Review: Static/Cling (Subpar Heroes story) by Jaime Samms

Static/Cling by Jaime Samms is another in the Subpar Heroes multi-author series about a group of people who have specific abilities that have been deemed just not “super” enough for high level status. They’re subpar heroes or heroes whose abilities are diminished in some respects.

Samms story involves a group of characters, first a pair of friends/lovers that eventually ends up as a triad when they find the third that completes them. Along the way, a team of like minded and powered characters is formed, there’s a scary mission to undertake, and an evil villain to be foiled.

Static/Cling has terrific characters, interesting storylines, and the potential for additional novels, packed as it is with loose ends and underdeveloped plot lines and character elements.

I really enjoyed it.

Characters like Bjorn Bielke, “electricity runs through my body” and Leif, his best friend/lover and personal current discharge unit, who end up working for SPAM (the superhero agency) where all the rest of their future team is working, are great in their respective roles. Also fascinating, if not equally well developed, is Kassian, IT SPAM specialist, but he’s more. What exactly is not delved into.

The developing Bjorn/Leif/Kassian romance is interesting in how the author pulls it off and it makes sense for all the people involved. This could have taken up more of the plot, especially since Leif and Kassian each need more narrative development than is given towards the end.

Sal, Robert (two more intriguing members of this found family) as well as actual family members, contribute to a action packed, emotionally driven story.

Only the fact that Samms had left unexplored or unresolved some major plot lines at the end of the story did I feel unsatisfied with the finish and HFN given to the characters.

Perhaps, like other writers, Samms intends to revisit this universe. At any rate, if you are enjoying the series and are a fan of the author, I recommend reading Static/Cling (Subpar Heroes story) by Jaime Samms. It’s very entertaining.

Review: In The Nick of Time (Subpar Heroes novel) by Elle Keaton

In The Nick of Time by Elle Keaton is a great example of how a reader can absolutely enjoy and be engaged by a story while recognizing that it’s not exactly fulfilling expectations. Especially when it’s a part of a series with certain parameters.

Did I spend a lot of time laughing and appreciating the evolving dynamics between Agent Douglas Swanson ,aka Long Shot, and his newly acquired baby agent Nicholas Sedgwick? So much. The wonderful dialogue, the believable relationship that develops as they investigate the missing agents, and even the addition of Tim the sulcata tortoise, that works together to create a fast-paced, funny narrative.

It’s sexy, funny, full of surprises, small neat characters, Las Vegas, and enjoyable storytelling.

But in a series that’s about people who have super powers or powers of a less impressive nature, that’s not an element that is as well explored by the author here as I had hoped.

We understand immediately that Doug’s semi-retired and doesn’t use his superpower any longer due to a tragic event. But Nick’s perhaps more interesting abilities aren’t well explained. And during Keaton’s storytelling, any “uses” by Nick are often in “off the page” scenarios so the reader isn’t emotionally or visually involved.

The full promise the character has been showing is never reached as far as his detailed abilities. And a potential new one is never brought up again. The author leaves some elements underdeveloped. Just as Tim is left as Tim. He just is.

Even SPAM , the superpower /subpower organization, is not as well laid out as it should be.

In The Nick of Time (Subpar Heroes novel) by Elle Keaton is a story that I very much enjoyed. The characters are engaging and their relationship journey made my day. It certainly made me smile a lot. Check it out!

Review: A Tale of Whispers and Rogues: An MM Fantasy Romance (Shadowborn Book 1) by Jordan Lee

Once again, a glorious cover pulled me to a book and got me to the description and the decision to read the story. See the artist credits below. A Tale of Whispers and Rogues by Jordan Lee is the first in the Shadowborn fantasy series and I was really entertained by the world building and characters.

This is a very much a fast paced action adventure with a slow burn romance thread that builds as a small group of people journey or flee across the country. Why they are running, the political and religious state of the world and countries are revealed as the group flees.

That’s Uncle Amias who works for The Legion. The Legion is the world’s governing body. Next is Colt O’Malley, a former thief, fighter and gambler who’s indebted to Amias, and most importantly, there’s Amias’ nephew, Owen Greene. Owen, who has led a life of temporary homes and caregivers, is finally orphaned fully into his Uncle’s care, only to be left behind again. The truth behind his story becomes clear at the beginning of the journey when Amias and Colt come to collect him. Events force the disclosure that Owen is a Shadowborn.

Lee does a powerful job in showing the tragic events that lead up to Amias abandoning his job and running to gather up Owen. Also the pain of Owen leaving behind the only real home he’s ever had. All to flee for his life.

It’s about religion, magic, interpretation of that religious word and the actual horrors being enacted by fanatical factions in power to keep their beliefs intact. Including acts that have ended up destroying lives, many of which are children.

The storylines and characters are great. I was absolutely invested in this journey because of them and the growth that I saw. And the mysteries being laid out still in the landscape and the mythology.

However, Lee also decided to throw in multiple POVs, beyond that of the expected two main characters of Colt and Owen, and honestly, it weakens the narrative and the suspense that builds upon that singular experience between the one group because if you are experiencing it from just their perspective, then anything else is going to be a surprise to you as well.

I’m not a fan of this format, it rarely makes sense, and for me, it doesn’t here.

It also changes the way the book ends. Not from a HFN but to a cliffhanger.

A Tale of Whispers and Rogues: An MM Fantasy Romance (Shadowborn Book 1) by Jordan Lee is a very good, well crafted, and involved read. I think its sequel is going to be even better. I can’t wait to see where the author takes the story next. A definite recommendation.

Review: The Fae Menagerie (Fortune Favors the Fae #5) by Edie Montreaux

Rating: 3.5🌈

The Fae Managerie by Edie Montreaux is the fifth book in this fabulous multi author fantasy series and I found it very entertaining.

While the traveling magical coin is not as much of a character element as it is in the other books, it serves as the item that will bind together two the highly different main characters here.

The concept is interesting if not fully developed or explored or perhaps explained in the story. A fae, Doyle, has been imprisoned by his mother the Queen because of his flippant attitude towards love and romance. Staying in a magical glass prison with viewing hours (actually it’s far worse) until he, Doyle, finds true love. Yes, there’s holes in that. And there’s also a bigger storyline behind that attitude and family dynamics that pops up unexpectedly towards the end of the book. I wish Montreaux had brought this thread into this couple’s storyline earlier along with the other fae drama because it would have made more sense of the dynamic between mother and son.

This sort of choice the author makes for their characters is the same one they make for the other main character of businessman Parker, the one that ends up being imprisoned with the fae Doyle through the nefarious ploy of a ex boyfriend. His background isn’t fully developed, just hinted at in the oddest manner. A shame because the reader isn’t sure if his father is a mobster or monster in a business suit.

Human Parker and fae Doyle go through a ton of trouble, in that prison, where they are often on display for others to view. It’s interesting in the manner that this author makes use of a glass prison plot that’s imaginative but frustrating at the same time. Specifically when it comes to the Warden, an incubus and the fellow prisoners. We just don’t know enough about the situation and prison conditions to make sense of the moment to moment changes or narrative choices.

The relationship between Doyle and Parker feels very real and relatable but everything else keeps impacting on how much we connect with the situation.

A another issue for me is the lack of accountability for the crimes committed against the pair and the lack of any true justice or regret for any of the actions carried out here against a group of characters. I think the author understands that the readers will be uncomfortable with this aspect of the story and tries to insert an explanation into the end of the story. But all it does is serve to highlight further exactly how unsatisfactory this approach is going to remain. This world stays status quo. A penal system that’s not truly explained or understood within the book is allowed to continue with its original warden who committed crimes.

So there’s a really strong romantic element here, with two terrific characters, Parker and Doyle each having their own version of a personal story that ends in a loving relationship. The Fae Menagerie has some interesting ideas and great side characters too, but also quite a few that need further thought, more development, and greater attention to detail.

Did I enjoy this? Yes but also left a bit unsatisfied. Still a recommendation.

Review: In The Dragon’s Lair (Wings Over Albion Book 3) by Joy Lynn Fielding

It’s been six months since I read the first book in Fielding’s Wings Over Albion series. That’s Rufus Mortimer’s novel, a shy red dragon who’s a librarian and his human mate, Mark. Loved it.

That story really contained so much of the foundation knowledge and insight into the dragon culture that Fielding is still creating for her series, that it’s a must read for this book.

That’s because the story opens as two dragon shifters view a “must attend” high society party already in progress. It’s from the perspective of a member of a dragon family seen very differently in status in current dragon society. One Nate Mortimer is from the main banking family, top four in society, power and influence.

The other? From Cornwall, a family that prefers to live quietly, no matter what the legends may say. That’s Alex Teague, a country dragon, someone who wants to know why he’s been brought into the house of the powerful Fortescues, along with members of his family.

Nate too is there, directed by his own intensely powerful grandfather Bim, to investigate the theft of monies from their bank and see who is behind it.

Fielding has several mysteries to build, two relationships to handle as well. One is that of Nate and his ex Charlie Fortescue, not a nice person. The other one is the tentative one he’s building with Alex as they combined their interests, growing attracted to each other and move about Bath ‘s historic sites.

Everything is made more volatile as everyone is staying at the Fortescue mansion under the observant eyes of the head of the family, James Fortescue.

The story got a little bogged down at times with other people’s stories, like Ella’s or just some random scenes from the household. There’s some fun and interesting elements about Jane Austin, and just Roman history throughout the story as Nate’s cover for being there is that he’s writing a book about Jane Austin.

However, I wish they’d networked with Rufus and Mark here, considering the Cornwall aspect. Also more about the dynamics between families should have been explored as it was in the first story. Bim has always been an extraordinary character.

I do enjoy this universe and look forward to seeing more of it in future books. There’s so much more to explore here.

Review: The Soul of an Angel (Supernatural Affairs Book 5) by F. N. Manning

F. N. Manning’s urban fantasy series. Supernatural Affairs, draws to a close with The Soul of an Angel.

Manning’s story is a good finale in that the reader has some important questions answered about the main characters and their relationships. The author also supplies further exploration of the universe and adds on to the series world building/mythology already established.

Does everyone get a HEA? No. A HFN , which is more in keeping with the storylines and newness of the main couple’s relationship. That actually makes sense, but for a finale novel some people might not be satisfied.

Manning has a number of larger series elements that need in-depth exploration and themes that require more heavy lifting, narratively speaking, than a book 195 pages long can provide.

Frost, a Angel hiding from Heaven, revelations about the true nature of the inhabitants of Heaven and Hell, their relationship with Earth, the past and current history between the three realms, a hidden political conspiracy, complete with battle and that’s just what is basically happening.

Let’s then throw in internecine family dynamics, and a main character in danger who’s the fated mate of Frost. Nathan Clinton is someone who is being hunted down and that’s what brings him to the attention of Frost because of what is hunting him.

I liked Manning’s characterizations of both Frost, who we’ve seen before, and Nathan, a very frightened man on the run from demons and a supernatural world just revealing itself to him.

I think that my issues here are that there’s little time for any real development in this relationship because there’s so much more that Manning needs to pay narrative attention to and does. To the detriment of this couple.

A fight for Earth. Yes, super important and that would necessitate a lot of new information and elements to be added. Which they are. Aliens who aren’t what they appear? Yes, more exploration and more details required. So much more.

Probably see where this is going.

There’s really not enough time within the pages to lay out all the really interesting and imaginative content that Manning has written for this story and series. So in trying to get it all done, it all feels as though the author has made sacrifices and nothing has the layers and dimensions expected in a finale or book with this many storylines.

It’s got a lot of potential. I enjoyed the characters, and some of the relationship dynamics. I just wish there had been more length or another book to make that work.

The author does mention the idea of another sequel series which perhaps would tie up some of the many loose ends left behind here. And let us see what happens next to those characters without partners or just getting a start with theirs. That would be lovely.

Review: Transparent Is a Color (A Subparheroes Novel) by Kaje Harper

“Peregrine Crawford stared in horror at the box sitting on top of his delivery cart. That’s a bomb.”

I’m a fan of Kage Harper’s work. This author manages to take a “ordinary” person’s, or someone who has been categorized as “sub par”, approach to an extraordinary set of circumstances and make it and him relatable.

That’s Perry whose super powers are anything but. Perry can make things change colors but not indefinitely. Yellow rug to blue. Until the color fades. He has one more talent but it doesn’t always work and takes a lot of power and practice. So Perry hasn’t told anyone about it. That makes him a disappointment to his mother, especially as his only job he can hold is in a mailroom.

Perry is that easy to connect with character. One whose life changes when he does the right thing and meets Sergeant Deckard of the Nova City Bomb Squad and his canine patrol partner, Nix.

Harper combines an investigation into a serial bomber with a sweet developing relationship between Perry and Deckard. The super hero organization, SPAM, isn’t much of a element here but does appear largely as a smaller thread.

This is a good take on the theme and a sweet couple.

Review: Hunted (Into the Wyldewood Book 2) by Rowan McAllister

It’s been a while since I read the first book in the series, Hexes and Horns, so getting back into this universe needed prompting from the author for necessary foundation work.

There’s some really good elements here and some I feel need better explanation or more detail to feel complete.

The characters are terrific. The mixed pack of shifters trying to pull it together on the edge of an uneasy otherworldly boundary situation is a great element. It adds so much natural tension and believable shifting pack dynamics that I wish we’d had more of this aspect of the story. From Grammy, CJ, and various other pack members, the rawness and energy of this stressful scene came through perfectly.

Especially with its Alpha, Angel Velasquez, who has his own struggles to overcome, along with the otherworldly dealings and beings to deal with to ensure that the pack is safe. That includes murky agreements with one of the Fae over someone Angel has agreed to give sanctuary to.

That’s the mysterious Dafydd. His story and background very slowly reveals itself, almost too slowly. We figure out pretty quickly what type of being he is but not why he’s in danger.

That background is extremely difficult to understand and too complicated for the events that follow. It’s not well laid out narratively nor are all the vague clues as to his species history or strangely mysterious individuals that are important to this aspect of the story but without any firm foundation.

It’s frustrating that we get great characters but holes in the storylines and universe building when needed.

Like an unacknowledged mate bond. Why not just go ahead and cement that aspect of their relationship? It made no sense to leave it as one more cloudy element .

I enjoy this author and find she very imaginative and entertaining. This book has many good elements, enough to make it an enjoyable read.

Review: The Queen of Darkness: An Epic Dragon Fantasy Saga (The Crystalline Dragons Saga Book 4) by Eoghan R. Cunningham

The Queen of Darkness is the penultimate story in Eoghan R. Cunningham’s epic YA epic fantasy adventure series about a young escaped slave, his two friends/companions on their journey through various kingdoms. It’s got evil villains, dragons, monsters, mythical beasts and legends for the heroes to follow.

The Queen of Darkness picks up right after the cliffhanger of Rise of the False King. It helps immensely that both books were already released so the reader could continue onto the next to pickup on the action.

Dusk is sometimes a very frustrating character here. Hes coming across as very inconsistent as far as the growth the author has given him from book to book, major trauma to trauma. Here he’s showing restraint and maturity in dealing with multiple situations and issues. Lex’s revelations and the impact it’s had on him, the separations, the immediate danger to himself and his friends, and any thoughts of power for himself. This is a person capable of intuitive thinking and trusting his instincts.

However, this more thoughtful “Dusk” is abandoned in favor of the first more untried “Dusk” that we encountered in the beginning of this journey. That Dusk has listened to the lessons he’s been taught, the wisdom that he has learned, doesn’t communicate to his friends , doesn’t think rationally, put together clues, and isn’t sure of what he wants. Even after telling someone he’s thought about the quest and knows he’s going through with it and his role.

This inconsistency is frustrating especially as there are so many wonderful people and moments here. The author has a terrific story and ability to build excitement for this adventure and a real emotional connection to these characters.

There’s one more book to go. That novel has a lot to accomplish because there’s still so much to learn about the characters as well as multiple storylines to explore and pull together.

One thing I keep forgetting to mention is the great maps of the world the author has created and includes for the reader to follow along with the characters as they travel. Fabulous.

While this series has some issues, it’s an entertaining, lively, and imaginative saga. It’s a YA fantasy adventure I’m happy to recommend. One more book to go.

Review: Rise of the False King: An Epic Dragon Fantasy Saga (The Crystalline Dragons Saga Book 3) by Eoghan R. Cunningham

The Rise of the False King is the third book in Eoghan R. Cunningham’s YA epic fantasy adventure and it’s one I highly enjoyed. I was happy to have the fourth novel released so I could go quickly onto the next section, as this flows smoothly through one novel into the next.

It’s also definitely geared towards a younger reader. While there’s a romance brewing and romantic elements among other characters, there is still no rawly sexual scenes but kissing and anything else is “off page” or left to the imagination. And that main romance is most definitely a slow burn type of relationship, frankly due to the naïveté of the one character and the hidden secrets of the other.

The characters are very relatable and well defined, if not a certain type of epic character. Dusk, the escaped slave, has undergone the biggest challenges and changes in his life. Magic has come to him in the form of a crystal and a White Dragon. Now he’s hunted by several villainous factions, one lead by an evil man so deadly it might threaten the entire world. Also with him is Tara, a warrior formerly of the King’s Guards, and Lex, a young man of hidden background but clearly wealthy and not used to being on his own.

The author has a real knack for writing exciting action sequences, which is great because Dusk and his friends, but mostly Dusk, fall into trouble frequently.

The many storylines weave together a growing mythology of dragons, humanity, and magic undone that’s tragic for many and is still being played out. I’m throughly invested in this rich tale and the how the author is going to bring the stories that have been “told” in the narrative alive through the adventures of his characters.

One aspect that pops out, at least for me, is that certain actions or events are “telegraphed” in the story much like you’d see it in a movie like Scary Story. Where you yell at the screen, the villain is in the closet because, obviously that’s what’s going to happen. Here, if the dragon says don’t go in the bog. Or wherever. You just know the gang is heading to the bog.

Did narrative stuff like this ruin my enjoyment? No. I just wish I had “narrative” popcorn to throw and I merrily read right along.

Each book ends on a cliffhanger so having all but the last book released is great. One more to go.
