An Alisa Review: Hangin’ with My Window Man by Carolina Valdez

Standard

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

hangin-with-my-window-manRyan Halloran is attracted to Boon Andrews the moment he sees him on the window cleaners’ gondola outside his high rise office. But horror sweeps through Ryan when a gondola cable snaps, and his call to 911 saves the lives of Boon and his co-worker.

Although the near-fatal accident brings these two men together, never could two men be further apart in lifestyle and social status. Boon, a tattooed high school drop-out, wears earrings and dresses in frayed cutoffs and Doc Martens boots, and he cleans pools and windows for a living. Ryan, however, holds a master’s degree from the most famous film school in southern California and, as the elegant, cultured, and self-controlled vice president of a motion picture studio, he dresses in Versace suits and Bruno Magli shoes.

Despite their differences, Ryan not only responds to Boon’s carefree spirit and relaxed manner, he lusts for him. And Boon discovers his craving for nude sex play with this man turns out not to be based on gratitude that Ryan saved his life, but out of love.

As Ryan wrestles with work problems that could mean the loss of the film studio, he also falls deeply in love with the one-of-a-kind Boon. But when they start appearing in public together, and a former lover makes an appearance, the differences in their social status may well destroy their future.

This was a sweet short story.  Ryan was deeply hurt by the betrayal of his previous lover and nothing has really made him take notice of anyone until he sees Boon.  Boon is afraid that their connection can’t withstand their differences, but still wants to see if it can work out.

For all his high profile life he doesn’t have much confidence in himself.  We can see his insecurities and the problems he has dealing with conflicts at home and also at work.  Until they are dealt with he definitely needs someone by his side supporting him.  Boon has enough confidence for both of them and quickly knows he needs to look out for Ryan in some ways.  They both complement each other well and work together to grow their relationship.

The cover art is nice and gives a good visual of the characters.

An Alisa Review: Night Train To Venice (Night Train #3) by Carolina Valdez

Standard

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

night-train-to-veniceDiamonds may be a collector’s best friend, but for Dante Rocco, a courier for precious stones and metals, the next delivery could mean death.

Someone is robbing and killing couriers of precious gems and metals in Europe. Global Diamond Couriers in New Orleans assigns their human Italian, Dante, to make a major delivery in Venice. Although pickpocketing is the usual crime there, a wary Alexandros, Dante’s vampire lover, insists he and Malcolm, the other staff immortal, go along as bodyguards.

In Rome, they board the Orient Express to Venice, and Malcolm is welcomed by Nick, a human steward whom he’d met years earlier. The hot, younger man seduces him into a whirlwind romance. But when Nick appears unannounced in their secret Venetian hotel, he’s sucked into a maelstrom of danger and deceit none of them may survive.

This was a wonderful story.  It is great to see Dante and Alex still together celebrating their one year anniversary while in Italy again.  Malcolm has been envious of Alex and Dante’s relationship and realizes something is missing in his life, when he meets Nick again after so many years he can’t help but grab him and hold on.

Dante and Alex are still going strong and Alex even gives Dante a wonderful present on the train.  Dante will do anything for Alex, even suffer through the attentions of the vampire duke, knowing that no matter what Alex will find him and protect him.  Malcolm and Nick are sweet, they had met a party years before but Malcolm thought he was too old for Nick and Nick was never able to find him.  Nick takes the initiative to get them connected again, but once they start Malcolm jumps right in.

We see all four of the main characters’ points of view in this story and can see their struggles and feelings.  Dante has to convince Alex that he wants only him no matter what, while Nick has to learn to deal with the reality of a life with vampires.  I’m so happy Malcolm found someone in this story and they have an outlook of a great future together.

Cover art is great and follows the pattern for the series.

An Alisa Review: Night Train to New Orleans (Night Train Series Book 2) by Carolina Valdez

Standard

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

night-train-to-new-orleansIn New Orleans, the killer still stalks, and confusion and passion heat up the reunion of human and vampire lovers.

In this sequel to Night Train to Naples, confusion, danger and passion heat up the reunion of Italian diamond courier Dante Rocco and his once business rival, then lover–the vampire Alexandros Nicolaides. Alex has never wavered in what Dante means to him, but Dante arrives in New Orleans suddenly unsure of his feelings and the impulsive promise he’d made to leave Italy and move to America. In the historic richness of the French Quarter, Dante must decide how he really feels about Alex even as the powerful ruler of the Louisiana vampires complicates their lives, and Giacomo, an unstable vampire, arrives with their murders on his mind.

This was a wonderful continuance of this series.  Dante is now doubting his feelings and pledge to move to America to be with Alex after their time apart and all the confusion and people trying to undo their relationship is not helping.  Alex takes things into his own hands to show Dante how important it is for them to be together.

Dante continues to be thrown in the deep end of the immortal world while interviewing for a new job with the courier that Alex works for.  He begins to see that he can belong just as Alex begins to fear for his safety more than ever.  Alex struggles with his desire to keep Dante close while also keeping him safe from anyone who means harm.

We once again get to see the story from both characters’ points of view and can see what each character is struggling with.  Dante fights with himself over his feelings for Alex, but after Alex forces him to feel unbidden their relationship just blossoms.  This was a nice ending to these characters’ story, I can’t wait to read the next book to see what is in store for Malcolm.

Cover art is very nice and follows the pattern for the series.

An Alisa Review: Amen To Love by Carolina Valdez

Standard

Rating:  5 stars out of 5

amen-to-love-by-carolina-valdezDr. Bond Bergstrom fights to save the life of a man shot near the lakeside path where he jogs. Later, when the hospital where Bond works as chief of surgery learns the shooter attempted to kill him also, the board insists on assigning security protection to him 24/7 until the killer is caught.

Bond is furious with the decision. Former Navy SEALs, he argues, can protect themselves better than anyone in the world. Not so, counters former Delta Force operative Rory O’Shea. He’s the hot, sexy Irish-American who owns the agency providing the hospital’s routine security.

Bond grudgingly gives in, unaware that O’Shea has an ulterior motive in assigning himself to spend nights with the doctor as his personal bodyguard. Will O’Shea prove he has what it takes to satisfy Bond — both in and out of the bedroom?

This was a wonderful story.  Bond tries to save a man shot near his jogging path and ends up putting himself in danger in the process.  When Rory is forced upon him for protection it takes a bit of compromising for him to accept it is the best solution overall.

This story is told from both character’s points of view, so we are able to see the struggles they both go through.  Bond wants to be a great surgeon and just help people anyway he can.  Rory loves his security business, but has been following Bond from the sidelines for years and will not waste this new opportunity to get to know Bond and see if they can build a future.  I felt so connected with both of these characters and was rooting for them the whole time.

The cover art is nice and catches your eye.

An Alisa Review: Night Train To Naples (Night Train #1) by Carolina Valdez

Standard

Rating:  4 stars out of 5

night-train-to-naples-mlr-pressThe hot, urgent passion of an immortal for his human lover, the vengeful vampire who wants to kill them, and the world of precious stones.

After seven-hundred years, Alexandros Nicolaides has adjusted to life as an immortal. Employed by a New Orleans diamond courier, the gemologist travels to Italy in the hope of gaining a new customer for that business. On the night train from Rome to Naples, he confirms what he’s suspected–someone is following him.

Human Dante Rocco has his reasons for tailing the tall blond. Unaware he follows an immortal, he’s in for a bad shock. When Alex rescues him from thugs, a hot, urgent sexual bond flares between these two rivals for the courier account. As they struggle with the reality of their relationship, they discover they’re now the ones being pursued–by an unstable, vengeful vampire.

Carolina Valdez did a nice job with this story.  These characters feel an instant connection for each other, but feel they should be holding back because they are so different from each other.  Alex begins to full embrace their relationship while it scares Dante.

Dante is shocked when he is thrown into the world of immortals when following a rival diamond courier.  He feels a connection to Alex, but doesn’t know if he can accept his vampire nature fully.  When he is faced with never seeing Alex again he decides to jump.

This story is told from both characters’ points of view so we can see each of their internal struggles.  Both of them want each other, but don’t want to think about what will happen after they have to go back to their jobs after Naples.  The story if left with a bit of a cliffhanger to look forward to the next book in the series and I can’t wait to read it.

Cover art is very nice and caught my eye.

An Alisa Review: Awakening the Alpha by Carolina Valdez

Standard

Rating:  3 stars out of 5

Awakening the AlphaBlaze Canis is doing what he loves best. As a shooting range instructor just outside Yellowstone National Park, the former Navy SEAL sniper is still handling firearms. When Shoshone Native Logan Swift Rider walks into his target shooting class one morning, the attraction each man feels for the other is swift and magical. Since Blaze’s SEAL teammates never knew he was gay, let alone a werewolf, he’s confident his new lover need never know of his two natures.

Logan opens his heart and body to loving Blaze in the most intimate ways possible. When he learns what Blaze has hidden of himself, Logan is shattered. Although raised in both the white and Native worlds, it’s Logan’s Indian heritage that tells him he may have fallen for a witch, a skinwalker.

Can Blake convince Logan there’s no evil involved in what he is or will Logan remain convinced he’s been making love to a monster?

Logan and Blaze come from very different backgrounds.  Logan’s Native American heritage and teachings give him a different view of the world from many while Blaze has always really hidden who he was from the world.  They both feel a deep connection to the other very quickly.

When Logan finds out Blaze is a werewolf, he begins to rethink everything he knew about Blaze because of teachings from his youth.  It takes some deep soul searching for him to be willing to talk about his concerns and see Blaze again.

It took a bit for me to connect with the characters, not quite sure why.  Chapter 1 is more of a preface to me and I kept trying to connect it to the MCs to it, but that doesn’t come until a bit later.  Once I really got into the story I could see how open Blaze and Logan were with each other while still holding a bit back.  I’m not sure they ever really resolve the problem, it’ more of both of them just saying okay we’re good.  I also didn’t like that there was never a real ending to the “relationship” that Logan had back in California and no mention of it to Blaze either.

Cover art by Syneca Featherstone is wonderful and perfect for this story.
