BLURB

Two Natures is the coming-of-age story of Julian Selkirk, a fashion photographer in New York City in the early 1990s. His faith in Jesus helped him survive his childhood in the Atlanta suburbs with an abusive alcoholic father, but the church’s condemnation of his sexual orientation has left him alienated and ashamed.

Yearning for new ideals to anchor him after his loss of faith, Julian seeks his identity through love affairs with three very different men: tough but childish Phil Shanahan, a personal trainer who takes a dangerous shortcut to success; enigmatic, cosmopolitan Richard Molineux, the fashion magazine editor who gives him his first big break; and Peter Edelman, an earnest left-wing activist with a secret life.

Amid the devastation of the AIDS epidemic and the racial tensions of New York politics, Julian learns to see beyond surface attractions and short-term desires, and to use his art to serve his community.

TN Ch 8  Exclusive Excerpt for Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

“No repeats,” I told Phil. Again.

“What if there’s no one new around?”

Phil’s sulky tone, and the tickling of his fingers up my bare leg, distracted me in opposite ways from fixing us the sole breakfast dish in my repertoire, green tea and cheese grits, with a little something extra to chase away his hangover. “Try a different club. This is NewYork. They have more than one.”

“I don’t tell you what to do at your fancy-ass parties.”

“There are no parties. The only time I get down on my knees is to fix the wind machine.” Fourteen-hour days in the studio didn’t leave me much time to enjoy the no-strings-attached side of our relationship. Sure, I’d squeezed in a few gropes and groans in the back room of New Eden, jolts of furtive pleasure that left me dizzy with the momentary assurance that catching a boy like Phil hadn’t been just a fluke. Until I remembered that he could have the same adventures, and more, all day at the Ironman, training athletes who bench-pressed more than I weighed, while I was hauling tripods on the subway.

“So…no repeats, right?” I breathed out in a rush, before his hand between my legs could sidetrack the conversation. My arm jostled the pot on the stove, spattering the dingy wall.

“Okay, okay,” he murmured into my neck. His breath was hot, like cigarette embers. Phil was like that, rough words at cross-purposes with his body language. I was happier when I only believed half of it.

“And no bringing them back here.” I pressed my advantage, and my hip into his groin.

“You paying rent?”

“I will be, next month, I promise. But that’s not the point. I thought maybe, out of the goodness of your heart, you would spare me the sight of somebody else’s pubes on my soap when I shower in the morning.”

“Come on, maybe you’d like one of them. Probably take him away from me ’cause you’re so gorgeous.”

You’re all I want, I nearly said, but smiled and settled for the compliment, rather than admit something I wasn’t sure was true. Two months into living with Phil, and more than a year since our first hookup, I was working up the nerve to clarify our open relationship, and gaining a begrudging appreciation for its opposite. Marriage has the advantage of simplicity, like government forfeiture of your assets. Over here: you get the last name, the bankbook, the steering wheel, the 60-hour workweek, and the drunken tumble with your wife’s best friend. And you: here’s the kids, the white dress, the dinner table, the paid-up mortgage, and the moral high ground. As for me, right now the good life looked like a mattress in the basement with only two pairs of sneakers by the door, but this was proving more complicated than ordering a McDonald’s Happy Meal without the fries.

I was in my final semester at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and interning as an unpaid assistant to the photographer Dane Langley. More like assistant to the assistants; while Pierre accompanied Dane to Paris and Vince lunched with ad agency reps, I fixed lighting equipment and shopped for organic baby food. Everyone at school said I was lucky to have landed a spot with Langley, who had done album covers for Paula Abdul and Gloria Estefan, and had an ad contract with Revlon. Last week his girlfriend had dropped by with their new baby, which they left with me, sans backup diaper, while they went to lunch at Lutèce. The baby’s name was Taylor, which didn’t give me a clue to its gender. I figured, since the girlfriend was Swedish, it might respond to Abba, and indeed, it fell asleep for a full twenty-five minutes after I sang “Dancing Queen” four-and-a-half times.

Between these glamorous assignments and my job pouring three-dollar coffees at The Big Cup, I was barely at school anymore except to pick up my mail. Phil had resisted my switching my address to his apartment, claiming that his sublet wasn’t, technically speaking, totally legal. On the bright side, this spared me from telling my parents that I was living with him.

Having a male roommate wasn’t suspicious in itself, but combined with a career in fashion, and the fact that Phil and I could quote long stretches of dialogue from “The Prince of Tides,” my mother might be forced to recognize that her sensitive boy was experimenting with the homosexual lifestyle. Then would come the weekly letters, suddenly seeded with references to girls I hadn’t thought about since junior high, who had all grown up to be God-fearing, bosomy

A-students and were miraculously still single. Last week in Dane’s studio I had seen Allure cover model Cheryl Kingston’s rose-tipped breasts, pale and translucent as porcelain teacups. I was replacing the roll of seamless paper for the backdrop, and she ignored me, as was her right. Dane was all honey to her, a come-to-Papa smile on his swarthy bearded face. She didn’t have to worry about being touched, not like your average Tatiana or Mary Lou, as Dane guided them into

poses for some designer’s spring catalog, his hand steering this one’s waist, unbuttoning that one’s sweater. The Swedish girlfriend was half his age. They seemed very happy, but that was probably because her mother knew where to send her mail.

I was sorting through the latest stack of bills and credit card offers on our bed one morning while Phil fed me strawberries. He could be very sweet. Just when I’d gotten used to his blue-collar tough-guy routine, he’d surprise me with little things like washing my back in the shower, or reading to me from one of the books he read to make up for not going to college. As pillow talk, I ranked the I Ching above Atlas Shrugged but below Arnold: The Education of a Bodybuilder. But it’s the thought that counts. Without Phil, I might have forgotten that there were publications without pictures in them.

Leaning back against Phil’s warm bare stomach, I tossed my junk mail on the floor without looking through it. He ran juice-stained fingers through my hair. Sometimes I was so happy that a place like this existed, where I could be with a guy, naked and alone. He understood what it meant, too, a privilege that was all ours, no matter how many hours we spent running other people’s errands.

“Wait, that looks like a real letter,” he said, picking an envelope out of the discard pile.

I recognized my mother’s square ivory-tinted stationery. “See, I told you I’d be able to pay the rent.”

After depositing two fifties in the coffee tin on the windowsill (I never worried about our communal accounting; Phil had too much pride to be a sponger), I skimmed the closely written pages. “Huh, my sister’s looking at colleges in — whoa!” I caught my breath and my vision blurred for a moment. My jerky hands hunted around for the envelope. “What’s the postmark on this letter?”

Phil found the cast-off envelope under our rumpled blanket. “Last Monday. Why?”

“You see, this is what happens because I don’t get my mail here,” I snapped at him.

“Man, we’ve been through this. What is your problem?”

I reread the paragraph that had raised my heart rate faster than a triple espresso. “They’re coming.”

“Who? Where? Careful, your elbow’s in the bowl.” Phil rescued the strawberries in time to spare me from washing the sheets twice this month.

“My family. Here. Next week.”

An Alisa Review: College Discipline by Caitlin Ricci

Rating:  4.5 stars out of 5

college-discipline-by-caitlin-ricciFour stories of sex, romance, and college boys learning to kneel.

Hitachi is a police officer reduced to being a glorified babysitter for a rich man’s son. He resents his assignment, but Gabriel isn’t the brat Hitachi believes he is. He’s a man who likes pain, and who wants Hitachi to let loose with him too.

Leo fantasizes about having sex with a complete stranger, but when he gets his chance it isn’t nearly as wonderful as he imagined it to be. His dad’s boss tries to teach him a lesson about making stupid choices, but his education in submission doesn’t end there.

Jensen is horrible at math, and now he’s in a calculus class that he’s barely getting through. His parents get him a tutor, but this tutor is interested in teaching Jensen about far more than just math.

Timothy comes back home, to a tiny town he can’t stand, when his mother’s illness gets worse. He’s made a string of bad decisions, and his mother’s friend is determined to turn his life around before Timothy gets lost entirely.

This was a wonderful collection of stories.  All of these boys were looking for something even if all of them didn’t know it, but are willing to embrace their desires and the men that will help guide them.  The one thing I loved with these stories is they all have a HFN ending with a positive outlook towards their future together.

Jensen’s Tutoring Session

We see Jensen’s point of view and how he opens up and puts down his defenses to do what Sam believes will help with his constant distraction.  It works well, but Jensen is willing to put the work in to get better.  Seeing Sam open himself up to Jensen when he puts his feelings and dreams on the line is heartwarming.

Leo’s Grand Plan

Leo’s fantasy isn’t quite what he thought it would be, but when Donovan shows him what real submission can be like he is hooked.  We see Leo’s determination to show Donovan that he can be what he needs and their acceptance of each other was nice, even seeing that Donovan doesn’t plan to hide their relationship forever helps.

Hitachi’s New Assignment

Hitachi’s complete annoyance with the whole situation at the beginning of the story is adorable, I understand it but maybe not to the extent he was.  Gabriel is tired of his father’s match making, but is willing to make the best of it when he finally gets someone that fits perfectly with his desires.  I loved seeing Hitachi’s walls fall and his hopes that maybe he can have a future with someone who wants the same things he does.

Timothy’s First Rodeo

Man, Timothy must have really been a jerk when he left his hometown after high school and other’s views of him haven’t gotten any better as his mother has continued to get sicker and he hasn’t been there to support her.  When he does come home he unfortunately has to live with the consequences of his actions, but Adam is willing to help pick him up and get started again on the right path.  It’s sad to see Timothy reevaluating his life knowing he has tried so hard, but hasn’t had the right support behind him.

Cover art by Natasha Snow is perfect and I love the understated picture.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Unzipping 7D (Unzipped Shorts #2) by J.C. Long

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

unzipping-7d-by-j-c-longThis is a delightful short story full of sexy situations, two hot guys, and an app that fulfills its promise.

Frequent traveler Jordan Price uses the time in the airport lounge to search his Unzipped app—just in case. After all, meeting a hot guy here might help pass the time. As it happens there is a guy nearby, and in fact, Heath is not only nearby, he’s on the same flight. Grabbing a few minutes to chat is pretty unsatisfying since Jordan wants to get to know Heath in more of a physical way, but the flight is called and it seems all they can do is board.

However, the very enterprising Jordan stops at 7D and convinces the passenger next to Heath to switch seats with him so he can be with his “buddy.” And from there until the end of the flight, the men get to know one another quite well. In fact, they are members of the Mile High Club by flight’s end.

I was very impressed and actually pretty surprised that the author managed so much character development within forty pages. I was also connected to both characters quickly and was cheering for them to get some alone time. And then what I got, by the end of the story, was a very pleasant surprise and the possibility of at least a HFN. Loved these guys!

I highly recommend this one. What a great way to spend an afternoon!

~~~~
The cover by Natasha Snow is very cleverly done with a thumbnail of a man with a bare torso on the face of a cell phone being held in another man’s hand—the perfect representation of a pickup app.
A MelanieM Review: Imago (Imago #1) by N.R. Walker
Rating: 5 stars out of 5
imago-by-nr-walkerNerdy, introverted genius lepidopterist, Lawson Gale, is an expert on butterflies. He finds himself in a small town in Tasmania on a quest from an old professor to find an elusive species that may or may not even exist.
Local Parks and Wildlife officer, Jack Brighton, is an ordinary guy who loves his life in the sleepy town of Scottsdale. Along with his Border collie dog, Rosemary, his job, and good friends, he has enough to keep from being lonely.
But then he meets Lawson, and he knows he’s met someone special. There’s more to catching butterflies, Jack realises. Sometimes the most elusive creatures wear bowties, and sometimes they can’t be caught at all.
Lawson soon learns there are butterflies he can’t learn about it in books. They exist only in a touch, in a kiss, in a smile. He just has to let go first, so these butterflies can fly.
Imago is the story of finding love, bowties, and butterflies.
If I had asked N.R. Walker to write a book just for me, Imago is it.  Talk about a book made for a naturalist who reads m/m romances!  Imago comes complete with N.R. Walker’s outstanding matchup of characters, a setting to sink into, and a storyline that grabbed me at every narrative choice the author makes.  If I could, I’d add on a star or two as I loved it that much.
Starting with the meet up on the plane and then in the airport, Walker lays out that these two are special, ready to deflect all the stereotypes ready to be thrown at them. Sure, some initial traits you might expect are there.  The  fumbling, the lateness, etc from  Lawson and from the tall, handsome Jack the sheer capability to manage things.  But Walker uses that as an outline to slowly fill in the real men, the ones full of intellect and passion for all sorts of things that we get to discover as the story continues and they reveal themselves to each other.  I love that in a romance and N.R. Walker brings us so intimately into these men’s lives that I feel as though I’m there with them, listening and watching something special unfold.
Imago has a scientific meaning, one that’s revealed at the end of the story.  I’m going to leave it for the reader to discover as its a beautiful way to end the novel.  But science and the passion for nature and conservation is woven throughout this story.  One man is a Parks and Wildlife officer, the other a lepidopterist.  Both men love nature and understand the need to preserve, document and promote conservation of the species.  I believe the author believes in this as well but the message is delivered beautifully through her ties with her country and with the flora and fauna she describes in her stories.  We get plenty of that here through Jack and Lawson’s hikes and preservation work.  I loved every word and sentence! The science is well researched and tools of the trade are spot on. It was so well done in every way.  I didn’t find myself cringing once (which is a real thing when reading books about field research and park rangers).
Along with the passion for each other and for their jobs, there’s some action and suspense too.  Walker gives us everything as well as a HFN that’s realistic and perfection.  I’m so happy we didn’t get a HEA for these men.  That would never work here.  But there’s a promise for more and I can’t wait!
Here’s a book I’m already getting ready to open up again for the shear pleasure of a second read.  So yes, I highly recommend it.  Now if only I can find the patience to wait for the second book to come out.
Cover art is perfection as well.  Look at that butterfly as a bowtie!
A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Leaning Into Love (Leaning Into #1) by Lane Hayes
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
leaning-into-love-by-lane-hayesLet me start by saying I love Lane Hayes’s work, so I immediately jumped at the chance to read this one for review. I was given three weeks, but I took less than three days to read it, savor it, and write this review. This story was delicious, delightful, and decadent. Better than a fine piece of chocolate!
Set in San Francisco, this story was originally part of an anthology and is now going to be the start of a new series. All I can say is “Sign me up!” because if the rest are anything like this one, I’m all in.
There’s not much I love more than a geek, so I was quite happy to find that Eric Shuster is that and more. He’s also cute, humble, sweet, and the type of person who sees to the needs of his friends before his own. His work partner and ex-lover, Nick, has announced that he’s getting married, but Eric can see immediately that he’s marrying for money, not love. The girl is the daughter of a wealthy investor and Nick is always on the lookout for more funds for their technology company, whether they need them or not.
As the story evolves, Eric finally faces the fact that he and Nick were really never in love, just friends and fuck buddies, and there’s no reason to grieve his loss. He ends up spending more time with his friends, especially Zane Richards, a handsome sportsman who loves his water sports, whether they be surfing, water polo, or sailing. In fact, Zane has his own company working with the wealthy who need an experienced yachtsman to simply sail or to race. Eric and Zane become closer than they’ve ever been in the dozen years they’ve known each other as they rediscover their likes and dislikes and explore a deeper connection than the usual surface level among friends.
I highly enjoyed watching their friends-to-lovers relationship develop. Ms. Hayes provided the perfect amount of heat and humor and even a little angst, though thankfully that wasn’t overdone. Just give me a love story that will cheer me up, make me break out my personal fan, and leave me feeling warm and fuzzy and you’ve made my day. This one made my day. I highly recommend it to all MM romance lovers, and especially to those who enjoy friends-to-lovers romances. Yummy!
Cover art by Reese Dante shows a male naked torso against a scenic background photo depicting the Golden Gate Bridge with sailboats gracefully floating along below on the deep-blue water of the bay. It feels refreshing and is both attractive and pertinent to the story.
“I liked this book, like really liked it. It is a sweet sweet m/m romance novel with a wonderful HEA.
Thank you V.S. Morgan!! 5 Stars because: ” Love conquers all.” – Goodreads Review
After witnessing his mother’s death, a once outgoing preschooler is now a quiet shadow of himself. The little boy suffers nightmares and rarely speaks, choosing to use the basic sign language he learned in daycare. Desperate to help his little nephew, Virge Stevens takes a leave of absence from the LAPD to bring Donovan, known as D to Montana for the therapy he needs.
A chance meeting at the library changes Virge and his nephew’s lives forever.
Jared Malone is one of five brothers, right smack damn in the middle. He is the peacemaker and the one who gets shit done. When his younger brother gets sick, Jared fills in reading to small children at the library. There he encounters a tall, dark, and handsome stranger and his cute little boy. Jared is immediately drawn to Virge but is still dealing with the betrayal of an abusive ex.
As the Malone family welcomes them to the ranch and into their lives, Virge’s instant attraction for Jared grows, but the cowboy is fifteen years younger than him. Will he be rejected?
Both men have secrets. Secrets that could destroy the connection between them. Can they overcome the odds and find happiness together?
Another blond cowboy stood in the middle, working with a horse. He had a long rope around its neck, guiding it around the ring at a quick clip. The shirtless cowboy spoke in a firm yet quiet tone. Virge nearly choked on his tongue, eyeing the golden skin and muscles on display. This was their cowboy.
The man whistled, and the horse stopped. He rubbed its shoulder, his back to them, as they reached the ring’s split-rail fence.
“Daddy!” D shrieked, and the horse whinnied and shied, bumping into the man as it swung around.
“Whoa, easy, Spike,” the cowboy soothed.
Virge struggled to prevent his nephew from launching out of his arms while the cowboy calmed the large, skittish animal. He’d never been near a horse and was struck by its size and power, which the other man skillfully controlled. As the cowboy turned, Virge saw a tattoo on his chest. A redwing blackbird with a rainbow-hued ribbon dangling from its beak. His heart beat a little faster seeing the colorful ink. Could he be gay? The cowboy handed the rope to a dark-haired man before pulling on a T-shirt that stretched tight over those muscles. He suppressed a disappointed sigh.
Nate chuckled. “You’ve got some explaining to do, bro.”
“Hi, I’m Jared. I remember you from the library.” He approached with a rolling gait Virge found extremely sexy and offered his hand after wiping it against his denim-clad thigh. Damn, he was built all over and tall, just an inch or two shorter than his own height.
Virge shook his hand, hyperaware of the firm grasp of warm, work-hardened skin. “I’m Virge, and this is Donovan. He goes by D.”
“Glad you could make it out—”
“Why did he call Jared daddy?” Nate interrupted.
“He calls all men daddy and women mommy. If he especially likes someone, he adds their first names. D doesn’t talk much, so he must like Jared.” What about this cowboy had inspired his nephew to talk?
An Alisa Review: Terrible Twos by Megs Pritchard
Rating:  4 stars out of 5
terrible-twos-by-megs-pritchardAfter leaving University, Zach struggled to find employment. When he eventually found work in a call centre, he was ecstatic.
 But from day one he had a problem.
 After an accidental run-in with the manager, Geoff, Zach was under no illusions that his days were numbered.
 While dealing with is work issues, Zach is left devastated when his sister dies.
 Now, struggling at work with a boss who may or may not like him, Zach is now raising his two young nephews alone.
 One night a chance encounter with Geoff changes everything. But is Geoff willing to stand by Zach or will he walk away?
 This was a cute story.  I have read a couple of this author’s books before and I was hoping I would enjoy this one just as much and I defiantly did.  Zach is working so hard to be an adult, but no matter what he has been hit with problems or something going bad in his life.
Zach is just getting into the swing of things at his new job when he is hit with the news that his sister and brother in law have died in a car crash.  Suddenly he is a father to two young boys that are missing their parents.  To top it off his boss keeps giving him more and more crap at work and Oliver, his oldest nephew, is going through the terrible twos.
This story is told from Zach’s point of view and you can’t help but feel for him and his situation.  I can’t imagine having to raise two little boys with no support system what so ever.  Not knowing what John is thinking really makes him seem like a jerk from the beginning, but even he admits to it when Zach confronts him.  At some points I really wished John had a bit more of a backbone than just running scared when something goes wrong, I mean Zach has enough going on than to deal with more crap.  I absolutely loved Zach’s nephews, this author didn’t paint the kids as perfect like most do, I could just picture everything that they did because it was exactly the kind of thing most kids really do.
Cover art by AM Snead is adorable and gives sweet visuals of Zach and his nephews.
When Galen buys into a football team, promoting and wheeling and dealing are the name of the game. He’s so busy he hardly gets to see Shane anymore, which means a lot of lonely naps on the couch.
Shane is tied up with managing the bar, covering for unreliable bartenders, and serving drinks to good-time party boys. Used to be Galen couldn’t get enough of him. Now he can hardly pry Galen away from the phone, and Shane starts to wonder where he stands in Galen’s life. Will things ever be the way they were?
When Galen starts to forget their dates, the pressure builds, jealousy and hurt swirling into a tropical storm. Galen and Shane need to seek shelter in each other before everything they’ve built is washed away.
Now I love me some Shane and Galen, that’s true.  And goodness knows that sometimes in the swamps, there isn’t much to do but kick back, drink, have tons of sex and love on each other.  But oh my is there a ton of loving, sex, sex, sex in Tropical Depression.   I’m surprised that alligator didn’t come out of the pool and yell ‘enough, boys, take a breather’ at them.
And what I’m missing is those plot bits that fit so nicely in between the hot sex.  These two men are so sweet with each other, the dialogs and conversation so great, especially when Momma comes into it, and then a puppy called Goober, plus there an alligator in a pool and a bar with regulars.  So much ‘stuff’ to fill with plot threads that I crave that when I get more sex between the guys, well, it started to get a little old by the end. Then each starts to realize what the real issues were that have been getting between them.  Len working too long at a job he really wasn’t happy doing, Shane as well being a manager when he’s happiest as a bartender and all the time they just want to spend time at the Bait Shop and with each other.  Sweet, sappy, and why we love their story. And them of course.
Followed by more sex.
The swamps, the locals and this couple and the way B.A. Tortuga puts her touch on all three is why I read this series.  This was a nice addition to it but the first was terrific.  I can’t wait for the next one to roll out.  Knowing this couple, trouble is on the way.
Cover Artist: Alexandria Corza.  Cover works for the setting. I think I’m over the whole shirtless torso thing by now.
