A Jeri Release Day Review: Thick & Thin (THIRDS #8) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

thick-and-thin-by-charlie-cochet***This has spoilers if you haven’t read the previous seven books! If you haven’t- what is wrong with you!***

As you might have noticed from previous reviews of the series- I love the THIRDS books. And I am not big on paranormal/shifter books at all. Someone convinced me to read book 1 and it was downhill from there.  If you have no idea what I am talking about, move along. Or go back to book one and catch up. I wish I could start over.

Book 8 is a novella (sob! I want more!), because it was necessary to tie up some loose ends from book 7 and get us ready for book 9. I actually totally understand this as it would have been too much in the previous book and the next book focuses on two different main characters.

Our focus this time is Dex and Sloan, our original couple.  Dex and Sloan have quite a bit of big news to share not only with the team and their friends, but also with Tony- Dex’s father and the man in charge of the team. News like, they are engaged, Sloan is now a Human-Therian Hybrid and they are becoming spies for the rogue group TIN. No big whoop!

The fall out from all of those three pieces of news, plus what it is going to do to Destructive Delta is the main focus of this novella and very necessary. You still get the laugh out loud funny, the sweet, the action and the oh OH so sexy times. You’ll see.

This just whetted my appetite- especially since there is a book 9 teaser at the end- and will keep me coming back for more.

Cover art by L.C. Chase is hot, eye-catching and works in every way.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Release Day Review: Disarming Donner (North Pole City Tales #5) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

disarming-donnerNumber 5 in the North Pole City Tales, Charlie Cochet brings us another very sweet story of elves, fairies, Jack Frost, and Rudy and his fellow Rein Dear.  Reading these stories is like reading an adult Christmas tale, complete with toy soldiers and sugar plum fairies.

In this story, Cupid’s half-brother, Calder, is in North Pole City to train Cupid, now that it’s been revealed that he is part dark elf.  He needs to learn to control his magic, and Calder, a good elf at heart, is the most sensible choice. Calder is a big guy, handsome, dark-skinned, and attractive to the diminutive Donner, Cupid’s friend.  Donner, with his violet-colored eyes and sweet temperament unknowingly attracts Calder’s attention.  But Donner, like the others in NP City, wants nothing to do with a Dockalfar—a dark elf, and despite his attraction to Caldar, he keeps him at bay.  Until an accident happens that changes everything.

Honestly?  These stories shouldn’t make any sense, and they shouldn’t be so darn cute or make me want to gobble them up faster than Christmas cookies, but they do.  Too sweet for some? Maybe. But I’ll bet once readers start this series, it will be very hard to put the books down. I know I’m sticking with it to the end of the series, and I recommend that others do the same.  Another super sweet stocking stuffer to share with my friends, this is my holiday auto-buy every year.

Cover art by the inimitable Paul Richmond depicts a shy Donner being courted by Calder with a sweet treat Donner won’t be able to resist—a perfect match for this story.

A Lila Release Day Review: The Soldati Prince (Soldati Hearts #1) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

the-soldati-princeOne moment Riley Murrough is living a normal life working in a coffee shop, and the next he’s running for his life from demons, learns he bears the mark of a shape-shifter king from a magical realm, and—worst of all—he’s destined to become the mated prince to the arrogant tiger shifter he would rather strangle.

Khalon, the shifter king, is equally distraught at the idea of being bound to a human prince, and along with his Soldati warriors, he sets out to return Riley to his own world where he belongs. On their journey they might discover why the priestess brought them together—if they can escape the demons and make it to her alive.

The Soldati Prince is an interesting take on shifters and royalty. Even when the author is known for her shifters, the tigers in this story are completely different from the other characters she had written before. I like the idea of them shifting back into their clothes and being part of the royal family.

The story is short for the amount of world-built in it. From the very beginning, we get to know Riley, and through him, the new world in which the book takes place. There are a lot of action scenes with interesting antagonists and new ways of life. Just like Riley, the reader has to learn what to expect when dealing with the demons trying to take over.

I like the tension between Riley and Khalon and how they tried to stay away from each other. But the best part is when they become friends. They are a nice couple to read about and have an easy chemistry. Their sense of humor is great too. They worked well together and is lovely to see them interact with the villagers–especially the kids.

Seeing the new world from Riley’s human perspective is a fun part in the book. Their travel to see the priestess takes most of the story and it’s slow in parts. Some questions still unanswered but it’s to be expected since it’s the first book in the series. The author also did a nice job setting up the main characters in the next installment.

The cover by L.C. Chase shows Riley–wearing his leathers and holding his sword. He’s accompanied by two Soldati warrior tigers, and we can see small details about the realm in the background.

A Jeri Release Day Review: THIRDS Beyond the Books: Volume 2 by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

thirds-beyond-the-books-vol-2If you are a THIRDS fan, you get excited about the next book coming out. If you are a rabid THIRDS fan, you join fan groups and wait for Thursdays. Because on Thursdays, Ms Cochet gives us what she calls “THIRDS Thursday”. A snippet  of a story that isn’t in the books. We love those magic words “THIRDS Thursday is up!” so we can run to her website to sate our thirst for all things Dex and company.

If you have no idea what I am talking about at this point- just move on. Or actually, go back and start with the first book Hell and High Water. Then you will understand. If you are wondering how you had no idea you were missing THIRDS Thursday- it’s your lucky day! Volumes I and II of Beyond the Books brings together all those shorts into one convenient place.

These stories are at times sweet, sometimes hot, very often funny, and when she really wants to torture us, they can make you cry. These shorts are almost like movie outtakes, or scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor. I know that there are “prompts” that she uses to get a story started- often sent to her by fans. Like me. But, sadly, my prompt hasn’t yet been deemed worthy of a story.

You can easily read the whole book at once- or you can savor it and read a few at a time. Because they are all the characters we know and love but they hold not great importance to the Books (the original series), you can pick it up and put it down.

Of course I recommend these books. Any THIRDS fan worth their Cheesy Doodles needs them in their library. And the proceeds go to Big Cat Rescue.

All royalties from this book will be donated to the Big Cat Rescue.http://bigcatrescue.org/

Cover art by L.C. Chase works perfectly, including the Cheesy Doodles.

SeriesTHIRDS

A Jeri Review: Smoke and Mirrors (THIRDS book 7) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Smoke and MirrorsYou have read the THIRDS series, right? If you haven’t- READ IT! Start at the beginning. Trust me.
Smoke and Mirrors is book seven in the excellent series, THIRDS. This book picks up with the serious cliffhanger ending from Catch a Tiger by the Tail, book 6. As fans of the series know, we were left wndering what happened to Dex when Sloane woke up to find him gone. And boy do we find out.
While many of the books deal with various relationships- Dex and Sloane, Ash and Cael, Calving and Hobbs- there is always an intriguing story behind it all. Complex and interesting, the continuing story sucks you in and keeps you coming back for more. To say you get invested in these characters is an understatement.
In this installment, there are no new relationships being formed. Instead, this book focuses all on the story. What really happened to Dex’s parents. Who know what. How intricate the web is. Who can you trust and not trust? Watching the team come together to save and help one of their own shows how tight they all are, We continue to see the romantic involvements between the various couples, and we hope beyond hope for other couples to form.
I have to say that the one big twist was pretty apparent even before it was revealed. Even with that knowledge, it was no less gasp worthy.
I have to mention that there was one brief part in the book that was so relevant to what is happening in the news, I wondered briefly if Ms.Cochet was psychic.
These books make you think, make you swoon, make you literally laugh out loud and make you cry. Although I love that it is a “gay romance”  I would hazard a guess that if it were a mainstream romance it would be a chart buster and have producers fighting for the movie rights.
The tagline of “Everything changes” whetted our appetites and this book completely satisfied.
Cover art by L.C. Chase is perfect for the book and series.

A MelanieM Review: Forgive and Forget (Dreamspun Desires) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

Forgive and ForgetHe’s hot. He’s dangerous. And he can’t remember anything.

As the owner of Apple’n Pies, Joe Applin leads a quiet, uneventful life, content to spend his days serving customers who come from all over to eat his delicious homemade pies. Along with his motley crew—Bea, Elsie, and Donnie—Joe couldn’t be happier in his little kingdom of baked goods and java.

Experience has taught Joe that love is overrated—and at times dangerous. He has no intention of repeating past mistakes. But then he meets a mysterious, handsome man with amnesia, and Joe can’t deny something sweet is in the works. He isn’t one to take risks, not with his heart and certainly not with his life, but the more time he spends with the man he knows as Tom, the closer he is to losing both.

Charlie Cochet’s Forgive and Forget picks up and runs with the ‘mystery man who can remember who he is’ trope and turns it into a wonderful quick moving romance in another of Dreamspinner Press’ Dreamspun Desires series.

Starting with the character of Joe Applin and the welcoming crew at Joe’s pie cafe, Apple’n Pies, Cochet creates a memorable cast and location guaranteed to pull the reader in and keep them throughly absorbed in Joe’s little corner of the world and his developing romance.  I thought Joe Applin had such a nice balance of quirks and professionalism, that it made his cafe real, his pies sound mouth watering delicious and his character believable and someone I could connect with.  You laughed with Joe and you hurt with Joe, that’s how much I liked this character.

I felt that way about Bea, and Elsie and Donnie too.

Then along comes “Tom”, aka our mystery man.  Tom is the one that seems too good to be true.  Handsome, good at everything, his eyes all but sparkles and yes, he’s gay and attracted to Joe.  Had Charlie Cochet been writing another story in another series, maybe I might have had a little eye roll here.  But again, the author is writing a story in a series that’s bringing back a style of romance that is perhaps not only a tad naive in outlook but originally launched when plots were, if not not as complex, then maybe more streamlined in approach.  So Tom is welcomed with a wary if swift embrace by all, including this reader, and the romance is on.

Yes, I loved that approach to romance too.  Its warmhearted, sexy, and occasionally funny.  You want these men to be together, no matter the odds, a clear sign the author has succeeded in her writing and in the love building between Joe and “Tom”.   There’s the mystery and a bit of suspense.  The ending brings things full  circle which is, again, in keeping with the format of the series and writing this story is going for. I won’t spoil it for you. Needless to say I loved this story and absolutely recommend  it to all.

Forgive and Forget is a quick, heartwarming, absorbing story.  I picked it up and forgot about everything else until I put it down.  I wouldn’t even mind if Charlie Cochet gave us a trip back to their world and let us in to see how they are doing, a Forgive and Forget  II.

Until then, go grab this up and get started on an enjoyable  trip to a New York pie cafe owned by a man named Joe and his  mystery man searching for love and something more.

Cover art by Paul Richmond continues the terrific job that is a hallmark of this series.

An Ali Audiobook Review: Healing Hunter’s Heart (A Little Bite of Love #2) by Charlie Cochet, Narrator Nick J. Russo

Rating: 3.5  out of 5 stars
HealingHuntersHeartAUDSMMonths after being forced to leave his lover and mate Ari Jannsen behind, Hunter Devin settles into his role as Enforcer for the newly formed Deagan Clan under the rule of his new Alpha and best friend Tristan “Trip” Hagan. Along with Hunter’s brother Boone, their nephews, sister, and mother, Hunter finally has the family he’s always wanted, but without his little rebel Ari, his heart is incomplete.

The Hagan Clan is unable to accept the Deagan Clan’s betrayal for walking away and taking the clan’s pups with them. War looms. As both clans plan their attack, a greater enemy plots against them. But Hunter is determined to get his Ari back. Bonds are put to the test and unexpected alliances are made as Hunter and his clan set out to protect their own and end the spreading heartache.

This was an enjoyable story about two shifters who are separated after a bunch of them branch off to a new clan.  Ari and Hunter have had a secret relationship for years and an act of violence ends up keeping them apart against their wills.  The book starts 5 years previously and gives you the foundation for their relationship.  It then brings us to the current time and we proceed with the current story.  The transition between the two times was smooth and worked well as a storytelling style.  I liked the two main characters as a couple and they had some really sweet moments together.  I thought they were a good match and I liked them together a lot.  The only reason I didn’t rate it higher is the overall story wasn’t my thing.  This is totally a case of “It’s me not the book.”  I found the story to be quite sweet and quite fluffy and while there isn’t nothing wrong with either of those, they’re not  my thing.  I prefer gritty, angsty books.  There are a lot of similarities to the author’s Thirds series and I think if you’re a fan of that series you should definitely check out this one.  I think you’ll like it a lot.  This book is the second in this series but can be read as a standalone.  The author covers the back story well.  The first story in this though is a novella and it is free so I recommend you that you read it first.

I listened to this on audio and have mixed feelings.  I thought narrator Nick J. Russo did an excellent job on the two main characters, Hunter and Ari.  The first part of the book that was almost all them I enjoyed a lot.  Towards the end though when there were multiple characters I found it lacking.  I did not care for a lot of the side character voices.  It’s one of those things that is hard to explain.  I don’t have concrete complaints.  I just didn’t like many of the voices.

Cover by L. C. Chase. I like the cover.  I think it is average.  It’s not bad but it also does not stand out.

A Jeri Review: Catch a Tiger by the Tail (THIRDS #6) by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Catch a Tiger by the TailCalvin Summers and Ethan Hobbs have been best friends since childhood, but somewhere along the line, their friendship evolved into something more. With the Therian Youth Center bombing, Calvin realizes just how short life can be and no longer keeps his feelings for his best friend a secret. Unfortunately, change is difficult for Ethan; most days he does well to deal with his Selective Mutism and Social Anxiety. Calvin’s confession adds a new struggle for Ethan, one he fears might cost him the friendship that’s been his whole world for as long as he can remember.

As partners and Defense Agents at the THIRDS, being on Destructive Delta is tough at the best of times, but between call-outs and life-threatening situations, Calvin and Ethan not only face traversing the challenges of their job, but also working toward a future as more than friends.

Well, Charlie Cochet has done it yet again. Quite often when there is a series of books, the more books there are, the more the quality and story lines wane. Not so in this, the 6th book of the THIRDS series.

The first four books were based around Dex and Sloane, the fifth book was Ash and Cael. This installment brings us the budding romance between work partners and best friends Calvin and Hobbs (yes, Calvin and Hobbs).

Calvin- a human agent for THIRDS, and Hobbs- his Therian THIRDS partner have been inseparable since childhood. Although obviously smaller and not as strong, Calvin always had Hobbs’ back. Hobbs is plagued with debilitating anxiety and selective mutism. Calvin is one of only two people he can talk to; the other being one of his brothers.

Working so closely together at THIRDS and watching their teammates couple up, the lines between friends and more than friends begins to blur. But both are terrified of losing the friendship which has gotten them through some tough things in life.

The budding, tentative romance between the two is beautiful. They already love each other so much and to see that love grow into romantic love is swoon worthy. They don’t jump into it though, as they are unsure of how to act and behave with this new thing between them. Add in severe anxiety, a ridiculously dangerous job and family that doesn’t always understand and you have a great engaging story that keeps you turning the pages.

One of the great things about this series is that they aren’t just romance and sex. They are great stories in a world that is both very different and very similar to the one we live in.

It is nearly impossible for me to give a 5 star review and the reason this book gets 4 ½ instead of 5 is that so many of the chapters ended virtually the same way- or with the same thoughts. It got a bit tedious as I didn’t need to be reminded of the sentiment constantly. There is also a cliff hanger that makes you want to throw your kindle across the room, but them run to get it and start the book over again.

The cover by L.C. Chase is in the same vein as pervious, but with Calvin front and center with Hobbs’ back behind him- which speaks to not only Hobbs’ anxiety but also to them always having each other’s backs.

A Mika Review: Between the Devil and the Pacific Blue by Charlie Cochet

Rating: 5 stars of 5    ★★★★★

The Devil and The Pacific Blue coverFor the last six months, Detective James Ralston has worked the nightshift as security for the Pacific Blue Hotel, and every night at 2 a.m. his rounds lead him to the radio room where the handsome and mysterious Franklin Fairchild sits listening to waltzes as old as the hotel itself. James is drawn to Franklin, but Franklin is a man at the end of his rope, and James has no intention of getting caught up in whatever trouble Franklin is in. A heated encounter late one night sends James down a disturbing path and has him questioning everything around him, including his very sanity.

I was enthralled with this story from beginning to end. I read it straight through and forgot it was a novella. I wanted so much more. This had a noir feeling to it, but was in a modern setting. I personally think Charlie’s writing skills have elevated. That is what it seems to me. I mean this was 60 pages of goodness. Imagine a full length novel. It had an American Horror Story feel towards it, less gruesome more romance, but still the tone of the story was set and carried out perfectly.

I figured out things very early on, but I was giddy with joy that I’m actually getting a story about this topic. Franklin and James are awesome. James has this aura about him that screams old soul. He’s working at Pacific Blue Hotel for part-time work. He’s a veteran of the military and police force, but in the way he carried himself in the story you wouldn’t guess it. I loved the way Franklin spoke. He was a total gentleman. He was kind, and gallant something we do not see in most M/M guys lately. I truly did enjoy this mystery novella, and I hope Charlie continues on writing stories like this.

Cover Art by Garrett Leigh: I really enjoyed the cover of the story. It sets the tone of the mystery. The chair is important in the story and I think it’s nicely done.

A BJ Review: Charmed and Dangerous: Ten Tales of Gay Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy – authors Jordan Castillo Price, Rhys Ford, Ginn Hale, KJ Charles, Nicole Kimberling, Jordan L. Hawk, Astrid Amara, Andrea Speed, Lou Harper, Charlie Cochet

Charmed and DangerousTake a cauldron full of magic, add a pinch of humor, a dash of snark and a huge dollop of m/m goodness, and what do you get? Charmed and Dangerous: Ten Tales of Gay Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy. This all-new collection is packed with arcane action and intrigue, and every story will whisk you away to a fantastical world where the hero finds his prince and the paranormal investigator always gets his man.

Overall Rating:  4.25 stars out of 5

Tales of magic in some of its many forms with, according to the intro, a theme of sympathetic monsters. Well, hell, doesn’t that play right into my love for a good anti-hero! Plus when I saw the lineup of authors on this one, my mouth just about fell open. What a line up! I’m so on board to read this one. Please note that a few of the stories hook into a series and doubtless you will enjoy them those few more if you’re familiar with the series. One of them was a series I’d read, but the other, unfortunately, I was not at all familiar with as it’s a new to me author. Therefore, I discussed that one but did not rate it as I didn’t feel I had the background to do it justice.

The stories are listed in the order in which they appear in the anthology rather than by rating.

Dim Sum Asylum by Rhys Ford – 3.5 stars
Half-fae Detective Roku MacCormick works Arcane Crimes in San Francisco’s Chinatown. He’s cleared for duty after shooting his last partner and back on the job with a new case and a new partner. Trent Leonard, isn’t at all what he’d expected.

I own some books by this author that I’ve not gotten around to reading, but after this I definitely will soon. Because she can tear up the page.

Rich with description and detail, and since I’ve actually lived in San Francisco for a while, that was pretty cool for me. It starts with a rip-roaring chase scene through the streets of Chinatown complete with dragons and mermen, but despite the action I found the story hard to sink into. I felt lost, like I’d been thrown into the middle of an action movie with nothing to hold on to or maybe like jumping into part two of a series when I’d missed the beginning–it was jarring and confusing. Chapter two did clear up a lot of things and bring me more smoothly into the world and story, but the overall fast pace continued and it was hard for me to connect with the characters until closer to the end. That said, the imagery, imagination and details are amazing and vibrant. And the sex was smoking. If you like a kick ass story that goes from zero to sixty in five seconds flat with a flaming hot sex chaser, this story is for you!

Swift and the Black Dog by Ginn Hale – 3.75 stars
The wizard Jack Swift became a national hero when he killed a tyrant and won the revolution. They even made movies about him! But now it seems like someone in the new government wants him dead.

Well-written, superb imagery. So wizards aren’t well accepted; they’re mostly considered trouble. And gay men are scorned as well. That, and living with his past, makes life hard for Jack despite his hero status.

First few chapters, the author did three things. One: The beginning of this story was slow to pull me in—until suddenly it grabbed me by the throat. Two: I didn’t like Jack much—and then it was made vividly clear that neither did he. Three: In one paragraph, one sentence really, I suddenly hated Peter with a fiery passion that put me completely in Jack’s corner yelling, “Kill the bastard, Jack. Kill him NOW!” Except that would be real hard considering… ah, well… no spoilers.

There’s a romance here, but it’s neither sexy nor sweet. Mostly this story is an eloquent, twisted tale of betrayal and revenge.

A Queer Trade by KJ Charles – 4 stars
Apprentice magician Crispin Tredarloe returns to London to find his master dead and some of the papers he’d written spells upon sold. Some of those spells might mean death so he sets out to get them back. Waste paper seller Ned Hall can’t resist Crispin, but can the two find the papers and prevent a disaster?

Well-written with a beginning that pulled me into it quickly. I enjoyed that it was written from both character’s POV as it gave me a connection to them both. Two likable main characters, but Ned especially for sticking by Crispin as he did. There was chemistry and some lovely hot, sexy bits between them. Nice plot that picked up speed as it went along with a satisfying resolution.

However, I should mention that this story did have parts that rather grossed me out. So warning, possible high ICK factor here, depending on what pushes your ick buttons, of course. *shudder*

Magically Delicious by Nicole Kimberling – 4 stars
Attacks against NIAD agents aren’t Keith Curry’s department–until his transmogrified goblin boyfriend, Gunther, is the target. Keith begins working the case even though that means pissing off powerful mages, crossing leprechaun picket lines, and braving dinner with goblin parents.

This one was so much fun. Mages, goblins, leprechauns, and pixies, oh my! The beginning just sucked me in immediately. Such interesting characters that I wanted to know all about them. Love the mage pistol and well, heck, this was just a super imaginative story. I figured out where the pixie dust had come from long before it came out, but it was still a fun ride getting to the bottom of exactly why and how. Gunther’s goblin family were great fun. The pixies and leprechauns (esp. Carrot Beard) were hilarious. But most of all, I adored Gunther the transmogrified goblin and would love to read more about him and Keith’s relationship, how they came to be together and definitely more in depth sexy bits please.

Everyone’s Afraid of Clowns by Jordan Castillo Price – 3.75 stars
Psychic medium Victor Bayne can spot a ghost any day of the year, but Halloween holds some special surprises. Victor and Jacob are on their way to a Halloween party, when Victor remembers something from his past. His psych-groupie boyfriend Jacob coaxes him to the location of the old spirit sighting, but they can’t ghost hunt without enduring a cheesy “haunted house” that’s even more disturbing than they realize.

Within the bowls of an old theatre, the guys encounter far more than just a ghost clown needing to cross over. As always between these two, any excuse for a sexy encounter is taken and the heat level between them is as hot as ever.

Well-written with ghost exhibitionism, glitter and goo, painted pumpkins and lots of spooky imagery. I’ve always found clowns and fun houses to be extremely creepy, but I do love this series. Victor and Jake are so darn hot together—wherever they are.

The Thirteenth Hex by Jordan L. Hawk – 5 stars
Dominic Kopecky is a Metropolitan Witch Police fanboy who failed the magic aptitude tests when he was young. He’d dreamed of working at MWP with witches and their familiars who take the form of birds, toads, and cats. But his lack of magic led him to become the next best thing—a hexman who does the grunt work of using ink, paper and gemstones to create spells that witches later activate with their magic. But hexes were an exact science and a badly done one could turn very deadly when activated.

When the beautiful unbonded crow familiar, Rook, seeks Dominic’s help investigating murder by hex Dominic isn’t sure why. He’s not a witch, the case has already been closed, and someone seems willing to kill to keep it that way.

I loved this one right from the start. Well-written, well-paced, intriguing characters, and a very unusual world set up. I thought it was funny that the familiar was a crow and Dominic’s last name was KoPECKy. Made me laugh. As did some of lines like ‘keep your beak out of it’ and a bunch of others. A lovely sweet romance, some nice heat, and a fun story. Overall, it just hit all the right notes for me.

The Soldati Prince by Charlie Cochet – 5 stars
Riley Murrough is a barista cleaning up after a day’s work when he’s suddenly being chased by demons, and rescued by tigers, one of which transforms into a huge man covered in tribal tattoos. If that wasn’t bad enough, he’s told that he bears the mark of a shapeshifter and whisked off to a magical realm.

Well-written story told from both Riley’s and Khalon’s POV, this story started off a bit confusing for me but very soon that changed and it sucked me in. At first witty, snarky fun with some really interesting side characters, but then things begin to shift. Within a chapter, there was a sweet romance that made me swoon and events that had me in tears and I completely loved Khalon and Riley. I really want to read more about this world and especially about the side characters Toka and Rayner as well. Loved those guys, too. The way Khalon and Rayner (best friends) bickered rocked. And the ending line was perfect Riley!

This was my first read by this author and will definitely not be my last, I really enjoyed her writing style.

One Hex Too Many by Lou Harper – 4.25 stars
Veteran detective Mike Mulligan is an expert on violent occult crimes at the Extramundane Crimes Division. Most of his fellow officers consider him cursed because of how many partners he’s lost and refuse to partner with him. Detective Hugh Fox is a rookie, eager to partner up and prove himself. However, Mulligan is accustomed to flying solo and not used to trusting a partner with his life. Not helped when one of the first things out of Fox’s mouth is to point out to Mulligan that he’s not gay.

Communicating via the bathroom mirror. Rogue hacker wizards=wackers (love that). A flamboyant blond desk clerk who can change sex at will uses glamour and charm spells on everyone in the force regularly as exposure training. All that in the first few pages let know right away that this was going to be a fun ride.

The duo is assigned to track a killer using dark magic—an offense at the top of the list of Prohibited Practices. Despite having gotten off to a rough start, I liked how Mulligan treated Fox from the get go. He seemed such a natural at training for a guy who hadn’t wanted a partner. Considerate of not making him look bad by correcting in front of others even when he was a trainee for instance. Early on a semi-drunken kiss motivated by a big red bed after the two of them had sung some off-note Karaoke made things a bit awkward—and yeah, that’s the kind of fun that ensues. The pace of their relationship development is fairly slow, which I liked, but I wanted to see/feel more heat. I enjoyed this new to me author’s writing style, quick paced, witty and fun, but with close attention to details of world building as well as the mystery elements. I would love a story about Leslie.

Josh of the Damned vs. the Bathroom of Doom by Andrea Speed
It’s a boring night at the Quik-Mart for Josh and his friend Doug. Until a vampire with a grudge—and the most adorable backup ever—crashes the store. Can Josh survive the Bathroom of Doom?

A new to me author and I’m not familiar with this series, so right off that put me at a bit of a disadvantage going into this. Overall well-written story, but I was rather lost some of the time and for that reason, I am not going to assign this story an individual star rating. Honestly this story squicked me out, including how Josh described and thought about things—I’m pretty sure this had to do with my total lack of background reference on him to go on, but I have to be honest and say that Josh and Doug didn’t appeal to me. The Medusa bracelet was cool. I think fans of this series will enjoy this well-written quirky story. It just wasn’t for me.

The Trouble With Hexes by Astrid Amara – 5 stars
P.I. Tim Keller has a problem. And the only person who can solve it is his ex-boyfriend, Vincent, whose job as a hexbreaker was the reason they broke up. It’s hard admitting he was wrong, especially when coughing up organs. But there’s a missing person to find, a hexmaker to hunt down, and a romance to repair before Tim breathes his last.

Wow, this one grabbed me by the throat. With a death grip. Tim broke up with Vincent, a tattoo artist, six months ago because he didn’t believe in the mumbo jumbo he’d started working with in his spare time and couldn’t stomach the danger it put him in. Conversely, Vincent made more effort to hide what he was doing than to explain and show it to Tim right up until the blow up at the end.

A few months later, Tim began to sicken and when doctors found no cure he had to face the truth he’d sensed all along… he’d been hexed. He shows up on Vincent’s doorstep a mere shadow of the man he’d been, suddenly having no choice but to believe in what he’d scoffed at. But even if Vincent wants to help him, it turns out that breaking a withering hex is no easy matter.

The writing in this last and lengthiest story is excellent as is the pacing. The characters are well-drawn and sucked me right into their life and world. Plenty of heat, some “aww” moments, and some parts that made me teary. And even a sweet little dog. What more could I want? My favorite of this anthology—for me, an excellent example of saving the best for last.

Cover is both hot and intriguing, it also most definitely says paranormal to me and made me want to check this book out upon first sight.
