A Lila Audiobook Review: Marriage of Inconvenience by M.J. O’Shea and John Solo (Narrator)

Kerry Pickering has a problem. As a publicist for Hollywood bad boy Jericho Knox, it’s Kerry’s job to keep Jericho in the news. So far, Jericho’s partying and public escapades have made it easy. But Jericho has a secret, and when that secret is revealed in the most spectacularly disastrous way, it’s up to Kerry to spin it.

The team decides the best course of action is to make the public fall in love—with Jericho’s secret committed relationship. The one that doesn’t exist. Yet.

The team wants someone they can trust. Someone in the inner circle. That someone is Kerry. But what will happen when Kerry realizes that for him, the romance is no longer pretend? Can Jericho love him back, or is he just playing a role?

Marriage of Inconvenience was an okay story. I like the idea behind the couple getting together as part of their jobs. They seem perfect for each other from the very beginning, but the delivery felt flat. Their connection didn’t fully develop, and their mood swings were ever present.

Just like other books in the series, this installment brings two men from different backgrounds into a relationship of convenience. The author did an excellent job describing the main characters and making their differences evident without being stereotypical. They both have a sound support system, which is refreshing in an era when gay men are seen as castaways.

The initial attraction between Jericho and Kerry seems force, and the misunderstandings were there for drama purposes only. I wanted to see more of the times between the MCs as friends and more interaction with the world in general. They were a bit shelter when considering they needed to change the public’s perspective of Jericho. Most of what we read was related to planning for those events.

Overall, this is a good story for fans of sweet and fluffy with a serving of smexy on the side.

As always, John Solo did a good job creating the characters for this story. I prefer Jericho’s voice more than Kerry’s, but in general, all the transitions were impeccable.

The cover for the audiobook is another adaptation from the e-book cover designed by Bree Archer. The model is definitely Jericho and the background let us know the story takes place in California.

Where do you normally draw your inspiration for a book from? A memory, a myth, a place or journey, or something far more personal?

It really depends. Inspiration comes to me from so many different places, but most often it tends to come from art or music. I regularly trawl through Deviantart for images that speak to me or demand a story. I similarly often find myself imagining the backstory or certain songs. Some of those imaginings have turned into stories and some are still waiting to be written.

Are you a planner or a pantzer when writing a story? And why?

I used to be a pantzer, but I’ve come to realize the importance of having an outline, even if it’s just a seven-point plot arc or rough sketch of the protagonist’s character arc. Since I’ve started writing fantasy, planning has become imperative in order to keep track not only of characters and plot, but of all the world-building. These days I rarely start writing without having some kind of plan to work from.

If you had a character you’ve written you would write differently now at this time in your writing career, who would it be and why?

This is an interesting question. I pretty much had this opportunity with Obscura Burning since this is the second edition. Harmony Ink allowed me a round of edits and I was able to rework a few story points, but most importantly, my protagonist. I must’ve been in a pretty dark place when I originally wrote this story because Kyle was so bitter and resentful. I couldn’t really relate to him anymore so, without compromising his core personality, I reworded a few things and let other things affect him to a greater or lesser extent, making him a slightly less unlikeable person – I hope!

Can a author have favorites among their characters and do you have them?

Hm, I’m not sure. It’s a bit like asking a parent to say who their favourite child is. I have moments where I might prefer one or the other, but I love them all!

If you were to be stranded on a small demi-planet, island, or god forbid LaGuardia in a snow storm, what books would you take to read or authors on your comfort list?

Anything and everything by Neil Gaiman. I’d also want the Raven Boys series by Maggie Stiefvater to keep me company. Those two authors are quite easily my favourites.

Were you an early reader or were you read to and what childhood books had an impact on you as a child that you remember to this day and why?

Both, my mom always read to me at bedtime and I started reading by myself or with my parents from a really young age. Books had a huge impact on my life, one in particular that still haunts me is The Voices of Silence by Bel Mooney about a little girl growing up in Romania at the time of the 1989 revolution.

If you were writing your life as a romance novel, what would the title be?

As a romance novel? Um, I have no idea… I rarely read romance so I’m quite clueless about good titles, but if ever I were to write my memoir or autobiography, I’d want to call it ‘Remember me as a time of day,‘ which is a song title from one of my favourite bands, Explosions in the Sky.

A Jeri Review:To Love and To Cherish (Vows #3) by Addison Albright

to-love-and-to-cherish-by-addison-albright A nurse practically left at the altar, a grouchy doctor and a meddling patient. What we get is a cute, kind of fluffy story that in the end, wraps up nicely.

Nash has been living on his best friend’s couch since he moved out of his fiance’s home. After said fiancé learned his “presumed dead” husband was not so dead. Two weeks before the wedding. Bemoaning his lack of love, he tells another friend and nurse that he has given up on love and would be happy with friendship, companionship and regular sex.

Dr Myles Birmingham is going through a divorce- according to the hospital grapevine. He overhears Nash and his friend talking and comes up with a plan or two. Plans that should benefit them both. Until a freak accident puts Nash in the hospital with a severely broken arm and no memories of the past four months.

This was a sweet book. Although I think it was trying to be a bit angsty, it just didn’t come off that way. There wasn’t enough of a build up between Nash and Myles/Emmitt for me to root for them one way or the other.

But it was a fluffy feel good book with a good cast of side characters- especially Grampy. I loved Grampy. But, I should have loved Nash and Myles/Emmitt more.

The third in a series, but can easily be read as a stand alone.

Cover art is bright and eye-catching.

That plot has a little of everything in it. Why the overabundance of plot threads?

I’m not sure whether you mean tropes/themes or major events the MCs face. Theme-wise, two are primary (marriage of convenience and memory loss) and are intertwined, and some others are incidental (doctor/nurse, hurt/comfort, gay virgin, unrequited love). The basic plot—which is hinted at in the blurb—is that Nash is disillusioned with love but longs for a committed, monogamous relationship. He embarks on a marriage of convenience scheme with a like-minded man. They each have things going on in their lives that would be simplified by this plan. The amnesia trope was added because there needed to be some drama along the MC’s journey toward love, and this made for a fun twist. The un-jaded Nash who has no bitter memories of his broken engagement wouldn’t have considered entering into a loveless engagement and naturally assumes it must be a love match. Event-wise, there’s not much I can give in the way of details without introducing too many spoilers. I’ll simply say that the events of the story are interrelated and flow along together.

Which was the one major trope that launched the inspiration for the story?

Marriage of Convenience. I love the trope, but I wanted to do a story that didn’t have a contrived reason for the marriage. No billionaire about to lose an inheritance if he didn’t get married within the next week, etc. I wanted it to truly be for the convenience of the two main characters. That being said, I do enjoy reading this trope no matter the reason it’s employed.

Ditched groom is always a great storyline, as is lost memory and marriage of convenience. Which is your favorite of the three if you had to pick a favorite?

That’s a tough one. I’d say it’s between memory loss and marriage of convenience. I suppose if I have to narrow it down I’d have to go with memory loss. There are so many different ways it can be handled, although my personal preference is for MC1 to forget MC2 (with whom he’s currently in a relationship), rather than it being an excuse for MC1 to get back together with an ex (whom he may or may not remember is in fact now an ex).

Did you read romance novels growing up?

Sure did. I read a mix of cheesy romances, classics, and science fiction.

What did you want to change about them and do you make those changes in your stories if any?

Oh, goodness. I’d be hard put to remember specifics, but generally speaking I spend more time thinking about my favorites rather than what I’d do differently in books I didn’t care for. If I love a story, I end up thinking about “what if” scenarios as well as “what comes next” in the characters’ lives. Or maybe flesh out the lives of favorite side characters. I can’t think of any that I’ve gone on to base one of my own published stories on, though.

I can’t help but think of one of my favorite books (Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen) and how there are now dozens of published stories that do just that. I’ve enjoyed the continuation stories, but I think I prefer the “what if this had happened instead of that” stories that change some pivotal scene then continue from there.

“Fuck dating. Let first impressions rule. I could’ve saved myself a world of hurt and heartache if I’d done that over the years. I don’t know why I stuck it out with some of my shitty boyfriends either. Wishful thinking, I guess. But you’re right, I knew practically instantly that my husband was going to be the love of my life. So yeah, don’t bother dating…simply ask him to marry you five minutes into the conversation. I’m sure it won’t scare him off or anything.” She accompanied that final instruction with a cocked eyebrow and one of her trademark smirks, as if the scornful tone she’d used wasn’t enough to keep the sarcasm from going over his head. Subtlety wasn’t Angela’s strong suit.

“Sage advice.” He raised a spoonful of soup in salute, then brought it toward his mouth.

Someone bumped his chair from behind. Nash rocked forward, and soup spilled down his chin.

Angela stifled a snicker, and a male voice he recognized said, “Sorry about that.”

Nash snatched up his napkin to wipe his face, and turned. “No problem, Dr. Burlingham.”

Although it was, of course. He felt like a fool with chicken noodle dripping down his neck. Dr. Burlingham stood there looking at him with an odd intensity. Probably thinking Nash had a screw loose or was some kind of man-whore if he’d overheard much of Nash’s rant. Whatever, it was none of the man’s business, and Nash would hopefully not be working at this hospital—where the doctor’s opinion would affect him—for much longer anyway.

After gazing at him for an uncomfortably long couple of seconds, Dr. Burlingham turned back to Dr. Gilbert Wilson, a friendly and outgoing pediatrician whose close friendship with Dr. Burlingham had long stymied the hospital grapevine. Dr. Wilson gaped at Dr. Burlingham with his own less-squinty version of Angela’s earlier side-eye. Except Dr. Wilson’s version was accompanied by a comical upturn to one side of his mouth, indicating his enjoyment of the scene—rather than concern for his friend’s mental health, as Angela’s countenance had implied.

As soon as the two doctors walked around the corner, Angela burst into a fit of the chuckles that would have been better suited to the set of Dumb and Dumber.

“Hardee-har-har,” was the best he could come up with in reply. Nash grabbed her napkin and crammed it down the front of his uniform to mop up the rest of the soup drippage.

“Did you see the look on his face?” Angela managed to gasp between giggles.

“Which one? The repugnance on Dr. Burlingham’s or the glee on Dr. Wilson’s?”

The guffaws coming from across the table intensified and drew some curious glances as well as several censorious glares. “Seriously, Angela, you’re going to give yourself a hernia. It wasn’t that funny.”

He nudged her bottle toward her and she took the hint, a couple deep breaths, and a slug of water. “Wasn’t repugnance,” she wheezed.

“What are you talking about?”

“The look on Dr. Burlingham’s face. It wasn’t repugnance. Closer to yearning.”

“Don’t even.” Nash froze. “Right now your position on the hospital grapevine is scaring the shit out of me. Don’t. Even.”

She held up a hand. “I wouldn’t. Calm down, sweetie. I’m stating facts, is all.”

“There’s nothing remotely factual about that statement, so don’t start with me. And so help me, don’t even hint at joking about something that stupid on the pediatrics floor where Dr. Wilson might get wind of it.”

She pointed a finger—or rather the finger—at him and bit out, “I’m not a fucking idiot.”

No, she wasn’t. Nash eased back in his seat. And she was a good friend. He sighed. “Sorry. I know you wouldn’t. Just put it down to the stress, okay?”

She gave his hand a squeeze and the tightness that had appeared in her shoulders visibly relaxed as well. “I’m sorry, too, sweetie. I shouldn’t tease you right now. I promise I would never start or feed any rumors about you, stupid or otherwise, but there truly was something in his look. I just want you to have a heads-up on that.”

Nash closed his eyes and took a deep, cleansing breath. It was doubtful, and so not a complication that would be appreciated right now in his life.

An Alisa Review: Safe Haven by Caitlin Ricci

Being alone was what Blake had always needed before his new team of bodyguards arrived. Now things might be very different.

At seven years old, Blake’s life was destroyed when he and his parents were abducted and he watched them being murdered. Now, twenty years later, he refuses to leave the house and he lives in a constant state of fear. He has a bodyguard around the clock, a housekeeper who has never seen his face and an uncle who checks on him often but isn’t all that close to him. Blake likes his isolation where only his cat really knows him.

His bodyguard of eight years is ready to retire, leaving his life in turmoil again. Blake isn’t good with people in general, and new people are the worst. But he needs someone in his house all the time to make him feel safe. His uncle hires a team of bodyguards to replace his old one—Malcolm, CJ and Rex. They come highly recommended, and they’re good at what they do.

They’re also together and it’s a relationship that Blake is instantly fascinated by. He’s never been interested in another person before, and he hasn’t had a real friend since his parents died, because he has refused to leave the house. But with the three of them trying to be there for him, he begins to want a life he has been convinced up to now would be completely impossible.

I really enjoyed this book and I thought the ménage/multiple partner theme was well done. Is it a very realistic situation? No, but I don’t think that is a necessity to make a good or interesting book. Blake hasn’t had anyone show any affection or really care for him since his parents were murdered. He makes a point to keep everyone at arm’s length, but no one really tries to get any closer either. All that changes when his new bodyguards come to live in his house.

Malcolm, CJ and Rex can’t help but be protective of their new charge and even though they don’t know him very well want to take care of him and at least be his friends. Their stubbornness starts to break through Blake’s walls just in time for his world to fall apart again. Blake learns that support from those you love can be the best kind.

This story is told from Blake’s point of view. He has pretty much been left alone and raised himself from the around the age of ten. For someone who hasn’t had much human interaction he has grown up remarkably well, though if something is outside his comfort zone it can throw him for a big loop. It is easy to feel how confused and scared Blake is at everything that goes on around him. Once he starts to open himself up and the more he asks questions, the more he can start to accept changes. Even though we don’t see Malcolm, CJ or Rex’s thoughts directly, you can see how much they care by their actions towards each other and Blake. I love that their love and support ultimately help Blake begin to break down his barriers and get outside.

The cover art is great and catches your eye, it also gives you a visual of the characters.

A VVivacious Review: Before Lovers by Wayne Mansfield

before-lovers Calvin is convinced that he has met Paul before and for the first time in his life he seems to be attracted to a man. As Paul and Calvin start to explore this rather unusual occurrence they discover a genuine love for each other.

But everything isn’t right, because every time Paul and Calvin have sex Paul seems to get flashbacks that feel vividly like memories.

This story is a paranormal romance. I liked the story’s plot and it was a quick and interesting read.

The best part of this book was its plot, how Calvin and Paul meet and how their relationship develops, and gets complicated by these flashbacks that Paul has, and how they resolve the issue is very interesting. The plot of this book while simple was also very intriguing and it made for a good read.

I liked the characters in this book especially Linda and Rick. Linda is a hopelessly pessimistic person but her dry take on the world was actually quite amusing and entertaining meanwhile Rick is a big brawny man who loves to cross dress. In fact Linda and Rick while not the focus of this story left quite an impression with their unique personalities. Paradoxically at the end of this story I feel that I had a better grasp on Linda and Rick then Calvin and Paul, even though Paul is the narrator of this story.

In regards to Calvin I think that there were a lot of things that we could have explored about his character that we didn’t probably because the book was from Paul’s POV and there were way weirder things happening to Paul. But I would have loved to know his opinion on this newly discovered aspect of his sexuality and how it was affected by the revelations in the end.

What I didn’t like about this book was its lack of detail to the extent that I was actually making up my own sentences in between transitions. This is especially true in the beginning of the book. Towards the end this is less obvious but this lack of detail made for some stilted transitions.

Also the scene which settles the conflict of this book could have done with better descriptions. I feel like the scene is good as it is but could have been better and more impactful if it was written from another perspective because right now even though it is written from Paul’s perspective it seems to be written solely for the benefit of a third party and is narrated completely devoid of any emotions on Paul’s part. On the whole if the author still wanted to keep the tone of the scene as it is it would have been better if a third person like Calvin was describing it so that we could better understand the implications of this scene.

Overall this book is a light, quirky and quick read that is very enjoyable and interesting.

A VVivacious Release Day Review: Black Snow by EAB

Brier Snow is the heir to the throne of Lirend. He has been imprisoned in the palace, isolated for much of his life. When his stepmother finds a clause in the contract regarding his succession that requires him to fulfil a year-long sabbatical away from the palace he is thrust out into the wildernesses of Aire with an unknown companion.

Roland Archer is hired by the queen to supervise her stepson’s year away from the palace. Roland has been alone for a very long time but he never expected to find a reason to live in Brier especially, as he was hired to do something very different. He pushes Brier away because he fears that Brier could never love him if he knew the truth.

But as things stand, fate isn’t done with these two, there’s something quite unexpected brewing and the journey to true love was never going to be easy.

This book is an interpretation of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and it was an amazing one to boot. What I loved about this book was that it managed to retain that fairy tale glow despite being very different from conventional fairy tales. The story also managed to capture a lot of the nuances of its parent story, reworking them in ingenious ways to serve the purposes of the plot. Another aspect of this book I loved was that the legend of Snow White actually exists in Brier’s world albeit with a wonderful, seemingly irrelevant twist. In a way Brier’s opinion on the story sets the stage for Black Snow.

“But how did she come to love the prince who had only loved her for her beauty when the huntsman had loved her for her heart?”

But things don’t turn out to be so easy when the prince is a salve for a broken heart and a relationship between a king and a Thenian huntsman is frowned upon by all the courtiers even without Roland’s secret seeing the light of the day.

Black Snow has a very political background which influences the story a lot, especially the plight of the Thenians and the social hierarchy of Lirend. The story is very rich and there are just so many amazing things happening that it is hard to mention each one.

I absolutely adored this book. I loved how the stage was set for all the events in this book and how the story enfolds. One of the things I liked about this book a lot was how long it was, while a good book is never really long, this book surely has the pages to be considered long and I loved that because not only does that enable the author to explore every nuance that helps set the stage for this epic love story but it also allowed me to really spend time in the world of this book soaking up all the wonderful details.

For me one of the most amazing things in this book is how Brier and Roland fall in love the entire part of the story that takes place in Aire feels especially magical, in an already magical story.

This story spans years so there is a lot going on but the best part of this story being spread across years was that we actually get to see characters grow during this years, especially Brier. Brier starts out as an inexperienced nineteen year old prince isolated by the Queen, completely out of his element in Aire. As he spends more and more time in Aire we see him grow, fall in love and then fight for that love and then we see him as King and it is quite amazing seeing Brier transform from a prince to a King because it really brought forth so much of his hidden potential because in that one moment that he became King he grew the most and it was amazing because in fairy tales we rarely ever see the political aspect of Kingdoms and maybe for good reason because politics is rarely free of treachery and corruption. But I loved how the author managed to make it such a central part of Brier’s development.

This book is kind of my dream come true. A long book which happens to be a romance (as romantic books are very rarely long a fact I never knew I resented till I could get my hands on this book and really appreciate how wonderful it is to be able to spend hours on end immersed in the world of your favourite characters) that is a re-imagining of one of the world’s oldest fairy tales that happens to be an mpreg (a fact that is made possible in this story by that seemingly irrelevant alteration to Snow White’s story as it is told in Lirend).

This book is magic!

Cover Art by Natalya Sorokina. The cover is beautiful. It is so amazing if I am not wrong I think it depicts the scene between Roland and Brier at the festival of Yensira because when I see the cover it reminds me of that scene and I end up squeezing uncontrollably.

A Paul B Release Day Review: Running Blind by Kim Fielding and Verona Keyes

running-blind-by-kim-fielding-and-venona-keys Kyle Green is a successful voice actor with a partner of ten years. Finishing up the latest season of the hit anime Ecos, Kyle feels a bit tired. He wakes up in the hospital having suffered a stroke at forty. His motor functions seem to be fine but he finds out that he is blind. This will make it impossible for his to continue his work with the animated series. When his partner Matt informs him that he just received a grant to work on Native American ruins for the next five years, Kyle insists that he go. Kyle reasons that the spark in the relationship was lost years ago and he should not stand in the way of Matt’s research.

With the help of his sister Lily, Kyle starts to learn how to live as a blind man. When Kyle sees spots of light while moving, Matt arranges for Kyle to see a neurologist. Kyle is experiencing Riddoch syndrome, where previously sighted people can see some things when in motion. He decides to try running. As he runs, he begins to see things in motion but is tripped up by a child’s tricycle. He is helped by Seth Caplan, a man who recently moved by to Chicago to help his mother. Seth offers to help Kyle home. He suggests Kyle finding a volunteer to run with. Kyle contacts the local advocacy agency who sets things up. Who should call Kyle but Seth? The men are definitely attracted to each other but each has what they consider baggage that they carry into the possible relationship.

I really enjoyed this book. Kyle seems to have everything at the beginning and loses it all within the first couple of chapters. Kyle, while upset he may never be able to anime again, he rebounds by doing audiobooks and commercials, which do not require synchronization with video. Seth is a lawyer who quit a large firm to work with a tech company which develops apps for adaptive technology. He came back to Chicago to help out with his mother who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Kyle does not want to be a burden due to his blindness while Seth has something in his past he feels guilty about and has not been in a relationship in a while. The end is definitely a foreseeable happily ever after.

The cover by Anna Sikorska is perfect for this book. It has what appear to be two runners, bound by tether at the wrist. It could be from a scene right out of the book.
