A Stella Review: A Healing Man (Men of Manhattan #5) by Sandrine Gasq-Dion

Rating 4 stars out of 5

A Healing Man coverDario Ramos thought he’d left the fighting behind in the war zone when a life-threatening injury sent him home. But a certain Irishman crossing his path everywhere he went convinced him that his biggest battle might be ahead. Tiernan Callahan is a bigoted jerk. Ramos finds himself constantly in the man’s orbit, even in a city as big as New York. The wounded warrior knows all about pain and loss — and that sometimes anger is the only form of release. When Tiernan once again crowds Ramos’ space, his eyes are opened to the possibility of other forms of release.

Tough NYC cop Tiernan Callahan is still mourning the death of his beloved youngest brother, Mason.

Fearing his close-minded family’s reaction, the young soldier never got to tell them his secret — that he was gay and engaged to the love of his life. Tiernan is surviving on anger and guilt. When he continues to run into Dario Ramos, who continues to push his buttons, something inside him snaps. Suddenly, anger isn’t the only emotion he feels.

Two very different men, still trying to heal: Can they come to an understanding and heal each other?

A Healing Man is the fifth book in the Men of Manhattan series by Sandrine Gasq-Dion and so far my favourite. It was sweet funny and sexy. I loved every single word. It’s a beautiful story about loss.

Tiernan is a cop in the NYPD, he lost his brother in war four years ago. Mason was in the closet and when he died Tiernan discovered he was gay and engaged to Casper. He feels betrayed by Mason cause he didn’t trust him to know the most important thing about his life. He’s so angry he is becoming distracted at work and an homophobic asshole. Since his brother died, Tiernan has put his carrier in danger one time too much. His captain decides to assigned him a new partner, Danny, a gay man. Danny is the first one to think Tiernan could be gay, or at least bi.

“Oh God, you’re one of those.”

“What?”

“A paranoid penis. A guy who thinks each and every one of us gays wants in your ass. Trust me, Callahan—I don’t want your ass.”

Dario loses his leg in duty and he is still recovering for alcohol abuse too. He drank to forget all about the years he spent on the field. Now he’s been sober from years and he’s working for the Wounded Warrior Project and as a model. He lives with his girlfriend Maria, until one day he goes home and finds her packing, tired of being with him just for pity.

Tiernan and Dario keep running into each other and what was “hate at first sight” in time become lust/love.
I loved these characters so much, they are amazing, I liked how in the story they grow to be better men, especially Tiernan. He was really hateful in the previous books and I was so proud of him for admit and make up for his mistakes. Of course his parents really sucked but he’ll have a great cast of second characters to support and love him no matter who he’s chosen to love.

There are some very funny scenes, for example when Dario asked gay sex tips to Danny, it was hilarious. And really? Bacon lube? No idea it existed, I’m already hungry.

There are some guys I really want to know more about. I’m hoping in a couple more of books at least in this series. They deserve to have their own HEA.

Highly recommended, this book and the whole series.

COVERT ART by Wilde City Press. I don’t like this series’ covers. They are pretty much the same with a different model for each book. They are good to look at but nothing more.

A MelanieM Review: Seth and Casey (Storming Love: Blizzard #3) by R.J. Scott

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5

STorming Love- Blizzard coverSeth Wild is a fire fighter who has lost everything when a building collapsed on him during a rescue, a rescue that went wrong.  Seth’s inability to handle his PTSD, his injuries and his refusal of help from anyone, including his partner Casey, cost him their relationship and their home together.

Casey, a school teacher, is on a field trip that his partner promised to help him conduct and chaperone…until a fire and Seth’s injury caused everything to fall apart.  Casey had hoped to try and reach Seth once more while out in the woods with the kids but Seth is a no show.

Then a freak storm puts Casey and Seth on a collision with each other and their future when Casey and the children are stranded in the blizzard and Seth is their only hope.  Seth is the last fire fighter left in town with his bum leg but when Casey calls for help he doesn’t hesitate. Seth always promised he would be Casey’s hero, but will he ever again be Casey’s love?

Seth and Casey is a wonderful story that easily could be enlarged to encompass Seth and Casey’s back history and romance.  As it is, RJ Scott moves the reader easily into the present day with an embittered Seth living alone in the house he shared with Casey and still refusing to accept any help with his recuperation or PTSD.  Most of the story unfolds from Seth’s point of view as the storm moves into the area and the flakes start to fall.

I loved how Scott shows us how out of touch Seth is with everyone around him.  The station house has been emptied because of accidents caused by the historic storm and the only person left behind is a scared rookie.  But Seth appears oblivious to the storm’s approach or the magnitude of the blizzard, something everyone else knows of because of news reports and being a part of the community.   Slowly Seth is jolted back to awareness as first he notices the number of missed phone calls from Casey he has gotten and then the trouble he is having navigating sidewalks and roads on his way to the fire station.  His bad leg is making his journey slow and awkward but that’s nothing to what he will face once Seth enters the firehouse.

Scott builds the suspense and drama with all the pace of a fast approaching snowstorm.  First just some flakes appear, then more and finally whiteout conditions, both in Seth’s emotions and the situation that Casey and the children find themselves in. And the scarier the storm gets the deeper and more gripping does the precarious situation become.  If Seth is to win out, he must navigate the obstacles around him, from the physical to the barriers he has raised in his own heart.  I loved Seth and Casey, rooting for them and their relationship every hard won step of the way.

This was the first story I read in the Storming Love: Blizzard collection and  if the others are like it, I can wait to grab them all up.  Pick up RJ Scott’s Seth and Casey as they make their way back to HEA!  I am on my way to Kimo and Mike!  Meet you there!  A highly recommended read!

A MelanieM Review: Creature Comfort by Rob Rosen

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Creature ComfortThree hundred years into the apocalypse, centuries-old zombie queen, Creature Comfort, and the love of her afterlife, Dara Licked, see a plane land near their salt factory in Utah.  Its the same plane that carried her friends and fellow drag queens, Destiny St. James, Kit Kat, and Blondella Bombshell off to New York City.  Now that same plane has landed 300 years later and out pop some drag queens asking for their help!  How could they refuse?

Soon Creature and her beloved, Dara, find themselves beneath a gussied-up Lady Liberty, surrounded by a race of fabulous drag queens. Humanity (what’s left of it) is in dire trouble, attacked by unseen menacing forces. Can Creature and Dara and a host of new friends possibly save the day?

Last year Rob Rosen published a story, Queens of the Apocalypse, featuring drag queens, zombies and, of course, an apocalypse.  I loved it.  It had humor, a whole lot of heart, and spunk!  Lots and lots of spunk!  Now at least one of the queens is back, the zombie one of course, in Rob Rosen’s Creature Comfort, and I admit I was a little leery about diving back into a universe and revisiting characters that I adored.

When you give a book 5 stars and love the ending, having a sequel can be a mixed blessing.  What if you don’t like what happens after the first book ended?  What if the magic and sparkle that made the first story so special is missing in the sequel? Yikes!  But I am happy to report that I  don’t see that happened here…mostly.

Creature Comfort picks up 300 years after Creature’s fellow and still human drag queens, Destiny St. James, Kit Kat, and Blondella, left her behind in a salt factory in Salt Lake City, along with a  small group of humans to find (hopefully) safety and sanctuary in New York City.  Creature had been brought back to a sort of living dead (yet totally fabulous) existence by the means of iodized salt so what better place to live than surrounded by salt!  Even better, Creature finds her soulmate in another gay zombie, drag queen Dara!  So far so good.

But Rob Rosen makes it clear that Creature and Dara’s existence has been pretty drab for a long, long time.  When the plane arrives (“da plane, da plane”), and three pretty young and human people pop out dressed like drag queens asking for help, its clear a road trip of apocalyptic proportions  is in the works.  By then I realized how much I had missed this quixotic, kind of horrible yet wonderful universe.  And Creature of course.

From the beginning Rosen starts building in the mystery and suspense.  The plane?  It’s exactly the one that Creature’s friends left in.  And why is everyone wearing drag when they aren’t gay?  And in one of the books funnier moments, when the Statue of Liberty comes into view, Creature and Dara notice (how  can they not) that she has been given a drag queen makeover too, complete with lipstick and glitter.  How fabulous!

But Rosen’s stories don’t shine on humor alone.  No, there is plenty of pathos and pain to go around and soon clues are falling into place that nothing is as it seems.  And we find out what happened to my favorite drag queens.

Soon it is up to Creature and her love, Dara to save humanity one more time and from a most unexpected source!  To do so, Rosen has created two more memorable characters, songstress Lola Fontaine (“winner of two Tony’s”) and her husband Lester aka Ricky, whose love for each other can’t be denied.  Between the four of them, the power of love and some fabulous zombie queens and their partners save the world once more.  Its fun, snarky, full of glitter and high-heels (Jimmy Cho’s), some laughter and tears.  Ok, not so much that as zombies can’t cry.  But you get what I’m aiming for.  Rosen brings real feelings and substance to zombies in love in a post apocalyptic world.  And even with two elements that made me less than happy (Rob, you know what they are), I  found myself falling back in love all over again.

If you are unfamiliar with the first story, some of Creature Comfort might be a little slow going and confusing at first.  Rob Rosen will fill in the blanks about the universe he built in Queens of the Apocalypse here but it takes time.  Much better to have read the first story and be well prepared for this one.  It gives you a ready made base for the humor inherent in the House of Bombshell and the House of St. James now so much a part of society on Liberty Island, to say nothing of Saint Creature!

And the ending leaves open the possibility of yet another story for Creature, Dara, Lola and Lester.  I hope so.  I would love to see what happens when they all get back to Utah.  It should be a doozy!  In the meantime, if you love zombies, drag queens and some wild action/adventure, well, then, Creature Comfort is the story for you!  Its fast paced, funny, sometimes a litle sad but always, always entertaining.  I highly recommend it as well as Queens of the Apocalypse, along with author Rob Rosen.  Don’t pass them up!

Cover artist?  Like the cover but its a little simplistic.  I far prefer the cover of the first story, Queens of the Apocalypse!

In the Book Spotlight: The Librarian by Lee Brazil (tour, excerpt and contest)

magnifying glass and bookThe Librarian by Lee Brazil
Re-release February 24, 2015

LBRC

Author Lee Brazil Bio:

Somewhere in a small town in up-state New York are a librarian and a second grade teacher to whom I owe my life. That might be a touch dramatic, but it’s nevertheless one hundred percent true.

Because they taught me the joy of reading, of escaping into worlds crafted of words.
Have you ever been nine years old and sure of nothing so much as that you don’t belong? Looked at the world from behind glasses, and wondered why you don’t fit?

Someone hands you a book, and then you turn the page and see… There you are, running from Injun Joe in a dark graveyard; there you are fencing with Athos; there you are…beneath the deep blue sea- marveling at exotic creatures with Captain Nemo.

I found myself between the pages of books, and that is why I write now. It’s why I taught English and literature for so many years, and it’s why my house contains more pounds of books than furniture.

If I’d had my way, I’d have been a fencer…or a starship captain, or a lawyer, or a detective solving crimes. But instead, I am a writer, and I’ve come to realize that’s the best thing in the world to be, because as a writer, I can be all those things and more.

If I hadn’t learned to value the stories between the pages, who knows what would have happened? Certainly not college…teaching…or writing.

More about The Librarian…TheLibrarian-800x1200

A rash vow of celibacy puts Valentine Michaels in the path of seduction.

Val is at a crossroads in his life. A college dropout, he’s gone as far as he can in his career as a cosmetologist, owning his own style salon. He no longer finds satisfaction in it, though he’s put years into proving to his bigoted parents that a college degree and the veneer of straightness aren’t the only roads to success. They’d turned their backs on him, and he proved he didn’t need them to make it.

His love life is no better than his working life. His relationships always start with a bang and fizzle into boredom, or worse, anger.

Adrian Grey has his own agenda for helping Val: he’s been in love with Val since they were freshmen. The intervening years of listening to Val’s gossip about his lovers and relationships have taught Adrian just what it was he did wrong all those years ago, and he thinks this time around he now knows exactly how to get—and keep—his man.

Excerpt:

Impatiently, Val flipped his powder-blue locks over his shoulder, tapping the little whisk broom against the counter where his supplies were arranged neatly. “Derek, you left me standing around at Paul’s for an hour, a place I totally hate by the way, without even a phone call to say you weren’t coming, and then I walk past you playing ball in the park with your friends on the way back here. I’m not overreacting!”

He ran a swift eye over his supplies. Scissors, combs, spray bottle with water, gel, mousse. Everything in order. While he prepared his workstation, he listened with half an ear to the deep voice on the other end of the phone, trying to explain or rationalize or whatever, but he wasn’t into hearing what Derek had to say. The guy was an immature jerk who put his own wants ahead of everything, even if it meant leaving Val standing in a group of young college kids he barely knew, in a bar he usually avoided like the plague. He’d gone to the party in the first place for Derek. Being stood up while doing something so selfless pissed him off. Just once in a relationship, Val wanted to find a guy who put him first, who loved him more than sports, friends, and all the other temptations the wicked world offered. “Just forget it, Derek. You don’t get it. It’s not just last night; it’s the whole last few months.”

More rumbling and babbling in his ear. He ran a dust cloth over the client’s chair and then adjusted its height. Prepping his station at the salon was second nature and required little of his attention. Kind of like listening to Derek. Why the fuck do I listen to this shit? Derek had all the emotional understanding of a two-ton truck. Cute as hell, but clueless about what would melt Val’s heart. In fact, Derek might accurately be called dense altogether. A little consideration, a romantic gesture or two, would go a long way. Hell, an apology instead of an excuse would probably have gotten him a second chance even this morning. Eh. Who are you kidding? Derek is a symptom, not the illness itself. “Fuck off, Derek. It’s over. Do me a favor and lose my number, okay?”

Flipping the phone shut, he shoved it into the pocket of his smock and busied himself cleaning up his workspace. A quick spray of glass cleaner to the mirror, a swipe or two with a rag, and he was done. Done with Derek, done with men, done with romance and love and sex, and fuck it all. He could be celibate. Masturbation didn’t count as sex, did it? He’d need something if he wasn’t getting any.

A MelanieM Review: My Cowboy Homecoming (The Cowboys #3) by Z.A. Maxfield

Rating:   4 stars out of 5

Love can heal the deepest wounds…

My Homecoming CowboyThe death of a brother and a father in prison bring a soldier home.  Sgt. Calvin Tripplehorn had every intention of making the army his career and never returning home.   But duty and obligation calls when he  receives notice that his brother has died, leaving his mother unable to cope.  However, returning home brings up all the old problems and issues that sent Tripp into the Army in the first place.

Tripp hates returning to his New Mexican home, a place where the name Tripplehorn means hate, pain, and general ill will, mostly due to his crazy father who burned people’s homes and businesses to the ground and destroyed lives all around him. It doesn’t help that one of the people who picks him up at the airport is gorgeous and flirty…that is until Tripp’s last name is mentioned.

Cowboy Lucho Reyes is returning to work at the J-Bar Ranch after an injury sent him to the town’s clinic.  On the way back they pick up a soldier returning home and Lucho thinks the gorgeous vet is everything he has been looking for.  Until he hears the soldier’s name.  Tripplehorn.  The family of drug dealing bigots who burned his family’s restaurant to the ground causing the death of the his grandfather.  He hates the Tripplehorns, they are nothing but trouble.  But there’s something different about Calvin.

In need of employment, Tripp is hired at the J-Bar Ranch, a dream he had as a child and now the home of a man Tripp finds irresistable, if only Lucho will give him a chance to prove he’s not his father’s son.

My Cowboy Homecoming is the third book in Z. A. Maxfield’s The Cowboys series.  And while it was the first I have read of the three books published, My Cowboy Homecoming was so endearing and enjoyable that it will send me back to read the first two stories to see what I have missed.

Having started here at the third book, I liked that I didn’t feel that I was lacking anything as far as background or information.  Z. A. Maxfield nicely filled in all the important details from the  previous stories and series foundation, so I was able to read and delve into the plot as it unfolded without feeling there were gaps missing in everyone’s back history.

There is so much to love here starting with the J-Bar Ranch itself, owned and operated by a gay couple, Speed Malloy and Crispin Carrasco, and another gay pairing, Jimmy Rafferty and Eddie as ranch hands.  It’s truly a different sort of place, complete with three-legged dogs and rescue horses in need of therapy and retraining.   That’s where Lucho’s injury comes in, while trying to help a newly arrived abused horse.  Element upon delightful element is added to help add dimension and realism to a story that has go much heart and pain packed into it.

The beginning is simple enough. A soldier arrives home after leaving the service so he can help out his family. But what follows is anything but simple.

Tripp is arriving home to see his mother, his brother has died, his father in prison and there is no one at the airport to welcome him or pick him up.  Immediately the atmosphere changes into something dark. He’s picked up by two ranch hands from the J-Bar as a favor but what starts off as a welcome helping hand turns bitter as soon as Tripp’s name is revealed.  From then on out, Z.A. Maxfield’s cowboy drama rolls out a series of past abuses and terrors delivered by the Tripplehorn men (Tripp excluded) upon the community.

It’s a horrific little journey into everyone’s past, including Lucho’s, and we start to see two different perspective on Tripp’s family and the dynamics that caused Tripp to flee into the Army.  Maxfield doesn’t dump all the pain and angst on the reader at once, instead it is doled out, the facts and emotions building up to a painful picture of an abusive, racist father who did his best to control his brood and wife and is still trying to do so from his prison  cell.

Tripp’s mother is a character most if not all readers will love to hate.  Her weakness is frustrating, her actions lamentable, and her inability to act on her own behalf or her son’s removes most of the compassion a reader is inclined to award her.  Men are her backbone and she has found another support system in her husband’s sleazy lawyer.  I think most of the reader’s frustration will stem from Tripp’s actions towards his mother.  A war seasoned veteran who turns so passive and ineffectual when it comes to interacting with his past and his mother.  This section of the story could easily turn off the reader if the author had not done such a great job in laying the foundation for this mother/son dynamic and using it for further actions down the road.  Great job all around.

The highlight of this story, of course, is the hot, sexy and actually sweet romance that springs up between Lucho and Tripp.  It’s one tough road to romance for both men, and the joy and heart of this story is watching them fall into love and work hard to make their relationship work.  It will involve Lucho’s family, one abused horse, and the support of those around them at the J-Bar Ranch.  Maxfield brought the characters from the previous stories (Malloy and Crispin, Jimmy and Eddie) into My Homecoming Cowboy so I am hopeful that any future stories will bring us up to date on Lucho and Tripp’ relationship.  Plus I want to know if Crispin succeeds in bringing ostriches onto the ranch!

Did I love this story?  You betcha!  Tripp and Lucho were so easy to take to heart and from the small interactions I saw between the other characters were enough to make me want to know their stories as well.

If you love your cowboys and romance, this is the story for you.  It’s probably even the series for you.   It has drama, angst, romance and animals whose characters are as quirky and endearing as the people they live with!  It’s one of my recommended reads!

Cover artist did a great job.  I love this cover.

Always Been You Excerpt:

Straightening his back, he met Jared’s gaze.

“Fine. Let’s take a seat and get this over with, shall we?”

“Is that the way you talk to all of your clients? Cause I have to say, I’m surprised you get much business then,” drawled Jared.

Ignoring the comment, Seth led them to one of the booths. He cast a glance towards the kitchen, but Sal seemed to be preoccupied. Maybe telling the man to just ‘go for it’ hadn’t been a smart move. Something told him things were going to cost more than he thought.

Taking a seat opposite one another on the old scuffed booth with weathered red leather seating, that he absently noted to himself had to be added to the ever growing list of things that needed replacing, Seth launched straight into professional mode. He needed details to come up with something that the future bride wanted and that’s all he was focused on. At no time did he notice how good Jared looked, or how muscular he had gotten.

Seth hadn’t even taken note of Jared’s soft pink lips or his large firm hands.

Really.

Not at all.

Dammit.

The Thief (Marine Bodyguards #2) by Patricia Logan
magnifying glass and bookRelease Date: February 28, 2015

Ready for a book that has mystery? Suspense? Romance? Humor and Hot Too?

Let’s take a closer look at The Thief by Patricia Logan!

10828134_732475270171981_880516576454744950_o

Author Patricia Logan Bio:

Patricia Logan resides in Los Angeles, California along with her husband, four children, her grandchild and ever increasing number of cats. When not being stage mom, baking cookies, or scooping kitty litter, she writes steamy, award winning, gay erotic romance and tries to lead her readers on a journey of discovery with more than a little angst.

A Little Q and A with Patricia Logan…

1.  Your story contains many elements, humor , suspense, mystery…how do you balance it all?

By having a clear vision of who my characters are, first of all. Secondly, I like to have a great story planned when writing it. All of my books have strong male characters who know who they are or who find themselves and come into their own as the story progresses. The fun thing when writing their story, is finding a great setting and plot to go along with them on their journey. I always have bad guys and they are usually very evil. This makes for ease in storytelling because the plot nearly writes itself. Comedy comes naturally for me because I have a great sense of humor and I love to laugh.

2.  A note says that the story can be read as a stand alone yet it’s part of a series.  Are the books in this series very loosely connected or do you make sure that each story has enough background that reading them in order isn’t necessary?

All of my series have a central theme whether that be a place (Texas), a BDSM club, or a profession. In the case of the Marine Bodyguards series, the books all have a bodyguard who is a former Marine, but all the stories are completely stand alone. In all my books in every series, there are crossover characters who appear in book one as minor characters, and then they get their own story in book two and so on. Various series tie together by the inclusion of crossover characters from series to series as well.

3.  Which character in your book came first?

My bodyguard, Ranger came first. In his case, he first appears in “The Superstar” but I liked him so I decided early on, he needed his own story.

4.  Plot or character?  Which came first?

The plot came first with this story. I knew exactly what I wanted the book to be about and I plugged my wisecracking Ranger into it. The big burly Marine was a perfect match for my nerdy Landry.

5.  Why choose the professions you did for these characters?

Landry’s profession is clearly defined by the plot of the book and Ranger defines the series.

6.  If I said you had to choose an element to eliminate from your story, what would it be and why?

As fun as they are to read, sex scenes have become tedious for me to write and I have to work very hard to make them sexy, fun, and fresh. In this case, I have a virgin and an experienced man of the world so they were very cute as well as unbelievably sexy in bed together.

7.  What favorite childhood story had the greatest impact on you and why?

I was a voracious reader from the time I could read so it is very hard to choose. I’d say, I loved mysteries like the Nancy Drew books. I can still remember my mother and I shopping for the very first book when I was about 10 years old. It was #2 in the series, “The Hidden Staircase”, and I was hooked from that very first book. Stories like “Stewart Little” gave me my love for sweet and unusual characters and I loved the way E.B. White brought his world to life in my young imagination.

8.  What’s next for Patricia Logan?

I am in the process of turning all of my books into audio books and that is a time consuming project but hopefully it will be very rewarding as I gain new readers/listeners. I just finished writing a story with my friend, Rain Carrington, and that will be released in the fall. I am writing a BDSM for a new series, and of course, the Marine Bodyguards series will continue since there are a lot of stories and let’s face it, my mind is filled with an endless supply of hot Marines who need their stories told.

The Thief Synopsis:

Former Marine and bona fide hero, Ranger Corrigan, is one paycheck away from joining his brethren among the ranks of Los Angeles’s homeless Veterans. When he is offered a great paying job in a palatial mansion, Ranger jumps at the chance for a roof over his head and a hot meal in his belly.

Handsome and cultured Landry Metzel lives too well to be the insurance appraiser he claims to be, and Ranger can’t help but want to know why he’s been hired to protect an innocuous man with no enemies. Metzel certainly won’t be sorry to see him go.

As famous masterpieces suddenly begin disappearing from private collections, Ranger begins putting two and two together. When an LAPD detective starts asking questions about murders tied to the thefts, Ranger suddenly wants to learn more about the man he’s hopelessly attracted to.

A wisecracking former Marine, a man with a desperate secret to hide, and a murderous villain come together in a tale of murder, danger, intrigue, and the crime of the century.

The Thief Excerpt:

“I know it’s silly… please don’t laugh at me but, I just imagine you came in and swept me off my feet, picked me right up and set me on the back of your white horse and made me… well… you made me feel complete Ranger.” Landry chuckled.

“Ranger… you complete me… I love you.” Ranger lay there quietly listening, probably stunned by Landry’s revelation. “You don’t have to say anything back to me, baby, but I just wanted you to know… I love you.”

Landry quieted, listening to Ranger’s breathing as something suddenly dawned on him. He frowned.

“Ranger?” he whispered. “Baby?” Landry let go of the gorgeous hair he loved so dearly and reached around, pushing gently at Ranger’s shoulders. Ranger breathed deeply, his chest rising and falling. “Ranger…” Landry said a little louder. He frowned and pushed at Ranger as he felt his flaccid cock slide out of his ass. “Ranger!” Landry squirmed out from under him as he finally pushed hard on Ranger’s pecs.

Ranger groaned and rolled to his back and Landry rolled with him, propping himself up on one elbow as he looked down into Ranger’s relaxed face. His long black eyelashes lay against his cheeks. When his mouth fell open, he let out a loud snore.

“Khhaaaaa!”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Landry asked. “Are you ASLEEP?”

An Interview with Joe Cosentino, author of An Infatuation

by Dreamspinner Press/Bittersweet Dreams!

An Infatuation cover

An Interview with Joe Cosentino…

What has the response from readers been like so far to An Infatuation?

The response has been amazingly positive. The novella received mostly rave reviews from all web sites and extremely enthusiastic response from readers. An example of a reader response that really touched my heart was posted by a reader on Amazon, Goodreads, and the Dreamspinner Press web site:

“If we’re lucky, we get to read a book that blazes a trail through us. Whether they make us laugh, cry, or even think a little differently, these books still leave a mark on us days, maybe even weeks after we’ve read it. For me, this was one of those books. It did everything I ask of a book: it took me away on a sweet journey about two high school boys, made me feel about their relationship, and gave me an ending I’ll never forget. This book made me think. It affected me, and that’s what writing and authorship is all about. Mr. Cosentino, you should be very proud of what you created here. You gave me beautiful characters, real and flawed, who are memorable and who made mistakes. They could’ve made better choices, but they didn’t because they were human. Authors strive to make characters who are as close to humanity as possible. They hope to make character-driven stories, not plot-driven stories. You’ve done exactly that. Thank you for Harold. Thank you for Mario. Thank you for writing this book. And please, don’t stop writing.”

How and where do you write?

Since I am a college professor and busy during the day, I write in the evenings. Thankfully I have a cozy, quiet study with a window seat, cherry wood mantel fireplace, cherry wood bookcase, and cherry wood desk. As an actor and writer, I tend to become my characters. As if playing a role, I ask myself about their motivations, actions, objectives, fears, likes, passions, and thought processes. My spouse is accustomed to hearing various voices coming from study. He relates since he is an audio book performer.

Who are your favorite authors and why?

Armistead Maupin has an amazing flair for writing eccentric, loveable characters with engaging and realistic dialogue. I try to remember that in my own writing. I’ve read all nine TALES OF THE CITY books by Armistead Maupin, every Agatha Christie novel and short story, and all of Greg Herren’s MM mystery novels. I also love the three Rainbow Boys MM young adult novels by Alex Sanchez.

What advice would you give to other writers in the M/M genre?

I love reading and writing stories with engaging characters who I want to spend time with. I recommend letting your characters talk to one another and seeing what happens. An outline is simply an outline. Don’t be afraid to deviate from it. Also, a romance story needs much more than romance. Don’t forget the humor, and the twists and turns in the story. Finally, until gays have equal civil rights, a little politicking never hurt.

What tips would you give other writers, when creating comedy in their own writing?

When a reader finishes a book, he/she should be satisfied that the various parts equaled the whole, rather than the author pulling an ending out of the hat. I recommend not writing jokes to try to be funny. Let the humor come out of the situations and the characters naturally. People are funny, but only in real life, believable situations. And don’t forget the yang side of comedy is tragedy, and find the emotional core of your characters and story. As the old expression goes, “Make ‘em laugh then make ‘em cry.” That’s why I love Bittersweet Dreams books.

How do you imagine the ideal reader of your book?

My ideal reader is a lover of a good story, someone who craves being swept away and becoming part of the novel. My reader enjoys humor, and being taken on a roller coaster ride. Finally, my reader relishes in captivating characters and earth-shattering romance, as she/he willingly enters the portal of my book. That’s why I love hearing from my readers!

What inspired you to start writing, especially your novella AN INFATUATION?

As a kid I played make believe constantly. “Let’s put on a show!” was my motto. I played all the characters—male and female. Hm, that explains a lot. Thankfully my parents and teachers indulged me rather than committed me. I always enjoyed improvisation as an actor, and I see writing as an extension of that. It also keeps the mind sharp, which is much appreciated as I get older.

When I told my mother I wanted to be an actor, she said, “Take this knife and stick it through my heart.” I did it anyway, and acted on stage and screen with stars like Bruce Willis, Rosie O’Donnell, Holland Taylor, Jason Robards, and Nathan Lane. As my students say, “You were cute when you were young!” Anyway, it occurred to me that acting is storytelling in the same way that writing is storytelling, so I decided to give playwriting a try. When I told my mother I wanted to write fiction, she said, “Don’t you have anything better to do?” I wonder if Shakespeare’s mother said that?

I knew my first novella would be a bit autobiographical, but have a universal theme. Hasn’t everyone been infatuated with someone? I was thinking back to my high school days, and how difficult it was back then for a gay teen before GLSEN, PFLAG, and Will and Grace. Lab partners, gym locker rooms, and club meetings where super important. At my high school reunion, I realized things weren’t what they seemed back then. A story was born. It began as a one-act play, which I expanded and morphed into a novella.

Who are the main characters in AN INFATUATION?

Harold is based on me. Actually, I really admire Harold’s resilience, honesty, intelligence, wit, and ability to keep going in trying situations. His heart may be broken, but his spirit always stays intact. Harold’s devotion to his spouse, Stuart, is admirable, as is his honesty about his teenage infatuation with Mario. I love that the story spans twenty years so we see Harold (and Mario) develop and mature.

Mario is a combination of many supposedly straight, perfect guys who gay guys so easily become infatuated with every day. I love that Harold and Mario come full circle at their high school reunion.

Which character was the most fun to write?

Stuart was great fun to write, because he is based on my spouse who is totally organized and a real list maker, but also sweet, creative, and caring. He creates an itinerary for our trips in ten minute time blocks!

Who was the hardest character to write?

It is always hard for me to write homophobic characters. How nonsensical is it for someone to spend his/her time, money, and energy trying to hurt, belittle, or take away the rights of someone else? In most cases, the homophobic person is gay him/herself, and due to internalized homophobia, is battling with him/herself via the gay target. That is the case with the two homophobic characters in my novel.

What other books have you written? And what are you working on now?

My MF mystery/romance series, the Jana Lane mysteries, premieres March 18 with PAPER DOLL from Whiskey Creek Press. PORCELAIN DOLL will follow shortly. My MM mystery/romance/comedy series, the Nicky and Noah mysteries, premieres this summer with DRAMA QUEEN from Lethe Press. DRAMA MUSCLE will follow shortly. I just finished a new MM romance Bittersweet Dreams novella, A SHOOTING STAR, and am currently working on a new MM romance novella, A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. I am also working on the third Nicky and Noah mystery book (DRAMA CRUISE), and the third Jana Lane mystery book (SATIN DOLL).

Which roles do you want to play in the movie versions of your books?

I think my books would make terrific films! Here are the roles I would play:

AN INFATUATION: Mr. Ringwood, high school principal
PAPER DOLL: Simon Huckby, movie agent
DRAMA QUEEN: Martin Anderson, college professor/department head
A SHOOTING STAR: Professor Katzer, college professor
A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: walk by in a cameo a la Alfred Hitchcock
So come on movie producers!

Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

Winning an Academy Award for Best Screenwriter and Best Featured Actor (Mr. Ringwood) for AN INFATUATION. (You have to dream big)

What would you like to say to your readers?

I know this story will touch your heart, because it’s everyone’s story. We’ve all had an infatuation, and this novel is a testament to that. Please email me via my web site and tell me about your experience with the book. I also love answering questions about the novella, so let them fly. With his ten-year high school reunion approaching, Harold wonders whether Mario will be as muscular, sexy, and tantalizing as he remembers. As a teenager, it was love at first sight for Harold while tutoring football star Mario, until homophobia and bullying drove Mario deep into the closet. Now they’re both married men. Mario, a model, is miserable with his producer wife, while Harold, a teacher, is perfectly content with his businessman husband, Stuart. When the two meet again, will the old flame reignite, setting Harold’s comfortable life ablaze? How can Harold be happy with Stuart when he is still infatuated with his Adonis, his first love, Mario? Harold faces this seemingly impossible situation with inimitable wit, tenderness, and humor as he attempts to reconcile the past and the future.

Joe Cosentino is the author of An Infatuation (Dreamspinner Press), Paper Doll, the first Jana Lane mystery (Whiskey Creek Press), Drama Queen, the first Nicky and Noah mystery (Lethe Press-releasing this summer), and The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (Eldridge Plays and Musicals). He has appeared in principal acting roles in film, television, and theatre, opposite stars such as Bruce Willis, Rosie O’Donnell, Nathan Lane, Holland Taylor, and Jason Robards. His one-act plays, Infatuation and Neighbor, were performed in New York City. He wrote The Perils of Pauline educational film (Prentice Hall Publishers). Joe is currently Head of the Department/Professor at a college in upstate New York, and is happily married. His upcoming novels are Porcelain Doll (the second Jana Lane mystery) and Drama Muscle (the second Nicky and Noah mystery).

Excerpt:

One Friday afternoon I accidentally ran into my hero in the boy’s locker room. I’d had enough of the big guys banging me into gym lockers, pushing me into cold showers, and hanging me from the gym ropes. So I was on my way to give Mr. Adoni a note from Dr. Dlorah excusing me from gym class for the remainder of the school year (due to my highly contagious disease being studied by my doctor in Guatemala, where he could not be reached for the next year).
The locker room smelled of an odd combination of soap, cologne, sweat, and desire. Mario was getting ready for football practice, standing at his gym locker without a combination lock on it. Nobody would dare to break into it (Except for me that one time I smelled his jock strap. Okay maybe it was a few times, but not more than ten.). Mario slid his T-shirt (red today) over his thick, black hair and threw it on the nearby bench. No longer harnessed by cotton, his arm, back, chest, and neck muscles swelled to full size. I was half hidden behind the adjoining row of lockers, wearing my usual green and blue flannel shirt and brown corduroy pants. Mario, who wasn’t looking in my direction, said something really beautiful to me that I will never forget. “Hi.”
“Did you just? Oh. Hi. Hello. Good afternoon. Nice to see you. I mean, change with you.” I looked down at the floor (but cheated a bit) as Mario kicked off his boots, slipped off his jeans then threw them in the lucky locker. His red underpants (briefs) revealed ample manhood. This is better than the newspaper’s underwear ads!
“Good gym class today with Mr. Adonis, I mean, Mr. Adoni.” Did I just say that? “Harold High.”
“Hi.”
“High.” How can I get my pulse down to 260?
“Hi.” Mario reached into his locker for his sweat clothes.
Shouldn’t people be doing that for you? “Oh, my last name is High. Like a kite.” How can I stop my arms from waving like an airport flagger on speed?
“Mario Ginetti. Like nothin’ else imaginable.” Mario smiled, revealing a row of perfectly white teeth, and held the sweat clothes in his hands as if he was mortal.
“I know. I watch your body play.” Why can’t I stop talking? “I mean, I watch you play … football … on the field … in your football outfit.” I feel like Michelangelo with his David!
As Mario put on his sweats, I continued to sweat.
“I’m voting for your body … I mean I’m voting for you for president of your … our … the student body.” I need my jaw wired shut. “I’m your lab partner in Chemistry class. Ms. Hungry’s class … I mean Ms. Hunsley’s class.”
His olive-colored face glistened as Mario’s face registered recognition—of me! “I thought I knew you from somewheres. Hey, thanks for doing the lab reports.”
“It’s my honor … I mean my pleasure. It’s fine. If you need help putting up posters for your campaign, I can … ”
Having just tied the laces of his sneakers, Mario stood absolutely still. He looked at me as if he was staring into my heart and somehow knew what I was feeling. “I gotta take a wicked piss.”
Can I watch?
“Thanks for helping me out, Buddy.” He slammed the locker door and left.
He called me, Buddy! My heart was as soft and silly as putty that Mario held in the palm of his hand like his soap on a rope.

About Susan Mac Nicol:

Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, self confessed geek and nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…

She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason. She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.

Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.

In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever -Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.

About Sights and Sinners and The Men of London…

SMSight and Sinners_4

THE MEN OF LONDON
From Charing Cross to Waterloo, there’s no escaping love.

SEEING THROUGH…

28-year-old Draven Samuels has a tragic past, but as an investigator with a high-profile London company he now gets what he wants. Tough, sarcastic, and sceptical, he has no patience for lies and even less for people who waste his time. Even if they’re as beautiful as the wild and dark-haired Taylor Abelard. Especially when they’re talking over the body of a murder victim.

THE DARKNESS

Psychic Taylor Abelard is used to people calling him a freak. He can see past events and feel the ghostly vibrations of people close to him who’ve passed on. It’s why he doesn’t get too close to the living. But this time, against his better judgment, despite Draven’s mocking rejoinders, Taylor will get closer than ever before. The mystery surrounding a dead friend will lead the two men down a dark and seedy trail of blackmail and lies. Add in the heartbreak of a family tragedy, and events lead them straight into each other’s arms. By the end of this night, all their demons will have risen—and been banished with the dawn.

EXCERPT – SIGHT AND SINNERS

The man Taylor was blowing definitely didn’t know how the hell to keep quiet. Taylor’s lips were wrapped around his dick, while above him a man stood, panting and moaning, turning the air blue with his curses. Taylor stopped what he was doing, causing the blowjob recipient to groan in dismay, and glared at the sweaty face above him.

“For Christ’s sake, Georgie, can you stop it with the fucking porn noises?” He glanced around him nervously. “This is where I work, damn it, and if anyone hears you they’ll come outside to see what all the fuss is about.”

Georgie’s wide eyes cast a quick glance around the deserted alleyway behind ‘Music Mayhem’ where Taylor was employed, then looked down at Taylor kneeling between his legs.

“Sorry, mate, it’s just that you’re so damn good at this and it’s been a while.”

Is It Time to Man Up? Whining About Snowing and The Week Ahead At Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Ahhhhh, snow!

February 22 snow

Yep.  It’s still snowing.  And here in DC MD VA  area, we are still whining about it snowing.  Apparently to the amusement of most of the country, including Jimmy Fallon, who is stunned to find out that a few inches or 6 can shut down all the area schools, county governments and yes, the Federal Government as well.  Hey, no one knows how to panic in a snowstorm like the DC Metro area does.  Even though we know that February is traditionally our  snowiest month of the year, we still act surprised that it will, in some cases, actually snow here.  Our meteorologists go into commando mode, staying over night and generally looking like they tied one on because they are sleeping at the office trying to gather every last bit of data they can that will tell us, that there will be a chance of “measurable snow” heading towards us.  We have even been known to cancel school when there is no snow because they said it was coming our way.

FullSizeRender

Yes, that’s right.  Schools cancelled because of the “threat” of snow.  Why are we  surprised that Boston and other snowbound cities are calling us on our perpetual  winter state of wimpiness?  We are wimpy about snow and we should embrace that about ourselves!  We can empty grocery and liquor stores faster than you can say approaching cold front.  Take that, Boston, with your seven FEET of snow!  We are airlifting groceries to people even now because of ice and snow!  We have a Metro system, very pretty one at that, that seems to feel that it belongs in Miami and only runs under appropriately warm weather conditions.  I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find our polar bears at the National Zoo are complaining that they need ear muffs and larger latte’s.  Even my DC Metro Romance Meet up got cancelled, except for some hardy authors, (looking at you, Pearl Love, TC Blue and Marguerite Labbe) who scoff at such weather conditions.  You are my heroes!

http://player.theplatform.com/p/NnzsPC/widget/select/media/R30dQ0G1pe4O

Even Kirby who loves the snow disappears (hey, white dog, white snow…go figure) only to reappear quickly, saying no doubt in doggy language, “its too cold out there”.  Oh well, that just gives me plenty of time to read, knit and binge watch GoT and The Blacklist.
