A Jeri Review: Jersey Heat by DC Williams

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

Jersey HeatI have to admit that I requested to read and review this book because it was set in NJ. And I am born and bred Jersey girl. So while it didn’t have a lot to do with Jersey- unnamed city they live in, unnamed beach town they visit (although I could guess), it was still a decent steamy read. I just have to put my Jersey bias aside.

Austin and Carter are roommates in a one bedroom apartment with very little air conditioning in the middle of a heatwave. In an effort to keep cool, they decide to leave super early to hit the beach. There is a lot of flirting and rubbing, but even though Austin is gay and out, Carter is presumably straight, and nursing a cracked- not slight broken- heart after his girlfriend dumped him.

*Cue porn music*  This was definitely not a thinker type book, but definitely more a porn screenplay in book form. There was a bit of story there, squeezed in so it isn’t all sex. It’s a fun, hot short story with zero angst. Which is sometimes exactly what you need.

The cover alludes to the heat, the coupling and the beach. What more could you want?

A Jeri Review: The Wicked West Collection (Vol 1) by Shannon West

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

The Wicked West CollectionHot guy on the cover? Sure! Anything to draw your eye, but it was rather generic. Four short stories by one author. And when I say short- I mean short. They all touched on a different “theme” if you will, and while they were ok, the fluff factor is high.

Getting Plugged

This was by far the most out there of the stories. Charlie, while experimenting, gets himself in a predicament and has to call out sick to work. His boss, Trevor, rushes to his aid. Apparently, they had never really spoken before but Trevor  runs to his house to help him out. What could, and should, be a seriously embarrassing situation turns into Trevor alluding to the fact that he is a dom and Charlie is a sub just waiting to happen. Like I said, it was pretty far out there and besides the self love, there was no sex in this short.

Getting Played

I think this was the most promising of the four stories. Twinky office guy at a police station has to take self defense classes ordered by his boss. The super hot detective Zach has been eyeing just happens to be the teacher. And when Zach mouths off, Cole decides to teach him a lesson.

What follows are a series of pretty hot role playing scenarios between the two. The most entertaining and hottest of the 4 stories by far.

Getting Picked

The trope we all tend to fall for- friends to lovers. In this story we have another Cole, a vet returning from war damaged but not broken. His best friend, the seemingly straight Ben, rushes to see him in the hospital.

After being released from the hospital, Cole and Ben kind of dance around their attraction to each other. Cole is out and proud and has loved Ben for as long as he could remember. But every time something happens between them, Ben freaks out. So Cole gives him an ultimatum.

This was the storiest (yes, I made that word up) of the stories. While it is a tried and true trope, I liked that the out gay guy was the one who served in the military, leaving the “straight” best friend home. I actually really liked the story of how they became friends in kindergarten. I would love for this one to be expanded on as a full novel.

Getting Pierced

This one plays more on the Dom/sub. Ross loses a bet and has to get pierced. But not his ears. And he said not to his belly button and nipples. So that leaves…..

And then he runs into his boss at the bar. His hot boss. We get a bit of back story on Ross and Sloane, which was nice and helped the rest of the story flow. Sloane takes control of the situation, and Ross, by basically claiming him there and then.

There is quite an exploration of the beginnings of a Dom/sub relationship here that held a lot of promise. This story also could go quite a bit further.

A Jeri Review: Fish Out of Water by Amy Lane

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Fish Out of WaterAs a fan of Amy Lane, I was excited to read this book. I’ve enjoyed her more “fluffy” work as well as her more angsty work. This was neither. It was hard to even classify it as a romance for me. It’s a murder mystery with police corruption and some sex thrown in.

Jackson is a former cop turned PI with a chip on his shoulder the size of Montana. He always wanted to be a cop to right the wrongs in the world. Or at least in his neighborhood. But after getting burned and nearly killed, he walks around like the world owes him. For a guy who wanted to help, I don’t see him helping anyone but himself and his brother-like best friend.

Ellery is an attorney at a big shot firm where Jackson is a PI. Apparently he has always crushed on Jackson, but was put off by his whoring ways. They are thrown together to help Jackson’s friend Kaden clear his name.

Jackson and Ellery are so antagonistic toward each other from the start. And yet, they pretty much fall into bed together. Even though Jackson swore he wouldn’t until Kaden was safe. That lasted for about 10 pages. For a guy on a moral high horse, he doesn’t really stick to his own.

I didn’t feel any chemistry between the two. In fact, I felt a lot more chemistry between Jackson and  his best friend’s sister at the beginning of the story. It just felt like both guys wanted to get their rocks off. There was no feeling.

So while this certainly won’t put me off of Ms. Lane’s work, this book really didn’t do it for me. Even the title didn’t work. There was no tie in whatsoever. So a cover with a gold fish and handcuffs wouldn’t draw me to this book and even if it did, it doesn’t hint at the grittiness of the story.

A Jeri Review: The First Morning After by Marie Lark

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

The First Morning AfterDanny got out of his small town as soon as he could. He headed straight for college and never looked-or went- back. Until his best friend is getting married and he has to.

Mitchel was the star baseball player who, while he did not actively bully Danny in school, he sure did nothing to stop it.

Danny has had a crush on Mitchel since forever. And Mitchel has been hiding a very important part of himself. Thrown together at the wedding, Danny takes it upon himself to talk to Mitchel. And when no one is looking, Mitchel hits on Danny.

This entire book was over the course of 2 days. The wedding day and the day after. And although a book with such a short time frame could feel overly packed with superfluous information to get the word count up, I never felt this way. In fact, it definitely kept me turning the pages. Danny has come into his own, unafraid to let the world know he is gay. But Mitchel is the opposite. The glory days of high school are over, he is single and in line to take over his father’s car business, which he hates, and travels to other towns to hook up with men in bathrooms.

You could easily not like either of these characters for different reasons. But I DID like them. Even when they did stupid things. Because people do stupid things. It is what makes us human. Perhaps Danny was a bit too forgiving. Or Mitchel was a bit too closeted and clueless. But together, they really were adorable.

My biggest complaint would be that it was too short. I wanted more. I wanted to see how Mitchel would deal with his sexuality and his job he hated. I wanted to see Danny taking Mitchel out in Philadelphia where no one knew him. So we get a happily for now, but I wanted a happily ever after.

A Jeri Release Day Review: The Boy Next Door by Kate McMurray

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

The Boy Next Door 2Lowell hasn’t been back to his home town in 20 years. But after his abusive father dies, he feels the need to be there to care for his mother. So he goes from being an out and proud single gay man in Manhattan to the “only” gay man in a fairly conservative town. And then he finds out that he bought the house next door to his former childhood friend and crush.

Jase is in his childhood home raising his daughter after a pretty bitter divorce. A divorce brought on by the fact that he couldn’t deny the fact that he was gay any longer. But his ex-wife doesn’t want their daughter exposed to any of the men that could be in Jase’s life. So he sticks to one offs when he does to gay bars in the city. But then Lowell moved in next door.

I was a bit disbelieving that Lowell didn’t recognize that the house he bought was next door to his former childhood friend’s house. But, ok.  Although awkward at first, they quickly fell back into the friendship they had as kids. When Jase could no longer deny his attraction, things heated up. Quickly. But he was staying firmly in the closet.

One of the things I really liked about this book is the everyday adult issues that came up.  Kids, ex wives, hating your job, sick parents, etc. So often books just kind of gloss over real life things. I want to yell “what about your job?” “do you grocery shop?” Silly. But true. The author dealt with these things without them being silly filler.

Lowell and Jase were really hot AND sweet together and seeing Lowell with Jase’s daughter was heart melting. Some of the things that keep my rating at 3 stars:  Lowell basically is like a puppy waiting for Jase. They fight, break up, Lowell takes him right back. I also think it is pretty unrealistic that Jase was in the closet with even his closest friends. And while this could have been a HEA, we really just get a happily for now…

A Jeri Review: Son of Money By Brandon Witt

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

Son of MoneyAt times I really liked this book. But at other times I really didn’t. So this is a mixed review for me, because I will try to highlight both as I am a fan of Mr. Witt’s books but this one was a disappointment.

Randall disinherited himself from the family fortune so that they couldn’t/wouldn’t run his life any longer. Guess what? He works to pay the bills and they still control his life.

Noah was just as bipolar as Randall. Except he spent his life as the son of missionaries and part of his adult life as one. Until his father died and he left it all behind. He hints that he no longer believes, but it is never explored at all.

There is a lot that is never explored.

Randall and Noah knew each other as teens and had a quick dalliance with each other before Noah was gone again on a missionary trip with his family. Fate brings them back together and while Noah pretty much had been waiting for that to happen, Randall is thrown for a loop. Randall’s feelings toward it rang more true. Noah was just completely accepting of the fact that all of a sudden there is Randall again. So of course they should get back together and live happily ever after. Really? People grow and change a lot in 20 years.

While I really enjoyed the relationship that Randall had with his niece, that is the strong hold his family had on him. Tow the line or you don’t see her anymore. I just felt it was ridiculous. Are parents really that controlling when you are an adult? Maybe, but to me that just shows how weak you are. I am speaking of not only Randall, but his brother and his sister in law who happens to be his best friend.

Anyway, back to the “romance”. I didn’t feel that there was any. It was kind of just accepted that they would be back together, the end. I wanted Noah to woo Randall. To be romantic. To show why they should be together, not just accept it as fact. I did like how Noah stood up to Randall’s parents, though. See why I am so wishy washy with this review? Loved this, hated that.

Previous books by Brandon Witt really hit me and left me thinking what a great book I just read.  I almost couldn’t wait to write the reviews because I wanted everyone to read the books. This one….meh.

A Jeri Review: Smoke and Mirrors (THIRDS book 7) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Smoke and MirrorsYou have read the THIRDS series, right? If you haven’t- READ IT! Start at the beginning. Trust me.
Smoke and Mirrors is book seven in the excellent series, THIRDS. This book picks up with the serious cliffhanger ending from Catch a Tiger by the Tail, book 6. As fans of the series know, we were left wndering what happened to Dex when Sloane woke up to find him gone. And boy do we find out.
While many of the books deal with various relationships- Dex and Sloane, Ash and Cael, Calving and Hobbs- there is always an intriguing story behind it all. Complex and interesting, the continuing story sucks you in and keeps you coming back for more. To say you get invested in these characters is an understatement.
In this installment, there are no new relationships being formed. Instead, this book focuses all on the story. What really happened to Dex’s parents. Who know what. How intricate the web is. Who can you trust and not trust? Watching the team come together to save and help one of their own shows how tight they all are, We continue to see the romantic involvements between the various couples, and we hope beyond hope for other couples to form.
I have to say that the one big twist was pretty apparent even before it was revealed. Even with that knowledge, it was no less gasp worthy.
I have to mention that there was one brief part in the book that was so relevant to what is happening in the news, I wondered briefly if Ms.Cochet was psychic.
These books make you think, make you swoon, make you literally laugh out loud and make you cry. Although I love that it is a “gay romance”  I would hazard a guess that if it were a mainstream romance it would be a chart buster and have producers fighting for the movie rights.
The tagline of “Everything changes” whetted our appetites and this book completely satisfied.
Cover art by L.C. Chase is perfect for the book and series.

A Jeri Review: Wolf, en Garde (Wolf #2) by A.F. Henley

Rating: 3 Stars out of 5

Wolf en Garde Front CoverThree years ago Lyle made a mistake that cost him his freedom, and almost his life. Now, sick to death of watching his father love the man that Lyle wanted, Lyle accepts an offer to leave Wolf, WY behind and see what life in Washington, D.C. can do for him instead.

When Lyle comes across a seductive, attractive stranger with a fascinating yet terrifying view of humanity, he’s more than intrigued. It doesn’t take Lyle long to realize that Arius isn’t just playing games, though, and when Lyle runs across a secret in Arius’ lair he has no choice but to flee, even knowing his actions will enrage Arius.

On the run, with only a psychic’s second sight and his own instinct to help him, Lyle has nowhere to go but home. The only question is, will they have him when he shows up.This book is a follow up to Wolf, WY. In that book father and son shifters were vying for the same man- although that man was only interested in one of them. Fast forward a bit to this book.

Lyle and family head to Washington, DC to visit his dad’s boyfriend’s family. Lyle has never been out of Wyoming and although he is completely uninterested in the “family” part of the family trip- he is beyond excited to see a new place. Even though his father forbade him from shifting while there. But Lyle was never really one to listen. After shifting and sneaking out his first night, Lyle comes across an old vampire who is determined to woo him. Young, impressionable, never out of WY Lyle falls right into his spell. But the vampire has some dark secrets.

So when I started reading the story I assumed that Lyle and the vampire, Arius, were the couple to fall in love against all odds, yada yada. I was wrong. In fact, we don’t meet the man Lyle is going to fall for until about two thirds into the book.

Honestly, this book kind of felt like a super fleshed out outline that was basically just setting us up for book three. Tons of things were left up in the air, too many questions left unanswered. And the instalove between Lyle and BOTH guys (ok, instalust?) was just a bit much.

Why did Arius taunt Lyle about Randy? How was Randy’s dad so clueless about Randy’s mom? Why was Randy’s mom so incredibly cold toward her son?

Too many questions which beg for a book three, but I really don’t know if I will invest my time in book three.

The dark cover with only bright green eyes and a full moon visible is catching, yet not unique for a wolf shifter book.

A Jeri Review: Out in the Field by Kate McMurray

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

out-in-the-fieldIt’s no secret that I am a big, big fan of baseball books. Kate McMurray’s previous series “The Rainbow League” was awesome. And this book is right on par. Apparently released in 2012, this is a new edition.

Matt Blanco is a baseball star nearing the end of his career. He is getting old, his batting average isn’t great and he has been hiding that he was gay his entire career.

Iggy Rodriguez is the new rookie who is psyched to not only play on his favorite team, but alongside his favorite player.

The ever popular “chance encounter” in the locker room brings them close- especially when they realize the other is also gay. They begin a secret and hot romance- figuring they have the best of both worlds. Someone else to keep their secret with and someone to have regular sex with.

But real life- namely their jobs in baseball- comes knocking.

One of the many things I really appreciate about Kate McMurray is her knowledge of baseball and the intricacies surrounding it. It isn’t just playing 162 games a year. It is traveling and practices and agents and endorsements and injuries and press. So while another author could write a neat and tidy romance with two players who enjoy each other, this book brings in the nitty gritty. Seeing how they deal with all of the outside influences and their careers and what they are willing- or not willing- to sacrifice.

This was a great story- about romance, sex, the beginning of one career and the end of another. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this book- but if you are a baseball fan you will love it.

Cover art by Aaron Anderson is a perfect baseball cover.

A Jeri Review: Debt by KC Wells

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

da084-debtfs2b252812529Interesting and slightly different premise to this novel by KC Wells. One man has had his heart broken when his long time boyfriend left. One man is trying to pay off the debt of his brother- by working in what is basically a brothel.

Nikko chose, in a way, to work in the brothel to pay off the debt to his brother’s employer- a known drug dealer. He thought he would be working in the kitchen or serving drinks. But really he is behind glass with other prostitutes waiting to get chosen by a john.

Mitch is talked into going to a club with a friend from work. To get himself out there and try to get over his heart break. After a drink in the innocuous bar downstairs, his friend leads him to the secret upstairs. A sex club that offers prostitutes for a price. Mitch has no interest in sex for pay, until he sees Nikko reading in the corner trying to be invisible.

Mitch falls for Nikko and Nikko for him. But…..

Like I said, this was an interesting premise which I really liked. And while Mitch was a character I’ve seen again and again, I really liked Nikko. His loyalty to his brother and his acceptance of the fate he chose was respectable.  Mitch and Nikko together was very hot at times and very sweet and romantic at others. Even with all of the drama that surrounds the situation, I would still call it fairly low angst.

What I didn’t like was that Mitch kind of felt like the knight in shining armor. Swooping in the save the day. Nikko seems to have hero worship towards him and I worried that their love for each other wasn’t quite real because it grew out of such extraordinary circumstances.

A good read, generally likable characters and a tidy (too tidy?) ending that actually leaves it open for another book, either with them as the main characters or someone else taking the spotlight.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is gorgeous.
