A MelanieM Advent Story Review: Whispers of Old Winds by George Seaton

After Sam returns home from two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, he moves to the Colorado mountains, where he hopes to begin a new life with his husband, Michael. Sam becomes the sheriff of sparsely populated Pine County, while Michael opens a curio shop for tourists where he sells his art. When Sam and his deputy attempt to rescue a body from a dangerously fragile mountainside snowpack, Sam’s perception of the world, his husband, and the veracity of truths whispered in old winds, are called into question.

It was the title that drew me to this story. Whispers of Old Winds promised something magical and ancient and that’s exactly what George Seaton delivered along with an established romance and mysticism in the Colorado mountains.

Sam and Michael’s back history is delivered in nice brief glimpses throughout this short story. We see how they met, and tiny moments from their previous lives, including Sam’s tours of duty where he saw things he couldn’t quite bring himself to believe. Now married and the sheriff of a quiet Colorado town, a call to rescue someone (dead or alive) from an area to be avoided at all costs brings the supernatural back into Sam and Michael’s world. Or maybe its been there all along.

Seaton’s story is far larger than the 38 pages listed. Its full of native american mythology, shapeshifters, and worlds far beyond the mundane we see around us. The author’s writing is so beautifully plotted and vividly described that he pulls us so smoothly into the lives of his characters and the events that are occurring that when the action starts we are jarred out of our complacency along with the characters.

The characterizations are wonderful, especially those of Sam, Digger (the naive Deputy) and Hank Tall Horse, the old Ute Indian so central to the story. Michael is more vague, but I wonder if that wasn’t on purpose, especially given the ending of the story. There is so much here that it would be a shame for the author not to continue on, to bring them all back for a larger book that they call cry out for. That is the only reason for the less than perfect rating, a feeling that things were left undone, unsettled and maybe a bit shaky.

Several of the advent stories have their own covers. How I wish this had been one of them. It deserved it. I highly recommend this story. Its unusual and quite wonderful.

Being evacuated from his apartment in the middle of the night because some idiot forgot his cookies in the oven isn’t the ideal way to meet a guy, but Mason’s hot neighbor Cole sure looks great in his underwear. The trouble is, Mason is the idiot who started the fire, and Cole doesn’t appreciate being lied to any more than he appreciates being driven out into the cold. It looks like their romance might end before it gets started, but Christmas is a time for second chances….

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2015 Advent Calendar package “Sleigh Ride”.

In Leap Through Eternity, Sara Stark has written a sweet confection of a story for the holidays. Mason is tall, adorable, holiday happy and a great cook, although not terribly focused, which can be a not so wonderful combination in the kitchen when he sets things on fire, like Christmas cookies.

Cole is a police officer misplaced by a fire in his apartment building. Cole’s not that crazy about Christmas. We never doubt that the two will get together. Its a Christmas story, it all but glitters.

The author’s descriptions sparkle, her characters come to life on the pages and if the path to love is instantaneous, well, blame it on the eggnog and the holidays. At 26 pages, Cole and Mason are adorable. Mason is the more well developed of the two characters but Cole is engaging to the point we love them both. It was a quick read and I enjoyed every word. You will too. What fun I’m having with the Advent stories!

A MelanieM Advent Story Review: Christmas Miracles of a Recently Fallen Spruce by Brandon Witt

Paxton Peterson’s favorite day of the year is his annual Gay Boy Christmas dinner. He’s checked and double-checked his to-do list, because nothing stresses him out like the unexpected. Confident everything will run smoothly, Paxton embarks on his yearly snowshoed hike through the Rocky Mountains near his home. His perfectly planned evening is cut short by Logan Charles’s careless enjoyment of his brother’s snowmobile, and Paxton is stranded in the woods. It’s the worst thing that could’ve possibly happened to him—or maybe the best.

Christmas Miracles of a Recently Fallen Spruce by Brandon Witt was that unexpected present you find under the tree, the one you have no idea what’s inside from the shape or in this case the title. What Brandon Witt delivers is a delightful tale of a annual hike gone wrong when he gets hit by a snowmobile. The characterizations are realistic, the scenes beautifully rendered, glowing yet natural, and the men funny and real.

I so wanted to spend more time with them and to see what happened as the door shut behind them. No instant love, nothing more remarkable than a new connection that sparkles and might turn into something wonderful for the future. I loved this story and hope that the author will take this couple and revisit them in the future.

Love Christmas stories but without a lot of sweetness or holiday overtones? This is the one for you.

A Mika Review: Fish Stick Fridays (Half Moon Bay #1) by Rhys Ford

Staring down a family history of bad decisions and reaped consequences, Deacon cashes in everything he owns, purchases an auto shop in Half Moon Bay, and takes his niece, Zig, far away from the drug dens and murderous streets they grew up on. Zig deserves a better life than what he had, and Deacon is determined to give it to her.

Lang Harris is stunned when Zig, a little girl in combat boots and a purple tutu blows into his bookstore, and then he’s left speechless when her uncle, Deacon Reid walks in, hot on her heels. Lang always played it safe but Deacon tempts him to step over the line… just a little bit.

More than a little bit. And Lang is willing to be tempted.

Unfortunately, Zig isn’t the only bit of chaos dropped into Half Moon Bay. Violence and death strikes leaving Deacon scrambling to fight off a killer before he loses not only Zig but Lang too.

I wonder if Rhys Ford has a magic chair that she sits in at home to churn out these 5-star books and characters. I mean I expected nothing less, but a couple of months ago when she announced that she had a new series starting I was elated. I mean, c’mon. everyone knows how I feel about Cole and Jae; they are my heart. She announced a new series, and a freaking kid was a main character. I was down for it. I love children in my stories. Their age adds an extra layer of vulnerability to the characters.

This book was everything and more that I could ever ask for. I am swooning for Deke! He’s amazing. He hasn’t had an easy life, and anybody’s that went through what he did would understand if he decided to be selfish and only look out for himself. His lack of parents, the fast life he grew up in couldn’t prepare him for caring for his 8 year old niece Bobo Zigfried! She’s a tornado wrapped in a hurricane. Full of life, love, adoration and kind of a cynic to be so young. Right from the beginning its full of action! I love the dynamics between Deke and Zig they are the coolest people that I like I’ve read from the author to date.

Lang is a freaking sweetheart in his own way! I think Rhys Ford did a good job with combining the two mc’s past histories together. This wasn’t her usual buildup of love between two guys. Dare to say it, but I totally got the insta-love feeling without the cheesiness that goes with it. I kind of see them as a love as first sight kind of thing. I mean the descriptions about one another were so endearing, and sweet. This is definitely a favorite of mine, and I cannot wait until the next in the series. This is the perfect family that Rhys Ford throws together!

Cover Art by Reece Notley:This might be my favorite cover from this artist. They are teasing us by not showing Deacon’s entire face, but everything else that is important to his person is there. Loved the color schemes for the cover. The motorcycle definitely rocks.

A MelanieM Advent Story Review: Fireworks and Resolutions by Leandra Dohman

Something big happened at the office Christmas party between Joseph and Carter, his coworker and ultimate crush. Too bad Joseph doesn’t remember it. Now, it’s New Years Eve, and Joseph finds himself locked in the bathroom with Carter. Joseph doesn’t understand why his natural confidence fizzles out whenever Carter is around, but the man reduces him to an awkward mess. If he can just find the courage to be himself, there might be more fireworks in his future than the ones they watch from the balcony.

Fireworks and Resolutions by Leandra Dohman is short, cute and very like a Christmas sugar cookie. Its very much like you would expect and yet you are so happy to see it and it tastes so good.

Leandra Dohman takes the holiday office party and gives it a sweet happy ending instead of the smarmy, regretful one it normally gets. Cute and awkward meets tall and handsome but it works, you find it sweet and adorable and yes, the ending is full of fireworks.

I liked the characters, the scenes really do move very quickly and the story is over in a snap or should that be in a blink of an eye. If you like holiday stories, you will like this little romance.

A MelanieM Review: Northern Lights by Asta Idonea

A dream romantic vacation to Iceland to see the Northern Lights turns into a nightmare when James’s workaholic boyfriend, Richard, again insists on putting his work first. After a call from Richard’s office, an argument ends with the couple splitting up for good. Not only has Richard left James, he’s left him abandoned to explore the park alone, where James quickly gets lost. But just when things seem darkest, the Solstice works its magic, and James finds the guiding light he needs. Or it finds him.

Northern Lights by Asta Idonea was a lovely way for me to dive into this collection. Asta Idonea brought so many delightful elements to this holiday short story. A heartbroken man left by his long term partner in Iceland when an argument turns into a breakup that should have happened long before now. Now James has to face an uncertain future on every front, no home, no stability, no partner and even the likelihood of not enough income to support himself. All while he’s in a place he always wanted to see and photograph.

The author makes us feel James’s fear and while not exactly pain, the knowledge that he knew this was coming and the hurt that carries with it. And as James tries to pick himself up and travel around to places in and around Reykjavik, we get to hike along with him, delighting in the discoveries he finds as he goes and the despair he feels when reality intrudes. The author’s descriptions are wonderful and inviting and it gets even better as disaster strikes James and his path changes for the better.

Northern Lights is full of the old traditions and old gods, the beauty of the Northern Lights and a path to a new future that can open up when you least expect it. At 29 pages, I would have loved more of the setting and couple, but what I got set the mood perfectly for the first day of December and the holiday season. And yes it made me want to grab a plane to Reykjavik, not for the first time either. I recommend this story and I need to explore this author’s writing more as well. Happy Reading!

A Mika Review: Breakaway (Scoring Chances #1) by Avon Gale

Drafted to play for the Jacksonville Sea Storm, an NHL affiliate, twenty-year-old Lane Courtnall’s future looks bright, apart from the awkwardness he feels as a gay man playing on a minor league hockey team. He’s put his foot in his mouth a few times and alienated his teammates. Then, during a rivalry game, Lane throws off his gloves against Jared Shore, enforcer for the Savannah Renegades. It’s a strange way to begin a relationship.

Jared’s been playing minor league hockey for most of his career. He’s bisexual and doesn’t care if anyone knows. But he’s determined to avoid another love affair after the last one left him devastated. Out of nowhere a one-nighter with rookie Lane Courtnall gives him second thoughts. Lane reminds Jared why he loves the game and why love might be worth the risk. In turn, Jared hopes to show Lane how to be comfortable with himself on and off the ice. But they’re at different points in their careers, and both men will have to decide what they value most.

Clueless, sincere, and adorable. Those are the three words I would use to describe Lane Courtnall!!! I have a semi crush on him. Gawd he’s perfect, his naivety is so freaking adorable. I liked him a lot from the very beginning. I liked Jared as well, and I was happy how his character and Lane’s were able to mesh perfectly together. I really liked the story, the pacing as well as the writing. This is my first book by Avon Gale, and it will never be my last. I requested this book on the whim of all the great things that I’ve heard about her books. I’ve yet to read Let the Wrong Light In. I am going to wait as long as I can to. I’ve had it since it was released and it’s going on my holiday break to read.

If I can have one book wish, I would wish for Avon Gale’s Lane and T.J. Klune’s Gus to be in a book together!!! Total awesomeness is what that would be. I’m not a hockey fan at all. Sure I live in a hockey city, but it’s something I don’t understand. I really liked that she was true to her subject. I wasn’t as lost as I would have thought I would be. Avon did a really good job between the love of the mc’s and the game that they both love.

I completely read this book in one sitting. I liked the Teen Wolf reference; I loved Zoe as a character. She is a strong female secondary character. Both guys dealt with problems from their childhoods, and they kind of bonded over being solidarity creatures in their adult life. They thrive on being apart of a team. Together is better for these two, and I really appreciated how they were able to fall in love. I like grand gestures, and of course the support of being in a relationship; so I was really happy that Jared was able to find his happiness. I’m super excited for book two because Riley interests me a ton, and Ethan just seems like this great protector. I’m already gushing for book two.

Cover Art by Aaron Anderson: I think this cover is fantastic for sports fans; it’s nice to see to opposing teams fall in love. Definitely liked the lighting.

A Stella Review: If I Were Fire by Heloise West

In 18th century Siena, Count Salvesto Masello returns home to find the family villa and his father’s estate deeply in debt. In order to save it, he sells valuable heirlooms, but he is running out of silverware. Somewhere in the villa, his deceased father has hidden the art treasures that will pay the debt—but Salvesto can’t find them anywhere.

Amadeo Neruccio has been on the run from the vicious pimp, thief, and pawnbroker Guelfetto, whose toughs finally catch him and bring him to the cellar where Count Masello is selling off his silver. When the count learns what fate Guelfetto has in store for Amadeo, he intervenes, and trades the last of his mother’s dowry for the young man’s freedom.

Salvesto left home over ten years ago to live the life of adventure he craved and leave his broken heart behind. When he rescues Amadeo, he does not expect to find love again—or the start of his next adventure.

I picked this short by Heloise West, a new author for me, because as it was set in Italy, I couldn’t say no. It was delightful reading, really well done.

The story between Salvesto and Amedeo takes place in the Siena of the 18th century.

Salvesto Masello has just become Conte, he inherited the last villa among his father’s possessions and all its debts. He is having serious financial problems and while selling his silvers to try and save the failure his father made, he meets a young man who is being beaten almost to death.

Amadeo Neruccio has been betrayed and abandoned by his family and now he is going to be sold at a bathhouse. Can Selvesto save him from his destiny?

I admit I didn’t expect to love this story so much, because at first I found it hard to read, something in the writing style made me sweat a little but later I understood was just my limit with the language. What I particularly enjoyed was the atmosphere Heloise created, she got all the smells, the olives, the grapes, the rosemary and lavender plants and foods in general. I was able to appreciate the characters, the secondary ones too, and for a short like this, I found them to be quite developed. I would have just preferred more scenes between the MCs and their romantic relationship.

If I Were Fire is just fifty-nine pages but there was a great work behind the short length. I’m not great at history but what I recall fits the setting of this story. The rivalry between Florence and Siena, the underworld life made of illicit activities. The strong faith in Santa Caterina. The characters names and surnames, the places. I loved it was specific in every little detail, things were never hinted, always clear in the references that indicate a thorough and careful research, from the first sentence.

And when I realized she titled this story like a Cecco Angiolieri poem, S’i’ fosse foco, she won me over.

COVER ART by L.C. Chase. It fits the historical theme. It is well done and the Sienese elements are very appreciated.
