An Alisa Audiobook Review: Sweetwater by Lisa Henry and Dorian Bane (Narrator)

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

sweetwater_audiobookWyoming Territory, 1870.

Elijah Carter is afflicted. Most of the townsfolk of South Pass City treat him as a simpleton because he’s deaf, but that’s not his only problem. Something in Elijah runs contrary to nature and to God. Something that Elijah desperately tries to keep hidden.

Harlan Crane, owner of the Empire saloon, knows Elijah for what he is—and for all the ungodly things he wants. But Crane isn’t the only one. Grady Mullins desires Elijah too, but unlike Crane, he refuses to push the kid.

When violence shatters Elijah’s world, he is caught between two very different men and two devastating urges: revenge, and despair. In a boomtown teetering on the edge of a bust, Elijah must face what it means to be a man in control of his own destiny, and choose a course that might end his life . . . or truly begin it for the very first time.

I haven’t read many books set in this time period so I was eager to give this a try.  I felt the setting was done really well and I could totally picture this western town as if I was there.  There were a host of characters all of which were felt realistic and added to the overall world building.  The majority of the story was told by Elijah who was a really different type of character but I struggled with him a bit.  He had a hard life and was very much a victim.  It was totally realistic and believable but as a result I don’t think I ever really warmed to him.  He annoyed me each time he did not stand up for himself.  I felt sorry for him but it was hard for me to find him a believable romance partner.  I didn’t see what Grady saw in him.  Even though parts of the story were told through Grady’s point of view I still didn’t feel the connection.  Elijah felt more like a child who needed a caregiver not a man who needed a romance partner.  So, I liked it as a fiction story but not so much as a romance.  The writing was really well done and this author is generally one of my favorites.  This was just not the book for me.
The book was narrated by Dorian Bane who I had never listened to before.  I thought he did an excellent job on all of the characters.  This was a big cast and I thought he did each of them equally well.  This is an audio that I would definitely recommend.
Cover by L.C. Chase:  I love the cover.  I think it fits the story perfectly.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Commitment Ranch (Leaning N #1) by B.A. Tortuga

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

commitment-ranch-by-ba-tortugaA fist fight, a snowstorm, a stolen kiss in the barn… and a second chance at love.

Ford Nixel has two law offices, two fancy condominiums, and all the right connections. In short, he has everything he wants.

The last thing he needs is his Uncle Ty’s stake in the Leaning N, a ranch that’s been in the family for generations. Ford hasn’t even been to the ranch in over a decade, not since he left his boyfriend Stoney behind and headed back to college alone.

Ford arrives at the Leaning N to find Stoney, now a single father, right where he left him. A fist fight, a snowstorm, and a stolen kiss in the barn later—Ford knows none of the heat between them has dissipated.

Dreamspun Desires and B.A. Tortuga!  A combination I wouldn’t have thought would have worked and yet its a winner across the boards.  Using the lovers reunited trope, Tortuga uses the potential loss of the family ranch to bring lawyer Ford Nixel back home to a ranch he hasn’t seen in over 10 years and the man he loved and lost.

Its a premise guaranteed to draw a reader in and it does so here.  In Commitment Ranch (Leaning N #1) by B.A.Tortuga, the author uses her considerable skills of characterization to set down her MCs from (as she would say) the get go.  The readers get a quick look see at Ford Nixel’s world and understand the hardworking, loner he’s become.  I wanted to know more about the man, so wrapped up that personal time is low on his priorities.  And when the phone call comes from his Uncle Ty, things start falling into place for the reader and Ford.

Tortuga is a wonderful storyteller.  Her narrative unfolds at a pace that lets our curiosity build along with our affection for the characters as we meet them. When the story’s location transfers to that of the Leaning N Ranch and Stony (and family), meeting him, his adorable boy, the chef…all those people have their own revelations and histories.  It’s like walking into a place and being welcomed.  You take it all in, while being there, absorbing pieces of each of them, while focused on the main romance and trials of Ford and Smokey.

That romance!  Its a torturous bunch of misunderstandings, some of which I never quite understood myself.  That would be the Uncle’s part in it.  Never did get that.  But the way in which each man had to work through their misgivings, past histories, and issues of trust?  Believable and got straight to my heart. The health problems with the uncle, along with the special needs of the child?  All handled with a light, caring hand that worked beautifully within the story without weighing it down. Plus I loved that ranch.  I could see that working ranch and the people who helped run it in my head so clearly that I was ready to book a week for myself.

There are, as with every Tortuga novel, wonderfully layered secondary characters and potential couples.  As this is the first in a series, I am wondering which and where the next book will take us.  The Leaning N Ranch is open for business.  Its first story was a terrific romance.  I can’t wait to see what the second one brings.  I absolutely recommend Commitment Ranch (Leaning N #1) by B.A. Tortuga.

Cover art by Paul Richmond.  Another terrific cover in the Dreamspun Desires group.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: Rented Heart by Garrett Leigh

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

rented-heart-by-garrett-leighLonely and grief-stricken, Liam Mallaney finally agrees to go out with his friends to make an attempt to get back into being social and sociable a year after he lost the man he considered his husband. As he seeks respite outside the bar and tries to decide whether or not to go home, he’s approached by a young man who propositions him. It isn’t until he decides to go with the guy that he finds out it’s going to cost him a wad of money.

Zac Payne has been surviving on the slim pickings in this small town ever since he moved from London to Holkham to start anew after he recovered from a drug addiction that nearly killed him six months before. Because his services aren’t as often in demand here, he has to work long days and nights to earn enough to support himself and his still drug addicted best friend, Jamie. He feels that he owes Jamie since he’s the one who got Zac to the help he needed on time.

When he takes Liam home he gets more than he bargained for however. Liam is a hot, sexy Alpha male who treats Zac differently from any of his other Johns. In fact, it’s the most memorable night Zac has ever spent with a man, and the first time he ever brought one to his own bed. Unable to forget Liam, Zac daydreams of what might be if he wasn’t a hooker, so when Liam contacts him after a few weeks, he gladly accepts his offer of spending the day with him.

In the meantime, Jamie is falling further into his addiction and though Zac knows he’s powerless to help him, when Jamie shows up at the apartment with a cache of drugs, Zac flips out and kicks him out. Distressed, he does something he’ll later regret while spending the balance of the day with Liam, who is rapidly becoming so much more than just a John.

The author takes us through Liam’s healing from the grief and despair that has plagued him for so long, introduces us to the life he shared with his lover, and gives us a glimpse into the real Liam behind the corporate façade he wears to keep the company they founded together running. Concurrently, we explore Zac’s personality, his hopes and dreams, and his deep desire to do whatever it takes to stay sober. We also get to know Jamie and while watching him rapidly deteriorate, not only in body but also in spirit, we learn the depth of Zac’s devotion to him.

There were many layers to this emotional drama, and with each page turn the author kept my interest at a peak with yet another new development or another perspective. Alternating scenes between Liam and Zac, because so much of the story took place when they weren’t together, added depth to the drama. I appreciated the strength of their inner resolve and the commitment each exhibited as they fought through the difficult circumstances that plagued them.

My respect for Garrett Leigh grows exponentially with each book I read from this author. I honestly wish I could give this story more than 5 stars, and I very highly recommend it to those who are looking for a story of redemption and the engaging characters who fight their way through their very divergent circumstances to finally be together.

Cover art by G.D. Leigh.  I love that the author does their own covers  so that what they imagines their characters to be ends up being expressed here.

About Rented Heart

Ex-surfer-turned-businessman Liam Mallaney moved back to Holkham, Norfolk, to mourn the loss of his husband. Grief and loneliness keep him a solitary figure, and he likes it that way. There’s no room in his broken heart for anything else.

Rentboy Zac Payne left London and most of his demons behind, but he still only knows one way to make a living. When he spots Liam in a club one night, it seems he’s found his mark. But Liam proves nicer—and their connection far deeper—than he’d bargained for.

Their arrangement quickly becomes too complicated for Zac, who has other things on his mind: namely his BFF and wayward flatmate, Jamie. Zac owes Jamie the world, and even as Jamie’s drug addiction destroys all they have, Zac won’t leave him behind.

Besides, Liam knows nothing of Zac’s home life, too caught up in his own head to think much beyond the crazy heat he and Zac share. But when trouble comes to Zac’s door, putting his life in danger, Liam must set his grief and anger aside to pick up the pieces of Zac’s shattered heart and his own.

A MelanieM Review: Open Road by M.J. O’Shea

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

open-road-by-m-j-osheaAngus has been with the same guy for ten years. When his boyfriend breaks up with him the night of his thirtieth birthday party and announces his engagement to a twenty-two-year-old less than ten hours later, Angus is… a mess. To put it lightly. He spends days in bed, drinks himself into a stupor every night, and ends up losing his job and his apartment. His best and oldest friend, Reece, decides it’s time for an intervention. And a change of scenery.

Reece and Angus take off on a buddy trip across the US. They don’t have much of a plan; they just start driving. It takes Angus a couple of days to do much more than grunt when Reece talks to him, but slowly he opens up. They drive, talk, heal, shout, drink a bit too much sometimes, dance, meet new friends… and somewhere between Portland, Oregon, and Portland, Maine, they fall in love.

Which was the last thing in the world Angus expected.

Open Road by M.J. O’Shea just hit all my buttons in a contemporary romance.  It had the right amount of realistic angst, terrific changes in location, a deep friendship that felt as real as an old school picture you keep on your wall, and a romance that slowly unfolds over the course of a journey.  One both geographical and emotional.

Of course it starts off with a romance that ends horribly with one half of the couple shattered and humiliated.  Our MC had already been feeling inadequate in almost every way in his relationship but Angus becomes depressed and unable to cope when his long term boyfriend leaves him for a younger version of himself. I felt myself falling completely into understanding and love with Angus here.  He is so believable as he reels from the humiliation he feels, the shame that he didn’t realize he had been cheated on, all the thoughts going through his head that leave him unable to function.  O’Shea puts us aside him, whether its laying next to him on the bed or crumpled on the floor, and makes us believe in this shattered man.

Our hopes (and his) will lie in his best friend.  That would be Reese, someone his old boyfriend despised and tried to cut out of his life to no avail.  These two have loved each other for most of their lives, have known each others families, they fit together  like puzzle pieces, except that Reese is straight of course.  Reese is another wonderful character here.  Layered, warm.  I could see Reese clearly in my  mind just within a few pages of O’Shea’s descriptions.  I knew exactly who Reese was. and what he meant to Angus.

But the real adventure for them and us starts on the road.  Circumstances which I won’t reveal compel Angus and Reese to head out on the road.  From city to city, where slowly Angus recovers and they discover that the love they have always felt for each other is something not just deep friendship but something more.  Its tenderhearted, authentic and moving.  And Angus’ recovery is not a smooth or easy one.  It can’t be with all he has emotionally gone through.  I appreciated that especially and it made where this couple ended up all  the more meaningful.

Highlights of the road trip?  It has to be New Orleans.  I almost wanted them to stay there.  It was magical, sexy and hot.  The ambiance that is New Orleans oozed off the page as did the love the author clearly has for the city and its people.  It left its spell on the couple and on me with this story.  I remember other locations, true, but none like I do their time in New Orleans.

The only thing that kept me from giving this a 5 star review was the last couple of pages. I don’t know…something about the ending felt a little too abrupt for a book and romance that took its time realistically getting to its final destination.  Perhaps I felt I didn’t need it, I was so happy with the story that came before.  Even now I’m not sure why the epilogue doesn’t sit quite right with me.  I know others won’t feel that way, just my opinion.  But all the rest of the story?  Glorious.  From rock bottom to recovery to love, this is a couple and novel I absolutely recommend.  Open Road by M.J. O’Shea is a terrific contemporary romance.  Grab it up and get started today.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is nice and has elements from the story.

BLURB

“Please don’t try to hold me in your arms.”

“Is This Desire?” documents the continuing story of a flourishing love as it grows at an increasing speed. As Robert faces Mitch’s demons, Mitch himself must reclaim his independence and sanity if they are ever to be together.

The moment had passed, the passion burned out, and the high of a first love was left lingering.

How quickly can one fall in love?

How quickly can one fall out of love?

Devastated by the realization of Mitch’s misgivings, Robert has cast himself aside unable to process his current reality. Exposed to a love that was debilitating but also rewarding, he must now face the consequences of secrets, addiction, and desire if he is to continue forward with his heart while disregarding his doubts.

Now, it was happening again.

Sooner or later, Mitch reappears in Robert’s life unable to break away from what he feels deep within as he questions the connection between them both. It is a consuming bond that could break at any moment by the forces meaning to keep them apart no matter what.

What else was Mitch hiding from him and was an attempt at reintroducing those feelings again the safest bet against Robert’s sanity?

He said, “Never stop.”

I said, “Never will.”

EXCERPT

“You have cornered me. Is that what you were going for?”

“No,” he implored.

“I don’t know what to make of this, dude. You are throwing me off, Mitch,” I explained with haste.

“I’m not trying to.”

“Then what, Mitch? This is getting a little exhausting between all of you. I’m not one to be playing games after the last go around. What do you want?” Part of me was beating the horse dead. Still, there was no reason I should be putting up with this. I knew the whole time I was standing here. There was an irrational part of me that wanted him to scoop me up in his arms. I wanted that for brief moments, and it sickened me. That was not the case this time.

“I have missed you.”

“Please, don’t.”

“I love—“ The words slipped from him, and it was painful to hear once more. The first two words seared into the recesses of my heart.

“Go fuck yourself, Mitch. How dare you? You are self-righteous. Do you realize how far this has gotten and how fucked up all of this has become? When will this end, huh? Will it ever? I don’t think it actually will.” There were no boundaries at this time, so it went farther than I expected it to when I first got here just thinking I was coming here to settle things with Deb. Now I was a hound of hell, and I didn’t think being taken advantage by anyone, whether it be Deb or Mitch himself was worth it.

For a moment I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye. Was it Deb trying to escape the confinements of her room? Was it her trying to leave the apartment? Leaving me alone here with Mitch was something I wouldn’t put past her right now. I glanced over quickly and still saw light trickling out from all sides of the door to her room. Shadows moved around that light assuring me that she didn’t successfully escape her self-imprisonment.

Mitch was rigid and unwavering; his hands shoved deep into his pockets. I could see the veins in this arm throb and pulse in quick succession. Although I had a pretty good idea at the time of this arranged meeting, I knew what I would say. Now I wasn’t too sure what else I could say to him to make him realize that there was nothing to gain out of this.

I looked up and stared straight at him. Not just into his soul, but his vitality. I needed to see what he was feeling right now for me to understand his words and explanations of not letting this go. I was searching for some unspoken confession from him. To truly look into someone’s eyes that you once loved and not see the hope and happiness from before is frightening. It was the complete opposite, and that was daunting. I saw pain and the possibility of regret. The concept that regret was something that he created between us forced me even farther away from his embrace in the past. It was particular moments like these that, yes, my mind me to places.

Places of “only if’s” and the “might have been’s.”

What road should I have taken? What path was the right?

What was down that particular road and was there anything worthwhile of a cause at the end of it?

I felt no resolution or firmness. Only the inconclusiveness of the present.

Each word from each our lips paved the way for a troubled path, something that had the possibility of being unfixed. The problem here was not only did I not know what to say once again but more forces were working against the cause in fixing it all. Certain individuals that were intimate friendships I had developed over the last several months. Friends that I thought I could trust. With each passing moment, there was more evidence contributing to this theory. It was proving hard for Deb to keep things separate like business and pleasure. I was afraid. Eventually, there would be no one else to turn to when I was in need.

Who was I kidding, excluding Phil almost all the friends I had made since coming to Buffalo for graduate school were my coworkers at Cafe Virginia. The ones I was keeping compared to the ones I was losing was soon to be outweighed by the other. Maybe it was my actions that were slowly contributing to the slow death of my small group of acquaintances. I just might have cleared things up with Janet after speaking to her about the meaning behind the kiss between her and Mitch that evening. Lucy was on the sidelines and not involved and I was thankful for at least that. Now I was becoming unaware of what Deb was thinking and what she was capable of. Even though one would think her actions weren’t malicious, believing she thought it was smart to get involved in one’s personal matters without consulting was alarming.

There was Mitch, untouched, stubborn, the statue in front of me. He was the incendiary of my thoughts that were seeking a straight path going forward.

His lips parted.

“I know that my actions have hurt a lot of people. People that I love dearly.”

I said nothing.

“I know you think I should probably just leave you alone for good.”

I closed my eyes tightly and still said nothing.

“I keep trying to deny what I have been feeling since day one. I have these feelings for you. I know that I am one stupid motherfucker and that I must be driving you crazy, kiddo. I cannot distinguish what exactly I am feeling now or what the difference is between right and wrong. Ignoring them isn’t helping me, either way, to come up with a solution to this mess.”

I finally had to say something.

“Is there anything to solve, though? Is there some huge decision that needs to be made? At this point, Mitch, I don’t think so.”

His eyebrows both raised up at the same time. He really shouldn’t be surprised at my answers and how I am reacting towards his responses.

“I think so,” he said. “I believe there is a lot that we both need to discuss. We haven’t spoken to each other since Deb’s party.”

I continued. “That was the point, wasn’t it? You being in my presence wasn’t something I was looking forward to, Mitch. You kind of threw the wrench in that not thinking before you act.”

“I understand your frustration, Robbie.”

There it was again. Robbie, he was using that nickname of mine that made my heart hurt because all it kept doing was pushing me back again into a corner. There it was, deep inside wrapped up in empathy, my inability to feel contempt and hatred one hundred percent for this man. It was his words of my name falling from his lips which lead me to believe there was something more to be said. I had to remember it was those lips that lied and sent me running after being pulled in hypnotically.

“Please, Mitch. My name is Robert. You don’t get to call me Robbie anymore,” I protested trying to make my way past him in the hallway.

As I walked past him, there was only just a brief moment of contact between us. So subtle that I don’t think I would have noticed on any other day but today I was hyper aware of my surroundings especially his ubiquity. It was all too stimulating and being sensitive to his touch only more of that touch. His knuckles ended up grazing my hip bone as I attempted to move past him swiftly as possible. Again, there it was deep inside some part of me. The sudden gush forth of the past desire that was once there between us. Why was my subliminal self not letting go of things that once were? The masochistic tendencies of love would continue tormenting me like this. This love was tremendous, and sentiments were running high.

I was thinking of running again. I had to get out of this apartment. I moved past Mitch quicker than I figured. Passing Deb’s closed bedroom, I expected that maybe she would have peeked out once she heard me moving around. Maybe she would have said goodbye to me now that she knew I was threatening to leave without resolution between her and I. Unfortunately I was wrong, the door remained closed, and there was nothing to make out beside the dead reticence behind the door. No common decency. The light still flickered, and I still couldn’t make out any of her movements. This occurrence was the potentiality in seeing the end of my friendship with Deb before my eyes. I had no idea even though all I knew was that I was going to have to see her at work eventually. There was no way I was going to quit working at Cafe Virginia. I needed the money.

My hands made a direct line for the door knob as I made the effort to escape. Mitch’s presence only got closer. I could feel him inching closer up behind me. Just then I froze on the spot not being able to move, it was like the will to move was pulled out from underneath me. It was not until I felt his touch that everything went black. His hand slid up the back of my neck making every single hair on my body stood on its’ end. These emotions created the same sensation I would feel on a first date, the same butterflies filling my stomach. For a moment I wasn’t feeling the fear of collapsing but felt ready to let go completely in his presence.

His hands moved over the arches of both of my shoulders back and forth in a massaging motion while squeezing them gently. I knew where this would end up going if I let this go on anymore. I spun around tearing his hands from me and faced him. This was the closest I had been to him since we last kissed at the party and I went back to that night mentally. I wasn’t thinking straight. I could just end up throwing myself willingly into his arms and lose myself.

No, that was not possible and could end up being a very foolish thing I could do to myself. Not only would I end up hating the things I’ve done and feeling a sense of remorse but I would end up dealing with more consequences than before. That would have to be something I was willing to sacrifice. There was a lot of things at risk especially my free will when it came to listening to my heart versus my mind.

He kept glaring over at me. I had to liberate from this point in time. I couldn’t think straight with him drilling blind into me. His breath and musk were intoxicating and stronger than ever after being deprived of it for some time. These were more than powerful suggestions as the raw attraction I had for him began to rise again.

“I have to go,” I declared. This deep-seated hold Mitch had over me was washing over me, and it was hard to fight against it. I wanted to give up and just kiss this man as much as I was kicking and screaming against its’ dynamic hold.

“You don’t have to.” His voice was pleading to me.

“No, that is where you are wrong. I do have to go. I am sorry, Mitch.”

I didn’t want to say goodbye because that would imply continuation, a future and that was something I wasn’t ready for. I needed some time to think away from Mitch’s intoxicating presence.

All I heard behind me was an exaggerated sigh as I shut the door behind me. Everything that just happened confirmed that this wasn’t over yet, and that frightened me.

I had to be brave.

First off let me say that I love this series and its author Kendall McKenna.  The first story was one of those novels that combined  all sorts of unusual elements (the Marines, Afghanistan, deployment, a unique shifter mate bond) and pulled them all together in a powerful story and beginning of a first series.  I adored it and so did tons of other readers.  I’ve followed it through the sequels and the love affair has continued.   Then came Heart of the Warrior and I have no idea what’s happened here.

Heart of the Warrior (The Tameness of the Wolf #4) by Kendall McKenna is really only a third to a half of a story and a fractured one at that.  Its the story/romance meeting of Terrell Hubbard, Marine sergeant and Staff Sergeant Kai Thayer, Pack Leader of the Camp Fallujah sippe (both characters we have meet in previous stories).  As with the other stories, a sniff sets the pair into motion but here its a flawed usage.  We get little feel for the characters. I think we are supposed to remember them more than we do but its been a while since the last story.  While Terrell is the strongest (in every way) MC in Heart of the Warrior and couple, Kai suffers from lack of time as a character present in the story here other than as a bed partner.  His character seems to shift from one personality to another or maybe because its just that we don’t know him that well.  Anyway the bond we feel towards the fleeting couple is limited because of the treatment he gets here.  He’s supposed to be an important Pack Leader of the Camp but we get no indication of that here, a flaw in the story that’s carried forward in the relationship.

Also this tale slides around, jumping ahead over apparently key scenes from previous stories you are supposed to have remembered if you’ve read the other stories.  If not you are completely out of luck and totally confused.  The battle scenes we drop in and out of?  Have no idea what’s going on.  Its one big mess.  And that’s unusual for this  series.  Its as though scenes from other novels were used here.  In fact, parts of this book feel more scrapped together than intentionally written.

The ending is perhaps the worse.  It just abruptly ends.  As if it was just a chapter in a much larger story.  But here it goes no further.

There’s not to say I didn’t enjoy parts of this story.  I did.  It holds promise as does this couple.  But you have to put the pieces together from a jumbled mess of a story.

Who should read this book?  I suppose those who are addicted to this series and need a fix.  You will get glimpses of your favorites couples.  But if you are new to this author and series.  Give this story a pass.  It does justice to neither.

I like the cover for the story.  Its terrific.  Wish I could say the same about the novel.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review: A Cowboy’s Home (Montana #3) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 3 stars out of  5

a-cowboys-home-by-rj-scottOne burned and broken man finds his way home. Can he find peace in the arms of a man easy to love?

Justin made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, battling domestic terrorism, never the man he really was, using hate to avenge the death of his best friend. The friend he’d killed.

What he doesn’t count on is getting shot, and if he’s going to die he wants it to be on Crooked Tree soil. Home.

Sam is as much a part of Crooked Tree as any of the families, and the offer to buy into the ranch is a dream come true. But falling for a hidden, secretive, injured man isn’t the way to keep his head in the game.
I’m thrilled that I was given the opportunity to read book three in this series for review. I loved book two so much I went back and read book one so I was more than ready for book three. I had high hopes that this would be even better than book two, which was full of action, danger, and intrigue. And though this book had action, most of it was in the telling of past events, and the potential intrigue and danger of Justin’s return home after a twelve-year absence was easily resolved and not suspenseful at all.

On the down side, there was quite a bit of time devoted to Justin’s inability to make up his mind about what he would do next, where he wanted to live, what he could safely share with others, and how unfit he was to share his life with another man, particularly Ben. And though they grew close while Justin was injured, once he left and later returned, he avoided Ben for reasons that were shaky at best, boring at worst.

I did have to suspend disbelief to get past how the mystery was cleared up, and I was so done with Ethan and Adam and their behaviors long before the big reveal. And that’s upsetting because I really like both men in book two. They were so strong and together, but in this one, Adam walked around like a zombie with Ethan as his protective mama. Justin’s father, Marcus, was totally cluelessness and had his head so far in the clouds (or in his own you know what!) that I could barely tolerate him. I just found that there was way too much time spent worrying and doubting and spinning in circles without accomplishing anything at all for much too much of the story.

So, sadly, this wasn’t on a par with the others, and certainly not as good as book two. I liked it, mostly because I was already invested in this group of people, but I really can’t see giving this one more than three stars.

Cover art by Meredith Russell depicts both good-looking MCs against an outdoors Montana background. The soft colors and artwork tie it to the others in the series.

A Caryn Review: The Eleventh Hour by Elin Gregory

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

the-eleventh-hour-by-elin-gregoryThis book has it all! Action, adventure, romance, spies, car chases, explosives, intrigue, cross-dressing…

Wait. What? Cross-dressing?

Yes indeedy. London, 1928. Ten years after the end of the Great War. An anarchist threat against the British Government foiled by a cross dressing linguistic specialist.

I loved it all. I was immediately drawn into this fast paced adventure where field agent Briers Allerdale teams up with linguistic agent Miles Siward to track down and neutralize the vicious terrorist Andrija. Briers has been stationed in the Balkans for years, and is one of the only men who’s ever seen Andrija’s face, and those of his comrades. He gathered intelligence that Andrija was on his way to London with his henchmen, but no one knows what Andrija has planned, or what his target is. They only know that Andrija’s girlfriend and co-conspirator has taken up a position as a nanny next door to a diplomat with the Foreign Office. With nothing else to go on, the home office decides to station Briers and Miles to do surveillance of Josephine and try to discover the rest of the plot. The catch? They must pose as a married couple in the rooming house across the street.

Although Miles hasn’t been an active field agent, he is a very talented actor, and the home office has used him to impersonate women in the past, though only for very minor and short missions. This mission will require him to be much more convincing on a longer term, as he needs to fool not only the people in the rooming house, but Andrija’s girlfriend as well. While Miles might be unassuming, his alter ego Millie is brash, brave, and intelligent, and more than up to the task. Briers is impressed first with Millie, but over time he recognizes that Miles is braver than he thought, equally clever, and worthy of respect. Affection grows between the two men, but their focus remains on the mission, on bringing down Andreja and saving England.

The book is, therefore, primarily an adventure. The romance is secondary, but I still enjoyed watching as Miles and Brier went from wary colleagues to casual lovers to a true couple. The descriptions of being gay at this time in England were very interesting, especially how men of the lavender persuasion went about finding other like minded men. Miles’ female impersonations, though necessary for national security, opened him up to ridicule and derision, and I loved how the author described his inner conflict of enjoying becoming his alter ego while concurrently being ashamed of enjoying it. Briers had a great deal of sensitivity about it as well, recognizing that Millie is actually an essential part of Miles.

Historical fiction buffs will love this, with the realistic trivia of daily life in interwar London. Action aficionados will love the car chase (high speed was less than 40 mph then!) and the sewer reconnaissance. Readers like me who enjoy character development will appreciate how two quite different men came to know and love each other. Highly recommended!

The cover art is different, murky.  Not sure what to think of it exactly.
