A VVivacious Release Day Review: Blood Drop (The Warlock Brothers of Havenbridge #5) by Jacob Z. Flores

Rating: 5 Stars out of 5

Aiden Teine hasn’t completed his transformation. Now, what does that mean, hell if I know or even if Aiden knows for that matter? But things are definitely happening in Havenbridge, as Aiden is assaulted by a coven (can we call them that) of vampyren, an oracle and a soulquake in that order, all telling him something but what exactly, is unknown. But in this world of unknown be ready to join Aiden and his family as they unravel the Prophecy of the Three.

Oh! God, hands down favourite book of the series yet. This was amazing. I have no idea but recently I have been having a string of super-duper luck when it comes to books. Everything that I have been reading has all been so good. I feel like Midas. Okay, now let’s get things back on track, this book is amazing.

I had no idea that this book would be from Aiden’s perspective, like none and I am glad I didn’t know because I am pretty sure that knowledge would have led to certain preconceived notions, none of which would have been true. Well my first notion would have been that this book isn’t from the perspective of a Blackmoor and Drake doesn’t count he has been in that family since we have known that family, but this would not only have not been from the perspective of Blackmoor but would have also been from the perspective of a vampire fae. And frankly, I don’t even know if I like Aiden but if I was ever in doubt about my feelings for Aiden, I ain’t in doubt anymore. I love Aiden.

God, this book was a rollercoaster of epic proportions and the reason I think this book worked so well was because it was from Aiden’s perspective and also because for a certain time of the book we are away from the Blackmoors (well, not true but you don’t know that yet or you do), so it was amazing getting the views of a creature as complex as Aiden, is and becoming, on the magical world and on the Blackmoors because can I just say that the time away from the Blackmoors really puts things in perspective and when we finally get back to them it is amazing to see them work together like amazing, that scene with them fighting Icarian, epic like I loved the fact that we got a third perspective on what was happening to truly appreciate the importance of that moment, epic.

The romance in the book does slow things down especially in the beginning, so that is a little annoying but when the ball gets rolling, it is amazing. There is so much happening in this one, so much being revealed and explored and ending and so much to celebrate, this one was epic and I really just can’t wait to see where this story goes next.

Cover Art by Paul Richmond. The cover features Aiden, now Aiden would be a hard character for anyone to depict what with him being a fae prince and a fire fairy and a vampyre and a… you will have to read the book to figure that one out but I think the cover does him justice.

By Jacob Z. Flores

Blurb:

Love and trust made them soul mates, but destiny might have other plans.
Ever since Drake Carpenter fell in love with warlock Mason Blackmoor, his life has been one supernatural battle after another, but Drake doesn’t mind… much. To be with Mason and experience the magi connection they share, Drake would face entire hordes of vampyren, shifters, or fae—and he has. Luckily Drake is immune to magic, though no one can explain his natural ability to negate almost any enchantment. With Drake’s own family gone, Mason is all he has. So why is Drake experiencing disturbing dreams about Mason that terrify him?
A new threat looms on the horizon, and a revelation about Drake’s identity and the true origin of his bond with Mason shatters everything Drake believes. If Drake, Mason, and all of magic are to survive the coming Spell Fall, the most destructive curse in sorcery, Drake must deal with the truth and fight his way back to Mason—because their enemies are gaining strength, and they intend to reach the boy Drake loves first.

About The Author
Jacob Z. Flores lives a double life. During the day, he is a respected college English professor and mid-level administrator. At night and during his summer vacation, he loosens the tie and tosses aside the trendy sports coat to write man on man fiction, where the hard ass assessor of freshmen level composition turns his attention to the firm posteriors and other rigid appendages of the characters in his fictional world.
 Summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, provide Jacob with inspiration for his fiction. The abundance of barely clothed man flesh and daily debauchery stimulates his personal muse.
 When he isn’t stroking the keyboard, Jacob spends time with his daughter. They both represent a bright blue blip in an otherwise predominantly red swath in south Texas.

spell-fall-by-jacob-z-floresAs the protector covens gear up to fight the latest threat to the Gate, the Blackmoors are receiving the silent treatment from the Conclave. In a bid to find answers they devise a strategy that completely backfires.

Meanwhile Drake is having nightmares where the villain is none other than Mason. As Drake works to find out the meaning behind his dreams, he is confronted with an age old truth about himself, his family and the spell bond he shares with Mason.

My Thoughts on Spell Fall

What I am coming to love about this series is the action scenes, the scenes where we get answers to a few questions only to be riddled with many new ones.

I love it when something is happening in this book, because it is awesome to see everyone work together to figure out how to defeat the big bad.

This book has a lot of my old favourites. This book is told from Drake’s perspective and it was so awesome being back in his and Mason’s life as they navigate the perils of their magical life. Especially Drake as he is faced with some pretty impossible situations in this book but it was also really nice to finally have some background on Drake and his life. Also, we finally find out about his immunity to magic.

My one problem with this book was that Drake’s immunity to magic isn’t consistent throughout the book while in the previous books Drake has been singularly immune to all types of magic, in this book we see him get transported by the Conclave, and his dreams infiltrated not only when he is sleeping but even when he is wide awake. This leaves me a little confused as to if magic can affect Drake in some small way if he is unaware or not expecting it or maybe not actively fighting and if yes then what are the limits to that influence. Also the amount of power needed to cast a spell on him isn’t consistent initially the Conclave can transport him and then Icarian can work dream magic on him and then he needs two crests to wrest control over Drake. It would be nice if we could for once and for all quantify Drake’s immunity in some relatable terms instead of having it vary constantly across the board.

I have always loved Mason and Drake, and it was nice getting another story focused on them but I, also kind of, missed being in Mason’s head. I really wish that in the subsequent books we can get at least one book told from his perspective and see his powers grow. Another thing I really want the answer to is – Who is the strongest Blackmoor brother? Just tell us already because I’m infinitely curious.

Also as usual I love the entire dysfunctional extended family. The scenes which have all the Proctors, the Stonewalls and the Blackmoors together are some of the most important scenes in this series and they are always so special. Personally when all the three families are fighting together, it is beyond epic. I also love their interactions with each other and how they help each other, especially the kids.

This book raises a lot more questions and I’m excited to see what happens in the next book and to know if any of my speculations come true.

Cover Art by Paul Richmond. I loved the cover. The guy on the cover is a take on Drake Carpenter and he shares a startling resemblance with the Drake in my head, so that was an added bonus.

A Lila Audiobook Review: Suddenly Yours by Jacob Z. Flores and John Solo (Narrator)

Standard

Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5

suddenly-yours-audiobookWhat happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas.

Cody Hayes is having one epic morning-after. The hangover following a Vegas bachelor party is nothing new to him, and neither is the naked man in his bed.

His apparent marriage is a different story.

Carefully plotting every detail of his life carried Julian Canales to a Senate seat as an openly gay man. A drunken night of Truth or Dare isn’t like him… and neither is marrying a man he just met. He’d get an annulment, but the media has gotten wind of his hasty nuptials. If Julian’s political career is going to survive, he has to stay married to a man who’s his opposite in every way.

Now he must convince Cody that all they need to do is survive a conservative political rival, a heartbroken ex, their painful pasts… and an attraction neither man can fight.

Suddenly Yours is a classic day after tale. Waking up married suited Cody, but challenged Julian’s well-planned life. At the same time, they balanced each other. Something that’s evident from the very beginning. The opening scene sets the stage for the rest of their relationship and gives the readers hope of a happily ever after.

This is when my problem with the story starts. I’m not a fan of stories that go back in time until they meet again later down the road. Prologues are fine as set ups, but having to wait to see how everything happens doesn’t work for me. My lack of patience makes me skim through the pages. I wanted to see their future together, not their past.

When we are finally back in real time, the story moves smoothly. I did enjoy Julian’s and Cody’s banter and easy friendship. I think they were right for each other. I like how Cody took charge and how Julian tries to do his best for his new husband.

The secondary characters fit the story line and added to the couple’s troubles. Their lack of trust in love feeds from them but in the end, they are surprised when the realization of their relationship catches up with them. There’s no one more clueless about their love than Cody and Julian.

John Solo is one of my favorite narrators and he didn’t disappoint. The mirth behind Cody’s words was evident and the rest of the voice transitions flow easily.

Another cover by Bree Archer. The model works perfectly for the story and the standard Dreamspun Desires background complemented the quirkiness of the book.

A Lila Audiobook Review: Undercover Boyfriend by Jacob Z. Flores and Rusty Topsfield (Narrator)

undercover-boyfriend-audiobookTwo men, one lie, and a whole bunch of trouble.

Marty Valdez is in serious trouble. His sister’s wedding is around the corner, and everyone expects to meet Marty’s super-successful underwear model boyfriend – whom Marty invented. Now Marty has to produce a half-naked hottie or suffer the worst humiliation of his life.

FBI agent Luke Myers is in serious trouble. He’s been working undercover to take down a dangerous drug cartel, but his cover’s blown and he needs to disappear. Luckily, a geeky yet intriguing comic book artist gives him the perfect opportunity. Luke just has to pretend to be his boyfriend, and pretending is what he does best. But between Marty’s mother and his ex, Luke might’ve bitten off more than he can chew, and Marty’s knack for finding trouble might ruin more than just his sister’s wedding.

Undercover Boyfriend is one of my favorites in the Dreamspun Desires series. The plot seems simple from the start, but the author did an excellent job adding to it as the story moved forward. It balances the romance and the mystery well even when the reader can guess who the antagonist is and what would happen next.

I love Marty and Luke, separately and as a couple. They’re easy characters to fall for. I kept wishing for everything to go right for them even when this series guarantees a HEA. They’re sweet and over-the-top, but it worked with the character and plot building in the story. It’s great to see how protective of Marty Luke is from the very beginning. And how much compassion Marty has for Luke when they first met.

As I mentioned, the mystery is as important as the romance. It brings to different characters together and continues to build up to the very end. The reader can connect the dots, but it doesn’t take from the story itself. The slow build goes beyond the main characters. It includes every scene in the story.

The secondary characters are as good as the principals and I hope we get to see some of the guys later in the series. Marty’s mom and sister were perfect. Everyone, even the villain, had a reason to take part of the story. There are a lot of coincidences to make the story shine, but in the end, we get another good book by this author.

I like Rusty Topsfield narration. It complimented the story’s soap opera feel. He did an excellent job emphasizing the characterization and making Marty and his family feel realistic.

The cover by Bree Archer matches the rest of the series and gives the reader a nice visual of Luke’s appearance. Adapted to audiobook format.

If you are having a bad day and seriously need a lighted hearted, quick fun read to make the blues fly out the window?  Here’s a story for you.  Suddenly Yours by Jacob Z. Flores takes that workhorse of a plot, the wake up married in Las Vegas, and makes it adorable and warmhearted all over again. Cody Hayes is taking part of a drunken bachelor party celebration when a dare brings Cody over to Senator Julian Canales, enjoying a night off. What happens next is the sort of thing that movies and Las Vegas is famous or should that be infamous for.

But now post marriage equality, these stories can take on an entirely new spin and really, that’s also the joy here.  There’s no hiding in the closet, no tragedy (yes, I know that still occurs) but now its equally possible for a happy ending, for people to blink and move on.  Sometimes, I think we forget that.  We get the absolutely adorable Cody with his buoyant personality, from his dress to his expressions.  On the other side, we get the very serious politician, Julian Canales, whose determination to be a Senator and deliver the type of agenda that will help people most perhaps cost him a personal life and more a deep romantic one.  Flores brings them together for one night of hazy, explosive sex and then more when reality sets in and they (and us) really get to know each other.  Its the days that follow that seems believable, funny, and real.

Its a format that works when done right as its done here.  The author’s execution carries us along quickly in the story, we connect to the characters and we root for their romance.  Yes, its light and warmhearted.  You know where the plots going but its ok, you like the couple and the secondary characters and the ride is immensely enjoyable.  All that adds up to a satisfying romance.

This is book two in Flores’ One Fine Day series.  I’ve loved them both.  Can’t wait to see what book three brings.  I  recommend them all.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is just as adorable and cuddly as the story.  I adored it.

Undercover Boyfriend by Jacob Z. Flores is a perfect example why I love this series.  It takes the Harlequin type plot and romance, gives it a M/M couple and then elevates it again with characters I adored, a plot that, while you couldn’t expect to take it seriously all the time, was just real enough to believe in, and a ending to keep you smiling hours after you put the book/Kindle/Nook down.

Another huge plus?  The author is making it into a series. Win win.

Like the blurb, you have to start the review with the characters and Marty Valdez.  Oh Marty.  Marty has spent his life running away from things by creating fake people to help him out of situations, from playdates in childhood he wanted to avoid to his sister’s wedding now that he has to attend with a boyfriend he’s made up.  Fake friends have always worked before but now he has to produce.  In other  hands, Marty would come off perhaps unlikable, sad even but in Jacob Z. Flores’s characterization, you get Marty.  You understand him, and he’s so darn cute and funny and easy to love….well, you’re on his side immediately.  And you just know he’s the type to fall into the trouble walking around the corner.

That’s Luke Myers, the FBI agent deep undercover.  Luke is a character that Flores uses to play off Marty to perfection and I liked the way he comes alive within the Valdez household.  We get a 2 person pov  here, one being Luke’s and that works well for both furthering our connection to the characters and moving the storyline along quickly.

Yes, back to the plot.  The drug cartel.  That’s never forgotten, as it could have been here.  It slithers along, like a deadly little threat to their growing romance, poking up here and there to remind us of its presence.  Loved that effect and its smash bang blowup was thrilling. *fans*

So, this book has it all for me.  A great couple, wonderful romance, and a thriller to boot.  And we are getting a new series out of it too.  I can’t wait for the next book to be released.  Want a new romance?  Need a new couple to root for and fall in love with?  Pick up Undercover Boyfriend by Jacob Z. Flores.  I highly recommend it.  Then join me in waiting for the next story in the series.

Cover art by Paul Richmond is great.  I can see that being Luke Myers.

A Barb the Zany Old Lady Audiobook Review: Being True by Jacob Z. Flores and Mark Westfield (Narrator)

Standard

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

Being True audiobookWhat a delightful story, well-written and refreshingly narrated by Mark Westfield. Frankly, I wasn’t sure if I’d like a young adult story, or if I’d like this narrator, since it’s my first for him, but what a knockout combo Jacob and Mark turned out to be!

Truman Cobbler has had to transfer high schools yet again in his senior year. The victim of bullying in every school he’s attended, he lives with his widowed mother who is more than willing to move to accommodate her son’s safety. Tru is short of stature with hair that has an unfortunate tendency to misbehave, ears that stick out, and teeth self-described as horse teeth. He’s also very smart and apparently exudes a gay vibe. Not that it’s untrue, as he is gay, but it seems he has some magnetic field that attracts jocks and trouble—usually together.

There is one jock, however, who is not like the others. Javier Castillo is popular and friendly and the star pitcher for the baseball team, and for some reason, he befriends Tru from the moment they meet. Tru certainly needs befriending. Other than Javi, his only friend is Claudia, the classmate who is head of the yearbook and the high school newsletter committees. Since Tru loves writing and photography, and Claudia does not follow the popular kids in bullying Tru, their friendship seems made in heaven.

When it becomes known that Javi has befriended Tru, many of the “in crowd” decide to befriend Tru as well, at least on the surface. But later in the year, when one of the jocks picks on Tru and Javi comes to defend him, Javi is given an ultimatum—Tru or the friendship of the jocks. By this time, Javi has realized his feelings for Tru are more than friendship, and the two decide to reveal their relationship to both sets of parents and then come out at school.

I love the way the author handled this situation—the strength and character of their parents was remarkable, and the boys’ reaction, though not happy, was honest obedience to the principles their parents set out. It was refreshing to see authority figures act with integrity—from parents to school administrators.

Javi and Tru face both expected and unexpected hurdles, and just as their friendship grew at first, their love for each other grows after they know each other better. Tru becomes much tougher and more confident as he faces life challenges and tragedy with determination and a strength of character quite amazing for a young man.

Oh, and did I mention sex? No? Well, once the boys are eighteen, they get their chance to explore and the combination of Jacob Flores’s writing and Mark Westfield’s narration makes for some smoking hot moments.

I recommend this one to all lovers of young adult/new adult MM romance. And the audio version is outstanding, so if you haven’t tried an audiobook, this one would be a great place to start.

~~~~~
Cover by Paul Richmond depicts a close-up of both young men lying side by side with a view of Javi snuggling Tru over his shoulder. Very sweet, just like the story.
Barb, A Zany Old Lady Review: Spell Bound (The Warlock Brothers of Havenbridge #1) by Jacob Z. Flores
Standard
Rating: 3 stars out of 5
Spell Bound coverMason Blackmoor just can’t compete with his brothers, much less his father. They represent the epitome of black magic, strong, dark, and wicked, and though Mason tries to live up to his respected lineage, most of the spells he casts go awry. To make matters worse, his active power has yet to kick in. While his brothers wield lightning and harness the cold, Mason sits on the sidelines, waiting for the moment when he can finally enter the magical game.
When a dead body is discovered on the football field of his high school, Mason meets Drake Carpenter, the new kid in town. Drake’s confident demeanor and quick wit rub Mason the wrong way. Drake is far too self-assured for someone without an ounce of magical blood in his body, and Mason aims to teach him a lesson—like turn him into a roach. And if he’s lucky, maybe this time Mason won’t be the one turned into an insect.
Not surprisingly, the dislike is mutual, and Drake does nothing to dispel Mason’s suspicion that the sexy boy with a southern drawl is somehow connected to the murder.
If only Mason didn’t find himself inexplicably spellbound whenever they are together, they might actually find out what danger hides in the shadows.
This was a very nice start to a new young adult series by Jacob Flores. It’s a world where wizards, warlocks, and witches work together to keep peace among their covens and keep humans from finding out about them.
Eighteen-year-old Mason Blackmoor just can’t get the hang of his magic. Youngest son of the leader of the Blackmoor warlock coven, he’s yet to come into his powers, and because of that, he bears the brunt of his brothers’ humor and scorn. His family has traditionally been very strong in black magic, and his brothers’ abilities to manipulate the elements to work with lightning and icy cold, as well as his father’s ability to work with earth and stone, leave him feeling very inadequate when he can’t even summon a simple spell.
But once Mason meets the new kid at school, Drake Carpenter, things seem to change for the better. In fact, one of his first magic spells occurs when he saves Drake’s life at a construction site. It takes Drake a while to come around to accepting, and then liking Mason, however. Drake is living with his aunt due to the recent deaths of his parents, and although he’s usually cocky and confident, he’s also sad and emotional when he’s reminded of his loss. The more time Mason spends with him, the more he wants to help Drake and the more he falls in love with the young man who just might be his soulmate—spellbound with him for life.
Mason assumes that Drake is a shifter due to his crazy fast ability to run and jump and never seem to be stopped by objects that would definitely stop most humans. Plus, there was a time when Drake seemed to disappear, and the next time Mason looked, there was a cat in the exact place where he last saw Drake. Complicating their budding relationship, however, is a dark magical presence in town. It may be a shadow weaver or something worse, and when murders start to pile up around them, and tragedy strikes again in Drake’s life, Mason vows to keep him safe at all costs.
There’s plenty of excitement in this story as the author builds a world in which those who practice magic are hidden from humans but definitely walk among us. The romance between the young men is sweet but there are also a few explicit sex scenes, so this is not totally vanilla. I enjoyed living in this world for a few days and getting to know the main and secondary characters. I suspect that there may be romance in Mason’s brothers’ future while they are all fighting the being from the dark side who is disrupting the peace and has vowed to capture Mason for a yet to be revealed reason.
This book can certainly be read as a standalone, but there is more to come, and if you get hooked on this one, you won’t want to stop with just one. I recommend this story to those who enjoy the world of magic, young adult fiction, and a sweet romance mixed with their murder and mayhem.
~~~~~
Cover art is a portrait of Mason as drawn by the very talented Paul Richmond. It’s a beautiful depiction with just a hint of darkness to symbolize Mason’s dark magic.
