A MelanieM Release Day Review: Snow & Secrets (Stanford Creek #3) by R.J. Scott as Rozenn Scott

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

snow-and-secrets-by-rj-scottFirst comes trust, then love… then the fight to stay alive.

Pop star Tyler Hart is desperate for peace after a humiliating public scandal. It seems like Stanford Creek may well be the place to lay low. After all, it worked for his friends and former bandmates, Cody and Danny. He borrows a cabin and settles in for a quiet Christmas…well, not quite.

Garrett Campbell is on the run. Wounded in the line of duty, he escapes to the only place he feels safe, Stanford Creek and his brother’s cabin. Only he doesn’t realize he’ll have a roommate, and a sexy one at that.

Amid snow falls and winter winds, passion burns bright. When danger threatens to follow Garrett, he has to decide whether to run again before his secrets could kill him and the man of his dreams.

I’ve not read the other books in the Stanford Creek series but as it turns out, thats fine.  Snow & Secrets, the third story by RJ Scott writing as Rozenn Scott, works great as a standalone.

Scott loves to combine romance and action/adventure in her stories and Snow & Secrets has plenty of both.  Tyler Hart, pop star and member of a popular band, went through a bad breakup.  His actions post breakup?  Well, they led to a drunken night at a bar that ends in a blurry,  misguided bathroom hookup…that went straight to the tabloids.  Outed to all, its affected his band, his friends and Tyler is pressured to the point of panic attacks to get away from it all.

I love how deeply the author is able to get us into the wounded mindset that is Tyler Hart.  He’s in a bad place in every way and the author is able to let us feel his pain and connect us to this troubled man.

Next up?  Garrett Campbell who’s carrying enough emotional baggage (to say nothing of his physical injuries) to fill a 747.  Garrett’s last tour of duty, a secret mission, was one of nightmares.  Garrett carries the mental and emotional scars with him, unable to put it and the questions he has about the mission behind him.  Unable to continue to work as he has, he too needs peace.  And both men end up in a remote cabin in Stanford Creek.  Turns out they have close connections that lead to their being roommates.

Scott gives us two perspectives here, Tyler’s and Garrett’s.  We get to see what has driven both men to this  point and place, we watch them juggle with their pasts which continue to haunt them, their desire for each other in the close quarters, and the passions and strengths that come out when danger follows one of them into the woods.

Its not just the main characters we get to fall in love with. No, RJ Scott (as she is always so good at), gives us a cast of believable warm human beings to pull close around us like a comfortable, snug blanket.  We connect with everyone here.  Sisters, brothers, friends…enough that, even though this works as a standalone story, you want to go back and read the other stories because Stanford Creek has become real and inviting.  And yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing next.  Gong to pick up and dive into the stories I missed next.

I’m hoping that, since some of the mystery was left open-ended, that RJ will be taking this thread involving Garrett and extending it into the next story.  Fingers crossed.  I’d loved to see that happen.

Either way, here’s another RJ Scott story to love and one I recommend.  Pick up Snow & Secrets, grab a blanket to wrap up in and prepare to enjoy a wonderful romance.

Cover art is very much in keeping  with how I pictured the characters.

A Paul B Review: Makepeace (Taking Shield #3) by Anna Butler

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

makepeace-by-anna-butlerA year has passed since Shield Captain Bennet was rescued from Telnos.  Having spent the past year doing his research at the Strategy Unit and teaching at the Thebaid Institute, Bennet is anxious to get back out into space.  However, he must rotate out of Shield for three years and serve in Fleet.  Before that happens, Bennet comes to a realization that the Maess have been using Makepeace, an old Albion colony that was overtaken over a century before.  If his analysis of the information he took from T-18 is correct, the Maess are holding humans as prisoners on the former farming colony.

Having passed his theories along to IntCom, Bennet is assigned to the dreadnought Corvais as their Flight Captain.  Having served onboard for almost eight months, Bennet formulates some chilling possibilities what is happening on the lost colony of Makepeace.  Surmising that the Maess are using the prisoners for scientific experiments, he alerts his superiors of his theories.  When confronted with the possibilities of what is going on, the Albion president authorizes Bennet to rescue the prisoners, with the proviso that if the humans are being in any way controlled by the Maess, he is to not only destroy the base but take out the prisoners as well.  The ultimate decision would be his alone.  The prospect of killing almost 200 “innocents” weighs heavily on Bennet.

Bennet is assigned to the Caliban, a dreadnought whose commander happens to be considered an uncle by Bennet.  Warwick has been friends with his father Caeden since they were in the Military Academy together.  Known for his exploits, Warwick cannot wait to get behind enemy lines like Bennet has been doing all along with Shield.  When Bennet gets on board the Caliban, he finds that Warwick has developed a cult of personality around him to the point the crew almost worships him.  They too are excited to get behind enemy lines and attack instead of defending what territory they have left.  Bennet, having been behind enemy lines, knows that there is no real glory to being there and wonders if the crew is in for a rude awakening when they get to Makepeace.  But Bennet has enough to worry about with the prisoners and the side project that has been given to him.  He hopes this far deep into Maess territory there aren’t any problems…

The third book in the Taking Shield series once again has Bennet in the thick of a military campaign while trying to sort out his feelings not only for his family and lovers but also for the new crew of the Caliban.  He alone really knows the full extent of the mission that he is to undertake and the strain of it puts a stress on his daily living.  Because of this and his usual obliviousness to personal situations, Bennet is both surprised and yet in retrospect not shocked at the actions Warwick undertakes during the battle for Makepeace.  The results of the battle have far reaching effects on Bennet not only militarily but personally as well.  Seeing that one of his theories about the colony having been proved correct, Bennet feels isolated as to the decisions he has to make and a having taken a step away from humanity.  Bennet will have to deal with this when he joins his father on his next assignment on the Gyrfalcon.  I am waiting impatiently for the next book in the series.

The cover art by Wilde City Press once again is well done.  It has what has been described as a Maess form inside the standard Shield badge that has been on the previous covers.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Why I Love Geeks by T.A. Chase

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

why-i-love-geeks-by-ta-chaseNew York City Homicide Detective Chuck Davidson is a guy’s guy. He likes sports, beer, and classic cars—fancy gadgets, not so much. When yet another high-tech phone goes on the fritz, he knows he needs help, and he meets a man who loves technology as much as he hates it—cute but awkward biochemist Herbert Pommerset.

Herb’s never been with a man—not even on a date. He hides behind his research, daydreaming about what it might be like to find someone special. A malfunctioning phone causes his path to cross with a sexy older detective, and Herb wishes he’d spent less time studying science and more learning how to flirt, because he can think of some experiments he’d like to conduct with Chuck. None of his considerable intelligence is helping him express his desires to the other man.

Just when it seems they might overcome their differences, Herb’s research puts him in danger. He’s made a discovery that could cost him his life, and Chuck must use his very different talents to rescue the geek he’s coming to love.

This was a wonderfully sweet story.  Herb and Chuck are both adorable in their own ways.  Herb has never has a date and has a severe case of verbal diarrhea, that can be a bit intrusive and absolutely hilarious.  Chuck is a bit jaded by his life as a homicide detective, but has never had someone who wanted to stay around once they found out how much his job can take him away.

They are both attracted to each other when they initially meet; however they don’t exchange names in their short interaction, but it takes some interference and planning from Chuck’s sister, Jesse, who happens to work with Chuck.  A nice coincidence, don’t you think.  When she gets them face to face again it is impossible to deny their chemistry.  When Chuck’s job brings him to the lab that Herb and Jesse work at he is willing to pull out all the stops to protect them.

Herb is so adorably sweet and continues to just hope that Chuck may want him for more than one night.  He needs a bit of grounding and reassurance, but is willing to jump head first into his first (and hopefully only) relationship.  Chuck has a bit of trouble understanding his immediate feelings for Herb, but doesn’t let that stand in the way of making it work.  They are both so different, but still a bit broken and lonely on the inside that they connect perfectly, maybe a little too perfect at times, but that is okay with me.

Cover art by Anne Cain is wonderful and gives us a great visuals of the characters..

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Laura Lascarso here today to talk about writing, and her latest release Andre in Flight.  Welcome, Laura and thank you for answering some of our questions today.

~

An Interview with Laura Lascarso author of Andre in Flight

  •  Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from?  A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

For me, each book is different. My first novel, about a teen’s struggle with her alcoholic mother, was inspired by Tracy Chapman’s song FAST CAR and some of my own family’s struggles with alcoholism and depression. The second, a Romeo & Juliet with racecars, was born from my mom’s struggle with breast cancer (she survived!). With ANDRE, I was gifted a story from my best friend from high school about an experience she had with an unrequited lover. The one I’m working on now was inspired by a poem. I guess that means I find the world, for better or worse, an inspiring place.

  • Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And why?

I’m a pantzer who aspires to be a planner. I used to completely fly by the seat of my pants, get to about page 80, and realize I didn’t have a plot. Lately, I’ve been using beat sheets to outline my story. Or I’ll write a synopsis of the story before I begin. Knowing the ending is so helpful when crafting a story. That said, if a character speaks to me, I’ll follow them down any rabbit hole. For me, it’s all about the characters. Perhaps to my own misfortune, plot comes second.

  • Contemporary, supernatural, fantasy, or science fiction narratives or something else?  Does any genre draw you more than another when writing it or reading it and why does it do so?

I like reading emotionally complex stories, whether it’s a romance, thriller or fantasy. I suppose I gravitate towards writing the same. I’d like to delve more into speculative fiction because I like the themes you can weave in with those types of stories, whether it’s psychological or spiritual, but I tend to keep my stories pretty realistic and contemporary. I write mostly young and new adult. I like the challenges and discoveries of new adulthood.

  • If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

I don’t think so, not at this time, but I reserve the right to change my mind.

  • Can an author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

I definitely have favorites, some are immediate and some grow on me the more I get to know them. Sometimes a character eludes me and I have to really delve into their lives to understand them better. Revision helps with that. I’d like to write a story where the protagonist becomes the antagonist, like Walter White in BREAKING BAD or Anakin Skywalker in STAR WARS. The reversal of that would be cool too, like Scrooge in A CHRISTMAS CAROL. I really like characters who transform throughout the story. I feel like it’s a much more rewarding experience for readers.

  • If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

I’d probably bring the Bible because there’s a ton of stories in there. And subtext. So much subtext.

  • How early in your life did you begin writing?

My first published work was MARTY, THE MACAW WHO COULDN’T SING when I was in third grade. It travelled around in one of those bus libraries. I’ve always enjoyed living inside imaginary worlds and writing is a way to share them with others.

  • Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

As I alluded to previously, the Bible had a profound impact on me. When I was in fourth grade, my mom, her boyfriend and I lived on a sailboat. My dozen or so Nancy Drew’s and Sweet Valley Highs got old pretty quickly, but the Bible kept my attention. Power, love, vengeance, compassion, forgiveness, violence—so many characters in moral quandaries. I wouldn’t consider myself a religious person necessarily, but I do often go back to Bible stories for inspiration. After that, Edith Hamilton’s MYTHOLOGY: TIMELESS TALES OF GODS AND HEROES. It’s a little more racy than the Bible. One of my favorite picture books was THE MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS BOOK with Grover—so much suspense!

  • What question would you ask yourself here?

I’d ask, what advice do you have for fledgling writers? Keep on trucking. And there are enough critics out there who will tear you down. Don’t do it to yourself. Be your own advocate, artistically and otherwise.

  • If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be?

Great question! My instinct is to say something flippant like YOU’RE DOING THE DISHES TONIGHT but truly, I am blessed to have a partner who loves me unconditionally and is a great comfort when I need it. We’ve been together since we were 21 (15 years), so in a lot of ways, it feels like we’ve grown up together. At the risk of sounding cheesy, I’d name my romance STILL THE ONE.

A MelanieM Review: Murder Between the Pages by Josh Lanyon

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

murder-between-the-pages-by-josh-lanyonFelix Day, author of the Constantine Sphinx mysteries, and Leonard Fuller, author of the Inspector Fez mysteries, are bitter rivals and the best of enemies. Both happen to present when a notorious author of roman à clef is shot by an invisible assailant during a signing at historic Marlborough Bookstore.

Even if they weren’t both suspects, it’s the perfect opportunity to match wits and sleuthing skills.

If only the murderer was equally amused.

Murder Between the Pages by Josh Lanyon combines so many of my  favorites elements.  You have two main characters who happen to write murder mysteries of the type that were popular in the 40’s (and now, they never go  out of style).  They both have incredible past histories, war experiences that have marked them severely enough that neither feels suited to a “typical” return to normal life after the war.  And of course, you have the murder (sometimes murders) mysteries to be investigated and solved by the end of the story.  Romance too, lets not forget.

All wrapped up in a story that involved snappy dialog, beautifully layered characters, and an historical tone and feel that has the post war era all over it.  I loved  it all, from the author hostilities at the book club over their very similiar detectives to the terms used by gay men to signal their sexuality to each other in the 40’s.  Just so well done.

Of course, Josh Lanyon is a favorite author of mine for exactly the same reasons I loved this story.  Its short but doesn’t feel that way.  Its concise and yet at times, I could slow my reading down and admire the language and descriptions of the men and locations.  There’s my regret of a lost character who came and went too soon.  He was so well written even for one so briefly known, full-flavored and believable.

And then there’s the mystery. It comes with just the right amount of angst and flair for the dramatic.

I adore stories like this, can’t get enough of them.  Luckily I have Josh Lanyon who seems to love writing them as much as I love reading them.  Now I can’t wait for the next one to flow off Lanyon’s pen or what have you.

Cover art is superb.  Love it too.

A Paul B Review: Heart Scarab (Taking Shield #2) by Anna Butler

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

heart-scarab-by-anna-butlerIt’s been a year and a year and a half since Bennet returned from T-18.  Eighteen months since he last saw Fleet Lieutenant Flynn.  Things with Joss are just as rocky as ever since his return from that mission.  So Bennet was half relieved when Rosie, his second in command picks up him for his next mission, the evacuation of illegal settlers on the planet Telnos.  The religious sect that settled there believes it is just a government plot to control them.  However, the Maess drones and ships do show up while Bennet and crew are trying to convince one settlement to leave.  Several are killed during the attack, including children, which Bennet sees as a senseless waste of life.  As the Shield team moves the survivors toward the cutter, Bennet is hit in the helmet with a laser blast.  Rosie gets the remaining survivors on board and leaves the planet, unable to retrieve Bennet.

Back on Albion and the Gyrfalcon word spreads of Bennet’s death.  This news hits the family hard, along with Bennet’s partner Joss.  Joss goes into a depression because of the way he has treated his relationship with Bennet over the past nine years.  He regrets the dozens of affairs that he had while Bennet was off on missions.  He makes an ancient sacrifice to the old gods to help guide Bennet’s soul into the afterlife.  Among the pieces he buries is a heart scarab, the symbol of a heart place keeper of a mummy, which Bennet particularly liked.  When the family attends the midnight watch (the equivalent of a memorial service), Rosie suggests to Caeden, Bennet’s father, that they send another mission to rescue whatever survivors were left to honor Bennet.

When his family does not know is that Bennet survived the attack.  He has been living with a group of miners that failed to get off the planet when the Maess attacked.  He and the chief miner Ifan round up what is left of the human population on the planet that they can find and bring them into the mines for safety.  When his comm link buzzes, he realizes that against all normal protocol, Shield has returned and that he will be rescued.  During the rescue however, he suffers a direct laser blast to his knee, once again putting his life in danger.  His family, Joss, Flynn and Rosie must now deal with the consequences of Bennet’s return.

This second book in Anna Butler’s Taking Shield series deals with the emotional and psychological effects of relationships and war.  Bennet is still trying to process his reunion with his father.  Joss, having used different men to deal with the loneliness of Bennet’s absence, finds that they were all pointless.  When he learns of Bennet’s affair with Flynn, the question becomes if it is worse to have several different affairs that mean nothing or one affair that means something.  Flynn is all confused as to why Caeden is so interested in helping him with Bennet.  After all is said and done, it seems no one escapes this drama without some heartache.

The cover art by Wilde City Press has Bennet superimposed inside a Shield badge against a star filled sky.  I think it is very appropriate for the book.

An Ali Audiobook Review: Counterpoint (Song of the Fallen #1) by Rachel Haimowitz and Narrated by Craig Beck

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

counterpoint_audiobook2400It is the twilight of mankind. Depleted by generations of war with a dark race, the human kingdoms and their ancient alliance stand on the brink of extinction. The outlands are soaked with the blood of the fallen. The midlands are rotting with decadence and despair.

Elfkind, estranged by past crimes, watches and waits for nature to run its course.

And then the two collide.

Ayden’s life has long been guided by two emotions: love for his sister, and hatred of all things human. When he’s captured in battle, he must for his sister’s sake swallow his pride and endure slavery in the service of a human prince, Freyrik Farr.

Freyrik’s always known elves to be beautiful and dangerous, but never has one affected him as deeply as Ayden. Can his life of service to his people leave room for this attraction? Dancing on a dagger’s edge between duty and high treason, Freyrik discovers that some choices can change a life, and some an entire world.

Between prejudice, politics, pride, and survival, Ayden and Freyrik must carve a new path, no matter how daunting. For nothing less than the fate of both their peoples rests on the power of their perseverance and their love.

I really enjoyed this story.  I had never read this author before so I had no idea what I was going in to so I was pleasantly surprised and I have a new series and a new author to follow.  There is elaborate world building and the writing was very engaging.  I loved both of the main characters and the complicated situation they find themselves in unfolded seamlessly.  While Ayden enters into the relationship as a slave there is no forced sexual situations (which I was a little nervous about going in to this).  The relationship progresses over time and as trust builds Ayden begins to care for Freyrik.  I love when an enemies to lovers trope takes the time to show how the relationship unfolds and I think the author did a great job with that here.  I could totally belief that they were falling for each other.  It was a slow build and those always pay off so well in the end for me.
There is a warning about violence and there is some, but I didn’t think it was too bad and there wasn’t much of it.  The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger but fortunately the second book is already out so I can move directly on to that.
This story was narrated by Craig Beck.  I don’t think I’ve ever listened to him before but now I’m totally a fan.  I thought he did an excellent job on all of the voices and the story as a whole.  I would definitely recommend this audiobook.
Overall this was a really good story for me.  I would recommend it for fans of the fantasy genre and people who enjoy the enemies to lovers trope.
Cover by Simone’:  I like the cover.  It is an older cover but I still think it fits well with the fantasy concept of the story.

A Paul B Review: Gyrfalcon (Taking Shield #1) by Anna Butler

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

gyrfalcon-by-anna-butlerMany centuries have passed since a part of Earth’s population has settled on the planet Albion.  It has only been just over a century since the war with the Maess started.  While the population of Albion deals with fighting the war, the Maess use drones to do their fighting.  In fact, no one has ever seen someone from Maess.  The creepiest thing about the drones is that as the war continues, the drones begin to look more and more humanoid.

Against this background, Shield Captain Bennett tries to negotiate his life.  As part of the reconnaissance unit of the war effort, his mission is to get in behind enemy lines, find information about the enemy and if possible, destroy outposts to cripple the enemy’s operation.  Not bad for an academic whose family has had a long line of military service.  But the fact he is not in active duty in the military and the fact that Bennett is gay and in a relationship with a man almost twice his age has caused a rift with his father.   Add in that his partner for the last seven years is tired of Bennett going off on dangerous missions and not satisfied with his academic position makes life tense for Bennett.

Called in from his break after his last assignment, Bennett must once again go behind enemy lines.  When his own starship gets called to replace a damaged vessel, Bennett is transferred to the dreadnaught Gyrfalcon.  Not only is the dreadnaught probably the wrong type of ship for his mission, its commanding officer is none other than his father.  His hope is to keep things civil until the end of the mission.  Then there is flight Lieutenant Flynn who captures Bennett’s attention.  Flynn is not only cocky, but has the flight skills to back it up.  A love them and leave them type guy, Flynn sets out to make the Shield captain his next conquest.  That is if this mission doesn’t get them both killed first.

The world Anna Butler has created is both simple and complex at the same time.  Set several centuries into the future, Albion is made of Earth refugees.  The governmental order has ten national governments and one planetary government.  There is a pantheon of gods that are worshipped but they are not discussed in detail.  What was meant as a simple expression of friendship was taken as an act of war by the drones of the Maess.  Then there is the life of Bennett.  His home life is screwed up in all different ways.  He would like nothing more than do research but knows he needs to contribute to the war effort, even though it’s not the type of help his father expects of him.  He has been with his partner Joss for seven years but he begins to have feelings for Flynn that he hasn’t had for Joss in a long time.  This is a great start to this series.
