BLURB

Dexandfinnbeachad

Two stubborn men.

One is a rude jerk. The other, the life of the party.

It was hate at first sight.

Pro beach volleyball players Finn Callahan and Dexter Savage have been rivals since college. While Finn always comes out on top on the court, Dexter’s carefree and fun-loving personality earns him scores of adoring men and women. And as much as Finn fights to deny it, there’s another reason for the tension he feels when Dex is around. Hate wasn’t the only thing he felt when he first laid eyes on his opponent.

When they’re forced to team up, the two men must bury their differences—on and off the court—if either of them is going to succeed professionally.

EXCERPT

Finn

“Get it. Get it. Hurry, hurry!”

I scramble for the ball while Coach yells out encouragements—or possibly reprimands. I can never be sure which. Either way I’m on top of my game today. I hustle to the net, get under the ball, and bump it with my wrists, arcing it high for Dex.

Dex waits for it to come down and lifts it using his fingertips. As the ball goes in the air, I take a running jump, curve my body so it doesn’t touch any part of the net, and smack the ball over our opponent’s head. It hits the sand.

“Yes,” Dex shouts and holds up a hand for me to high-five. Grinning, I reach out and slap my hand into his. Dex holds on to it for a brief moment. The contact is quick—less than a second—but the heat that sears through my palm leaves a lasting impression. It’s time to switch sides and it’s my turn to serve. Dex puts his hands behind his back and gives me the signal to hit it left with no spin. I toss the ball up and hit it over the net.

Beautiful. Our opponent drops to his knees and makes the save, but he can’t get to his position quickly enough to reach the ball his partner perfectly sets for him. Dex cheers and pumps his fist in the air. I grin at his enthusiasm. Watching Dexter Savage have the time of his life is mesmerizing. It infuses me with an energy I’ve never felt before. I no longer see Dex as just another charming guy. He has me spellbound and hanging on his every word.

“Nice whiff, dickhead,” I call out when he misses a dig and comes up with a mouthful of sand.

I can’t have him thinking I like him or something.

Dex laughs and spits out the sand. “Shut up, Callahan.”

By the end of the day, we should be exhausted, but we’re riding high on winning the New Orleans Open, and on the thirty-minute ride back to the hotel on the river, we both get our second wind. Dex is literally bouncing around. He’s so full of energy, he’s making me dizzy.

“Come on, Finn. Let’s go out to celebrate. This is New Orleans, The Big Easy. There’s sin on every corner and a ton of awesome clubs here.”

I roll my eyes. “I doubt your idea of an awesome club is the same as mine, Savage.”

“What?” Dex squints at me. Then his eyes widen almost comically. “Oooooohhh. You don’t think I can handle a gay club?” A slow, snarky grin spreads across his handsome face, and my breath hitches.

Hello dimple.

I shake off my dirty thoughts to get back to the subject at hand. “No. I don’t. God. I can’t even think about you going into a gay club without laughing.”

Or getting hard and groaning.

“Hmph.” Dex levels his intense hazel eyes at me and quirks one eyebrow in challenge.

“No, Dex.”

“Yes, Finn,” he sings gleefully.

“No way.”

Dex chuckles and nods his head. “Oh yes. Pull out your sparkly top, baby, because we’re hitting the gay clubs tonight.”

“Fuck you, Savage. I don’t own a sparkly top.”

“Rainbow?”

“No.”

Dex gives me a disgusted look. “What kind of gay man are you?”

“Not a very good one, I guess.”

One who crushes on his straight teammate, that’s what kind of gay man I am. A stupid one.

After five minutes of back and forth, I finally get Dex to let go of the idea of cruising gay clubs tonight, but only on the promise that I’ll take him to one when we get back to LA. I’m hoping he’ll forget by then, because seeing his gorgeous ass shaking on a dance floor while hot, sweaty guys grind on him? I’d implode before the night was over.

We change and grab a cab, and Dex directs the driver to head toward Bourbon Street. “Really, Dex? Bourbon Street? Can’t we go somewhere a little less—”

“Less fun? No, Callahan, we can’t. You’re having fun if it kills me. Tonight I’m officially removing the stick from your ass….” Dex twists his head and shoots me a scorching look that has my dick throbbing painfully in my shorts. “Even if I have to pin you down to yank it out.”

Holy fuck.

I swallow, and my mouth suddenly disconnects from my brain as every drop of blood in my body turns to lava and collects in my groin.

“Whatever, Savage,” I mumble, turn to the window, and shift my hips so Dex can’t see my now fully hard cock.

Dex laughs and shoves my shoulder. Does he not know what he’s doing to me? I sneak a glance at my teammate. He’s looking out his own window, eyes glittering, smile as wide as a kid on Christmas morning.

No. He has no clue. He’s truly excited to go out and have fun. In fact he’s practically bursting out of his skin, he’s so wound up. But then, Dexter Savage always was the life of the party. He’s comfortable in his own skin. It’s what makes him so attractive. Well, besides the tousled, just out of bed hair, the perfectly straight nose and full mouth, and the body to die for. But his outgoing personality was what had me crushing on him in college—and the reason I hated his guts. I watched him every day at practice as he charmed everyone around us, and knew he would never be available to me.

“Here it is.” Dex throws some money at the cab driver and leaps out of the car. I take a look at my surroundings and thump my head on the glass. We’re on a street thick with pedestrians clutching hurricane glasses and sipping through long straws as they mingle in the crowd. Neon signs line the business fronts on both sides of the cab, each promising a different kind of debauchery inside.

Dex leans down and sticks his head in the backseat. “What are you waiting for, Callahan? Let’s get this party started.”

Ugh. Tonight is going to be pure torture.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Dogwood Days & Spring Fever by Poppy Dennison ~ Audiobook narrated by Matt Armstrong

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5

dogwood-days-spring-fever audioThis audiobook is a compilation of the two books of the Holly Creek series in one: Dogwood Days and Spring Fever. It is not labeled as an ongoing series, but it did end with a cliffhanger—a very unsettling cliffhanger—and I can’t describe how irritated that made me. There was no indication of that in the blurb, and I really dislike that more than I can even say in print.

Dogwood Days opens with Jefferson Lee Davis on the phone with his uncle in Holly Creek when he suddenly hears a crash and then nothing further. Jefferson Lee had badly wanted to make it on his own in the world of journalism in a prestigious job in a big city, but family comes first, so he rushes home to Holly Creek after notifying the town’s sheriff to check on what happened. Once he gets there, he finds out his uncle has been hospitalized with a concussion and broken leg, and then the next morning when he calls his supervisor, he learns that he’s been laid off. The job wasn’t all that great, but it was better than nothing. Now, he has to decide where to go and what to do after he’s done taking care of his incapacitated uncle.

Holly Creek has a lot of pretty sights, including a young, sexy gardener, who Jefferson Lee finds very attractive. But it doesn’t seem to be mutual, and it comes as a surprise when he slowly starts to become more than friends with the local sheriff, another good-looking man, and this one seems to find Jefferson Lee attractive. Out and proud, Sheriff Zane wants something more with Jefferson Lee, but he’s worried that the cute young man is only in town temporarily.

Fate has plans for the duo, however, and after a series of misadventures, Jefferson Lee finds a good reason to stay in Holly Creek and pursue a relationship with Zane.

In the second story, Spring Fever, after a series of mysterious phone calls and the arrival of yet another good-looking man to their town, Jefferson Lee and his best friend Clover manage to get hauled off to jail in the back of the police cruiser with a furious Zane driving.

Are his days with Zane numbered? Can he possibly find happiness with a man who keeps secrets? And who will the mystery man turn out to be?

This was one of those sweet, simple stories that would make a good beach read. I’d normally recommend it, however, I just can’t get past that cliffhanger, and I didn’t see any further stories linked to it, making me think Spring Fever is the end of the series. And then there’s the fact that the narrator, Matt Armstrong, was quite boring and gave Zane the voice of a fifty year old. And Jefferson Lee’s voice wasn’t much better. So no points for narration at all. If you want something southern and simple, with lots of small town gossip and politics, and not much more, you may like this one. But I’d recommend the e-book over the audio version.

The attractive cover by Alexandria Corza features a very cute, blond, young man leaning against a turquoise wood fence. Very bright and colorful, it’s easy to imagine the man is Jefferson Lee.

A Stella Review: Picked Fresh (Naked Organics #2) by Posy Roberts

RATING  4,5 out of 5 stars

Picked FreshIs five thousand miles far enough to say I love you?

Hudson Oliva loves stability. He was a throwaway teen before finding Kaleidoscope Gardens, but has since thrived at the commune. When Jude Garrity moves in, life gets even better, but Hudson still craves more. He knows he has to be satisfied with their exclusive status being temporary and that Jude will eventually navigate his full sexual awakening with their other housemates.

Hudson has a journey of his own to make. It might only require going home to settle his grandmother’s estate, but he plans to use his time away to figure out how to temper his feelings for Jude and bury his jealousy once and for all. But when Jude joins him on his trip, Hudson falls even deeper in love, especially after Jude stands by his side when he finally confronts his mother for rejecting him.

However, it’s not all hearts and flowers while they travel. They’re over two thousand miles from home when Hudson learns a ruthless corporate farm threatens the commune they both love. In order to save their way of life, Hudson must ask his mother for help. And if he wants a chance at a stable future with Jude, he has to tell him the truth about his feelings, no matter if it ruins the harmony he’s tried so hard to preserve.

I’m sure I already said this but I want to repeat myself, Posy Roberts never disappoints me. I don’t know, I just love what she writes. Simple. I was waiting for Picked Fresh since January when I first read Farm Fresh. I was dying to know how the story between Hudson and Jude would evolve. I got my wish fulfilled.

Picked Fresh is very different from the first book, because the majority of the story develops on the journey Hudson needs to begin in order to come back to his grandmother’s land and settle her property after her death. Journey that will lead him to his mum, the one who did nothing to forbid her husband from throwing out her son from their house. Moreover it is unbearable to Hudson to leave behind the commune, Leo and Charlie, most of all Jude, the young man who took his heart in the previous months. The same man who is working like crazy on his school assignments so he can join Hudson aboard on a peculiar VW camper. Unexpectedly this journey will lead Jade to his family too and he will finally get some closure and some love from his brothers and sister.

The book is really well done and written, I liked the plot, I loved how both characters were able to be so close and open to each other, on so many levels their journey is so intense and strong, it was very simple to connect and relate with their happiness and all the fears they are afraid of meeting at the end of the journey. But no worries, there is an HEA, sweet, brave and needed.

I’m very satisfied with Picked Fresh and I can’t wait for the next book in the Naked Organics series, I’m ready to leave Hudson and Jude’s love behind, and follow a new couple and their life in Kaleidoscope Gardens commune.

Just a note, the series needs to be read in order.

The cover art by Natasha Snow follows the style of the cover of Farm Fresh and it is simply and beautiful

An Alisa Review: Sign Here, Please by Feral Sephrian

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Sign Here PleaseDustin has a decent life, all things considered. He’s an overnight manager for his hometown grocery store, knows several languages, and doesn’t have much drama to deal with. Then one summer night there’s a new delivery guy who happens to be a blast from Dustin’s past.

Zach is an old high school crush of Dustin’s who has gotten better with age. Now all Dustin can see about himself is how he still lives with his parents and couldn’t get a man like Zach in his wildest dreams. He silently laments to his co-manager Moira through American Sign Language, but she won’t let him give up just yet. Even though Dustin has trouble believing her, will this opportunity wind up as a failed delivery?

Ferial Sephrian is a new author for me and I really enjoyed this short story.  Dustin is content with his life, if not completely happy.  When his high school crush is the new delivery guy at work he isn’t sure if he should take a chance or not.

We didn’t see much about Dustin’s past, but I could feel how little self confidence he had in his personal life.  He is hesitant to open himself up and has to fight within himself to get the courage.  There is a nice HFN ending which lets the reader to wonder about the future.

The cover art is nice and consistent with the series.

EXCERPT

I found my usual bench unoccupied. Thank goodness. It sat underneath a giant oak tree that provided a good amount of shade. About a hundred feet away was a set of playground equipment for kids. Since it was Sunday evening, there weren’t many kids around.

The screech and clicks of skateboards on metal had me looking around like I’d just entered a parallel universe. What the hell?

Where there used to be old basketball hoops with raggedy nets, there now stood a half-pipe and other random obstacles used for skateboarding tricks. A half dozen teenagers and young adults whizzed around each other. Some on boards, others on rollerblades. All of them moving at high speed.

There was a lot of laughing, and every so often someone shouted, “Check this out,” before trying some stunt on the rail, usually resulting in a fall or stumble.

Squealing kids on a swing set I could drown out. But this, I wasn’t so sure about. It was new. And distracting.

One young man in particular stood out. Mostly because he had bright orange hair that spiked in every direction, possibly looking like it could impale a person if they were to touch it. Like a cactus. He also looked a bit older than the teenagers that surrounded him, which might explain why they all seemed to look up to him like he was a god.

He wore a black zip-up sweatshirt, though it was warm enough to go without, and jeans that were skintight.

Once I started watching him, I noticed that the other skaters watched him too. He had talent. He kept his balance well, and his moves seemed effortless. While the other skaters floundered and wobbled as they zoomed around, he kept calm and collected.

I didn’t understand the appeal of skateboarding, especially on a half-pipe. What was the purpose of putting yourself in harm’s way like that? Might as well throw myself down a flight of stairs if I wanted to break a bone.

Orange-haired Guy stood on the deck of the half-pipe. He stared down the slope below, his face unreadable. He didn’t call the others to gather around and watch, though I had a feeling they would anyway.

He took a deep breath and hopped on his board.

I held my breath, like I was the one up there. I watched in wonder as he gained momentum, back and forth, up and down the half-pipe. Once he had enough speed he began his flips. It looked amazing to me. Him flipping in the air, his feet staying on the board as he spun, then landing perfectly to do it all over again. I guess I had never bothered to watch any skateboarding before. Maybe I would have if they had looked like this skateboarder.

My nose pressed against the chain-link fence that surrounded the skate park before I even realized I had walked closer. At least I started breathing again.

He stopped just as quickly as he started. Landing back on the deck of the half-pipe, like he hadn’t just done something incredible. And maybe it wasn’t to him; maybe that was just another day in the life. To me it was pretty cool.

The other skaters around cheered and gave him high fives as he made his way through the park. Just like that, he left. He hit the sidewalk and hopped back onto his board, flying down the street like it was made for him.

Synopsis

When Ezra tries to blackmail Chef Yael about being trans, she throws him out of her restaurant and immediately reports him to the queen. But when police find Ezra stabbed to death, Queen Shulamit realizes he may have also tried to extort someone more dangerous than a feisty old lady.

Shulamit’s royal investigation leads her to an international terrorist plot to destroy her country’s economy—and worse, her first love, Crown Princess Carolina of Imbrio, may be involved. This is a love story between wives, between queen and country, and between farmers and the crops they grow.

Excerpt

“What’s that one? It looks like a map.”

Shulamit shifted papers around. “Mmm,” she agreed, turning the paper slightly and studying it more closely. “It’s a map of Perach. But I don’t know what all this mess is.” She squinted and shook her head. “I don’t know; it looks familiar, somehow.”

“Well, you do run the country.”

“This line… these patterns…”

With one arm folded across her midsection and the other arm upright so that her fist rested against her nose, Shulamit raked her memories. Those swirly bits. That pair of streaks. Why did they look so familiar? Why did she feel like she’d seen it before, what seemed like ages ago before the emotional upheaval of visiting Imbrio again and seeing Carolina?

“Oh, my God!” Heat flared in Shulamit’s cheeks. “Rivka, this makes no sense, but—Guard! Who’s out there?”

One of the guards appeared at the doorway. “Majesty?”

Shulamit held out one pointing finger. “Can you please bring me my latest notes on our agricultural pests?”

“Absolutely, Majesty.” He disappeared into the sunlight.

Rivka squinted at her. “I don’t get it.”

“You think I do?” Shulamit skin tingled as she waited for the papers to show up and either prove her wrong or show that she was absolutely right, thus opening up nothing but a cartload of further questions. Both hands fidgeted with the ends of her filmy yellow scarf.

Shulamit felt like every second was bloated and lazy until the guard reappeared. Where was he? Finally, the requested papers arrived, and she tore into them with such ferocity that several fell onto the floor and had to be retrieved.

“There!” she finally exclaimed triumphantly.

“What?” Rivka leaned over her shoulder eagerly, and Shulamit heard a soft thud as Isaac leapt off Riv’s shoulder onto the back of her throne to get a better view.

“The olive blight,” said Shulamit, her lips barely moving as she tried to make sense of the completely unexpected connection. “Ezra drew a map of the olive blight, and put it in the middle of his blackmail notes.”

“Is there anything else on the paper?” said Isaac in his normal voice.

Shulamit turned it over. “Oh, I’m so nervous, I’m not thinking straight. This is the map I already had.”

She flipped over the correct parchment. In Ezra’s lazy scrawl, it said,

Imbrian man (Name: Rui?) *possibly leader

Imbrian man with missing tooth. Drinks like a fish.

Perachi woman (from Lovely Valley?) Money-minded.

Unknown man (Light skinned. Imbrian?)

Unknown woman (Perachi?)

Who is “André?”

“There is no way this means anything good.” Thoughts whirled through Shulamit’s mind, thoughts that she was afraid to put to words. What did Imbrio have to do with agricultural pests? What about—what about Carolina?

Malkeleh,” said Isaac, interrupting her mental maelstrom. “Let me see Ezra’s map again.”

Shulamit flipped the paper back over.

“Look,” said Isaac. “His map—the infestation goes down the river straight into the Lovely Valley.”

Shulamit shook her head slowly and groped around for Rivka’s hand. She clung to her friend’s arm with both hands like it was a bellpull, then hugged it tightly to her chest. “Whatever this is, we have to stop it. We have to stop them.

A MelanieM Review: Kissing Alex (Bodyguards Inc. #6) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5

Kissing AlexMartial arts expert Lewis is the kind of bodyguard who slips under most people’s radar. Quiet, reserved, but constantly on alert, he’ll do his job, keep his charges safe, then relax by reading Shakespeare in his spare time.

When he’s given a case involving a spoiled celebrity singer, Lewis isn’t all that impressed. The job is nothing but babysitting a pretty boy, and he’s used to diplomatic postings with depth and challenge. What could he possibly have in common with the man he’s being forced to look after?

Alex became the envy of many when he and his fellow bandmates won second place in a huge TV talent show. He has more money than he knows what to do with, no life goals, an ex-boyfriend selling a sex tape and now, someone who wants him dead, or at the very least maimed.

Can Lewis keep Alex safe, even when things usually in his control go to hell? Is running to a remote Scottish island the only way for them to stay alive?

I’ve missed several stories in R.J. Scott’s Bodyguards, Inc. series but if Kissing Alex is any indication of this series, I’m going to have to rectify that asap.  I loved this story.  Its everything I look for in a romance and more.  It has two wonderful MCs with a combustible connection to each other, a location that called to me, and a storyline that had outstanding secondary characters that I wanted to know more about.  It also had several other threads running through it to keep it interesting and moving along at a fast clip.

Although this is part of a series, you can read it as a standalone and come at the characters blind as I did.  Scott gives us a complete portrait of each, filling in bits and pieces of each character’s history along the way until each man is fully alive, breathing before you on the page.  I had no favorites here.  Both Lewis and Alex each won my heart equally.  But the real piece of perfection here was putting the two men down on the island of  Stoirmeil, isolated away from  most things we take for granted like wifi but on home ground for Lewis.  R.J. Scott made me see that island, from the magic of the stone circle to the daily lives of its small group of its inhabitants.  She  also made me feel their fierce, heart deep love for their land and history.  I got to watch Alex fall for the island as much as he did for Lewis, it was the perfect backdrop for their love to grow and for the story to take place.

Quite frankly, I forgot about the rest of the story, the bodyguard aspect so drawn in by the magic of the location and their romance.  It was wrapped up nicely and I loved the ending.  But was I ready for this to end?  Never.  I wanted more of their lives.  I want them married, I want more of this island, and that family.  R.J. Scott created something special here.  And it was difficult to let it go even as happy as I was with the ending.

So, RJ, if you are listening, a side story please?  Let’s return to Stoirmeil….on a bonny summer day, for a wedding on the beach, maybe two.  In the meantime, I highly recommend this story.  Its romantic, it has men in kilts, its sexy and it will make you want to book a plane ticket to Scotland and then a ferry ride to the next island out.  Trust me on this.

Cover art by Meredith Russell. The model is the perfect representation of Alex. But a huge opportunity was missed by not showing us something of the beauty of the Scottish island of Stoirmeil.  That makes this cover way too bland and not tied into a main theme of the storyline.

A Jeri Review: Dinner for One by Meg Harding

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Dinner for OneBastien is head chef and part owner of a VERY French restaurant that has gotten nothing but rave reviews, has lines out the door and a reservation list months in advance. James is a food critic for a well known newspaper and gives Bastien his first not so rave review. No big deal right? Until James buys a pastry from Bastien at his nephews base sale and is shocked to find out that the pastry chef and the restaurant chef are on in the same. Even worse, he is incredibly attracted to him.

Bastien and James begin a romantic relationship. And it is rather sweet and romantic. Being that one is a chef and the other a critic- although Bastien doesn’t know that- much of their relationship revolves around food. How very French!

The deeper they get the more worried James is for Bastien to find out who he really is. The guy who panned his restaurant.

Some of the things I really liked about this book: the sex is hot hot hot! So hot that Bastien reverts to French while in the throes of passion. Whew.

Both James and Bastien are very close to their families. I love that. I love that Bastien is always there for his sister and niece and that James has a brood of siblings to go to. It was all very sweet, but very realistic.

THE FOOD! Don’t read this book while you are hungry. Seriously. It is akin to grocery shopping while hungry.

The relationship was very equal in my opinion. There was never one man trying to woo the other while the other sat back. Well, until after the big fight.

Speaking of the fight. The way James goes about trying to win Bastien back is just perfect. Seriously perfect. It was so sweet, so perfect. And Bastien’s answers to everything were wonderful. A bit vague, but you really need to read it.

My only nit picky, didn’t like a lot things: Bastien seemed to get out of work pretty early usually. For a hot restaurant in NYC, he wouldn’t be walking out the door until at least 1am in not later. Not 10. And except for a one here and there, James seemed to abandon his critic job while he was with Bastien. How else to eat elaborate meals together late at night?

For a switch, no one is a jerk, no one is in the closet, no one was abandoned by family for being gay. All around it was a new, refreshing read. And I believe there are more in the series to come. Making my reservation now.

The cover art by Reese Dante is absolutely perfect, with the two men in the background and yummy food front and center.

James Bryant suffers from a joint disorder and has to use crutches to get around. The crutches aren’t just because of the disorder, though—they are the result of an attack by a former lover. James is an artist, but he’s currently working for a design firm so that he’ll have a safety net income and benefits. As a junior in the firm, he’s surprised when he’s given a prestigious job to design the interior concepts for a hotel catering to LGBTQ couples. And that’s where he meets Seth Burns—the gorgeous, wealthy, CEO of Carrington Enterprises, and unfortunately, also a dominant personality. And the last thing James wants is to get involved with someone like his former lover. Too bad, too, because this one is super hot and apparently very interested in James.

Seth Burns can’t believe his luck when he’s assigned the very talented James Bryant for his project, but he’s quickly on the defensive when he learns what happened to James in the past. Willing to put his need for control on the back burner until he and James get to know one another, he finds that the sweet young man is not only more talented than he originally assumed, he’s also more emotionally fragile. And when James is confronted with his ex-Dom again and further injured, Seth helps James pursue having the man prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

After Seth and James initially become involved, Seth encourages him to pursue his career as an artist and cut back at the design firm. Not long after that Seth learns that the sister of his heart has been killed in an accident, and he’s been named guardian for her daughter, the daughter for whom Seth was the sperm donor. James immediately opens his heart and his home to both Seth and six-year-old Dani, and the journey toward the formation of their new family begins. But the journey is not without multiple bumps along the road, including yet another threat to James’s life—this time from an unexpected source. Will these men ever be able to overcome all the odds against them? It’s difficult, but with the help of the bodyguard Seth hired and James’s BFF, Chase, they manage to overcome the odds against them and find the path to their happiness.

This is my first book from this author and I enjoyed the story, even with all the twists and turns. I liked the characters, both MC and secondary, and I was pleased to see there’s more coming up in this series. My major disappointment was with the audiobook narration of Max Lehnan. The poor narration placed a burden on the story that I found difficult to overcome. His narration was so poor I can only give it one star. However, rather than average that with the four stars I’d give the story, I am going with 3.5 stars overall because I hate to penalize the author’s rating for something like this. I see that there’s a different narrator for the last two books in the series so I’ll definitely be moving to them next. And I recommend the e-book version to MM readers who enjoy stories with family drama, especially those who find happiness with family of the heart.

The cover by Reese Dante is done in a very soft, soothing, watercolor with a faded background headshot of two men about to kiss. In the forefront is a hand holding a paintbrush and with rings on each finger of the hand, signifying the ring splints worn by MC James—the perfect cover for this book.

An Ali Review: Wildflowers by Suki Fleet

Rating:  5 out of 5 stars

WildflowersXavi doesn’t believe in love anymore. Love has never changed the outcome of anything. It has only hurt him.

Sam is sick, and he wants one last thing. He wants Xavi to be with him, to stay with him until the end. Xavi drops everything and promises Sam he will be there.

As they travel across the countryside in a stolen sea-green Cadillac, they search for something neither has the courage to admit he’s looking for. But as the days slip away, Xavi isn’t sure he can keep his promise; he isn’t sure about anything. He can’t help Sam do this. He can’t stand by and watch Sam suffer, can’t be content to let Sam give up.

Saving Sam becomes the only thing that makes any sense, the only thing Xavi wants. Loving Sam becomes the most important promise he will ever make. Now he just has to convince Sam that life—and love—are worth fighting for.

I’m not even sure I have the words to express how much I loved this book.  It’s told from Xavi’s point of view as he struggles to come to terms with, not only his relationship with Sam, but the many painful choices he’s made in his life.  The writing is haunting and melancholy throughout most of the story but it drew me in and I couldn’t put the book down once I had started it. whoI highlighted many passages that I thought were especially moving. It’s a short story (only 80 pages) but there is a lot of plot and even more emotion packed in to it.  The characters were richly done and the emotional pain Xavi is going through jumps off the pages at you.  I found myself empathizing so much with him.  Most of the story revolves around Xavi and Sam but there are a host of side characters that add to the plot and  who were also really well done.   It is an angsty story (but you knew that from the blurb) and I’m not going to lie, my eyes filled with tears more than once, but it is well worth every minute of the pain because there is beauty here too.
Cover art by Garrett Leigh. I like the cover and think it fits really well with the plot of the story.
