William Harris is a reserved man, private and guarded. He has no one to go home to. He’s never found a man worth sticking around for. He’s never been in love. And he’s convinced he’s happy with his lone-wolf life.

Nate Kelly is William’s opposite, social and easy going. He comes into William’s life as the elegant geisha Momo. When William realizes Momo is a man in drag, he’s captivated.

From their first date, William’s world changes. Nate is nothing like his usual type. And William soon finds out being with this carefree man means always being on display and attracting attention, which makes him want to retreat. He tries to keep Nate at arm’s length, but it’s no use. Nate’s transformed his life in a matter of months and keeps drawing him back in.

If they stand a chance, William has to be comfortable standing next to someone so at home in the limelight. Their future together and William’s happiness depend on it. Is Nate the man finally worth giving up William’s solitary existence? Is he worth sticking around for?

*Extensively reworked from the short story, The Measure of a Man.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Kris Ripper here today to talk about zir latest story, As La Vista Turns.  Welcome, Kris!

✒︎

Hi, I’m Kris and welcome to the blog tour for As La Vista Turns, book five in my awesome queer soap opera! Enjoy the blog tour!

About As La Vista Turns

Zane Jaffe has almost lost track of what conception cycle she’s in. (That’s a lie: this is cycle thirteen.) She’s fake-dating her pal Mildred to get her best friend off her back, but judging by how hot it was when they accidentally kissed, her feelings might be somewhat less platonic than she’d thought.

And she’s decided that healing the fractured local queer community can only be accomplished through a party. Or maybe it’s actually a wake. Whatever it is, it’ll take place at Club Fred’s, and there will be alcohol.

Trying to conceive is an unholy rollercoaster of emotions, and Mildred won’t let them kiss again until Zane figures out how she feels. Between the wake (exhausting as hell, and that’s just the fun stuff), the constant up-down cycle of trying to get pregnant, and saving the world in the meantime, Zane has no idea. Fall in love with Mildred isn’t on her list, but maybe it’s time to let go of that rigid future she’s been working toward, and instead embrace the accidents that can lead to something better.

As La Vista Turns is available from Riptide Publishing.

This title is part of the Queers of La Vista universe.

A Stella Release Day Review: Until You (At First Sight #3) by T.J. Klune

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

until-you-by-tj-kluneSequel to The Queen & the Homo Jock King

Together with their families and friends

Paul Auster

and

Vincent Taylor

request the honor of your company at the celebration of their marriage.

Until You by TJ Klune is the HEA all the fans of Vince and Paul deserved. Maybe we fans deserved it more than the MCs for all the shit we had to read in the previous books (Just joking!).

I can always count on TJ and his writing, I can’t explain how much I laughed reading this new release, how many times I rolled my eyes at Paul and Sandy, how much I wanted to be part of that crazy family of blood related and not people.

This new installment was exactly what I was expecting, crazy and funny and stupid, just perfect and always over the top. It’s what I want from the At First Sight series.  I was so happy to have the chance to revisit these favorite persons of mine, not just Paul and Vince, but all the other characters too, I saw a little more of the homo jock king heart and I fell in love again with Corey. I so hope TJ will give me more.

I enjoyed and deeply loved each chapter, each full of not just laughs, but full of what truly conquered me, the positiveness and the emotions, had the book not been so funny, I surely would have cried as a baby, because the love was not only in the air, the love was everywhere and the characters’ hearts were full of it. It warmed my soul and left me with a smile on my face.

I don’t want to spoil the story telling little details, but I want to highly recommend the whole series and if you are missing just Until You, run to buy it right now and read it soon. It’s a winner.

The cover art by Reese Dante is awesome, I like this artist style a lot and this is no exception, especially for the cake topping, too cute.

Series At First Sight #3

An Alisa Audiobook Review: Romancing the Wrong Twin by Clare London and Rusty Topsfield (Narrator)

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

romancing-the-wrong-twin-audioHow tangled can a romantic web get?

When gruff mountaineer Dominic Hartington-George seeks sponsorship for his latest expedition, his London PA insists on a more media-friendly profile—like dating celebrity supermodel Zeb Z.

Zeb can’t make the date, so he asks his identical twin, Aidan, to stand in for just one evening. Aidan, a struggling playwright, shuns the limelight to the extent people don’t even know Zeb has a sibling, but he reluctantly agrees.

When the deception has to continue beyond the first date, Aidan fights to keep up the pretense. Dominic likes his sassy, intelligent companion, and Aidan starts falling for the forthright explorer. But how long can Aidan’s conscience cope as confusion abounds? Will coming clean as “the other twin” destroy the trust they’ve built?

So… I had a hard time with this story.  I thought the concept was interesting, but had trouble with some of the execution.  Dominic is forced into a PR relationship to help him get a sponsorship deal and Aiden stands in for his supermodel brother when Zeb can’t make it.

I understood both Dominic’s and Aiden’s points of view in the story, but had a hard time connecting with the characters.  Throughout the story it just seemed that they would both internally whine about their situations or the people around them and to me it made them quite off putting.  While we see them both jump into a physical relationship without much talk about the future and feelings, I can understand their feelings being hurt through misunderstanding, but didn’t really feel the characters emotions.

Rusty Topsfield did a nice job narrating this story.  I was able to keep track of the story and characters which is always nice.  I didn’t like some of the voices he had for characters and a few secondary ones seemed quite similar, but the whiny quality of some of the voices he used along with the whininess of the characters didn’t help.

Cover art by Bree Archer is nice and follows the pattern for the series.

✒︎Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Lynn Charles Interview✒︎

Today Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is very lucky to be interviewing Lynn Charles author of Beneath the StarsHi Lynn, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

I’m happy to be here! I’m an author, wife and mother living in Central Ohio. I’ve been writing—from lavish journal entries to fictional stories—most of my life. My novels, Chef’s Table and Black Dust were published with Interlude Press in 2014 and 2016. Beneath the Stars is about man at a major turning point in his career who gets called home to help take care of his elderly father. While there he meets someone, and together, they learn how to define happiness, home and family.

  • What genres do you enjoy writing in?

Contemporary romance has always been where my mind takes me when I’m writing. Interestingly enough, while I enjoy reading the same genre, my favorite reads are typically memoirs. But, I suppose there is an interconnectedness in that I like the real and relatable bits of contemporary romance the most of all. Sure, the fantastical is great—be in incredible careers or perfect bodies, the promise of happy endings and deep seeded contentment—but the bits where I can recognize the humanity in the midst of the fantastical appeals to me.

  • What was the hardest part about writing this book?

Getting the layers of my main character, Sid, out there without pages of info dump. He has a rich background and a complicated present. I over did it, then under did it and threw my hands up in the air a few times with it all. But, I pressed on and Sid will hopefully be a beloved character—he is to me anyway.

  • What did you enjoy most about writing your book?

The one-on-one relationships, even beyond the romantic relationship of Sid and Eddie. I loved moments with Sid and his father. Sid and Eddie’s son, Adrian. Adrian and his dad, Eddie, were painful and rewarding as an author. Sid and his sister have a complicated relationship, and exploring that was a joy.

  • What cultural value do you see in writing?

The same I see in all of the arts: it broadens not only the viewpoint of the author (or it should), but also the reader. It takes you to worlds you would have never explored on your own, or deepens your understanding of the worlds you have explored. The saying, “Write what you know,” is such a disservice for the author, when there is so much out there we don’t know, and even more we can learn from the places in life that we’re comfortable.

  • What is your favorite positive saying?

My favorite saying in general is, “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should,” but I’m not sure that’s anything more than a neutral/kind way of considering decisions. I’d probably choose the Dalai Lama quote I use for the signature on my personal email account: Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. It’s not one I always remember, but I certainly try.

BENEATH THE STARS ~ SUMMARY

Sid Marneaux puts his fashion career on the line when he returns home to care for his ailing father. When he meets the new fire chief Eddie Garner, their romance sparks hot, but Eddie harbors burdens of his own. Through the wisdom of a child and the connection of mothers-now-gone, the men redefine family, career, and most importantly, love.

* * *

Excerpt from Beneath the Stars

Happiness doesn’t always come easily; sometimes you have to work for it.

* * *

“How is he doing?”

Sid began with a prepared answer, the one he used for old neighbors and family acquaintances. “He’s doing okay. Day to day, you know,” but when he stopped fidgeting with his food and looked into Eddie’s eyes, his breath caught in his throat. Eddie wasn’t making small talk, wasn’t being generically kind. He was tuned in, with an understanding and patience at peeling away the complicated layers of caring for an elderly parent that went beyond what Sid had felt from anyone—even his closest friends.

And so, with Eddie’s unrushed attention, Sid began to unpack the emotions and frustrations he hadn’t yet allowed himself to express. He talked about Anna’s overbearing control and her lack of understanding as to why that would make Lou lash out and became belligerent. He talked about Anna’s calendars and charts and the daily schedule she kept Lou on. About her refusal to let their dad do much of anything. “It’s like she’s already put him in the ground,” he finally said, feeling almost winded after exposing so much of himself, of his family.

“It’s hard on the caretakers,” Eddie said. “It completely takes over your life.”

“It’s hard on the patient too. Dad lived, you know? Just last year, he rode his bike five miles to the park and back almost every day. This is the man who threw on a backpack with a bunch of college buddies and hiked the fucking Hippie Trail. He didn’t stop until he found what he was looking for. He doesn’t stop. And now he has no choice.”

“What was he looking for?”

Sid grinned with memories of his mom and dad and their great love. “He didn’t know until he saw her.”

Eddie met his smile, and a blush crept up his neck. “Sometimes we don’t know what we’re looking for until it’s sitting across the table from us.”

“No,” Sid said, unable to pull his gaze away from Eddie. “We don’t.”

BENEATH THE STARS will be published by Interlude Press on February 16, 2017.

Twenty Questions with Detective Peter Tao, from Hacked Up

(from Ethan Stone: I’ve done twenty questions with me  but today I’m going to do it with Detective Peter Tao, the main character of Hacked Up.)

  • Do you like blue cheese?

Peter Tao:It’s not my favorite thing in the world but a salad with a few blue cheese crumbles isn’t the all that bad.

  • Have you ever smoked cigarettes?

Peter Tao I tried when I was fifteen and my dad caught me. He was furious. That alone was enough to stop me from ever trying it again.

  • Do you own a gun?

Peter Tao  I’m a cop. What do you think?

  • What flavor Kool-Aid?

Peter Tao  Is there a vodka flavor?

  • Do you get nervous before a Dr. appt?

Peter Tao That would mean I actually go to the doctor. I prefer to stay away from anyone wearing a white coat.

  • What do you think of hot dogs?

Peter Tao Full of some of the grossest stuff out there. I love em.

  • Favorite Movie?

Peter Tao Probably not the best choice but I love the Dirty Harry movies. I don’t envision myself as Dirty Harry and I’m much more by the book than he is but, damn, sometimes I wish I could do what he does and get away with it.

  • What do you prefer to drink in the morning?

Peter Tao  Coffee. The stronger the better.

  • Can you do a push up?

Peter Tao   Absolutely. Try to do ‘em every day to keep myself in shape.

  • What’s your favorite piece of jewelry?

Peter Tao   I have a ring from my maternal grandmother that is very sentimental to me. It was her wedding ring. If I were straight I’d give it to my wife. Marriage isn’t in my future, even if it is legal. I have no plans to come out. It would destroy my parents.

  • Do you have a favorite hobby?

Peter Tao   Does work count as a hobby?

  • Do you have ADD?

Peter Tao Nope. I’m skilled at multi-tasking and staying focused.

  • Do you wear glasses?

Peter Tao  20-20 vision, baby.

  • Who was your childhood idol?

Peter Tao  George Michael

  • Name three drinks you regularly drink?

Peter Tao  Coffee, Beer, Vodka.

  • Current worries?

Peter Tao   Figuring out how to have a love life and not have my parents find out.

  • Current hate?

Peter Tao  Beliefs that exist simply because someone a long time ago said it was so.

  • Favorite place to be?

Peter Tao   The police station.

  • How do you bring in the new year?

Peter Tao    Last year was with my best friend, Jamey. This year…depends what’s going on with Bryce.

  • Where would you like to go?

Peter Tao:    Bryce’s bed. It hasn’t happened yet. Hopefully soon.

About the Author

Romance on the Edge

Ethan Stone doesn’t write your typical boy meets boy stories. With a combination of love and suspense he makes his characters work hard for their HEAs. If they can survive what he puts them through, then they can survive anything. He enjoys Romance with an Edge.

Ethan has been reading mysteries and thrillers since he was young. He’s had a thing for guys in uniform for just as long. That may have influenced the stories he writes.

He’s a native Oregonian with two kids. One of whom has made him a grandfather three times over; even though he is way too young.

Preface:

I love short stories. Sometimes a brief “snapshot” taken from a couple’s larger story is all that’s wanted. The narrative of “how they met” is the focus of six of the shorts in this set—quirky tales ranging from meeting at a charity fundraiser, to college kids pranking each other, to a mishap at a XXX adult video arcade.

Also included is a story featuring a well-established couple’s wedding dilemma, a friends-to-lovers tale, a coming-out-of-the-closet drama, and a continuation short that follows one of those how-we-mets. Rounding out this collection is an account revisiting the main characters from my full-length novel, ’Til Death Do Us Part.

All of these stories are contemporary, although one has a bit of paranormal flavor to it. Heat ratings range from “fairly sweet” to “rather steamy.” Excepting the final story, all were originally written in 2008 and early 2009. One (“Photo Shoot”) started out as a prompt word ficlet that I later fleshed out to a more complete story. Each has received a thorough overhaul, some more extensive than others. I hope you’ll enjoy reading them as much as I did writing them.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Snapshots exclusive excerpt

(from Nevermore)

Ted made his way to the edge of the dance floor and looked around. He saw a man staring at him— tall and muscular, just like Ted preferred. The stranger smiled, and Ted grinned back. Just as he started to walk around the room to join the man, a voice, low and sensual, came from behind.

“I was hoping you’d be here tonight, Raven.” That voice always sent a jolt straight to his cock.

“Caesar.” Ted turned and smiled. At six-three, the handsome man stood several inches taller than Ted, and had short, light brown hair and deep blue eyes. “Always good to see you, babe.”

“Darling, you are breathtaking as always.” Caesar looked Ted up and down as a saucy grin spread across his face. “Shall we dance?”

“Of course.” Ted put out his hand.

Caesar led him to the middle of the floor, then pulled him close so their bodies rubbed as they danced.

Ted closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around Caesar’s neck. The man gave Ted’s ass cheeks a squeeze, and Ted ground his pelvis against him so Caesar could feel his growing hard-on.

Caesar’s chuckle vibrated across his broad chest and through Ted. “Is that for me?”

Ted nibbled at Caesar’s neck. “It’s all yours, babe.”

New Love, New Beginnings. This Week at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

book_of_love_

New Love, New Beginnings. Hey, Its March!

March sails in this week full of itself!  March is a month just popping with meaning and celebrations of all kinds.  The Vernal Equinox begins March 20th (although it has felt like Spring here for days).  There’s the Ides of March (poor Caesar), St. Patricks Day (get out your green), World Wildlife Day is on the 3rd, International Forest Day is on the 21st and more religious days than I will go into here. Here in the States, even Daylight Savings Time returns (ugh).

For me, however, it signals the return of spring. New growth of all types from buds and tiny leaves appearing from shrub to perennial flowers to birds busy with their nesting building in anticipation of young to follow.  The eagles at the National Arboretum have already laid their first egg of the season. Yes, love is in the air whether it be new love or that of established lovers like the eagle pair I just mentioned.  Of course, that’s my link to my topic this week and perhaps this month.

Love stories! What’s your preference?  Do you even have one? New Love, New Beginnings. Lovers Reunited, Second Chance at Love?  I have to admit I have a huge fondness for the second trope.  I love it when ex-lovers get a chance to have their HEA, to get that love that de-railed back on track after whatever broke them up and time gone by (go ahead count up the cliches, lol).  But then again, ah, those stories of men finding their soul mates and never letting go, no matter the obstacles.  They grab me too.  Ok, I love them both.  How about you?  Do you all have a preference?  Yes? No?  I’m dying to find out. Giveaway time!

Give me your favorites and why.

Blurb

Kyle and Jonathan were perfect for each other, the two halves that, once together, made a whole. And then one snowy night just before Parents’ Weekend on the campus of Hamilton University, Kyle drops a bomb: he’s breaking up with Jonathan.

Follow the couple through the stormy (in more ways than one) night that ensues. Why has Kyle suddenly decided to throw away something so precious and good?

The answers lie in their backgrounds, and will gradually come to light as a winter blizzard rages around the young couple.

Their tortured paths bring them to the covered bridge where their love had sprung to life on a hot summer day. But will the warmth of that memory and the heat of the love they once shared be enough to outclass the storm, and more importantly, bring them back together?

Excerpt

Jonathan got up, grinning, and crossed the room, ready to fling open his door and his arms to Kyle. He could picture his boyfriend in his mind’s eye: the short muscular build, the hazel eyes, the mop of curly sandy hair that blended so perfectly with the constellation of freckles across his nose. He thought of the little tragus piercing in Kyle’s ear that for some inexplicable reason, Jonathan adored and could always be counted upon to play with his tongue, which drove Kyle nuts. The knock sounded again, and Jonathan took exactly three seconds to check his image in the mirror above his dresser. His blond hair had been cut that morning and, with a little dab of gel, looked stylish and alluring, the classic combo to his pale blue eyes and dark lashes. He wore only a plain white T-shirt and a pair of plaid boxer shorts. He figured they’d be naked soon enough, so why bother with a complicated ensemble that would only slow them from getting to the main course?

Jonathan would swear his heart began to beat faster and he got a little breathless as he approached the door. He couldn’t stop the beaming smile that spread across his face as he reached for the knob.

But that smile vanished when he saw Kyle standing out in the hallway, staring down at the floor and radiating dejection. His shoulders slumped and there was about him an overall lack of energy. When he managed to tear his gaze away from the tile floor, he looked at Jonathan with sadness. Jonathan frowned too when he could discern no excitement, no joy to see him, in those hazel eyes.

This was not the picture he had been anticipating when he swung open the door.

“Good God, Kyle, what’s the matter? Is everything okay?”

Kyle’s gaze returned to the floor and Jonathan shook his head, reached out and forcibly pulled his boyfriend inside the room, closing the door behind him. Jonathan cocked his head, “What’s wrong, sweetheart?” He smelled cooking grease on Kyle, the after-effect of toiling in the Hamilton University student cafeteria. Normally, he would suggest the two of them slip down the hall and into a shower together — a nice, sudsy, both clean and dirty beginning to their three-day weekend.

But the game plan seemed to have changed. Kyle’s bad mood, so rare and unexpected, cast a pall on the anticipation Jonathan had felt only moments ago.

Kyle didn’t answer.

Jonathan turned down the music, which was Moby’s “We Are All Made of Stars” and said, “Sit down, Kyle. Let’s talk. It’s obvious from your face, hell, from even the way you’re standing there that something is very wrong. What is it? Trouble in one of your classes? Is that Psych bitch giving you problems again?”

Kyle slumped down in one of the desk chairs, his long legs extended before him, the rest of his body sort of curled into itself. Jonathan wondered why Kyle didn’t take a seat on the bed, so they could at least sit side-by-side, but he let the move pass without comment.

“No. Everything is cool in my classes. In fact, I’m on track to make the dean’s list this quarter.” Not even a glimmer of a smile heralded this happy news. Kyle simply continued to appear distant and, yes, forlorn.

“So what then? Work? Trouble at home?”

Kyle snickered when Jonathan mentioned home — and Jonathan had no idea why. One of the mysteries with Kyle was that he had never been too forthcoming about his home life, only that he was from a small town in eastern Ohio, on the Ohio River, and that he was an only child. Jonathan still had no idea what his parents did for a living or how he even felt about his old hometown. Kyle shook his head. “No. And no.”

Jonathan didn’t want to entertain what the other possibility could be. He sank down onto his bed, nausea rising in his gut as he pondered being told Kyle had cheated on him (he was, at least in Jonathan’s mind, about the most handsome hunk on the campus of Hamilton University), or that he “wanted to see other people” or that he “needed a break” or that “it’s not you, it’s me” and he needed to end things between them.

But none of those scenarios could possibly be true, could they?
