A Barb the Zany Old Lady Review:Love in Spades (Four Kings Security #1) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

This new series kicks off with a sexy group of security men, each of whom have a nickname reminiscent of a suite of cards. In the first installment, King Security assigns Ace Sharpe to guard Colton Connolly. Hired by Colton’s father due to death threats Colton has received, neither Ace nor Colton are prepared for the sparks that fly when they get together. At first resistant to being guarded, Colton ultimately sees that Ace is only doing his job and he likes the sexy guy so what’s the harm in keeping him around?

Fearless, attractive, and assertive, Ace gets in Colton’s face when Colton disregards his personal safety. Gorgeous, handsome, and smart, Colton sees Ace as his opposite, but since opposites attract, that’s a perfect setup. Ms. Cochet builds the background of the various cast of characters involved with King Security mostly by depicting the men’s interactions. For example, when Red shows his concern for a young man who’s hurt, Ace explains that Red’s name comes from the red hearts in a card deck since he’s always the first to offer comfort to someone hurt. It’s very clever and added to the overall enjoyment of getting to know the men who will have recurring roles.

There were, however, a few areas where some behaviors struck me as overly dramatic for the setting. I felt as if I were transported back in time to the era when I read romance paperbacks featuring the fainting heroine and tough hero being faced down by her dastardly father—for example, the scene in which Colton’s father and Ace’s boss find out Colton and Ace have been involved with each other. Lots of shouting, blaming, and drama there. And then there’s the Laz confessing his sex faux pas in front of Red, who then offers Laz comfort as he cries in Red’s arms. Those few pages felt very sixties drama queen to me—and the Laz scene was pointless as it was totally unrelated to the balance of the story.

There were also a few oddities that pulled me out of the story—one occurred when Colton’s father stated something he couldn’t have known at the time. And another, where Colton is asking for forgiveness for someone but he and everyone else seem to have forgotten the critical point that he injured one of their team members. That fact wasn’t mentioned in that scene at all but should have affected any decision to forgive and forget. I know these points may seem vague, but I’m trying to state my issues without giving spoilers. Perhaps they’ll be considered minor by other readers but they disrupted my enjoyment of the book and affected my rating.

That all being said and despite my personal quirks, I think this book is a good start on what should be an interesting and action-packed series. I’m definitely going to read the next book because I’m looking forward to meeting more of the King Security team and I can’t wait to read their adventures.

Cover by Reese Dante depicts a handsome, muscular, tattooed man, standing shirtless against a background of palm trees signifying the Florida setting. The man is wearing dog tags and has a gun in his right hand and a tiny ace tattoo is showing between his thumb and index finger. Bright and colorful, this cover perfectly depicts the description in the book of Ace Sharpe, one of the MCs.

BLURB

Ex-Special Forces soldier Anston “Ace” Sharpe is fighting a different battle these days—one involving the world of private security across the state of Florida. As part owner of Four Kings Security, Ace and his fellow Kings tackle everything from armed transport and investigations to cyber intelligence and executive protection. Cocky, fearless, and brash, Ace isn’t afraid to take risks.

After years of working alongside his father, Colton Connolly is ready to take the helm at Connolly Maritime, but his father’s retirement is put on hold when Colton begins receiving death threats. If that isn’t bad enough, his father signs a contract with Four Kings Security to provide Colton with round-the-clock protection, despite his adamant refusal. Colton’s life has been turned upside down, the last thing he needs is a shadow, especially in the form of infuriating, sexy-as-sin Ace Sharpe, who seems to be on a mission to drive Colton mad.

Sparks fly the moment Colton and Ace meet on a sultry night club dance floor. But getting involved with a client, even one as fiery and beautiful as Colton Connolly, is a line Ace is unwilling to cross. Colton might be attracted to Ace, but he’d been burned before. He might be willing to put his life in Ace’s hands, but not his heart.

As the Florida nights heat up, so does their passion, and Ace and Colton are faced with a difficult choice—take the plunge and risk it all, or play it safe and walk away?

If Ace can keep a deadly threat from robbing Colton of a future….

EXCERPT

“Do I get a gun?” Colton asked.

“Have you ever fired a gun?”

“No. I’m not really a fan.”

“It’s amazing how many clients believe we’re going to arm them. Even if you were an expert marksman, you wouldn’t get a gun. You get a pen.”

Wait…. “A pen?”

“Yep. Titanium.” Ace handed Colton a silver pen, and Colton hesitantly took it from him. He held it up in front of him and peered at it.

“I’m supposed to fend off an attacker with a pen?” Was it a Bond pen? If he clicked the end or twisted it, would it release a toxic gas or set off an explosive? He clicked the end, and the ink nib popped out. Nope. It was just a pen.

“It’s a tactical weapon,” Ace assured him. “With the right amount of force in the right place, it can cause some serious damage.”

Colton eyed him skeptically. “You’re messing with me.”

“No.”

“What if they have a gun?”

“That’s a different lesson.”

Colton sighed. “Okay, show me.”

“Not if you’re going to give me attitude.”

“I’m not giving you attitude.”

Ace held his hand out. “Give me the pen.”

“No. It’s my pen.” Colton clutched it to his chest.  “You gave it to me.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes. This is the only defense I have. You’re not taking it from me.”

“Colton, you do realize I could take it from you without you even realizing.”

“Oh yeah, Mr. Hot-Shot-Green-Beret? Then do it.”

“Colton,” Ace warned.

“Come on. I want to see your super-secret moves.”

“I don’t even know what to say to you right now, other than you’re being ridiculous. And I have your pen.” Ace held up a silver pen.

“What the hell?” Colton gaped at his empty hands before his head shot up. “How’d you do that?”

“With years of practice. Now, are you going to pay attention?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“Can I have my pen back?”

Ace pressed his lips together like he was trying to keep from laughing. The guy was so fucking sexy. Colton wanted to climb him and do terrible things to his body. Instead he took the pen Ace handed him.

“Thank you.”

“Okay, put that in your pocket. First I’m going to demonstrate the moves.” Ace pulled his own pen from his pocket.”

“Ooh, yours is black. It looks very serious.”

“It’s the same as yours, but black.”

“It camouflages with your clothes.”

“Yes.”

“Does it come in different colors?”

“You should know that I’m two seconds away from putting you in a sleeper hold.”

A Jeri Release Day Review: Roses in the Devil’s Garden (Fallen Rose #1) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

As a big Charlie Cochet fan, I was eager to read the first of a new series coming from her. And this is both very different, and in some ways quite a bit the same as her THIRDS series.

This is a VERY short primer to what I assume is a series coming out. Set during Prohibition, the story follows Harlan and Nathan- best friends, lovers and detectives in the Prohibition unit. There is pretty much no such thing as an “out” gay man, but within clubs and speakeasies, it is often overlooked.
Honestly, there isn’t a ton here to review. I will say it is a good set up and I definitely want more. Ms Cochet writes seamlessly with 20’s era lingo and style. There were a few things that I questioned, but I am hoping more comes to light with the next book(s).

The cover art by Aaron Anderson is another winner by this artist and works for the story and characters.

A Lila Release Day Review: Roses in the Devil’s Garden (Fallen Rose #1) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Working for the Bureau of Prohibition means facing dangerous criminals, desperate gangsters, speakeasies springing up overnight, a city controlled by corruption, and an employer that can’t be trusted. If that’s not enough, best friends and lovers Harlan Mackay and Nathan Reilly still bear the scars—both seen and unseen—that they earned fighting in the First World War. When a ghost from the past resurfaces to destroy everything they hold dear, it might be the last straw for Harlan and Nathan.

New York City is a war zone, the government is in the pocket of organized crime, and the exposure of their illicit romance is a constant danger. For Harlan and Nathan, it’s not a question of whether they’ll escape unscathed, but of which enemy will get them first….

Roses in the Devil’s Garden is not what I was expecting. This is my first time reading this book even when the original story was part of a free writing event and I’m a fan of this author. I read the blurb and was curious about a love story taking place during the Prohibition. Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with the characters.

It takes a moment to get used to the voices in the book and to situate the characters within the period. The beginning is a bit stiff, but it is to be expected when being introduced to a new setting. The characters are locations are detailed but in this case, it makes the story slow.

As most of this author’s books, the story has funny moments and a lovely relationship. If you want something other than contemporary or one of the author’s paranormal stories this may work for you. If you are not a fan of historical shorts, you should skip this one.

The cover art by Aaron Anderson goes well with the characters and the time period. It’s definitely inviting.

An Alisa Audiobook Review: The Soldati Prince (Soldati Hearts #1) by Charlie Cochet and Narrator: Manuel Pombo

Rating:  3.5 stars out of 5

One moment Riley Murrough is living a normal life working in a coffee shop, and the next he’s running for his life from demons, learns he bears the mark of a shape-shifter king from a magical realm, and—worst of all—he’s destined to become the mated prince to the arrogant tiger shifter he would rather strangle.

Khalon, the shifter king, is equally distraught at the idea of being bound to a human prince, and along with his Soldati warriors, he sets out to return Riley to his own world where he belongs. On their journey they might discover why the priestess brought them together—if they can escape the demons and make it to her alive.

I didn’t really know what to expect going into this story but I did enjoy it.  Khalon is appalled at the idea of mating with a human and he does not disguise this while Riley is just trying to figure out what is going on.

Khalon pretty much just acts like a spoiled brat to Riley and their situation.  Even when Riley sees the sweet side of him it’s hard to really start to like him.  I could feel Riley’s confusion about the situation and what would you expect but those around him seemed to think he needed to adapt faster.  The characters started to grow on me some more as the story went on.

Manuel Pombo did a nice job narrating this story.  I could get a feel of the characters’ emotions while listening.  The different voices he used for the characters helped me keep up with what was going on.

I love the cover art by LC Chase is nice and seems to work well for this story.

Series: Soldati Hearts #1

A Lila Audiobook Review: Finding Mr. Wrong by Charlie Cochet and Andrew McFerrin (Narrator)

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

He’s nobody’s definition of Mr. Right—but that might make him perfect.

Matthew Hart is heir to the family fortune and owner of Hart & Home. When a near-death experience has him fretting over the future, he decides he needs a husband, and not just any husband—an appropriate man to protect the Hart legacy. The last thing Matthew expects is to cross paths with Jax Foster, his first love and the boy who crushed his heart when he disappeared.

Jax is unlikely to make Matthew’s list of suitable candidates. Bad boy, vagabond, deep in debt, with a father who can’t keep out of trouble, Jax has nothing to offer—except his heart and a second chance at the romance they never got to explore.

Finding Mr. Wrong is a sweet second chance story. It has two unlikely cupids and a list of qualities a good husband should have. In the end, Matt will find all those in the less likely place and with the last person he would have expected.

The author did a great job letting the reader know how important Jax and Matt were to each other since the moment they met. By the time they see each other again, the reader is ready for them to have their happily ever after. It’s easy to cheer for them.

Even when the plot and the bases of the story are somewhat traditional, the main characters’ jobs and backgrounds bring them to the front, having those aspects carry the story. They are well written and interesting to get the reader wanting more with each page.

Andrew McFerrin did a nice job bringing all the characters to life. I especially enjoyed Jax’s characterization and the differentiation between the rest of the clan.

The cover by Bree Archer is an adaptation of the e-book cover and follows the traditional Dreamspun series style. I only wish the model looks were a bit more realistic.

A Jeri Release Day Review: Tried & True (THIRDS #10) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Book 10, Tried and True wraps up the THIRDS series. While I am sad, because I LOVE THESE BOOKS, Charlie Cochet is continuing on with a spin off series based on TIN. So it isn’t goodbye, just see you soon.

If that paragraph doesn’t make any sense to you, go read these books. Seriously. “I don’t like paranormal” “I don’t read shifters”. As a friend and I call it- it’s the Rule of THIRDS. You have to throw out all preconceived notions because this series is so worth it.

Ok, on to book 10…..

It’s the big event we’ve all been waiting for. Dex and Sloan get married! We have waited a long time for this. Our guys have been through a lot. And they are going to go through more. They are moving on from Destructive Delta at THIRDS and becoming TIN agents. But there are still a lot of secrets, a ot of unknowns. And it all comes to a head in this story.

Everyone we have met is involved in this story.  And yet it doesn’t seem overstuffed with characters. We have gotten to know them all and they are all represented well.

But before the wedding they have to go through a kidnapping, and attempted kidnapping, several assassination attempts and yes, another kidnapping. But in the end, all of the loose ends are tied up. We know everything.  Finding out who (and why) Dex’s parents were killed all of those years ago leading up to all of the events in the past 10 books is satisfying. The big reveal could have been so many people. Someone we knew really well, someone brought in just for this. But, as always, no spoilers from me.

This book (and series, really) made me laugh out loud, cry, gasp, cringe and swoon.  Charlie Cochet told the story of an unbelievable world in a completely believable way. I never felt like I was reading “paranormal”. I just felt like I was reading a really awesome story with lots of sex, romance, action and intrigue.

Farwell Destructive Delta. I will miss you. But I look forward to TIN. Have some Gummy Bears on me.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is terrific and in keeping with the characters.

A Jeri Release Day Review: Gummy Bears & Grenades (THIRDS #10) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4 stars out of 5
If you’ve read my reviews before, you know that I absolutely adore the THIRDS series. I eagerly await them and will put down whatever I am reading to pick the newest up. They are just straight up entertaining.
This installment was a novella. Which means I devoured it in an hour (I’m a fast reader). Set the night of Dex’s bachelor party, we watch the guys- and a few girls- drink, dance, party….and get into sticky situations. Because it is Dex and that is what happens.
I am fairly certain that every single character has at least a cameo in this novella. And there are a lot. So honestly, the reason it is not getting more than 4 stars is the amount of stuff crammed in this book. It was a bit too much and took a bit away from the story.
Did I totally laugh? Yep. Swoon? Yep. Giggle? Yep.
And she has left me panting for more.
Cover Artist: L.C. Chase.  The cover is absolutely perfect.  Wouldn’t change a thing.

A Lila Release Day Review: The Foxling Soldati (Soldati Hearts #2) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

Foxling Toka has served the Soldati king for centuries, and now he attends to the kingdom’s cherished Soldati prince. It’s a position of honor, and as Toka helps the once-human prince adapt to their magical realm, he finds joy in their friendship. He also grows bolder in his encounters with Rayner, Soldati warrior and the king’s second. But the laws are clear: servants and Soldati are not permitted to mate. It doesn’t matter that Toka lost his heart to the dashing cad long ago.

Rayner never imagined he would fall in love with a servant, but the clever and beautiful foxling has ensnared him, and he resents the regulations keeping them apart. When an arrogant and spiteful king visits from a neighboring realm, Rayner is in danger of losing everything. But Soldati warriors don’t surrender, and he intends to fight all the harder to keep Toka where he belongs—in Rayner’s arms.

The Foxling Soldati is a perfect combination of longing, love, and sweet nothings. All the encounters between Toka and Rayner showed how much they cared for each other, even before they realized the depths of their love. It was refreshing to read how they interact, not only with each other but we those around them–including those that wanted to harm them.

It’s not often that a sequel is better than the first book in the series, but in this case, it is true. Perhaps because we already know the world, their customs, and the characters making it easier to concentrate on the plot and the romance instead of trying to place the story.  All the extra details just add to a well-built world.

The story has excruciating moments in which the reader fears for Toka, Rayner, and the future they want to build together. But the author did an excellent job keeping the scenes to the point and the overall plot simple and intense.

The ending fits the romance and the drama in the story. Overall, this is great short to read between stories–with lots of aww moments and cheering for the underdog. A very cute love story.

The cover by L.C. Chase is beautiful and perfect for the story. Toka’s depiction matches the characteristic mentioned in the story well. The colors matched the previous book and we get to see Toka’s and Rayner’s shifted forms too.

A Jeri Release Day Review: Darkest Hour Before Dawn (THIRDS #9) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Book 9 of the THIRDS series takes us away from not only the usual main characters of Dex and Sloan, but also out of their team Destructive Delta. This installment involves Sebastian Hobbs- older brother of Hobbs- and Hudson, the medical examiner at THIRDS HQ.

Seb and Hudson had been a couple. Going so far as to have Seb mark Hudson. But when a child dies while out on a call, they blame themselves. Ignoring the pull of their union, they tip toe around each other for years. But Seb is tasked with watching out for Hudson because the unseen enemy has been keeping tabs on him.

Seb and Hudson have always been great supporting players in the THIRDS universe. Every fan I know wanted them to get their own book and work toward their happily ever after. This book really made the wait worth it.

We still see “our” guys, Dex, Sloan and the crew- but the focus really is on Seb and Hudson. Not only seeing them together, but seeing Hudson with the Hobbs family. Before the tragedy that tore them apart, Hudson was fully ingrained with the Felids.

And just when you think it is all sweet and happy and rainbows…….BAM! She does it again. I won’t say what. But I will say I texted another reviewer who had read it before me practically screaming my question at her. She laughed at me. Keep reading, she said. Like stopping was an option.

Seb is so, so, SO sweet. I just love him. And even though it was Hudson who kept them apart, you really understand why.

A lot happens in this book. There is more introduction to the new bad guys. Thank goodness for her glossary at the beginning!

And the ending. The ending is just perfect.

Cover Artist: L.C. Chase.  Cover works for the story and branding the series.
