A Stella Review: Flare (North Star #3) by Posy Roberts

Standard

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

A love story and a family worth fighting for.

Hugo and Kevin strive to put their lives back together after tragedy, doing everything in their power to create a stable life. Hugo’s acting career is back on track, and Kevin hires a nanny to help with the kids as they discover their new normal. But when Erin’s parents seek full custody of Brooke and Finn, that stability is shattered.

With Hugo working in LA or New York, the distance from his new family gets to him. At home, the nanny’s hands-on approach leaves Hugo feeling pushed out, so he leaves his beloved apartment and eclectic neighborhood behind to move in with Kevin.

Hugo has a hard time fitting in with the suburbanites with Kevin’s passive-aggressive “friends” making Hugo feel anything but welcome. As the custody case heads to mediation, Brooke is bullied about having two dads, and Hugo realizes his mere presence might be doing more harm than good.

Hugo must decide to stay and fight for his family or leave and let them live in peace.

This is how every author should write. This is how every romance should be, real, true, filled with feelings and emotions so powerful I was often left breathless. And this is how every series should be, with amazing characters, starting from the main ones until the supportive (and not) second ones. Each single character struggling with the real life issues, like all of us do. Illnesses, love, school, work, friendhip, family, being adult or growing up, first love and second chances at love. You can find all of these in Flare and in the North Star trilogy.

Flare is the perfect conclusion for an already perfect series, I’m so sad to let the characters go on with their lives. They made me cry more than once, they made me laugh and dream. I fought for and with Kevin and Hugo for their big family. I loved them dearly.

I am with no doubt addicted to this series, I will share it everywhere and recommend it to everyone. There was no little detail I didn’t enjoy and the writing was so sublime it was a huge pleasure to read these novels. I already was a fan of Posy Roberts but right now I’m feeling more like a stalker, I can’t wait for her to release more stories to fall in love with.

The cover art by Olive Us Designs is well done, it follows the style of the series and I like its darkness.

Excerpt

Rude Awakening

A sharp knock followed by the doorbell clanging woke Kevin and Hugo. They yanked on last night’s discarded clothes and headed downstairs, Lulu trailing behind, her tail wagging a mile a minute.

When Kevin opened the door, a man he didn’t recognize gave him a nod. “Are you Kevin Magnus?”

“Yes.”

Hugo struggled to scoop Lulu into his arms; she was desperate to meet this stranger.

The man handed Kevin a manila envelope. “You’ve been served.”

“What the hell?” Hugo asked as he shut the door.

“I don’t know. Let’s see.” Kevin opened the envelope and pulled out papers. “Notice of Motion and Motion for Change of Custody,” he read, not believing his eyes. He flipped through the pages, scanning to see what this was really about.

“Erin’s parents are trying to get custody of my kids. No way in hell is that happening. No way in hell.”

A love story with a seventeen-year intermission.

Hugo Thorson fell in love when he was sixteen. He’s maybe been in love since, but probably not. He’s been too busy directing plays to devote much time to men who can’t accept all of him. No one ever made him feel like his first love did.

Kevin Magnus married a woman and has two children, but the marriage wasn’t happy. In the shadow of divorce, he’s striving to be a better father, but he’s still a work in progress.

When Hugo and Kevin bump into each other at the lake, memories of their last kiss incite a new first kiss. Visions of the life they always wanted are vivid, but so much stands in the way of their dreams. Hugo is out and proud but no one knows Kevin’s bisexual. If Kevin comes out, he risks losing custody of his kids. If he doesn’t walk hand in hand with Hugo, he risks losing the love of his life.

A Stella Review :Fusion (North Star #2) by Posy Roberts

Standard

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

A love story comes out of the shadows.

Everyone in Kevin’s life knows him as straight rather than bisexual. There was no need to come out until now, but loving Hugo is worth any prejudice he’ll encounter. Hugo does his best to be patient while Kevin navigates his way toward openness, but he refuses to be put back in a closet for long.

Kevin wants to tell his kids without screwing up their newfound stability, and he worries about telling his ex because Erin might use the truth against him to renegotiate custody. Kevin wants it all finalized, but time isn’t on his side.

When Erin gets grim news, it shakes everyone to the core and rips Kevin away from the life he planned with Hugo. The news brings Hugo’s past hurts bubbling to the surface. Yet when Erin turns to Hugo for support, their new connection shows him how essential he is to Kevin and his kids.

Despite the chaos, it’s clear Hugo is very much a part of this unconventional family.

I could be biased brcause I’m a huge fan of Posy Roberts, she is one of my favorite authors, but this second installment in the North Star series was simply amazing. I already met these characters in Spark but here in Fusion, things are on another level. The emotions were so deep I admit I had to stop for a few minutes sometimes, yes I shed tears more than a couple of times but it was inevitable to me. This novel hurt me, the themes the author used hit my memories very hard. I struggled with the reading but all the pain was rewarded with a beautiful and powerful story.

Kevin and Hugo were just starting their relationship when a life changing news was delivered to them from one of the most important persons in Kevin’s family. From that moment everything changed and Hugo had to build new strong bonds. The old and new relationships he strengthened and created were just the confirmation of how a positive and selfless person he is, someone every one of us should have beside them.

Of course to me Fusion was so much better than Spark, it’s so full of feelings in every aspect of the life, love, friendship and more, when I finished the novel, I was a little overwhelmed, definitely in a good way. I can’t wait to discover where the third and last book in this trilogy will lead me. I’m so ready to see these characters grow into their so new lives. Each one of them.

Highly recommend it.

The cover art by Olive Us Designs is well done, it follows the style of the series and I like its darkness.

A Stella Review: Spark (North Star #1) by Posy Roberts

RATING 5 out of 5 stars

A love story with a seventeen-year intermission.

Kevin Magnus married a woman and has two children, but the marriage wasn’t happy. In the shadow of divorce, he’s striving to be a better father, but he’s still a work in progress.

The curtain may never rise on their second act.

I first bought Spark when it was released in 2013, it was the year I started reading in English and I had to give it up because I simply wasn’t good enough. I gave it a second try later but the various flashbacks put me off. Still I have to say the North Star series was always in the back of my mind, especially when I started reading the other stories written by Posy Roberts and fell in love with the author. So this second edition was the perfect opportunity to me to finally give the series the chance it deserves. And finally I was able to finish the first book and it was a huge success. I adored it.

First of all the novel is so well written it was a pleasure to read it, although it’s long, I finished it quite quickly because the reading flew easily and yes, I was so into the story I couldn’t wait to come at the ending. I am a sucker for plots like this one, with adult characters, second chances, children, so I found in Spark all the elements I want in my readings. I liked the characters, all of them, from the beginning, and thought they were pretty real in their actions and feelings. And it was clear how deep and strong was the connection between Hugo and Kevin, they were soul mates, nothing more to say.

They were so made for each other it was so easy for them to catch up after seventeen years, they were sweet and emotional, but so freaking hot together.

Having not read the first edition, I can’t tell you how much the book was edited and changed. I can recommend you to grab it now and start this series as soon as you can, I so can’t wait for Fusion. I want to smile and cry and feel with Hugo and Kevin and his family.

The cover art by Olive Us Designs is well done, I like it.

The Books You Love are Back in One Bundle! North Star (Spark-Fusion-Flare) by Posy Roberts (giveaway)

Standard

NorthStar-altNearly three years ago, North Star was released book by book. Now you can get the entire series as a bundle!

In the summer of 2012, I was in a tizzy to get a story down that would become my North Star trilogy. I was afraid if I didn’t get it down as fast as possible, I would lose everything. Sometimes I woke in the middle of the night and went to my keyboard and wrote for hours. Other times I sat at the lake, my laptop battery charring my thigh more than the sun at my back, and type away as fast as my fingers would fly.

The story came to me in a strangely inspired way and I knew it couldn’t be told in just one book. It had to be three, even if the story was always intended to be read together.

Spark was released at the beginning of September 2013, with Fusion and Flare following in November and then January. That’s really close together for a series, so I was lucky Dreamspinner Press released them one right after the other. People have had to wait years between George R.R. Martin or J.K. Rowling books.

And now North Star is in a bundle! *cheers wildly*

The story arc spanning all three books is how Hugo and Kevin figure out how they can be together and stay together despite all the odds. And they face many obstacles over the years, starting with Kevin’s father in high school. Lucky for them, they get a second chance at love in their thirties, years after they drifted apart in college.

NorthStarBanner

As authors, we take risks when we put out a series. There is always reader drift and I know not everyone will pick up subsequent books. I’m guilty of that myself. I move on to another book or series and by the time the next book comes out, I’m not around to see the release announcment or my interests have changed. That’s why I’m really excited about this bundle. I can’t wait to see how new readers will react to all three books together.

Just a few weeks ago I followed along as a reader picked up Spark and commented on Twitter as she read. She immediately picked up Fusion and then moved on to Flare and read them all in a few days. She loved the series, recommending it to all her followers, and I teared up with each of her tweets. What she loved about the stories is what I loved so much about Hugo and Kevin, their genuine love and devotion for each other and their family.

When I set out to write North Star, my intention was to tell a realistic story about a complex family that fought for each other, challenged each other, and lifted each other up. Some of what they are up against completely sucks, just like some of the crap we have to deal with in our own lives. Now you can enjoy the ride to three happy ever afters in a matter of days!

In high school, Hugo and Kevin discover they are perfect for each other. Sadly they fell in love years too early to make a solid commitment, and college and other relationships got in the way. Fifteen years later they meet again, and all those old feelings are rekindled. Second chances at such perfect love don’t happen every day. Hugo and Kevin immediately know they’re meant to be, but figuring out a way to combine their divergent lives without rocking their well-established boats is the challenge. If that’s even possible. Perhaps their love is worth upending the worlds they know.

Falling in love again is easy. Fitting into each other’s complicated lives isn’t.North Star for WP FI

Hugo and Kevin were best friends and secret lovers in high school, but a chance meeting years later proves that the spark that drew them together before is still there. In Spark, Hugo and Kevin must try to put together a relationship while overcoming the obstacles of coming out, divorce, and children. In Fusion, an unexpected illness may tear apart all they’ve been building. And in Flare, though they’ve finally settled together happily, outside forces are working hard to upset their family.

image009Posy Roberts writes about the realistic struggles of men looking for love. Whether her characters are family men, drag queens, or lonely men searching for connections, they all find a home in her stories.

Posy is a Jill of all trades and master of the drill and paintbrush. She’s married to a partner who makes sure she doesn’t forget to eat or sleep during her writing frenzies. Her daughter, a budding author and cinematographer, helps her come up with character names. For fun, Posy enjoys crafting, geocaching, and singing spontaneously about the mundane, just to make regular life more interesting.
