A Mika Review: The Book of Ethan by Russell J. Sanders

Rating: 4 star out of 5 stars

The Book of Ethan coverEthan Harker is the son of The Prophet, the stern, demanding leader of a small Southwestern polygamous community. Ethan has been groomed to one day take his place as the leader of this isolated cult.

But things happen that compel Ethan to flee his stifling community and find his way in the world beyond it. Totally out of his depth, he is sheltered by a remarkable group of people from a loving and accepting church. From them, he learns what family truly means and begins to construct a life free from the restrictions he’s grown up with. Little by little he dismisses the assumptions he was taught about the “evil” people in the outside world.

Amid all this, Ethan realizes something about himself when he meets rapper Kyan, a boy his age. Although he’s been brought up to fear and hate members of Kyan’s race, he can’t help falling in love with Kyan. Fueled by a new understanding and new friends, Ethan gains the strength and courage to conquer the confusing world he has been thrust into.

The book was not on my radar until my “Ethan” brought it to me. I had never read anything by this author so I didn’t know what to expect. I’m very curious about reading books pertaining religion tropes outside of Christianity. For me it’s nice to see how other people’s faith details how they will live their lives.

I think the author did a good job on Ethan’s questions involving the world. I don’t know any person that doesn’t have question about how the world works. I know from experience growing up in a Baptist church we were expected of certain things, and I had all these question about general people. It shows in the author’s writing his familiarity with curious. I’m not familiar with the Mormon religion, and I don’t know if what I’ve read is correct, but if it’s like this then someone needs to pray for the children involved.

I loved Ethan, I didn’t see him standing up for himself. I did not see him standing up for other people or questioning folks.

I think the author did a very good job on Kyan. I seldom see African American YA male characters, but to see one who is not closeted, not scared to admit him being gay is amazing. What else is amazing is having a supportive mother like Kyan does. It brought tears to my eyes because she didn’t stop loving him because of that, she didn’t want him to rap. It seems silly seeing as this is present day, but her reasons are validated. I think this books shows courage, strength, and seeing good in people.

If I had to find fault in the story it was my displeasure of the author having Kyan speak in constant slang or Ebonics. I will say, it turned me off in the beginning alot. I didn’t like it, still don’t like it, but it’s a part in the book Ethan mentions that he loves how Ky could turn off his street self, and turn on the son of a professor. I get it’s just a book, but I think we could have done without it.

I really enjoyed the diversity in this book. It had such a supporting cast, and I appreciated everyone in this book. I do love that it was such a positive note instead of the negative things like runaways, prostitution, or drugs something that could have easily happened to Ethan. It had sad moments but it’s life.  I will probably be on the look out for more from this author.

Cover art by Anne Caine. I liked this cover a lot, it showed the boys in the most simplistic view. I liked that we didn’t get to see a full picture of Ethan seeing as in the book he talked about vanity being a sin, and trying to not gauge his looks in the mirror often. I think they did a very good job on the cover.

A Mika Review:Scarred Souls (Scarred Souls #1) by T.T. Kove

Rating: 3.25 stars out of 5:

Scarred Souls coverOn a cold, wet afternoon Damian stumbled across a young man huddled beneath a tree crying his eyes out. He’s got more than enough problems of his own, but is compelled to give the bloke a place to crash for at least the night.

Josh is used to being alone, and most days it’s easier than trying to deal with people who can’t, or won’t, understand him. When Damian takes him in for the night, Josh assumes it’s gong to be one more go round of sex and get out in the morning.

Neither of them expects the friendship that develops, and they’re far from prepared when friendship starts to turn into more.

I really like the author’s writing style and that includes her writing in Scarred Souls.  This is my second book by T. T. Kove, and as usual the writing flows nicely. Reading this, I felt like I stepped into the middle of the story based on Damian’s and Josh reaction towards each other. They meet and it’s not a care in the world about getting to know each other. I really liked Damian as a character, I mean he’s 18 years old, but he seems so mature for his age. Also, Damian has gone through a traumatic experience as well. When it comes to his history, I think the author fell short on providing some background history. I would have liked to have seen the way his friendship with Silver progressed from beginning to end. He’s functioning and I think he’s allowed to be angry one day out of the year because of what happened to him. I give him tremendous credit for being mentally strong enough to be in a relationship with Josh.

Josh had so many problems. I felt bad for him. Someone who was supposed to love and care for him took advantage of him and it became this permanent stain on his heart . Sometimes I do feel like Josh used his borderline personality disorder to take advantage of Damian. He didn’t quite respect Damian’s reasoning on some sort. I do feel like all the times that he did harm himself was selfish, as well as givingsomeone else that burden of looking after you. I get it’s he’s mentally unstable. I wish his mother would have pushed the issue on him getting help more efficiently. I do like the side characters that were in the story. I think I’ll continue on the series.

Cover Art by: Aisha Akeju. I think the guy on the cover represents Damian, I’m not really sure since the main guys physical descriptions were hardly talked about. Either way it’s a nice cover since characters go through some traumatic experiences.

A Mika Review: More than Anything by T.T. Kove

Rating: 4.5 star out of 5 stars

More Than Anything coverArriving home after work one evening, Jørgen sees a young man who looks adrift and out of place—and who promptly has a seizure on the sidewalk. Jørgen takes care of him until the seizure passes and then, not knowing who to contact, takes care of him for the night. After giving the kid, Geir, a ride home the next morning, he expects that to be the end of it.

He doesn’t expect Geir to be a student at the vocational school where Jørgen works as an electrician. He definitely does not expect to be drawn to Geir time and again, to want things that will never be possible for two people with more obstacles between them than can ever be overcome.

This was a first for me by this author. I truly enjoyed this book. I was taken aback by some things, but I have to remember that there are rules outside North America. LOL.

I didn’t know how I would feel about a 16 yr old being in a relationship with a 22 yr old, but T.T. Kove surely wrote it beautifully.

Geir was so amazing; all he wanted was a mate. I found myself tearing up whenever he would talking about being lonely, hell they didn’t tease him for being gay, no, these insensitive ass children teased him for having Epilepsy something he has no freaking control over. I was so pissed off at every push, hit, taunting. I know a book has affected me when I want to step inside Geir’s school and deal with the bullies instead of him. I was mad as hell his father left his 3 weeks out the month for work. I understand him having to have a job, but not noticing anything about your only child until he got hit in the face was crazy.

I don’t have children yet, and I am the first to not judge a parent but really liked he was super lonely, and the first person to show him an ounce of kindness outside of family was the tragic boy himself Jorgen. I know he isn’t a boy, but when he was, no one protected him at all. Reading that letter he wrote to Geir literally broke me in to pieces.

Both of these guys stepped outside themselves and decided to trust each other.

I like Daniel & Thomas. I wish we had more fathers, uncles, and role models like this in the world.

I had a couple of issues but they were my personal beliefs so I couldn’t factor those into my rating. Why not 5 stars? Well I really wanted to know more about Kay, since he was brought up more times. I also would have liked an epilogue. What is happening since Geir moved it? At the end of the day I truly loved this book, I devoured it and surely I want more. Can’t wait for book 2.

Cover Art by T.T. Kove. I actually liked the cover a lot. I liked that it showed Geir right in his moment; it showed him going forward in his life.

A Mika Review: This Other Country (More Heat Than the Sun #4) by John Wiltshire

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This Other CountryNikolas is the sanest, straightest, person he knows, so can anyone tell him, why he’s on a gay therapy course?

Nikolas Mikkelsen could make a very long list of unpleasant things he’s endured in his life. Then order it from ‘nearly killed me’ to ‘extremely horrific and don’t want to do again’. And what did it say about his forty-five years that being hit by a tsunami would be a considerable way down this list? But nothing, not torture, imprisonment, nor starvation has prepared him for what he now has to endure for Ben Rider’s sake-attendance on a residential, gay therapy course. At least he has a new contender for the top spot on his ‘my awful life’ list.

This Other Country starts off right where The Bridge of Silver Wings ends. Right from the start, I was worried. I mean I wasn’t use to this side of either guys. My heart was beating fast because of all the ideas that were running through my mind based on what I was reading. After a while, I was relieved. No worries from me now on, because I know John Wiltshire would never break my heart like that. I thoroughly enjoyed the circumstances pertaining to Nikolas and Ben ending up in couple’s therapy. Never worry, folks, this is the same vulnerable, difficult, and loving Nik and Ben we are used to. This installment lacked the natural disasters, and attempted assassinations but it never digressed from it’s usual level of emotions and dedicated plot.

I found myself at times sitting back and thinking of all the things that Nikolas has done over the last 8 years and I wouldn’t change a thing. This road that they have found themselves on is their destiny and journey. No matter how things turned out for the better or worst this Ben and Nikolas are the only ones that matter. This book we got a lot of “I’m not gay” responses. I didn’t know how I felt like that, and because I’m not a gay man I can’t say what I should feel like. I can say I liked how each one’s reasoning. Maybe they aren’t gay but for each other. Either way I loved that instead of the action we had to actually deal with “real life” things like how they are perceived. It was a scary reaction for both but I was confident enough that they would come out winning on some accounts.

(Spoiler Links)

I love guiltless Nikolas but damn I wanted cut throat Nikolas out in an instance involving Kate, I can’t talk about the deed but it shows the amount of growth he had by not putting her head on a spike. I was so angry and blood thirsty because of her betrayal that I expected actions to be taken. What do we know; Nikolas has turned over a new leaf.

Wiltshire continues to impress me with his growth of Ben. Just when we think Ben has lost his marbles literally he does the unexpected. I was smiling through tears at that point because it took a lot for him to do that. This goes to show that Ben is still that pure angel in my mind. While this one is somber than the last 3 it might have been the most impactful to me. The message of accepting one’s voice is bright and powerful in itself. I really do enjoy reading these books, and can’t wait to see what John Wiltshire has in store for us next.

Cover Art by Deanna Jamroz. Definitely goes hand in hand with the battling of others and yourself. I truly do like these covers.

A Mika Review: Mauled (Guards of Folsom #4.5, Beyond Duty #2) by S.J.D. Peterson

Rating: 3.75 rounded up to 4 stars out of 5

Mauled coverGunther Duchene aka “Gunny” and Macalister Jones aka “Mac” have overcome the obstacles of coming out and retiring from serving more than twenty years as Marines. Their exit ceremony is behind them, their wedding vows are made, and now it’s time for the honeymoon. What better way to kick off their marriage than enjoying the retirement gift Mac gave Gunny? With the leather pants and collar packed, it’s off to New York City and the Guards of Folsom club to celebrate—BDSM style.

I was super thrilled to read anything more of Mac & Gunny. I loved these two so much. I love reading about older guys with established relationships. While I did love reading about these two, and I know the premise of this novella I wish I could gotten more out of these two. I loved this relationship in this book. Mac & Gunny were super in love. It is simple to see how these guys feel about each other, that they and their relationship is the more essential factor than playing in the other roles. It just feel right and was very believable. I really enjoyed this book. I would have loved for more Mac & Gunny relationships.

Cover Art by Paul Richmond. I loved this cover it definitely showed Gunny in a light that he likes. It beautifully done.

A Mika Review: The Lion and the Crow by Eli Easton

Rating: 4 star out of 5 stars

The Lion and the Crow coverIn medieval England, duty is everything, personal honor is more valued than life itself, and homosexuality is not tolerated by the church or society.

Sir Christian Brandon was raised in a household where he was hated for his unusual beauty and for his parentage. Being smaller than his six brutish half-brothers, he learned to survive by using his wits and his gift for strategy, earning him the nickname the Crow.

Sir William Corbett, a large and fierce warrior known as the Lion, has pushed his unnatural desires down all his life. He’s determined to live up to his own ideal of a gallant knight. When he takes up a quest to rescue his sister from her abusive lord of a husband, he’s forced to enlist the help of Sir Christian. It’s a partnership that will test every strand of his moral fiber, and, eventually, his understanding of the meaning of duty, honor, and love.

I really enjoyed this book a lot. I love a good historic fiction book. I laughed, cried, and was over excited by the adventures of Sir William & Sir Christian. This was a short novella, which I wish could have turned into a full length novel. Both guys were extremely resilient with the situation that this rescue turned into. Christian had to have strong body armor to grow up in a family like his. He was the 7th son and you can say the black sheep of the family. Through in some homosexuality in this time frame and all he needed was instant death. Goodness, no one treated him with respect or care until William showed up in the picture. William… I felt bad for him at first, because he had no clue what he was getting into by allowing Christian to accompany him. I found myself swooning at times of Christian trying to find way of appeasing William, and vice versa of William looking out for Christian as well as giving praise where praise was due. I really enjoyed it. That ending though, I cried so much. I mean I understand it but damn it was such a beautiful bow wrapped up for people.

Cover Artist by Maria Fanning. This cover totally goes hand in hand with the book. Its knights, jostles, horses, adventures, and hosing material. The cover model was a gorgeous version of William loved it.

A Mika Review: Captive To His Wonder by Remmy Duchene

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Captive to His Wonder coverShipped off to boarding school at a young age, Bradley Ellesbury Jr. lacked for nothing, except the love and approval of his father. Now with his father’s recent passing, Bradley feels the sting of disapproval one last time with the reading of the will.

Forced to leave behind his glamorous Parisian lifestyle, Bradley returns to the small town of Foster Creek to do precisely what his father forbade—sell the ranch. Meeting the infuriating cowboy his father hired to run the place only makes him more determined to go against his father’s wishes.

Too old to be playing mind games with twenty-something know-it-alls; Jace Cornielle stays only because he promised the old man. Somewhere between picking fights and making snarky comments, Jace and Bradley move from annoyance to attraction. Then Bradley learns losing the cowboy means he loses everything.

This was my first Remmy Duchene novel and I liked it a lot. I might be slightly biased because a character is name Jace just like my hubby, but oh well. I really liked this Jace though, with his kind heart, and temperament he was fine cowboy! Bradley on the other hand was a mess. He was such a QUEEN with an attitude from the beginning until the end. Yes, might have redeemed himself, but sometimes how he acted was totally unnecessary. I would have liked to known some more history on Bradley’s parents and their involvements. Most likely I could have seen the reasoning behind his ways. I mean, he just wasn’t spoiled, he was rude and mean for no reason. Sometimes he could be down right heartless, and in a split second be the sweetest thing walking.

I knew right off the back that Jace was going to win me over. He had the “grown man” attitude about himself. He was really awesome, even with the quick temper and nonchalant attitude about some folks. I do think it went from hatred to insta-love quickly especially the amount of blow ups the two had. I liked the flow of the story. You could see the chemistry between the two immediately. I didn’t like Bradley expecting to get everything his way. He needed to grow up quick. Honestly by the end of the book I don’t know if he grew up enough. Maybe he will realize being selfish isn’t going to help with Jace at all. I also loved the interracial relationship. I’d recommend this to cowboy lovers, enemies to lovers as well as people from opposite sides of life coming together to fall in love!

L.C. Chase created this cover. I really liked this cover, both guys were gorgeous, and you could see this happening while reading the story.

A Mika Review: In Too Deep by Kate Sherwood

Rating: 4 stars out of 5:

In Too Deep coverAt first glance, Cade and Aiden hardly seem like a match made in heaven. Their worlds couldn’t be further apart. Cade is quiet, serious, and determined to succeed; Aiden’s a party-loving frat boy. Cade comes from a rough home and worked hard to get the scholarships that make it possible for him to attend college; Aiden’s had it all thrown in his lap by supportive, kind, and wealthy parents. Cade wants nothing to do with Aiden, but from the moment they meet, Aiden is determined to find a way to bring their different worlds together.

Aiden manages to persuade Cade he’s a decent guy, and a tentative friendship becomes much more. But a trip to Aiden’s family cottage puts Cade in the path of a ghost from his past, and a dark secret he never expected to face again. Cade did what he had to do to escape his dead-end life, but now he sees he didn’t leave it as far behind him as he thought.

First off, it needs a really good proofreading. That’s first, besides the grammar issue this is one of the best Kate Sherwood books IMO. I truly loved these two. It was definitely angst filled all throughout the story. Both boys were truly lovable. I think I heart Aiden, because he was so persistent in what he wanted. He didn’t take no for an answer, and yes it was times that he should have walked away and forgot about Cade, but I understand wanting to love that 1 person who inspires you to be a better person. Aiden was very brazen to keep going after someone who seemed so stand offish from the beginning. I liked Cade, I hate what he had to go through as a child and young man, but I applaud him for never giving up. His adolescence was super hard, but it didn’t deter him from wanting to be a better human being.

Once again we see people who have children, but can’t stay safe enough to raise them. I know a ton of people probably would have DNF the book because of the attraction seemed so one-sided, but the introvert that Cade was needed someone to fight for him. Cade needed someone to care enough to break him out of his comfort zones, and I loved that about Aiden. Aiden is super nice, comforting, he’s sweetheart. I didn’t see a mean bone in his body, I liked that he stood up for Cade in front of his mom. I even adored him for not apologizing for being fortunate in his life to never have to want.

I knew reading this there was something that Cade was hiding about himself, and the big reveal was realistic, things like this happen in every day life. I liked how the author wrote the scenes after everything came to play out. I do wish we had some epilogue to see how they are a year later. I really enjoyed reading this book. I recommend this book to all angst readers, and people who like HFN or HEA, people are fight for their great true loves!

Cover Artist Christy Caughie created this cover, I don’t quite know if I pictured Aiden as a blond even though Cade referred to him as the”golden boy”. I do think boy guys were represented well, and it fits with the story.

A Mika Review: All That Heaven Will Allow by D.W. Marchwell

Rating: 4.25 stars out of 5:

All that Heaven Will Allow coverJimmy Campbell has owned his own bar for the past twenty years. While his past is troubled, his present and future make life worth living. He has good friends, more than enough money, and he volunteers—along with his Yorkie, Bozo, and his Maine coon cat, Miss Alicia—at the local hospital every Friday. He couldn’t ask for more. That is, until he meets Derek “Dizzy” Roberts.

Derek is a musician who tours the country with his band. He’s an ex-cop, was married once, and has the bitter ex-wife and two spoiled children to prove it. He’s finally living his dream, and that includes bedding all the groupies who think he’s every bit as good as his music. He doesn’t worry much about the future, until he meets Jimmy.

The two men begin a long-distance romance, sneaking weekends here and there, until a tragedy forces them to realize they might lose the only thing they both want–a future together. Now, they’re asking for everything heaven will allow.

I loved everything about these two. I liked that it was 2 guys over 40 years old. Yes both had bad previous relationship but they came into this one only with each other in mind. It was definitely instant love, but at their respected ages I’m pretty sure they knew what was what. This was my first read by this author and I’m glad I really enjoyed it. It felt really slow paced in the beginning,   more character driven than the romance and I was okay with that.

Both mc’s were equally great in their own ways, but Jimmy definitely stole the show for me. I’m not an animal person by far but what Jimmy was able to do with his heart and for other people is amazing. He was super patient, honest, loyal, and all about second chances. He was super caring, and he just came off as the perfect guy. I mean I don’t think he said one negative thing the entire book, and he definitely pulled at my heart strings for sure. Sure he had his issues, damages and reasons for wanting to start something with Derek but I’m super happy he gave into it, because it made him a happier man.

When Derek is first introduced it’s him offering himself as a player name Dizzy. LMAO, I thought he was super charming, but of course all that charming was just a facade for the man underneath. Their first interaction with each other had me rooting for Jimmy and snorting at Dizzy because he just got served big time.

All in all, they made their romance work for them. Dizzy finally got the family he wanted, James finally had someone who love and appreciated him. A couple things bothered me, Derek’s previous relationship and children story line didn’t get wrapped. I felt like it was just left off, and I would have liked to seen some type of mending of the sorts. It was a lot of misspellings in the book; I did think they needed a better proofreader. I didn’t tear up surprisingly. I would recommend this book to CR readers, just an easy read between two older guys. I like reading about older guys. I find that they tend to communicate a lot better, and that’s mostly what I’m looking for.

The cover artist Bree Archer created this cover, and I liked the picture because it was full circle for the two guys. I did feel like the one portraying James wasn’t since in the book he was a full blond, other than that I really liked it.

A Mika Review: Desires’ Guardian (Desires Entwined #2) by Tempeste O’Riley

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Desires Guardian coverMost people see Chase Manning as the party-boy twink he seems on the surface. Only James, Chase’s BFF, knows the depth of his loyalty and the extent of the wounds Chase carries inside. When Chase meets Rhys Sayer things don’t go well, but he can’t shake his attraction to the huge, sexy man.

Rhys is a man of contradictions and fear—a strange combination for a PI and bodyguard. He’s in a bad place emotionally when he sets eyes on Chase for the first time. When Chase puts the moves on him, Rhys insults him, thwarting any possibility of a relationship. Rhys doesn’t see himself as a complicated man, but he dreads the very kind of connection he desires.

Just as they’re trying to overcome their uncertainties, Chase is put in harm’s way. Luckily Rhys and their friends have all the right talents to help Rhys save the man of his dreams.

While this was a big step up from Designs of Desire (Desires Entwined, #1), it still left me unsure of some things about the characters and their relationship. I liked Rhys and Chase from Designs of Desire. I honestly felt like this was one big role reversal in this book. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not basing it on both of their physical appearances either. I felt like Chase’s character in the first story was so approachable and happy all the times. I understand people aren’t always happy and he was a secondary character. It wasn’t alot for me to base much on Rhy’s character because he just seemed like a body guard.

I liked the story a lot. However it felt like the mystery was just thrown in there for aesthetics purposes only. I understand Rhys needing a reason for Chase being in his life because of his work, but I felt like there were other ways it could have happened.

My biggest issue with the story was the lack of communication. Come on, you want me to believe that you two weren’t able to talk about why you weren’t talking to each other after 1 night of coming together. I didn’t feel like these two would have that issue. They just seemed to fix their issues magically. What did Rhys exactly do, because based on few terms he used I felt like the “issue” didn’t get rectified.

I did like how protective Chase friends were, oh my goodness. It was like the Twink Gang, they were all over threatening Rhys about treating their friend right. I appreciated it a ton, I loved how both guys had supportive families on both sides. Rhys parents were amazing, and sure his dad giving Dal an ultimatum hurt but we’ll see where that leads in Temptations of Desire (Desires Entwined, #3) . With the intensity of these two, I was happy with the ending. They both wanted to pace their relationship and just get to know each other well.

I recommend this for people reading the series; we do get to see some of Seth and James from Designs of Desire (Desire Entwined #1). I definitely noticed the author’s growth as far as the writing went.

Reese Dante created this cover, and like both previous covers it had symbolism written all over it. The cuff meant something, I would have liked bikes instead but I could appreciate the cuff based on the “mystery thriller” aspect of the book.
