Sometimes all it takes is a glance

Blurb

Sometimes all it takes is a glance

One brief moment in time, seemingly insignificant but ultimately life changing

That glimpse through the storm, that shadow, that silhouette, of something you can’t help but feel is something… more, something bigger than just you.

For Deputy US Marshal Vaughn Kepler – a man beaten down by both time and his own demons – it’s a smirk in the mirror, eyes that dance and a mouth that both infuriates and turns him the f*&k on.  A mouth belonging to one Caysun Rourke.

The problem?  Caysun is supposed to be his witness, the person who will lead Vaughn to his missing brother.

He’s not supposed to be the man that Vaughn desperately wants warming his bed.

But he is.

What the hell is Vaughn supposed to do with that?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For Sylas Thorne, that one glance was in the rearview mirror of his car.
When he caught sight of the sexiest man he’d ever seen.
A man who gave ‘objects in the mirror are larger than they appear’ an entirely new meaning.
But Sylas didn’t do… people.
His severe anxiety had kept him hidden away from the world for as long as he could remember.
He was the man, the voice, behind the computer screen.  Anonymous.
Just the way he liked it.
Or he did, anyways.
How could he ever hope to gain the love of anyone, let alone the handsome man staring at him with the gorgeous light green eyes?
Yet with just a glance, this man made Sylas want to be a man worthy of one Grainger Peele.
He wanted to face his fears and say ‘eff you’ to them.
But it wasn’t like he could snap his fingers and make his crippling anxiety disappear.  If he could, he would’ve done that years ago.
Now the only question that remained was: Could a man like Grainger ever love such mess like him?
When conditions are fierce, when you can barely see your hand in front of your face – is that one glimpse, that fleeting glance, enough to carry you through the storm to the end?
This is the 10th installment in the world of the Black Ops Heroes – strong yet vulnerable men who are stubborn and loyal, caring and fierce, and who, when they love, they love with their whole damn hearts.
While this book is a standalone, it is recommended that you read the other books in the series to meet and fall in love with all of the men in this amazing world.
Excerpt
Sylas’s fingers shook as he brought his hands up to grip the top of his steering wheel.  He was trying to stop himself from restarting his car, backing out of the parking space and going home.
Home was safe.
Home was dark.
Home was… lonely.
That’s why he was here, right?
He’d been seeing Cece for eight months now.  At first, she’d come to his place, then they started doing Skype sessions as she tried to convince him to venture to her office for their chats, as she called them.
Today was the first time in almost a year that he’d actually left the house.
Panic had his forehead sweating, his pulse pounding.  His head started to shake side to side, “Nope. Can’t do it,” he mumbled.
He shifted in his seat to turn the key in the ignition when something in his rearview mirror caught his eye.  Something big, like fucking huge. He had no clue what the face looked like that was attached to the body walking towards his car but, at the moment he really didn’t care.
“Damn,” he mumbled as he watched that deep blue pinstripe suit sauntering closer.  The suit jacket was unbuttoned, giving Sylas teasing glimpses of the firm torso barely hidden beneath the white button-up shirt.  The thighs bulged with every step the man took. Those thick legs were spread slightly and as Sylas’ eyes dropped a bit, he could see why.
“Holy fuck,” he whispered as he saw the outline of a thick, long cock bouncing from side to side on the man’s left thigh, like the arm of a metronome.  No wonder the guy had to spread his legs. And he was commando. Damn. If his cock was that big it probably meant he had some big, ripe juicy balls that he was forced to make room for too.
Suddenly being out in public didn’t seem so bad.
The man stopped next to Sylas’ car, with that bulge perfectly framed in Sylas’ mirror.
As Sylas touched the button to lower his window, his brain to mouth filter disappeared.  “I know it says objects in mirror are larger than they appear but damn, dude,” he said.
The man chuckled, a deep, sexy sound that flowed over Sylas like liquid chocolate.  “You here to see Dr. Peele?”
“I think so?” he mumbled, his nerves re-appearing despite the hunk of man standing next to him.
The man pulled a phone out of his pocket and brought it to his ear, “Hey, Brenda.  Are there any patients in the waiting room? No? Good. Tell Cece her next appointment will be up shortly.”
The man returned his phone to his pocket.
“The only thing standing between you and her is that door and a receptionist,” the man said.
Sylas stared at the office door.
Could he do this?
“I promise things will feel better, Quattro.”
Sylas frowned, “Quattro?”
“Don’t know your name so I went with the car you’re in.”
Sylas smirked as he glanced into his rearview mirror again to see the sleek, black, powerful car parked behind him that blue suit had emerged from.  “Well, to be honest, there are three things standing in my way.”
“Three?”
“Yep.  That door, a receptionist,” he said as he pointed his finger over his steering wheel, “And your ginormous package, Mustang.”
The guy snorted a laugh that Sylas found completely adorable…and hot as fuck.  Mustang took a step back so Sylas could open his door – which he did, surprising even himself.
He stood to his feet turned around and dragged his eyes slowly up blue suit guy’s body until, yep, that was a gasp, because staring back at him with a grin on his face, with perfect white teeth, and dark, sexy stubble covering his chin and perfect jaw, high cheekbones with lickable dimples, strong eyebrows and light green eyes that were full of mischief and… understanding – was easily the most beautiful man that Sylas Thorne had ever seen.
A Lila Review: His Hart’s Command -Nothing Special VI (SWAT Edition) by AE Via
Standard
Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Lennox Freeman (Free) is one of the best hackers in the world which has caused him to spend most of his life on the run. Never able to put down roots, he couldn’t trust anyone not to take advantage of him, even his own family. If it wasn’t for his best friend, Tech, shielding him, Free’s father would’ve sold him and his skills to the highest bidding crime family when he was still a student at MIT. Free owed Tech his life; so when his friend called for him to come to Atlanta to work with him, he couldn’t say no. However, he wasn’t expecting the overprotective group of detectives that made up Atlanta PD’s most notorious task force. And he certainly wasn’t prepared for the large-and-in-charge SWAT Captain that was responsible for their safety.
Ivan Hart has lived and bled one creed all of his life: To Serve and Protect. His intense focus and determination in law enforcement has led him to finally commanding his own team. He’d worked hard to put together a squad of badasses capable of backing up a very dangerous team of detectives. Being God and Day’s last line of defense came with a lot of responsibility that he took very seriously.
After his divorce was final Hart turned right around and remarried his job. He had his good friends there in the office with him every day, so it was easier to ignore the few quiet hours he spent at home alone each night. He’d settled well into his new routine and was comfortable with it. Then God decided to disrupt everything by hiring another tech specialist for his department. A man whose brains, trendy looks, and voice would leave Hart tongue-tied and captivated at their first introduction.
Free quickly awakens a passion in Hart that he long thought was dead. An attraction he didn’t know existed. He couldn’t fathom that the sexy cyber genius could be interested in an over-sized, big-bearded brute that served criminals the bottom line for a living. No matter what his best friend, God said.
A future with Hart could be potentially dangerous and often times full of terrifyingly close calls; but little did he know that so could falling for the most hunted hacker in the world. All Lennox Freeman wants in life is security, love and protection… Hart had all that to give and more.
His Hart’s Command is a spin-off of the original Nothing Special series. With some parts running parallel to the previous book. We get to see all the guys again, and how their lives continue to change after their happily ever after. It’s also a good place for someone new to get into these men.
As always, I love the older characters. Their sweet banter, and how they were not afraid to show each other who they truly were. This book is a nice mix of sweet and sexy. I liked the way Free and Hart fit together. They have a vulnerability that calls the reader to know more about their past and what made them protect their hearts. They are strong and capable but as a couple they are beautiful. They helped the other heal and look forward to their future.
There are not as much action scenes in this story, but the author did an excellent job making them relevant. Everything that happened had a reason and moved the story forward. The smexy was a bit milder but it worked for them. There are some awkward moments but they fit the story.
My only complaints were about Hart’s ex-wife and their story. Perhaps to theatrical for my taste. And some loose ends here and there. Overall, a nice addition to this series.
The cover by Jay Aheer is worth staring at. It matches the previous books but it’s enticing enough to attract new readers. Plus, that beard…
Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to have BA Tortuga here talking about her  Christmas prep and her new story, Stetsons and Stakeouts. Welcome, BA.
Hey y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of all things Christmas!
Okay, so I’m supposed to be all promotion-girl, but y’all.
Christmas!
I know, bad author.
Sue me.
*grins*
So, I’m the woman with the menagerie on the front porch (light up basset, yorkie, narwhal, bull rider, yeti, shark, owl, rhino…), Christmas music blaring, dogs running in and out. It’s hell being my neighbor.
EXCEPT!
I cook.
So far I’ve delivered pecan pie, dinner rolls, glazed pecans, and chocolate cherry snowballs.
I’ve received baklava (homemade phyllo, y’all!), meat pies, hummus, and Swiss chocolate.
Tomorrow I’m making chili and cornbread to take next door on one side and ginger cookies for the couple on the other side.
I wish y’all a happy holiday season and many goodies.
Much love, y’all,
BA
Stetsons and Stakeouts Official Blurb:
Gianni Cesare is a DEA agent and rancher—who also happens to be a millionaire heir to an Italian count. Running a multiagency sting out of his East Texas ranch means he needs a new foreman… preferably someone a little wet behind the ears who won’t ask too many questions.
Gianni’s Aunt Jerilyn hires Bonner Fannin, a roughstock rider with zero ranch experience and a sister who’s pregnant with a violent biker’s twins. If that’s not bad enough, Bonner is pretending he and his sister are married to protect her and to help get him the job.
Gianni didn’t think Bonner was the marrying type during their torrid beach affair years ago, but he’s not sure if he has time to explore that thought now, as overrun as his ranch is with drug cartels, macho government agents, and local cops. Looks like Bonner and Gianni are both in over their heads, and they may have to band together during this adventure to swim rather than sink.
About BA Tortuga
Texan to the bone and an unrepentant Daddy’s Girl, BA Tortuga spends her days with her basset hounds and her beloved wife, texting her sisters, and eating Mexican food. When she’s not doing that, she’s writing. She spends her days off watching rodeo, knitting and surfing Pinterest in the name of research. BA’s personal saviors include her wife, Julia Talbot and coffee. Lots of coffee. Really good coffee.
Having written everything from fist-fighting rednecks to hard-core cowboys to werewolves, BA does her damnedest to tell the stories of her heart, which was raised in Northeast Texas, but has heard the call of the  high desert and lives in the Sandias. With books ranging from hard-hitting GLBT romance, to fiery menages, to the most traditional of love stories, BA refuses to be pigeon-holed by anyone but the voices in her head.
A Lila Audionook Review: Kill Game (Seven of Spades #1) by Cordelia Kingsbridge and Wyatt Baker (Narrator)
Standard
Rating: 4 stars out of 5
Homicide detective Levi Abrams is barely holding his life together. He’s reeling from the fallout of a fatal shooting, and his relationship with his boyfriend is crumbling. The last thing he’s prepared for is a serial killer stalking the streets of Las Vegas. Or how he keeps getting thrown into the path of annoyingly charming bounty hunter Dominic Russo.
Dominic likes his life free of complications. That means no tangling with cops—especially prickly, uptight detectives. But when he stumbles across one of the Seven of Spades’s horrifying crime scenes, he can’t let go, despite Levi’s warnings to stay away.
The Seven of Spades is ruthless and always two moves ahead. Worst of all, they’ve taken a dangerously personal interest in Levi and Dominic. Forced to trust each other, the two men race to discover the killer’s identity, revealing hidden truths along the way and sparking a bond neither man expected. But that may not be enough to protect them.
This killer likes to play games, and the deck is not stacked in Levi and Dominic’s favor.
Kill Game is an interesting police procedural with a good amount of comedic relief & romance.  It’s not totally dark, but it has enough grim to make the reader guess the outcome. The book has a fulfilling ending, but as a series ends in a cliffhanger. Not enough to disappoint, but enough to want to listen to the next installment immediately.
I really enjoyed the main characters’ imperfections. Neither of them is a demi-god, superhero combo with perfect bodies or lives. They are down-to-earth men, truthful to their jobs and lovely with their friends and families. They wanted to do better for others even when their lives were less than perfect.
Their relationship is more than slow. By the end of the book they are finally coming to terms with their attraction, but even then, they took the time to get to know each other, providing the space they needed to be better before moving forward. I hope the next couple of books show us more of their relationship.
All the secondary characters were fleshed out and the victims interesting enough to carry the suspense angle. I like the Seven of Spades and the way it plays the game with Levi and Dom. Showing how much they learned from each other.
This is my first audiobook by Wyatt Baker and it didn’t work for me. I’m glad the story was solid and kept my interest. I had trouble following who was talking. At least, thanks to the author, I had enough clues to figure it out. Definitely, not looking forward to another of his narrations.
The cover by Garrett Leigh shows the main clue in the story and goes with the dark theme.
A MelanieM Release Day Review: No Tears for Darcy by Vicki Reese
Standard
Rating: 4 stars out of 5
Letting love pass them by would be a crime.
Former forensic accountant Cameron has lost nearly everyone he’s ever loved, and now his vintage clothing shop has been broken into and trashed. When town police chief Will Carson asks an out-of-town cop friend of his for help, Cam takes one look at the dark-haired, blue-eyed detective and knows he’s in real trouble—and it has nothing to do with vandalism or murder.
Pete Minchelli is on leave from his job in Philadelphia due to a gunshot wound, but he figures he can help an academy buddy with some light police work. Plus, he’ll have a chance to experience small-town life. He’s tired of the big city and all its corruption. But he quickly discovers that not all the bad stuff happens in cities. What he doesn’t expect to find is death, treachery—or love.
No Tears for Darcy by Vicki Reese is a solid terrific MM mystery romance, my first from this author.  I really enjoyed it on many levels, not just the slow building attraction between Cameron and Pete that happens over the course of the story and the investigation but the investigation itself.  That mystery has some very nice twists to it, made all the more suspenseful by the format that includes the pov from the killer as well.
Yes there are multiple povs here but it works, the flow of the plot is even and fast paced, and the bodies pile up nicely.  I can say that while admitting the author still makes you care only for a portion of the characters here, not a broad spectrum of townspeople, so when certain people fall you don’t feel nary a twinge.
I also figured out who exactly the killer was but by then I wanted to know how it was  all going to play out.  Reese did a good job in the action scenes and in making the reader care in the outcome.  Plus I have to admit I loved the Minchelli family, all of them.  Having them as a support for Cameron and Pete’s relationship gave it depth it needed.
This was a first story for me by this author and it was really entertaining.  It is certainly going to send me seeking out more to see what else they have written.  If you enjoy contemporary romance with more than a dash of action and suspense, pick up No Tears for Darcy.  I recommend it for everyone looking for new authors and a story to add to their TBR pile.
Cover Artist: Tiferet Design.  I like this cover.  It’s certainly eye catching and has all the right elements.
A Lila Review: Undercover Star by Jackie Keswick
Standard
Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5
It sounds like the stupidest idea in the history of stupid ideas. Detective Inspector Josh Ingram wants to find a deadly medieval locket and through it, a murderer. So why does his boss decide to team him up with Matisse Vervein, a pop idol many consider just a pretty face… and expect the two of them to hunt down an art thief?
Marissa Godwin, Matisse’s no-nonsense manager, isn’t stupid. Neither is her brother-in-law, Detective Superintendent Tim Montgomery. Each is looking out for a lonely man on the verge of quitting what he does best, and both believe that their charges would make a great team.
The attraction sizzling between Josh and Matisse is hard to miss, but there’s plenty of resentment, too. Focused on pushing Josh and Matisse towards each other, Marissa and Tim haven’t imagined the kind of trouble a music star and a detective can find when they ditch their prejudices and accept that the attraction between them is mutual. Or how far each is prepared to go to prove it to the other.
Undercover Star is a mix of intrigue, adventure, and romance. It starts right into the action which can be confusing. It takes time to learn all the names and follow Matisse first meeting with Josh. His acceptance seems rushed and out of nowhere, but after that, the rest of the story takes a more linear form.
There’s a disconnection between catching the thief and the romance arc. One is the catalyst to the other, but the investigation becomes secondary, and almost pushed aside after the MCs’ relationship starts.
As always, the author did an excellent job setting the story in a realistic part of the world. And adding the right amount of politics and procedures for the investigation to feel realistic. I’m almost sure people who know the area easily recognized the towns and stops in the book.
Overall, it’s a nice story. The end was somehow abrupt and there’s no sense of ending. Not really a cliffhanger, but a HFN. Hopefully, there’s more to see in this world.
The cover by Emma Griffin has several important elements of the story, but it’s a bit cluttered.
L.A. Witt and Cari Z On Andreas’ Honeymoon Site and ‘Romantic Behavior’ (Guest Blog for Riptide Publishing Tour and Giveaway)
Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words is happy to host L.A. Witt and Cari Z today on their tour for Romantic Behavior. Welcome!
Where would Andreas want to go for the honeymoon?
By L.A. Witt and Cari Z
So if money and time off work weren’t issues, where would Andreas want to take Darren for their honeymoon? I picked five places that I think would top his list, though you’d have to ask Cari if Darren’s list would look even remotely the same…
  1. Amsterdam. For many reasons, but mostly because even if he won’t admit it out loud, Andreas thinks it would be hilarious to watch Darren get stoned.
  2. A cabin in the woods a million miles from everything in like Canada or Alaska or something. Basically, anywhere he can escape from all of humanity except Darren, who’s one of the few people he actually likes being around for any length of time. But with a phone in case his kids need to reach him.
  3. Disneyland or Disney World. Hey, Andreas has a perpetual kid side just like everyone else, and he’s never gotten to go without his own kids in tow. He thinks it would be fun to go with Darren, and he’ll even considering putting on a pair of mouse ears if his man deploys the puppy dog eyes. Just don’t ask him to get on It’s a Small World or he might tase you.
  4. Anything that doesn’t tax his ankle. Andreas pretty much won’t say no to anything that makes Darren happy, so as long as it’s not cross country skiing, snowboarding, or like the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage or anything else that might make his ankle tender, he’s game.
  5. Tell everyone they’ve gone on a big cruise or whatever, but just stay home. At the end of the day, all Andreas really wants is to be with Darren. The less traveling they do, the less opportunity there is for disaster to strike, and besides, he’s more than happy to have a staycation. As long as he’s got Darren, he can’t ask for much more, especially if no one knows where they really are. Except the kids, of course.
About Romantic Behavior
Detective Andreas Ruffner is no fool—he’s found a man who loves him, puts up with him, and has stuck with him through hell and back, and it’s time to put a ring on it. Darren Corliss is the love of his life, and he wants the whole world to know it.
Now the fun part—the wedding!
Well, after the not-so-fun part of planning the wedding in between dealing with overbearing and impossible-to-please family members. With future mothers-in-law driving them both up a wall, the guest list growing out of control, and the wedding getting ever more complicated, Darren and Andreas have to wonder if they’re in over their heads.
But they’re going to make it to the altar if it kills them . . . and at this rate, it just might.
Available now from Riptide Publishing!
About the Bad Behavior Series
It’s “hell no” at first sight for newly partnered detectives Andreas Ruffner and Darren Corliss. Darren is too chipper, Andreas is too gruff, and that whole “IA wants me to prove you’re a dirty cop” thing really doesn’t get them off on the right foot.
It doesn’t matter if they like each other. They’re partners and that’s final. Though Andreas is easy on the eyes. And Darren is kind of cute. And . . . okay, maybe they can make this work.
They’d better, because as their cases get more horrifying—and more personal—they’ll have to trust each other with their lives, and with their hearts.
Check out Bad Behavior!
About Cari Z.
Cari Z was a bookworm as a child and remains one to this day. In an effort to combat her antisocial reading behavior, she did all sorts of crazy things, from competitive gymnastics to alligator wresting (who even knew that was legal!) to finally joining the Peace Corps, which promptly sent her and her husband to the wilds of West Africa, stuck them in a hut, and said, “See ya!” She also started writing, because some things she just thought she could do better. She’s still climbing that ladder, but can’t stop herself from writing, or from sharing what she creates.
Cari enjoys a wide range of literary genres, from the classics (get ‘im, Ahab) to science fiction and fantasy of all types, to historical fiction and reference materials (no, seriously, there are so many great encyclopedias out there). She writes in a wide range of genres as well, but somehow 90% of what she produces ends up falling into the broad and exciting category of m/m erotica. There’s a sprinkling of f/m and f/f and even m/f/m in her repertoire, but her true love is man love. And there’s a lot of love to go around.
Cari has published short stories, novellas, and novels with numerous print and e-presses, and she also offers up a tremendous amount of free content on Literotica.com, under the name Carizabeth.
She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don’t tell Lauren. And definitely don’t tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut . . .
love-in-the-line-of-fireSpecial Agent Jonah Pratt heads the security detail for First Gentleman Dr. David Hammond.  Basically his work is his life.  His private life, what there is of it, is just that, private.  Nobody in the Secret Service knows he is gay except his supervisors and one agent he began with years ago.  Protecting the husband of the first gay president comes first in his life.  Or so he thought until an assassination attempt on his protectee changes things.
Benji Campbell is a student at Georgetown University.  Having served a couple of terms in Iraq, he has been trained to handle dangerous situations.  Having been in the Middle East for most of the past ten years, he has hardly had time to find a one night stand, let alone something long term.  When someone starts taking shots on campus, his training kicks in and subdues the shooter.  What does he get for his trouble?  He gets punched in the jaw by a Secret Service agent.
Jonah realizes that his friend was killed in the line of duty.  Benji, having lost men in his missions in Iraq, tells Jonah that he knows what he feels and offers to listen to Jonah.  Jonah shows up one night at Benji’s apartment and gets drunk while telling his tale.  Benji feels something for Jonah but as neither have had any real experience in dating, things start awkwardly.  However, the two men find a groove and things are going great until Benji has a flashback in a restaurant.  Benji feels that Jonah needs someone whose head is screwed on right.  He also realizes what it is like now that he is the one waiting for someone with a dangerous job to come home at night.  His fears come true as there is another assassination attempt on the First Gentlemen.  He must find out if Jonah is alright but will he be able to?
I found this book more enjoyable than the Michael Murphy’s previous book The President’s Husband, which shares some of the same characters.  The slow developing romance between Jonah and Benji worked well as neither man had been in a relationship before.   After Benji has his panic attack in the restaurant, his sense of foreboding seems to telegraph future events in terms of the second attempt on the First Gentleman.  You can almost feel what every spouse or partner of a law enforcement official goes through every day they send their love one to work.  I thought that David Hammond worked better in a supporting role rather than as a primary character as he was in Husband.  Having read that book does provide some insight into his actions in this book.  However, Love can be read on its own.
The cover art by L. C. Chase is outstanding.  It has images of Jonah (in a suit you find Secret Service agents usually wear) and Benji (in a muscle shirt with dog tags around his neck) in the top half of the cover with a photo of the National Mall on the bottom half.
