Review:  How Not to Kill a Hellhound (Hellhounds of Paradise Falls #5) by Shannon Mae

Rating; 4🌈

How Not to Kill a Hellhound  is the fifth book in the Hellhounds of Paradise Falls series by Shannon Mae, a fated mates paranormal/urban fantasy series set in Paradise Falls, a location where several of her interconnected series take place.

Mae’s actually working towards an overall universe storyline that encompasses all her series and characters I’m guessing, and one of the ultimate main characters has an impactful role here.

I appreciate that it was left to Sebbie , mostly, to decide when he was emotionally ready for the next step in his quest to remember everything that happened and move forward. This is 90 percent Sebbie’s journey. Who he is, the past and how those characters around him support this journey. He’s a sweet, engaging person and I loved reading his story.

It’s a good tale with many creative elements, including mythological aspects, but leaves the Hellhounds mostly removed from this even as Corbin is a major player as Sebbie’s fated mate and Hellhound.  The Crow familiar is on the same level with Corbin here. Except for the many sex scenes with the emphasis on Sebbie’s appendage size being ā€œcuteā€.

I ended up wanting more exposition, less sex, more exploration of their developing relationship and each person’s history as opposed to their body parts.

When things get interesting, things get misty.  I did like the interpretation of Charon and the boat ride. Amazing.

And loose ends were tied up finally from Aiden’s story while setting up Jude and the Sheriff for their fated mates romance. That should be interesting!

Sebbie

Life’s pretty good. I love my job, I feed the crows in my yard, and I have some awesome friends. Sure, I was kidnapped by a cult recently, but my friends rescued me, so no harm done. And, okay, people do tend to die around me, but I work in a hospital. That’s normal… right? Death isn’t scary anyway—it’s just another beginning. Unfortunately, most guys I date don’t see it that way. My love life has been pretty empty, but I just met someone new. He’s ridiculously cute and even likes crows. I just hope he’s not scared off when he learns about my job.

Corbin

I take great satisfaction in removing hellbound souls from the world—especially the ones who prey on the weak. With my pack and my familiar, Crow, at my side, life is steady and peaceful. At least, it was until Sebbie. The cute, bubbly man is far more than he realizes, and he’s about to turn everything upside down. There’s just one little problem: he doesn’t know the supernatural exists… or that he’s a supernatural being. I want to help him harness his powers, but there’s a catch—if I’m not careful, Sebbie might end up killing me in the process.

Tags: Crows hold grudges; Death is actually cheerful; Corbin’s as obsessed with shiny things as his birds; The pack shows up to create chaos; Thea is determined to be Sebbie’s new bestie; Jude doesn’t get arrested (or maybe he does?);

Review: Nerds, Words & Werecats (Witchwolf) by Sam Burns and W. M. Fawkes

Rating: 3.5🌈

This is a side story in the terrific urban fantasy Witchwolf series written by co-authors Burns and Fawkes. That series is currently awaiting its next release of its second book but in the meantime, the authors have published a side story in the same universe that they wrote on the authors’ Patreon page.

I enjoyed reading it. The characters are engaging, especially the cat shifter Landon Smith, who’s a far more fully developed personality than the other main character Dean St. James.

Dean’s a big cat shifter but the story has the potential of becoming a much better version of itself. The entire tale has the feel of an almost completed outline of a novel than a finished story. One half of the couple, Landon,  is more multi dimensional, given a better storyline and execution of his character and situation, while Dean’s character sits needing more heft. In his history, shifter foundation, and, even tragic past romance. We really don’t feel even remotely close to him and those events.  But we do with the fantastic cat shifter, Landon. We love his new crew, his bravery in relocating away from everyone he knew and family, just everything about him. He’s a fully fledged amazing personality. He’s the one we relate to.

It also took me a while to remember how this was connected to Witchwolf. The company and the pack. I wish the authors had brought that element of the series stronger into play here.

As a standalone, there’s absolutely no world building. Within an established universe but with a minimum connection, it’s a good story with some terrific characters with great potential.

Read it for yourself and hope, like I did, that I will see Landon popping up again later on in this series. He’s a joy.

Landon Smith’s life has imploded in a dramatic fashion. Following a devastating betrayal, his brother is marrying his fiancĆ©, and his family wants him to get over it already. The only way he can move forward? Fleeing across the country and cutting contact with them, starting his life over with a new job and new friends. Well, no friends, really.

But a new coworker introduces him to a whole new circle of people, including the alluring Dean St. James. The lyrics Dean writes speak directly to Landon’s heart, but Landon’s not ready to jump into another relationship, and Dean brings his own baggage to the table.

A brutal illness stole Dean’s childhood sweetheart, and with the walls he put up to survive, he’s not sure he’ll ever love again. But a fresh project sparks Landon’s lost passion and opens a door to a future Dean turned his back on.

Their unexpected collab has the highest stakes of all: the last hope of healing two broken hearts.

This novella is set in the same world as Witchwolf, but features different characters and can be read as a standalone. It was originally published on the authors’ Patreon page.

Review;  How to Reap a Soul (And Fail Miserably) Soul Management Bureau Book One  by April Kelley

Rating: 3🌈

How to Reap a Soul (And Fail Miserably) is the first book in the urban fantasy series, Soul Management Bureau by April Kelley.

It’s a fated mate romance between reaper and their soul mates, so it’s instant love/instant sex romance with a plot that’s not always easy to follow because Kelley is trying hard to lay down all her histories and plotting for multiple characters, not just the main couple, and her world building into one story.

And it’s not always effective because someone gets lost in the narrative. Some connection between her characters, some chemistry is left behind in the rush to get it all accomplished.

It’s interesting but I’m not sure I’m really engaged with this world or characters.

Try it out and see for yourself if Grym and Elliot Coyne work together for you.

Love was never on my to-do list, but now that I have it, I’ll let the world burn before I let anything happen to him.

Grym

I’ve reaped souls for three hundred years without a single mistake. Until Elliot Coyne. I’m supposed to ferry him into the afterlife, not bring him back to life and turn him immortal.

Now HR is threatening me, the world is acting like it might explode, and my reaper brothers are stress-snacking like it’s Armageddon.

Even worse? My soul insists Elliot is my beloved. Reapers aren’t supposed to have those. Are they? Regardless, it’s wildly inconvenient.

Elliot
So I die, wake up immortal and able to walk between realms, not that I know what those actually are.

The guy responsible is an annoyingly hot reaper who apparently broke the universe just to keep me breathing.

We’re suddenly stuck together, hunted by his supernatural bosses, and if we fall for each other it might tear reality apart.

Love isn’t supposed to end the world. Yet here we are.

Review: A Dragon Inside: Morntag Dragons & Kingdoms Book 1 by Anabelle Raven

Rating: 3āļø

This book was a recommendation so I picked it up to see what I would find. A Dragon Inside is a sweet, unsurprising fantasy novel that includes dragons, dragon riders, princesses and kingdoms in peril. But adds little to the already overwhelming world of books written about this genre.

It’s the first book in a series but wrapped up the first storyline and romance pretty well by the end of the novel. King realizes he has traitor close to him, his sister, the princess helps save the day,  by rescuing the dragonrider.  Who ends up with the princess.

King also looks to have a HEA too.

There’s a weird magic aspect that unexpectedly occurs towards the end that doesn’t make sense and has no foundation whatsoever laid out for it.

Perhaps it’s coming in the future books.

Some readers might excuse this by saying that the story is meant for YA but all writing, no matter what age the author is aiming for, should have depth in the characters, layers to the world building and intricacies of plot. None of which happens here.

The characters should be entirely believable or engaging enough for the reader to invest their time and emotions.

For me, I thought this was just a simple, sweet, and uncomplicated plot that didn’t ask much of the reader.

If that’s something that you’re looking for, here’s a book and series for you.

This author imo does not compare with KM Shea who was mentioned in the description. Not even close.

Review: Bound By Fate (Blind Fury Book 1) by Annabel Chase

Rating: 4.5āļø

Bound By Fate (Blind Fury Book 1) is a new series by Annabel Chase and the first book is a terrific one.

I absolutely love the premise of a paranormal retirement community, along with the attendant issues of its otherworldly residents in their ā€œlater, much much later years ā€œ of existence. Witches, vampires who have lived extremely long and rich lives and now live out their lives together. Some lively souls, enjoying their ancient lives while others exhibit significant signs of dementia.

It’s a familiar setting and group made fantastical in a complex and intimate story. One that will flow together with a weekly meeting of cardsharp players and fanatical cliques of pickleball teams. All beautifully written and believable.

Chase treats them with kindness, respect and compassion. These people are layered with degrees of history and poignancy of life at its for some.

The assistant head of their security team is an enigma, Maya August, an intriguing figure herself. She’s in hiding on this retirement island off of Savannah,Georgia. She’s been personally isolating herself from everyone.  And that gives Chase ample room for her to develop Maya’s personality and reveal bits about her background as events happen.

And, wonderfully, Chase does this by bringing Maya into the community. She finally fully acknowledges her role as protector and part of them. We are enveloped by their presence as well as Maya’s ability to make her own choices for herself.

But there’s also mystery, murders, and outside forces of power here. One of those includes a person called Zale, someone who will figure into the series.

I love everything about this. The many characters, types of beings, the various mythology the author is introducing (she’s excellent at it), but above all, this realistic yet not retirement community of powerful paranormal beings. All who have issues we can identify with but on extraordinary levels.

I really can’t wait for the next story to arrive.

Btw, HOA’s are still awful no matter what the setting. FYI.

A winner and so happy to share with you.

Most people move to a magical retirement island for peace and quiet—and pickleball.

Maya August moved there to disappear.

As the assistant director of security for Evermore Island—a secret community where elderly paranormals fade into obscurity—Maya has built the perfect hiding place. Her days consist of magical mishaps, avoiding the clothing-optional tennis courts, and definitely not getting attached to the island’s strays (feline or otherwise).

Then her boss vanishes. A resident turns up dead. And Maya’s carefully constructed refuge begins to crumble.

She could handle a murder investigation. She’s handled much, much worse. What she can’t handle is the HOA president forcing her back to the mainland after five years in self-imposed exile to meet Vale, the mysterious and powerful figure who’s claimed jurisdiction over her case.

But Maya isn’t interested in playing by his rules or anyone else’s.

Because if Maya can’t solve this case and keep her past buried, there are fates far worse than letting a killer walk free.

Perfect for fans of morally gray heroines, slow-burn tension, and retirement home chaos meets magical noir, Bound By Fate is the first book in the new Blind Fury-urban fantasy series.

Review:  Trades & Treaties: The Glyphwright Chronicles Book 3 by Jeremy Fabiano

Rating: 4.75āļø

What a fantastic piece of fantasy storytelling! This is one of my favorite series and Fabiano has become a autobuy based on the superiority of his work on this series.

It’s not often I find myself reading novels that I find just so satisfying on multiple levels that I can recommend to many ages of readers, but this author and series is one of them.

I mean how often do you hear someone say that a writer has made math, precision, economics, and the basics of trade absolutely gripping and part of a fascinating magical system and storyline? Fabiano does this time and again here and throughout the series.

He’s building systems and exploring new areas just like his characters, Marcus and Felix, have been building up in skills and abilities for their craft and innovation.

And as with new areas, new challenges and opportunities for growth and innovation.

Drama too. With Prince Adrian and his two bodyguards, a mysterious Kingdom and its ruler of a nearby country in need, and a political crisis that needs the help of our two Glyphwrights, this is a quietly mesmerizing tale.

I did think the ending resolution was either exactly right or too quick. I’m thinking about it still.

I do love how each book ends with every one returning home, watching as their beloved small town comes into view, knowing that each one they love will be waiting for them. And a new future will emerge.

It’s lovely and warmhearted. Exactly what we want for these characters we’ve come to care for.

None of these stories are standalone books but build upon the one before.

I highly recommend reading them all. Excellent work and fantastic storytelling.

A highly recommended read. Just amazing work by the author.

Marcus thought infrastructure work was complicated. Then someone made it political.

The Northern Kingdoms ask for help with their failing ward networks. Prince Adrian volunteers Fairwind & Penwright for the job: redesign everything to work with local materials instead of expensive imports. Except the imports aren’t expensive by accident. Someone’s price-gouging essential supplies, and they don’t want competition.

Marcus’s merchant instincts see the pattern: economic sabotage wrapped in a supply chain monopoly. When Prince Adrian gets kidnapped, the technical work becomes the easy part.

One job. Two skill sets. And finally, a payout big enough to buy their own shop.

A cozy fantasy with LitRPG progression, economic intrigue, unexpected rescues, and the discovery that sometimes your merchant skills matter just as much as your magic.

Review: There Be Dragons Here: A Cozy Fantasy Adventure (Tales of Aedrea) by S.L. Rowland

Rating:5āļø

My reading stars have been aligned lately because There Be Dragons Here by S.L. Rowland is the third stellar book by an undiscovered author in a fantasy genre that I’ve read in a row and I’m just overjoyed to with my reading lucky stars.

This is a side story to the Tales of Aedrea series of four fantasy novels, so I also have an additional world to meander through. I’m so excited.

But let’s start with this book, an amazing emotional journey of friendship, loyalty, and rediscovery of one’s inner fire.

Hilda Rockfall, 182 years old, grandmother, mother, beloved wife. But once, for 70 years she was renowned throughout the world as a Ranger in the Stone & Splendor adventurer group, a tight found family of four beings, who fought and explored together. Until she retired and married, putting that life behind her.

Now a funeral calls her away from home and leaves her the last remaining member of her group.

I love this book and Hilda so much. Her grief in losing her old friend, the journey his last quest takes her on. The stories that she tells, the people who she meets, and the inner person she rediscovers along this tortuous path, so inspiring.

And yes, there be dragons.

So many fantastic stories here. Memorable scenes, heartbreaking moments. And there’s war goats. Amazing!

This is one that’s both shiny and beautiful, a gem to treasure.

 I’m highly recommending it.

Beautiful cover and stunning maps!

At 182 years old, Hilda Rockfall thought her adventuring days were long behind her.

For over seventy years, she roamed the realm as a ranger with the adventuring party Stone & Splendor—taking quests, slaying beasts, and collecting monster teeth like trophies from the boundless sea to the edge of the wilds. But for the past eight decades, she’s traded her sword for slippers, living the quiet life of a proud grandmother nestled in the mountains, telling tales no one quite believes and baking a mean honey crumble.

That peace is shattered when an old friend—and former party member—passes on and leaves Hilda one final quest: scatter his ashes at a secret location marked on a map they looted back in their glory days.

Hilda figures it’ll be a nice little hike. Maybe a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

But then she opens the map.

And scrawled across the bottom in faded ink are four unsettling words:

There be dragons here.

Forrest House - E.M. Hamill

E.M. Hamill has a new MM urban fantasy out: Forrest House.

Blood is Stronger Than Magic

Ander Forrest renounced blood magic to become a nurse-healer in his rural hometown, far from the drama of wizardry and espionage his sister Kate craved. When Kate goes missing in action, Ander finds himself the legal guardian of her gifted twins and receives a cryptic warning from Kate’s husband to protect them before he, too, disappears.

Six months later, his former lover crash lands in the kids’ bedroom via a spell only Ander’s sister could have cast. Druid Cai Piper doesn’t remember how he got there, but he knows he never stopped loving Ander, and that he was sent to protect him and the twins. Cai is strangely drawn to Forrest House and the land it stands upon.

With the secrets of a clandestine wizards’ order hanging between them, Cai and Ander must remember how to trust each other as sinister forces move against the Forrest family—magical terrorists who want to exploit their rare sorcery and bring the world to its knees.

Cai slept the rest of the afternoon. Ander managed to distract the twins from sneaking into their uncle’s room by helping them make chocolate chip cookies. As snow-blue darkness began to gather in the valley, he peered into the guest room again.

His bloodstained long coat was draped over the footboard. Cai sat on the side of the bed, his drooping head leaning in his hands. It was a disconcerting flashback of the night Ander left their flat. That scene was seared into his conscience like a brand.

ā€œHeadache?ā€ Ander asked softly. Cai startled, raised his head quickly, and winced.

ā€œBlinding,ā€ he admitted.

ā€œHere. You need to drink water.ā€ Ander uncapped the bottle and handed it to Cai. ā€œYou took a nasty hit to the head. I healed the cut, but it’s a bad bruise. I have some acetaminophen—paracetamol—if you want it.ā€

ā€œNot yet.ā€ He drank deeply and stood, unfolding his tall frame with caution. ā€œThe vertigo is gone.ā€

ā€œGood.ā€ They stared at each other for a long moment. Ander’s insides still did flip-flops beneath Cai’s golden-brown gaze, bringing warmth to his cheeks.

Cai cleared his throat. ā€œYou said I’m in America?ā€

ā€œYeah.ā€

ā€œAnd if I was sent by a bloodspell, does that mean Remy and Raven are here?ā€

ā€œWell, of course.ā€ Ander blinked as Cai closed his eyes and sighed. He wasn’t sure if it was relief or defeat. ā€œYou didn’t know,ā€ he said.

ā€œNo. Edwyn kept it a secret, even from me.ā€ His fingers touched the blood-matted knot at the back of his head in tentative exploration. ā€œI must have been out. I would never have let him send me otherwise. He was bleeding badly.ā€ His hand tapped an area high and to the outside on his left leg. ā€œShot in the thigh.ā€

Ander thought of all the major blood vessels there and breathed a plea to the Goddess that none were severed. ā€œI didn’t think the Fellowship used bullets.ā€

ā€œWe don’t. We were on a joint mission with intelligence agents. Someone started lobbing spells at us and our allies turned and shot each other. He was hit in the crossfire.ā€

ā€œA Judas spell?ā€ Ander frowned.

ā€œI think so.ā€

ā€œWere you working with British intelligence?ā€

Cai opened his mouth to answer, then flinched and rubbed both sides of his head. ā€œSome of my memories are missing. It’s painful to think about.ā€

ā€œI think you might have a concussion.ā€

ā€œMaybe. But this feels more like it was blocked by a spell.ā€

ā€œBy Edwyn?ā€

ā€œI don’t think he would have had time. Not surrounded by guns and magic.ā€ His breath became uneven again, and he sat unsteadily on the bed. ā€œThe harder I try to think about it, the more it hurts.ā€

ā€œDon’t try right now.ā€ Ander came closer and put his fingers under Cai’s jaw, forcing him to look up so he could peer into his eyes. Still no signs of a more serious head injury, but he wasn’t satisfied until he ran his fingers under Cai’s clotted hair to cradle the bruised lump beneath his palm, his senses open for new bleeding. He didn’t discover any.

Cai stared at him as he pulled away, his face inches from Ander’s. They both became aware at the same time of how close he was standing, his hands gentle on the back of Cai’s head as if he were going to draw him into a kiss. Ander slowly stepped back.

ā€œI have to find a way to get back to…ā€ Cai frowned. ā€œTo…damn it! They took that, too. I don’t know where we were.ā€ He looked to Ander with a desolate gaze. ā€œI don’t even know if Edwyn’s alive.ā€

ā€œYou can’t ask the Fellowship?ā€

He stiffened. ā€œNo, I can’t.ā€

ā€œI’d feel better if I could get you to a hospital.ā€

ā€œI’ll be fine. I think it’s clear I’m meant to protect you and the twins.ā€

ā€œProtect us from what?ā€ He sat on the bed next to him. ā€œWhat’s going on, Cai? Why wouldn’t Ed tell you where the kids were?ā€

He didn’t answer, his gaze slipping sideways.

Ander had not missed this infuriating silence. Kate had pushed Ander away with it, Edwyn maintained it, and Cai had used it to shut down questions when they were together.

He’d left Wales and come home because the people he loved most in the world could barely talk to him unless he was inducted into the Fellowship.

Fury rose in scarlet floods with Cai’s refusal to speak. Ander let it crest. ā€œThat’s fantastic. Of course you can’t say anything. Then tell me how to protect them and get the fuck out.ā€

ā€œYou don’tā€”ā€

ā€œThey’re all I have left of Kate! I need to know how to protect them!ā€

ā€œIf you’re going to shout at me, then I will take that paracetamol now.ā€ His voice was soft, defeated. A crease furrowed the skin between his brows, and the tight lines of his body spoke of more pain than a headache. Ander didn’t have to imagine the grief of not knowing if his brother was dead or alive. He knew only too well.

ā€œI’m sorry.ā€ Ander exhaled, forcing himself to calm. ā€œWe aren’t done,ā€ he said in a less strident tone. ā€œYou will tell me what’s going on. Fuck the Fellowship and your code of secrecy! Those kids are my priority now. They’ve already lost their mother, and now maybe their father. No more.ā€

To his surprise, Cai nodded. ā€œI promise I will tell you what I know.ā€

Disconcerted by his unexpected victory, Ander reluctantly let his anger drain away.

ā€œAre you hungry? I’m making dinner.ā€

ā€œStarving. I can’t recall when I last ate anything.ā€

ā€œIt’ll be ready in half an hour. Make sure you drink the rest of that water.ā€ He turned to go.

ā€œAnder.ā€ Cai’s expression was gentle as Ander looked back over his shoulder. ā€œIt’s good to see you.ā€

ā€œGood to see you, too.ā€ The flutters inside were ridiculous despite the tug of war between Ander’s anger and worry.

Review:  The Inn Side Shop: A Cozy LitRPG Adventure (The Inn Side Shop Series Book 1) by Gil Hess

Rating: 4.75āļø

Well, this book is just so outstanding. I’m still thinking about it.

You never know when you pick up a book from an author you’re not familiar with based on the cover (love it) and story description. But what a fabulously magical and compelling journey Gil Hess sent me and his character, Wren Alder,  into for the first book in this series.

What do I deeply love and admire about this book and Hess’s writing? Its subtlety and simplicity of language, beautifully crafted in a way that’s both remarkable, poetic and yet able to convey the essence of the characters and situations. The awe of a magical moment to the sublimely silly scenes of a found family letting of their emotions. We are there with them, especially Wren, as he struggles with his new life and sense of duty. As a very special young man.

That’s another element here. A feeling of historic accuracy in a magical world. Where teenagers and preteens were already in ā€œadult modeā€ because that’s how that life drew on people. Grow up fast, used up fast, die faster. So having a character like Stella, as bookkeeper, at the old age of 18? Perfect because she’s been learning that trade since she was much younger. It feels believable and Stella feels real, older than her age, worn, and layered in her knowledge and reliability. All the characters have this same energy, this deep sense of realism that makes them so relatable and emotionally able to relate to the world and story.

The plot is compelling in itself, has multiple storylines that makes it interesting, emotionally intriguing and suspenseful. Especially when you consider how the author started his story. With a daunting prologue that puts a shadow over the rest of the story.

Do not let this slow you down! Proceed immediately through!

Categorized, accurately, as a cozy fantasy LitRPG adventure story, the LitRPG aspect of the novel is minimal at best. And that will help for those readers who aren’t familiar with LitRPG stories (Literary Role-Playing Game where a character can level up, see stats, have quests is fused with a fantasy or scify storyline) can happily be engaged in this remarkable narrative and enjoy that aspect without relying too heavily on gamer knowledge.

What makes The Inn Side Shop a great success, and truly riveting fantasy adventure is Wren, his story, his ability to create a found family among his new community’s struggles and and how he’s stays true to himself and the values that he brings with him. This is an absolute gem. Honestly I found myself in tears in places, so raw in the moment and emotional scenes that I was caught up in the moment.

There is mention of a sequel but I can’t find it anywhere.  Perhaps it in progress.  This was a long book although it doesn’t seem like it.

Among my top findings this year. One I think should find a place next to the bed if people ask you to read to them. Choose this!

Highly recommended!

The Inn Side Shop

A Cozy LitRPG Adventure by Gil Hess

Fourteen-year-old Wren Alder never planned to be an adventurer. He just wanted a place to tinker in peace. But when his great-aunt hands him the key to a forgotten supply room at the Crossroads—a sleepy outpost perched between dungeons, cities, and the deep wild—Wren inherits more than a dusty shop.

Because this shop… levels up.

Each sale unlocks new features. Each discovery stirs old magic. A ledger learns to write back. A dungeon wakes beneath the roots. And a boy who thought he wanted quiet finds purpose in the chaos of travelers, quests, and growing friendships.

Heartfelt, clever, and brimming with quiet wonder, The Inn Side Shop blends cozy fantasy with the satisfying progression of a LitRPG—perfect for readers who love slow-burn worldbuilding, endearing characters, and magic that feels just within reach.

The Inn Side Shop Series

Review:Beast Business by Ilona Andrews

Rating: 4.5āļø

Beast Business is a great side story from the remarkable Hidden Legacy urban fantasy universe created by Ilona Andrews (husband and wife author team Ilona and Gordon Andrews).

It features several important characters from those stories who have been around in lesser known but still impactful roles. Here they are elevated to the main character status and given the same attention as their counterparts, from their backgrounds to current situations in their lives.

For me this is an absolute gem because of each character’s power and abilities. We had no idea of the depth and complexity of each type and what it meant for that person as an individual. Growing up and as an adult.

We still don’t. Which makes this even more intriguing.

Augustine Montgomery is an Illusion Prime, head of House Montgomery and the company MII. He’s been a constant presence in the Hidden Legacy universe, sometimes as an antagonist then as a supporter and ally/best friend of the main Houses of the series and. He’s highly feared and complicated.

Diana Harrison is a Beast Prime, a little known power and head of House Harrison, a House aligned with House Rogan and House Baylor.

Diana comes to Augustine with a job, one born of desperation.

The action filled suspense story is incredible. Full of magically powerful scenes of imaginative bottles, emotions and new insights into the characters and their powers and backgrounds.

It also gives us new details on other characters equally important to us and the universe, ones new and already familiar to us.

The only reason I rated I lower was it’s an open ending. This storyline is resolved but the relationship between Diana and Augustine is really just about to begin. And now I need so much more.

But the authors have a new release coming out soon ,This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me (Maggie the Undying Book 1), and released previously ,The Inheritance, the first fantastic book in their new (yes another) series The Breach Wars). I really, really, want a sequel to The Inheritance (Breach Wars Book 1) now.

I don’t know how they do it.

That’s three completely different worlds and three completely different series.

All of which, except for Maggie which obviously I haven’t read yet, I recommend. Because no arcs here I just buy my books.

Here’s another recommendation! And frustration! You can thank me!

A thrilling novella by #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews, set in the spellbinding Hidden Legacy World.

Show as little as possible. Make them think that illusion is all you have. Your life depends on it.

Augustine Montgomery is an Illusion Prime, the highest rank of magic user. The people who have seen his real face can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The people who’ve witnessed the full extent of his power are dead. Illusion isn’t just his brand of magic. It’s become his lifestyle.

One day Diana Harrison walks into the office of Augustine’s premier PI corporation. Diana is also a Prime, a mage who bonds with animals through her magic and prefers their company to humans. Something precious has been stolen from House Harrison. Something Diana must recover at all costs before it perishes.

Augustine is cold, rational, and calculating. He doesn’t get emotionally involved, but something about Diana disturbs the careful balance of Augustine’s inner world. She asks for his help, and he can’t refuse.

Neither Augustine nor Diana are who they appear to be. Both would die to keep their secrets. But the enemy they face is unimaginably powerful, and saving the life at risk will demand the ultimate price, one neither ever expected to pay – complete honesty.
