Jamie loves it. Yip gives you Jamie’s marvelous Goh family, a takeout Chinese food business and combines it with two men trying for common ground and perhaps a future together.  Its realistic, beautifully described and full of heart.  And I wanted more at the end of the story.  I wanted a place at the table and to be a part of their holiday celebration.  You will too.  Grab this story up and join in the romance and wonder as well.

A MelanieM Advent Story Review: Fireworks and Resolutions by Leandra Dohman

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Sleigh Ride Advent StorySomething big happened at the office Christmas party between Joseph and Carter, his coworker and ultimate crush. Too bad Joseph doesn’t remember it. Now, it’s New Years Eve, and Joseph finds himself locked in the bathroom with Carter. Joseph doesn’t understand why his natural confidence fizzles out whenever Carter is around, but the man reduces him to an awkward mess. If he can just find the courage to be himself, there might be more fireworks in his future than the ones they watch from the balcony.

Fireworks and Resolutions by Leandra Dohman is short, cute and very like a Christmas sugar cookie. Its very much like you would expect and yet you are so happy to see it and it tastes so good.

Leandra Dohman  takes the holiday office party and gives it a sweet happy ending instead of the smarmy, regretful one it normally gets.  Cute and awkward meets tall and handsome but it works, you find it sweet and adorable and yes, the ending is full of fireworks.

I liked the characters, the scenes really do move very quickly and the story is over in a snap or should that be in a blink of an eye.  If you like holiday stories, you will like this little romance.

Cover notes are not included unless the cover is different from the generic one done by Paul Richmond.

A Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review: Let Go of Loneliness by Edward Kendrick

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

This is a fairly short, very sweet romance between two older men, perfect for fans of older men falling in love.

Let Go of Loneliness coverFifty-plus-year-old Byron Randall has relocated to take a job as archivist for the local museum, and as he’s moving in to his new condo he’s observed by Jonah Hyland, fifty-five-year-old high end real estate agent, who also lives in the building. One thing leads to another as the two bump into each other a number of times, and they become friends when they find they have so much in common.

After workouts in the gym, a shared dinner at a restaurant, and finally a delicious meal prepared by Byron, they find that their relationship can be more than just friends. Byron hasn’t had anyone in his life in a long time, and Jonah broke up with his money-grabbing boyfriend six months before, so both men are free to date. Though Jonah’s former boyfriend makes an appearance in the story, his meeting with Jonah is more of an apology than an attempt to come between him and Byron.

This story, as I said, is fairly short and definitely sweet. The only thing that bothered me is that after just a few short weeks, the men ended up declaring their love for each other. I think it would have been more palatable had they simply decided to see where their relationship might go. The insta-love didn’t seem to fit with their personalities or their life circumstances.

But nevertheless, I would recommend the story to those who enjoy a sweet romance between older men. The story has no explicit sex scenes and would be perfect for curling up to read on a rainy afternoon.

Cover art by Written Ink Designs depicts headshots of two older men in the upper panel, the title in script across the center, and a cityscape in the lower panel. It’s so attractive, it’s what made me decide I needed to read this book.

A Mika Review: One Snowy Night by Louise Lyons

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

onesnowynight-savoyfontMain character, Keith Brambles, is an up and coming British singer. He has had one disastrous first date after another, finding most men are only interested because of who he is. After yet another failed meeting, he sets off for home, driving too fast for the conditions. He loses control of his car in the snow and finds himself stranded – with no mobile phone signal and an outfit completely unsuitable for braving the freezing conditions.

Just as Keith has begun to think he’s destined to spend a night in his car, possibly suffering from hypothermia, a potential rescuer arrives, but Keith wonders whether he might have more to fear from the man, than the weather.

I enjoyed this sexy short novel.  One Snowy Night by Louise Lyons is my first read by this author, and it makes me want to venture into more of her writing. I liked the characters. However, I wanted more of the story, and wish it was a full length novel. I was glad to see the author was different in her representation of Keith’s love interest. I think Keith expected Mike to be some bigoted biker guy, and was gladly shown otherwise. I liked the contrast between both guys, not just in looks but personality either. Mike was sweet, and very protective during the time that Keith was there. I liked Keith as well. I’d love to see these guys in a full length novel some times, or maybe another short.

Cover Art by ?: I did not understand the link between the story or cover. It did not match up to anything in the story at all. I think it’s nice, but very misleading.

A BJ Review: Perfect Day by Josh Lanyon

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

Perfect Day coverOn a camping trip, Wyatt lets the L word slip big time during a hot and heavy session. Unfortunately, he’s well aware that his lover, Graham, is far from over his last boyfriend, Jase, and thus his declaration isn’t going to sit well.

What ensues is a short, sweet and perfect little story that had me teary eyed nearly from page one. In only twenty-eight pages, this ran the gamut from breaking my heart to making it soar and came complete with all the tentative stages of hope in between! Josh Lanyon writes beautifully. Darn it all, I wish I could use words like this for just one day… now that would be my perfect day.

A BJ Review: Wedding Favors by Josh Lanyon

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Wedding Favors coverWyatt and Graham are getting married. Or are they? With the wedding just days away, Wyatt is the one having trouble committing this time around.

Starts out by making me laugh and quickly re-affirming how much I love these two guys. Minutes later, the angst sets in. Lanyon takes me from laughter to sinking heart at lightning speed. I swear I actually felt my smile turn upside down as I read the first few pages of this.

This story takes place largely inside Wyatt’s head as he desperately tries to figure out what’s making him have cold feet over marrying the man he loves. I could relate to Graham’s frustration, hurt and anger extremely well. But what I adored about the story was how Graham didn’t go all angsty and dramatic. He kept his cool and patiently gave Wyatt space and time to figure things out. Rather than overreacting and bailing on Wyatt, which could have made things so much worse, they actually talked! Hallelujah.

Beautifully written as I’ve come to expect from Lanyon, and I welcomed the chance to revisit with a memorable couple. For me, the sequel didn’t have quite the impact of the first book in the series, which was near perfection.

Cover Artist: ?
This cover is simple and unassuming with very little color. Not a grabber. Wouldn’t have caught my attention, especially since author name is small and in a bit of a harder to read typeface.

A MelanieM Review: Otter Madness by Winnie Jerome

Rating: 3 stars out of 5:

All I Want For Christmas Otter MaddnessOtter shifter Bryon is not happy.  His terrible boss wants him to work on Christmas and his mage boyfriend has been distant and uncommunicative lately.  What is an wereotter to do?  Get in trouble, that’s what.  When Byron goes snooping around his boyfriend’s workshop, he accidentally unleashes a second Bryon.  Now with two Bryons on the loose, can his boyfriend Lucas handle two mischievous, highly-sexed shifters just in time for Christmas?

Uh…wow.  Otter Madness is a perfect title for this wild concoction of a holiday story.  It contains nothing less than two wereotters ( should I say one were otter and one wereotter doppleganger), a homophobic boss, a mage boyfriend who is also a Dom, and quite a bit of bdsm toys and kinky sex scenes.  Mix that all together in 27 pages and you end up with a wild mess of a Christmas tale with some very funny elements, some sexy kinky bits and some things that are just so discordant that the story goes awry.

For me the best scenes in this story are the ones with Bryon in his otter form.  Jerome manages to convey the playfulness, the joy, and willy-nilly scatteredness of an otter in motion during these scenes.  But for every scene that reveals just how great it must be to be an otter rolling about in the towels, Jerome then gives us something to shudder at. A homophobic boss who is so unpleasant (calling Bryon and his boyfriend the “f” word and more) that you wonder why Bryon still wants to be employed there. . It’s just such an ugly segment, ok that whole restaurant segment is awful, that I can’t begin to understand why it was included.

Then there is the Bryon on Bryon sex, the D/s relationship between Bryon (and eventually Bryon) and Lucas, that  D/s relationship that never quite works because you don’t get enough of the personalities behind it to make it viable.  Otters are smart, playful, inventive, and high energy.  Submissive?  What is it about Bryon that makes that a part of his emotional makeup?  We haven’t a clue, especially when the second Bryon shows up and doesn’t quite seem to have the same personality even though they are supposed to be identical.  The story just continues on its messy way, dilly dallying over the kinky sex through a story that never quite comes to an end.

A wereotter is a terrible shifter to waste.  The mere creation of such a wonderful shifter elevated this story to a 3 star rating.  It’s antics, in his human form, kept it there.  It’s the holidays.  If any of the above appeal to you, then this is the story for you.  Other than that, treat it as the otter madness it is.

A MelanieM Review: Fire and Light by Berengaria Brown

Rating: 2.5 stars ouf of 5 stars

Fire and Light coverSeveral years after the divorce, Hugh’s ex-wife decides that she doesn’t want her son and gives Hugh full custody.   Hugh loves his son and finds this a wonderful turn of events, even if it means he has to rearrange his life.  With 6 year old Orion living with him, Hugh and his son are adjusting to life as a family when a chance encounter with a man named Quigley changes all their lives forever.

This is a short story about a romance that starts in an equally small amount of time.  Hugh has just gotten custody of his son from his ex-wife.  She is in a new relationship and her boyfriend does not want Orion around.  Quigley is a man on a 2-week vacation.  All three meet cute in a surf shop and bond over board shorts and goggles.  In that 2 week time frame, the men fall in love and decide to be a family, along with Orion.  Orion adjusts beautifully.  Everyone is happy. The end.

That’s the story.  Short, sweet and has no character building, no foundation on which to build a realistic love story and certainly no depth. What it does have is loads of sex scenes, with a smattering of story.  It’s fluffy with some lovely scenes between Hugh and his son.  That is really the best part of Fire and Light, the father-son relationship.  Of course, that is also the component that makes the acceptance of a stranger and the instant family kind of creepy.

If Berengaria Brown is a must read author for you, then go ahead and pick this up.  But for the rest of us, I would give this a pass.

Review: Son of a Fish (Mended 2014 Daily Dose Anthology) by Kenzie Cade

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5 (rounded up to a 4)

Son of a Fish coverFreelance journalist and romance author Sam Crowe’s life is full but quiet.   With characters dancing around in his head and deadlines to meet, Sam doesn’t have much time for anything else outside of his apartment.  But life has a change in store for Sam when a new renter appears on his doorstep.

High School Football coach and history teacher, Casey Sanders, picks winter as a time for a new job and a move into the third story apartment.  But a slip on the ice brings the type of complications into his life he can appreciate when adorable Sam Crowe comes to his rescue when Casey sprains his ankle moving in.

An offer for help from Sam and temporary quarters in Sam’s apartment brings an instant heat and liking into the equation.  Sam isn’t sure that it isn’t the medications when Casey starts in with the flattering words and flirting but Casey knows that the compassionate and cute Sam is the one he wants.  Now all he has to do is convince Sam.

Son of a Fish is the debut short story from first time author Kenzie Cade.  A part of Dreamspinner Press’ Daily Dose Anthology it charts the beginning of a romance between introspective Sam Crowe and outgoing, athletic Casey Sanders. They meet cute in front of their apartment building with Sam as an established resident on the first floor and Casey a new arrival with an apartment on the third.

An armful of boxes and an icy spot in front of the building result in a sprained ankle for Casey and a rescue by Sam.  And Casey’s inability to make it up to his third floor apartment in his condition gives them both time to get to know each other much better to our delight and theirs. Cade’s dialog is charming and each character’s voice comes through clearly.  The title comes from Casey’s idea of cursing without using offensive words, therefore son of a fish instead of son of a…well you get the idea.  Started as a way to please an ailing mother, it is continued as a balm to his pain over her loss.  It’s the little touches like that will pull you into the story even at such a short length.   You just can’t help but like these two characters the more you get to know them, individually and as a pair.

This is a drama free zone.  It’s a sweet, lighthearted, romance between two characters you will find charming.  The jump into bed was lightning fast but attraction can work that way. At least there was no “instant love” involved.

I would love to see Kenzie Cade use this as a springboard for a longer story about these two to see how their romance evolved from such a meet cute beginning.  Looking for a fun, quick read?  Son of a Fish, the debut story by Kenzie Cade might  just be the thing for you.

Review: Where You Lead by Mary Calmes

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Where You Lead coverChicago-based ATF agent Peter Lomax’s past relationships never seemed to work out.  Ex boyfriends had issues with his possessiveness as well as his job.  Then Peter meets Carver Fleming at a friends party and everything changes.  Artist and gallery owner, Carver doesn’t mind that Peter is possessive.  It is a quality that Carver understands quite well as he feels the same. Nor is he bothered by the fact that law enforcement is far from his artistic world. From the beginning Peter and Carver recognize that they are perfect for each other and soon settle in to a committed relationship.

But six months into the relationship, Carver gets a call from home that changes everything.  Carver’s mother has had a stroke and he is needed home to help his father cope with his mother’s changed condition.  Unbeknownst to Peter, Carver agrees to return home, knowing such a move would not be temporary but permanent.   From Chicago to Colt, Carver’s small hometown in Kentucky is a drastic change and he realizes that not telling Peter about his plans will cause major problems between them.

Carver doesn’t want to lose Peter.  He knows that Peter’s friends and career are based in Chicago and that Peter won’t want to leave a city he loves.  So Carver plans for the two of them to visit his parents at Christmas, hoping the visit and his surprise plans will get Peter to agree to come with Carver when he moves to Colt permanently.  Carver is hoping that the charm of his hometown and his loving family will win Peter over.  Can love triumph over the hurt Peter feels at being left out of Carver’s plans?  And can a man with no family attachments of his own find one to love in Carver’s?  At Christmas, anything is possible as Peter and Carver are about to find out.

A trademark of all of Mary Calmes’ stories is that she always populates them with genuinely likable people. Her characters are guaranteed to endear themselves to the reader almost immediately from the moment they appear on the page, and our affections for them only deepen as the story progresses.    It is one of the elements that make Mary Calmes a  must read author for me and so many others.  Where You Lead is another such short story from this prolific author.

While Calmes does not provide too much back history on Peter and Carver, both men still manage to resonate with the readers.  Peter had not had a satisfactory long term relationship and neither has Carver, although for different reasons. They come complete with relationship issues anyone would recognize.  And when Peter and Carver meet, the connection between them snaps into place with lusty enthusiasm that continues throughout the story.

The story begins in Chicago at an art gallery opening to benefit the fallen agents fund.  Peter is there with his ATF partner Elliot and his wife.  The dialogue between Peter and Elliot feels appropriately affectionate and boyishly juvenile, just what you would expect of old friends.  With just a few sentences, Calmes delivers a working partnership that feels real and honest.  I wish we could have seen a little more of Peter’s life with the ATF and Elliot.   As his profession is such a large part of who Peter is as a person, additional background or scenes of his work would have fleshed this part of the character out for me.

As the location switches to Carver’s home in Colt and the situation with his mother, the plot develops further to include not just romantic love but that of family as well.  This for me is where the story really came to life.  I loved Carver’s parents.  His mother is such a strong character, especially as she deals with not only a stroke but the onset of dementia, possibly from Alzheimer’s.  It’s such a loving and painful portrait of a woman who realizes she is losing herself and the effects on those she loves.  Carver’s father is another fully realized persona and the dynamics of the father-son relationship feel authentic and grounded in reality of two such opposite personalities.

Where You Lead is only 68 pages long, and you will want the story to continue once the end is reached.  I felt as though a evening with friends had ended before I was ready for it to be over.  I would have loved for a little more exposition, maybe a epilogue to furnish a little more resolution to a heartwarming story.  It was never in doubt as to what Peter would do.  So the only real angst here is the family as it faces the reality of his mother’s heartrending future. That they will do it with love and each other’s support is a gift that they will give each other, another certainty that Calmes shares with her readers.

This story was released at Christmas but can be read at any time of the year.  Its message of love and family reaches beyond any holiday celebration.  I love this author and definitely recommend this story for all lovers of contemporary romance.

Cover art by Reese Dante.  This  cover is exquisite.  One of the best of the year.
