In Memoriam – Paul Berg

In Memoriam – Paul Berg

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words lost one of its wonderful reviewers recently.  Paul Berg died suddenly during one of his beloved backgammon tournaments, a game he was passionate about.  I’d like to think his love of LGBTQIA Science Fiction kept him occupied between tournaments and visa versa!  He was always talking about the next books he was reading or the next topic for his Paul’s Paranormal Portfolio blog he wrote for us.  His excitement was contagious!  It didn’t matter what genre the characters and stories he was reading were from…he just loved all the books and their couples (from the supernatural shifters to the alien ones) to the paranormal to fantasy to the science fiction..Paul loved them all so.

And he wanted to share his love of those stories with all of you.

Paul did that through his reviews and through his blog, Paul’s Paranormal Portfolio, where he shared his love of all the characters and formats that came his way.  He had discussed with me expanding it in the future to include the serial stories he loved reading and some graphic novels.  I’ll miss those too.

But Paul left so much of him behind in the joy, swift intelligence, and gift of himself that he shared with others.  Whether it was through his reviews of books or his presence and fierce competition at the backgammon tables or as a great friend and family member, Paul Berg made an impact in this world.  He will be deeply missed.

A Loss in the Family and This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

A Loss At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words has lost one of its wonderful reviewers.  Paul Berg, known through his reviews here as Paul B, died suddenly in  late March, leaving a void for us, his many other friends everywhere and especially his grieving family.

Paul was one of the reviewers that had been with Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words almost from the beginning, he and I laughingly “fighting” over our love of the same science fiction stories and wolf shifters.  When Kendall McKenna’s series popped up and we both began to read it, yep, the emails flew between us as we compared notes on characters and stories (not the first author or series we did this with).  Our thoughts were almost always on the same wavelength.

When I thought that he might want to write a blog for STRW, he already had one that he had been meaning to suggest.  That blog became Paul’s Paranormal Portfolio, a column he intended to enlarge in the coming months to include graphic novels and serial stories.  I can’t begin to tell you how saddened I am that he will never share his excitement for those formats and the LGBTQIA science fiction/fantasy/supernatural stories they represent with everyone, myself included.

Beside his love of books, Paul loved Backgammon and he was great at it.  When he wasn’t writing  or reading, he was playing (“yes, Melanie, I’m writing that review right now at the tournament”).  He died at a tournament playing a game he loved.

I have included more information about Paul today on a separate post.  His backgammon team, Flint Area Backgammon Club, has a Go Fund Me link to help pay for the rest of his funeral costs which were larger than expected.  Any assistance will be appreciated.

I will be running one of Paul’s Paranormal Portfolios today.  I’m still so shocked and saddened.  Paul leaves a void here at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words, in the LGBTQIA book review community and everywhere that cannot be filled.  How I will miss him.

A Stella Review: Forged in Trust (Bay Area Professionals #4) by Mickie B. Ashling

RATING 2 out of 5 stars

Dr. Ethan Marshall is the young medical student on call the night Tessa Duran murders her husband for abusing her twelve-year-old-son, Rino. Ethan stays in the cubicle while the rape kit is performed and is surprised when the boy resorts to prayers instead of tears.

Despite compelling evidence, Tessa is sent to jail for life. To avoid placing Rino in foster care, their parish priest agrees to raise him. Ethan is touched by Rino’s plight and visits whenever possible, but the connection is broken when the priest and young boy leave the area months later.

Raised by the Dominicans in California, Rino considers joining the order until a romance blossoms with a fellow student. After much soul-searching, he turns his back on everything familiar, and chooses his orientation over his perceived vocation. Upon graduating dental hygiene school, Rino takes a job at the office of Scott Gregory and Robin Kennedy.

Seventeen years have passed since that horrible night in the emergency room. Forty-three-year-old Ethan is now a Dominant in search of a full-time submissive. Twenty-nine-year-old Rino is adrift, longing for someone or something to help him find the serenity he’s lost along the way. As they rekindle their friendship, they realize they might be perfect for each other.

Forged in Trust by Mickie B Ashling was a huge disappointment, although it could have been a great success because it has all the things I need in my books: damaged character, age gap, BDSM, characters with different backgrounds, wealthy MC.

This novel is part of the Bay Area Professionals series but it works perfectly as a standalone, especially because the secondary characters (MCs in the previous books) take a lot of space, so you could have not read their own story and still easily understand them (I will talk more about this in a bit). Moreover halfway through the book I realized I had actually read the first book, Impacted, when I began to be obsessed with the mm world. And I remember I quite loved it. Probably my tastes changed in time and that’s why I surely will read it in the next future.

Back to Forged in Trust, one thing I liked was there was an initial part where I met Rino when he was a baby, the author showed me where he came from, what he went through and who he became. I understood the baggage he has on his shoulders.

And then a row of details I hated began.

First of all I didn’t like the writing, I can’t even explain why, it just wasn’t for me, it made my reading hard and discontinuous. I often had to reread the same sentences, maybe it was just that I wasn’t into the story at all, I don’t know.

Then religion plays an important role  and I don’t want to go into details, but I deeply despised a couple of things the author decided to speak of, and I’m saying this as a non churchgoer. They still disturbed me.

An important role is played by Robin and Scott from book #1. While I’m happy when I get to meet again the MCs I loved in the previous books of a series, here in Forged in Trust I met them too much. They were not part of the story as second characters, they had their own chapters (see the plural), long scenes I was no interested in reading, they already had their own space in another book, why I need to find their sex scenes here? Probably they were there to make up for the BDSM tag.

At the end everyone has important roles here, except for Rino and Ethan. And that made Forged in Trust barely a two stars read to me.

The cover art by Catt Ford is well done and lovely. I like it a lot.

✒︎

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Jackie Keswick here today talking about writing, characters and her latest release Leap of Faith (FireWorks Security #1).  Welcome, Jackie!

✒︎

Thank you very much for hosting me on the blog today. And thanks also for some very intriguing questions… It’s so easy to run out of words or struggle for topics when preparing a blog tour, so I appreciate the prompts. A lot.

How much of yourself goes into a character?

There’s always a bit of me in there somewhere. Anything from little mannerisms to things I need to get out of my system. Most often, I share things I love with my characters. Away from fiction I blog about England, English history and food, so every so often a character inherits a part of that. Gareth Flynn in the Power of Zero stories is an awesome cook, as is rock god Tempest, who cooks when he’s too tired and wired to sleep. Strangely enough, none of the characters in Leap of Faith are any great shakes in the kitchen – Kieran can make toast and pour cereal and Joel doesn’t mind much what he eats as long as there’s sugar involved – but I’m thinking of making up for that in the sequel, where I don’t have just one but two characters who bond over stuff that’s served on plates.

Does research play a role in choosing which genre you write?  Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

I like both, researching and making stuff up. It depends very much on the plot bunny or on what I’ve been reading. For Leap of Faith, which for some reason ended up in Connecticut where I’ve never been, I was scouring maps, Google Earth, and local history. Lissand, the city where FireWorks Security has its HQ, is entirely fictional. It’s a construct of various bits of geography along the Connecticut coast, re-jigged to fit the story I wanted to tell.

Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

I have to say yes to this, even though it’s not obvious when you look at the stories I have published so far. For me, reading and writing was always an escape. When I was younger I didn’t like reading anything contemporary. I had my nose buried in either historical novels or sci-fi and fantasy. And ever since I could hold a pen that’s what I’ve written. My first “novel” was a story set in England at the time of the Norman Conquest and I’ve written too many space operas to count. I still love to write medieval-ish fantasy. In fact, I have one on my desk right now which is close to being done.

Have you ever had to put an ‘in progress’ story aside because of the emotional ties with it?  You were hurting with the characters or didn’t know how to proceed?

Both. Jack’s story has a lot of sharp hooks. I knew the story needed telling, but I had to grow up and grow out of a lot of stuff before I could do that successfully. Even then, I still had nightmares writing Job Hunt. And Leap of Faith lay around half done for three years because I had too much fun with making Kieran and Joel jump through hoops until I’d written myself into a corner and had no idea how to unravel the mess I’d made. It took a question from my husband for me to realise that it wasn’t Kieran, but Marius who had the key to the story. And then, predictably, the whole thing went off the rails…

Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

I prefer HFN. HEA means the story is done and if I’ve loved what I’ve read, it’s now time for the book hangover. In real life, I think that falling in love and deciding it’s real is the easy part. Living together and making it work is harder, which is probably why I absolutely adore series where I follow the same characters for book after book until they’re secure with each other.

Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

Romance as a genre has never really been my thing. Not as a teen and not later. I didn’t discover Georgette Heyer’s books until I was in my forties… but then I acquired all of them in very short order because I love the history and her characterisation just left me in stitches. I do like a good, gripping love story with twists and bumps, multiple plots, and a lot of character development. But it doesn’t have to be a romance in the strict sense and it doesn’t have to end happily.

Who do you think is your major influence as a writer?  Now and growing up?

Leaning a bit on the previous question, one of my favourite love stories of all time is The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin. I can read that one backwards, forwards and sideways and quote it, too. That book taught me not to take things at face value and that a love story doesn’t need a happy ending to be consuming. My other favourite growing up was German author Johannes Tralow. My two go-to books were Irene of Trapezunt and The Eunuch. Both with very strong female leads and wonderful, unconventional love stories.

I like both Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett for their use of language, and Desmond Bagley for the way he created action plots based on science. More recently, I’ve fallen in love with Patricia Correll’s Late Summer, Early Spring. It’s very sensual without being obvious, but it still tugs on your heartstrings.

How do you choose your covers?  (curious on my part)

With great difficulty. I find it tricky to describe the vibe of a book so the designer can do their magic. I write suspense and mystery, so a really romantic cover doesn’t usually work for me. For Leap of Faith, the cover designer was Garrett Leigh, and she’s done an outstanding job. It’s the first time that I have men on my cover 🙂 and she actually found Kieran for me… I love how that turned out.

Do you have a favorite among your own stories?  And why?

I tend to fall in love with the story I write, and because I like to experiment with different styles and genres I enjoy different things in each story. Writing Leap of Faith was outsize fun. I was trying for almost non-stop action and I got so buried in the story at times that I was literally out of breath. At the moment, Mouse Hunt (another Jack & Gareth) is one that chokes me up when I read it over.

What’s next for you as an author?

I want to write Jack’s story to the end, so there’s closure for me as well as a proper HEA for Jack and Gareth. That will take a while. Writing Jack is getting easier, but it still takes a lot out of me emotionally, so one thing I’ve learned is that I need a break every so often, to regroup and write something else. Leap of Faith was the result of one of those breaks, and my next challenge will be the sequel, Burned Once, which is about halfway there. I also have a paranormal series on my WiP stack that won’t leave me alone. I’ve never written anything paranormal before, so I’m rather excited about that one. And I’m about to try my hand at self-publishing later this year….

Blurb

Close friends and partners at FireWorks Security, Joel Weston and Kieran Ross know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. They have each other’s backs, make a formidable team, and carefully ignore their volatile chemistry.

When Kieran struggles with the aftermath of an assignment gone wrong, Joel is there to help. When Joel is caught in an explosion, Kieran jumps into a burning marina to rescue the man who means so much to him. But they never discuss what’s closest to their hearts, not prepared to risk their friendship for the mere possibility of something more.

Faced with bombs, assassins, and old ghosts, Joel and Kieran must find out why they’re targets, who is coming after them, and—most of all—how each would feel if he lost the other. Should they continue as best friends, or is it time to take a leap of faith?

Forgiveness is a hard thing to give and sometimes even harder to receive.

Capture The Sun (Book #5)

Model, Isaac Bailey wants to break into the world of fashion design. Under his father’s company name, he is set to debut his new collection—summer wear. He has the models, the clothes, what he needs is a location. Mitch Stone is a trouble shooter. His latest client needs an exotic location and he happens to know someone with the very thing—Sapphire Cay.

Having underestimated Isaac as nothing more than an airhead model, Mitch soon discovers there is much more to the young man than he first thought. As the fashion shoot gets underway, Mitch has to contend with his feelings for his old love, Dylan, and the very new and growing affections he has for Isaac.

What starts as just another job, turns out to be more fruitful and exhilarating than winning any multi-million dollar contract.

Forever In The Sun (Book #6)

Feuding families, unearthed secrets, and a violent storm threatens the Cay. Will the idyllic island with her cast of characters make it through unscathed? It’s time for the circle to close on the story of Sapphire Cay, and on the men who have lived and found love on her beaches.

Connor and Shaun are directly related to Peter and Alfie, a couple whose clandestine lover affair was overshadowed by old prejudices and a world war. Shaun Jamieson is a writer, a romantic and needs to pen the story of the affair’s final secrets; Connor French’s family wants to stop Shaun.

When the two men step onto the sands of Sapphire Cay, they find more than just the secrets of an old love. They find hope and comfort in each other. But with the past hanging over them, can they ever have what Peter and Alfie could not? Or are they just as ill-fated as their ancestors?

Tom Carter

Kicked out at fifteen for being gay, Tom survived by selling his body on the streets. Four years later, Tom, now nineteen, doesn’t know how long he can continue living this life.
One night while out working, Tom sees a face from his past, one he had long forgotten. One he had used to fantasise about.
Sebastian Banks
Afraid of the reaction he will receive, Tom runs away hoping never to see him again. But Seb had other ideas.

Seb Banks
At twenty-five, Seb’s life is going exactly the way he had wanted. Having worked hard at University, Seb has been offered a permanent contract at a local solicitor.
While driving to a friend’s house to celebrate, Seb is shocked to find Tom, someone he hasn’t seen in years, on the streets, selling himself.
Feeling an overwhelming need to help Tom, Seb tracks him down and offers him a way out.
Is Tom willing to take a chance on Seb and accept his offer, or will his distrust of everyone from his past cause him to push Seb away?

Seb pushed away from the counter and turned, bumping into Tom, not realising he had followed him. He stared into Tom’s blue eyes and watched as the pupils dilated. Tom licked his lips, and Seb copied the action. His nostrils flared as he caught Tom’s scent and he hardened in his jeans. He hadn’t been this close to him other than when he’d been fixing his cut eye, and he suddenly had the overwhelming urge to kiss him. Seb looked down at Tom’s lips and watched as they parted.

He reached a hand up and gently touched Tom’s cheek, feeling the stubble on his jaw. Leaning forward, he paused, waiting for Tom to push him away or to speak and when he didn’t, he touched his lips to Tom’s and felt him inhale sharply. Nothing happened for a second, and then Tom hesitantly kissed him back, just a meeting of lips, a series of small kisses before they both pulled away, looking at each other.

He stepped back and looked at Tom, noting the stunned expression on his face, and he quickly apologised. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that.” He cleared his throat. “I’ll put some clean clothes in the bedroom for you to use. See you in the morning.”

He rushed upstairs to his room and shut the door, leaning back and banging his head against it. God, what a fucking idiot. Why the fuck had he done that? Now he’s going to think the only reason I let him stay is for sex. Groaning, he threw himself on his bed and glared at the ceiling.

Megs Pritchard lives in England and is a mother to two small boys. When she isn’t working or being mummy, she is busy writing about complex characters that know the harsh realities of life but want a HEA.

A lover of M/M and M/F romances she believes everyone deserves to be happy, healthy and loved.

Growing up in a military family, Megs has traveled Europe and has a great deal of respect and gratitude for all the men and women who have and who still serve. Her dream job was to be a Bomb Disposal Expert and even had her own ‘kit’ when she was younger.

She is currently working on her first full length series called Second Chances.

Everything is good – no, great – aside from the distance issue, until a surprise from Lila’s past crops up and moves in with her. Can Mario be the family man that Lila needs, or is this one game the old vet is unable to skate in?

NSFW Excerpt

“Every time I see you in my bed, I have to wonder what I did to get so lucky.”

Her hand wiggled between my legs, her warm fingers cupping my balls then squeezing. My legs spread for her of their own accord. The ice pack fell off my lower back. I figured she might pick it up and fuss, and I was right.

“I can’t imagine anyone thinking that having a washed-up hockey player in a kilt rolling around on their fancy pillows is lucky.”

My cock was pinned between my stomach and the bed. She began working on the muscles up by my shoulders after placing the ice pack back where it belonged.

“It takes a special man to come back to my bed,” she said while her strong fingers dug deeply into my flesh. It felt fantastic. “Most come once, pun fully intended, and then they leave, curiosity abated, never to be heard from again.”

I rolled onto my back to look at her. Her eyes widened slightly.

“Okay, that is total bullshit. Any man should be dropping to his knees and thanking God Almighty for a woman like you.”

“And I love that you think so.” Her gaze was tender for a moment, then it flittered from my banged-up face to my cock. The tip of her pink tongue moved over her lower lip, her eyes growing smoky and sensual. “I wish you’d keep ice on that nasty.”

“I’ll be fine. I’ve had much worse, trust me. Why don’t you lose that nightgown and shawl and plant that sexy ass right here?” I patted my thighs.

She struck a thoughtful pose, her long yellow fingernail tapping her chin, her red lips pursed. I wanted to roll her onto her back and laugh all at once.

“Come on, baby. I drove all the way from Cayuga for some sweetness.”

Her gaze flickered to me right before she reached up to push her hair from her face theatrically.

“That’s true.”

With that pronouncement, she stood. The shawl shimmied from her shoulders to the floor. I grabbed my cock and ran my thumb over the weeping head. A shudder ran through me. She stood with her back to me.

“You sure you’re up to this, Seamus?” she asked with a coy peek over her broad shoulder.

I tugged on my hard dick in reply.

“You do have a way with words,” she sighed humorously.

“You want a redhead with flapping gums, hook up with Kalinski.”

“If he and Daniel weren’t wed, I’d do so, and happily,” she teased, pushing one thin strap off her shoulder.

“Over my dead body,” I snarled, just as she wanted.

The other strap shimmied down her arm. I gave my dick another tug, my gaze locked on her as she wiggled free of her nightgown, slowly revealing her bare body.

“Fuck,” I moaned when she turned to face me, arms over her head in a pose aimed to titillate.

It worked. Oh man, how it worked. She was stunningly beautiful and as sexy as a fucking pagan goddess. I ached to get my hands on her, but I knew she had a wee bit more prancing to do.

But now almost thirty, Woody’s once close relationship with Rafe has dissolved into awkward silences and unvoiced hurts made worse by Rafe’s alcoholism. Will their relationship mend or will the feelings they have for one another remain silent forever?

I liked the story. It was a short and steamy read. It is written in a very engaging manner. The build-up to the story is very precise and makes for a solid foundation for the story to rest on. The beginning of the story really hooks you in such a way that you won’t pause till you have reached the last page.

There is a lot of depth to the characters of this story and all of them made this story even more interesting. In a way reading these characters felt like revisiting someone you already knew instead of being introduced to a stranger for the first time.

Personally for me the only hitch in the story is the power dynamics, there is a definite D/s element to Rafe and Woody’s relationship even though it is not verbalized and mostly unacknowledged. Now this was the one part of the story that just hit me sideways, there was no foreshadowing to this aspect of the story, so when it was introduced I was a little off-kilter. I felt like the author deliberately avoided talking about Woody’s feelings for Rafe as a child for some reason, but considering what their relationship is developing into, I find myself very curious as to how Woody realized these aspects of his sexuality. But the off-kilter feeling only lasted so long because the sex scenes in this short were mind-blowingly hot.

Overall this was an amazing read.

Cover Art by Written Ink Designs. The cover for this story is unapologetically hot and I may have had a case of judging a book by its cover but it was totally worth it. Amazing Cover. Amazing Story.

A Free Dreamer Review: Don’t Feed the Trolls by Erica Kudisch

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Gaming while female is enough to incur the wrath of the dude-bros, and they’ve come for me. Instead of fighting back, I’ve created an alternate account. Male name, male pronouns. And I’ve met this girl. I’ve always liked girls, and Laura’s adorable and smart and never gives up, and she likes me back. Or rather, she likes the man I’m pretending to be. But I can’t tell her I’m a woman without the mob coming after her too.
And besides: I might not be a woman, not really.
The truth is, I don’t know what I am anymore. I’ve spent my whole life being told how I’m supposed to act and what I’m supposed to be, but none of it feels right. And my lie is starting to feel truer than anything I’ve ever been.
There’s a convention coming up, but the closer it gets, the more I have to choose: lie or fight. But if I don’t stand my ground as a girl, am I letting the haters win?
Then again, those aren’t the only two ways to live.
Being a female gamer myself, I was immediately drawn to this book. Personally, I’ve never experienced discrimination in the gaming world because of my gender. But then I’ve never played MMORPGs like Daphne does (way too complicated for me – I’m a very casual gamer) and I tend to play male characters, given the choice.
If you haven’t guessed from the blurb and my opening: This book is full of gamers. MMORPGs play a major role throughout the story. Having never played games like that myself, some of the typical slang took some getting used to at first. I think it takes a gaming nerd to appreciate the work the author put into creating a realistic gaming world online as well as offline. That was absolutely brilliantly done and felt very realistic.
I loved how diversive this book was. There are so many gender identities, sexual orientations and ethnicities and it’s all portrayed as perfectly normal. Every supporting character had a distinctive and unique voice and I loved every one of them. The musketqueers, Daphnis’ roommates and best friends, will forever have a place in my heart. Their friendship and support was truly unconditional . It was easy to really feel their friendship. Those guys are the kind of friends anybody would love to have.
It was interesting to watch Daphnis’ struggle with their gender in comparison to their roommate Alain, who wasn’t cis either. But for Alain the whole gender identity was rather simple: “Ivy and she when I’m tucked, Alain and he when I’m not.” It seemed downright effortless compared to how much trouble Daphnis has with their gender identity. Certainly a very interesting contrast. While I know my way around the gaming community, I don’t know anything about what it feels like to question your gender identity. So while this seemed quite realistic as well, I can’t guarantee it actually is.
There are some minor things I wasn’t entirely happy about, however. First of all, I would have liked a little more depth overall. Be it Daphne starting to think about her gender identity or the love story, a little more detail would have been nice. As it was, the romance part of the story felt a little bit rushed. And I wasn’t entirely happy about the ending. The HEA just seemed a little too happy for me.
Overall, I absolutely loved “Don’t Feed the Trolls”. It’s a breath of fresh air. Just don’t expect an epic love story and focus more on the other parts.
“Don’t Feed the Trolls” made me think. About gaming, sexism, gender and all things related. Not many books manage that. It hit very close to home and I think I’ll view the gaming world differently from now on.
The cover by L.C. Chase is pretty cool. It definitely works for the story.

A Stella Review: Renaissance (Village Love #2) by Lillian Francis

RATING 4,5 out of 5 stars

Smudge really needs to get laid, if only to stop himself wondering about the softness of Raleigh’s curls and why he keeps running away.

After his tumultuous teenage years, Smudge has settled into his quiet life in the sleepy English village of Slopy Bottom. He’s his own boss with the time and space to indulge his artistic creativity. And he has friends. He’s happy. Satisfied. Lonely. And the pool of potential soulmates is almost non-existent. His friends, Rick and Mal, flush with their own happy romance, keep trying to set him up with the most incompatible men, and he’s never finding true love on Grindr. Hell, he’s not even going to manage a hook up based on the kinky messages he’s been getting recently. He’ll just have to slake his desire to find his own HEA in the pages of bosom-heaving romance novels.

Raleigh is the darling of Slopy Bottom’s blue rinse brigade: church organist, mobile librarian, and apparently wedded to his trademark cardigans. He seems to be the polar opposite of the artistic Smudge, whose brightly coloured mohawk and piercings should be a red flag to Raleigh. Yet he’s yearning for company too. It’s just that Raleigh has less expectation and definitely less courage to chase after it, for reasons that he keeps very close to his chest. Reasons that don’t stop him from being drawn irresistibly to Smudge.

Smudge is sure that the way Raleigh runs from him whenever he sees him is cruelly deliberate. A reflection on his bad boy looks and his disdain for Raleigh’s precious church. So why can’t he stop thinking about the softness of Raleigh’s curls and his delicate body? Then Raleigh offers an olive branch of sugar and caffeine, Smudge’s favourite combination, starting them on a road to an awkward truce. And when they are conned into working together on a community project at the local hospital, the proximity ignites a spark that can’t be ignored. But navigating the murky waters that could take their relationship beyond tentative friendship all depends on whether Raleigh can release his secret fears – and whether Smudge is the man to share and allay them.

Renaissance by Lillian Francis was a pure joy to read. I was waiting for Raleigh and Smudge’s story since I first met them in the previous book in the Village Love series. I am very happy the author quickly fulfilled my wish. I loved this new release so much.

This is an “opposites attract” story, Raleigh is the perfect and so beloved librarian of Sloppy Bottom, Smudge is the strange owner of a print shop, full of tattoos, piercings and colorful hair. When these two world will be brought together, something special will happen. I loved them because I love my characters to be damaged like we all are, it makes them real, although I could have saved Raleigh from the deep pain of his past.

The relationship was slow at start and developed, Raleigh and Smudge are really together just at the very end of the novel, plus there is no sex scenes and it was perfect. Imo it shouldn’t have been different and I want to thank the author for the respect she showed to Raleigh with this choice.

The writing was so engaging, it made the reading easy to follow and I particularly enjoyed it in the descriptive scenes. With her style Lillian brought me to Sloppy Bottom and its people and it was a great place.

In Renaissance I found Rick and Mal from Resonance and Resistance, I saw how happy they still were together, how their relationship has grown and become more solid. And then I met some characters I so want and hope the author will give them their own HEA, like Adam and Trevor and Jason and PuondingTorque. I’m so curious to see what she can come up with.

I feel to highly recommend Renaissance by Lillian Francis, one of the best book I read in 2017.

The cover art by Garrett Leigh follows the style of the covers of the series and I quite like it since it’s different.
