An Alisa Release Day Review: His Fairy Godfather by Cate Ashwood and Nico Jaye

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

his-fairy-godfather-by-cate-ashwoodSince the death of his father, Trick Grigsby has fought to keep his head above water. Following in his father’s footsteps as a talented architect, he hopes to work his way up at the firm. Unfortunately, the company’s new owner barely resembles the man who was once Trick’s father’s best friend. Trick’s days are filled with drudgery and cruel remarks from the man who was supposed to be his mentor—along with his two sons, whose only jobs seem to be making Trick’s life miserable.

But all that is about to change.

Edwin Goodmaker struggled through his fairy godparent curriculum, but his mother—the reigning Fairy Queen—has a simple solution: Edwin will go to New York City and get some practical experience. When he meets Trick, Edwin knows he’s found a worthy charge, and he’s sure he can help Trick achieve all of his heart’s desires. Edwin falls for Trick, but with everything standing in their way, a fairy-tale ending might remain nothing more than a dream.

This was an adorably sweet story.  Trick has been working himself to the bone for his father’s former business partner, trying to save up enough to own some of the business his father helped start.  Edwin has had some trouble completing his godparent lessons and his mother decides it’s best for him to get some practical experience.

Edwin meets Trick by chance when Trick save him from a taxi and immediately knows he is worthy of a godparent.  Edwin befriends Trick in order to help him, but it really takes his naivety and open smile for Trick to open up to another person.  Just as Trick begins to get all the things he is worthy of (his heart’s desire) he realizes that may not be what he really wants anymore.

This story is told from both characters’ points of view which makes it easier to connect with the characters.  I hated seeing how beaten Trick would feel during the work day and when he would go home for the evening.  Edwin is such a light to his world, I loved seeing their interactions and watching their relationship grow.

Cover art by Anna Sikorska is just as adorable as the story and is perfect.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have Tara Lain here today to talk about her latest release Cowboys Don’t Come Out. Welcome, Tara!

Ten Facts About Tara Lain’s Cowboys Don’t Come Out

Hi! I’m Tara Lain and I write the Beautiful Boys of Romance. I’m so delighted to be at Random Thoughts and Rogue Words today to celebrate the release of my new novel, Cowboys Don’t Come Out. This is a somewhat unusual book so I thought I’d share some fun facts about it with you –

  1. It’s a contemporary cowboy romance but it takes place mostly in Hawaii
  2. Hawaii had cowboys before the United States (Hawaii wasn’t a state then).
  3. The name for Hawaiian cowboys, paniolo, comes from the Hawaiian pronunciation of espaniol since the original paniolos were Mexican vaqueros. One of my heroes is a paniolo.
  4. Most of the story takes place in Hana, which is on the far side of Maui and can only be reached by driving the “long and winding road”, which takes hours, or by small plane, or by boat.
  5. Both of my heroes love to dance, especially two-step, and that’s how they meet
  6. During the story, the heroes visit some fun sights on the island such as the town of Makawao and the Seven Sacred Pools, so the reader gets to go too.
  7. The Seven Sacred Pools aren’t seven and aren’t sacred! They are, however, very beautiful and worth seeing.
  8. Beyond the pools is the most amazing bamboo forest and my heroes have sex in that forest!  LOL
  9. For this book, I had to learn a whole lot about child custody laws
  10. Since the story takes place on a Christmas vacation, I think you can call it a holiday story!

I hope you enjoyed my Facts. Here’s an excerpt –

Excerpt — Cowboys Don’t Come Out by Tara Lain

Rand McIntyre settles for good enough. He loves his small California ranch, raising horses, and teaching riding to the kids he adores—but having kids of his own and someone to love means coming out, and that would jeopardize everything he’s built. Then, despite his terror of flying, he goes on a holiday to Hana, Hawaii with his parents and meets the dark and mysterious Kai Kealoha, a genuine Hawaiian cowboy. Rand takes to Kai’s kid brother and sister as much as he drools over Kai, but the guy sports more prickles than a horned toad, and more secrets than the exotic land he comes from.

Kai’s earned his privacy and lives to protect his “kids.” He ought to stay away from the big, handsome cowboy for everyone’s sake—but since the guy’s just a haole on a short vacation, how much damage can he do? When all of Kai’s worst fears and Rand’s darkest nightmares come true at once, there’s not much chance for two cowboys who can’t—or won’t—come out.

By now the place was jumping. People had been squeezing into the cracks ever since they arrived, and the music clearly signaled dancing time. Couples bopped out onto the floor and the Texas two-step, Hawaiian style, began.

Rand slugged back a mouthful of beer. “You wanna?”

“You can dance? Hell yes.”

She was out of the booth and onto the floor in record time. Apparently she didn’t get enough dancing. She’s come to the right place. Dancing R Us. He took her in the semiclose two-step hold and set off onto the floor.

After a couple of twirls and close-hold side-by-sides, she grinned up at him. “You really can dance.”

“As advertised.” That might be the only thing about him that was.

A few people had come to the edge of the dance floor and were clapping Rand and Julie on. Rand released his inner exhibitionist and put on a little show. Julie had no problem keeping up. Suddenly a loud whistle cut through the music, and someone yelled, “Go Kai!”

Rand looked around and saw a guy dancing with a pretty redhead. Whoa. Maybe he should say a pretty guy dancing with a redhead—tallish, lean, with caramel skin that glowed in the soft light, and below-the-ear-length black hair that swayed under his cowboy hat as he danced. And shit, could that guy dance. Graceful, sure-footed, and sexy. Holy hell.

“Hey, can’t stand the competition?”

“What?” Julie grinned at him. Damn, he’d stopped dancing to watch. “Oh, hell no.”

The band segued into something far more up-tempo and fiddle-based. Most of the dancers gave up, but not the beautiful guy. He just stepped it up and out, twirling his partner across the floor. Rand took up the gauntlet, adding in some line-dance steps. Julie picked it up fast, and they held their own. Rand glanced at the other couple and got a stare from Mr. Gorgeous, who filled out his jeans like sin in blue denim, his ass rounding the back and worn fabric cupping his package in front. Stop looking, asshole, before you get a very embarrassing boner.

An Alisa Advent Calendar Review Day 8: Of Mooning Santas and Penis Lights by Thianna Durston

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

of-mooning-santas-and-penis-lightsFormer US Marine John Ving hates everything about holiday displays: they’re tacky, they waste energy, and they’re an eyesore. So what does his new neighbor do? He sets up the holiday spectacle from hell, and he doesn’t seem to care which holiday—he has a menorah, a baby Jesus, a Santa, and everything in between. Not to mention it’s swathed in enough lights his house is probably visible from space.

High-school teacher Kaden Melling loves the holidays, and huge light displays on his lawn make his heart glow. He’d love to share some cheer—and maybe some kinky fun—with his smoking hot neighbor John. Odd things start to happen to his displays, but just as he begins to think life is going his way, with the holidays and with John, a Grinch destroys everything.

It’s gonna take the display-hating John to set things right—and what he has planned might blow Kaden’s mind.

John hates the holidays, but gets forced into decorating his own house when he loses a game to his nephew.  For the first time in years he actually puts a tree up when his nephews end up staying with him for a few days.  It takes a visit from his ex to realize what it is he really didn’t like about the holidays.

Kaden is absolutely adorable and trying to keep his mother’s spirit alive with decorating and baking for the holidays.  His brightness melts John a bit and I love how John is able to let his walls down for Kaden.  I hurt for Kaden when someone steals his decorations and stomps on his Christmas spirit, but John won’t let that stop Kaden from having the Christmas he deserves.

Once Upon a Time in the Weird West
by Langley Hyde , Astrid Amara , Ginn Hale , Nicole Kimberling ,
C.S. Poe, Lex Chase , Venona Keyes , Tali Spence

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have  Venona Keyes here today to talk about her short story and the inspiration behind it in the Dreamspinner anthology Once Upon a Time in the Weird West.  Welcome, Venona!

~

Short Story Title: POMH byVenona Keyes

When people ask, “What inspired you to write this story?” It’s usually a song or a human interest  story or a news event.  For the Weird West, my inspiration was the movie Bicentennial Man and The Jetsons. Really? In a steam-punky inspired story, I drew upon those things? Yes, in an old fashioned way.

A re-imagined West, one where a new mechanical revolution was the norm. Tracks laid down  by steam powered machines; built not just for a train, but for individual carriages or wagon carriages. I could see people zooming by (actually steaming by), to escape the confines of the crowded and polluted East, to conquer the wild open spaces of the West. To spread out and make a fortune, or a better life.
Inventors were key to this expansion. They were much like what blacksmiths were back in the day; a valuable member of the community who helped build the community with metal items.  Inventors in this west make mechanical items while the blacksmiths still made metal items; horseshoes, wagon wheels, hinges, door knockers, and weapons.

Inventors were the craftsman of machines that made life easier.  No matter where you were on the economic ladder, you had at least one item made by an inventor.   Some of these items were steam-powered baby prams,  child corrallers, tree fruit harvesters, and horseless carriages to name a few.  As you got up in the social and monied classes, the disposable income went to a more frivolous or luxurious type item, like gilded mechanical flying birds, encrusted with jewels and ivory. The ingenuity of the item was only limited by the imagination of the inventor.
In POMH, the main character, Lorem Farcome, is in dire need of an assistant. He no longer wants a human assistant, but one that is steam powered.  He dreamed and designed it, and with a find of a rare prism, he can make his dream come true.  Jealousy and envy prove to be a big stumbling blocks, as another, more monied and more powerful inventor has his sights on taking the creation, Pomh, from Lorem.

Have you ever had a dream come true, and was the path to the dream an easy or hard one?  Or, what has inspired you to achieve something you always wanted to do, and you did it?  Comment to enter into the Rafflecopter!

POHM Blurb:

Lorem Farcome makes inventions that cater to the working class. He dreams of a lost chance in love and a lost apprentice. The lost love he can do nothing about, but an apprentice, he can surely build. With a rare red prism, Lorem creates and animates his assistant, dubbing him “Pomh.” The road never runs smooth, and a wealthy and powerful competitor, Markus Reighn, accuses Lorem of stealing the red prism and claims Lorem’s mechanical man for himself. But an odd-looking

About Once Upon a Time in the Weird West Anthology

This isn’t the same old Wild West. The usual suspects are all present: cowboys, outlaws, and sheriffs. There’s plenty of dust, tumbleweeds, horses, and cattle on the range, but there are also magical gems, automatons, elementals, airships… even dinosaurs and genetically modified insects. Roaming among the buffalo and coyotes, you’ll encounter skinwalkers, mad engineers, mythical beings cloaked in darkness, and lovers who stay true to their oaths… even beyond the grave. On this frontier are those at the mercy of their own elaborate devices as well as men whose control of time and space provides a present-day vision of the West. There might even be a dragon hidden amongst the ghost towns and wagon trains.

If you like your Westerns with a splash of magic, a touch of steampunk, and plenty of passionate romance between men, these genre-bending tales will exceed expectations.

Hold on to your hats, cowboys and cowgirls. The West is about to get weird, and you’re in for a hell of a ride.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: The Unlikely Prospect (States of Love) by Lex Chase

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

the-unlikely-prospect-by-lex-chaseIn Prospect Harbor, Maine, lobsterman Harper Cook has always loved the sea. He and his two brothers work the harbor waters, in a fishing village of one thousand where everybody knows everybody else’s business and nobody wants to be different.

When it’s time for the annual Men of Maine pinup calendar, Harper’s brothers eagerly volunteer him. Harper isn’t thrilled to bare it all to raise money for an elementary school playground—until he meets out-and-proud Los Angeles out-a-statah Sean Blackburn: the highly available first-grade teacher with Hollywood heartthrob looks.

Harper has no desire to ever stand out from the crowd, but Sean persists and earns Harper’s friendship. Through Sean, Harper opens up to new possibilities. Things get steamy, but Harper still protects his heart. Though the right pressure in the right place might crack even a loner lobsterman out of his shell.

States of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the United States.

I flat out adored this story. The Unlikely Prospect (States of Love) by Lex Chase just blew me away, from the manner in which Chase got inside the character of lobsterman Harper Cook, introverted, gay and an amazing gift of a person just waiting for the right man to understand and appreciate him.  From his halting Maine speech, which could sound cliche’ but doesn’t, to his boisterous brothers  who only want the best for him, Harper strides off his boat and into our hearts almost from the first introduction.  And from there, Chase proceeds to peel back even more layers to reveal someone with a vivid imagination who writes stories and has a bravery to match that of the sea he loves.  Harper just continues to grow throughout this story until he’s this quiet giant of a man.

While Sean Blackburn near quite rises to the level (in my mind) that Harper does as far as character build, he’s still marvelous and a terrific complement to the quiet lobsterman.  He too has a backstory with enough depth to give him the layers needed  to make him the right man for Harper.  His strengths and needs fill the holes in Harper.  Chase has made that so clear, not only to the reader but to Harper’s brothers as well.  Its fun to watch the maneuverings and family dynamics here.  Add in this mix an engaging teacher with a thing for a certain Mr. December and it turns into one of the most heartwarming stories I’ve enjoyed in a while.

And that calendar shoot?  A sexy and fun scene all its own.  It was the start of their relationship, a place where boldness and surprise are key elements. Loved that too!  Harper and Sean’s developing romance contains its own beautiful twists and turns that made this story all the more enjoyable.

I fell so in love with Harper and Sean that I wouldn’t mind a sequel to see what happens next.  But if that never happens, I’m thrilled with their story here.  Want a story to fill your heart with romance and love?  Grab up The Unlikely Prospect (States of Love) by Lex Chase.  Its one I highly recommend.

Cover art by Reese Dante is as perfect as the book.  From the characters to the boat, its superb.

A Lila Release Day Review: Cowboys Don’t Come Out by Tara Lain

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

cowboys-dont-come-out-by-tara-lainRand McIntyre settles for good enough. He loves his small California ranch, raising horses, and teaching riding to the kids he adores—but having kids of his own and someone to love means coming out, and that would jeopardize everything he’s built. Then, despite his terror of flying, he goes on a holiday to Hana, Hawaii, with his parents and meets the dark and mysterious Kai Kealoha, a genuine Hawaiian cowboy. When all of Kai’s worst fears and Rand’s darkest nightmares come true at once, there’s not much chance for two cowboys who can’t—or won’t—come out.

Cowboys Don’t Come Out is a different type of cowboy story. Californian cowboys are common in romance books, but a Hawaiian cowboy, a paniolo, was an interesting addition. We don’t get to see Kai in a ranching environment, but the guiding expeditions he offered gave the reader a little inside about his riding style. Together with the background and cultural information provided through the story.

The beginning of the book is slow and it takes some time to get into it, but in the end, the wait is worth it. As always, the author did an excellent story describing the settings and giving us a tour of the area; showing us exactly what the characters saw and their reactions to their surroundings—from Kai’s modest home to the beautiful Hawaiian views.

I liked Rand’s & Kai’s dancing duels and how good they were together. I enjoyed how they interacted as a family when the kids were with them. They might be from different backgrounds, but their differences merged well. I do think Rand was too young for the way he acted. I wished he has at least in his early thirties.

The story has many supporting and secondary characters, but Mrs. O was my favorite. Her relationship with Rand worked for me. There are many events during the story in which the reader needs to suspend disbelief, but overall, they gave the book an air of separation from reality. Almost like glazed-view of contemporary events. This is a story for fans of Tara Lain’s over-the-top plot lines.

The cover by Reese Dante shows a bare-chested Rand with a faint view of Hawaii in the background. It’s nice, but a bit generic.

A Stella Advent Calendar Review Day 7: The Stockings Were Hung by Cassie Sweet

RATING: 3.5 out of 5 stars

the-stockings-were-hungHill hates Christmas.

The shoppers. The cheer. The drama. All of it.

Each holiday season is a painful reminder that seven years before, his lover, Drew, walked out of his life and moved across the country, leaving Hill like a cup of rotten eggnog. Now Drew is back and wants Hill to put a little jingle in his bells. Well, not this Scrooge.

Drew admits he moved to get away from Hill—but not for the reasons Drew gave him all those years ago. Some of his best memories are of Christmases he celebrated with Hill, and he wants nothing more than to spend a little holly jolly with the only man he’s ever loved. However, getting Hill to agree to a reunion is going to take a Christmas miracle.

I’m a huge fan of “second chance at love” stories so I was very enthusiastic to read The Stockings Were Hung by Cassie Sweet. And I liked it, it was my first book by this author and I already have my eyes on a couple of stories by her. I found this new holiday release engaging with well defined characters, even the secondary ones, plus a too cute dog. It could have easily been the perfect story, the one with all the elements I enjoy reading about. There was just a couple of problems: first of all, I struggled to connect with Drew and understand his reasons for leaving Hill seven years before (and he took his time to come back and say he’s still in love with Hill). Then the MCs didn’t really end up together, it was clear it was going to happen but it’s not actually on page. And I wanted to see them together, I would have preferred even just a couple of scenes more, it left me a little disappointed. That said, The Stockings Were Hung is a good holiday story and I wanted to reward the writing part with my rating.

The cover art by L.C. Chase is very sweet.

An Alisa Release Day Review: Seven Minutes by Grace Kilian Delaney

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

seven-minutesCan love be found in seven minutes?

Heavy metal singer Stone Manson never acknowledged his attraction to men. But when he meets sexy cross-dresser Devon at a party and spends Seven Minutes in Heaven with him, he can’t deny his reaction. His confusion leads him to mess up—big time—with Devon, but after some soul-searching, Stone decides to do whatever it takes to show Devon he’s worth the risk.

Devon’s got a thing for hot, tattooed rock stars—just not the sexually conflicted and closeted ones.

Stone’s persistence has Devon warming up to the idea of the singer in his bed, and maybe even in his life, until a threat emerges from Devon’s past. Now it’s Devon’s turn to trust Stone or both their lives could be in jeopardy.

Stone has been pretty depressed since his girlfriend left him months ago and he wants to be anywhere other than the party his best friend has dragged him to.  He is attracted to Devon, but only acts on it when they are pushed together.  After the party Stone hurts Devon in his own confusion of his feelings and has to work through them.

I liked both of these characters.  Stone is a rock star and is conflicted about what he wants in his life and Devon knows exactly what he wants; to work on classic cars, dress in women’s clothes occasionally and someone to love him no matter what.  I could feel how hurt Devon was when Stone pushed him away, but he is still willing to give Stone a chance when he proves he will be better.  It’s amazing how once Stone puts his mind to something he is willing to take the plunge.

Cover art by Reese Dante is wonderful and give us a nice visual of Stone.

A Lila Release Day Review: Hell Takes a Holiday By Kiernan Kelly

Rating: 3 stars out of  5

hell-takes-a-holidayDespite a major setback, Lucifer has no time to feel sorry for himself. Running Hell is a monumental task, even though he’s taken steps to modernize it with technology like closed-circuit cameras and security systems.

As he struggles with his infernal issues, an unannounced visitor threatens to break his black heart. Lucifer hasn’t seen Uriel since his Fall, but he remembers how much he loved Uriel and how betrayed he felt when Uriel didn’t stand with him during the War.

Uriel has been sent to inspect the changes Lucifer has made and report back to Heaven. Lucifer has no choice but to give Uriel a guided tour of the Nine Circles, and all the feelings come rushing back.

Uriel hasn’t forgotten Lucifer either, and they pick up where they left off—with enough sizzle to rival the hottest of hell’s fires. But their reunion will be short-lived, unless Uriel relinquishes his halo—which Lucifer is unwilling to let him do.

Hell Takes a Holiday has a great premise. I love the idea of Uriel visiting Hell to “spy” on his ex-lover. It starts really interesting and I like the way they get to see each other for the first time in centuries. Their chemistry is palpable, and their internal monologues and witty banter very nice.

Unfortunately, after that, the story takes a preachy tone that drowns their conversations. Uriel goes from flirt into total drama quickly, killing the mood. Yes, their smexy times are hot, but not enough to compensate the knowledge overload. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with 90% of Luce’s explanations, but it was too much for such a short story.

The only relation to a holiday the story has it’s the mention of the events taking place on Christmas Eve. I find the ending too perfect to work overall. I wanted a bit of plot mix with the explanations to get me to cheer for their HEA.

The one thing this story has is great characters. Uriel and Luce are perfect individually, but even better together. And God has a great sense of humor too. Perhaps I expected more since this is the second edition of this story.

The cover by Bree Archer is nice, but the models don’t fit Luce’s & Uriel’s descriptions.

An Alisa Advent Calendar Day 6 Review: Matthew’s Present (2016 Advent Calendar – Bah Humbug) by Sarah Hadley Brook

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

matthews-presentMatthew Blick is almost thirty years old, and he hates the thought of another holiday alone. He has become a bit of a wet blanket when Christmas rolls around every year. So much so that even his five-year-old niece, Hannah, knows something needs to change. She asks the department store Santa to bring her uncle a man to love, and when Santa sees her uncle, he formulates a plan to set that possibility in motion.

Santa shows up at Matthew’s house and at first Matthew can’t place him, but then the memories of his first kiss flood his mind and he is shocked to find that Santa is the man he has carried a torch for since high school. Will this twist of fate help Matthew change his view on the holidays? Only a kiss can tell.

This was such a sweet story.  Matthew was hurt badly by his college boyfriend and since he hasn’t felt the Christmas spirit since.  He can’t help but keep thinking of Santa from the store and how much his eyes called to him.

These characters are so sweet, both having thought about the other for years without being able to find out who the other was.  Them unexpectedly meeting like this is really one of those meant to be things and gives them both a chance for the love they have always wanted.  This is one of those stories that has a nice HFN ending, but it would have been great to see a glimpse of their future.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is the collection cover, still wonderful.
