Love Letters

by Kris Ripper

My phone dinged with a message: You have been invited to join the following conversation: JCK. Click to join.

I clicked.

Keith: Yay! Cam’s here! Hi, Cam! (^_^)/ (That’s me waving at you, but I actually had to look it up, ha ha ha ha.)

Josh: He literally googled until he found one he liked. You can’t imagine how many waving text things there are, seriously.

Cameron: Hello. What is this? I had to install something.

Keith: It’s a group chat! So we can all talk to each other!

Cameron: Aren’t we going out to dinner?

Keith: *sigh*

Josh: Yep. Still going to dinner at The Grill. You’re gonna wear a waistcoat, right, Cam?

Keith: …

Keith: This is what you’re looking for, Cam: *blush*

I blushed just looking at the word blush. I shook my head.

Cameron: I can’t type that.

Josh: Is it true, though?

Keith: …

Keith: Your silence speaks volumes.

Keith: I’m just saying.

Josh: I’m going to picture Cam in that waistcoat with gold thread. You know the one, Keith?

Keith: Oh yeah. The black one, with all that intricate gold details. God, that’s so hot.

Josh: So. Hot.

I took slow breaths and glanced around. Maybe to make sure no one was watching me (no one was; I might as well have been in an invisible bubble in the booth). Maybe just to clear my blush.

More messages dinged.

Keith: Yeah, wear that one.

Keith: Cam?

Keith: Okay, okay, we’ll stop rubbing one out thinking about you in that waistcoat.

Josh: He’s never going to come back if you say things like “rubbing one out”.

Keith: Sorry. We aren’t rubbing one out. I mean, obviously it’d realistically be rubbing TWO out.

Josh: Unless it’s me in control of exactly who’s rubbing what, babe. Don’t press your luck.

Now I kind of hoped Keith pressed his luck.

Keith: *googling*

Keith: Oh my god, never mind. I have to scrub my brain now.

Keith: People are perverted.

Keith: Like…I can’t unsee what I have seen.

Keith: You guys, seriously, there are some really disturbing emoji sets.

Cameron: What’s an emoji set?

Josh: Welcome back, Cam. And don’t think too much about emoji sets.

Josh: Anyway.

Josh: We’re going to dinner. Keith and I are dressing up.

Keith: We are?

Keith: I mean…yeah, we are.

Keith: I’m already planning what we’re gonna wear.

Josh: And we look forward to spending the night with you, Cam. Your place or ours?

I swallowed hard, thinking about the two of them dressed up. Thinking about sleeping next to them. I loved their apartment, but my thumb hovered over the Y and hesitated.

Keith: My spidey sense tells me Cam wants to be at home tonight.

Josh: Sounds good. Plus, we can bring over the stuff we were planning to bring over.

Cameron: Stuff?

Josh: We picked up some your-place pajamas. Nothing big.

Keith: And slippers. Got you a pair, too.

Josh: I forgot. And bathrobes.

I stared at the messages and my heart rate sped up. I stared so long the screen went black.

They’d bought things specifically to keep at my apartment for when they spent the night. The thought filled me with a fizzy floating sensation.

My phone vibrated.

Josh: We don’t have to, Cam. If you don’t want us to.

I fumbled the phone in my haste to reassure them.

Cameron: No, no. Please. Yes.

Cameron: I mean, yes, of course.

Cameron: *blush*

Keith: ❤ ❤ ❤ Love you, Cam.

Josh: All those hearts are from me, too.

Cameron: ❤ ❤ One for each of you.

Cameron: I look forward to seeing the slippers.

Keith: We’re gonna match. It’ll be great.

Josh: We’ll see you later, Cam.

Cameron: I’ll see you both tonight.

I put my phone face down on my desk and realized my hands were shaking.

They had brought so much beauty, and grace, and warmth into my life. But I’d never expected to love them. And I certainly never expected them to return the sentiment.

Heart, heart, heart.

About One Life to Lose

Cameron Rheingold is the kind of guy who takes a book to a bar. He’s a loner by nature, but he has to engage with the community to keep his movie theater business afloat. When two young men stay after a Cary Grant film showing to chat, Cameron thinks he might have made some new friends—but their interest is more than friendly.

Josh is charismatic, and every smile is a little bit seductive. Keith is sweet and kind, with a core of steel Cameron can sense even when Keith’s on his knees. Cameron is willing to be the couple’s kinky third, but that’s it. He refuses to risk complicating things with his growing devotion, even if being with Josh and Keith feels more right than anything else ever has.

When the three of them are attacked by the killer roaming La Vista, Cameron must decide what’s more important: pretending the assault never happened and he’s the same loner he used to be, or coming clean to Josh and Keith about how much he loves them, even if they can never return his feelings.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Charlotte Ashe, author of The Heart of All Worlds Book 2: The King and the Criminal.

Hi Charlotte, thank you for agreeing to this interview and welcome to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Thank you so much for having me! I’m excited to be here!

I have been writing for as long as I can remember, and it has always been a passion of mine. Recently, I decided it was time to dust off that old dream and seriously pursue it. My first novel, The Heart of All Worlds, Book 1: The Sidhe was published in 2015, and The King and the Criminal is the second book in the series. It is a love story at its heart, about an elfin king’s uneasy alliance with a criminal he was supposed to bring to justice, against a backdrop of political upheaval.

  • Why did you choose to write LGBTQ stories?

As a queer person myself, I grew up wanting to read more stories about people like me, so that is definitely part of it. I also love speculative fiction, and I believe it is the perfect genre for really exploring issues of gender and sexuality in the social structures of fictional worlds. Fantasy can be an amazing escape, but it can be difficult to sink into that escape as an LGBTQ person when it’s just an escape to another homophobic and rigidly gendered world.  LGBTQ stories are the stories of myself and the people in my community, even when those stories are set in completely fantastical worlds.

  • What inspired you to write your first book?

Basically, I set out to write something that I’d always wanted to read but hadn’t been able to find. While many published works of science fiction and fantasy do explore issues of gender and sexuality, high fantasy tends to stick to stories told in rigidly heterosexist and patriarchal worlds. I started writing The Heart of All Worlds trilogy because I wanted to write a work of high fantasy that really felt like high fantasy, while breaking a lot of the traditional rules of the genre.

  • When and why did you begin writing?

I can’t remember a time that I didn’t write! I really started writing probably around age 8, and I would create “books” of photocopied stories. I especially loved writing horror stories as a kid, and that ended up progressing to fantasy and science fiction by the time I was in middle school. I always had a ridiculously active imagination—my mother kept audio tapes of me spinning stories as early as 3 years old. I came up with all sorts of things—one of my favorites was that there were apparently purple people with flat bodies that lived between the inner and outer walls of our house. I even made up some words in their language. I was 4. If I hadn’t started writing, I don’t know what I would have done with an imagination like that.

  • What are you current projects?

Right now I’m working on the final book in The Heart of All Worlds trilogy, which will be coming out sometime in 2017. I am also plotting out my next trilogy, which will be set in the same universe as The Heart of All Worlds and will feature some of the same characters, but with a particular focus on the women in the Keshell family. And I’m always thinking of new ideas for future books—I keep a little notebook in my purse that is brimming with ideas.

  • Off topic: What secret talents do you have?

That’s a tough one! I’m really good at Tetris, does that count? I’m also pretty fantastic at making those little origami stars out of strips of magazine pages. More seriously, though, I am very good at crisis management. It is a skill I have honed in my day job working with homeless teens, but it has always come naturally to me. For whatever reason, I am able to stay very calm, with laser focus on what needs to get done, when a crisis occurs. I think it’s just how I’m wired. It has been vitally helpful in many situations throughout my life.

The King & The Criminal ~ EXCERPT

It came back to Firae like a cold fist slowly squeezing his heart, so slowly that he didn’t realize it was happening until the pain was overwhelming. He swallowed. They couldn’t avoid the truth. And he couldn’t bear another dishonest moment between them.

“Five months,” Firae said.

Tash made an inquisitive noise; his eyes never left Firae’s.

“I have five months to complete my mission. I promised to help Brissa, and I intend to keep that promise, but…”

“But we don’t know if we will fulfill the prophecy in time,” Tash supplied.

“The Doctrine has been compromised. The Border is unstable.”

Tash nodded. “I know.” His voice had grown very soft.

“If I don’t return with the elf responsible…” Firae forced himself to maintain eye contact rather than close his eyes and cower in the face of reality. For, whatever Tash might think, Firae was king of Yestralekrezerche, and The Border and its surrounding lands were his responsibility. “I can sacrifice tens of thousands of lives or I can sacrifice you, Tash. I—I don’t want to, but—”

Tash closed his eyes. “I know,” he said, his voice barely more than a whisper. He swallowed thickly. “I know.”

Firae searched for anything else he could say, but everything that came to mind sounded hollow. It was true that the Council might show Tash mercy for his pure intent, but the amount of blood and essence they would need from him to restabilize The Border would likely be more than his body could withstand, even if they did wish to spare him. So Firae just watched Tash until he opened his eyes again.

“I know,” Tash said one final time, looking at Firae with such resignation that it was painful to witness. And then Tash turned to face the wall with his arms wrapped tightly around himself. Firae moved to fit behind him and wrapped an arm tentatively around Tash’s waist.

“I would like you to go back to your own quarters now,” Tash said firmly.

“Tash—” Firae began to protest.

“Just go, Firae. Please.”

Firae swallowed around a lump that had found its way into his throat and slowly removed his arm. “Of course. I…” There was nothing left to say. “Goodnight, Tash.”

Tash didn’t say anything.

The doctor waved them through the house and into the back garden without even offering a pot of tea; he seemed quite aware of the urgency of the situation.

Tash and Cliope inhaled sharply at the scene that greeted them.

The sidhe lay on his stomach in the soft grass with a thin blanket draped over his buttocks and back. His features were illuminated by the moons, and he was—

He was lovely: long dark hair and full pink lips; skin pale but warm-hued, smooth as marble; sweet, lean muscles. The boy—man, he was a man, but he couldn’t have been one for long—was as perfect as a sculpture. Tash could barely breathe at the sight of him.

“Well,” Cliope whispered on an exhale. “That—that is a good-looking man.”

Tash laughed softly and looked to Dr. Lasceli, who nodded his assent for Tash to approach the other sidhe.

Tash walked to the unconscious elf and bent down beside him. He knew nothing about the man; he could be friend, foe, or someone to whom Tash would be indifferent if they’d met under different circumstances. But he was sidhe and he was in need of assistance, and Tash—

Well. Tash was different now. At least he was trying to be.

Tash settled cross-legged in the damp grass beside the other elf and took the man’s cool, limp hand in his own. Up close, the man was even more striking. He looked younger than Tash, perhaps by fifty years or even a century, and his dark hair was a glossy near-black. His eyelashes were equally black, sweeping to dramatic lengths against his fine cheekbones. His long, slender ears were dotted with small hoops and cuffs of copper and silver all the way up to their points. Some of the earrings were connected to one another with tangled chains.

Tash closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. He could feast upon the other man’s beauty like the greedy, touch-starved celibate he was, or he could do what he could to save the man’s life.

Centering his own power, Tash released the man’s hand and checked the four points of his body.

His midsection gave no response, which didn’t surprise Tash. If the man wielded water, being submerged would probably have revived him, even if he had lost consciousness before falling into the water. His forehead pulsed warm but not hot—probably low-grade compulsion, healing, or telekinesis, but not the center of his power, unless he wielded an even weaker expression of the Common caste than Tash himself. If this was the man’s only point of power, his chances of survival were slim.

Tash moved his hands to the tops of the other man’s feet and felt warmth again, which was a relief—two points of power made his survival that much more likely, after all.

Tash wet his lips nervously before proceeding to the final point. He hadn’t dared to hope that the one way in which he was most likely to help would be available to him, but as he gently lifted the man’s shoulder so that he could slip his hand below the sidhe’s chest and hold it over his heart, Tash’s entire body gave a jolt and he gasped. His eyes slipped closed at the heat that shot up his arm and into his own heart.

About the author

Author Teodora KostovaHi, my name is Teodora and I live in London with my husband and my son. I’ve been writing ever since I can remember, but it became my full time job a few years ago when I decided that everything else I’ve tried bores me to death and I have to do what I’ve always wanted to do, but never had the guts to fully embrace. I’ve been a journalist, an editor, a personal assistant and an interior designer among other things, but as soon as the novelty of the new, exciting job wears off, I always go back to writing. Being twitchy, impatient, loud and hasty are not qualities that help a writer, because I have to sit alone, preferably still, and write for most of the day, but I absolutely love it. It’s the only time that I’m truly at peace and the only thing I can do for more than ten minutes at a time – my son has a bigger attention span than me.

When I’m procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every Nintendo Wii game by a very inventive kid.

Don’t be shy and get in touch – I love connecting with my readers.

About Passing Shadows

Man is like a mere breath; His days are like a passing shadow.
Psalm 144:4

Passing Shadows is a trilogy of short stories with a lesbian main character, Li Liang, who is one of the sole surviving witnesses of the destruction of Earth. The stories tell of the beginning of a long exodus across the galaxy looking for a haven where mankind can start again.

Blurb

Li Liang has found a berth to suit her: chief pilot and first officer of the all-female crew of an old space freighter, the Sappho. Then one ordinary, unremarkable morning, Liang retunes the Sappho’s communications systems just in time to catch the breathless, terrible accounts from Mars of the total destruction of Earth.

Earth’s a cinder. The unknown alien race that destroyed it has left Mars, too, in flames and is ravening outward from the solar system, devouring every human colony on the way.

Liang’s one of the few survivors, racing ahead of the Devourers, rescuing as many frightened, shocked people as she can. Will Liang and the pitiful remnants of humanity find a new haven, somewhere to start again? Or will she, too, echo the dreadful last message coming out of their dead home?

They’re coming. Oh God, they’re coming.

Excerpt

From Overthrown By Strangers:

It seems to be some sort of cosmic joke, a reversal of the old creation myths. Only the gods are laughing, because this time God has thrown a stone in a pond. Earth went down, smashed by the rock, and the waves are surging out in a circle from its drowning, ripple after ripple after ripple.

Colony after colony.

If Earth had been created in seven days, it had been destroyed in seven hours. Now every hour brings more devastation. It isn’t just Earth going dark. Whoever, whatever, the enemy is, their resources are unfathomable. They’re implacable and unstoppable, ravening their way out from Earth in an ever-expanding circle, shattering everything in their path. So many dead, so many with no chance to escape.

So many lost to the monsters. The destroyers. The eaters.

“Devourers,” I say.

The skipper gives me a sharp look. Then she nods. “A good name for them, love. A very good name.”

She looks tired. Jaded. Worn out.

I lean over her and press my lips to her hair. “You need to rest.”

“Later. There’ll be time to rest later.” She doesn’t say that will be when we’re all dead, but she might as well. “Set course for Egereia.”

It takes a little while. While I drop the Sappho into normal space to reset the hyperdrive engines and plot the navigation, she calls the rest to the bridge and tells them that whoever’s in command at Daemon Station has finally made a decision and humanity has a survival plan. Of sorts.

“We’re going to run. We can’t stop them,” the skipper tells us.

Being helpless, being the butterfly caught in the spider’s web, is sickening. She gives us a minute to cry and mourn, but we’re all mostly quiet. Only Edie lets out a sob. The rest of us weep in silence. I can barely see the navigation controls, and my eyes sting like poison.

They’ve formed a sort of huddle, down on the floor where we’d sat and listened to Earth and Mars being eaten. No one wants to be alone, and we ground ourselves and each other by touch; holding hands, or arms around each other, mouths against another’s cheek. Connection, that’s what’s keeping us going. When I’ve put us back into hyperspace, I join the skipper. She’s in the centre of the group now, one arm around Baum’s waist. I’m pulled into the huddle, held safe, and take her free hand in mine. Her fingers squeeze hard against mine.

“Daemon will be the gathering point,” the skipper says. “We’re to get as many people on board as we can, and rendezvous there. Egereia’s the closest colony to us, and we’ll head there and see what’s to be done.”

In the Spotlight: Ash and Cinders (A Gabriel Church Tale #3) by Rodd Clark (excerpt and giveaway)

ash-and-cinders

Title:  “Ash and Cinders”

Genre:  M/M Romantic Thriller

Author:  Rodd Clark

Ash and Cinders is the third book in the Gabriel Church Tales. It’s been a successful series from the debut of Rubble and the Wreckage, and continues the story of a killer’s transformation from a soulless and driven madman to someone desperate to understand himself and his place in the universe in Torn and Frayed.

The final book, Ash and Cinders, places our main character of Gabriel Church in the greatest danger of his life. As a successful serial killer with delusions of some grand design in every murder, he proves to the reader that he is a remorseless and dangerous man. But the Gabriel Church tales are not what they appear, as fans find themselves rooting for the killer’s success and hoping that he will find love and peace with his one-time biographer, Christian Maxwell.

The series has received glowing reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, so I encourage you to see for yourselves what the fuss is all about. The first book in the series, Rubble and the Wreckage will be only 99c, and the second book, Torn and Frayed only $2.99, during the tour and up to the release of Ash & Cinders on December 5.

“…this book pulls no punches, makes no apologies, and basically kicks ass and takes names! Grab it if you want a mindbending, sexy read that will leave you wanting book two with a quickness!” (Bike Book Reviews)

“The sequel to RUBBLE AND THE WRECKAGE has torn and frayed my nerve ends to the extent that it’s difficult to write about it. This book is a careening ride to hell in an old Dodge truck, its slick tires and rusty chassis eating the miles along the hard pavement of southwestern U.S. highways, up the spine of California, to the bones of the northwest its driver had once left behind. It’s a road trip through a diseased mind. It’s the odyssey of a killer, and it’s the voyage of a pitiable soul seeking God.” (Amazon reader)

Book Blurb:

“It’s just the devil’s share. When life evens itself out and every bad guy gets what’s coming to em’ . . . it’s one of the few balancing things life really offers.”

Gabriel Church

Gabriel Church has done a bad, bad thing . . . and normally that doesn’t bother him too much. But everything changed when he met Christian Maxwell. Chris became his unholy grail. The thing he sought more than any other treasure, yet still a priceless pearl beyond his reach. Nothing he does seems to solidify any prospect of them being able to remain together, to live that happily-ever-after story. Even if he were to make a promise to stop his killing in the name of God, it would still only be a salty futility to wet and tempt his lips.

Christian Maxwell discovered a damaged soul inside Church, with a goodness plumbed somewhere below the visible surface. He saw pain shadowing his killer like some trailing footprint left moist in the sand. But he failed to recognize each victim, or the costs of every action the fugitive took for granted. He simply pushed those faceless victims to the dark recesses of his mind, hiding them from plain view as if they were discarded things, recollections intentionally forgotten.

The one thing Church knows with certainty is the writer is the only person who really knows him, and the only man other than himself who possibly understands where they are both headed. But life is about to get more twisted and dangerous. It begins with a backwards Deputy Sheriff and that same ill-fated chance that always prevented him from slowing down his pace or finding a peaceful place to rest with Chris Maxwell by his side.

Excerpt:

Looking at the man from across the room, one would never have imagined how dangerous he actually was. The serial killer was hot and threatening in his own physical way, but there seemed to be a sympathetic kindness scratching below the surface of those mirror-like pupils of his. At times they looked bluish, while other times they appeared to be color of industrial slate. But in that instant, they reminded the deputy of humid childhood summers and seeing a cool slab of concrete in the shade beckoning him to rest upon it.

He had been drawn like a magnet after meeting the man he only knew by the name Carl Whiting. And from the first second they spoke, he found himself wavering under the killer’s impressive build and mischievous crooked smile. He hadn’t known at the time, but the name Carl Whiting was only an alias. Nor did he know that he was meeting a killer who’d claimed a multitude of victims over several years and many miles of this vast country. He only knew there was something unique about his country drawl and those sinful eyes that hinted with sexual tension and risk.

Facing Gabriel Church alone in a room without backup would be intimidating to anyone, to say the least. Even the weight of Deputy Corso’s holstered sidearm didn’t seem to offer him much security. The killer strangely didn’t appear anything but relaxed and surprisingly at peace with himself.

“You know I kinda like the idea of being hunted,” the killer said quietly. “It sort of makes my dick hard, as if you couldn’t tell.”

As he said that, Gabriel readjusted himself in his chair, shifting slightly and opening his legs wider apart. The deputy could see that even concealed under his faded blue Levi’s there was a sizable bulge exposed that indicated he’d been telling the truth. The killer’s smile hadn’t evaporated once since they’d begun talking, and it made the officer think it was intended as his own challenge, daring the deputy to make his move as was expected that he would.

Tis the Season for Holiday Stories and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Tis the Season for Holiday Stories

Have you noticed a preponderance of book covers with snow on them?  Maybe with elves or people with red hats or maybe even a stocking or two?  Yes, its that time of the year when all the wonderful holiday stories are releasing from authors and publishers everywhere.  And its not just Christmas stories but stories from other religions as well, from Jewish holidays such as Hanukkah to Yule, the holiday season is spreading warm, love and special meanings to those involved in the celebrations.

Its a time of giving, and joy.  A time of remembrance, and yes, even sorrow for some. It can be magic.  And it can be painful.  Full of stress and overwhelming optimism for the future.  What a bundle of conflicting emotions this season can bring with it, along with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, when the fear of the dark and loss could be driven back by songs, a yule log and people gathering close together to watch for the rising sun.

What I have always loved most about these stories is the variety.  I never know what to expect from the multitude of stories we get here at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.  Christmas in Space?  You betcha!  Vampires in love?  Yes indeedy!  Stories of Yule and lost visitors in Greenland, yes, one of my favorites last year by Freddy McKay.  This year is no exception.  I finished a wonderful story about loss and recovery during Hanukkah,  review still coming.   There are comedies, dramas, relationships of all kinds…all wrapped up in love and romance.  Be still my heart!  And those of the rest of the reviewers here at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.  We love this time of the year!

In the Spotlight: Cowboys Don’t Come Out by Tara Lain (excerpt and giveaway)

Cowboys Don’t Come Out
by Tara Lain

Blurb:
Rand McIntyre settles for good enough. He loves his small California ranch, raising horses, and teaching riding to the kids he adores—but having kids of his own and someone to love means coming out, and that would jeopardize everything he’s built. Then, despite his terror of flying, he goes on a holiday to Hana, Hawaii with his parents and meets the dark and mysterious Kai Kealoha, a genuine Hawaiian cowboy. Rand takes to Kai’s kid brother and sister as much as he drools over Kai, but the guy sports more prickles than a horned toad, and more secrets than the exotic land he comes from.
Kai’s earned his privacy and lives to protect his “kids.” He ought to stay away from the big, handsome cowboy for everyone’s sake—but since the guy’s just a haole on a short vacation, how much damage can he do? When all of Kai’s worst fears and Rand’s darkest nightmares come true at once, there’s not much chance for two cowboys who can’t—or won’t—come out.

He stopped and tried to hear over the rushing of the surf out beyond the reef if anyone else hid in the dark. No sounds. Fortunately, no big water hit this beach, so he didn’t have to worry about getting swamped. Actually, between the lapping waves and the brilliant moonlight, the scene resembled some fairy-tale romance. Fuck that.

Right where the dry sand verged on the wet, he flopped on his butt. What she’d said—that he settled for a good-enough life. That he wasn’t happy. Don’t I get to decide that?

He leaned back on his elbows. Yeah, but she’s right. I created a whole life—as if I was somebody else. Most people find “the one” and build a future so it suits them both. I imagined a cowboy and slid into his boots—Rand McIntyre. Say that with a drawl, son. Just one problem. I’m gay—always have been—and cowboys don’t come out. Where does that leave me? A-fucking-lone, pardner. Always will be.

You’re not the only gay cowboy.

Have you seen Brokeback Mountain? Shit.

Phosphorescence sparkled on the tops of the waves farther out. Pretty. Guess there could be all kinds of weird man-eating shit in that water.

Do you think more sharks and barracudas swim at night than during the day?

Yeah, right.

He sprang up, stripped his Hawaiian shirt off and tossed it on the sand, then pulled off the shorts his mom had given him. Commando. What would it feel like to have fishes nibbling at his balls? Not like anybody else was doing any nibbling. He strode into the water. Whoa! Not cold, just startling.

When he waded out past his thighs, his penis and balls started to float. He chuckled. Kind of like being a kid in the bathtub. Endless hours of fun playing with your own built-in toys. A few more steps, and he submerged to his shoulders. He gave a tiny shiver. Weird being sunk in inky blackness. Still, the water felt good. He kicked off and swam a few yards out, turned, and stroked back towards shore. He wasn’t a good enough swimmer to push his luck alone at night.

After treading water a couple of minutes, he pulled himself back into the shallows and sat on the hard wet beach. He glanced down. Some shrinkage, but his balls still lay on the sand. Remember to rinse them off or you’ll itch. Slowly he released his breath. What was he going to do? Answer? Same as always. Nothing. He couldn’t risk all the great shit he’d made to try to make it better.

An Alisa Advent Calendar Review Day 9: Pixies and Paperwork by Cassia Rose

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

pixies-and-paperworkMicheal Donovan’s family has kept the peace between mortal and magical realms for generations, but Micheal skipped out on glory for other plans. He finished school, got a nine-to-five, and tried to fit in. When his cousin meets an unfortunate end on All Hallows’ Eve, Micheal abruptly inherits the position of Riftkeeper, along with all the prestige and responsibility he didn’t want. Estranged from his family, Micheal never learned the details of the job. All the grumpy, ancestral spirit now possessing his goldfish can tell him is that a mistake could be catastrophic. Micheal isn’t feeling the holiday cheer, and coworkers’ attempts to encourage him only add to a headache of magical proportions. To make matters worse, Ryan Nickles, Micheal’s colleague and cubicle neighbor, has assembled enough Christmas decorations to attract more pixies than Micheal can hide.

When Micheal’s attempts to find the Winter Court on the week of the solstice leave him with nothing but a bad cold, he fears he’ll be the first Riftkeeper to break the ancient contracts. He’s too stressed to handle Ryan’s attempts to get him into the holiday spirit, but Ryan might know more about the magic of the season than Micheal realizes.

To Micheal his life has just been shot to hell when he inherits the position of Riftkeeper, it’s made worse when he can’t get any answers as to what he is supposed to be doing.  It takes him getting sick for his barriers to be down enough that he doesn’t immediately push Ryan away and realizes he may have the answers to all of his questions.

Micheal and Ryan have worked together for a few years, but Ryan has never been able to break through Micheal’s shell.  When Micheal needs help finding the location of the Winter Court along with a gift Ryan steps in to help when he realizes that he can.  I loved the Micheal is able to let his guard down enough, almost too late, for him to see that Ryan can help him.  This story has a simple HFN ending, but I’m not sure I understand the universe in which the story takes place; I felt a bit confused throughout it.

Cover is ok for the story.
