Review: Accidental Bonds (Elemental Bonds Book 1) by Marie Reynard

In the author’s notes, Reynard states that Accidental Bonds is her debut novel. Well, it’s a remarkable story, whether it’s her first book or one of many.

Accidental Bonds, the first in the Elemental Bonds series, follows the meeting of independent mage Elijah Lauring with Alpha Victor Mills of the nearby Mills pack. Victor has come to Elijah to contract for a mage’s help with failing pack wards.

That’s the basis for an exciting, extremely well written, and highly suspenseful paranormal tale. This contains so many great elements. It has a frenemies to bonded mates romance, a dark magical series mystery that’s, frankly, extremely frightening and well scripted, and multidimensional characters that continue to develop throughout the storyline.

Yes, please, I’m well and truly hooked.

There’s not just the standard wolf shifter mating, but another type to consider. The mage aspect is equally interesting and important for the story as is the pack/wolf shifter elements. There’s a lovely balance not just between Elijah and Victor, but also between their foundations, their history, and friends.

Every part of this narrative, Reynard creates a strong sense of definition to her characters and the storytelling, crafting layers that include foundation building for the series and backstories of the characters.

That mage shop, with its dust motes, odd vials, and weirdly intuitive cat becomes a place that’s believable and visually lush. The same goes for the Mills territory, the woods and the surrounding landscape and down to the small pack of endearing individuals we get to meet. Real, grounded in their stories, and the pack they are a part of.

The blackness and mystery that’s a great part of this story and series is truly frightening. Keeping it both real and unknown is a marvelous element.

My biggest frustration? I couldn’t go immediately to the next story! I loved this so much I wanted to see what happened next asap.

Reynard does give this couple a good HFN, meaning they are settled but the series mystery continues. The next book will follow different but connected characters, one from each group of friends. Like I said, I can’t wait.

I’m highly recommending Accidental Bonds (Elemental Bonds Book 1) by Marie Reynard. It’s an amazing book, especially as it’s her debut novel. Grab it up and enjoy!

Review: Lube Job (Big Bull Mechanics #5) by K.M. Nuehold

Ever since Riggs, the small, prickly, large engine mechanic arrived in at Big Bull Mechanics, it’s been fun to imagine how and who Nuehold will pair him up with.

Turns out it’s Shep, the gorgeous extroverted, sexy mechanic, with the sexual appendage that’s either haunted or so addictive that Shep doesn’t do anything but one night stands . Because the people he sleeps with become a little crazed when he doesn’t want them around afterwards. Like stalking him and vandalize his precious automobile.

It’s a magnificent golden retriever slut and tiny assassin chihuahua sort of hookup with many complications and motorcycles and a garage full of found family mechanics.

What adds depth to this is Rigg’s assumption that he’s “broken “ inside because of his failed past relationships. The reason for this assumption is a revelation that comes from an unexpected source. Shep. Their slowly growing friendship changes each man gradually but profoundly.

Nuehold also creates a fabulous crow character that adds a wonderful sense of who Riggs is outside of the shop, a softer layer that isn’t always seen.

A strong thread here turns out that one of the characters is aromantic. This is a rarely seen character trait in romance novels and Nuehold does a great job in introducing the character to a sexual identity he wasn’t aware of, then letting him understand how finally, by applying it to himself, he could see himself and his actions in a different perspective. A life changing one.

The relationship between Shep and Rigg’s feels believable and halting in its growth, including Rigg’s and Shep’s personal issues to deal with.

The secondary threads and all the couples that made appearances were well done and never felt superfluous to the storylines.

There are some single characters who had important roles here but I’m not sure if they are going to get any stories going onward. I hope so.

Lube Job (Big Bull Mechanics #5) by K.M. Nuehold is another excellent book in this series, a definite recommendation.

Now if he’ll just stop looking at me with those dopey puppy dog eyes while I’m elbow deep in a diesel engine, and making my stomach flip with that smile of his, that would be great…

Review: Planes, Trains, and Hurricanes by Eli Easton

Planes, Trains, and Hurricanes by Eli Easton is based loosely on one of this author’s favorite movies with comedic actors Steve Martin and John Candy, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”.

Both have unexpected road trips at its core and new relationships that form as part of the plot.

Easton’s is a sweet instant love story that happens at Christmas during a road trip racing to escape a Hurricane bearing down on Florida and the east coast.

One man’s an engaged uptight medical businessman trying to get to his wedding, and the other’s a social worker trying to see a mother who’s sick to say goodbye. Both in New York City. Or there bouts.

The premise is cute and the characters are straight up Easton adorable. But the quickness of breakdown in Joe Blankenship’s life, from engaged overworked medical executive to “madly in love” running after the social worker who’s convinced him to give up everything.

It feels more like a mid life crisis than a real life romantic moment. It’s a hurricane. They run around a Six Flags type of theme park while fleeing it , smh! Then it’s crisis mode and pressed into relief and more crisis related events.

No relationship really but sex and high emotions that just don’t make me feel like this isn’t anything but intense events and pressure piled into each other. For me, the author didn’t make the connection between the two men viable past the hurricane.

If the author had made the relationship between the two men more realistic , then maybe leave out running around doing crazy stuff while a major hurricane’s impact on their car ride and the world around them. Make that clear and direct, because the events that happen just take the men and their trip out of any kind of realistic scenario until Easton decides to plunge them back in again.

It’s fun, it’s not. It’s a break, it’s a disaster. It’s a roller coaster of a narrative that has not a lot of substance.

Planes, Trains, and Hurricanes by Eli Easton is a cute Christmas story but not my favorite from this author. Read it because you’re a fan or you like holiday stories.

Review: Two Thousand Dreams (Kings of Chaos Book 1) by Jocelynn Drake

Two Thousand Dreams Is the first in Jocelynn Drake’s new Kings of Chaos series. This is the third connected series with overlapping characters within the same universe.

The main character, Moon Mullins, is a blood witch, a rarity among all witches. Moon is a member of a small all male coven that consists of two earth witches and a necromancer. Readers following the author met this coven in the series, Princes of Mayhem, which focuses on the powerful necromancer’s adventures in love and the group’s support. They are best friends after all.

Now it’s Moon’s turn and, much like the other series, a major crossover event is coming. Once every 100 years, a portal opens up between the Fae realm and the earthly kingdom, and the Fae come through. The consequences of Coming Day are never good, especially for earth witches.

But it’s the new characters Drake is introducing that’s going to bring the biggest impact on the universe in expanding it beyond its current form.

It’s a clan of two thousand year old Chinese vampires who’ve come from their native homeland on a rescue mission. Both their backstory and current lives are threaded through with loss and grief. It’s a fantastic new element and I can’t wait for more of their stories to come forward.

The first book combines Moon with the frustrated, tense Chen, whose character is searching wildly for answers in an unfamiliar setting. Moon and Chen are a great example of chemistry in an opposites attract trope. The way in which Moon maneuvers himself through the inner circle of the clan, assessing the situation, and his new emotions about Chen just kept this reader connected at all times.

Also that, as we stayed focused on the core group of Moon and Chen and the clan, all the other important characters, like Moon’s best friends/coven weren’t forgotten. Instead, they were brought into the narrative as needed as well as in dramatic moments that highlighted their role in Moon’s life.

If I had a small quibble, it would have been that Drake allow more of Moon’s extraordinary powers as a blood witch to be evident throughout the story as opposed to sacrificing them to Chen’s role.

The end of the story is as dramatic and heartbreaking as any one could imagine. And it sets up the next book perfectly. No cliffhanger. Just the frustration of having to wait until next March for the release date.

Until then, I’m highly recommending Two Thousand Dreams (Kings of Chaos Book 1) by Jocelynn Drake. It’s a fast paced, incredibly detailed, fabulous read.

Review: A Beginner’s Guide to Revenge, Chaos, and Other Absurd Escapades (Demonic Disasters and Afterlife Adventures Book 3) by Shannon Mae

This is probably my favorite of Shannon Mae’s Demonic Disasters and Afterlife Adventures series. A Beginner’s Guide to Revenge, Chaos, and Other Absurd Escapades picks up after the traumatic events that almost destroyed soulmates demon Az and nephelilim Gabe.

Now older brother Michael is dealing with the emotional fallout from his part in those events. And the author ‘s ability to make the reader feel Michael’s turmoil and anguish is a turning point for this character and hook for the story.

Michael beforehand wasn’t a particularly likable person. But we didn’t know him. Now, through some quiet, poignant scenes , we not only understand what’s been the motivations driving his entire life, but the price this life has cost him in terms of emotional isolation and separation from everyone around him. He’s so lonely. And he’s only now realizing how he got here.

Immediately Mae pulls the reader into sorrowful plight that’s Michael’s story and invests us with the touching journey ahead. That it involves a merrymaking chaos revenge demon, Ari, a paranormal force we met before, makes it fantastically delightful.

Michael and Ari are the quintessential opposites couple that we absolutely adore. Chaos on one side, order on the other. One musses up the need for total control , one helps bring a bit of manageability to utter pandemonium. And we get to be a part of the journey.

It’s a process that happens to also involve a mystery as their relationship develops. It’s a terrific element because it allows Michael to reconnect with his family and become the best person he was meant to be. Along with Ari at his side as his soulmate.

I was just thinking about how much I was connected to these characters, their relationship, and those around them. Mae has done a fantastic job in expanding her universe and overall theme while keeping the reader focused on the particular narrative at hand.

Plus there’s still so many great characters that need their own romantic stories told. Two more are definitely in the works, one coming out in December.

Shannon Mae is an author to put on your list if you’re a fan of paranormal fiction and romantic adventures. Make sure to include this series on the TBR list ! I’m definitely recommending it. Read them in the order that they are written.

Review: Blitzed (Rules of Possession Book 3) by S.E. Harmon

Rating: 4.5🌈

From the sharp dialogue to the layered plotting and fabulous characters, I think this is my favorite of the series. I absolutely fell in love with each man Harmon created here, whether it is the warmhearted NFL tight end Andrew McAdams or the emotionally wounded Jesse Fox, who helps to run Rainbow Harbor for LGBTGIA youth. These men have such dimensions that they vividly come alive on these pages. We see them with their own issues, support systems, and emotional capacity to move forward with their relationship, even when it scares them.

And Harmon, with her excellent work, gives us scenes of intimacy, emotional trauma, family drama, great personal joy and humor as Andrew and Jesse work together to create a relationship as well as a family of two for themselves.

I was so invested in every part of this story. Whether it was the kids, teenagers of Rainbow Harbor , the McAdams family members or those of the Outlaws teams, or even the people like Joshua, who worked at Rainbow Harbor , an exceptional group of people. Honestly, I could see a series about them and the people who are working there and the kids who are part of it. It’s such an amazing, heartfelt element.

It’s also the only aspect of the story where I felt that we didn’t get closure. What happened to Harper? Im so into that teenager’s story. Forget about Trace King, give me Harper.

There’s some small things with editing but the fantastic narrative just connected me so much to these men and their journey that it just felt insignificant.

I could just use a bit more. Of them, of Rainbow Harbor, of those great boys.

Which is why I’m highly recommending this series and story. They do leave a wonderful impression.

Review: Perfectly Perfect Pixie: Peaches’s Story (Perfect Pixie #2) by M. J. May

I fell in love with this universe and characters when I read M. J. May’s Perfectly Imperfect Pixie, which was the first book in this series. It was a richly detailed, vibrant tale, full of beautifully crafted with fantastic characters a reader could easily imagine and commit to. Vampires, pixies, werewolves, elves, sprites, zombies, witches and more in a lively landscape with a unique foundation and framework that was so solid it just felt right.

Now we’re back for Peaches story. We pick up shortly after the events at the end of Perfectly Imperfect Pixie, so yes, read this series in the order that it’s written.

Peaches, a nature pixie, has found his home in an orchard owned by a human couple. This is a complicated process, as pixies are actually a part of the life of the land itself that they call home. It was a big element in the last story and it remains one here. So well portrayed by May emotionally and descriptively. As is Peaches.

Peaches is golden. Golden pixie dust, gold like the sun. He shines so brightly in the narrative both physically and by his personality that he is almost warm when he appears on the page. That’s amazing writing.

So the reader can understand why a vampire would be so drawn to Peaches, a bit of sunlight they haven’t been able to see in hundreds of years or more. No matter what the mythology says.

The vampire being Lucroy Moony, King of the Southeastern nest in the United States, and owner of the bar, Dusk where Peaches’ friend, Phil, used to work. He’s also the being who saved Peaches life at the trial in book one. They have a starting point of a strange relationship. Lucroy is as dark as Peaches is bright. And just as well defined by his vampire powers , intellect, and age as Peaches is by his charm , bravery, and loving nature. In other words, they oddly match.

May builds a fantastic story here full of mystery, with our characters from the first story (and fast friends with Peaches), elements that have carried over that look to be a arc storyline, and new characters that will be revealed later on to have their own romances and roles within this arc expansion .

I was so enthralled that it was a 3am ending for me. Couldn’t put it down. May gave us sprites, a new ancient vampire I need to see more of, and a new take on social pixies that will make me stay up late again, I’m sure, in the upcoming book three.

And villains. Crazy, awful, and sometimes pathetic villains. I really love these books.

I’m highly recommending them but read them in them in the order that they are written.

Assassin by Accident is E.J. Russell’s offering to the Carnival of Mysteries series and it’s just a marvelous heartwarming fantasy read. Russell has combined her Mythmatched universe with the themes of the Carnival of Mysteries, giving each its due and letting the reader feel they’ve been immersed in a balanced narrative.

Welsh water horse Nevan Quirke’s young sister has been kidnapped by a nasty earth mage for nefarious purposes. And in order to get her back, Nevan made a hasty bargain to do whatever the mage wants, once. Unfortunately, he didn’t read the small print.

I love this story so much. It has so much depth and heart to it. There’s Nevan, a being who feels unloved by all, a true monster, except by his adopted sister. He’s raised her and kept her safe and loved until she wished to visit the Outside World, and everything went wrong.

And when under the horrible geas of the earth mage to accomplish a terrible task , it’s goes wrongly right in the best of ways. In this story, a case of mistaken identity and the introduction of a truly beloved character. Seb Ardelean, a nanny who’s mistaken for an assassin is a marvelous character. Seb’s one of Russell’s grand creations , a character who can marshal a horde of mischievous children with grubby hands to dealing with villains bent on destroying innocents. And do it with a sense of humor, compassion, and resolve that’s sexy and admirable. Yes, totally adore Seb.

There’s magical shenanigans, familiar faces, among them favorites Jordan and Doop the Hellhound, a race to find the sister, two beings facing danger and falling in love while coming to terms with past issues and traumas. It’s so lovely and heartwarming. I dove in and didn’t surface until I’d finished the book.

I like the different ways Russell plays with mythology and the types of beings found within the various cultures, here it’s the Welsh ceffyl dŵr. The central theme is well used, but unfortunately that means clowns. *Shudders*

Assassin by Accident (Carnival of Mysteries) by E.J. Russell is a favorite in this multi-author series. One I’m definitely recommending. And if you haven’t already found this author’s MythMatched series that’s an element here, look those up as well for some great reads.

The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book features grumpy/sunshiny, hurt/comfort, mistaken identity, opposites attract, unexpected derring-do, and of course an HEA—no matter how little the men in question think they deserve it.

Review: Cast In Shadows (Shadow’s Lure Book One) by Alice Winters

It took me a while to get into the storyline and connect with the characters. Alice Winters is a favorite author of mine and one of her trademarks in writing is the types of high energy characters and their roles within her narrative structure. There’s always one that has a certain amount of overpowering verbal quality and quirky character. He is often the most dangerous player, impetuous, charming, chaotic, unpredictable and often quixotic.

Here he’s mysterious , murderous,and borderline abusive towards Bastian , the Caster he kidnaps. And we don’t know why. That’s potentially a big problem. Because he’s not charming enough yet to overcome that . Not at the beginning.

I’m talking about Andras, a dark magic user who can take over dead people’s bodies. A interesting element in itself because Winters is asking the reader to connect and develop feelings for an entity whose body can be deposed of. I really like this factor. And as the plot plays out, the character too.

But the chitter chatter snappy dialogue and constant murderous tone/thoughts that Winters uses in her other books and characters ,in fact , made Andras less attractive in the first part of Cast In Shadows, the storylines more dense, because the verbiage was distracting.

Especially when on the other side was a young man who was already being abused by his cult like family and domineering father. That’s Bastian, who is at the bottom rung for everyone, on both sides. Except the reader, who feels sorry for him. Bastian is an appealing figure and one who’s easily the most engaging for the reader.

Because he’s being beaten down by everyone and everything here. We emphasize with him. Constantly.

On the other hand, it’s a challenge to understand the chemistry between the Andras who’s kidnapped him and Bastian, who hates his life. Unless it’s a case of Stockholm syndrome.

Eventually, a wider plot and a mysterious revenge motivation is revealed, but not necessarily completely. This is a “tip of the iceberg “ sort of world building scenario where only bits and pieces get scattered around for the reader to gather up and process.

I’ll admit there’s some interesting and fascinating stuff here. And the hints being thrown around look towards some whoppers of future revelations. That second book should be great. But you have to read through the sometimes murky mess that’s the Cast In Shadows, especially at the beginning.

So I’m recommending this for fans of the author, the genre, and for the really interesting elements Winters has in store for the characters and series.

Review: Warrior King (Warriors Book 1) by Eden Winter

Well, that was one fabulous fantasy epic romance! There’s forced marriages, death and deep intrigue, bloody battles, kingdoms at risk, and finally, finding true love.

I had such a fantastic time reading this and getting into the lives of these characters! And happily, this is only the first book in the Warriors series.

But starting us off is the taking of the Kingdom of Revellan by the Emperor’s son, Commander Draylon Aravaid. He’s leading the battle and the troops to defeat the traitor King and insure that the Emperor’s orders are carried out.

However, once the blood is spilled, the battle ends, left standing is two young siblings guarded by the enemy’s spare heir, Prince Yarif DiRici .

With those elements solidly in place,Winter creates a fantasy world of bitter kingdom politics that incorporates spies, assassins, intrigue on a vast scale, betrayal, forced marriages, and a cast of beautifully drawn characters, from the main couple to the several villains of the story.

Both men are easily seen by the reader, well defined by their personalities and rich descriptions. There’s Draylon Aravaid, Commander of the Emperor’s Army. Second son, scarred, a seasoned warrior with a thoughtfulness and determination that underpins his ability to strategize and fight. He’s such a splendid man and character. I adore him.

He plays up perfectly against his counterpart, the third son and heir spare of the traitorous and now dead King. That’s Prince Yarif DiRici, a multidimensional figure, protector, secretary, linguist, consort to be. And here he’s the one person protecting his younger brother and sister from the Emperor and his plans.

The Emperor is an evolving figure here , one I wish we could have had more insight into. He is more of a one dimensional character than he could have been, and the hints at the end would have made the Emperor a far more complex figure.

But the rest? Fabulous! Especially Rufe, Draylon’s best friend who’s suffered much in his past. The red-headed king who’s playing a big role here, no spoilers. And May from the kitchen.

Can’t wait to read more about the next in this universe from Eden Winters.
