BLURB

Disgraced FBI agent Nick Truman has failed to save his sister, held hostage by a drug cartel until he could give them Alex Crow, who eluded him. His epic downfall lands him in witness protection, where he plays by the rules and keeps to himself. But the murder of his neighbor brings danger to his door. He unexpectedly finds himself the champion of innocents and helplessly attracted to the homicide detective in charge of the case.

This can’t end well.

Homicide Detective Hank Axelrod is good at digging out secrets, maybe because he hides a big one of his own. He also suspects his husband has one foot out of the door of their marriage and the specter of single life looms unpleasantly on the horizon.

A murder resembling another brings Nick into his world, a man who claims to be a mystery writer looking for a real life resource. Hank’s instincts say he’s more than that, and he’s rarely wrong.

Torn between the errant soon-to-be-ex husband and the distracting, sexy stranger, Hank needs to focus all his attention on his murder case before he becomes the next victim.

EXCERPT

It was different when he’d wanted information from Nick. Hank wanted to confide in Nick, like with the partner he used to have before he got stuck with Burgess. Like Nick knew what he was talking about—could be trusted.

“Are you a cop?”

Nick touched his fingers to his mouth. He must have needed a cigarette, if the telltale scent of tobacco was any indication. “I answered that one already. Nope.”

That nope was annoying. “Fed? PI? Security?” Hank threw out a few more. “Reporter? Work for the criminal court?”

“I drive limos,” Nick said with a languid shrug. Glancing over his shoulder at the impatient date, he held up two fingers.

“Oh, a fan, are you? Watch CSI, NCIS—a lookie-loo?”

By the tightening of his mouth into a sneer, that pissed Nick off. “I’m no cop wannabe. I don’t watch the idiot box.”

Well, shit. The pain in Nick St. Cloud’s brown eyes was real. Deep. Hank gave him a minute to recover, watching him rub his wrists, then naked arms. It gave Hank a thrill, as if he could feel the man’s heated skin on his own.

“Don’t be a bastard, Detective.”

“Well? I can run a background check on you in a heartbeat.”

Nick tried to hide it, but a flare of panic made his pupils dilate. “And if I say I’m not that extremely guilty guy who hangs around helping the know-nothing cops, you’ll believe me?”

“You’re something. What is it, I wonder?”

Don’t tease the cat, Hank.

“Okay.” A bead of sweat dripped past a pale white scar at his hairline, the only imperfection Hank could see. “I’m a writer, not a journalist. I mean, I’m a mystery writer.”

“Published?”

“Nope, not yet. So maybe you can be a resource, you know? I can do a ride-along with you or something.” Nick looked away, back toward Probably and gave him a nod. Probably picked up his sweater from the back of the chair and stood.

“Sure,” Hank agreed.

“Wait, what—really?”

Hank held still a moment, beer glass halfway to his mouth, unsure what he was seeing in Nick’s intelligent eyes. Hope? Excitement? Fear? “We can talk about procedure—I’ve got some good stories. But I don’t know about the ride-along at this point. My partner’s a prick.”

“But we can meet…and talk.” Nick stood and dug into his pocket for his wallet.

“I’ve got this.” Hank waved it away. “You want the book to be accurate, right? It’s good PR too.”

Nick’s smile curled Hank’s toes.

“On me next time. We can meet here or wherever.” Nick hovered, as if Hank had held out something sweet to him, and he was afraid to take it.

Probably cleared his throat loudly.

“Have a good night, Nick,” Hank said. “We’ll talk. You have my number.”

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Friendly Fire by Cari Z and Nick J. Russo (Narrator)

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

I really enjoyed the narration of this audiobook by Nick J. Russo.  I say that up front because listening to the story unfold is always a different experience from reading the book, and in the hands of a talented and experienced narrator, an average or above average story can be even more enjoyable. That’s the case here as I set out to listen to what I thought would be an interesting story but turned out to be so much better than I expected.

Elliot McKenzie is the CEO of a highly popular social media corporation, Charmed Life.  Ostensibly, it’s for those who want to learn from past mistakes and make their lives as good as their potential.  Against all odds, he’s succeeded, and on the surface one would think he’d be pretty full of himself, but Elliot is not like that.  He’s quite down to earth and he certainly relies heavily on his staff, including his assistant, Serena.  So when she finds out he’s been getting threats, she’s on him to call the cops—something he won’t do because his sister is running for DA for the second time around and she lost the first race because of his arrest on the eve of the last election.  He won’t let bad publicity affect her this time—under any circumstances—so Serena convinces him to hire her sister’s ex-husband, a former Army Ranger who now works for a security firm.

Lennox West suffers from severe PTSD, so much so, that he’s afraid to spend too much time with his teen daughter, leading to an even further estrangement with his ex and with his daughter.  He’s trying though—going to therapy and making an effort to hold a steady job and to spend brief periods of time with the young girl.  When he meets Elliot McKenzie, life as he knew it changes drastically.  Elliot is not what he seems to be on the outside and he captures Lennox’s attention and holds it. That the sparks are mutual leads to some pretty hot sex for the two and lays the foundation for a closeness that Lennox is certainly not used to.

When accidents and threats and outright attempts on Elliot’s life keep throwing the men together and the mystery gets heavier as it appears that more than one culprit is involved, the men risk losing their independence as they see they need each other.  Does it help that Elliot’s presence in his life seems to increase the time Lennox gets to spend with his daughter? Definitely.

The story is highly enjoyable as told by Nick J. Russo who uses a deep, rough, slightly Southern accent for Lennox and a well-paced, business-like, professional tone for Elliot’s voice.  The women in the story don’t sound the least bit fake, and in fact, at times I forgot a man was doing their voices.  My enjoyment only increased as the mystery got more complex, the men got closer, Lennox got to spend more time with his daughter, and the threats and danger to Elliot escalated out of control.  My only downside was that the couple didn’t commit to a solid future together.  Possibly the author has plans to bring them back in a sequel, and that’s something I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing.  So though the guys are together at the end, I’d call it more of a HFN rather than a HEA—still good—just not where I wanted them.

I definitely recommend this to those who like a murder mystery—in this case attempted murder—in a contemporary MM romance with well-rounded, interesting characters.  It’s likely obvious by now, but if I must say so outright, I highly recommend the audiobook version.

Cover art by LC Chase depicts the rear view of a man holding a gun down at his side. Done in black on gray and with a smudged look—somewhat like a watercolor effect—the only part of the cover that stands out from a distance is the bright “fire” red title of the book.  I don’t think the cover adds any appeal at all and would not induce me to purchase it.

About Her Hometown Girl

I had doubts before the Big Day—doesn’t everyone?—but I didn’t expect to find my fiancée banging the caterer’s assistant right before the ceremony. Especially because he’s a guy. And we’re lesbians. The proper sort of Southern Californian lesbians who invest in hedge funds and wear bedazzled wedding dresses and wouldn’t be caught dead in a Subaru.

But then I became a runaway bride, headed straight for Belladonna Ink to get the kind of tattoo I always wanted and my ex always called trashy. She didn’t approve of a lot of things I did. I think maybe she didn’t approve of who I am.

So I’m determined to be as much of myself as I can manage. Dating my tattoo artist? I’m in. Cai is smart, sexy, and mysterious. Exactly what I need for a rebound. She keeps herself guarded, but I understand—I’m holding on to secrets too. The kind of secrets that make a girl want to run home to Mom, even if home is Idaho. Maybe especially then. I just didn’t expect Cai to come with me.

I wonder what it would take to get her to stay forever.

Now available from Riptide Publishing.

A Lila Audiobook Review: Tart and Sweet (Candy Man #4) by Amy Lane and Narrator: Philip Alces

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

In the Army, Robbie Chambers turned on his lover out of fear—and he hasn’t been able to live with himself since. Now he’s out of the Army but still trapped in the closet that brought on his most cowardly moment, and he starts to think he’ll never be able to fight his way free.

Until he sees Cy McVeigh. Beautiful and uninhibited, Cy is dancing on the boardwalk at Old Sac for no other reason than the moment called for it. Robbie not only joins in the dance but is smitten from the very beginning.

However, Robbie still has old business to clear up, and when he helps out a kid in need and comes face-to-face with the man he betrayed, he’s forced to come clean with himself. He can’t redeem his mistake if he’s still locked into his old patterns, and he won’t ever be worthy of Cy if he can’t earn Adam’s forgiveness. He’s going to need all the help he can get from the people at Candy Heaven in order to make things right with his past so he can have a future with Cy.

Tart and Sweet is another lovely story. Just like the title, it’s sweet and a bit tart, but not enough to overwhelm the plot. Like the previous three books in the series, we get to see all the original characters and how they are evolving in the relationships. At the same time, they all play an integral part in Cy’s and Robbie’s story.

The opening scene between Cy and Robbie is beautiful and envelops the listener into the magic of the boardwalk and the possibilities of a new relationship. The connection between them and Robbie’s hopes are palpable and in the air between them for all to see.

I enjoyed Robbie’s disposition to make amends about his past, starting with Adam. He doesn’t shy away from what he did and takes responsibility for his actions. This prepared him for an honest relationship with Cy; who isn’t perfect but understands Robbie’s needs. Cy’s inner shine is always present and Robbie is attracted to it, but their relationship is more than physical.

Overall, this one is perhaps my favorite in the series. I hope, we get many more trips to Candy Heaven.

The narration by Philip Alces continues to be perfect for the characters and the story. He has a continuity in the voices that allows the story to flow and for the characters to take life.

Paul Richmond’s cover is another adaptation from the original, including the pets and the always present piece of candy.

An Ali Review: Making It (Ringside Romance #3) by Christine d’Abo

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5
Devan knows exactly what he wants from life: a good career, a husband who loves him, and a child to call his own. He’s working at the perfect job, and has found the man of his dreams in Eli. That only leaves one box left to tick. When his friend offers to be a surrogate mother for Devan and Eli, he’s convinced all his dreams have come true.

Eli has been fighting his entire life. Fighting to keep his sick mother safe, fighting his frustration, and fighting daily as an up-and-coming MMA star. The one thing he can’t fight is the feeling that he’s made a terrible mistake agreeing to be a father with Devan. On the worst night of their lives, Eli knows Devan is better off without him, and leaves.

When Eli returns three years later he comes face-to-face with Devan and a son who might be his. Devan has moved on with his life, but seeing Eli once again reignites forgotten passion. Yet if Eli wants to make it work with Devan, he must decide if he’s ready for the biggest fight of his life.
I was super excited about this book. I love a good second chance story. Unfortunately this didn’t live up to my expectations.

The book starts three years in the past. Eli and Devon are married and they’re in a bad place. Things happen and Eli walks away from it all and the way he does it is truly horrible. My status update at this point said “Eli exhibited a bionic level of asshattery. He’s going to need to crawl through broken glass while begging for forgiveness for this to work for me.”

And there is the problem. He didn’t. He just shows back up, says he’s sorry and they’re seeing each other again. I couldn’t understand any decision Devon made at this point. They do this weird thing where they decide Devon should see other people so he knows he wants Eli back (but he hasn’t dated at all in the three years he’s been gone) AND he leaves his kid with Eli as the babysitter. Devon was like that one friend we all have who makes constant decisions that make you scream “WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING!?!” internally every time you talk about their relationship.
Despite the dramatic set up, the story is actually low angst and low drama and a nice and mellow love story. Which is not necessarily a bad thing but it was absolutely not what I was expecting or wanting from this book.

This is the third book in the series but is fine as a standalone. You see both couples from books one and two in this but the way the books are done they can all be easily read on their own.
This cover was done by L.C. Chase and I like it a lot.  I think it’s a good cover by itself but overall the covers of the books in this series have been some of my favorites this year.  They coordinate really well and they’re all striking in their own way.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Earning His Trust by Alicia Nordwell

Rating: 3.5 Stars out of 5

Evin lost the only two men he ever loved. But he might get a second chance with one of them—if he’s willing to take the risk.

Following the death of his husband, Evin is living in Portland and raising the infant son they had through a surrogate. Six-month-old Micah is his life, and if it means no time for activities or friendships beyond his minuscule support network, that’s a sacrifice Evin is willing to make. When he suffers a burn baking teething biscuits, the last person Evin expects to encounter in the ER is Ben, his lover from college—and the man who left him without a word of explanation.

Ben knows it won’t be easy to earn Evin’s trust and prove he’s not the same man Evin once knew, but he can’t bear to watch Evin struggle to care for Micah, hurting and alone. He wants back in Evin’s life, as a friend and hopefully more, but Evin’s heart is fragile, and the years have changed him too.

Earning His Trust by Alicia Nordwell is such a sweet, heartfelt contemporary romance in the second chance at love trope.   The author has many elements that always makes a story for me, a slow burn between the main characters, lovers reunited after a long period of time and given a chance to have their HEA, all wonderful aspects of this story.  Nordwell even throws in an adorable baby, Micah, who realistically burbles, coos and wins you over page after page.

Actually the best relationship here is between Evin and Micah.  It’s the deepest, the most realistic and the most heartfelt.  The love, the exhaustion, the deep joy, the questioning over his ability to parent while putting Micah first…that makes this story.  The reunion, establishing a friendship once more and perhaps a romance with Ben?  Definitely falls second, maybe third.

For me, that’s not due to the characterization but to the length of the story. I feel it just needed more than 112 pages to pull off a finished, satisfying relationship between these two men.  Why?  Well, for one, Nordwell has the readers absolutely believing in the deep grief and mourning that Evin is still doing for David, his husband and Micah’s father.  By the end of the story, I didn’t quite feel that Evin had put that away or that the author had put Evin through the steps of grief after making it such a huge part of the story.  In fact, it started to sound as though she was taking a cheaper route, which I found sort of appalling.

I like slow burn stories and this is definitely one of those. It has to be considering the circumstances they meet back together again and the ones they parted under.  Did all the past explanations roll out way too easily?  Perhaps, although these were very young men and running is sometimes the easiest option.  Again, a longer story would have brought more depth and layers to this section as well as to others.

I liked the ending and felt Nordwell brought the sweetness and romance we wanted here.  Could there have been so much more to Earning His Trust?  I  believe so but as it is I think it’s a story one might enjoy if you like romance,  second chances at love and totally adorable babies.

Cover art by Maria Fanning is adorable and perfect for Evin and Micah.

An Alisa Review: Broken Pieces by Ruby MacIntyre

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Clint is a young but respected alpha of the Tillamook Pack, and he’s content with the life he’s built for himself after his tragic past. But after his son tells him of an omega being chased into their territory, Clint jumps into action, unaware of how his life is about to change.

Julian finally escaped from his abusive alpha, but the betas are hot on his tail. He has little hope of escaping, until a huge, black alpha wolf charges to his rescue. But there’s one problem–Julian doesn’t trust any alpha, no matter how kind or different Clint seems.

Julian hates alphas after what was done to him. Clint knows and understands Julian’s feelings, so why can’t he seem to stay away from the fiery omega? Julian doesn’t get why his wolf wants to submit to Clint, or why he’s so angry when Clint seeks affection elsewhere. Surely he doesn’t want the alpha’s attention…right?

This was an interesting story and I’m definitely interested to see if more books in this work come out.  Clint has worked hard to be a respectable alpha and raise his son right.  His son, Jacob quickly makes himself Julian’s champion after his rescue.  Julian doesn’t know what to do about how Jacob and Clint treat him, he has always been taught that all that ever mattered was the will of an alpha.

Clint and Julian’s biggest downfall was that they never just sat down and talked, they reacted quickly and then made assumptions based on the other’s behavior.  Clint is still dealing with his youth and PTSD but hasn’t really found the best way to do that and in the process ends up causing more pain for himself and Julian.  I felt for Julian in his confusion, his wolf was saying one thing while his brain was saying another and with his past experiences he had trouble getting them to work together.  For all that Clint was understanding and gentle he was also a jerk when something didn’t go his way, I was definitely not his biggest fan.  The missing omegas in the end gave the opportunity for this to continue into a series and I am definitely interested to read more and see if these two really grow together.

Cover art by Valerie Tibbs is nice and works well for the story.

An Alisa Review: Talk Bunny To Me (Hoppity Shifter #2) by A.R. Barley

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

When werewolf hunter meets bunny shifter, romance is the last thing either one of them expects to find… but

Benjamin Holland is a werewolf hunter–and a pretty successful one. He’s hunting a rogue wolf in Minnesota when he trips over a bunny shifter and takes the twitchy nosed little dude back to Illinois. It’s strictly catch and release. He needs to get laid, but after getting his heart crushed by his best friend Peter he’s not looking for a forever mate.

Mating is the last thing on Justin’s mind. He’s just escaped an arranged marriage to his warren’s next Rex. He wants to make up for lost time and build a life for himself in Chicago, but the more time these two spend exploring the city together the better they get along. When Justin’s ex-fiance tracks him down to the city, they’re going to have to decide if forever might just start with one magical night.

This was a great follow up to Chasing His Cottontail.  Benjamin has been dealing with the rejection of his best friend but can’t help but want to protect another bunny shifter when he rescues him.  Justin is running away from the man he has been promised to and the violence he has been living in.

Justin will do anything he can to prove to Benjamin that he is a worthy mate while at the same time Benjamin loves to take care of Justin.  I loved Benjamin realizing that is he had ended up with Peter it would not have been right so there was no reason for him to be upset.  They definitely look forward to their future together and making a family.  We get to see glimpses of Peter and Luke too which was nice.  I couldn’t help but think that Justin would want to see his family but maybe after being promised to an abusive jerk he doesn’t feel the need.

The cover is wonderful and gives a great visual for Benjamin and Justin’s bunny.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with J.Leigh Bailey

Before I get started, I wanted to say a big “thank you” to Scattered Though and Rogue Words for  letting me stop by today and celebrate the upcoming release of STALKING BUFFALO BILL. I had so much fun writing this book, and I’m thrilled to be a part of Dreamspinner Press’s new line, Dreamspun Beyond.

Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

I’ve been reading romance—bodice rippers, category, cowboy, paranormal, pick a subgenre and I read it—since I was ten years old. Some were age-appropriate, some were definitely not. But I’ve always chased the Happy Ever After ending. As a writer, there was never any question in my mind that I would be writing romance. Because my reading choices were eclectic within the romance umbrella, my writing has been just as varied. The only requirement: HEA. As a result, I’ve written YA romance, contemporary romance, and paranormal romance. I mostly write male/male now (and I didn’t actually start reading that particular subgenre until well into my 20s), but I’ve had short stories published in horror and erotica with M/F pairings as well. Though, to be fair, even my horror stories could be categorized more as horror-lite and they had the promise of an eventual HEA. So, yes, it’s fair to say that my childhood and teenage reading habits DEFINITELY carried into my choices as a professional writer.

Do you like HFN or HEA? And Why?

I’m a big believer in Happy For Now (HFN) endings. Sometimes the traditional Happy Ever After (HEA) is unrealistic in the storyline as written. Sometimes the characters are 17 and clearly the are not going to get married and have a passel of kids. That being said, I can admit that, while the HFN endings are appropriate and logical, I always assume, in the deepest parts of my brain and heart, that the characters will ultimately have their HEA. Yes, even my 17-year-old boys will be together forever and ever, hopelessly devoted to each other for all eternity.

That’s what makes romance such an amazing genre. It’s all about the hope, the promise for a future together for two people (or more, if that’s your thing). The world can be a crappy, scary place, and I love that in romance no matter how bad things get, or how many obstacles they face, a couple will end up together, love will conquer all, and good will defeat evil.

Do you/did you read romances as a teenager and as an adult?

Yep. I was the girl who had my nose in a book—a ROMANCE book—all through middle school and high school, up through my adulthood. I was the one whose 7th grade English teacher wanted to know if my mother knew what I was reading (the answer is yes, she absolutely did). I’d been known to have a romance novel with me at the ROLLER RINK(!) and at the football game (!). During high school I read in study hall which taught me two things: First,  sex scene sound WAY different when read aloud by a 15-year-old boy than they do in your head; Second, in historical romances of 350-450 pages written in the early/mid-90s, there is always a sex scene on page 200. I was (and am) the lady in the office breakroom reading a different romance novel every day at lunch. It was more obvious back in the day when people could see the cover of the book, but in this age of digital, it just looks like I’m one of the many people staring at my phone.

Do you have a favorite among your own stories? And why?

I suspect that for an author choosing a favorite among her books would be like a parent choosing a favorite among her children. That being said, there are a couple of my stories that are favorites for different reasons. In some ways, GUYLINER (a YA coming out/coming of age story) is my favorite because it’s the “book of my heart” that authors talk about. It was the first manuscript I finished and will always hold a special place in my heart. NOBODY’S HERO is a favorite because it was my first published book, and so holds a special place in my heart. It also allowed me to explore some different family dynamics that I really enjoyed. But I have to admit, my newest book, STALKING BUFFALO BILL, though, is my current favorite-favorite because it was the most fun to write of any of my books. I completely fell in love with Donnie and his voice and personality. I got to be over-the-top and dramatic in a way I’d never been able to do before.

What’s next for you as an author?

I’m currently working on edits for the next book in the Shifter U series, CHASING THUNDERBIRD, and writing the third book, THE NIGHT OWL AND THE INSOMNIAC. Ford, the love interest in CHASING THUNDERBIRD, is introduced in STALKING BUFFALO BILL. He’s Donnie’s roommate and best friend. Ford and Simon—a geeky ornithology professor—have to pair up to battle a serpent-worshipping cult who are trying to gain immortality through the destruction of the entire race of thunderbird shapeshifters. Like STALKING BUFFALO BILL, it’s a little quirky and a little fun. I mean, a bird nerd and a mythical bird of prey battling a serpent-worshipping cult? So much fun to write.

Blurb

Stalking Buffalo Bill—A Shifter U Tale

A smitten coyote isn’t the only one stalking Buffalo Bill.

A buffalo walks into a cafe. Sounds like the start of a bad joke, but for coyote shifter Donnie Granger, it’s the beginning of an obsession. Donnie is a little hyperactive and a lot distractible, except when it comes to William. He finally works up the nerve to approach William but is interrupted by a couple of violent humans.

While William—don’t call me Bill—is currently a professor, he once worked undercover against an international weapons-trafficking ring. Before he can settle into obscurity, he must find out who leaked his location and eliminate the thugs. He tries keeping his distance to protect Donnie, but the wily coyote won’t stay away.

It’ll take both Donnie’s skills as a stalker—er, hunter—and William’s super-spy expertise to neutralize the threat so they can discover if an excitable coyote and a placid-until-pissed buffalo have a future together.

About the Shifter U Series

A fun, male/male take on shapeshifter romance, the Shifter U stories include characters who shapeshift into more than the average apex predator. Sure, there are wolves, tigers, and bear shifters, but there are also coyotes, owls, beavers, bison, and more.

All books in the series center around Cody College, located on the outskirts of Cody, Wyoming, where the occasionally furry have a safe place to further their education. Affectionately known as Shifter U, the school offers shapeshifting students a “special track” which gives them the chance to learn important subjects like mathematics, philosophy, and, most importantly, how to hide their secret identity from local humans.

Maintaining secret identities is tough. Dark secrets, old enemies, mythical heritage, and a mysterious illness challenge the stealth skills of even the sneakiest students and staff. While these shifters struggle to handle their type of “normal,” thorny complications of attraction pop up—always at the worst possible times.

A Stella Release Day Review: The Hike by John Inman

RATING 4,25 out of 5 stars

Ashley James and Tucker Lee have been friends for years. They are city boys but long for life on the open trail. During a three-hundred-mile hike from the Southern California desert to the mountains around Big Bear Lake, they make some pretty amazing discoveries.

One of those discoveries is love. A love that has been bubbling below the surface for a very long time.

But love isn’t all they find. They also stumble upon a war—a war being waged by Mother Nature and fought tooth and claw around an epidemic of microbes and fury.

With every creature in sight turning against them, can they survive this battle and still hold on to each other? Or will the most horrifying virus known to man lay waste to more than just wildlife this time?

Will it destroy Ash and Tucker too?

The Hike is one more proof ( one I didn’t need to know) how talented John Inman is. With this new release he made a hit again. The book is a succession of emotions, I was enthusiastic as soon as I saw the author had a new book coming soon, I was curious as soon as I read the blurb. Then I fell in love with Ash and Tuck in a bit, and it was inevitable. Later I was intrigued because I wasn’t understanding what was going on and John was amazing at keeping the suspense on high levels, I was scared and yes the tension was at eating me. At some point I admit I wanted to kill him because he wrote about something I’m not going to mention, but it’s something he should have avoided and I won’t forgive him (that’s also the only reason I didn’t give the story the full five stars). And at the end the feeling of satisfaction I got from the reading was deserved, to the characters since they went through so much, and to me too, because let’s be honest, I suffered with them.

And to me here stands the winning element of The Hike, how much I was able to connect with the characters, to feel them and their minds, to empathize with their hurting. Both Ash and Tuck were loveable, sweet and cute how I like my MCs, caring and brave. They are best friends first of all and even if now, ten years later their first meeting in high school, they are ready to admit their feelings for each others, they are determined to put the friendship on the first place. But the love is too strong and the hike they began will bring them to be fiercely sure of their future together.

I want to recommend The Hike because it is a great reading, the author writing is perfect and the mystery part is the ice on the cake, a little more that the author likes to add in his stories, like he did in the latest Love Wanted. I am definitely going to put John Inman among my favorite authors.

The cover art by Maria Fanning is very well done, and so fitting in the colors, the font, and looking at it now that I finished the book, I like it more cause I can truly see The Hike in it.
