A Paul B Review: Credo (Demon Elite 8) by April Kelley

credo-demon-elite-8-by-april-kelleyIn most action romance series that I have read, there comes a time when the action gets put on the back burner and the romance comes to the forefront.  For the Demon Elite series, Credo is that book.

The book starts toward the end of the events in Max but told from Twiggy’s point of view.  Starting with Twiggy calling Sydney for help, the first part of the book describes his journey from being captured by Victoria Mize’s men to his rescue by the Demon Elite squad.  He is passed over to Credo, who promises Twiggy not only to protect him, but help in kicking his drug habit. Too bad the man only wants him for information that he does not have.

Credo, Creed to his gringo friends, is determined to keep Twiggy, who is now using his given name of Morgen, safe.  He has been trying to keep his family safe since his mother was in an accident over twenty years ago.  Joining a gang and then a mercenary squad to provide money for his family, he has finally found a home in Demon Elite.  He is starting to get feelings for Morgen but has trouble expressing his feelings.  He needs to get across to Morgen that while he has to attend to family matters, he is not abandoning him.  He also must stress that he will be there for Morgen even if he cannot provide the information that they think he has.  Going so far as to keep themselves invisible from not only Mize’s operation but his own squad should prove that he thinks. 

I liked that his was slow moving romance with the action taking a break for the most part.  All the real action takes place in what is the retelling of the ending of Max in Morgen’s viewpoint.  Unlike most of the other books, this one has several gaps in time between some chapters.   So this is not a face paced romance that some of the others have been.  Morgen is an addict and is learning how to stay sober.  He has issues trusting people as his only real friend has been Sydney.  He starts out thinking that Creed is only interested in protecting him for the trial that will be coming up.  Creed must show Morgen that he thinks of him more than just a protectee while dealing with his family issues.  He has been protecting those people closest to him all his life.  He must learn to take a step back before he loses all that he loves.

The cover by Latrisha Waters is another winner.  A shirtless Credo stands in front of a red background with the Demon Elite crest in the corner again.  The only minor quibble is that the man is not quite as tattooed as his description.

A Paul B Review: For a Dragon’s Control (Highland Dragons #10) by Charlie Richards

for-a-dragons-controlRyder MacGree has missed his brother Ian since he left the village.  Ian was supposed to marry the daughter of a rival clan’s chief.  This started a string of people disappearing from his village who were never seen again.  Having learned that Ian went to the Kartelle Valley has driven their father Chief Goth into madness.  No matter how many men the Chief sends, they never return.  Ryder wants to end this pointless one-sided war but is not sure how to do this.

Returning home one day, Ryder finds Ian’s best friend Ewan in his home.  Ewan tells Ryder that Ian is nearby and will take him to see Ian.  With Ian and Ewan is Elder Combs.  Combs proposes a solution to Ryder’s problem as suggested by Ian.  As Ryder has reached his majority, if he should take a consort then Goth must step aside and Ryder would become Chief.  And seeing as Ryder is Ian’s brother and probably an asda (a human who can bond with a dragon), Combs brings three prospective consorts with him.  Ryder must choose between Eustize the male herald, Ryantra the female warrior or Tygo the male healer.

Tygo is the best healer in the Karstelle Valley.  Despite his young age, he desperately wants to claim an asda as his own.  When he hears of the trip to Clan MacGree’s village, he goes along.  He is taken by the beauty of the clan’s countryside and interested in the plants that he has never seen before.  But that is second to the beauty he sees in Ryder.  While Tygo knows that Clan MacGree has not had same sex consorts as Karstelle Valley does and he will probably lose to the female dragon warrior, he hopes he can win the heart of the future chief.

This is the tenth and final book in Charlie Richard’s Highland Dragon series.  I have enjoyed this trip to medieval Scotland.  What started out as a son’s refusal to marry a woman he not only does not love but could not “lie down” with as he prefers the company of males ends with a satisfactory resolution to the obvious one sided war started by his father.  The dragons of the Karstelle Valley would just want to be left in peace and in the end they will get their wish. 

As for this book, Ryder must decide between the easy choice of selecting Ryantra (and probably ensuring a successor) or the difficult choice of Tygo whom he seems to have a connection to but is of the same sex and may not be accepted by his clan.  He must also ensure that they all live until the bonding as his father is out to stop this arrangement before it can be completed.  As the two cultures are different, how Ryder must prove a bonding goes directly against the possessive nature of dragons and he must find a solution to that as well. 

Once again the cover by Angela Waters is simply stunning.  Tygo’s yellow dragon is seen flying behind a kilt wearing Ryder.  Ms Waters has never failed to deliver the perfect cover for any of the ten books in this series.  I must complement her on the work she has done.

For a Dragon's Enthusiasm (Highland Dragons #9) by Charlie RichardsDoughall Maxton is a warrior for Clan MacDuffan.  His brother Seumas left town with Kaiser, the representative from the Karstelle Valley.  Unfortunately, Hamish and a couple of his friends followed after Seumas intent on harming Doughall’s brother.  Using his tracking skills, Doughall finally gets to where he seems to be only a day behind those he is looking for.  When he sees what looks like a funeral pyre, he fears the worst for his brother.  He hears a noise and notices a large blue lizard like creature watching him.  Not wanting to be an easy meal for the beast, he pulls out his sword and attacks.

Simeon knows he is not allowed to leave Kartelle Valley.  The fewer dragons that have interactions with the human world, the more likely their existence will be kept secret.  But loneliness has set in ever since more dragons have found their asdas, or human mates.  While out, Simeon spots this well-muscled man with long flowing hair.  Simeon recognizes the man as an asda and is determined to make him his mate.  Simeon easily defends himself from Doughall’s attack and immobilizes the man until he can explain the ways of the dragon world.  While getting to know each other, Kaiser and Seumas show up.  Simeon knows that he knows he faces possible punishment for leaving the valley.  However, will information that Doughall has focus attention on that instead of Simeon’s transgression?

I have watched soap operas off and on for the past thirty years.  Every once in a while, you get a show which recaps the key story lines, plants a new piece of information that will be key later in the series, and basically waits until the next day to get back into full story telling mode.  For a Dragon’s Enthusiasm, the ninth book in Charlie Richard’s Highland Dragons series, fells just like that.  I have enjoyed this series from the start so a breather in the action does not bother me.  It looks like Ian’s father is still intent on bringing his son home.  And as with most book series, having read the previous books will help with understanding the events in this book.

What can I say about the cover from Angela Waters?  It is yet another stunning cover that is on par with her previous covers for this series.  Doughall is portrayed exactly as described in the book, with Simeon’s blue dragon in the background.

A Paul B Review: Ashley (Demon Elite 5) by April Kelley

AshleyAshley Wilkins is an asshole and he knows it.  He is the Demon Elite’s interrogator and he’s damn good at his job.  However, Ash has used methods in the past which would not pass muster with the Geneva Convention.  And Ash feels guilty about this.  When a video of teammate Raven’s kidnapped brother Iain shows up, Ash cannot help but feel for the young man being tortured by the underlings of Victoria Mize.  The fact that Iain is cute as hell makes him want to take action.  While viewing the video, Ash finds a key clue as to the location where Iain is being held.  Justin assigns his interrogator to go out in the field and help with the rescue effort.

Iain Liron knows his brother has worked for a government agency.  Having just come out of rehab, Iain loves his job at a local coffee shop.  One day, his brother’s boss kidnaps him to use as leverage against his brother to make him do her dirty work.  He is hanging around in the literal sense with his arms tied above him hooked on a meat rack.  The beating he received is meant to serve as a message to the Demon Elite squad but Iain is not sure if his brother’s team will be able to rescue him in time to save his life.  When help does arrive, his rescuer is the most gorgeous man he has seen.

While clearly attracted to Iain, Ash believes that he is not good enough for him.  His life as an interrogator means he has done thing as bad as or worse than what was done to Iain while he was being held.  He feels that Iain could not possibly feel anything but contempt once he knows the full extent of what he has done.  Iain meanwhile tells Ash that everybody has something in their past.  Iain is a recovering addict and has learned to take things one day at a time.  Throw in Iain’s overly protective brother Raven and this relationship definitely has its problems at the beginning.  When the threat to the Demon Elite’s partners comes to their lakeside safe house, the men must mobilize to neutralize the situation before one of their loves pays the price.

This fifth book in the Demon Elite series once again goes to the theme of redemption for both the team member and the rescued love.  Both men know they are imperfect men and each tries to cope with it in their own ways.  Ash will do some sort of good deed without his team’s knowledge.  Iain just wants to get his life back on track after getting involved with drugs.  By the end of the book, Ash realizes that Iain means that he does not care what he does for a living and begin to move forward with their relationship.  I cannot wait for the next book.

The cover art by Latrisha Waters follows the pattern of the series.  Ashley is on the cover, shirtless, with the Demon Elite crest in the corner.  The model looks like what I would think Ashely the “farm boy” would look like.

Demon Elite is not a Paranormal Romance series

That’s right. The Demon Elite series doesn’t have one shred of a paranormal element in it. Don’t get me wrong. I love paranormal romance. It’s my favorite sub-genre as a matter of fact. It’s just that Demon Elite is not in that category, even though it sounds like it might fit in there.

The only way it does is that the main characters fight like Demons. You see, Demon Elite is a team of assassins. Mostly, they take out the criminals in the sex trafficking industry. They all feel very strongly about what they do and the goal they’d like to achieve, which is to stop sex slavery and trafficking completely. They used to work for a secret government agency, but had to leave when they learned their leader was also selling human beings to the highest bidder. Now they are independent contractors on a mission to stop they’re ex-boss.

The Demon Elite team works very closely with the Newell Brothers. If you’ve read Lakehouse Security, then you’ll recognize that last name from those books. Both teams are currently living and working in the lakehouse mansion so the Lakehouse Security boys visit the Demon Elite stories from time to time.

While I was writing Locke’s Love (Lakehouse Security #4), I needed a name for Locke’s team. My son, who loves video games (he’s a teenager) said something about a person having DeMon13 as a gamer tag in some shoot’em up video game. So that had to creative juices flowing long enough for me to come up with the rest on my own.

Thank you DeMon13, whoever you are.

So, yes it’s a contemporary romance series about a group of assassins. For those that love paranormal, though, I get it completely. I love shifters and vampires as much as you do. I even have a paranormal series available. It’s sold everywhere books are. But I just have one question: have you tried an assassin?

A Paul B Review: Tanner and Shade (Demon Elite 4) by April Kelley

Tanner and ShadeFinn O’Reilly has be staying at the Lakeshore safe house since his rescue from slave traffickers a couple of months ago.  He had started flirting with Shade upon his arrival.  Things seemed to be going along real well with him until Finn finds out that Shade has been dating Tanner for the past two years.  Seeing that his relationship with a married man had gotten him into the situation he is currently in, Finn wants no part of breaking up a happy home.  He will do what he has must to prevent getting involved with another married man.

Tanner and Shade have kept their relationship a secret from their bosses for the past couple of years.  While at the Agency, there was a no fraternization policy in place.  Now that the Demon Elite squad has gone private, the two have no idea what their boss Justin would think about the relationship.  Both men find Finn attractive and openly flirt with him.  Shade does the more open flirting while Tanner is there for cuddles during movie night and the like. 

As Finn continues to resist both men, they decide to try to get Finn to join their relationship.  Before they can discuss the matter with him, Finn decides the best course of action is to run away from the situation, knowing it would hurt both the men and his brother.  While he is leaving town, Finn is stopped by one of the crooked cops working for Victoria Mize and his ex-boyfriend Harrison Belani.  Tanner and Shade must rescue their wayward witness before his is returned to where this whole mess started, back to Harrison.

This fourth book in the Demon Elite series is a tale of three broken men who will form a relationship to help each other heal and grown.  Finn is driven by the bad relationship that leads to his being sold into sexual slavery.  Tanner still suffers from physical and psychological effects of being tortured during a mission gone wrong.  Shade has blamed himself for not being there when his family died when he was a teen.  Add in the fact that Finn blames himself for his mother’s murder and you can see why they need each other to heal.  I have a feeling there will be some bumpy times ahead for the group but will make it through. 

This book also expands on how rotten a person Victoria Mize really is.  First she him up her brother as a fall guy for an attempted kidnapping.  Then she sells her own brother to the slave trafficking business.  Here is hoping that she gets put out of business soon.

The cover art by Latrisha Waters follows the pattern of the other Demon Elite.  Shade and Tanner are shown with shirts open showing their chiseled physique.  The Demon Elite shield is in the upper right hand corner this time.

A Paul B Review: Cosmo (Demon Elite 3) by April Kelley

CosmoCosmo Ruckman is the youngest member of the Demon Elite squad.  He takes on a sense of pride that he is using his skills in breaking and entering for the good guys now.   But his criminal past has been keeping him from the one thing he desires, Agency intelligence chief Derek Kyle.  Since the Demon Elite squad has broken away from the Agency, he no longer has to withstand the looks of contempt from Derek that a criminal is actually working for the government.  Much to his chagrin, Cosmo receives his next assignment—breaking into Derek’s house and office to prove or disprove that he is working with their ex-boss, Victoria Mize, in her sex trafficking ring.

Derek Kyle knows his boss is crooked, but he just can’t prove it.  To complicate matters, members of his team are missing in action.  He wonders how Justin goes about making leading the Demon Elite squad so easy.  Derek feels that it is the sense of family that the squad enjoys.  One night, he is alerted that his office computer is being accessed.  He goes to check out the situation and finds the cute break in artiest from Demon Elite Cosmo is the culprit.  Faced with a decision of what to do with the man, he decides to join Cosmo in breaking into his boss’s house whether Cosmo likes it or not. 

With the information they find, the two groups decide to rescue the brother of one of Derek’s team.  He is being held by Mize to blackmail Raven into working for her.  Disappointed that Raven didn’t come to him, Derek decides that while he is good at investigations, he sucks at leadership.  While waiting for backup to raid the warehouse where they suspect Raven’s brother is being held, they hear a scream, prompting them to move in before they are ready.  Entering the building, they quickly realize that they are outgunned.  They will have to survive until reinforcements arrive.  But will they live that long?

This is the third book in the Demon Elite series.  I find myself engulfed in this series.  While I can follow most of the action, there are pieces that I am missing as this is a spin-off from another series by the author.  However, I feel I l know most of the characters anyway.  The miscommunication between Cosmo and Derek leads Cosmo to think Derek couldn’t possibly be interested.  Derek meanwhile would never have gone after Cosmo while they were working at the Agency even without his shady past.  Only when Germ gives Derek the information about Cosmo’s life does he realize that he might be misjudging the man.  As some have said, is it wrong to steal if you need to do so to survive?  Put into context, Derek sees the hell that Cosmo’s life was before joining the team.  Germ, as usual, provides no brain to mouth filter and provides comic relief.  I hope he finds his love soon.  I also liked how the author changed things up in that Cosmo is matched up with another member of law enforcement and not a victim that he is rescuing, like the plot of the previous two books. 

The cover by Latrisha Waters has our young Cosmo in a model like pose with a jacket and scarf.  The Demon Elite symbol is positioned in the upper right hand corner again.

A Paul B Review: Wolf (Demon Elite 2) by April Kelley

Wolf Demon EliteLiam O’Reilly has not heard from his brother Finn for a week.  This is unusual because the brothers do not go more than two days without speaking.  Fearing something is wrong, he confronts his mother and step-father Richard.  Liam never liked his step-father and dislikes his mother for putting up with his abuse of the family.  While talking with his parents, Liam learns that Richard has sent Finn to a gay conversion camp.  After threatening to call the police, Liam receives a video saying to go to a meeting if he wants to see his brother again.  The crap hits the fan at this meeting and results with Liam being arrested with no hope of release from the crooked cops that took him in.

Spenser Ross, known to everyone as Wolf, is an elite assassin for the team.  He has developed a soft spot for Finn O’Reilly after his team rescued him from sex traffickers.  He assures Finn that they are doing what they can to find Liam, whom no one has heard from since his encounter with Crash a month ago.  Following up on a lead, he finds he is a moment too late to rescues Liam from jail, but follows those who have come to move him.  He arrives at a warehouse being used by the sex traffickers.  When he saves Liam from being turned over to the man who had originally paid for Finn, he finds that Liam is just as feisty as Finn had described him.  The Irish red headed firecracker (Liam insists it is strawberry blond) at first resists going with his would be rescuer.  After all, he’s been screwed over by authority figures for the past month.  Only after being convinced that he helped rescue Finn and that Finn is safe does Liam begin to trust his hero.  Now all they have to do is get back to company headquarters with a department full of crooked cops along with Wolf’s ex-boss on their tail.

I found this second book in the Demon Elite series enjoyable.  It starts during the events of the first book Crash and explains how Liam got tied up in all this mess in the first place.  As with the first book, the attraction between protector and protected is almost instant.  However, the most important thing I am finding in this series is the sense of family that the team has.   Having Liam and Wolf hook up reinforces this with their relationship to Finn.  Wolf also has a brotherly relationship with the team’s young tech geek Germ.  It is Clair, the fifteen year old girl rescued along with Finn that really brings this point home.  She becomes Wolf’s foster daughter and the team’s little sister/niece.  It will be interesting to see how much further this family grows. 

The cover art by Latrisha Waters depicts Wolf as I would figure him to be.  The cover shows a long haired Native American male in a white tee shirt with a leather jacket over it.  In the corner is the Demon Elite crest, which is tattooed on each member of the team.

A Paul B Review: Crash (Demon Elite 1) by April Kelley

CrashElijah Spade’s life got complicated after his mother’s death.  Having had virtually no contact with his mother’s relatives due to their criminal activities, Elijah is now caught up unwillingly in their plans.  Forced to help kidnap another gay man at a club, Elijah decides that is one man is going to die do to his actions, it should be him for helping out his relatives.  However, the attempted escape fails and Elijah and the victim are both captured.  Not knowing what happened to the mark, Elijah is thrown into the family dungeon where he lingers for weeks on end.  Hope comes when a fellow prisoner escapes and sends in help to rescue Elijah.

Crash Morgan is an assassin for the Demon Elite team.  His job is to kill the worst of the worst in society.  Those who die by his hand need to die.  So when his boss tell him that his next assignment is to watch and question a young man who is in the hospital, Crash initially objects.  When goes to the hospital room to watch over Elijah, Crash feels instantly protective of him.  Crash realizes that the man in the hospital bed may have to go to jail so any feelings are inappropriate.  Besides, it is against company policy.  As Crash gets to hear Elijah’s story, he cannot help but feel sorry for the guy.  His feelings for him start to grow also.  So when a pair of dirty cops sent by Elijah’s family show up, Crash takes matters into his own hands and escapes the hospital with Elijah.  Now can he keep them both alive to see if what both men are beginning to feel will grow?

This is the first book in the Demon Elite series by April Kelley.  The story revolves around an elite squad of men who contract out their services to right injustices in the world.  I thought her portrayal of what would be symptoms of PTSD in Elijah was well written.  Elijah’s anxiety attacks and his fear of Crash leaving him were realistic given the circumstances of his imprisonment.  Crash’s mother, who seems to act as a mother to the team, immediately bonds with Elijah after she learns what has happened to him.  The author also sets up future books with a twist that puts the integrity of the Demon Elite team in question.   It will be interesting to see how Crash and company takes on “the big bad.”

Delivered To HopeMorris is a rent boy for the Critters on Call escort service.  He has been working for the past six years after running away from home.  His one regret is leaving behind his brother Jeremy, who was put into a catatonic state after a beating from their father.   He has been saving money for the past few years in order to get his brother away from his controlling uncle, who is currently responsible for his brother’s well-being.  After finishing a job in Paris, a limo carrying his Uncle Ben pulls up.  His uncle informs him that is to be a mate to a shifter in the state of Washington in the United States.  The uncle threatens to move his brother to a lesser care facility where Morris knows his brother will die.  Morris agrees to the mating if he is given control of his brother’s affairs.  The uncle agrees on the condition that the mating lasts at least a month.

Harrison is an elk shifter that has been around the block a few times.  He’s had a series of one night stands at the bars but has been saving his “virginity” for his mate.  Though he knows that this loose definition is really a lie, he hopes that his future mate will accept him as he is.  He meets his mate at what is to be their future home.  He follows the blond haired young man to a pond on the property and they introduce themselves in a carnal way before the official meeting.  Relieved that his mate will not hold his not being a virgin against him, he tries to make things work with Morris.  However, Morris’s past catches up with him when they go out to the club one night.  He yells at Morris and raises a hand to him.  Morris flees and is not home when Harrison arrives.  Will he make things right with his new mate?  Did Morris just doom Jeremy in the process?

The characters in this third book in the Signed Sealed Delivered series started out kind of flat but by the end of the book seemed to round out a bit.  In the beginning it is mentioned that Morris left his brother behind.  It is not until later in the book we learn that he has been going to see his brother on the sly whenever he can.  Morris schemes to get out of his mating after the mandatory thirty days his uncle demanded.  He realizes that even after a short time he cares about Harrison.  Morris does what he can for his brother and that is his primary motivation for everything he does.  The ending of the book is a bit contrived and makes Uncle Ben even more of a villain.  The characters from the previous book provide a good support system for Harrison.   

Latrisha Water’s cover is reflective of the others in the series.  It has a picture of Morris in both his human and elephant forms on a yellow background.  It is a decent cover for the book.
