An Alisa Review: Falling for Santa Claus by CJ Anthony

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Falling for Santa ClausWhen Jack Frost’s aunt dies and leaves him her house in the tiny town of Great Falls, Jack seizes the opportunity to escape the rat race of Chicago for the quaint village he loved as a child. On his first night he’s welcomed by a baseball bat and a trespassing warning from Nick St. James—longtime Great Falls resident and infamous curmudgeon.

Jack wants to give Nick the benefit of the doubt—he can’t deny his attraction to the big man—but after several run-ins with Nick’s grumpiness and closed-off heart, he’s ready to give up. Only after discovering the secret Nick’s been covering up for years does he vow to break through Nick’s walls to find the loving man hiding behind them.

I love holiday stories and Christmas in July just gives me more opportunities to read them.  I enjoyed this book and the characters.  Jack is happy to move to Great Falls and has wonderful memories of his childhood there.  It takes a little getting used to, but he loves the town’s residents and the slow pace of life.

Seeing everything through Jack’s eyes made it a bit hard to understand the “ornery and stubborn” Nick.  Through glimpses you could see that Nick isn’t quite as bad as he wants everyone to think.  Jack’s determination to get to know Nick and the person beneath his grumpy exterior is endearing and learning Nick’s secret can make you see him in a different light.
Cover art by Paul Richmond is adorable and catches your eye.

An Alisa Review: Lock and Key by Z. Allora

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Lock and KeyRejected. Heartbroken. Devastated.

Zack Davis wanted to serve only one man, Andrew Nikeman. He was denied because Andrew thought he was too young and because their brothers were together. So Zack crushed his submissive tendencies and focused on being the perfect Dom, giving every sub he played with something he couldn’t have.

After years of denying his submissive side, Entwined’s charity auction “Are you Dom Enough to be a sub?” gives Zack an excuse to get a little of what he’s always craved.

Andrew doesn’t know when his infatuation turned into more, but it kills him to see Zack with a constant parade of submissives. He’d refused to jeopardize his brother’s relationship or become Zack’s regret; however, Zack isn’t a kid anymore, and his brother’s relationship is unbreakable. Now Zack’s popularity and success as a Dom might ruin Andrew’s dreams of collaring him, but he can’t wait any longer to confess his feelings or he risks losing the man he loves forever.

This was a nice story.  When Zack meets Drew for the first time it’s shortly after his eighteenth birthday.  Zack and his younger brother have just moved in with their older brother when they were kicked out by their mom.  Zack knows instantly that Drew is the man he wants to be with forever. When Drew turns Zack away he is devastated and runs to a bad situation.

Zach decides that if he can’t have what he needs, he will make sure that other submissives are able to and that they are not hurt by an incompetent dom as he was.  They both go through the motions while dying a bit inside every time they have to see each other.  Once Drew admits he made a mistake and wants to move forward in a relationship with Zack he feels so frustrated Zack keeps part of himself back.  Drew realizes waiting for Zack to admit his feelings isn’t the right approach and it will take him completely opening himself up for Zack to be open as well.

This story is told from Both Zack and Drew’s points of view.  It made it easier to connect with the characters and know how they were feeling.  All of the characters in this book were great and were supportive of the MCs, they are their own little family and will always stick by each other.  I hope this author does another book in this universe as I would love to see how Zack’s little brother, Jordan, grows up and finally gets a man of his own.

Cover art by K-Koji is great and really give a visual for the turning point of the story.

An Alisa Review: Awakening the Alpha by Carolina Valdez

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Awakening the AlphaBlaze Canis is doing what he loves best. As a shooting range instructor just outside Yellowstone National Park, the former Navy SEAL sniper is still handling firearms. When Shoshone Native Logan Swift Rider walks into his target shooting class one morning, the attraction each man feels for the other is swift and magical. Since Blaze’s SEAL teammates never knew he was gay, let alone a werewolf, he’s confident his new lover need never know of his two natures.

Logan opens his heart and body to loving Blaze in the most intimate ways possible. When he learns what Blaze has hidden of himself, Logan is shattered. Although raised in both the white and Native worlds, it’s Logan’s Indian heritage that tells him he may have fallen for a witch, a skinwalker.

Can Blake convince Logan there’s no evil involved in what he is or will Logan remain convinced he’s been making love to a monster?

Logan and Blaze come from very different backgrounds.  Logan’s Native American heritage and teachings give him a different view of the world from many while Blaze has always really hidden who he was from the world.  They both feel a deep connection to the other very quickly.

When Logan finds out Blaze is a werewolf, he begins to rethink everything he knew about Blaze because of teachings from his youth.  It takes some deep soul searching for him to be willing to talk about his concerns and see Blaze again.

It took a bit for me to connect with the characters, not quite sure why.  Chapter 1 is more of a preface to me and I kept trying to connect it to the MCs to it, but that doesn’t come until a bit later.  Once I really got into the story I could see how open Blaze and Logan were with each other while still holding a bit back.  I’m not sure they ever really resolve the problem, it’ more of both of them just saying okay we’re good.  I also didn’t like that there was never a real ending to the “relationship” that Logan had back in California and no mention of it to Blaze either.

Cover art by Syneca Featherstone is wonderful and perfect for this story.

An Alisa Review: Code Name Jack Rabbit (The Vampire Guard #1) by Elizabeth Noble

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Code Name- Jack RabbitMeet the newest members of the Vampire Guard, where legend and myth meet science and technology.

Jonas Forge, vampire. Once a spy and soldier, now a cop, Forge enjoys the life he’s built with his friends in Flint, Ohio.

Blair Turner, PhD. Blair, a vampire and computer hacker with exceptional skills, shares a powerful empathic bond with Forge, his soul mate.

Declan, vampire, ex-pirate, ex-fur trapper, thief, and con man. Declan is Forge’s former lover and soul mate to Lucas Coate.

Lucas Coate, MD, Flint’s medical examiner. A werewolf living among vampires, Lucas is also one of Forge’s best friends.

Their lives become complicated when an impending Presidential visit throws them headlong into a world of high-tech vampire spies and espionage. Recruited into the Vampire Guard by the secret society of the Akhkharu Nasaru, they uncover a werewolf terrorist organization known as the Qiguan.

Together they must thwart a murder attempt on the open waters of Lake Superior while tracking a previously unknown biological weapon controlled by the Qiquan—a weapon which may very well mean death for one of them.

This was the first book by Elizabeth Noble that I have read and it was very enjoyable.  The book had a bit of a different look at vampires than I have read before.  They weren’t affected by sunlight and they ate regular meals most of the time.

Jonas, Lucas and Declan have been connected to each other for years, Blair is a newer addition to their “family” but no less important than the others.  They all care deeply for each other and even with their complicated pasts will do anything for the others.  The soul mates are the perfect complement to the other but sometimes they just need one of their friends to pull them back from the edge.

I loved reading about them all working together to solve the mystery, each using their own strengths.  However, many times through the book there were a lot of references to things that have happened before the book and I would have loved to learn more about those experiences.  At the end of the book there is a preview for the next book in the series and I can’t wait to read it and see more of these characters.

Cover art is nice and gives a visual for the mysterious creature they find.

An Alisa Review: Soul Seekers by Jake C. Wallace

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

Soul SeekersNineteen-year-old college student Levi Reed has spent his life with hollow emotions and a darkness so deep that he’s convinced he’s losing his mind. He’d give anything to feel something, anything, real.

When a mysterious stranger appears, Levi is convinced the man is trying to kill him. When he’s near, Levi experiences head-crushing pain and something surprising—real emotions for the first time. Jeb Monroe is arrogant, self-assured, closed-off, and handsome, but he isn’t the harbinger of doom Levi assumed. Jeb’s mission: help Levi find his missing soul.

Levi is pulled into the secret world of Seers and Keepers, those born with the innate ability to manipulate souls and tasked with balancing the negative energy they can produce. Levi learns he possesses a rare gift, and he’s in danger. As Jeb and Levi grow closer, they discover a group of zealots who want to harness Levi’s power to cleanse the world of damaged souls. Everyone Levi cares for is threatened unless he agrees to become their tool of death. But agreeing could spell the destruction of humankind. With no one to trust and nothing as it appears, it’s up to Levi to save them all.

JC Wallace did a wonderful job with this story.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this story, but it went above and beyond what I was thinking.  There were enough twists and turns that I didn’t want to put the book down just so I could find out what would happen next.

Levi has never felt any real emotions in his life until he comes close to Jeb.  Unfortunately they aren’t nice emotions and it has Levi thinking the worst.  When Levi and Jeb connect and then learn that the person they have been relying on for answers isn’t who she says she is their world is turned upside down again.

This story is from Levi’s point of view and I would feel how soul crushing everything he has been through has been.  When he connects with Jeb and finally sees some good he immediately thinks the worst when Jeb closes himself off again.  I could feel his confusion over his situation and what to do, but he quickly figures out what must be done.

Cover art by Brooke Albrecht is nice and gives a good idea of the main characters in the story.

An Alisa Review: My Busboy by John Inman

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

My BusboyRobert Johnny just turned thirty, and his life is pretty much in the toilet. His writing career is on the skids. His love life is nonexistent. A stalker is driving him crazy. And his cat is a pain in the ass.

Then Robert orders a chimichanga platter at a neighborhood restaurant, and his life changes—just like that.

Dario Martinez isn’t having such a great existence either. He needs money for college. His shoes are falling apart. His boyfriend’s a dick. And he has a crap job as a busboy.

Then a stranger orders a chimichanga platter, and suddenly life isn’t quite as depressing.

But it’s the book in the busboy’s back pocket that really gets the ball rolling. For both our heroes. That and the black eye and the forgotten bowl of guacamole. Who knew true love could be so easily ignited or that the flames would spread so quickly?

But when Robert’s stalker gets dangerous, our two heroes find a lot more to occupy their time than falling in love. Staying alive might become the new game plan.

John Inman is a new author for me; I own a few books but haven’t gotten to reading them yet.  I was not disappointed with this story, it was wonderful.

Robert is pretty depressed as he turns thirty, with nothing positive happening for him and he doesn’t see it changing anytime soon.  He is taken with Dario when he meets him at his favorite Mexican restaurant and when they see each other again he has a great need to protect him.  Dario realizes pretty fast that he will need to show Robert how he feels for anything to grow between them.

Robert took a little bit to connect to, he was so depressed with himself and his life he couldn’t see anything really happy and he keeps everyone at an arm’s length.  When he meets Dario something clicks and he can start to see the positive side of life.  Dario was so adorable, not much could keep him down but I just wanted to keep him safe throughout the story.  Both of these characters are so loveable and seeing them fall in love for the first time was wonderful.

An Alisa Review: Murder Most Yowl by Quinn Dressler

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Murder Most YowlCat-sitting is a dangerous business.

Cameron Sherwood turned his back on law enforcement the night his investigation led to the death of an innocent gay man. Now Cam spends his time running a business that caters to his favorite animal, cats. But when Cam stumbles upon the body of a friend while feeding her feline, he can’t walk away. Dealing with a sexy yet stubborn sheriff, a matchmaking sister, and a terrifying blind date, Cam must somehow track down a killer, all while keeping the cats around him fed with his gourmet cat treats.

Cam gave up his father’s approval when he left NCIS and came out as gay.  He has had a hard time living out and proud because he doesn’t really know how to, so his sister has taken it upon herself to set him up on a date.  It just so happens to take place shortly after he finds his friend’s body.  Imagine his surprise when his date is none other than Jake, the frustrating sheriff.

I loved both of these characters.  Cam was so open with his feelings and about his life to Jake it was great to see.  They both were so skeptical about their date, but were willing to open to the other.  Their love for their pets helps make the characters easy to connect with.

This was a very well developed story, the mystery and romance ran right alongside each other without one over powering the other.  The book had an open ending and I look forward to more stories about Cam and Jake.

Cover art by AngstyG is perfect and I wouldn’t do anything different.

An Alisa Review: Sins of the Past by Amanda Young

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

Sins of the PastTwo men bonded by love. A long forgotten secret neither knew they shared in common.

Andrew Vought is a wealthy single parent who’s all but given up on love. Ryan Ward is an up-and-coming landscape architect, who’s never believed true love exists.

In each other’s arms, they find the love they’ve sought. But can a budding new love survive the secrets both men harbor?

Amanda Young did a great job with this short story.  Ryan believes he will never know true love because of how he behaved in his younger years.  Andrew has been looking for love for a long time and continues to hope.  Their connection isn’t instant, but they are both willing to work for their relationship.

I connected with both of these characters.  They both slowly approach their relationship, but don’t know what to do when some past decisions come back to haunt them.  I could feel Ryan’s heart breaking when he felt that he would lose Andrew when he realized their connection to each other.

The cover art is very nice and caught my attention.

Dying Sucks

Particularly when you discover there really is a hell. Aden thinks there’s no way he can avoid going down, but when an angel and demon can’t agree over his fate, Aden is given one more month to gain redemption. He doubts he can find a way to become a better man in so short a time. But it’s worth a try, right?

Living sucks

Particularly when you can’t shake free of an obsessive ex. Brody might be managing to hold down his job as a vet, but his personal life is a mess. If he doesn’t pull himself together soon, he’s going to be sliding downhill too fast to stop.

One wet night, on a dark country lane, two worlds collide and destinies change forever.

Barbara Elsborg did a great job with this story.  Aden is getting a second chance to try and be a better person by living up to his potential.  Brody is ready to give up and doesn’t know if it’s worth it to pull himself together.

Aden has had the worst luck when it comes to his life, his parents didn’t love him and he was constantly abused by others when they died.  He was never loved and doesn’t know how to or why you would want to love someone.  Brody thought he loved his ex and when things go too far he finally breaks free only to have him come back to try and get him back.

Both Aden and Brody have heartbreaking back stories that greatly affect their lives.  They both connect with each other and the reader quickly.  They don’t hold back their emotions and are willing to just let everything out which makes understanding the characters easy.  There is a great HFN ending looking a bit in the future which gives hope for both of the characters.

An Alisa Review: Reckless by Caitlin Ricci

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

RecklessWhen his best friend, Lee, offered him his sub as part of a bet, Colton Prier never expected more than a clean condo from the boy. But Tate Nicholson is well-trained, eager, and he likes rope play as much as Colton enjoys tying him up. It should have ended after one night, but they begin meeting in secret, and Colton can’t stop thinking about Tate. It’s a betrayal of his friendship with Lee to fall in love with Tate, but Colton can’t help wanting the sub for himself.

He’s not alone in his feelings, either. Tate thought he was happy with Lee. Not completely fulfilled, but happy enough. But as he spends more time with Colton, he realizes Lee isn’t capable of giving him what he wants anyway. Lee demands his full submission, but Tate doesn’t want to be a lifestyle sub. Colton expects his obedience at times but gives him his freedom more often than not, which is more in line with what Tate wants.

When Tate really needs his Dom and Lee isn’t around to help him, he reaches the tipping point and needs to choose who he wants to give his submission to, and to accept the consequences of his choice when he does.

Caitlin Ricci did a great job with this story.  Colton wins Tate as part of a bet with his best friend.  They both enjoy their time together and end up meeting up by accident and then on purpose in secret.  When Tate decides that his loyalty should be to his dom Colton decides to walk away gracefully until he is called when Tate needs help and Lee isn’t around.

Throughout the story I could feel how confused Colton was when he first realized that Tate would be his perfect sub, but wasn’t one he could ever have.  When Colton had to break away from Tate to avoid being hurt anymore my heart was breaking with his.  Tate has an eye opening experience when Lee doesn’t come when he needs help and Colton is the one who comes he knows he has to make a decision.

You could see the internal conflict that Tate was having when he was with Colton, even through Colton’s eyes.  They both connected so well when they were together.  At the end of the story they are both looking towards their future together.

Cover art by Caitlin Ricci is nice picture and connects with the story.
