Forced to leave home as soon as he finished high school, Bailey McCreedy’s focus has been on earning enough money to survive. All he needs is a roof over his head and to keep his small mobile lending library running. Books are Bailey’s escape, and he loves to share the joy of reading with those who don’t have access to them.

Tom Brooks’s upbringing is very different to Bailey’s, with a loving family, a good education, and a high-flying job—that is, until things came crashing down. Tom opens a coffee shop, struggling to build his business and reluctant to accept help, operating under the misguided belief that he must pay penance for his sins. Watching Bailey work with the street kids opens Tom’s eyes to the reality that accepting help is not a sign of weakness, and that he is so much more than his past mistakes.

But as Bailey falls for Tom, with his charming manner, obvious care for others, and group of successful friends, Bailey’s own sense of self-worth threatens to tear them apart. In the face of intensifying challenges, he’s reluctant to confide in Tom, afraid he’s not good enough.

A bright future will require Bailey to heed his own advice—people aren’t defined by their failures or inability to live up to the expectations of others. It’s time for Tom to pay it forward, and Bailey needs to accept the help and love that Tom offers.

How do you find love when someone doesn’t want you to be happy?

Patrick Edwards is dealing with a double whammy. Unwanted attention from his housemate’s boyfriend is making him feel uncomfortable in his own home, and he’s facing uncertainty with his employment as an administrative assistant at the local elementary school. He finally breathes a sigh of relief when a friend puts him in contact with Simon, who has a vacant room.

Simon Dawson is a paramedic who doesn’t hesitate to help Patrick. After all, no one should live in a house where they don’t feel safe. Simon develops feelings for Patrick, but doesn’t act on them—Patrick’s moved from a bad situation and doesn’t need his new housemate hitting on him. However, a weekend away changes everything when Simon realizes Patrick returns his feelings.

But someone doesn’t want Patrick and Simon to be happy. A series of strange letters arrive at the house, and things will get a lot worse before the two men get their happily ever after.

Patrick’s Savior is a novel of approximately 69k words. It is part of a series but can be read stand-alone.

Excerpt

Patrick shivered, suddenly aware of the drop in temperature as the last of the day’s warmth faded. Or maybe it was just that he regretted the direction the conversation had taken. Instead of the pleasant romantic evening he’d planned, he’d made Simon talk about what were obviously painful memories. He wanted to ask more, to find out what Simon had done that caused the rift with his mother, but at the same time, he wanted to end the evening on a happy note. He reached out and grasped the hand Simon held out. Simon tugged, and Patrick flowed with the movement, scooting across the blanket and nestling up against Simon, who wrapped an arm around him and held him close. Simon’s scent filled his senses and his warmth permeated the thin layer of clothes between them.

Patrick tilted his head back to look at him, but Simon was watching the sky. Patrick stared back at those same stars. What did Simon see in the glittering patterns? Did he see the same things Patrick did? What was he thinking as he held Patrick and gazed at the sky? And did he feel the same things Patrick felt—the fluttering in his stomach and hammering of his heart that hinted at the emotions bubbling inside?

“Thanks for arranging tonight,” Simon whispered, his breath warm against Patrick’s cheek. “I’m glad you told me about your family. The picnic was a wonderful idea and it’s nice spending time together, just the two of us.” Simon kissed his temple.

Patrick smiled into the darkness. “I’m thankful you didn’t find the idea of a picnic too sappy.”

“Who said anything about it not being sappy?” Patrick tensed, but only for a moment as Simon chuckled and tightened the hug. “I, for one, happen to be a big fan of sappy. But Patrick?”

“Yeah?”

“How about we take this party inside?”

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Nic Starr here today talking about her latest release Runaway and giving us a tour of some of her favorite places in Sydney. Welcome, Nic.

✒︎

A big thank you to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me today as I celebrate the release of Runaway.

Runaway is part of the Dreamspinner Press World of Love collection. The World of Love stories are “contemporary romances spotlighting the unique features, qualities and attributes of a specific country as well as the universality of love wherever it’s found.”

I’m using this release as a chance to show more of my beautiful city. Runaway, the story of Nate and Damien, takes place in the Australian state of New South Wales, starting in a small country town on the north coast where both men live, followed by time spent in Sydney.

Sydney Harbour

Sydney Harbour is the key focal point of Sydney and a lot of events take place on or around it. You’ve most likely seen or heard of the magnificent New Year’s Eve fireworks display that occurs each year, but there are a lot of other events that showcase the beautiful location.

Here are two of my favourite things to do around the harbour.

♡Open Air Cinema

For about 6 weeks during the summer months, the harbour foreshore becomes a movie theatre! A different movie is shown each night, preceded by dinner and drinks. It’s a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours as it overlooks the Botanic Gardens, the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This is my favourite event of the year: sharing a meal and a bottle of wine while watching the sun set, then seeing the huge movie screen rise. It looks like it’s coming straight out the water. And while the movie is playing, you can see the lights of the city.

Here’s a photo taken while the screen was rising before the movie started. You’ll have to agree it’s pretty spectacular!

♡Wine Island

My new discovery is Wine Island. Sydney Harbour is dotted with some small islands and they are available for events. Wine Island is an event where you spend the day tasting wine from a huge number of winemakers so it combines two of my favourite things – wine and a day spent in the sun. The day started with a glass of bubbles on a ferry as we were taken to the island. The theme from the TV show the Love Boat was playing in the background so it was destined to be a great day.

I hope you liked seeing a little piece of my city and enjoy experiencing a little more when reading Runaway.

Dr Nathan Powell is ready to settle down near his family, and hopefully find the man of his dreams. He returns to the small coastal town where he grew up, but while life is simpler than it was in the city, there are also complications—like patients’ reactions to an openly gay doctor. And like running into Nate’s first love, Damien, an out-and-proud local business owner who is unwilling to be any man’s dirty secret. The reunion reignites old desire even while it stirs up Nate’s guilt over the way things ended with Damien.

When Nate’s nephew runs away, Damien accompanies Nate on his mission to find the young man. The drive to Sydney, and the search of the city, gives Nate time to reconnect with Damien—and to wonder if he made the right decision years ago—when he determined a future for them was impossible. Is a fresh start realistic for two men in their forties? But before he can ponder the second chance they’ve been given, Nate must locate his nephew.

World of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the globe.
