Hi everyone! First let me give Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words a great big thank you for hosting my cover reveal. Thanks guys!

I’m super excited to be here today to show off the beautiful cover for my upcoming release. Lost Souls Found comes out on April 17th, and it’s the next book in my Requiem Inc. series. When I wrote the first one, Ghost of a Chance, I didn’t know if I’d get the opportunity to write Sam and Michael’s story. But their relationship was important to the characters, so I wrote in Sam’s crush and some hints as to how Michael feels about him. So I was thrilled when Dreamspinner gave me the green light for Lost Souls Found because I got to bring their journey to love to the page.

Their relationship isn’t the most easy one. They definitely both have some learning to do. But there’s no doubt they’ll get there in the end.

And to showcase this story, Aaron Anderson worked his magic again and brought a gorgeous cover to life. The cover model is how I picture Sam, and he’s got a mischievous streak. Just look at that smirk! Aaron also did a great job mirroring the look of the first book, while making this cover wholly it’s own. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the right one.

You don’t have to have read Ghost of a Chance to understand Lost Souls found; they are both standalone. I recommend they be read in order so you can get a little background first, though it’s not strictly necessary. Either way, I hope you get a chance to pick up this book when it comes out.

Blurb:

Dying is all in a day’s work. Love is more dangerous.

Ghostwalker Sam Jones has been half in love with Michael King since he started working at Requiem Inc. But Michael is his boss and a Guardian, to boot. Sam thinks they could make it work anyway, but Michael uses his position and his age to keep Sam at arm’s length.

When Sam continues to volunteer for the most dangerous cases, Michael has to intervene. He tells himself he’s just doing his job, but he’s always seen Sam as more than another operative, and he can’t bear the thought of not taking his chance. The connection between them has been strong from the beginning, and Michael’s telepathy adds unexpected depth and an edge to their new romance, but working together while they try to build their relationship might be the hardest part of their job if they don’t make some sacrifices.

A MelanieM Release Day Review: Lover, Lover ( Dreamcatchers story) by Liv Olteano

Rating: 3.25 stars out of 5

A Dreamcatchers Tale

Twin souls reunited.

Drew’s always been a fighter: first in martial arts competitions, and now as a dreamcatcher—keeping the people of Seattle safe from spaga attacks that would drain their life force in their sleep. All he has to do to become a full member of Team 32 is complete his first mission.

But the first person he must defend is his ex, Angelo… the only man Drew ever loved, even if he was the one to leave. Drew never got over Angelo, and it seems Angelo might feel the same, despite the heartbreak he suffered at Drew’s hands.

As the chase after a powerful and resourceful caster hits close to home, old feelings resurface. But if Angelo learns of the dreamcatchers, he’ll be a target for the spaga. And how can he trust Drew now that Drew’s keeping bigger secrets than ever?

I’m a fan of Liv Olteano and her Leader Murder series, so I was really looking forward to Lover, Lover, another story in Dreamspinner’s Dreamspun Beyond series.  One of the things I notice it mentions is that its a  Dreamcatchers tale but I can find no mention of previous stories so I can only  assume this is the first of a series.

That might explain several things I noticed about this story.  I have always loved Olteano’s worldbuilding.  She has a wonderful imagination and pulls from so many different mythologies to construct a fascinating and compelling universe to dive into.  In Lover, Lover, she has  started to do the same with her  Teams of Dreamcatcher fighters and their  “boss”.  In this case, the foundation is loosely native american, and the author layers upon that her monsters, her fighters (and all the ramifications that comes with acceptance into the Unit,) and  above all the amazing  arachnid Goddess/Boss/Head of their Region.  All this comes complete with training into the Guild, chants, elaborate settings (think gorgeous weblike interiors)….clearly Olteano has given much thought to their construction.

But I still was left wanting more. It’s still all very vague about the spaga, and the other creatures they are chasing and killing.  Plus there were holes left about the men’s ages etc.  Yes, I needed more information.

So all that attention to world building indicates that Lover, Lover is building up to a series where the other men in the team and story would find their HEA as well, hopefully.

But for me, that left the characterizations of and the romance between Angelo and Drew lacking.  I just don’t think the author had enough pages to do both here.  Neither Angelo or Drew felt very substantial and because of that, I just was never very invested in their  romance.  For me, Lady Arachnid (no not her name) was far more interesting and layered a personality then both of them. From her vivid descriptions to her lively airs, she stood out among them all.

Then there was the ending.  That resolution of the storyline was so rushed that it made your head spin.  No , consider this a case where the world building came to the rescue here because as sweet as the characters were, they just didn’t feel fleshed out, nor was there past history to glomb onto to make you feel you knew them.

Still I’ll look for another story to see if this Dreamcatcher world deepens and what  further adventures await the troop.  If you like sweet paranormal romance with really no angst you might want to check this one out.

Our Interview with Liv Olteano – Lover, Lover tour

  • What traits do you find the most interesting in someone? Do you write them into your characters?

Hmm… if I’m honest, the most interesting thing I find about someone is their set of contradictions.

I’m sure we’ve all noticed this: the most interesting people always have some sets of contradictions around which their personality is built. Sometimes these contradictions are harder to pinpoint, and other times they wear them proudly and for all to see. If someone has no contradictions I can identify, I generally tend to believe them to be dishonest or phony somehow.

So I’m aware I also write characters that feature contradictions, because by reflex I build characters that come off as real people to me. In fact, when I write a certain story, I see those characters as real people, and explore them just as I do when I meet someone new.

I’m aware some look for these inconsistencies as proof of faulty building – in fictional characters as well as in real people – but I must disagree. There’s no such thing as linear anything when it comes to real life, so why should fiction try for it?

  • Ever drunk written a chapter and then read it the next day and still been happy with it?  Trust me there’s a whole world of us drunk writers dying to know.

The simple truth of the matter is I address the toughest parts of a story – those pesky bits that give me trouble – when I’m not actually drunk but just a bit tipsy. There’s something about the altered chemistry of the brain, the lowered inhibitions, and the more risk-prone thought process of such times that simply makes me breeze through the rough patches. Ideas flow differently; I don’t bump my head against anything – genre, tropes, plot outline – and just immerse myself in the joy of writing what I feel. I call it feel-writing, because right then I simply let the characters and story do their thing without any sort of authorial intervention. It’s exhilarating, and the highest degree of freedom I’ve ever personally experienced – and writing, as a process, is in itself a form of freedom so that’s saying something.

I don’t think I’ve ever read the material written like that the next day to find it not up to par. Those parts tend to become my favorite ones of that particular story, in fact.

  • With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain?  To get away?  To move past?  To widen our knowledge?  Why do you write?

I think that for each story, the answer is different. In fact, I think that for each chapter or significant scene of the same story, there are different reasons behind the writing.

When I was writing Lover, Lover for instance, a close friend was contemplating an imminent breakup. I already knew the story would be a second chance romance, but the details of the relationship and how things would mend was a total unknown to me at that point. I don’t like to outline the relationship part of my stories, because the exploring as I go makes it all feel a lot more fun and authentic to me.

In my mind were all these thoughts resulting from talks my friend and I had about breakups, about where all the love goes and how it slips away; about all the shared memories and times – how can one move on from everything they’ve known for years of their life, how they can rebuild and why they feel the need or desire to do so.

I’d thought about these things a lot, so I wanted to explore not how people break up or why they would get back together, but what might happen when my characters – Drew and Angelo – reunite some years after their breakup, when they still have feelings for each other. So I wrote the story to find that out.

Blurb:

Twin souls reunited.

Drew’s always been a fighter: first in martial arts competitions, and now as a dreamcatcher—keeping the people of Seattle safe from spaga attacks that would drain their life force in their sleep. All he has to do to become a full member of Team 32 is complete his first mission.

Excerpt

“I put the phone back in my pocket and looked toward the bed. The victim stirred beneath the covers. I knew they were supposed to be sound asleep, but I held my breath nonetheless. It was really weird to stand and look at someone who was sleeping—I felt a bit creepy. The person had to be turning on the other side or something, but then the head poked up. The bedroom windows were positioned so the light from the street hit his face—because I saw clearly it was a man. He blinked a few times and looked at me, his face slack from sleep and probably the shock of staring at someone standing in his bedroom. He had hazel eyes and dark brown hair, and his skin looked just as deliciously tan as I remembered it. His face had changed a bit. The angles were sharper and the lines more prominent. He looked more grown-up somehow. But it was him, without a doubt: Angelo, my first real steady man. The one that got away—well, more accurately, the one I’d walked out on five years ago. Even if he could see me, the red charm still being active, he was supposed to go right back to sleep. If he’d remember anything at all, he’d be convinced it was a dream.

“Drew? Is that you?”

My heart skipped a beat or five. He was most definitely not going back to sleep. He was freaking talking to me! I panicked and quickly swallowed the green charm. I found myself immediately back at our home base, in the webs room, my heart pounding like hell.

Claw poked his head into the room. “Hey, man. Back already?”

I stared at his long, straight black hair, at his black eyes. I’d had a bit of a crush on Claw when I first met him. Something about his dark skin had always reminded me of Angelo’s permanent tan. But Claw’s black eyes with their intense, brooding gaze had never been like Angelo’s glimmering hazel ones. I felt my stomach tighten. Just thinking about his name did things to me, all these years later. I was such a huge moron—they had to invent a whole new league just for me.

“Come into the kitchen,” Claw said. “We’ve got a bit of a celebration going on here. You finally popped your dreamcatcher cherry after all.”

I smiled while my pulse spiked. Oh, crap. Way to end my very first mission—I hadn’t done the cleansing. I’d panicked and fled, without doing the cleansing. Goddamn it! For tonight, having used my red charm there would keep the home shielded. But without the cleansing it would be a beacon to all spaga, calling their attention to the premises and the residents, starting next nightfall. I had to get back there before that. No way was I going to tell Claw I’d screwed up on my first ever mission. No way. I just had to hope Aashi wouldn’t think to check up on my work. She didn’t, usually—at least as far as I knew. I could fix this.

I went into the kitchen where Claw and our other teammate, Taka, were holding up glasses of champagne. I took mine and we toasted to me not being the junior anymore. We didn’t hang around too much after that, going to our rooms instead. Claw had to attend the daily dreamcatcher leaders meeting for the Seattle area. Taka probably went back to his room to read—he was always reading, it seemed to me. And I just went to my room, hoping that the excitement would wind down and I’d be able to sleep.

It took a while. I kept thinking about five years back. I kept remembering nights spent with Angelo, and the sweet mornings after. All the things I now yearned for, and from which I’d run away then. I’d been dealing with a lot of confusion at the time. I hadn’t been able to find my center, and the steady connection between us had only made me feel more off-kilter when it came to everything else. I’d needed to sort myself out. So I walked out on him and tried to do just that.

It seemed to me that before shaking shit off and figuring yourself out, you had to get piles of shit a mile high weighing you down so you’d have the proper incentive. So I’d worked on my pile until it was nice and large. And then I’d shaken it off and figured out who the hell I was and what I wanted from life. Sad thing was, in my rare moments of honesty, I knew part of what I wanted was what I’d had with Angelo.

The look in his eyes tonight kept overlapping with the look in his eyes the day I’d moved out. It had hurt to walk out that day. I could imagine how it must’ve hurt him to see me do it. I had to make amends somehow. I had to keep him safe.

I finally fell asleep with the image of his hazel eyes running through my mind over and over again.”

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Interview with j.leigh bailey

I’d like to start with a big “Thank you!” to Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for having me here today to celebrate the upcoming release of Chasing Thunderbird, the second book in my Shifter U paranormal series.

  • With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain? To get away? To move past? To widen our knowledge? Why do you write?

I write for the same reason I read: ESCAPE. Honestly, sometimes the real world sucks—you just have to turn on the news or review your Twitter feed to see this—but books, especially romance novels, provide an escape like no other. As a reader, I love knowing that no matter what happens to my characters, no matter what challenges they face, or how bad the bad guy is, there will be a Happy Ever After. As a writer, it’s very much the same. One of the frustrating parts of watching the news or seeing people be hateful to and about each other, is how helpless it can make you feel. There’s only so much a person can do, and sometimes it feels like it’s not enough. As a writer, I take back some of that control. Sure. I can make the world my characters live in tough, but then, with a few strokes of my fingers, I can make it all right again. I add a little heart ache and a dash of angst, but then I turn around and create love. There’s nothing more rewarding than creating a world of love and hope, even if it’s fiction. Sometimes, especially because it’s fiction. As a writer, I can create that same escape mechanism that I’ve relied on as a reader. Now, hopefully other can escape reality for a while in a world of my choosing, in a world where love and hope really can conquer all.

  • Have you ever had an issue in real life and worked through it by writing it out in a story?

I’ve been struggling with depression since I was a teenager. For years, I used romance novels to avoid dealing with the negative thoughts and emotions in my head. Novels were an escape, for sure, but they also became a crutch—and not necessarily a healthy one—for me. Eventually I learned better coping mechanisms (counseling, antidepressants, exercise, etc). One of the things that works really well for me is writing. I’m a huge believer in using writing—whether it’s journaling, poetry, short stories, novels, etc.—as a way to help cope with depression and anxiety. What it does for me—and others—is allow us to process different situations, thoughts, and scenarios with some emotional distance. I can take some of the negative emotions inside myself, give them to another character, and let them deal with it for a while. This distances enables me to stop internalizing things and to apply logic to an emotional situation. I discovered one of my emotional triggers almost by accident when writing one of my books. And as soon as I realized what I’d written, and what my characters were doing, I had a better understanding of myself. And with that distance, I learned to recognize my own triggers before I had too much time to get sucked into the downward spiral. It’s not a cure-all by any means, but writing has given me the means to process things in a healthier way.

  • Does research play a role in choosing which genre you write? Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

Writing paranormal creatures (like shapeshifters) in a contemporary is the best of both worlds. It allows me to get sucked into research and to get lost in my imagination. The best part of paranormal romance is getting to make stuff up. If you want a man to transform into a buffalo, it can totally happen. If you want to make up crazy snake-worshipping cults seeking immortality? Why not.  On the other hand, writing shapeshifters can start to get a little tricky, depending on how realistic (natural) you want your characters to be in their animal form. Which means research. I sometimes giggle at the random animal-related factoids I’ve had to research. For example, which is faster? A buffalo or a coyote? Answer: they both top out at about 40 miles an hour. Or, how many crows would you need to roughly equal the weight of an average sized man? Answer: the average crow weighs between .7 and 1.4 pounds. So if we average that to say 1 pound per bird, and if we figure the average human male is about 175 pounds, then it would take 175 (give or take) crows to equal the weight of an average-sized man. THIS is the kind of research I enjoy. In CHASING THUNDERBIRD I was also able to dig into many of the different Native American stories of thunderbirds and the great horned serpents to help create the origin story of Ford’s thunderbird and the bad guys. So, yeah, I love that my series gives me to best of both.

  • What’s the wildest scene you’ve imagined and did it make it into a story?

The wildest scene I ever pictured did, in fact, end up in one of my books. In fact, it ended up in STALKING BUFFALO BILL. At the end of the book there’s a scene where a number of members of the local shifter populations (coyotes, eagles, wolves, bob cats, bears, and a ticked-off thunderbird) band together to defeat the bad guys. Though it’s not quite as zany, I got the idea for some of the shenanigans from a memory of the Dr. Doolittle 2 movie with Eddie Murphy. When I first imagined the scene, I snorted because I thought it just might be a little over the top. In the end, it turned out to be one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever written.

  • What’s next for you as a writer?

The third book in my Shifter U series will be coming out from Dreamspun Beyond this summer. It’s called THE NIGHT OWL AND THE INSOMNIAC. One of the characters, Owen, is briefly introduced in CHASING THUNDERBIRD. Here’s the blurb:

Long nights lead to intrigue… and infatuation.

Chronically ill with a mysterious condition, Yusuf “Joey” Franke escapes his smothering family and doctors by moving halfway across the country to enroll in Cody College. Not long after arriving on campus, some of his symptoms disappear, only to be replaced by debilitating insomnia. Joey spends his nights wandering the halls of his dormitory and hanging out with gregarious and affable Owen, who works the night shift.

When he suddenly shifts from a sick college kid to a massive Asiatic lion, Joey discovers another side to Cody College—it’s a haven for shifters like himself… and like Owen, a part-time great horned owl. And being a shifter is hereditary, which means his parents have some explaining to do.

When Joey and Owen investigate, they discover more than they bargained for—a family deception, a dangerous enemy with international connections, and a love that might be too new to survive the backlash.

So, something I’ve been asking people, just for fun, if you were a shifter, what would you shift into?

Giveaway

**GIVEAWAY** I’ll be giving away a digital copy of Stalking Buffalo Bill to a random commenter who shares with me, if you could be a shapeshifter, what kind would you be (and why!). Giveaway will close on 2/17.

BLURB

A Shifter U Tale

A legendary love.

Ornithology professor Simon Coleman’s reputation is at risk, and the only way to save his name is to prove thunderbirds are more than creatures of Native American myth. Grad student and part-time barista Ford Whitney has a lot on his plate, but it’s also his duty to make sure the resident bird nerd doesn’t discover shape-shifters—like himself—live on campus.

When a series of incidents related to Simon’s search put him in harm’s way, Ford’s instincts kick in, and they become closer than is strictly proper for student and teacher. Ford is forced to reveal his secrets to Simon, and their relationship is put to the test—Simon must choose between salvaging his reputation and protecting the man who protected him….

EXCERPT

Things were not all they seemed at Cody College. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what didn’t fit, but it took less than a week into the new semester before I reached that inescapable conclusion. Maybe it was the scraps of torn clothing I found next to a tree in the green space between the parking lot and the sciences building on Monday. Or the discarded jeans I found on Wednesday.

Or maybe it was the fox chilling on a boulder by the dining hall, casually watching people go in and out on Thursday. Students streamed past me, clearly oblivious to the wildlife hanging out on campus. The fox wasn’t very concerned about my attention. An ear twitched as it met my eyes. A couple of kids holding hands crossed the space between the wild animal and me, not taken aback in the least about the fox on a rock.

Was it tame? Maybe someone’s pet? A mascot? But, no, the college’s mascot was a buffalo. I inched closer, checking to see if there was a collar amid the orange fur.

The fox’s tongue lolled out in a canine grin. Okay, seriously? The fox was laughing at me?

A guy in a Cody College hoodie stopped and shook his head at the fox. Thank goodness I wasn’t the only one to see it. Hoodie guy laughed. “Dude, you’ve got balls, man. If Dean Thomas finds out, you’ll be screwed.”

I turned to demand an explanation since the comment was completely out of left field, but he wasn’t looking at me. Was he talking to the fox?

“I should probably call animal control,” I said, deciding to ignore the guy who spoke to foxes.

Hoodie Guy burst into laughter. The fox rolled its eyes—it rolled its fricking eyes—and hopped off his perch and sauntered—sauntered!—away from the dining hall.

I thought Hoodie Guy was going to hyperventilate, he laughed so hard.

Nope. Things were definitely a little odd at Cody College.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Kris T. Bethke on tour for her story Ghost of a Chance (Requiem Inc. #1).  Welcome, Kris!

✒︎

Hi there! I’m Kris T. Bethke, and a great big thanks for spending a little time with me today. Thanks to the gang here at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for hosting me!

My newest release, Ghost of a Chance, is out now, and there’s a lot I love about this story. But the truth is, it almost didn’t happen. I’d started a version of this story several years ago and almost immediately shelved it, knowing it wasn’t working. But when I saw the submission call for this new line, I knew it was time to bring it out and dust it off again.

The original premise wasn’t mine to begin with. It was, in fact, and idea my brother had. He told me about this idea a dozen or so years ago and it stuck with me. The picture he painted with that scene he shared with me haunted me for a decade. I thought about it off and on throughout the intervening years. And then I asked him if I could have it, because I wanted to write a story around it.

So I started to, but as I said, it just wasn’t working. So I put it away and tried to forget about it. Except, just like the original idea, it wouldn’t leave me alone. When I decided to write trying writing it again, just about everything changed. Except the most important details. A man’s job requires him to die, he doesn’t want a new partner, and he helps lost souls cross over.

Blake Jones emerged from the ashes of that failed first draft, and Derek Scott stepped in to pick up the pieces. Once I had these two MCs, everything else fell into place. That’s not to say this story wasn’t a lot of work. It was, but the most enjoyable kind. I needed to figure out the world, how it worked, and how these guys were going to fall in love while doing their job.

Especially because the salient details weren’t something I’d ever seen before.

I loved writing this story, and I loved creating the world in which they lived. The first try wasn’t right, but I’m so glad I didn’t give up on my instincts that this was a story that needed telling. If I’ve done my job, you’ll enjoy reading it just as much.

I hope you get a chance to check it out.

Blurb:

Only love makes life worth living—over and over again.

Ghostwalker Blake Jones dies every day. It’s his job and how he helps trapped souls cross over. But to return to life, he needs an anchor. His new partner, Derek Scott, is a surprise. Not only is he male, but his appearance belies a caring and gentle heart underneath. Despite attraction and a strengthening relationship, they know they shouldn’t take things further.

But there’s a big difference between knowing and doing.

Their growing love presents a problem, though not the one they expect. Blake and Derek have to decide if they should take their relationship to the most permanent level—an unbreakable metaphysical bond. Doing so offers both risk and unimaginable reward. Can Blake let go of his fears and put his complete trust in Derek in order to have the happily ever after he’s always craved?

An Alisa Release Day Review: Ghost of a Chance (Requiem Inc. #1) by Kris T. Bethke

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

Only love makes life worth living—over and over again.

Ghostwalker Blake Jones dies every day. It’s his job and how he helps trapped souls cross over. But to return to life, he needs an anchor. His new partner, Derek Scott, is a surprise. Not only is he male, but his appearance belies a caring and gentle heart.

I absolutely loved this story.  Blake is used to people leaving him, his only constant has been his brother and boss and fright from the get go he wants to see if Derek has it in him to stay.  Derek is willing to take that bet from the start and exceed anyone’s expectations.

Blake’s biggest fear is someone he loves leaving him, his parents kicked him and his brother out after they learned about the ghostwalker gene and all his lovers leave once they realize he is a ghostwalker.  Derek has always wanted someone to take care of completely, he begins while they are sequestered but gets more of a chance to take care of Blake in every way as their relationship evolves.  If only they were more informed about the anchor bond.

Blake and Derek are wonderful.  Blake finding the support and strength he so desperately needs in Derek and seeing him finally able to put aside his fears was perfect.  Derek is so grounded and it’s in his nature to take care of others but he can tell from the beginning that it means more with Blake.  I could feel both of these characters emotions throughout the whole story; Blake’s fear when he had a problem in the spirit realm and Derek’s when Blake came back to life to quickly are the biggest and made my heart stop for a second.  This story is a great beginning to this new series and hope it continues.  I really hope to see Blake’s brother, Sam, find the happiness he is looking for too.

The cover art by Aaron Anderson is great and gives a wonderful visual of Blake.

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words – Interview with Jenn Burke

  • How much of yourself goes into a character?

I think all writers put something of themselves into their characters. I tend to take one of my traits—usually a flaw—and give it to my MC. For example, Luca’s unbending stubbornness in The Gryphon King’s Consort is all me.

  • Does research play a role into choosing which genre you write? Do you enjoy research or prefer making up your worlds and cultures?

Although I like to make up my own worlds and cultures, that doesn’t mean there’s no research involved. I strongly believe that science fiction or paranormal elements need something of a root in reality in order to be consistent and relatable. But there’s such a thing as too much research, too—especially if you’re constantly getting stuck in a research rabbit hole and not actually writing.

  • Has your choice of childhood or teenage reading genres carried into your own choices for writing?

Absolutely yes. I didn’t discover science fiction until I was in my pre-teens, but I devoured stories by Madeleine L’Engle, Monica Hughes, Jane Yolen, Anne McCaffery and others, and they definitely influenced what I love to write. As I got older, I graduated to paranormal and urban fantasy stories, and some of my favourite authors include Tanya Huff, Mercedes Lackey, Charles de Lint, Kelley Armstrong, and more.

  • Do you read romances, as a teenager and as an adult?

Definitely. I didn’t really get into romances until I was an older teen, but I loved the old Silhouette Shadows paranormal category romances. I do like contemporary romances, but my true love is romances with a speculative side to them—science fiction romance, paranormal romance, fantasy romance, etc.

  • Do you like HFN or HEA? And why?

If it’s a romance, it has to have a HFN or HEA. Full stop. But I don’t prefer one of those types of endings over the other—it all depends on what fits with the story. Sometimes a HFN is what makes the most sense, especially for a short story, novella, or a multi-book series. But I think a standalone novel or the final book of a series needs to have a strong HEA—that’s the payoff for your reader.

  • Do you have a favourite among your own stories? And why?

I loved writing Inversion Point (book four of the Chaos Station series) for a number of reasons. Zed and Felix’s relationship crisis was finally resolved in book three, and this was the first book where they really had a chance to start looking at the future. Zed faces his first challenge in his new role as the emissary for the omnipotent Guardians. Felix has to face the creatures who’d held him as a prisoner of war for four years. There’s a new alien race that gets introduced to the galaxy. And there’s intrigue, adventure, and lots of romance. It was just such a fun book.

That said, I absolutely love the interpersonal conflict I’ve written between Luca and Eirian in The Gryphon King’s Consort. It’s the best sort, where neither side is wrong and both sides are right—depending on your perspective. It was really satisfying to be able to bring these two characters with such different philosophies together to form a strong, loving partnership.

  • If you could imagine the best possible place for you to write, where would that be and why?

It would be in a cottage on the lovely and pastoral Prince Edward Island in the Canadian Maritimes. Somewhere with a screened-in porch to protect me from the mosquitoes while still allowing me to enjoy the ocean-fed breeze and admire the red sand beaches. PEI has such a wonderfully sedate pace of life, too. The entire place is just so relaxing.

  • What’s next for you as an author?

I’m attempting to write my first full-length contemporary novel, featuring a couple of head-butting stepbrothers—one who’s a spoiled rich brat used to getting his way and the other who’s a Brazilian-American ex-cop—who are forced to work together to complete the stipulations of their manipulative father’s will. It’s an ambitious project, but I’m hopeful!

I also plan to make my self-pub debut early in 2018 with a sexy contemporary short story. Stay tuned!

The Gryphon King’s Consort

Love takes flight.

The sudden death of the Gryphon King throws the kingdom of Mythos into uncertainty, and Crown Prince Luca rushes both his coronation and an arranged marriage to a man he’s never met. Eirian is young and idealistic, and while they both want what’s best for their people, their philosophies couldn’t be more different. While Luca believes in honoring tradition, Eirian is determined to infuse modern values into their kingdom of magical creatures. When given the choice between loyalty to his husband and his own crusade, Eirian makes a decision that might doom their marriage.

Still, Luca is committed to making their union work, and that means forgiving his brash consort. But when Eirian becomes the target of a deadly conspiracy, Luca must act fast—or forever lose the chance to explore their burgeoning love.

I don’t honestly remember reading anything from Jenn Burke before but if The Gryphon King’s Consort is typical of the tales I can expect from this author, then I’m off to search for other stories to read.  It’s full of gryphons, all sorts of magical beasts, political intrigue, an arranged marriage, and happily, a romance that leads to a love that’s forever after. I mean these beings live a long, long time!

Be still my heart!

A story from Dreamspinner Press’ Dreamspun Beyond line, Burke does a lovely job of laying down a complete alternate universe.  She delivers on the history of the hidden world of magical beasts revealing themselves to humans, the resultant wars and the peace accord that survives to present day.  Also the factions within the Mythos kingdom, the Modernists and the Traditionalists.  It’s a neat believable divide albeit complete with magical beasts (which I adore btw).  Also, a touch I appreciated is the connection a King has with his people.  It’s something I wish more heads of state had these days.  That scene was marvelously touching and pulled the reader further into Luca’s character and his new role as King.

Even the author’s take on gryphons and their ability to shift into different creatures is wonderful and used to great effect here within the storyline, along with all the other hosts of magical beasts/beings we meet here and the rituals or parts of their cultures that Jenn Burke has created for the story.

And all that serves as a foundation and stage for her two main characters, Luca and  Eirian (as well as some memorable secondary characters).  I felt both men/beings were so well done.  The story is told from both perspectives and works extremely well that way.  The reader can see what the emotional cost of an arranged marriage is as far as trust, lack of friendship, personal knowledge  and even missing simple comradeship can be between two people.  Especially when the affairs of state seem determined to keep them apart.

This is, quite simply, a slam bang fantasy romance!  One you can immerse yourself in and be quite startled at how quickly you’ve come to the end.  I loved it and was sorry to see it over.  If you are a lover of fantasy and romance, here’s a story for you!

Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host Julia Talbot here today on her tour for Fants and Catnip.  Welcome, Julia!

✒︎

I’m here to give you a little info about Fangs and Catnip, my very first Dreamspun Beyond from Dreamspinner Press.

Carter is the new manager at the Dead and Breakfast Inn, and he falls for vampire silent partner Fallon, who is sure they don’t need a were-cougar as a manager…

The folks here were kind enough to give me some questions to answer, so here they go!

If you could imagine the best possible place for you to write, where would that be and why?

Oh, in Glenwood Springs, Colorado at the Hot Springs Lodge. I would write, then get a massage, then go to the hot springs pool. Fallon, the vampire character in Fangs and Catnip is a writer, and he’s in a B&B in Colorado near where my spot is.

With so much going on in the world today, do you write to explain?  To get away?  To move past?  To wide our knowledge?  Why do you write?

I write because there has to be good, and fiction makes me happy. Paranormal makes me smile. Sex makes me hot. It’s escapism for sure. Romance is love, and with love I can believe the world will right itself.

What’s next for you as a writer?

I’m working on another paranormal for the Dreamspun Beyond line for Dreamspinner. None of them are shifters! Gasp.

What traits do you find the most interesting in someone? Do you write them into your characters?

Humor. I love someone who can laugh with me, or laugh at themselves. Wicked smart people fascinate me. Half of my best friends over the years have been Mensa members. I love crafty and arty people. Making things makes me bounce, and I love folks who want to do it. I try hard to write them into my books in some way, like the humor in Fangs and Catnip.

Have you ever put a story away, thinking it just didn’t work?  Then years/months/whatever later inspiration struck and you loved it?  Is there a title we would recognize if that happened?

OMG all the time. I’m he queen of starting projects I never finish, or that I pick up later because it’s too good or too long to waste. My next story to come out with Changeling Press (hopefully this month) is one of those stories that languished for a year, but I picked it up and dusted it off.

Thanks so much for having me, y’all!

A Dead and Breakfast Novel

A romance worth fighting for—tooth and claw.

Solitary vampire Fallon Underwood gets all the social interaction he needs being the silent partner at the Dead and Breakfast B and B high in the Colorado mountains. Change is hard for Fallon, so when his business partner, Tanner, suggests hiring a new manager for the inn, he’s adamant that they don’t need help, especially not in the form of bouncy werecat Carter Hughes.

Carter is a happy-go-lucky kitty, and he loves the hospitality industry, so the D and B ought to be a great place for him. He falls for Fallon as soon as he picks up one of Fallon’s novels, and begins to woo the vamp with gifts. When Fallon finally succumbs to Carter’s feline charms, the results are unexpected, to say the least. Their mating will have irreversible consequences—for their bodies and their hearts.

This was a pretty cute story about a cross species mating and I really liked it.  Carter is just starting his first job since finished college, he can’t help but be drawn to Fallon.  Fallon has spent so much time alone he has trouble understanding why he feels like he needs to be around Carter so much.
Carter is so bouncy and I think it is adorable.  Fallon likes to make everyone think he is the typical broody vampire but there are a few he has allowed close enough to let them see the real him.
This story is told from both of the characters’ point of view and it make it easier to understand their thoughts and feelings.  It seemed odd that neither of them really knew anything about mating and how to deal with the problems it caused.  I could feel how heartbroken Carter felt when Fallon pushed him away even though he thought he was doing what was best.  These characters seemed ruled by their other half’s baser instincts than many I usually read about, but it worked well.  The only thing I had trouble keeping up with was the timeline, it all seemed to happen really fast but it would be talked about as having taken time.
Cover art by Aaron Anderson is great and I love the picture.
